askatchewan’s premier spa, Just For You Day Spa and Gift Studio, is nearing its three-year anniversary in Regina, and customers continue to rave about it — especially since it recently won best day spa in both Regina and Saskatoon. Everything about the store meets and exceeds the definition of beautiful.
Owner and 2014 Saskatchewan Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Jessica Tetu, has ensured every detail is taken care of in this impressive spa. The Regina location is the second Just For You to open in Saskatchewan, with a third location scheduled to open in downtown Saskatoon in 2016. A labour of love, the design and fine details have been carefully constructed to maximize the customer’s experience. The layout spans two storeys, with an elevator and separate entrances for staff to minimize customer disruption. A seven-station pedicure lounge full of natural light and an endless variety of rooms for treatments are signatures of this largest and most luxurious spa in Regina. A spa is about the experience — not just the treatments you receive. What really sets Just For You apart is their philosophy. The environment is laid out to encourage you to relax and feel at home. Customers are invited to arrive early to use the heated spa tubs and sauna at no charge before treatment and to unwind afterwards in the fashionable lounge area and enjoy the drink and snack station. Soothing music and chic décor add to an already inviting space — a reminder of what a real spa is about. Just For You Day Spa www.justforyoudayspa.com Regina 1819 Cornwall St 306.757.7546

INTEGRATING ALLOPATHIC &
Complementary Medicines By Tonya Lambert
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a multibillion dollar industry in Canada. According to the Public Health Agency, 70 per cent of Canadians use some form of complementary or alternative health care therapies or natural remedies. These can range from taking vitamins, minerals or botanical products to various therapies such as acupuncture, reiki, reflexology, yoga, massage, chiropractic services or traditional Chinese and Aboriginal medicines.
10

Medicine at the University of Toronto, explains, “Just because a scientific study has not been done on a particular type of complementary medicine does not mean it isn’t effective. Some complementary therapies have been practiced for centuries and there is strong historical and experiential data that supports their effectiveness in some individuals.” Also, some scientifically proven forms of Western medicine have later been found to be harmful, such as synthetic hormone replacement therapy. In Canada, all medical research is funded by the Canadian Institute for Health Research, meaning research into alternative and allopathic medicines are competing for the same dollars. This combined with funding guidelines based largely on the Western allopathic paradigm, makes it difficult for CAM researchers to obtain the necessary funding. Nevertheless, randomized clinical trials of complementary medicines are increasing in Canada and other countries. Several studies have proven the efficacy of various complementary therapies which have then been adopted by Western physicians.
M
ost CAM treats the entire person and not just the physical body, as Western allopathic medicine does. This whole person approach is appealing to many people, particularly middle-aged women, highly educated individuals, people with higher incomes and those who suffer from a chronic illness. Most complementary health care is not covered by provincial health insurance. However, some provinces do cover chiropractic services. Otherwise, people have to pay out-of-pocket or use private insurance or employee health benefits to cover the costs. Most Canadians who use CAM do so in conjunction with Western allopathic
medicine. All medical providers should be informed of all the drugs and natural remedies a patient is taking to avoid any adverse reactions caused by the way these substances alter your physiology. There is a growing recognition in the Canadian medical community of the value of complementary therapies. In recent years, there has been a surge in the number of physicians who have either acquired training in one or more forms of complementary medicine or are working alongside complementary medical practitioners. Some people doubt the efficacy of CAM citing a lack of scientific evidence. However, as Lyndia Balneaves, PhD, director of the Centre for Integrative
The federal and provincial governments are increasingly regulating CAM. The federal government’s The Natural and NonPrescription Health Products Directorate regulates natural health products to ensure their safety and quality. Regulated products are given a NPM number. Also, the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health publishes online reviews on the effectiveness of various types of therapies. The Ontario government regulates both naturopathic doctors and practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine. B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba also regulate naturopathic doctors, who must obtain a pre-med undergraduate degree and then take a four-year naturopathic medical program. Finally, they must pass both provincial and North American standardized exams. Regardless of the type of health care you use, Balneaves says you still need a solid foundation formed from exercise, a healthy diet and good stress management.

