As VersAtile As You Are By Tori Stafford
T
here is no fashion staple as trusted and timeless as the little black dress. Praised for its versatility and its ability to turn heads, the LBD is something every woman should own at least one of – though the variety of shapes, drapes, cuts and fabrics make nearly every LBD unique. Still, a simple cut that lands just above the knee with a conservative neckline can be worn over and over for an entire decade without seeming dated. With the right accessories, the LBD can make your go-to garment a sophisticated statement piece, time and again. NeckliNes aNd Jewellery If there’s anything we’ve learned from classic beauties like Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O., it’s that a simple black dress with a stunning necklace can be the epitome of timeless elegance. Conversely, these same icons demonstrated that a simple silk kerchief tied casually around the neck can dress down the LBD, making them look approachable, but still chic and sophisticated. Taking a page from these iconic muses, the 2014 runways sparkled with heavy gemstones, encrusting everything from handbags to chokers. While bold, bright crystals in statement jewellery are the perfect way to add your own style to the LBD, keep in mind the advice of the great Coco Chanel: look in
the mirror and remove one accessory before leaving the house. Less is more when it comes to accessorizing. With heavy metal accessories making a comeback in a huge way, a broad belt in shiny metallic is a great way to make an on-trend embellishment to a simple LBD. Similarly, chunky bangles and bib necklaces are a simple one-item fix for glamming-up your basic blacks for a night out on the town. Forget everything your mother told you about mixing metals – be it bronze, brass, gold or gunmetal, layering different metals is encouraged this season, so dare to break the rules. coveriNg Up While it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of the warmer season, getting caught without something to cover up once the sun has set is far less exciting. Covering up to cut the chill of the night air (or an overactive air conditioner), is a constant throughout the season, so donning the LBD is a surefire way to know you can layer something on without clashing colours. This year’s calming and cute pastels are a perfect way to bring a sunny vibe to your outfit. Additionally, with sheer fabrics everywhere, covering up doesn’t necessarily have to cover much – an oversized sheer button-down shirt is a luxe way to make shielding shoulders a breeze. With power suits and structured blazers also playing a major role this season, a fitted jacket is a stylish way to wear what you have while being fashionably formal. Conversely, fringe and stud embellishments are also a trending way to make an impact, making a bomber jacket an ideal solution to mix classic formal wear and stellar street style on a colder day. If flowers are more your thing, a pretty punch of floral is an easy way to breathe an air of summer into your classic LBD for anything from patio nightlife to afternoon weddings.

Retreat RELAX, RECHARGE, RENEW By Sarah Vermette

A
s exciting as it is to travel and see the world, our holidays are often as exhausting as the everyday grind we're trying to unwind from. Between researching excursions, booking rooms and pounding the city pavement, we often forget to make space for relaxing, which is the one thing we desire and need. To avoid coming home from a vacation needing a vacation, consider a retreat. Retreats are designed to cater to the mind, body and spirit and will serve those whose sole aim is to relax, recharge and renew. To find a retreat best suited to your sensibilities considerable research may be required as there are several different options to consider, some of which are outlined here.
Yoga & Meditation Retreats Since the practice of yoga is popular throughout the western world, there are many retreats that are designed around yoga and meditation. Most of these will be holistic in nature, also providing healthy food plans, inspirational speakers, as well as spa and alternative health services, with the aim of nurturing all parts of a person. Think of sitting in stillness long enough to hear the depths of your heart.
Spa Retreats For those who want the ultimate experience in relaxation, a spa retreat offers every opportunity to make up for lost time in pampering yourself. Massages, mud wraps, saunas, pools and serene settings all come together to rejuvenate the body and allow the mind to de-stress. As the pressures of
everyday life stack up, the opportunity to be catered to for a week — or just the chance to have time with no obligations or responsibilities — can be worth every penny.
Equine Healing Retreats
The spiritual wisdom of horses has long been revered. Because horses are similar to humans in their limbic (emotional) brain region, they are able to provide honest and immediate feedback about the person they are facing, and begin to lead them into a healing state. Horses can help facilitate personal insight, which prompts healing through awareness. This type of retreat is perfect for those who wish for personal exploration and growth.
Adventure Retreats
For those who come to their centre through adventure, there are many options to consider. It might be something specifically focused, such as the challenge of walking up a mountain or camping on the plains of Africa. Some retreats offer a number of different adventures, such as archery, sailing, scuba diving, and more. These can be a wonderful option that will cater to the differing preferences within a family or group. Aside from more popular options mentioned above, there are also retreats designed specifically for men or women, as well as romantic retreats for couples. Others focus very specifically on certain areas, promoting the benefits of dancing, hugging, laughing, art, spiritual development and self-love. Take the time to think about what will nurture you and then begin to seek. Pursue www.retreatsonline.com as a starting point.

ats are truly amazing creatures; from the large lion to the common household pet, their diversity is quite impressive. Greatly loved, domesticated cats have become a very common pet with close to 100-million felines residing in Canada and the United States alone. In general, cats will acquire 30 adult teeth within the first six months of life. They depend on these teeth for the rest of their lives, which can be as many as 15 to 20 years. Cats certainly experience their fair share of dental issues, as would we without regularly maintaining our oral hygiene.
There are a number of different problems we frequently diagnose in cat patients and unfortunately most are fairly uncomfortable for them to deal with. Cats can be incredibly difficult to “read” and will hide pain until they simply can’t any longer, which can make it challenging for cat owners to notice a problem in its early stages. Without examining the cat’s mouth it’s impossible to know if a problem exists and how serious it may be. Feline Resorptive Lesions (FRLs) are particularly common in cats, affecting 29 to 38 per cent of the population, and is a disease unique to the feline species. FRLs generally develop in older cats, but I have seen them in cats as young as three. Essentially, a tooth will begin to undergo a process of self-destruction or “resorption.” The enamel may then be lost, causing a hole to develop in the sensitive pulp chamber. The destruction may also develop in the root of the tooth, which greatly affects the strength and integrity of the tooth as a whole. Another problem unique to cats is stomatitis. This is inflammation and infection of the gums, lips and tongue. In
its most pronounced form it can present as a glaring sore in the back of a cat’s mouth. If a cat develops stomatitis it is generally a sign of underlying problems such as severe tartar and gingivitis. This can progress into a chronic disease, as some cats will become hypersensitive to plaque and will have a breakout with even the slightest build-up. There are many products available that can help maintain your pets’ oral hygiene, although dogs have gotten the most attention in the marketplace. Diets, treats, water additives, and most importantly, specially sized toothbrushes have been made for cats and, just like for people, daily maintenance is key to preventing serious and costly issues. If your cat is not as excited about eating anymore or is sleeping more often, or even if you just want to take preventative measures, we can help. Schedule a complimentary dental check for your cat friend at Prairie Animal Health Centre and we can get Fluffy (and you) headed in the right direction!

