echnology is changing our approach to fitness, health and wellness by making it more individualized. Equipment is becoming increasingly sophisticated and can be calibrated more precisely to the needs of the individual. Digital apps measure everything from heart rate to miles run to nutrition, sleep and activity levels. According to Time, between December 2013 and June 2014, the use of fitness apps increased by 67 per cent compared to just 33 per cent for all other apps. Some of the most popular include RunKeeper, Fitbit, MyFitnessPal’s Calorie Counter and Run with Map My Run. The next step is smart clothing and fitness gear. Smartwatches are an early entry onto the scene. Since the first smartwatch was released in January 2013, several significant improvements have occurred, including the introduction of touchscreens. However, there is still much that needs to be done before this technology really catches on with the general public. Business Insider lists several drawbacks to current smartwatches, including limited functionality, the need for a compatible smartphone, price, style (chunky with small screens) and a short battery life. here in Estevan can you swing kettlebells, skip ropes, practice gymnastic movements on the rings, and flip tractor tires, all while getting cheered on by fellow workout enthusiasts? Welcome to CrossFit BlackRock, the city’s first CrossFit gym. Opened in December 2014 by Krista Schwentke and Brett Blackstock, CrossFit BlackRock is named for the coal, shale and oil the area is known for, and offers an exciting way to enhance your fitness and strength in a fun and supportive atmosphere. Founded in 2000, CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program aimed at broad

and inclusive functional movement. It has become massively popular in recent years, with more than 10,000 affiliated CrossFit gyms or “boxes” worldwide. Krista Schwentke, head coach at CrossFit BlackRock, began her CrossFit journey a year and a half ago while working as an exercise therapist. “I was looking for ways to exercise and stay fit, and fell in love with it,” says Krista, who has a Bachelor of Kinesiology. She soon became certified as a CrossFit Coach and began coaching the program herself. With no CrossFit gym in existence in Estevan but plenty of interest among the local community, Krista and partner Brett Blackstock leased a 4,660-sq.-ft. space and transformed it into a CrossFit

box, complete with reception area, change rooms, a sound system and brand-new equipment. “The goal is for our members to have fun, meet new people and have an amazing workout at the same time,” says Krista. CrossFit BlackRock offers both monthly and three-month memberships for ages 16 and up, which include access to all classes as well as open gym time. A different workout is featured every day, with coaches guiding clients through the program’s warm-ups and exercises. Classes are booked in 60-minute slots and are currently limited to 10 participants, ensuring each member receives one-on-one attention. “It’s like personal training within a group setting,”

says Krista. “Whether you want to lose weight, gain muscle or move better, you will,” she says. While CrossFit is known for its highintensity workouts, the exercises can be adapted to suit different skill levels. “Even if you aren’t competitive, you can get a good workout, go at your own pace, and only be pushed to comfortable limits,” says Krista. With a clinical background, Krista is able to effectively coach a wide variety of people, providing modifications on the spot to address different needs. “The workouts offer something new every time you walk into the gym,” says Krista. “It’s my job to make sure people are doing the exercises correctly.” Exclusive to CrossFit, and available at CrossFit BlackRock, are supplements from Progenex and JaktRX, developed to improve athletic performance and enhance recovery. Coaches will also provide members with information on diet and nutrition to complement their CrossFit program. Interested in discovering if CrossFit is for you? CrossFit BlackRock offers a free first class to anyone who wants to try it out. You can stop by the box, sign up by creating an account at https:// clients.mindbodyonline.com/classic/ home?studioid=202947 or download the Mind Body Connect smart phone app. “CrossFit is really fun and offers something different every day,” says Krista. “Most people usually get hooked by their first couple workouts — and it’s a great opportunity to improve your lifestyle in an environment that is naturally supportive.”

n a world where time and health are the most precious commodities, many people are seeking alternative ways to live fully, to maximize cherished downtime be proactive with wellness. Aromatherapy is widely talked about today but certainly not news in the world of alternative health. In fact, people have been using oils for more than 6,000 years. Essential oils can be diffused, inhaled, applied to the skin, incorporated in a massage therapy or taken internally for medicinal purposes. While there are many noteworthy essential oils and blends, here are the basics for anyone looking to delve into the world of oils.

1

Lavender is the first and most commonly used essential oil, often associated with luxurious linens and upscale spas. But, more than indulgent, lavender is known for its anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, pain-relieving, antihistamine, antitumor and antimicrobial properties. In fact, lavender oil is a natural healer of the skin and can be used to alleviate irritation from bee stings, sunburns and rashes.

2

Peppermint oil is a staple when it comes to digestive health and can be used to ease many conditions from heartburn to motion sickness. Feeling tired? Peppermint oil is invigorating. It can help reduce fever, improve oral health and improve digestion. This is the perfect oil to take when travelling.

Dedication to Healthy Living:

Wellness for Seniors

W

By Alyssa Rudyck

hile it is important to stay active, eat right and manage health risks at any age, these considerations can be of particular importance to seniors who, along dealing with increased difficultly maintaining an active lifestyle, may be more susceptible to illness and injury.

Plan ahead for what you can do to stay active in different seasons, and don’t forget to look for low-cost exercise programs that may be offered in the community. Popular physical activities for seniors may include swimming and aqua aerobics, yoga, walking with friends or on a treadmill, bowling, and even moderate biking or nature hikes.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle as we age is an essential component to chronic disease management, and can help reduce the risk of developing illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease. Along with promoting a healthy lifestyle, staying active can also help decrease the risk of injury, as muscle strengthening and active living helps to prevent falls, which are a big risk for seniors. In fact, falls are regarded as a prominent issue among individuals over the age of 65.

Maintaining a healthy diet is another great way to stay energized for activities throughout the day, promote strong bones and muscles, support a healthy immune system to help ward off colds and flus, and recover more quickly when illness or injury strikes. Enrich your life through a continued commitment to healthy living.

Audiologist Brings Healthy Hearing Home By Melanie Furlong Photos Doug Sully

H

earing-loss knows no boundaries. Both young and old can be affected for various reasons. That’s why taking charge of your ear health, and having regular ear examinations, is so important. Estevan’s only audiologist, Jacquie Mvula, opened the doors of her bright new clinic, Sun Country Hearing Ltd. on Kensington Avenue, this past October. She sees clients aged five and up for testing, cerumen removal and fitting hearing aids. Mvula, who has a master’s degree in audiology and another clinic in Alberta,

16

FineLifestyles

has brought the most modern and up-todate technology to town. One of her most impressive pieces is the video otoscopy, which allows her and her clients to see inside the ear. One woman, whose daughter claimed she’d put a jewelry bead in her ear five years ago, was finally able to see the elusive bead on screen. “They took the photo back to their family doctor and were sent to the ear, nose and throat specialist who removed it,” says Mvula. “The video otoscopy is an excellent tool because it gives us the entire picture of what’s going on inside the ear.”

