Praised for its versatility and its ability to turn heads, the LBD is something every woman should own at least one of – though the variety of shapes, drapes, cuts and fabrics make nearly every LBD unique. s exciting as it is to travel and see the world, our holidays are often as exhausting as the everyday grind we're trying to unwind from. ats are truly amazing creatures; from the large lion to the common household pet, their diversity is quite impressive. Greatly loved, domesticated cats have become a very common pet with close to 100-million felines residing in Canada and the United States alone. In general, cats will acquire 30 adult teeth within the first six months of life. They depend on these teeth for the rest of their lives, which can be as many as 15 to 20 years. Cats certainly experience their fair share of dental issues, as would we without regularly maintaining our oral hygiene.

There are a number of different problems we frequently diagnose in cat patients and unfortunately most are fairly uncomfortable for them to deal with. Cats can be incredibly difficult to “read” and will hide pain until they simply can’t any longer, which can make it challenging for cat owners to notice a problem in its early stages. Without examining the cat’s mouth it’s impossible to know if a problem exists and how serious it may be. Feline Resorptive Lesions (FRLs) are particularly common in cats, affecting 29 to 38 per cent of the population, and is a disease unique to the feline species. FRLs generally develop in older cats, but I have seen them in cats as young as three. Essentially, a tooth will begin to undergo a process of self-destruction or “resorption.” The enamel may then be lost, causing a hole to develop in the sensitive pulp chamber. The destruction may also develop in the root of the tooth, which greatly affects the strength and integrity of the tooth as a whole. Another problem unique to cats is stomatitis. This is inflammation and infection of the gums, lips and tongue. In

its most pronounced form it can present as a glaring sore in the back of a cat’s mouth. If a cat develops stomatitis it is generally a sign of underlying problems such as severe tartar and gingivitis. This can progress into a chronic disease, as some cats will become hypersensitive to plaque and will have a breakout with even the slightest build-up. There are many products available that can help maintain your pets’ oral hygiene, although dogs have gotten the most attention in the marketplace. Diets, treats, water additives, and most importantly, specially sized toothbrushes have been made for cats and, just like for people, daily maintenance is key to preventing serious and costly issues. There is always risk with any medical procedure — infection, bleeding and nerve damage are possible. However, these complications are very rare. Some patients are at higher risk of complications. Your doctor will discuss this with you before any treatment is given.