Our mission is to educate and empower patients to gain control of their health and to help them feel better through comprehensive consultations, diagnostic testing and natural medicine solutions. We provide patients with healthcare choices by offering complete and complimentary family medicine and strive to work in collaboration with any and all members of your healthcare team. Dr. Bridgman ND (Naturopathic Doctor) frequently attends conferences, seminars, and workshops to ensure the clinic provides the most advanced level of services. The clinic is comprehensive in scope and excels at treating digestive health and energy concerns, as well as chronic conditions. We offer pain management therapies and intravenous therapies for energy and pain, as well as thorough advice on cancer support.
is explained on the following page in Dr. Bridgman's expert advice column. Secondly, we will be the first clinic in Saskatchewan offering locoregional hyperthermia. This is an advanced cancer support therapy developed in Europe. We will be the only clinic offering such treatment east of Vancouver and west of Toronto. For the past couple of decades the results of hyperthermia therapy in Europe have been very promising. Hyperthermia amplifies the effects of chemotherapy and radiation. This equipment will be installed at our clinic by a German team early in November. This service is made possible through an extremely generous contribution by the Ambrose family in Moose Jaw.
This year we are very excited about two new services that we are bringing to Saskatchewan.
To learn more about hyperthermia and cancer support you may wish to look at the National Cancer Institute’s report on it at www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Therapy/hyperthermia.

Relief from Chronic Joint Pain an aggressive approach, which is very effective and helps patients avoid surgery. Elite and competitive athletes are quite familiar with PRP; it’s become popular due to its success in re-growing partially torn tendons, ligaments, and in some cases, cartilage.
Dr. Toby Bridgman N.D. Weyburn Naturopathic Medicine Clinic 138 1st St NE Weyburn, SK 306.891.9697 weyburn.naturopathic@gmail.com
W
ith eight years of postsecondary education and training, naturopathic doctors are experts in pain management, which is why people seek them out for treatment when they have chronic health concerns that are not responding to conventional treatment and therapy. At Weyburn Naturopathic medicine clinic we offer regenerative treatments for chronic joint pain. Our patients no longer have to travel to larger cities for state-of-the-art treatments, which can be time consuming and costly. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) involves the injection of a platelet rich concentrate from the patient’s blood into an injured area to stimulate healing and repair. It’s
HOW DOES PRP WORK? The platelets in our blood are naturally full of connective tissue growth factors. These factors stimulate the growth of new connective tissue, such as ligaments and tendon. Injecting these factors directly into the damaged ligaments and tendons stimulates a natural repair process. Platelets are concentrated from the patient’s whole blood before the procedure. WHAT CAN PRP TREAT? PRP works really well on shoulder, knee and low back pain. This treatment is particularly beneficial if the injury is chronic and has not healed for a long time. PRP can be used on any joint. IS PRP C OV E R E D BY INSURANCE? Most insurance companies recognize regulated naturopathic doctors services and will cover a portion, or all, of the expense of the treatment. DO PRP INJECTIONS HURT? This is a medical procedure and is uncomfortable. Typically we are injecting into an injured site, which will cause some short-term discomfort. ARE THERE RISKS WITH PRP? There is always risk with any medical procedure — infection, bleeding and nerve damage are possible. However, these complications are very rare. Some patients are at higher risk of complications. Your doctor will discuss this with you before any treatment is given.
H OW LO N G IS A PRP TREATMENT? PRP is performed in a 45-minute office visit. Blood is drawn and placed in a special centrifuge. The blood is then spun so the platelets can be separated from the red blood cells. Once concentrated, the platelets are used to treat the affected area. HOW OFTEN ARE INJECTIONS GIVEN? There is always a follow-up visit scheduled for six weeks following the first treatment. Most patients respond very well to the first treatment. In some cases up to three treatments may be needed, but this is not the norm. Often one treatment will yield profound results. You will be able to determine after the first visit what you may expect from future treatments. W H AT I S T H E S U CC E SS RATE? We see 80 per cent of patients achieve pain relief. Periodically, patients achieve 100 per cent relief after one treatment — this is best-case scenario. The best part about this therapy is that the results are permanent. Once new tissue has grown, it remains. PRP is the polar opposite of conventional cortisone injections, which will weaken the tissues over time — it is a great alternative to surgery. People understand that it makes sense to stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms as a pain solution. If you have questions, please call the Weyburn Naturopathic Medicine Clinic. Dr. Bridgman will be happy to call you back and answer your questions. To learn more about PRP injections visit the following page on the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons website: www.orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic. cfm?topic=A00648

“We’re coming to Canada in a big way,” says veteran concert tour manager Dave Furano.
F
urano has worked with the biggest names in rock and roll, including The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, The Doors, the Allman Brothers, George Harrison and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, among others. His current venture heralds a new restaurant concept that will delight families and classic rock and roll fans alike. Co-owners, and KISS front
men, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley are behind the burgeoning franchise that has opened several locations in the last two years. Simmons’ wife, Shannon Tweed — a model and actress — is a Canadian girl whose mom and sisters live in Saskatoon. Tweed connected the dots between the restaurant founders and Saskatoon entrepreneur Vaughn Wyant for the first Canadian Rock & Brews location.

“I told Vaughn we want this to be great and even though Saskatoon is small, we want this to be the first in Canada,” says Furano. “I want to have retractable glass roofs so even in winter you can feel you’re outside with snow falling. We’ll have fires going. I know it gets cold up there!” The ConCepT Rock & Brews is “an energized dining and entertainment concept” featuring affordable, high quality American comfort food, including wings, salads, burgers, sandwiches and pizza, along with a variety of diet-conscious, gluten free and healthy options. There’s a broad selection of international and craft brews, and guests enjoy a family-friendly rock ‘n’ roll experience. The restaurant caters to “li’l rockers” too, with a special menu and crayons to colour placemats. The Lore In the summer of 2010, highly respected concert tour manager Dave Furano, his brother, concert merchandising industry pioneer Dell Furano, and restaurateur/hotelier extraordinaire Michael Zislis got together for a KISS concert. While backstage, enjoying a cold beer and visiting with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, Dave said, “What’s better than rock and brews?” Brainstorming ensued — engaging the diverse talents and creative energy of the five friends bound together by their love of concert rock — and Rock & Brews was born. The LoCaL Legend It looks like this kind of cool will work out well north of the border as Vaughn Wyant, Saskatoon business magnate, has signed on to work with Gene, Shannon and the Formosa group of Vancouver to launch the first Canadian Rock & Brews. While Vaughn has a “high opinion of the of the business climate in Saskatoon, and Saskatchewan as a whole,” it’s the “kind of cool and interesting twist,” that is Rock & Brews, along with Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed — that piqued his interest. While prospective locations are still being toured, and opening dates are not even being considered yet, there is a lot of optimism around the project. “I’m in the beer business (Great West Brewery), maybe we can work with Gene to produce some proprietary brews,” adds Vaughn with a chuckle. The roCk god KISS bassist and singer Gene Simmons stands behind Rock & Brews wholeheartedly. “My favourite thing at the restaurant,” he begins, “depends on whether I come here to do some real damage. You can’t beat the burger. You cannot wrap your lips around the burgers; they’re so big! We’ve got gluten free beers and pizzas. I have to watch my girlish figure so the salads are out of this world. Everything is tasty, so you can’t lose. Food’s got to look good, then smell good, then it’s got to taste good,” Simmons says.