Vitamin D: The Sunshine Superstar
ViTamin D’S BenefiTS The evidence is particularly strong when it comes to vitamin D’s role in resisting infection, maintaining bone and muscle and reducing cancer risks.
Glenda Nischuk RNCP Better Living Nutrition Better Living Centre 272 Broadway Street West Yorkton 306.783.0078 www.nutrition.betterlivingcentre.ca

hy is vitamin D so important to our health? Quite simply, it directly and indirectly influences most of what happens in our bodies every second of every day. Vitamin D isn’t actually a vitamin; rather, it’s a hormone precursor. When exposed to UV rays, a chemical cousin of cholesterol in the skin converts them to vitamin D, which then travels to the liver and is converted into the prehormone calcidiol. Calcitriol (the actual hormone) attaches to more than 2,700 sites on the human genome, and it turns on more than 1,000 genes, prompting them to do their jobs.
12
FineLifestyles
Parkland Saskatchewan
Other areas of promising research include studies indicating increasing levels of vitamin D may be a treatment for the winter blues, as well as treating cardiovascular disease, such as stroke, heart attack and heart failure. Research also suggests getting sufficient levels of vitamin D may help the body regulate insulin output, thus defending against insulin resistance and diabetes. Even weight loss is affected by vitamin D — one study showed those with the lowest levels of vitamin D had the hardest time losing weight. The problem is, nearly everyone is deficient. ViTamin D-eficienT Things that reduce how much vitamin D your body makes include: • •
• •
Limited sun exposure — this can be due to sunscreen or indoor lifestyle. Dark skin — if your skin is dark, your sun exposure requirement is three to five times higher. Age — especially if you are older than 65. Digestive problems, such as Crohn’s
•
or celiac disease. Liver and kidney disease.
How Do i geT THe ViTamin D my BoDy neeDS? Fifteen minutes of daily sun exposure at peak time (noon to 1 p.m.) without sunscreen would be enough vitamin D intake for most of us. It takes six hours after exposure to make and absorb vitamin D, so don’t be in a hurry to get in the shower. This sun exposure is only beneficial from April to October. After October the sun’s rays enter the Earth’s atmosphere at too much of an angle and the atmosphere blocks the UVB part of the rays so your skin can’t produce vitamin D. A good rule of thumb is if your shadow is longer than you are tall, you’re not making much vitamin D. This rule also applies to time of day in the summer. During the winter months or on the summer days you don’t get outside, it is very important to take a vitamin D supplement. The recommended dose is 800 to 1000 IU of Vitamin D3 daily, if you are under 50 years of age. If you are over 50 it should be 2000 IU per day. Other vitamin D experts recommend up to 4000 IU per day. If in doubt, have your physician test your vitamin D levels. Come short cold days or long, warm sunny days, don’t overlook this nutrient essential to your health and vitality.

I
am so excited to talk to you about laser hair removal this issue. IPL (intense pulsed light) is the safest and most effective therapy for permanent hair reduction. Treatments are fast, hygienic and do not require numbing creams. Limited sun exposure prior to consultations is required to provide proper skin colour analysis. Treatment duration is determined on an individual basis. HOW EFFECTIVE IS LASER HAIR REMOVAL? Our lasers have been specifically chosen because they offer the fastest results, with the least amount of discomfort.
WHY DO I NEED MULTIPLE SESSIONS? Laser removal requires multiple sessions in order to achieve desired clearance. This is based primarily on biological factors — for instance, the cycle of hair growth. Here at After Hours Salon/Enlighten Laser Melville we consult every individual and recommend a program suitable for his or her needs. DOES THE TREATMENT HURT? The client, with proper preparation, should experience little-to-no discomfort. Clients can experience a sensation often described as a “hot pinch” or “snapping” feeling. The sensation only lasts for a fraction of a second, and you may feel warmth or a tingling sensation for a short time afterward. Our lasers use a cooling system that helps to cool the dermis and neutralize any discomfort. IS TREATMENT WITH LASER SAFE? Laser hair removal is very safe for the skin. There are many advantages in laser hair removal technology for all skin colours. There are no long-term health hazards from laser systems we use. WHAT KIND OF RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT? Each laser hair removal treatment will result in a hair growth reduction. Additionally, hair will grow
progressively slower, lighter and finer with each treatment. It takes more than one treatment to affect all the follicles growing in an area. Many people achieve satisfactory clearance after a few treatments, but individual rests may vary depending on medical and genetic factors. Lighter colored hair may require more treatments than darker colored hair. At the end of your protocol, the desired outcome is 80 per cent to 100 per cent clearance in the treated area. HOW FREQUENTLY DO I NEED TREATMENTS? Laser hair removal treatments are usually preformed every four to six weeks. We will design a program to fit your individual needs before beginning any treatment. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER EACH LASER HAIR R E M OVA L TREATMENT? Temporary pinkness of the skin lasts a very short time, and most people return to work or normal activities immediately after treatment. The treated area will “shed” some hair over the next three to four weeks, and you may experience a period of hairlessness in the area while you wait for the next treatment. I am located in Melville, in the heart of southeast Saskatchewan. Call or email today for a free consultation.