Being tested to find a baseline for your normal hearing level is important for future reference. The baseline allows the audiologist to measure any changes and monitor how much hearing is lost over time. For those who work in noisy industrial environments, industrial testing every two years is crucial. “We can tell if they are wearing proper ear protection or if they need better protection,” says Mvula. “These tests also protect both the employee and employer from future disputes.”

If any middle ear or other issues are detected during a test, Mvula refers clients back to their family physicians or ear, nose and throat specialists. Getting to know her clients and helping them resolve their hearing problems is very fulfilling for Mvula. “People should take care of their ears just like their eyes. Hearing-loss can be socially isolating,” she says. “And it can be mistaken for other problems.” One client’s family was convinced he was suffering from dementia, when in fact he’d lost some of his hearing. Mvula fitted him with hearing aids and he took a wonderful vacation shortly afterwards with his family. “He heard the ocean and his family communicated with him,” she says. “It was life-changing for them all.” Hearing-loss can be stressful for not only the person it’s happening to, but also for those around them. Mvula fitted a young man in his 30s with hearing aids recently. “He said his friends say a joke’s not funny the second time and he was tired of missing out on good times,” she says. Mvula is especially happy to be bringing her services, and her young family, back to Estevan since it is her hometown. “We’re happy to be back near family and we’re planning to stay,” she says. Craft Beer: DELICIOUS BREWS FOR THE WINTER

By Apolline Lucyk

Winter is the time to bundle up and drink thick, dark brews paired with warm, hearty dishes. Matt Braun and Greg Hanwell, beer aficionados from Beer Bros. Gastropub & Deli, know which beers will warm us up and brace us best for the frosty winds of the prairies.

18

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

A

s the days get colder, darker and shorter, Braun and Hanwell notice people tend to reach for the darker, heavier beers, as the deeper flavours pair well with winter dishes like stews and roasts; the heavier nature of the beers also helps brace you for the cold. “People become accustomed to seasonal trends in culinary terms,” says Hanwell, “and what we’re seeing is that same trend in beers. People are looking for regional beers, and seasonal beers, looking for what goes best with what seasons and foods.” Beers of choice for the winter are certainly the darker, stronger brews.

STOUT

Braun says the possibilities with beer are endless. “Craft breweries are doing some great experimenting these days. There’s so much variety you can do with flavours.” As craft beer continues to grow in popularity, breweries have been able to experiment more and more with bolder flavours, coming up with some really fantastic brews. “In the winter, we see a lot of nutmeg, cinnamon, star anise,” says Braun, “lots of porters, stouts and strong Belgian ales.

Traditional English stouts rely mainly on the roasted grain to provide the bitterness and dry finish, and therefore don’t have a very strong hops presence; North American craft-brewed stouts tend to have a bolder, stronger hops presence.

PORTER Porter is one of the oldest and most important styles of beer around the world, especially for Great Britain. Born in London in the 1700s, Porter has travelled the world, being brewed early on in America, Australia, the Baltic countries and India, to name a few. Porters can have many different flavours, depending on adapted brewing processes and the addition of diverse flavours. Porters are aromatic beers with notes of chocolate and hints of coffee, and sometimes buttery caramel and nuts. They often have a faint smokiness and a dry finish. Porter has become one of craft beer’s most prominent styles, and is brewed widely all over the world. There are some great porters from craft breweries right here in Canada.

Stout is a descendent of Porter. The term stout was first used in England in the 1700s to describe the high-alcohol, bolder-flavoured version of any beer style. However, over time it became closely associated with porters. Stout porter became the most popular stout variety, and eventually stout porters became referred to simply as stouts. Stouts are warm-fermented ales distinguishable through their dark colour and a deep, roasted flavour, reminiscent of dark chocolate and coffee. “Stouts are good when the weather’s cold,” comments Braun. “They’re robust. They warm you.”

BELGIAN DUBBEL & DARK ALE Traditionally brewed in Belgian monasteries, and often still brewed in them today, the Belgian dubbel is a dark ale of medium-to-high strength. Westmalle Abbey, a monastery in northern Belgium, just east of Antwerp, is credited for developing the dubbel and tripel styles of beer. Belgian dubbels gain much of their colour from a highly caramelized version of a sugar syrup, rather than the roasted malts which are used in British and German brown beers. In place of the roasted coffee or chocolate flavours of stouts and porters, dubbels have a distinctive herbal, fruit and phenol notes, and an aromatic reminiscent of burnt sugar and raisins. Although dubbels are dry by definition, they can have a slightly sweeter flavour, as they usually don’t carry so much hoppy bitterness. “The sky’s the limit with beer,” says Braun. “And people are starting to experiment. We’re seeing more and more of the rotational, seasonal beers selling faster.” Now is a perfect time to enjoy a delicious dark brew.

COVER STORY

The Love of Sport

LIVES ON By Kim Mannix Vermette

In Memory of

Len Williams

T

he name Len Williams is well-known in Weyburn. The title Coach Williams is even more recognized, not just in Weyburn, but across Saskatchewan, thanks to a career spent nurturing the skills of hundreds of athletes. Williams died of cancer last July, and though he’d already retired from his profession, teaching, and his passion, coaching, the loss made a huge impact on his family, friends and the community. It’s telling that in Williams’ obituary, his family named “every man and woman Len coached” as honourary pallbearers. “My dad loved to be around people, so it’s easy to see how coaching became his life,” says William’s daughter, Erica. “In some ways all the kids he coached were like family.” Herself an accomplished athlete who played hockey for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, Erica says one of her dad’s special talents was in knowing how to teach the fundamentals that help athletes excel. Erica started early with hockey, on the backyard rinks Williams would build every winter for her and her three brothers.

But she also benefited from her dad’s keen ability to teach the finer points of basketball, cross-country running and just about any other sport a prairie kid can play.

hometown, Jacquie fights to hold back tears. “It chokes me up to talk about it, but I’m happy too, to say we had a huge outpouring of support,” she says.