H OW LO N G IS A PRP TREATMENT? PRP is performed in a 45-minute office visit. Blood is drawn and placed in a special centrifuge. The blood is then spun so the platelets can be separated from the red blood cells. Once concentrated, the platelets are used to treat the affected area. HOW OFTEN ARE INJECTIONS GIVEN? There is always a follow-up visit scheduled for six weeks following the first treatment. Most patients respond very well to the first treatment. In some cases up to three treatments may be needed, but this is not the norm. Often one treatment will yield profound results. You will be able to determine after the first visit what you may expect from future treatments. W H AT I S T H E S U CC E SS RATE? We see 80 per cent of patients achieve pain relief. Periodically, patients achieve 100 per cent relief after one treatment — this is best-case scenario. The best part about this therapy is that the results are permanent. Once new tissue has grown, it remains. PRP is the polar opposite of conventional cortisone injections, which will weaken the tissues over time — it is a great alternative to surgery. “I told Vaughn we want this to be great and even though Saskatoon is small, we want this to be the first in Canada,” says Furano. “I want to have retractable glass roofs so even in winter you can feel you’re outside with snow falling. We’ll have fires going. I know it gets cold up there!” The ConCepT Rock & Brews is “an energized dining and entertainment concept” featuring affordable, high quality American comfort food, including wings, salads, burgers, sandwiches and pizza, along with a variety of diet-conscious, gluten free and healthy options. There’s a broad selection of international and craft brews, and guests enjoy a family-friendly rock ‘n’ roll experience. The restaurant caters to “li’l rockers” too, with a special menu and crayons to colour placemats. The Lore In the summer of 2010, highly respected concert tour manager Dave Furano, his brother, concert merchandising industry pioneer Dell Furano, and restaurateur/hotelier extraordinaire Michael Zislis got together for a KISS concert. While backstage, enjoying a cold beer and visiting with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, Dave said, “What’s better than rock and brews?” Brainstorming ensued — engaging the diverse talents and creative energy of the five friends bound together by their love of concert rock — and Rock & Brews was born. The LoCaL Legend It looks like this kind of cool will work out well north of the border as Vaughn Wyant, Saskatoon business magnate, has signed on to work with Gene, Shannon and the Formosa group of Vancouver to launch the first Canadian Rock & Brews. While Vaughn has a “high opinion of the of the business climate in Saskatoon, and Saskatchewan as a whole,” it’s the “kind of cool and interesting twist,” that is Rock & Brews, along with Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed — that piqued his interest. While prospective locations are still being toured, and opening dates are not even being considered yet, there is a lot of optimism around the project. “I’m in the beer business (Great West Brewery), maybe we can work with Gene to produce some proprietary brews,” adds Vaughn with a chuckle. The roCk god KISS bassist and singer Gene Simmons stands behind Rock & Brews wholeheartedly. “My favourite thing at the restaurant,” he begins, “depends on whether I come here to do some real damage. You can’t beat the burger. You cannot wrap your lips around the burgers; they’re so big! We’ve got gluten free beers and pizzas. I have to watch my girlish figure so the salads are out of this world. Everything is tasty, so you can’t lose. Food’s got to look good, then smell good, then it’s got to taste good,” Simmons says.

Shannon was there and he said, ‘You know, it’s taken me a lifetime to know the importance of this reunion.’ Shannon’s bawling, I’m bawling, the whole place is bawling. It was really special.”

Couples planning their nuptials might want to take note, especially if they’re KISS fans. “The plan is for Gene to perform weddings at the grand opening,” says Dave Furano,

The succulent flavour from the Saskatchewan cherries holds on the palate, while the finish leaves you dreaming of candied fruits and warm fires.

Baked apple with Cinnamon and Crème FraîChe

ChoColate Fondant The secret is in the timing: don’t guess! 9 tbsp. unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 1 tbsp. pure cocoa powder, plus extra for dusting 5 oz. dark chocolate, broken into pieces 1/2 cup caster sugar 3 small eggs 3 small egg yolks 1 cup plain flour, sifted 4 3/4 cup oven-proof moulds 1.

Preheat oven to 200°C. Thoroughly grease moulds and dust lightly with extra cocoa powder. Melt butter and chocolate in a bowl over a bainmarie. In a large bowl, beat together sugar, eggs and egg yolks until light and pale. Pour melted butter and chocolate over egg mix. Fold in sifted flour and cocoa. Pour the mixture into the prepared moulds and bake for 8 minutes. When the outside is crisp, loosen with a knife and carefully turn onto serving plates. The centre should be soft and gorgeously gooey! Serve with crème fraîche or vanilla ice cream.

Dauphin de Giraud (France): A classic example of French dessert wine, where ‘Botrytis’ is allowed to affect the grapes before picking. Deeply golden, quince, pear and orange flavours mingle with spiced orange treacle. Clove and cinnamon lingers.

Flapper pie A prairie classic, just like grandmother’s! Crust:

The best apples for baking at this time of year will be the biggest ones you can find in the stores. apples brown sugar maple sugar cinnamon crème fraîche 1.

Dig into the top of the apple with a teaspoon until about half way down, then fill with brown sugar and maple syrup. Bake at 350°C for 15 minutes. Top with crème fraîche and a sprinkle with cinnamon.