IN PRAISE OF POETRY
Judith Krause, Poet Laureate By Tonya Lambert Photo Don Hall

I
n the year 2000, the Saskatchewan Arts Board, the Saskatchewan Book Awards and the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild established the province’s Poet Laureate Program — the first of its kind in Canada. Under the patronage of Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor, the position is awarded to an established poet who has “meaningful connections with other writers and experience organizing occasions for thinking about poetry differently.” These connections and organizational abilities help the poet laureate to act as a liaison between writers to facilitate meaningful discussions and collaborations. With her wealth of experience as a poet, editor and educator, Judith Krause, a well-known figure in the province’s literary community, is an excellent choice for the position of Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan for 2014-15. Krause, who is the fifth Saskatchewan poet to be appointed to the position, has a clear vision of what she hopes to accomplish during her tenure. “As Poet Laureate, I am keen to promote poetry in general and the work of the many talented poets who live in this province. Poetry is a literary form that many people stop reading after they leave school. It is frequently perceived as too complex and difficult to understand. Ironically, a poem is often what people will search for in a challenging emotional situation to express feelings. I would love to broaden the audience for poetry. There are many different levels of understanding and appreciation for any art form. Exposure to the form is the first step to learning how to enjoy it.”
A self-professed life-long bibliophile, Krause grew up in a home surrounded by books and magazines. Her mother, Pat, a well known journalist and writer, loved to read and passed this love on to her daughter, teaching her to read before she even began school. However, it was not until she was in her teens that Krause tried her hand at writing, taking a creative writing course taught by Ken Mitchell. She has not stopped writing since, publishing four collections of her poetry and a collaborative chapbook, as well as editing several anthologies and a half dozen six individual collections of poems by other writers. Her fifth book of poems, Homage to Happiness, is scheduled for publication by Hagios Press this fall. Krause has always sought out opportunities to pursue her love of reading, writing and language. She studied languages and literature at the University of Regina, the Université de Caen in France and the Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina, where she was awarded her Master of Fine Arts degree. A past president and long-time member of the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild, Krause has been an instructor of creative writing at the University of Regina, the Saskatchewan School of Arts at Fort San, and the Sage Hill Writing Experience. Further from home, she has pursued her literary career in Vermont, Virginia, Florida and France. This immersion in the world of the literary arts has been very important to Krause’s development as a writer. “I was lucky to read many influential Canadian poets in my
formative years —Atwood, Purdy, Newlove, Mandel, Kroetsch, Lane — and to study with some of Saskatchewan’s best poets including Anne Szumigalski. At a summer class at the former Saskatchewan School of the Arts at Fort San, I met a group of poets and writers who became lifelong friends — Bob Currie, Lorna Crozier, Byrna Barclay, Gary Hyland… among others. We formed a writing group that still meets on a regular basis today. The members of this group have changed through the years but its purpose — to receive feedback on new work — has been vital to my growth as a poet.” Krause sees the Internet, which has opened up a previously unimagined array of networking and publishing possibilities, as both the biggest opportunity and the biggest challenge for today’s poets. “From the comfort of your own home or your favourite coffee shop, you can read poems in a variety of online publications and journals from around the globe. There are loads of contests, online workshops and publication offers. The biggest challenge, in my view, is sorting through these opportunities so that a beginning poet does not become the victim of a scam.” “I would encourage all beginning poets to read widely. Read the classics. Read contemporaries. Read beyond the borders of your own country and first language by exploring world poets in the best translations you can find,” says Krause. “And travel. Meet people from many walks of life. Engage in the world. Discover what matters most to you and you will never run out of writing material.”