The love of sport runs in the Williams’ blood. Len’s brother, Dave “Tiger” Williams is beloved as an NHL legend, and playing and working hard were values the Williams brothers and their six other siblings learned early in life.

Just days after William’s cancer diagnosis, Jacquie suffered a serious stroke. Friends and neighbours didn’t hesitate to help where they could, doing yard work, bringing meals and sitting with Len to keep him company. “To me it was unbelievable, but it didn’t surprise Len. He knew that’s just what people in Weyburn are like.”

Williams’ wife, Jacquie, says her husband definitely had a flair for coaching, and a very analytical mind that he used to study the finer points of the sports he loved. But she says the real reason for his success was his drive. “It wouldn’t have mattered if Len had been a firefighter or a ditch digger instead of a coach — he always would’ve worked hard to do his best.” And even with the many trophies his teams won, and the accolades he amassed throughout the years, Jacquie says he was never one to rest on past successes. He’d smile, celebrate and move on to the next challenge. When asked about the impact she thinks her husband made on their

Before his death, Williams and his family founded the Len Williams Coaching Legacy Fund. The grants, which will be available through Sask Sport beginning in 2018, will be divided amongst all the province’s high school districts, with an additional portion available to coaches in the Weyburn area. “Of course Len was a big believer in the importance of minor sports, and having coaches get the training they need to be their best, so this was important to him,” says Jacquie.

Weyburn Red Wings

AN UNFORGETTABLE GAME By Tonya Lambert

H

e scores!” The announcer’s words were drowned out by the tremendous roar that erupted in the Colosseum. The Weyburn Red Wings had done the unthinkable – they defeated four regional champion teams to capture the Royal Bank Cup and become the 2005 National Junior A Champions. “

No one expected the team to make it to the final game, let alone win it. Losing out to the Humboldt Broncos in the first round of playoffs two months earlier, the team had gone home to prepare to host the big tournament. “Being the underdogs was a great motivator,” says 2005 team captain

22

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

Ryan Kuntz. “The team had struggled all season,” notes assistant coach Darcy Pindus, “but the extra pressure of hosting the Cup did the trick.” The Red Wings lost only one game during the tournament – the first game against the Portage Terriers went into overtime before the Terriers took the game at 3-2. After that, the Red Wings coasted from win to win on an unstoppable drive to victory...and their fans were with them every step of the way. “The whole community came together for the tournament. Businesses painted their windows red,” recalls current president,

Larry Tribiger. “The rink was packed. The Red Wings games were sold out. The atmosphere in the whole city was electric.” 2,152 fans were in the Colosseum watching as Rick Wood scored the winning goal to defeat the Camrose Kodiaks 3-2 with only 16 seconds left in the game. It is a game that will never be forgotten. On Feb. 6, 2015, the Red Wings will play the Nipawin Hawks in a 10th Anniversary game, commemorating their historic win. The players’ third jerseys, with commemorative patches, will be auctioned off at intermission. Come and enjoy a fun-filled evening!

K

i tc h e n and b a t h ro o m renovations are some of the most valuable and rewarding projects homeowners choose to take on. These renovations also have a plethora of choices that become permanent fixtures in a home and are used for decades. Sinks are one of the fixtures that get the most wear and tear in a home. Whether in a bathroom or kitchen, a sink can be much more than a vessel for water. Since its creation in the early 1900s stainless steel has been a favoured choice for all types of production due to its durability and beauty. In the 1930s the material finally began to be used in domestic settings rather than heavy enamelled cast iron or porcelain. Now, steel lends itself to both traditional and ultra modern looks. Those looking for a more vintage feel are still opting for cast iron or fireclay. Modern fabrication techniques have opened up new materials like composite granite which does not show marks or scratches as stainless does. For an airy look in the bathroom try glass vessel sinks which add style and visual space to a room. Natural stone like soapstone, concrete for an industrial look, even seamlessly integrated solid surface sinks like quartz are making the rounds in modern kitchens and baths setting trends of their own. In the world of sinks mounting and style is key. Under-mount sinks are gaining popularity for their modern look and easy counter cleaning, though over-mount are easier to change and more affordable. The traditional look of an apron front or farm sink creates a unique focal point in any kitchen and is often a must-have. The

fixture has been brought into the modern era through use of colour, materials and even texture. Vessel sinks are still very popular in the bath; the raised basin emits a spa feel to any bath. Neo-Metro’s Ebb Concept sink provides an ultra modern feel by combining a stainless steel sink with backlit resin in a wide variety of colours combining a nightlight and chromatheraphy effects. Whether in the kitchen or bath, bigger is better for sinks. Long trough sinks are very popular for en suites and deep sinks are key for soaking dishes from a special dinner. Though a double sink has become popular over the years, you don’t really need one unless you do a lot of hand washing; a smaller, secondary separate sink in a kitchen island is often more useful for families cooking as a team. As sinks change so too do faucets. As the jewellery of a room handles and faucets play a strong role in defining personal style in a space whether it is traditional or sleek modern. Vessel and trough sinks often call for wall mounted fixtures which free up valuable counter space and ensure easier cleaning. Technology also plays a part in the new faucet with touch start and motion sense features so dirty hands do not become dirty handles. This technology limits how much time is allocated to cleaning as well as avoids cross contamination. Faucets now even come with antimicrobial innovations to ensure a healthier home for everyone. When it comes to the more permanent fixtures in your home it’s important to think longterm. This is an object you will be using everyday so make sure it works for your lifestyle and is as unique as you.

SAFETY FEATURE

Safety is

NO ACCIDENT Photography by Greg Huszar Photography, courtesy of WorkSafe Saskatchewan

“A bruise is just a badge that you had fun.” “S&%t happens.” “Shake it off.”

T

hese used to be common sayings in Saskatchewan. WorkSafe and Safe Saskatchewan believe that Mission: Zero — the call to achieve zero injuries at home, at work and at play — is changing that.

In December 2013, 88 per cent of people surveyed by WorkSafe said they believe injuries are preventable. Unfortunately, believing isn’t enough. Our injury and fatality rates at work, at home, and on our highways are still among the worst in Canada. “Believing that injuries are predictable and preventable is the first step,” says Phil Germain, vice president of prevention for the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board. “We need to turn those beliefs into action.”