Graham’s 20 Year Old Tawny Port (Portugal): Tawny ports are made from red grapes aged in wooden barrels, exposing them to gradual oxidation and evaporation. As a result, they gradually mellow to a golden-brown colour with a nutty flavour and a medium sweetness drawn from the oak casks. Like all good things, tawny ports will improve with age.

10 graham wafers, crushed 8 soda biscuits, crushed 1 tbsp. sugar 1/2 cup butter 1.

Combine graham wafers, soda biscuits, sugar and butter. Set aside 1 cup for topping. Pat crumbs in a 9-inch pie plate and bake at 350°C for 5 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Cream filling: 2 cups milk 1 tbsp. cornstarch 1/2 cup sugar 3 eggs, split yolks and whites 1/2 tbsp. vanilla extract 6 tbsp. sugar Pour milk into a heavy saucepan. Mix cornstarch and sugar. Stir into milk. Add slightly beaten egg yolk and vanilla. Cook, stirring constantly until the mixture boils and thickens. Pour into pie crust. Let cool. Beat egg whites, gradually adding sugar until peaks are formed. Pile gently onto cooled pie. Spread to edges, and swirl whites for an attractive finish. Sprinkle with remaining cracker crumbs and bake at 350°C until peaks are lightly browned.

eople have long had a fascination with the beauty and wonder of wild animals. Some people take their love of the wild into the living room, by adopting exotic animals to keep as pets. While a person’s reasons for keeping an exotic animal can be well meaning, there’s much to be considered before committing to owning one. Kim and Pam Shaheen, a couple in Regina who own a serval, an African cat, could not agree more. About eight years ago, Pam Shaheen was sitting at her computer surfing the Internet when she came across an article on the serval and was immediately intrigued. They discovered that unlike other African wild cats, the serval has a long history of human interaction: in Africa, these cats have been kept as pets for centuries, and there are even pictures of servals on the tombs of ancient Egyptian Pharaohs. After years of extensive research, Pam and her husband, Kim, made the decision to adopt a serval as a pet. This decision was not made lightly as there were several factors to take into account. An exotic animal is an expensive addition to the family. You need to factor in not only the purchase price but also the cost of upkeep; many exotic animals require a special diet. You also have to take into consideration the long-term commitment involved. While in the wild a serval will live six to 10 years, a domesticated serval can live up to 20 years (that is longer than the average marriage!). Many people adopt cats and dogs on a whim and when they realize it’s too much responsibility or are unhappy with the decision for other reasons, they take the pet to a shelter or give it away. Exotic pets are not always easy to re-home. Servals, for example, do not do well being away from their owners for very long; the Shaheens say they cannot go on trip longer than four to five days. “Having a serval is like having another child but one which will never grow up,” says Kim. Despite the adjustments the Shaheens had to make to allow their serval, named Jagger (“Like Mick, but without the lips!” jokes Kim), to have a comfortable life with them, they have no regrets about their decision. is the quality and reputation of the breeder. Doug Nelson, a breeder from Purrfound Cattery in British Columbia, flew out with Jagger, who was then seven weeks old, and stayed with the Shaheens for two nights to ease the transition. For those who have multiple pets, it’s important to research how exotic and domestic pets will adapt to one another. In the case of a serval, it’s recommended to have the domestic pets first. The Shaheen’s 12-yearold German Shepherd Sasha was quick to adopt Jagger as her own pup, and the two enjoy playing together. It’s crucial to look into the legalities of owning your preferred breed in the area where you live. The Shaheens had only had Jagger for eight months when they received a letter from the government in November of 2012 telling them that they had to remove him from the province. An anonymous complaint had been received from someone who feared the exotic animal was potentially dangerous. Having done his research, Kim knew this was not the case. Kim explains that while a serval is a very loyal pet, it would never defend its owner. Naturally timid, a serval will run and hide at the first sign of trouble. Many servals and savannahs (a cross between a serval and a domestic cat) reside with families in Saskatchewan.