Simmonisms: gene on business: “It’s the Santa Claus Business Model. Make a damn list. Forget doing it on the computer because it will crash. Get a piece of paper and a pencil so you can erase it, and make a list. Prioritize. Check it twice; find out who’s naughty and nice. Don’t go to a supermarket and decide there what you need. Think about it before. A simple plan will work little and it’ll work big…Without doing the small first, you’re f-----d.” gene on his best business mentor, his mother Flora, who was freed from auschwitz by the american military: “I had a business mentor who didn’t really do too well in business herself, but the wisdom my mother raised us with cuts through the bulls---t. She believed that when you’re running the race, you can’t keep looking to see who else is running the race. Stop looking behind you because that impedes your forward momentum. That’s a fancy way of saying just never mind what everyone else is doing, just do the best you can.” gene on living a successful life: “Look, approach life with the following proviso: God gives you only one day of life, 24 hours. What are you going to do? Are you going to watch I Love Lucy reruns and wait to die? Or are you going to go out there and take life by the scruff of the neck and do some good, leave your mark, take care of your loved ones and make a lot of damn money? And that’s a good thing. A lot of people don’t realize that the one per cent makes life possible for a lot of people. It is the rich who create jobs. Nobody poor ever gave me a job.”

co-owner and Gene's partner at Rock & Brews, of the impending opening of the Saskatoon location, which will be its first in Canada.
He married his first couple in May to the tune of KISS’ Rock and Roll All Night at a wedding ceremony at Rock & Brews in El Segundo, California. Despite having balked about his own wedding for years, Gene might be getting the hang of it.
“We’re going to work out some way for people to submit their requests, maybe have a contest. The first one he did here was really special. Shannon was there and he said, ‘You know, it’s taken me a lifetime to know the importance of this reunion.’ Shannon’s bawling, I’m bawling, the whole place is bawling. It was really special.”
Couples planning their nuptials might want to take note, especially if they’re KISS fans. “The plan is for Gene to perform weddings at the grand opening,” says Dave Furano,
Hiring for the restaurant will be extravagant, too, says Furano. “When the word goes out that we’re hiring, I want it to be like American Idol. I want the lineup around the block!”

Nothing tickles a wine lover’s fancy more than the opportunity to enjoy the deep subtleties and fortified fruits of a perfect port or dessert wine, and there is no better time to enjoy these than in the cosiness of warm company on a cold night — preferably after a fine feast and in front of a warm fire! Living Sky Winery Juliett Cherry Port (Saskatchewan): Strong but elegant. The succulent flavour from the Saskatchewan cherries holds on the palate, while the finish leaves you dreaming of candied fruits and warm fires.
Baked apple with Cinnamon and Crème FraîChe
ChoColate Fondant The secret is in the timing: don’t guess! 9 tbsp. unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 1 tbsp. pure cocoa powder, plus extra for dusting 5 oz. dark chocolate, broken into pieces 1/2 cup caster sugar 3 small eggs 3 small egg yolks 1 cup plain flour, sifted 4 3/4 cup oven-proof moulds 1.
Preheat oven to 200°C. Thoroughly grease moulds and dust lightly with extra cocoa powder. Melt butter and chocolate in a bowl over a bainmarie. In a large bowl, beat together sugar, eggs and egg yolks until light and pale. Pour melted butter and chocolate over egg mix. Fold in sifted flour and cocoa. Pour the mixture into the prepared moulds and bake for 8 minutes. When the outside is crisp, loosen with a knife and carefully turn onto serving plates. The centre should be soft and gorgeously gooey! Serve with crème fraîche or vanilla ice cream.
Dauphin de Giraud (France): A classic example of French dessert wine, where ‘Botrytis’ is allowed to affect the grapes before picking. Deeply golden, quince, pear and orange flavours mingle with spiced orange treacle. Clove and cinnamon lingers.
Flapper pie A prairie classic, just like grandmother’s! Crust:
The best apples for baking at this time of year will be the biggest ones you can find in the stores. apples brown sugar maple sugar cinnamon crème fraîche 1.
Dig into the top of the apple with a teaspoon until about half way down, then fill with brown sugar and maple syrup. Bake at 350°C for 15 minutes. Top with crème fraîche and a sprinkle with cinnamon.
Graham’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port (Portugal): Tawny ports are made from red grapes aged in wooden barrels, exposing them to gradual oxidation and evaporation. As a result, they gradually mellow to a golden-brown colour with a nutty flavour and a medium sweetness drawn from the oak casks. Like all good things, tawny ports will improve with age.
10 graham wafers, crushed 8 soda biscuits, crushed 1 tbsp. sugar 1/2 cup butter 1.
Combine graham wafers, soda biscuits, sugar and butter. Set aside 1 cup for topping. Pat crumbs in a 9-inch pie plate and bake at 350°C for 5 minutes. Set aside to cool.
Cream filling: 2 cups milk 1 tbsp. cornstarch 1/2 cup sugar 3 eggs, split yolks and whites 1/2 tbsp. vanilla extract 6 tbsp. sugar Pour milk into a heavy saucepan. Mix cornstarch and sugar. Stir into milk. Add slightly beaten egg yolk and vanilla. Cook, stirring constantly until the mixture boils and thickens. Pour into pie crust. Let cool. Beat egg whites, gradually adding sugar until peaks are formed. Pile gently onto cooled pie. Spread to edges, and swirl whites for an attractive finish. Sprinkle with remaining cracker crumbs and bake at 350°C until peaks are lightly browned.

From the
Wild
to the Living Room Owning Exotic Pets By TONYA LAMBERT Photos CALVIN FEHR