30

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn Estevan / Weyburn

Committing to safety makes a difference. In 2010, WorkSafe Saskatchewan and Safe Saskatchewan launched the Health and Safety Leadership Charter. There are now 382 signatory companies. The injury rates of these companies began dropping in 2010 and continues to drop at a faster rate than the rest of the province. The safety practices of these companies can be applied anywhere. Making it a habit to watch for risks and remove hazards prevents injuries. Gord Moker, CEO of Safe Saskatchewan, says, “Imagine if everyone became just a little more diligent about safety. It would have a huge impact on our province. Ask yourself, ‘What can I do today to keep myself, my family or my child from getting hurt?’

Chad Johnstone’s

LASTING LEGACY By Tonya Lambert

C

had Johnstone was a helpful, hard-working, hands-on kind of guy. He could always be found fixing or building something, often for someone else. He was the person everyone called when they needed help, whether it was branding cattle, fixing a fence or moving bleachers. On Nov. 19, 2014, the community and all who knew him suffered a great loss — Chad passed away in a tragic accident. Raised on the family farm near Yellow Grass, Chad grew up surrounded by horses, developing a deep love for them at a young age. Upon completing high school, he moved to Olds, Alta., where he studied to be a farrier, graduating at the top of his class. Returning home, Chad traveled throughout southeast Saskatchewan shoeing horses and trimming hooves, his knowledge of the animals second to none. So it was no surprise that when he was asked to help prepare the exhibition grounds for the chuckwagon races at the annual fair he quickly agreed and continued to do so every year thereafter. When Chad was elected President of the Weyburn Agricultural Society in December 2013, he stepped up to the plate determined to do his very best to revitalize the organization by bringing new ideas and people to the group. Never one to shy away from hard work, Chad embraced his new role as president, putting in many long hours behind-the-scenes coming up with ideas for new activities, working to improve

the grounds, participating in the club’s many events and encouraging others to get involved. With support from other members of the Ag Society and Rodeo Committee, Chad accomplished a great deal in his year as president. A new fence was built around the perimeter of the grounds, new bleachers doubled the seating area in the cattle barn, more electrified campsites were set up, the rodeo arena was improved through adding sand and grooming, and the rodeo arena and curling rink were used for more events. An innovative thinker, Chad led the Ag Society in new directions. He was instrumental in getting the Society involved with the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign and Adopta-Family for Christmas. Attending the FestivAle in Regina last year with wife Marla Holdstock, Chad was inspired to have the Ag Society develop its own food and beer festival; Weyburn’s first Flavours of Fall will be held in October 2015. He also encouraged others to think outside the box, supporting the idea of a Truck and Tractor Pull in September 2015. He intended to put any money raised from these two events towards new equipment and improved facilities. “As president, Chad’s energy and ideas were like a breath of fresh air. Getting the Ag Society’s name out into the community so people understand who we are and what we do was a priority for Chad,” says Tyler Metheral. “He wanted people to know that you don’t need to be a farmer or rancher to be involved in the

Ag Society.” The Weyburn Agricultural Society will be dedicating 2015 to Chad’s memory and will work to see that all his plans for the year come to fruition. If anyone is interested in helping out, they should contact the Ag Society. Donations are also being accepted in Chad’s memory. He will be deeply missed. Emergency Scene Management

Cliff Reaney CR Safety Ltd. 64 3rd Street NE, Weyburn 306.861.9966 creaney@sasktel.net crsafetyltd.ca

I

magine the following scenarios: Driving along you come upon a crashed vehicle with someone inside; a co-worker in pain cries out for help; you open the garage door and find your spouse unconscious, and the vehicle running — would you know what to do in these circumstances? St. John Ambulance First Aid offers four steps, called Emergency Scene Management, which must be followed. SCENE SURVEY First, take charge of the scene and call for help. Identify any hazards and establish it is safe for you to approach the casualty. Try to

40

FineLifestyles

Estevan/Weyburn

determine what happened and tell the casualty not to move. Protect yourself first; if in trying to reach them or remove them from danger you are likely to become injured yourself or die, you must stop until the area can be made safe. Identify yourself and get permission from them to help. If they are suffering from serious injury, illness or are unresponsive call 9-1-1 at once.

the ambulance is delayed more than 20 minutes or you are going to transport the casualty. It is only to be done after all life threatening conditions have been successfully addressed. Another, much more detailed, head-to-toe examination is performed looking for fractures, internal or external bleeding, other medical conditions and medical alert jewellery or tattoos. First aid is then performed as required.

PRIMARY SURVEY Determine if the casualty’s airway is open, they are breathing effectively and whether or not they have a pulse. Perform a quick headto-toe examination to determine there are no other life threatening conditions such as severe bleeding or shock. Life threatening conditions must be attended to immediately using CPR and first aid. If Emergency Medical Services (EMS), a first aid kit and AED machine have not been sent for yet, do so now! If possible, have someone call while you care for the casualty. Have them tell 9-1-1 where you are located, the suspected injuries or illness and the first aid being performed. If they must leave to call, ask them if they understand what you have told them and tell them to come back when finished.

ONGOING CARE While waiting for EMS, cover the casualty to keep them warm and combat shock. Have the casualty resting in a comfortable position, depending on their injuries and condition. Reassure them, even if they are unresponsive. Continue monitoring airway, breathing and circulation for any changes and be prepared for further first aid or CPR as required. Record your findings and the first aid performed to share with EMS when they arrive.

SECONDARY SURVEY This step follows if other injuries have been found,

This is only a small portion of what can be learned in a first aid course and even it would be covered in much more detail. If you have never had a first aid course, or if it has been several years since the last one, consider signing up. It is something you hope to never have to use, but can be the difference between life and death when needed.

Effective Business Marketing and Advertising

W

hile it is important for business owners to understand what they can do for their customers, it is even more important for customers to know what businesses can do for them. With competition and options in the marketplace, businesses need to find a way to stand out.