The Shaheens, who were prepared to relocate in order to keep Jagger, are happy that they have not had to do so. Jagger continues to live with the couple in their Regina home and has been licensed as a pet by the city, a remarkably easy process for which the Shaheens commend the city. As a result of all the media attention, Jagger has become an ambassador cat for servals and regularly goes on visits to businesses, schools and nursing homes throughout the city and province. The Shaheens have taken Jagger out with them from the beginning; his first trip out was within 24 hours of his arrival to Metro Pet Mart. Kim enjoys teaching the public about the importance of responsible ownership and easing some of the misconceptions surrounding exotic pets. Kim and Pam look forward to spending many more happy years with Jagger. “Overall, Jagger is an absolutely outstanding pet,” declares Kim. Conferences are also a large market for OneStory as people are gathering material for social media from speakers and attendees before, during and after the event. past 34 years. Patrons of their restaurant have come to expect friendly service along with their tasty meals. But now the Georgacacos family has even more to offer — liquor delivery, to their customers’ tables, or right to their doors. “When we first thought of opening this store there was always the idea that we would offer liquor delivery, in and out of town,” Anna explains. “It’s important to me to do something that can stop people

from drinking and driving. We’re open to suggestions about what brands and lines people want us to carry, too.” For now, visitors and residents of the city can easily order by calling the restaurant line, and in the near future Anna hopes to have an online ordering system in place. “It would

The Void is clearly a labour of love, and one that extends not just to the store itself, or her staff of five, but also to every customer who walks through the door. “I feel very lucky to have this store in a place like Weyburn, where everyone is just so nice,” says Brown. “The people here, and in the surrounding community have just really supported us over the years, and we’ve learned how to be the kind of store that

RIDE appeals to them too. We’ve worked to figure out our clientele, and what they want.” Brown and her mother often work together to choose the product lines. Coming from different generations, yet having that same eye for what customers want and expect from The Void, has been one of the keys to the store’s success. “We look for things that are new and different, of course, but we often have specific people in mind as well. There are so many times when I’ve thought, ‘this is exactly the kind of purse that customer would buy’ or ‘this is definitely her style’,” explains Brown. Whenever possible, The Void also likes to showcase products by Canadian and local designers. New to the store’s jewellery section, and already proving to be very popular, are stunning earrings and necklaces from the sparkle ball collection of Hillberg & Berk, founded by Regina-based designer and entrepreneur Rachel Mielke. Brown says she’s thrilled to sell a popular Saskatchewan brand in her store. The Void has also become a marketplace for original work by Simple With A Twist. The canvas art pieces are created by Weyburn mother and daughter artists Heather van der Breggen and Rickee-Lee Webster. “People really love their work and it’s nice to find that special, hand-made piece for your home.” Some other popular items are vegan bags and purses from Montreal-based company, Matt & Nat, clothing and accessories by Desigual and a new addition — boots from Canadian footwear brand Taxi. Browns says selling one-of-a-kind and local items next to more well-known brands means that customers have a unique and interesting selection to choose from. One of her favourite things is seeing customers taking the time to browse, and commenting how they always discover something

cool and interesting in-store. “When people come in because they’ve seen their friend or mom or daughter with that special thing from our store, and that word-of-mouth has sent them to us, well that’s just a great feeling,” she says.

Prepare for Winter Driving

n the hectic lives most of us lead these days, things often slip our minds, especially if they only occur once a year. Preparing vehicles for winter can be one of these, as we usually don’t think about it until that first snowstorm hits. Unfortunately, that may be too late. The following information will help you prepare your vehicles for winter. Tires: Check the air pressure in each tire and confirm it matches what is listed on the information plate located on the driver’s door pillar — higher or lower will affect handling and tread wear. Check the tread wear and run actual winter tires if possible — their tread and rubber compound are designed specifically for winter and they give better performance at lower temperatures, starting at about five degrees and on down to about -30 degrees.