Kim Shaheen with his pet serval, Jagger
P
eople have long had a fascination with the beauty and wonder of wild animals. Some people take their love of the wild into the living room, by adopting exotic animals to keep as pets. While a person’s reasons for keeping an exotic animal can be well meaning, there’s much to be considered before committing to owning one. Kim and Pam Shaheen, a couple in Regina who own a serval, an African cat, could not agree more. About eight years ago, Pam Shaheen was sitting at her computer surfing the Internet when she came across an article on the serval and was immediately intrigued. They discovered that unlike other African wild cats, the serval has a long history of human interaction: in Africa, these cats have been kept as pets for centuries, and there are even pictures of servals on the tombs of ancient Egyptian Pharaohs. After years of extensive research, Pam and her husband, Kim, made the decision to adopt a serval as a pet. This decision was not made lightly as there were several factors to take into account. An exotic animal is an expensive addition to the family. You need to factor in not only the purchase price but also the cost of upkeep; many exotic animals require a special diet. You also have to take into consideration the long-term commitment involved. While in the wild a serval will live six to 10 years, a domesticated serval can live up to 20 years (that is longer than the average marriage!). Many people adopt cats and dogs on a whim and when they realize it’s too much responsibility or are unhappy with the decision for other reasons, they take the pet to a shelter or give it away. Exotic pets are not always easy to re-home. Servals, for example, do not do well being away from their owners for very long; the Shaheens say they cannot go on trip longer than four to five days. “Having a serval is like having another child but one which will never grow up,” says Kim. Despite the adjustments the Shaheens had to make to allow their serval, named Jagger (“Like Mick, but without the lips!” jokes Kim), to have a comfortable life with them, they have no regrets about their decision. Another thing to consider
FineLifestyles
Estevan / Weyburn
29
is the quality and reputation of the breeder. Doug Nelson, a breeder from Purrfound Cattery in British Columbia, flew out with Jagger, who was then seven weeks old, and stayed with the Shaheens for two nights to ease the transition. For those who have multiple pets, it’s important to research how exotic and domestic pets will adapt to one another. In the case of a serval, it’s recommended to have the domestic pets first. The Shaheen’s 12-yearold German Shepherd Sasha was quick to adopt Jagger as her own pup, and the two enjoy playing together. It’s crucial to look into the legalities of owning your preferred breed in the area where you live. The Shaheens had only had Jagger for eight months when they received a letter from the government in November of 2012 telling them that they had to remove him from the province. An anonymous complaint had been received from someone who feared the exotic animal was potentially dangerous. Having done his research, Kim knew this was not the case. Kim explains that while a serval is a very loyal pet, it would never defend its owner. Naturally timid, a serval will run and hide at the first sign of trouble. Many servals and savannahs (a cross between a serval and a domestic cat) reside with families in Saskatchewan.
The Shaheens, who were prepared to relocate in order to keep Jagger, are happy that they have not had to do so. Jagger continues to live with the couple in their Regina home and has been licensed as a pet by the city, a remarkably easy process for which the Shaheens commend the city. As a result of all the media attention, Jagger has become an ambassador cat for servals and regularly goes on visits to businesses, schools and nursing homes throughout the city and province. The Shaheens have taken Jagger out with them from the beginning; his first trip out was within 24 hours of his arrival to Metro Pet Mart. Kim enjoys teaching the public about the importance of responsible ownership and easing some of the misconceptions surrounding exotic pets. Kim and Pam look forward to spending many more happy years with Jagger. “Overall, Jagger is an absolutely outstanding pet,” declares Kim. LOVE YOUR HOME
Tips to Finding Your
DREAM HOME By Rebecca Henderson
32
FineLifestyles Estevan Estevan // Weyburn Weyburn
Location
W
hether it’s in the heart of downtown, or the sprawling countryside, location is one of the most important elements when choosing a home. Your neighbourhood is a reflection of your personality and lifestyle, and therefore, a primary feature when choosing your new home. Many factors play into location, including how far it is from work and whether a backyard is essential to your daily routine. It can be considered a trade-off sometimes: sacrificing a benefit for an essential. You may want to ask yourself certain questions before deciding on a certain location: Do you want to be able to walk from place to place? Do you want a big backyard? Is driving to the grocery store a necessity? A neighbourhood’s temperament is also important when looking at a home. For suburban homes, especially in newer developments, homes are often built around schools and other amenities such as gyms and community clubs, while living central will give your home character. However, often a central home’s location has comparable property taxes to a more suburban area. It’s also a good idea to consult with your realtor about opening the search to other neighbourhoods that have similar attributes to your ideal location, because that may end up being where you find your dream home.

LOVE YOUR HOME
New Building For homebuyers who are looking for a short-term residency, buying new may not be the best decision. Newer homes depreciate quickly unless you plan on living in them for a while. For long-term residency, there are a number of benefits when buying or building new, such as hardwood flooring, stainless steel appliances and no scratches. New homes normally have the latest in home design such as polished stone countertops and hardwood floors. If you’re building new, you have the freedom to choose. As well, new homes often have extra amenities such as pools, a large garage and a big backyard for the kids.
Condos For many, condos often feel like downsizing because it’s attributed to young couples and empty nesters. However, more and more condos

home. Furthermore, condo fees take care the building’s maintenance as well as other updates associated with the structure — so you don’t have to.
Renovating and Simple Updates Home renovation and simple updates are one of the most exciting aspects when creating the perfect home. Removing carpet for hardwood, taking down a wall or replacing the windows in the living room will change the way you view your home and how others perceive it as well. One of the most common renovations is creating an open concept inside by taking down walls. Whether it’s opening up the dining room to look out onto the living room, or making the master bedroom larger, tearing down a wall can instantly modernize and expand a living space. For many homes, a garage door is one of the first things people see. Now more than ever, there’s a myriad of garage door options to fit your lifestyle and your home’s esthetic. There’s the French style, reminiscent of the French countryside as well as the old-world feel of a carriage garage door.
are being built to promote long-term residency with larger spaces and more rooms. Condos also offer a myriad of amenities for families including fitness facilities, grocery stores, pharmacies and pools. Condos are also built within neighbourhoods that are lively, or centrally and conveniently located within close proximity to convention centres, community parks and other types of entertainment that can be enjoyed within a five-minute walk from
For bathrooms, bedrooms or your foyer, a chandelier is an instant stunning addition to your living space. A chandelier adds a dramatic flair guests will immediately appreciate and whether it’s a classic, modern or avant-garde look you’re going for — a chandelier is where you’ll find it. Further accents for a room can be anything from candles to flowers to art. Yet, if there’s one accent interior designers recommend more than anything, it’s mirrors. Mirrors expand a smaller room’s space, but also catch the natural light from outside, creating a limitless feel within the room. Mirrors are also a beautiful addition to a room’s space, and like chandeliers, create a highconcept living space. Painting is one of the biggest and simplest overall changes you can make in a room. However, if you’re looking for a richer mood, perhaps wallpaper will tickle your fancy. Wallpaper is elegant and worldly, but it also adds texture to the walls that paint normally does not. One wall of paper can instantly elevate a room’s design and there are many options to choose, from the fleur de lis pattern to a simple white on white pattern.

“We had been living in our new house for almost 3 years and still didn’t have window coverings because I really had no idea what I wanted. I phone Budget Blinds and they had someone out right away. My style consultant Natalie was great! She asked me a few questions to figure out what I was looking for. She suggested the roller shades and I love them! They do exactly what she said they would, help keep the sun out but still allow me to see out when they are down. The installers were great and worked quickly, they were even great with my boys who followed them around watching and asking them 20 questions about what they were doing. I recommend Natalie and Budget Blinds to anyone who is needing new window coverings.”

The RE/MAX® Blue Chip Realty team includes a nine-member ag sales team, three commercial agents, 24 residential agents and their support staff. The RE/ MAX® Blue Chip philosophy has always been that great people will make a great business. When a client comes to RE/MAX® Blue Chip and develops a working relationship with a particular agent, he or she might not notice the network of support behind the scenes. The owners emphasize that each member of the team is integral to the overall success. “The most distinguished thing about this company is that we learned how to find and retain people who are ethical and trustworthy,” says Wruth. “We look for people who are service focused, rather than sales focused.” Since its inception, RE/MAX® Blue Chip Realty has been recognized with many awards and honours, and the past year was no exception. Enhancing Business through Social Entrepreneurship By Sarah Vermette