Let’s start with your business cards. As soon as your business has opened its doors, or maybe even before that, you will need a card to hand out that includes your contact information, location and business name, and likely a couple of lines explaining the services you offer. You will also want to include a logo, if you have one, to brand your company name. Many of your employees will also need to have cards, as they will promote your business every time they distribute them. Get your cards out everywhere you can, they will bring business to your door. Brochures are also an effective way to promote your business. They allow you to get a lot of information listed about what you can do to help customers succeed. Brochures, or any information sheet, can include pictures of items you sell or services you offer. A single sheet or a folded brochure can serve the same purpose depending on how much information you need to list. From low cost single sheets of black text on white paper to full colour on high-gloss paper, the options you have can vary depending on your budget. In-store signage, posters and banners are items you need to consider. You don’t want to assume the customer

understands every part of your business as well as you do. Generally, people do not read the fine print. So, with posters and banners it’s best to not make them too busy with information, but to get the main items out for customers to see. Pictures and bullet points will have the best results with this type of promotion. Posters with sale prices or special offers for short-term use can be effective if used in locations where they stand out. Banners, whether wall-mounted or rollup, can be used in-store or at trade shows where you want exposure to a broad range of clientele. With roll-up banners you don’t need a special place to display them, but can relocate them to different areas quickly and easily. More than one banner may be necessary if you have several display situations or a large trade show display. Never forget, your office stationery is front and centre in displaying your business. Every time you give out an invoice, pay a bill or send a statement in an envelope, you have the opportunity to put your name in front of the customer. For help with any of these items, the staff at Southern Printers will be more than happy to help you out.

Managing Your Money Hire an Expert or Go it Alone? By Tobie Hainstock

Whether it’s buying a home, building a retirement nest egg or saving for our children’s education, we all have financial goals of some sort. With so many advisors in the industry, isn’t it simpler to look after your financial investments yourself? How do you know who is trustworthy? Whose advice should you follow?

N

o matter what you are doing, when you have a job that needs to be done, hiring a professional is the best way to ensure a satisfactory outcome. When managing your finances, you may have some ideas of what types of products you wish to purchase or what level of risk you are most comfortable with, but a financial advisor has the expertise to advise you of trends and market fluctuations. When it comes to getting your investment

42

FineLifestyles

portfolio started, it’s always best to look for a financial planner with Certified Financial Planner (CFP) or Certified Investment Manager (CIM) designations. With years of training and education behind him/her, your financial advisor is the person you can rely on to help you discover the amount of risk you can endure. A financial planner will analyze each individual client’s situation and customize a portfolio that will manage debt as well as investment. An advisor will also help

with other issues, such as estate taxations and business or property ownerships. Once you have your investments set up, the best thing to do is relax and let your portfolio manager look after everything. Don’t be fooled by the romantic notion that you will buy a fund and it will split, making you a fortune. Strong, long-term investments typically give back a 10 per cent return for your money. Remember, it’s never too late to get started on your financial plan.

ow often has this happened to you: you’ve picked up a business card from your financial advisor’s office only to find what seemed like half the alphabet strewn behind their name? As professionals, we are proud of our accomplishments and want to make our clients aware of our qualifications. But what do those letters really mean? Are they just for show? Well, in most instances, these letters identify a very distinct skill set that your advisor has worked countless hours to achieve. However, herein lies the issue for most investors – how to determine whether the advisor is qualified to manage their financial affairs. Here are a few examples of designations that you may want to ask your advisor about or look for next time you meet with them.

CFP® certification is the most widely recognized financial planning designation in Canada and is considered the gold standard for the profession, representing the highest level of competence, ethics and practice. A common path to obtain this designation requires candidates to complete several courses over a duration of four or more years in which the candidates will be challenged with a total of seven exams, culminating with a comprehensive six hour final examination. To achieve this distinction requires an excess of 1,000 hours of study. FELLOW OF CANADIAN SECURITIES INSTITUTE (FCSI®)

Having achieved these and other designations, the Financial Advisors at Weyburn Credit Union’s Wealth Management Center exude the determination to commit to ongoing education. Collectively the Wealth Management department has dedicated over 10,000 hours to industry focused study, demanding a tremendous evening and weekend education commitment. TOWN FEATURE

MACOUN

MIDALE

HALBRITE

Located less than 30 kilometres northwest of Estevan, Macoun is a small hearty town. Once just a point on the Canadian Pacific Transcontinental Railway, Macoun had its first settlers around the turn of the century. Once a larger village than Estevan, Macoun had many fires, which has caused many locals to move.

Settled just over 100 years ago, and with a population of just over 550 residents, the town of Midale is largely made up of those working in the grain or oil industries.

With a population of approximately 120, Halbrite is the type of community where everyone knows everyone. “There’s not a person in this community I don’t trust,” comments Mayor Dwayne Carlson. “We are in the process of rebuilding our recreation board and getting the arena refurbished for residents to use for events.”

The town currently has a goal of restoring the town hall, which was built in the 1920s. Karolin Martin, president of the Town Hall Committee, says she is very impressed with the community support for the events the committee is organizing to raise funds for the restoration.

True to the town motto, ‘Where oil, grain and recreation meet,’ Midale is a quintessential Saskatchewan town with a love for hockey and curling and a deep pride in its history. “The Harry O Arena and Civic Centre are the hub of our community in the winter,” says Linda Dugan, town administrator. The Midale Mustangs, a Saskatchewan Big 6 team, and four other teams call the arena home.

Parents have the peace of mind of raising their children in a friendly smalltown environment and children get the freedom they love. In the heart of the Southeast (just 20 minutes from Weyburn and 40 from Estevan), the village continues to grow while retaining its charming community warmth.

Keeping Small Communities Moving

I

f anyone understands the importance of community, it’s the Co-op, which has been a part of Macoun for 75 years. Founded in 1939, the business has helped the community grow and thrive. In 2015, Macoun Co-op will be further expanding their fuel hauling fleet to better serve their ever-growing fuel customers. “We always pride ourselves on great customer service. We are a hub of the community,” says retail manager Debbie DeBruyne. “Our business is a place people can rely on to stay in the community

and help make it stronger.” With this community-focused dedication Macoun Co-op’s fuel department is adding a new triple axle fuel truck to their line up. This five compartment 23,500 litre fuel hauler will mean faster, better service for their clients. With a total of almost six million litres distributed last year, the majority of which was to local farmers, it’s safe to say Macoun Co-op keeps local farms moving everyday. Macoun Co-op is the reliable one-stopshop where one can get their mail, groceries, hardware, propane and fuel.