BaTTery: If three to five years old you may want a load test done. If not sealed, check the cell levels and strength, ensure terminal connections are clean and tight, and confirm battery is secure and not sitting loose. If you have a battery warmer confirm it is working — a battery warmer can help with those cold weather starts. Oil: Check for leaks and consider using lighter grade synthetic oil, which should help with cold winter starts as well as fuel mileage. Switching oils may be an issue with some engines, so be sure to ask your oil retailer before switching. engine cOOlanT: Check for leaks, as well as the level and strength. BlOck heaTer: Does it work? Circulating types lead to faster engine start and warm-up, which is easier on your engine.

WinDshielD Washer fluiD: Fill the washer reservoir with winter fluid so it is less likely to freeze. WinDshielD scraPer anD Brush: Keep one in the vehicle — when you use it, clean all windows as well as the top of the vehicle. Give special attention to the air intakes located at the bottom of the windshield as snow in them can cause your windows to frost up on the inside from your heater. I’m sure you have seen the person who, after a snowfall, is driving down the road with a very small hole scraped in the frost to peek through and half a foot of snow on top of the vehicle — this is a very dangerous practice. It takes very little time to properly clear the frost and snow from the windows, hood and roof of a vehicle. Poor visibility greatly increases your chances of being involved in a collision while the height and weight of snow on top of your vehicle will reduce your fuel mileage, which isn’t great in the winter to begin with. lOck De-icer: Always have some handy in your coat pocket — not in the vehicle where it won’t do much good if the locks are frozen. fuel: Try not to let your fuel level get below half a tank in the winter as low levels allow for condensation to form in the tank, which can lead to water and ice in your fuel as well as possible tank corrosion — these can then lead to poor

starting, poor fuel economy and potential vehicle breakdown on the road. You also want as full a tank as possible in the event you become stranded. Next, what do you need if you break down or become stuck? The following are some suggestions. Shovel, tow rope, flashlight, blankets or sleeping bags, reflective tape, energy food (water and granola bars), extra clothes (socks, heavy mitts, warm winter hat, boots, scarf and coveralls), traction material (sand, cat litter, traction plates), and candles with a can to burn them in as well as matches or lighter. For rear wheel drive vehicles place extra weight in the back for better traction. Bags of sand are good for this and can also be broken open and thrown under the tires if you become stuck. For pickups, sidewalk blocks are heavy and don’t interfere with most cargo. Whatever you use, be sure to secure the items so they don’t fly forward causing damage or injury in the event of a head-on collision or emergency braking. And what if you do breakdown or become stuck? Always stay with your vehicle — if the vehicle is on or by a road, it will be found. Hang reflective tape off your antenna. Run the engine for 10 minutes of

every hour, or every half hour in extreme cold. Turn on heater and dome light when engine is running. Beware of carbon monoxide — keep exhaust pipe clear of snow and open a downwind window slightly. Keep outside heater vents (below the windshield) clear. Do minor exercises and huddle together for warmth. Finally, as soon as you are faced with snow or freezing rain and their aftermath — slow down and increase your following distance. Reduce your speed in blizzards and blowing snow since you can’t see as well. Use extra caution if passing snowploughs — they usually pull over every few kilometers anyway so it might be safer to wait. Don’t use cruise control on slippery road surfaces as it can throw you out of control (this also applies to engine retarders). Check weather and highway reports before leaving. Choose well-travelled roads over those less frequented. Having four-wheel drive does not let you stop any faster so slow down and maintain a safe following distance. If you insist on driving like it’s summer, I hear Australia is nice this time of year. Joking aside, may you all have a healthy, happy winter wherever you may be, and please drive safely.