“The goal of any business is to make money. Companies that are innovating to improve their bottom line while improving the environment or the lives of people should be rewarded,” says
“There is a fundamental shift that is starting to emerge in North American markets. People want to support companies and causes that are contributing to society,” says German. Confirming the importance of this trend is the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize awarded

to Muhammad Yunus, who exemplified what can be accomplished by marrying business principles with social ventures. Internet based, with users around the world, OneStory is a relatively simple platform with far-reaching effects. German and Dale Zak started with the idea that they could make capturing seniors’ stories easy for their families. “As we thought through the business model for this idea, we realized that there is nothing more powerful than a story to create change. So we created a platform for people to easily tell their stories for others to learn from. It’s perfect for causes, small business, individuals and corporations,” explains German.
“There is no doubt that the OneStory app gave us a huge spike in impressions during our campaign.” #YYCisOpen “Nowadays we are trying to change many things all around the world in order to make the world a better place. Telling stories is a great way of getting into people’s hearts.” Halifax Hub “This project [with OneStory.com] exceeded our expectations in terms of the videos created and the value to the students. Not only did we create a powerful learning experience, we also created videos that the public can learn from.” Jacqueline Helman, Saskatoon Public Schools representative
With the technical savvy of Zak, whose last app was created for the United Nations, and the marketing wisdom of German, who was nominated for a national DigiAward for social media strategy in 2013, OneStory grew quickly. They have launched several campaigns, which have reached millions of people and through which hundreds have contributed their voice, such as Women in Technology, Ask or Tell Us a Love Story and Thank a Teacher. Also of note is that German is amongst only three per cent of women who are founders in the technology industry. Well aware of this reality, German, who has also shared her stories on OneStory, says it can be used to encourage other women and young people to get involved. “This is my passion,” says German. “OneStory gives people a voice.” People can share their story or access stories on the Internet at onestory.com. The mobile phone app makes it easy to capture stories on the go — anywhere and anytime. Free for the user, people use OneStory to create unique wedding videos, tell an isolated story and gather video content for activism. But it’s widely used by businesses as a tool to gather client testimonials. Conferences are also a large market for OneStory as people are gathering material for social media from speakers and attendees before, during and after the event. Businesses using OneStory recognize how contributing to society can benefit their bottom line. German and Zak began by realizing everybody has a story and asking how they could leverage those stories to create change. Now, German says, “We have created a tool that anyone can use.”

oel Bartlett is excited to be bringing his business back home. Working primarily out of Regina, the owner of Tristen Hydro-vac Services has been a mainstay in the province’s hydro vac excavation, safe variable pressure digging and steam jetting business for the last 15 years. But now Bartlett and his team are expanding their business to Weyburn, the neck of the woods Bartlett was born and raised. “It’s exciting to be back here in the Weyburn and Yellowgrass area where I grew up,” he says. “We’ve been doing

work in the area for a long time, but now we’re officially part of the scene here. It’s coming home.” In order to expand, you need to have a solid foundation, and Bartlett says he’s proud of what the name Tristen Hydrovac has come to mean. With the highest safety standards, and a commitment to hire local professionals, his company prides itself on its reliability. The company offers complete hydrovac services and portable toilet rental to commercial, industrial and residential
clients. They’ve partnered with companies like SaskEnergy, SaskPower, SaskTel and Mosaic, as well as the City of Regina and City of Weyburn. With a fleet of six, fully-equipped trucks, Bartlett and his team are ready to handle projects 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In the province’s expanding oil sector, they’re also the company to turn to for steam jetting, tank washing and clean-up of most oilfield and industrial equipment. When it comes to outfitting work sites or events, the company offers portable
toilets and units, both heated and nonheated, that can be delivered right to the site, with professional set-up and maintenance. Bartlett says their goal of providing affordable, high quality services is always at the top of mind when approaching any new job or partnership. In a competitive industry, and one that Bartlett says is in high demand right now, reputation is everything. “For us, it really comes down to good people, the best equipment and the highest safety standards,” Bartlett explains. Bartlett is proud to point out that his company is certified with the following safety programs: COREnform, ISNetworld approved, Comply Works Compliant, PICS certified. His team members are certified in H2S Alive, Confined Space Entry 2, Ground Disturbance 2, First Aid & CPR/AED, Fire Extinguisher, WHMIS, TDG, Safe Trenching, and Fall Protection. Tristen Hydro-vac also aims to work with the best equipment on the market, and replace it every two or three years. This not only makes the jobs more efficient, but also helps keep the job sites and the team members safe. While the track record of completing big projects, safely and quickly, is enough to bank on, Bartlett emphasizes that his company also stands for friendly and professional service. Building good relationships with partners and clients is the best way to ensure your business is a success. Joel Bartlett would like to send a special thanks to Crescent Point Energy, Enerplus and CCT Controls for making his transition back to Weyburn and area an easy one. Their existing clients in the Weyburn area have already come to know Tristen Hydro-vac’s solid approach to every job they do. Bartlett says he’s thrilled to get to know many new hometown clients in the future. Tristen Hydro-vac Services Hwy 35 South, Weyburn 306.861.1861 joelbartlett1@hotmail.com www.tristenhydrovac.ca

past 34 years. Patrons of their restaurant have come to expect friendly service along with their tasty meals. But now the Georgacacos family has even more to offer — liquor delivery, to their customers’ tables, or right to their doors. “When we first thought of opening this store there was always the idea that we would offer liquor delivery, in and out of town,” Anna explains. “It’s important to me to do something that can stop people
from drinking and driving. Keep them safe and offer something convenient at the same time.” Any of the domestic or imported items sold at the Liquor Spot can be delivered in one of the store’s brightly painted and lit Booze Cruiser vehicles, or dropped off at their nearby restaurant for customers to take on their way out. Anna notes liquor is available for delivery, with or without a food order. It’s a handy service,

especially during the holiday season when unexpected visitors are sure to pop by and festive parties abound. There’s also plenty to see in-store. The Liquor Spot is a one-stop-shop right around the corner from Town and Country. Inside, shoppers can grab a hot slice of pizza, along with their bottle of wine or cold case of beer. The store also sells cigarettes and cigars. With an entire section reserved for beer and wine accessories, bottle openers, corkscrews, wine aerators and gift bags, the Liquor Spot is also an easy place to shop for holiday presents. Anna says the path to opening the store, from the initial idea, through the tender
and permit process, and finally to building and renovation, has been a long one. And because it’s quite different than running a restaurant, the learning curve has been steep. But Anna says the community support so far has been great, with many people expressing their excitement about the store and delivery service. “I think people are eager to see the store and have a place for off-sale that’s not attached to a bar. We’re open to suggestions about what brands and lines people want us to carry, too.” For now, visitors and residents of the city can easily order by calling the restaurant line, and in the near future Anna hopes to have an online ordering system in place. “It would
be a way to make something convenient, even easier for our customers, so we’re hoping to offer that soon.” The Liquor Spot encourages clients to be safe this holiday season, and with their new liquor delivery service it’s easier than ever.