The store is even willing to make special orders for their valued customers. With their recent expansion, the business is gearing up to better serve their treasured community, a place where customers are friends and neighbours. “We’re very proud of our little Co-op and we give back to the community in any way we can,” says DeBruyne. From Oilfields to Orphanages: How PAR ContRACting gives BACk By Courtney Tait

T

his fall, a family in Weyburn moved into a brand new home, built by volunteers with Habitat for Humanity — an organization that helps people all over the world become homeowners. Members of the volunteer building and fundraising teams included the owners and staff of PAR Contracting, a Halbrite company that provides vegetation control and other services to Saskatchewan’s oilfield industry. Owners Ron and Patty Evans believe volunteer work and community engagement is an important part of being business owners and good neighbours. “We like helping people,” says Ron. “We are blessed with a good business, so we like to bless others and pay it forward.” Started eight years ago, PAR Contracting is one of the biggest vegetation control providers in the province, serving 21 oilfield companies throughout southeast Saskatchewan. Along with spraying, mowing and other vegetation control, PAR provides ABOVE Ron and Patty Evans, owners of PAR Contracting with the Dunn Family, recipients of Weyburn’s first Habitat for Humanity home.

snowblowing and maintenance services. “We find the needs of our customers and act as fast as we can to get the job done,” says Ron. PAR Contracting was one of five finalists at the 2014 ABEX Awards, which honour outstanding achievements in business excellence. PAR was in the running for Business of the Year as well as community involvement. “It was an honour to be a finalist,” says Ron. Earlier this year, PAR Contracting received the Business of the Year Award at the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce Weybex Awards, as well as the Community Involvement Award. Along with Habitat for Humanity, PAR Contracting supports other organizations both locally and internationally. They have donated, fundraised and helped with building repairs at The Family Place, a community centre in Weyburn that provides resources and programs to help build strong families. Ron is on the board of the Souls Harbour RESCUE Mission in Regina, which aids people living with poverty and addictions. Ron and Patty’s volunteer work expands even beyond the local community. They visit an orphanage in Mexico, helping with painting, cooking and any other assistance needed. They also support Operation Christmas Child, which donates Christmas gifts to children in need around the world. Throughout the year, PAR Contracting sponsors minor sports teams in southeast Saskatchewan. They have begun fundraising for a second Habitat For Humanity home in Weyburn, and Ron says PAR staff will donate their time to building this one as well. The combination of community involvement and high quality of work they provide to the oil industry makes PAR Contracting an exceptional Saskatchewan business. Ron says the staff, which consists of a 30-member team in the summer and 11 members in the winter, is what makes the company. “Our business comes to us by referral,” says Ron. “Our staff are dedicated and experienced, as they keep coming back every year. Customers have told us the business sells itself through its quality of work.” Through their volunteer work, Ron and Patty hope to inspire others to give back to their community. “It’s important to help the people next door,” says Ron. ast spring, cousins Megan Martinson and Tr i c i a Wilgenbusch took a shopping trip that would change their lives. While visiting one of their favourite stores, the Craft Shack — a furniture and home decor shop owned by Lori and Melvin Hnidey for 18 years — they learned the business was for sale. The store’s original location was on the Hnidey’s farm, and its welcoming atmosphere and beautiful handcrafted pieces had garnered a loyal clientele, which included Megan and

Tricia. That very day, the ladies decided they would become the new owners. This fall, the first-time business owners opened Country & Co. Home Décor Ltd. in Weyburn — a 2,400 sq. ft. store with a different name and location, but much of the same country rustic-style items loved by customers of the Craft Shack. The women have created an atmosphere that draws people in for the experience, with complimentary coffee and tea, friendly service and items displayed in a way that feels more like a home than a store.

“The Craft Shack was such a unique experience for us and we want to create that for our customers,” says Tricia. “Country & Co. is the kind of store people stop at not just because they need to pick something up, but because they look forward to the experience. Customers say the store has the warm and cozy feeling of home.” Country & Co. features rustic and modern accent furniture such as tables, cupboards, benches and chairs. Many of the items are handcrafted or even refurbished to create new pieces with a

sense of history. “People like the unique aspect of the pieces,” says Megan. “They like knowing they own something nobody else has and that the piece has a history.” Along with furniture, the store features home accessories such as clocks, candles, lanterns, reed diffusers and throw pillows. Wall art includes paintings, pictures and wood boards decorated with quotes. Interested in refinishing furniture at home? Country & Co. is one of only two suppliers in the province to sell CeCe Caldwell’s Paints, a water-based nontoxic brand of clay chalk paint known for its easy application, with no sanding or other preparation required. As an excellent place for gift shopping, Country & Co. provides a wish list program. Customers can have favourite items recorded on their personal wish list, and when a gift-giving occasion arises, friends or family members may choose to give something from the list. The process simplifies shopping and ensures the gift is something they will truly appreciate. Megan and Tricia plan to feature different items at Country & Co. each season, holding open house events to welcome customers and show new stock. You can follow the store’s Facebook page to keep notified of open houses and new products year round. Whether you were a loyal customer of the Craft Shack or simply enjoy unique furniture and home decor, Megan and Tricia welcome you to experience Country & Co. “We look forward to sharing our dream come true with everyone who visits,” say the ladies. Adderley opened Refresh Wellness Bar & Bistro in 2012, with a vision for a healthier community. She couldn’t have asked for a better location to promote wellness with the Souris River and waterfront walking path (part of the Tatagwa Parkway) just outside the front door. Adderley is a cancer survivor and credits her faith, healthy lifestyle and positive outlook for her well-being. She pursued her dream to open Weyburn’s first juice/smoothie bar and in less than a year, Refresh Wellness Bar & Bistro has become a popular meeting spot. She is also an enthusiastic distributor for JuicePlus+® and recently added a JuicePlus+® ‘Tower Garden’ to the bistro – an indoor/outdoor vertical aeroponic gardening system to grow her own fresh herbs, greens and vegetables. Adderley is very excited to be able to harvest her own organic produce for soups, crepinos, smoothies and salads. In the summer, she also has an on-site garden and a large deck, which offers a great place to sit alone or visit with friends while enjoying the great outdoors. Adderley has many regular customers from Weyburn and area, but also has numerous world-wide travellers stopping in. “I feel so blessed...I just love coming to work! I never know who will pop by,” she says. “Everyone who comes here enjoys the warm and inviting, positive atmosphere and the friendly staff. People are always commenting on how wonderful this place is and how it feels just like home! They love the smell of our homemade soups simmering on the stove, our fresh baking and of course our amazing coffee, which has earned the distinction of being the best coffee in Weyburn.” The business is locally owned and wheelchair accessible with plenty of parking — even puppy parking! If you are looking for a relaxing place to refresh and rejuvenate, visit with friends, have a healthy lunch (dine in or takeout), sit or read (as long as you like), you will want to visit Refresh Wellness Bar & Bistro. n our role as a community builder we are very fortunate to be able to return a portion of our profits back into our community through sponsorship of local events and projects. Our support ranges from supporting groups on our community events deck to some of the recent

larger projects in our community, such as Habitat For Humanity, Tommy Douglas Performing Arts Center, Triple C Centre, Pioneer Women commemorative statue and the Weyburn & District Hospital Foundation. The total donation for these projects is in excess of $180,000.