DISPELLING MISCONCEPTIONS

hen an industry practice such as hydraulic fracturing comes under public scrutiny, misconceptions are bound to arise. Engineers working within the industry are tired of the negative publicity and are looking for common sense discussion on the topic. They believe “fracking” represents innovation that brings a safer, more efficient and more environmentallyfriendly method of oil and gas extraction. Fracking, the process of creating fractures in rocks and rock formations by injecting fluid into cracks to force them open and allow more oil and gas to flow out into the wellbore, has a long history in Saskatchewan. The process was first used in the early 1950s, and by the mid-2000s, fracking of horizontal wells was underway, giving an increased viability to old and tired oil fields. Fracking has also been actively regulated in Saskatchewan for some time, protecting environmental standards and ensuring public safety. Current legislation pertaining to oil development includes The Oil and Gas Conservation Act, The Oil and Gas Conservation Regulations 2012, and the Saskatchewan Hydraulic Fracturing Fluids and Propping Agents Containment and Disposal Guidelines.

Cam Taylor, COO of Villanova 4 Oil Corporation, explains the corporate viewpoint for a properly regulated industry. “Oil development is very well regulated in places like Saskatchewan and Alberta with a long history of regulating drilling and fracturing. This regulatory framework allows the best safety practices learned over the years to become entrenched in the regulations. Any deviations from what is normal are extremely expensive for companies and usually result in a complete failure of the well, so companies themselves are very highly motivated to keep the entire frac product and energy contained within a thin zone way deep down.” Water usage threat posed by frac fluids is another outstanding concern. Ed Dancsok points out, “…in Saskatchewan the use of freshwater is closely regulated by the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority and Saskatchewan Water Corporation. Before an oil and gas company can use any freshwater in its development or productions operations, they must acquire an approval or permit from the aforementioned agencies.” The chemical additives, which make up less than one percent of total fluid volumes, are typical of those chemicals commonly used in household, cosmetic, medical and agricultural products.

A key element of the legislation regulates the design and drilling of wells to eliminate any movement of fluid coming back up from the wellbore. Ed Dancsok, assistant deputy minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas at Saskatchewan’s Ministry of the Economy, elaborates, “Making sure wells and drilling strictly follow regulatory specs eliminates the threats of seepage.” Steel casing and cement with triple redundancy ensures the environmental integrity of these wells.

Water usage is minor for this industry in Saskatchewan; in fact, oil and gas water usage in Saskatchewan is minute compared to other sectors. Agriculture uses the majority of freshwater at approximately 67 per cent, communities about 21 per cent, mining at three per cent, thermal power production at two per cent, and oil and gas at approximately one per cent. Many companies point out there is huge economic incentive to manage water appropriately and avoid any risks to surface and ground water.

Some jurisdictions allow storage of frac fluid in open pits, while Saskatchewan regulates that all flow-back fluids be captured in a fully closed loop system and disposed of through approved waste management facilities where the treated used fluid is either recycled or injected into deep subsurface formation to prevent surface and groundwater contamination.

Over the past 50 years, some 40,000 oil and gas wells have been hydraulically fractured in this province and no documented cases of impacts to freshwater have ever been recorded. Regulation and good industry practices are ongoing and evolving, helping to develop a successful provincial oil and gas sector.

Engelmann advises that the new generation of the Cayenne will be launched in four exciting models in the US which include: Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo, and the world premiere of the Cayenne S E-Hybrid, which is the first plug-in hybrid in the premium SUV segment. This model, together with the Panamera S E-Hybrid and the 918 Spyder, make Porsche the world’s only car manufacturer to offer three plug-in hybrid models. Another exciting feature on the new Cayenne is the dynamic 3.6 liter twin-turbo V6 engine for the S model. This new engine demonstrates both improved performance and fuel economy compared to previous models. Looking at the Cayenne’s new design can really get the adrenaline flowing as you notice the precision in the lines and the light refracting edges. Engelmann points out that the design of the front body, the front fenders and the hood are all completely new. The new Cayenne features Bi-Xenon™ headlights include four-point LED daytime running lights. The Cayenne Turbo offers high performance LED headlights with the Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) as a standard feature. When redesigning the Cayenne, power and torque were also boosted. This was achieved through modifications to the drivetrain. Active air flaps being used for the first time and are located behind the center air intake. Controlled by engine management; the air flaps are opened or closed according to the specific driving situation and cooling demands. The air flaps are able to adjust the air volume available for cooling. When they are closed they improve aerodynamics reducing air drag and improving fuel economy.