No. Family is his first and foremost commitment. “Not a day goes by that I don’t acknowledge that becoming a father is the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” states McGillivray. McGillivray married Sabrina in 2008, and since have become parents to two daughters, Myah, three and Layla, 18 months. “Having children is the most amazing thing that’s ever happened in my life. It’s changed my life completely.” McGillivray dedicates everything he can to his family, and that involves strict fashioning of his career and public life. “My primary focus is family and everything else has to work around it. We set up some work rules [and made] hard decisions, but they’ve been the right decisions. I’ve had to turn down opportunities, but I have to be able to just come home and be a dad sometimes.” Although McGillivray easily gushes about his wife and children, he remains modest about himself in the spotlight. Recently, People named him “Sexy Man of the Week,” which he finds humorous. “It’s probably the most awkward thing that’s ever happened to me. My wife [and] my friends thought it was hilarious. No one takes it too seriously, especially me.” At the age of 19, McGillivray was advised: “Life is too short to learn from your own mistakes.” He elaborates, “You’ve got to learn from other people. Lots of people have trouble listening and asking the right questions to people who have already done what they want to do.” Income Property is just one vehicle by which McGillivray educates homeowners on smart investing and renovations. Armed with more than 150 of his own income properties across North America and his B. Comm (Honours), he partnered with longtime friend, Michael Sarracini, and founded the Lifetime Wealth Academy, providing crucial real estate advice and education to want-to-be investors. “Teaching other people is something I always gravitated towards and I was naturally giving real estate and reno advice to my friends and family anyway,” he explains. “I feel my best when people can take something away from the show or a live event. I love hearing when people have learned something or have been inspired to buy a property or take on a renovation because of me. That’s the most rewarding.” In 2015, McGillivray will continue educating homeowners using his knowledge and expertise in real estate as a regular contributor to Fine Lifestyles and Fine Homes magazines. “It’s going to be a good year!” he says with his trademark smile. Seven Tips for Home Sellers
an old toilet or buffing and re-staining kitchen cabinets will help sell the home, then make those types of updates, but keep personal preferences in check. Your RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent can help you prioritize and remain objective.

f you’re thinking about selling your home in 2015, here are some decisions that could help boost your chances of a quick sale.
1. Avoid drastic design changes. The best approach to preparing your home for sale is to declutter and depersonalize so potential buyers can envision themselves in your home. If repainting a bright purple wall, replacing
28

2. Stop neglecting the drippy faucet. Issues that appear minor may actually be a symptom of a larger problem. Addressing issues like plumbing leaks, poor ventilation and cracks in walls helps to avoid surprises from an inspection report and avoid the delay or even cancellation of a sale. When you have the information, you can either make the fixes or work with your agent to adjust pricing during negotiations. 3. Price my home reasonably. It’s understandable to think your home is the best on the block and worth more than all the others, especially if you’ve invested in key upgrades and remodels. While you might be right, the only way to truly know is to consider recent sales of comparable homes in your area. Your RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent can provide you with the latest information and help you list at an appropriately competitive price. 4. Make my home inviting. An eye catching home begins with its curb appeal. The condition of your home’s exterior is a big part of getting buyers in the door. Maintaining the yard, sweeping the porch and driveway, replacing the tattered welcome mat or missing house numbers and removing clutter all help to improve curb appeal.
5. Thin out the clutter. Decide what stays and what goes before you put your home on the market. By the time the forsale sign goes up, the home should be clutter free. You can either toss things you don’t want, sell these items or move them to storage. Personal items such as your prized knick-knack collection, clothes overflowing out of closets and family photos should all be removed. You want all closets and cupboards to appear as spacious as possible. 6. Clean like I’ve never cleaned before. It’s easy to focus on cleaning the major surfaces, high-traffic areas and areas that are visible. But don’t forget the dust on top of the refrigerator, the slats on the window blinds, cabinets under the kitchen or bathroom sink and cobwebs behind the guest-room door. Potential buyers will look in every nook and cranny, so be sure to take the time to look high and low for dirt. 7. Plan my next step. Determine where you’ll go next before your home goes up for sale. Are you prepared to move if your home sells quickly? Although it might not be typical, a quick sale is certainly possible. On the other hand, are you prepared if your home doesn’t sell quite as fast? Be sure to talk with your RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent about your relocation needs and timeline. Call 306.783.6666 to find a local RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent who will help you meet your real estate goals.

PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS IN THE VIRTUAL WORLD By Brook Thalgott
Today, businesses face far more risks than in the past, such as business interruption, cash flow and liquidity, reputation, regulatory changes and weak economic climate. Now, businesses face another growing threat — cyber risk. No company, no matter how big, is immune to issues from the virtual world. Just ask Sony Pictures and Target. Both suffered massive security breaches that affected both customers and employees alike. In today’s connected world, businesses must be aware of the risks posed in cyberspace, and how to protect against threats.

ccording to the Globe and Mail, cyber attacks have already hit more than one third of Canadian businesses. Gaining access via anything connected to the Internet, these well-funded and sophisticated criminal enterprises will attack businesses of any size and cause serious damage. Because the risk is constantly evolving, and the legal system is usually playing catch-up to technology, businesses have to protect themselves from all angles. With smaller businesses (less than 100 people) often the target, it really isn’t the massive multinationals alone that need to worry. While cyber risk insurance can help, it’s not the only piece of the puzzle. Cyber risk needs to be addressed across the whole business. An enterprise cyber risk management strategy is a must for any business these days, and senior management needs to be front and centre in planning and implementation. Where the IT department was the gatekeeper, now the whole business needs to be aware of the risks presented by cyber crime. First, businesses need to address what exactly is at risk from cyber attacks. It may be customer information, proprietary information on products or services, or communications between employees. The big question to ask is what will a hacker find valuable if they get in? The risk isn’t just financial — it’s reputational. When Sony Pictures
was hacked in 2014, they not only lost money over the release of the film The Interview, they also suffered serious reputational damage by the leak of sensitive emails between senior executives. Businesses must ask what needs to be protected and why. It’s not just senior management that needs to be involved in the development of a cyber risk strategy. A strategy should assess the current plan and practices and where improvements are needed, determine a monitoring process and what the procedures are if attacked. From the top down, the whole organization plays a part in keeping the business protected. Employees need to be educated about their responsibilities in minimizing risk, with a robust policy and compliance guidelines. Internal and external networks need to be assessed on an ongoing basis, with full knowledge of who has access to what and where everything is located. A well-planned and executed cyber risk strategy will help your business become cyber resilient. As the world becomes more and more connected, the opportunities for businesses grow — as do the risks. While we’re often prepared for the traditional business threats, we may neglect the ones that come from our connectivity. However, with a robust, well-planned and executed strategy, cyberspace risks can be mitigated.

Yorkton Co-op Celebrates 75 years
A History Revisited
C
o-operatives have been around for many years and Yorkton Co-op is no exception. Since its inception, on Mar. 6, 1940, it has grown to a $100 million business, with holdings in several communities and a staff of more than 200 — a far cry from how it was in the beginning. The following is a glimpse at Yorkton Co-op’s first 25 years. After the Great Depression, resources of all kinds were unused while human needs remained unsatisfied. To remedy this, communities all over Saskatchewan set out to see if they could help themselves improve their conditions and set out to organize local livestock marketing associations. Farmers, wanting better value for their purchases, were also interested. They realized the cost of their supplies were as important as the prices they received for their products. Local co-operative organizations were formed and most concentrated their efforts in the field of farm supplies, especially farm fuels. By the first year’s end, 70 members of the Yorkton Coop owned capital worth $300. A small warehouse was purchased to handle