Tommy Douglas Performing Arts Centre is a unique facility and an intimate venue for staged performances. It's a preserved pioneer Baptist Church designated by the City of Weyburn as a historical municipal building. "The Centre’s Board is appreciative of the financial assistance received from Prairie Sky Co-op over the years, including most recently the re-roofing project to preserve our heritage," Connie Nightingale, president.

"We would like to express our extreme gratitude to Prairie Sky Co-op for their generous donation to the Triple Centre project. It is only with community builders like yourselves that visions like this become a reality. Because of your generosity, our community has gained a truly state-of-the-art facility to be enjoyed by generations to come," Deanna Mainil, chair.

"A dream about to come true, shared by a lively local committee who want to thank Prairie Sky Co-op for the generous donation which is helping to make possible a life-size bronze statue dedicated to the memory of pioneer women of Weyburn and area who helped lay the foundation of our community, making it a great place to live," Ross McMurtry, chairman.

Two years ago, Prairie Sky Co-op initiated a matching donation program to assist in the fundraising efforts towards the building of a new hospital to serve Weyburn and surrounding area. ome renovations can be chaotic and shopping for materials in big box stores can lead to disappointment. For superior service and products it is important to work with a locally owned and operated retailer. At Edwards Carpentry & Décor Ltd. Scott always had a passion for carpentry and loves the challenges it can provide. After becoming a journeyman carpenter he was presented with a unique opportunity to expand his carpentry business by purchasing Heisler’s Home

Decorating, a fixture in the community for more than 30 years. “It really gave us the opportunity to create a one-of-akind experience for our customers,” says Kristen. “We are their one stop shop for finishing their home.” Carrying exclusively Decor cabinets, they are able to ensure the highest quality for their clients and provide a wide array of cabinets, flooring, countertops, window coverings, handrails, interior finishing, wallpaper and paint. They also work in association with ClutterX of Regina, which offers a wide variety of closet organizer choices. With a small staff of seven, ECD is small

enough to listen to the client’s wishes and concerns, but are still large enough to get it done. “There are a lot of decisions to make when building a home and the choices are endless. Edwards Carpentry and Décor provided excellent service and support throughout the entire process,” says client Deb Herlick. “The staff was amazing to work with. Working closely with me, they quickly got a feel for my style preferences and were able to provide suggestions, which made the selection process much easier. Having them involved in each decision made the entire house come together. I was especially pleased at how the kitchen cabinets turned out, all I had was a small blurry picture to explain the look I wanted and they made it happen.”

Whether a client’s tastes are traditional or modern, ECD has products to suit, with new samples and styles coming in regularly. When envisioning a dream space, the sky is the limit. With thousands of finishes and products to choose from, it is important to have a guide along the way. The design specialists help clients pinpoint their unique sense of style every day. “I feel our company is unique in several ways,” says Scott. “We have everything the customer needs to design the home of their dreams. We offer cabinetry that is not only custom made to the client’s specifications, but we’ll even custom colour them. The biggest pro to our company is that a customer can pick all their interior finishes, place them on a vision board and change them until they love what they have, and it’s all under one roof. It really beats getting cabinet, countertop, flooring, door, paint and blind samples from five or more different places and hauling them around. We have created a great atmosphere for the customer.” From the initial design to the day you move in, ECD will be there. “We finish what we start!” Edwards Carpentry & Décor Ltd. 1127 Railway Avenue, Weyburn 306.842.2643

Further, customers can now speak with a service advisor before and after they drop off their vehicle, which means better communication and tailored service.

The service department has been expanded to include more staff and services. Their state-of-the-art facility has more equipment to complete almost any job in-house, from maintenance and warranty, to tires and accessories — basically anything you may need for your new, current or upgraded car. Roger Hill, the fixed operations manager, now heads up the team. “I put Roger in charge of the service department because of his knowledge and his personality,”

says Pierson. “I knew he would listen to customers and work continually to serve them better.” Knight Weyburn services any car, whether it was bought from them or not. They sell tires and change them seasonally, which will come in handy this time of year. They also stock heavy-duty tires that are perfect for road trips to or from the oilfield. They have any kind of accessory you can think of, including step bars, chrome accents, bug deflectors and lift kits. Being part of the Knight Automotive Group means they are able to offer longterm care and extended warranties, which provides peace of mind for customers. “We want to give our customers the wow factor,” says Hill. “We want everything to be ready on time, with the accessories looking great. We want to make sure our customers are happy with the outcome, because we recognize that a car is a major purchase.” Hill and his team enjoy building a rapport with their customers and earning their trust to get the job done. Shuttle service is provided within the city and beyond. In a bind, they will send the shuttle as far as an hour away. As Hill says, life doesn’t stop while your car is in the dealership. Loaner and rental vehicles are available upon request. “The expectations were high when we came to the city,” says Pierson. “Change takes time, especially when you’re trying to rebuild, but I want people to know that we are doing everything in our power to make effective change in the dealership.” Call now to make an appointment to service your vehicle or get your winter tires installed to stay safe over the winter months.

T

his July, New Age Electronics will celebrate their 20-year anniversary. The company opened in July 1995 in a small store on Souris Avenue selling SaskTel Mobility cell phones, car and home audio, Sony Discmans, Toshiba cordless phones, and of course big tube TVs. A couple years later, the business moved to a strip mall on the corner of Main Street and Railway. Soon after they purchased space at the other end of the strip mall and began selling mattresses. Both stores quickly outgrew themselves as they diversified and expanded into furniture and appliances. And so, in 2003 they built an appropriately sized building, which is where they remain today.