t’s easy to stay active during the warm summer months, but it’s not unusual to see people become sedentary in the winter in an attempt to stay out of the cold. However, residents of the community of Carnduff don’t allow winter to deter their activity. “Like any town in Saskatchewan, skating and curling rinks are the hub of the community in the winter,” says Tara Beck, Carnduff community development officer. According to recreation director, Shane Marsh, the Carnduff Centennial Arena opened October 1st for senior and Midget hockey, figure skating and CanSkate. As home to the Carnduff Junior and Senior Red Devils, the arena sees a high level of activity throughout the season. “This year we are thrilled to be hosting Hockey Day in Saskatchewan, January 16th to 18th,” adds Marsh. The community will host a full weekend of great hockey festivities, which will assist in raising money for upgrades to the arena. The event will take place in an outdoor rink in the Carnduff Memorial Park. Marsh adds that the weekend will wrap up on Sunday with a non-denominational church service and final game. For those who love to bonspiel, the Carnduff Curling Club kicks off its season in early November. The curling club offers town residents the opportunity to get out and enjoy the challenge of the sport. “Glow curling is held one Friday a month,” notes Beck, “it’s a great evening of fun for all ages.” She encourages those interested in participating to check out Facebook for event dates and further information. “We are also very fortunate to have a high level of outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, tobogganing and more,” states Beck. For those who prefer to stay indoors, Carnduff Bowl, located at 810 Railway Avenue, offers many evenings of fun for league members and public participants. Younger members of the community can also enjoy clubs such as archery, boxing, gymnastics and more.

Community service clubs such as the Lions Club and Royal Canadian Legion offer programs and functions throughout the year. They are an active part of the welcoming lifestyle offered by the friendly people of Carnduff. Seniors in Carnduff can enjoy gathering at the Friendship Centre for cards, dinners and other social events throughout the week. “The United Church women host ‘Market Days’ the first Friday of the month until Christmas,” remarks Beck. This is a great opportunity to meet with friends and neighbours to purchase produce, preserves, home baking and other fantastic treasures people of all ages will appreciate. The Christmas season starts off on Thursday, November 6th, with the Country Christmas Kick-Off, which is sponsored by the Carnduff and District Business Organization. “It’s a great time with late night shopping, sleigh rides, a free movie and lots more,” exclaims Beck. A great time for young and old alike, this event really jump-starts the holidays. Whether you have children going to school or not, who can pass up the Christmas concert put on by the children of the Carnduff Education Complex? For the movie lover, the Carnduff Community Theatre offers some great entertainment throughout the cold winter months too. For Carlyle residents and visitors, this is Ebenezer Scrooge, and he’s making his twelfth appearance at the town’s annual Dickens festival that celebrates the Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. “Lots of kids love to approach him,” says Dickens Festival organizer Shelley Slykhuis. “They will play bantering games — it’s quite fun to watch.” Scrooge will also enter stores during the festival, warning patrons to save their money.

Carlyle is the only community in Canada to hold the Dickens’ Festival, and people from all over North America — and even around the world — come to visit and find entertainment in a town transformed by early Victorian era Britain. “Last year, we had a woman travel from Prince Albert, Sask. who is British,” recalls Slykhuis. “She was impressed by our town’s dedication to authenticity.” Carlyle’s Main Street is lined with 35 specially-made English lanterns, and businesses are encouraged to hang red bows, green garlands and white lights along their shops.