t’s a sunny afternoon and Chantal Brown’s mind is filled with happy thoughts of her babies. One is her toddling, one year old son, Angus. The other is a vibrant gift and decor store in downtown Weyburn called The Void. “I’m on maternity leave, and it’s great being home, but we’re in the store all the time too. I love being there, with all the fantastic customers and our staff,” says Brown. “We try to make it the kind of place that people can just come to and feel at home.” When Brown talks about The Void, she does so with a kind of parental pride. Watching The Void grow,

from the small body jewellery store she opened ten years ago with her parents, Scott and Anita Brown, to the successful and stylish two-floor boutique it is now, has been an exciting journey. The Void is clearly a labour of love, and one that extends not just to the store itself, or her staff of five, but also to every customer who walks through the door. “I feel very lucky to have this store in a place like Weyburn, where everyone is just so nice,” says Brown. “The people here, and in the surrounding community have just really supported us over the years, and we’ve learned how to be the kind of store that
RIDE appeals to them too. We’ve worked to figure out our clientele, and what they want.” Brown and her mother often work together to choose the product lines. Coming from different generations, yet having that same eye for what customers want and expect from The Void, has been one of the keys to the store’s success. “We look for things that are new and different, of course, but we often have specific people in mind as well. There are so many times when I’ve thought, ‘this is exactly the kind of purse that customer would buy’ or ‘this is definitely her style’,” explains Brown. Whenever possible, The Void also likes to showcase products by Canadian and local designers. New to the store’s jewellery section, and already proving to be very popular, are stunning earrings and necklaces from the sparkle ball collection of Hillberg & Berk, founded by Regina-based designer and entrepreneur Rachel Mielke. Brown says she’s thrilled to sell a popular Saskatchewan brand in her store. The Void has also become a marketplace for original work by Simple With A Twist. The canvas art pieces are created by Weyburn mother and daughter artists Heather van der Breggen and Rickee-Lee Webster. “People really love their work and it’s nice to find that special, hand-made piece for your home.” Some other popular items are vegan bags and purses from Montreal-based company, Matt & Nat, clothing and accessories by Desigual and a new addition — boots from Canadian footwear brand Taxi. Browns says selling one-of-a-kind and local items next to more well-known brands means that customers have a unique and interesting selection to choose from. One of her favourite things is seeing customers taking the time to browse, and commenting how they always discover something

bathing and nursing products, Robeez footwear, and the fashionable Timi & Leslie diaper bags are hot sellers. Just this year, The Void also began selling Mexx clothing for kids and Brown says the customer response has been phenomenal.
In recent years, one of the store’s biggest draws has been the main-floor baby boutique, offering a wide selection of good-quality, baby clothing, gifts and accessories. Brown says the baby products are a hit not just with moms and moms-to-be, but also grandparents and friends looking to find something a little more high-end and exclusive for that special baby in their life.
The best way to experience all The Void has to offer is by coming in. Brown says compared to online shopping, where you can never really touch or examine the products you buy, a trip to her friendly and eclectic store gives you the chance to see what you’re getting. You might even make that special discovery you didn’t even know you were looking for .
Well-made products are important when she considers buying for her own son, so Brown tries to offer that same standard to her customers. Brands like Boon feeding,

Prepare for Winter Driving

n the hectic lives most of us lead these days, things often slip our minds, especially if they only occur once a year. Preparing vehicles for winter can be one of these, as we usually don’t think about it until that first snowstorm hits. Unfortunately, that may be too late. The following information will help you prepare your vehicles for winter. Tires: Check the air pressure in each tire and confirm it matches what is listed on the information plate located on the driver’s door pillar — higher or lower will affect handling and tread wear. Check the tread wear and run actual winter tires if possible — their tread and rubber compound are designed specifically for winter and they give better performance at lower temperatures, starting at about five degrees and on down to about -30 degrees.
66
FineLifestyles
Estevan / Weyburn
BaTTery: If three to five years old you may want a load test done. If not sealed, check the cell levels and strength, ensure terminal connections are clean and tight, and confirm battery is secure and not sitting loose. If you have a battery warmer confirm it is working — a battery warmer can help with those cold weather starts. Oil: Check for leaks and consider using lighter grade synthetic oil, which should help with cold winter starts as well as fuel mileage. Switching oils may be an issue with some engines, so be sure to ask your oil retailer before switching. engine cOOlanT: Check for leaks, as well as the level and strength. BlOck heaTer: Does it work? Circulating types lead to faster engine start and warm-up, which is easier on your engine.
WinDshielD Washer fluiD: Fill the washer reservoir with winter fluid so it is less likely to freeze. WinDshielD scraPer anD Brush: Keep one in the vehicle — when you use it, clean all windows as well as the top of the vehicle. Give special attention to the air intakes located at the bottom of the windshield as snow in them can cause your windows to frost up on the inside from your heater. I’m sure you have seen the person who, after a snowfall, is driving down the road with a very small hole scraped in the frost to peek through and half a foot of snow on top of the vehicle — this is a very dangerous practice. It takes very little time to properly clear the frost and snow from the windows, hood and roof of a vehicle. Poor visibility greatly increases your chances of being involved in a collision while the height and weight of snow on top of your vehicle will reduce your fuel mileage, which isn’t great in the winter to begin with. lOck De-icer: Always have some handy in your coat pocket — not in the vehicle where it won’t do much good if the locks are frozen. fuel: Try not to let your fuel level get below half a tank in the winter as low levels allow for condensation to form in the tank, which can lead to water and ice in your fuel as well as possible tank corrosion — these can then lead to poor
starting, poor fuel economy and potential vehicle breakdown on the road. You also want as full a tank as possible in the event you become stranded. Next, what do you need if you break down or become stuck? The following are some suggestions. Shovel, tow rope, flashlight, blankets or sleeping bags, reflective tape, energy food (water and granola bars), extra clothes (socks, heavy mitts, warm winter hat, boots, scarf and coveralls), traction material (sand, cat litter, traction plates), and candles with a can to burn them in as well as matches or lighter. For rear wheel drive vehicles place extra weight in the back for better traction. Bags of sand are good for this and can also be broken open and thrown under the tires if you become stuck. For pickups, sidewalk blocks are heavy and don’t interfere with most cargo. Whatever you use, be sure to secure the items so they don’t fly forward causing damage or injury in the event of a head-on collision or emergency braking. And what if you do breakdown or become stuck? Always stay with your vehicle — if the vehicle is on or by a road, it will be found. Hang reflective tape off your antenna. Run the engine for 10 minutes of
every hour, or every half hour in extreme cold. Turn on heater and dome light when engine is running. Beware of carbon monoxide — keep exhaust pipe clear of snow and open a downwind window slightly. Keep outside heater vents (below the windshield) clear. Do minor exercises and huddle together for warmth. Finally, as soon as you are faced with snow or freezing rain and their aftermath — slow down and increase your following distance. Reduce your speed in blizzards and blowing snow since you can’t see as well. Use extra caution if passing snowploughs — they usually pull over every few kilometers anyway so it might be safer to wait. Don’t use cruise control on slippery road surfaces as it can throw you out of control (this also applies to engine retarders). Check weather and highway reports before leaving. Choose well-travelled roads over those less frequented. Having four-wheel drive does not let you stop any faster so slow down and maintain a safe following distance. If you insist on driving like it’s summer, I hear Australia is nice this time of year. Joking aside, may you all have a healthy, happy winter wherever you may be, and please drive safely.