Estevan/Weyburn

“New Age has also always changed with the times and trends,” says Jeff Chessall, co-owner of New Age Electronics and New Age Motor Sports. “As products like car audio became more difficult to sell, we expanded to fit the current market demand.” They now sell custom home automation, Coast Spa hot tubs and Napoleon and Traeger barbecues. They have also added Simply Computing, which makes them an Authorized Apple Retailer, and more recently added Hunter Douglas Blinds and Window Coverings. With diversification also came New Age Motor Sports in 2008, which opened with the full-line of Polaris ATVs, snowmobiles and a strong line-up of Ranger & RZR

SXSs plus Husqvarna lawn and garden equipment. With strong growth, they expanded into marine products, first selling Princecraft fishing and pontoon boats and have since added Campion Marine and Supreme and Centurion world championship tow boats. With the expansion into marine products, New Age partnered with dealers from Regina to take part in the Regina Indoor RV & Boat Sale — this will be the third year for New Age at the indoor sale. This year, the Regina Indoor RV & Boat Sale starts Friday, February 13 and runs until Sunday, March 1. Recently, New Age Motor Sports has added another 3,500 sq. ft. to the marine showroom — although it’s

currently full of snowmobiles, there will soon be eight to 10 boats on display for the the upcoming season. Continuing the trend of expansion, the company has introduced New Age Storage, which consists of two storage buildings with 30 doors, more than 30 storage containers and more than 70 outdoor storage spots for RVs, boats and trailers. In the beginning, New Age was the place

to get a cell phone or Discman. But now, New Age Electronics can help you outfit your home, from room to room, and indoor or outdoor. Apart from home audio systems, they can make your iPhone or iPad run the entire home with their URC control system. Don’t forget New Age Motor Sports can set you up for outdoor maintenance with a Husqvarna lawn mower, weed whipper and chainsaw, and can set

you up with outdoor toys, such as a Polaris Snowmobile and RZR, Kahuna paddleboard or a Centurion surfboat. And, of course, if you need somewhere to store all of this, they now have New Age Storage. “If that’s not enough, we also have Oakley sunglasses,” says Chessall. “Thank you to all our customers, new and old. We look forward to another 20 years serving Weyburn and surrounding area.”

GROWING TOGETHER: Barber Motors and Weyburn By Tonya Lambert

B

arber Motors has been an integral part of Weyburn and area, through good times and more challenging, since Mal Barber’s Grandfather Cec and father Ron moved their business from Glentworth in 1949. “It is this supportive community atmosphere that makes Weyburn such a great place to live, raise a family and do business,” explains Mal. “Weyburn is made up of people who work together and really care for each other, supporting each other through thick and thin. It is the challenge of tough times that develops our personal character, while it is what we do with our resources in good times that defines it.” Mal, wife Delaine, son Andy and his wife Rhea take pride in contributing to

the well-being of Weyburn and area. Four generations of Barbers and their staff have been actively involved in the community, supporting a diverse range of organizations and events, both as individuals and as a business. Mal proudly recalls the time when his mentor and father, Ron, was mayor and broke city council’s tie, voting to build a new indoor swimming pool. Following his father’s example, Mal chairs the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation, raising money to build and equip a new hospital. Barber Motors, together with many other local businesses, is working hard to make this new hospital a reality. Community service is what makes a small city like Weyburn such a great place to live and has been a big part of

life for members of the Barber family. Andy is proud to be the third-generation of the Barber family to be a Young Fellow and joins his fellow members in selling Christmas trees, raising donations and organizing club events. Over the years, Barber Motors has supported many local clubs, teams and organizations, including the Weyburn Red Wings, Weyburn Minor Sports, The Wheatland Senior Centre, Weyburn Arts Council, United Way, the Triple C Centre, 4H, and much more. Barber Motors is happy to give back to the citizens of Weyburn and the surrounding area. Barber Motors hosts the Festival of Trees put on by the Family Place, a local centre offering classes for children and their families to help them grow and OPPOSITE Festival of trees in the Barber Motors showroom

succeed. “This is an important fundraiser for the community and the Family Place. They do a great job of putting it on, and we’re just excited to be a part of it,” says Andy. “The Festival of Trees brings a lot of joy and happiness. It’s great to see all the kids, parents, and seniors enjoying the Christmas trees. The money raised helps so many families. It really kicks off the Christmas season and makes a statement about the true meaning of Christmas. Barber Motors salutes the city of Weyburn, its citizens and volunteers who make Weyburn a really great place to live and do business. Together, we can make a difference! and 10 leased operators, Streamline Oilfield Services, owned by Kelly Brady,

The company specializes in oilfield fluid hauling, oilfield service, sand and gravel sales, and contaminants hauling for more than 10 oilfield companies of various sizes in the area. The staff of 50 includes office support, mechanics, highly trained and qualified drivers and dispatchers.

Streamline Oilfield Services has recently expanded its new sand and gravel services. Pits are located in the Kisbey and Lake Alma areas with stockpile sites throughout southeast Saskatchewan to offer customers a more cost effective solution to their aggregate needs. Products include sand, gravel, crushed rock, PFRA certified clay and topsoil. The company’s trailers have locked and sealed end gates necessary for hauling contaminants and drill cuttings. They also have heavy equipment including backhoes, D6 and D8 cats, trackhoes and loaders to assist customers in various aspects of site preparation, such as approaches, lease roads, leases, flow lining, as well as in environmental capacities including reclamation and spill cleanup. The company’s rapid growth has enabled well-deserved financial support to the communities it services. Office manager Stephanie Brady says, “To see that we’re providing valuable and competitive service to our customers and we’ve created so many jobs in our community is fantastic. We are also able to support our community in other ways.” The company makes every attempt to use local retailers and contractors, recognizing its civic responsibility to help grow and build their local communities. Streamline Oilfield Services is also a proud supporter of more than 20 charities and organizations in Weyburn and surrounding communities, such as the Weyburn District Hospital Foundation and various children’s and sports organizations.

In the fall of September 2013, Streamline Oilfield Services completed construction of a building housing its repair shop, dispatch and office on 11 acres of land. The company has since become an SGI accredited truck safety shop, which dramatically decreases the turn around time for repairs and maintenance on trucks. Making sure its drivers are safe in a potentially dangerous industry is essential to Streamline Oilfield Services. All drivers must meet provincial standards and go through a significant orientation program that includes safety and equipment maintenance programs. As winners of the Chamber of Commerce’s WEYBEX Award for Best New Venture 2013 and nominated for the same category at the provincial level for the ABEX Award, Streamline Oilfield Services sets itself apart by working closely with customers to create a mutually beneficial relationship. “We put a large focus on customer service and making sure customers are happy,” says Brady.