During the weekend, men will don top hats and ladies will wear long skirts, capes, aprons and hats. Even kids get into the spirit and will turn into small street urchins, begging for money and bartering with Mister Scrooge. Festivities begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Residents and visitors will gather at Fezzwig’s Family Pub for free entertainment and a traditional lunch of stew and biscuits served by the local museum. Up next is the festival of trees, where locals donate a themed tree to be auctioned off for charity. The United Church then serves high tea from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. along with

petite sandwiches and scones. The church also provides traditional hats for tea and if the weather permits, free horse-drawn carriage rides are offered to high tea as well. For shopping, Slykhuis says 14 businesses are part of the Tiny Tim’s Tasting Tour. “Businesses participate by serving hot chocolate, cream puffs and mini-donuts to patrons on the tour.” However, Slykhuis recommends not filling up on too many desserts before dinner because that’s when the savoury treats appear. The Catholic Church, where you’ll find Slykhuis, serves clam chowder, corn chowder and chicken soup. The Fire Hall serves smoked turkey legs, while the Lion’s Club serves baked potatoes and the Youth Group provides smokies on a stick. “There’s also mini-donuts, chili in a bread bowl and shepherd’s pie,” says Slykhuis. After dinner, the Lighted Parade runs through town, and rumour has it, “Saskatoon cancelled their parade one year the same year we had 31 entries,” muses Slykhuis. Bah! Humbug! At night, it’s important not to miss the local drama club’s version of A Christmas Carol, which Slykhuis says sells out up to three weeks in advance. “It’s a musical comedy version of Dickens’ classic,” she says. “Last year it was A Texan Christmas Carol.” For those who are unable to make it on Saturday evening, there is a matinee performance of the show on Sunday as well. The Dickens Festival runs Dec. 5 to 7.

I have never walked out of King’s without a big smile on my face and my arms full of bags.” Owner Ken King has been in the retail business for 32 years. His success can be attributed to the extraordinary effort he and his staff put into not just meeting, but exceeding, the needs and expectations of their customers. If you can’t make it to the store, they will ship your order to you. “The return policy at King’s is awesome,” notes Moosomin based customer Michelle Fisk. “I have never had a problem with returning or exchanging items.” People come from near and far to explore King’s treasure trove of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and accessories. The 5,000 sq. ft. of combined retail space of King’s Department Store and 122 Main Ladies Boutique is filled with everchanging displays of top-quality clothing, footwear and accessories. They carry everything from Miss Me jeans and Bench casual wear to Joseph Ribkoff ladies wear and Katula Kiss bracelets, from Ten Tree t-shirts and Birkenstock sandals to The North Face winter outerwear and Roxy boots. They even have a great selection of Saskatchewan Roughriders’ gear. Both stores frequently have incredible sales,

including the 70 per cent off end-ofseason sale known as The Big One. Cheryl Hughes, from Balcarres, regularly brings hundreds of women to the area from Regina for daylong shopping excursions known as the Pink Bus Express. King’s Department Store is always on their list of stops. “I love seeing the expressions on the women’s faces when they first enter King’s Department Store. They are so impressed. They don’t expect a store like this in a community of this size,” says Hughes. “At King’s Department Store and 122 Main, there is something for everyone. They have a great selection that is so on trend. Ken definitely knows what people are looking for and brings it in. At the end of each excursion, I ask the women what the highlights of the trip were for them; they always say King’s Department Store. I know many of the women have driven back there to shop again.” Sheila Eskdale is a previous Weyburn resident currently retired in Whitebear Lake, and has been shopping at King’s for years. “King’s Department Store and 122 Main have good quality clothing at competitive prices. Luxurious Hot Tea Cocktail 1. Dip the rim of the glass in sugar

2. Mix 1 ounce orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier) & 1 ounce amaretto liqueur 3. Add a cinnamon stick 4. In a teapot, steep orange pekoe tea to your liking and pour desired amount over liqueur mixture. 5. Allow the cinnamon stick to soak for a minute or two to release flavour. If feeling especially festive, top with whipped cream. Enjoy!