A CLOSER LOOK AT
“FRACKING”:
DISPELLING MISCONCEPTIONS
W
By Paul Huber
hen an industry practice such as hydraulic fracturing comes under public scrutiny, misconceptions are bound to arise. Engineers working within the industry are tired of the negative publicity and are looking for common sense discussion on the topic. They believe “fracking” represents innovation that brings a safer, more efficient and more environmentallyfriendly method of oil and gas extraction. Fracking, the process of creating fractures in rocks and rock formations by injecting fluid into cracks to force them open and allow more oil and gas to flow out into the wellbore, has a long history in Saskatchewan. The process was first used in the early 1950s, and by the mid-2000s, fracking of horizontal wells was underway, giving an increased viability to old and tired oil fields. Fracking has also been actively regulated in Saskatchewan for some time, protecting environmental standards and ensuring public safety. Current legislation pertaining to oil development includes The Oil and Gas Conservation Act, The Oil and Gas Conservation Regulations 2012, and the Saskatchewan Hydraulic Fracturing Fluids and Propping Agents Containment and Disposal Guidelines.
68
Cam Taylor, COO of Villanova 4 Oil Corporation, explains the corporate viewpoint for a properly regulated industry. “Oil development is very well regulated in places like Saskatchewan and Alberta with a long history of regulating drilling and fracturing. This regulatory framework allows the best safety practices learned over the years to become entrenched in the regulations. Any deviations from what is normal are extremely expensive for companies and usually result in a complete failure of the well, so companies themselves are very highly motivated to keep the entire frac product and energy contained within a thin zone way deep down.” Water usage threat posed by frac fluids is another outstanding concern. Ed Dancsok points out, “…in Saskatchewan the use of freshwater is closely regulated by the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority and Saskatchewan Water Corporation. Before an oil and gas company can use any freshwater in its development or productions operations, they must acquire an approval or permit from the aforementioned agencies.” The chemical additives, which make up less than one percent of total fluid volumes, are typical of those chemicals commonly used in household, cosmetic, medical and agricultural products.
A key element of the legislation regulates the design and drilling of wells to eliminate any movement of fluid coming back up from the wellbore. Ed Dancsok, assistant deputy minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas at Saskatchewan’s Ministry of the Economy, elaborates, “Making sure wells and drilling strictly follow regulatory specs eliminates the threats of seepage.” Steel casing and cement with triple redundancy ensures the environmental integrity of these wells.
Water usage is minor for this industry in Saskatchewan; in fact, oil and gas water usage in Saskatchewan is minute compared to other sectors. Agriculture uses the majority of freshwater at approximately 67 per cent, communities about 21 per cent, mining at three per cent, thermal power production at two per cent, and oil and gas at approximately one per cent. Many companies point out there is huge economic incentive to manage water appropriately and avoid any risks to surface and ground water.
Some jurisdictions allow storage of frac fluid in open pits, while Saskatchewan regulates that all flow-back fluids be captured in a fully closed loop system and disposed of through approved waste management facilities where the treated used fluid is either recycled or injected into deep subsurface formation to prevent surface and groundwater contamination.
Over the past 50 years, some 40,000 oil and gas wells have been hydraulically fractured in this province and no documented cases of impacts to freshwater have ever been recorded. Regulation and good industry practices are ongoing and evolving, helping to develop a successful provincial oil and gas sector.

sectors by bringing in a new flow of contract service and production. Born and raised in the Weyburn area, Andrew Shanaida moved away after high school to undergo training as a machinist and to work in the oil industry in Alberta. When it came time to settle down and raise a family, he decided to return to Weyburn. He and wife Alison opened Chip 9 Machining in 2004. Since then, they
have been proud to provide the people of Weyburn and area with high quality manufactured parts and repair work.
Oil and Gas Industry Chip 9 Machining provides a wide range of oilfield services. They build and repair everything from CO2 stuffing boxes, wrist pins and saddles to equalizers, tails and brake liners. Specializing in pump jack repairs, they reverse engineer older jacks
to newer more readily available bearings or liner conversions. They also weld in jet kits on down-hole drill bits, repairs slips for service rigs, manufacture prototype down-hole tooling of various types and re-line pump jack brakes. “Andrew has lots of ideas and gives lots of input. He is always willing to try anything. He offers great service and a good product,” says Rick Anderson of Cenovus who has worked with Andrew to manufacture CO2 stuffing box conversions.
Agricultural Industry
Farming is very time-sensitive. Farmers need their equipment to run well when the weather is co-operating — a breakdown can be disastrous. Chip 9 Machining produces specialty tools and repairs for farm equipment. They also manufacture replacements for anything from hydraulic cylinder parts to large custom attachments, tractor pins and bearing surfaces. Whatever you require, you can rest assured they will have your equipment up and running again quickly.
Railway Industry
Chip 9 Machining makes and repairs hand tools for the rail lines, and retrofit the service trucks for use on the rails. “Andrew is very good at what he does,” says Bud Rosiak of CP Rail. “He does excellent, quality work in a timely manner. I have gone to him for lots of structural work for our trucks — installing handrails,

metal toolboxes and tool racks. He definitely knows what he is doing.”
Gunsmithing
Chip 9 Machining is easy to locate in Weyburn — simply look for the large gun. They stock a wide array of firearms, from handguns to semi-automatic rifles. They are also a Glock stocking dealer. While many accessories can be found in stock at the shop (ammunition, scopes, lasers and holsters), the company specializes in AR15 custom parts. In their gunsmith shop they repair firearms, re-blue guns and manufacture parts. People come into the shop seeking to improve and customize their pieces.
Andrew, Alison and family at Chip 9 Machining would like to thank everyone who has helped to make their first 10 years in business such a success. If your ideas need a starting point, Chip 9 Machining is the right place and now is the right time!

NEW DESIGN, NEW CROSSOVER,
NEW THRILL By Tobie Hainstock
What is it about the new Porsche Cayenne that sets this luxury SUV apart from the rest? Is it the sharper design, boosted efficiency, the extensive set of standard options or maybe it’s the fact that it bears a name that’s synonymous with impeccable quality and sleek, stylish design? “The Porsche Cayenne is really the sports car version of an SUV (sport utility vehicle),” comments Dave Engelmann, media relations manager for Porsche Cars North America Inc.

The New Cayenne Line
T
hings just keep on getting better! According to Engelmann, Porsche has just announced the thrilling new design of the Cayenne line which will debut in the American market in early November.
Engelmann advises that the new generation of the Cayenne will be launched in four exciting models in the US which include: Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo, and the world premiere of the Cayenne S E-Hybrid, which is the first plug-in hybrid in the premium SUV segment. This model, together with the Panamera S E-Hybrid and the 918 Spyder, make Porsche the world’s only car manufacturer to offer three plug-in hybrid models. Another exciting feature on the new Cayenne is the dynamic 3.6 liter twin-turbo V6 engine for the S model. This new engine demonstrates both improved performance and fuel economy compared to previous models. Looking at the Cayenne’s new design can really get the adrenaline flowing as you notice the precision in the lines and the light refracting edges. Engelmann points out that the design of the front body, the front fenders and the hood are all completely new. The new Cayenne features Bi-Xenon™ headlights include four-point LED daytime running lights. The Cayenne Turbo offers high performance LED headlights with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) as a standard feature. The interior of the Cayenne was created with the driver’s comfort in mind. “The new

multifunction sport steering wheel features standard shift paddles. The look and functions are based on the steering wheel of the 918 Spyder,” says Engelmann. When redesigning the Cayenne, power and torque were also boosted. This was achieved through modifications to the drivetrain. Active air flaps being used for the first time and are located behind the center air intake. Controlled by engine management; the air flaps are opened or closed according to the specific driving situation and cooling demands. The air flaps are able to adjust the air volume available for cooling. When they are closed they improve aerodynamics reducing air drag and improving fuel economy.
The New Kid on the Block Brand new to the Cayenne lineup is the thrilling Macan which is being introduced in 2015. Named after the Indonesian word for Tiger, the Macan is a light-footed crossover vehicle with ferocious power that provides the excitement of driving something sporty with the practicality of a utility vehicle. “Because the Macan is compact, it’s not quite a full size SUV but still has pulling and toting capabilities,” says Engelmann. Sporty and dynamic, the Macan can take you from the adventures of the off road
trails to the glamour of the city lights with ease. There are two models to choose from, the Macan S which features a 3.0 liter V6 twin turbo engine delivering 340 hp and is equipped with active all-wheel drive with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. The seven speed double-clutch transmission shifts without any interruption which enables the Macan to move from zero to 60 mph in an impressive 5.2 seconds. With a 3.6 liter V6 twin turbo engine that offers 400 hp and accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, the Macan Turbo is considered to be the most powerful vehicle in the compact SUV category. “The Macan Turbo can reach a top track speed of 164 miles per hour,” adds Engelmann.
The Thrill of the Cayenne Experience “When it comes to driving Porsche there really is nothing like it,” remarks Engelmann, “There’s no substitute for the style and ingenuity. When you own a Porsche Cayenne you know you really have something special.” The quality of the Cayenne combined with the experience of driving the SUV is second to none. www.porsche.com

t’s easy to stay active during the warm summer months, but it’s not unusual to see people become sedentary in the winter in an attempt to stay out of the cold. However, residents of the community of Carnduff don’t allow winter to deter their activity. “Like any town in Saskatchewan, skating and curling rinks are the hub of the community in the winter,” says Tara Beck, Carnduff community development officer. According to recreation director, Shane Marsh, the Carnduff Centennial Arena opened October 1st for senior and Midget hockey, figure skating and CanSkate. As home to the Carnduff Junior and Senior Red Devils, the arena sees a high level of activity throughout the season. “This year we are thrilled to be hosting Hockey Day in Saskatchewan, January 16th to 18th,” adds Marsh. The community will host a full weekend of great hockey festivities, which will assist in raising money for upgrades to the arena. The event will take place in an outdoor rink in the Carnduff Memorial Park. Marsh adds that the weekend will wrap up on Sunday with a non-denominational church service and final game. For those who love to bonspiel, the Carnduff Curling Club kicks off its season in early November. The curling club offers town residents the opportunity to get out and enjoy the challenge of the sport. “Glow curling is held one Friday a month,” notes Beck, “it’s a great evening of fun for all ages.” She encourages those interested in participating to check out Facebook for event dates and further information. “We are also very fortunate to have a high level of outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, tobogganing and more,” states Beck. For those who prefer to stay indoors, Carnduff Bowl, located at 810 Railway Avenue, offers many evenings of fun for league members and public participants. Younger members of the community can also enjoy clubs such as archery, boxing, gymnastics and more.
Community service clubs such as the Lions Club and Royal Canadian Legion offer programs and functions throughout the year. They are an active part of the welcoming lifestyle offered by the friendly people of Carnduff. Seniors in Carnduff can enjoy gathering at the Friendship Centre for cards, dinners and other social events throughout the week. “The United Church women host ‘Market Days’ the first Friday of the month until Christmas,” remarks Beck. This is a great opportunity to meet with friends and neighbours to purchase produce, preserves, home baking and other fantastic treasures people of all ages will appreciate. The Christmas season starts off on Thursday, November 6th, with the Country Christmas Kick-Off, which is sponsored by the Carnduff and District Business Organization. “It’s a great time with late night shopping, sleigh rides, a free movie and lots more,” exclaims Beck. A great time for young and old alike, this event really jump-starts the holidays. Whether you have children going to school or not, who can pass up the Christmas concert put on by the children of the Carnduff Education Complex? The show attracts family, neighbours and others from near and far. Check the school website for details at www. cornerstonesd.ca. For the movie lover, the Carnduff Community Theatre offers some great entertainment throughout the cold winter months too. Enjoy a variety of movie genres, including animated children’s features, romantic comedies, action adventures, thrillers and dramas. With so much going on throughout the winter months, one can hardly refer to Carnduff as a ‘sleepy little town.’ Clearly the community of 1,200 residents has a strong spirit of togetherness and a zest for quality living that makes it difficult to spend the winter months stuck on the couch. www.carnduff.ca

A Christmas Carol Comes to Life in Carlyle By Rebecca Henderson
C
ome the first weekend of December in Carlyle, Sask., don’t be surprised to see a man counting his change and muttering “Bah! Humbug,” while walking down the street. For Carlyle residents and visitors, this is Ebenezer Scrooge, and he’s making his twelfth appearance at the town’s annual Dickens festival that celebrates the Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. “Lots of kids love to approach him,” says Dickens Festival organizer Shelley Slykhuis. “They will play bantering games — it’s quite fun to watch.” Scrooge will also enter stores during the festival, warning patrons to save their money.

Carlyle is the only community in Canada to hold the Dickens’ Festival, and people from all over North America — and even around the world — come to visit and find entertainment in a town transformed by early Victorian era Britain. “Last year, we had a woman travel from Prince Albert, Sask. who is British,” recalls Slykhuis. “She was impressed by our town’s dedication to authenticity.” Carlyle’s Main Street is lined with 35 specially-made English lanterns, and businesses are encouraged to hang red bows, green garlands and white lights along their shops.
During the weekend, men will don top hats and ladies will wear long skirts, capes, aprons and hats. Even kids get into the spirit and will turn into small street urchins, begging for money and bartering with Mister Scrooge. Festivities begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Residents and visitors will gather at Fezzwig’s Family Pub for free entertainment and a traditional lunch of stew and biscuits served by the local museum. Up next is the festival of trees, where locals donate a themed tree to be auctioned off for charity. The United Church then serves high tea from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. along with
petite sandwiches and scones. The church also provides traditional hats for tea and if the weather permits, free horse-drawn carriage rides are offered to high tea as well. For shopping, Slykhuis says 14 businesses are part of the Tiny Tim’s Tasting Tour. “Businesses participate by serving hot chocolate, cream puffs and mini-donuts to patrons on the tour.” However, Slykhuis recommends not filling up on too many desserts before dinner because that’s when the savoury treats appear. The Catholic Church, where you’ll find Slykhuis, serves clam chowder, corn chowder and chicken soup. The Fire Hall serves smoked turkey legs, while the Lion’s Club serves baked potatoes and the Youth Group provides smokies on a stick. “There’s also mini-donuts, chili in a bread bowl and shepherd’s pie,” says Slykhuis. After dinner, the Lighted Parade runs through town, and rumour has it, “Saskatoon cancelled their parade one year the same year we had 31 entries,” muses Slykhuis. Bah! Humbug! At night, it’s important not to miss the local drama club’s version of A Christmas Carol, which Slykhuis says sells out up to three weeks in advance. “It’s a musical comedy version of Dickens’ classic,” she says. “Last year it was A Texan Christmas Carol.” For those who are unable to make it on Saturday evening, there is a matinee performance of the show on Sunday as well. The Dickens Festival runs Dec. 5 to 7.