petroleum products and Clayton Frith was hired as the manager. Since they didn’t have a truck, fuel was delivered in drums. In the second year of operation, a granary was purchased for $85. It was reconditioned and used as the first office. Operations continued, and in 1944, the manager was paid a salary instead of a commission. In 1945, Yorkton Co-op purchased property on Front Street from the city for $300. Fuel tanks and a coal shed were purchased later that year. In 1948, the first fuel truck was purchased. In 1949, the members decided they would expand services, opening a grocery and hardware store on Betts Avenue. Between 1949 and 1955, regional development started with the opening of branches in Wroxton and Tonkin. Modernizations were completed throughout the years to make for expanded, more efficient operations. In 1956, Saltcoats and Yorkton Co-ops amalgamated, initiating a new phase of regional co-operative development. Also in 1956, the organization developed plans for expanding the business and secured property on First Avenue. The opening of the store on First Avenue, along with the adjoining service station, was the
significant expansion that took place in 1957. In 1960, further steps were taken to expand once again and property was purchased on Third Avenue for the development of a store/shopping centre. In 1961, construction of a new service station was started on West Broadway and construction began for the shopping centre on Third Avenue. The service station opened in 1962, and in October of the same year, the new shopping centre opened. In March of 1965, the Co-op opened up the Furniture Mart in the old store building on First Avenue with encouraging results. In June of 1965, Dubuc and Bangor Co-ops joined forces with Yorkton Co-op. 1965 marked the Co-op’s 25th Anniversary and everyone had good reason to celebrate. From its humble beginnings in 1940, Yorkton Co-op had grown to a multi-commodity business located in many communities. Find out more about Yorkton Co-op in the next issue of Fine Lifestyles Magazine. Custom Designs anD metal Work at Iron Town Manufacturing By Tori Stafford
C
utting and working with metals may be age-old practices, but that doesn’t make them obsolete, or any less beautiful as an art form. From basic brackets or base plates to intricate signs or elaborate gates, metal work is still used every day in both the construction and decoration of homes, businesses and outdoor spaces. With 12 years of experience in welding and working with a variety of metals, Alex Krupnov has the skills and machinery to create items that span the spectrum from simple to complex. This is precisely what he does through his business — Iron Town Manufacturing.

“If a client says they need a thousand of a particular kind of bracket, I am happy to do that for them,” says Krupnov. “But the more artistic work is really fun to do. I like working with the clients to make sure they’re happy with the finished product.” Since opening in November 2014, Krupnov has created a variety of items for clients. His wrought iron signs have a sense of whimsy and old-world artistry, but are created using a state-of-theart CNC Plasma cutting machine. This allows Krupnov to design and make detailed custom pieces, including farm nameplates, business signage, address plates and decorative wall hangings.
“It’s a really neat process,” Krupnov says of working with clients, from coming up with a design to handing them the finished product. “It starts with drawing, and then inputting that into the computer. In the end, it is really neat to see what it looks like when it is finished and you can actually touch it.” With the ability to cut through metals up to one-inch thick, there aren’t many things Krupnov can’t to create at Iron Town Manufacturing. He has built stately and elegant property gates and beautiful ornate brackets for clients looking to add both function and fashion to their homes. Krupnov is able to replicate items his client has seen in magazines or online,
“Whatever the client needs and wants, I am happy to work with them and do that,” says Krupnov. “I am happy when the client is happy.” or he will work with them to create one-of-a-kind designs that cannot be purchased elsewhere.
a drink and conversation,” he says. “It is something my family does and it’s nice to create for other families.”
Another unique item Iron Town Manufacturing offers is custom-made fire pits. One of his favourite things to work on for clients, Krupnov says he is able to create both small and simple designs that can be moved from place to place, as well as larger, permanent backyard fixtures. Krupnov enjoys creating fire pits for his clients because he knows how well-loved these items become.
But more than anything, Krupnov enjoys working on custom designs for clients and creating something for them they cannot find elsewhere.
“I really enjoy making the fire pits, because I know they are a place where family and friends can get together around and have

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES
Why Hire
By Tori Stafford
ProfeSSionalS?
The old saying, “If you want a job done right, you have to do it yourself,” has its place — when it comes to things like shopping, cleaning, or any other task each individual likes done their own way. But when it comes to home renovations, doing the job yourself doesn’t mean you’re doing it right. We all know someone who’s gone through a major renovation disaster. If it hasn’t happened to you, it’s likely happened to someone you know. 42

nd if you thought trying to install your own front porch was a headache, imagine the migraine that comes from being told by a bylaw officer your custom porch doesn’t meet code because the spindles in the banisters are too far apart. From knowing when you need a permit and how to get one, to ensuring your investment stands the test of time, there are so many places in home renovation that DIY projects can leave you in a messy situation. Starting with the bottom line — budget — there are a plethora of reasons hiring a professional contractor can be more financially sound than taking on a major task yourself. Certainly, you can hang a picture, but that doesn’t mean you can hang drywall, and doing so without the know-how can lead to major financial burdens. According to the Canadian Home Builders’ Association’s Top Ten Reasons to Hire a Professional, liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage is one reason not to overlook. We all like to plan for our projects to take place without issue, but if issues do arise the last thing you need is to be absorbing the cost of damages to your own property — or your neighbours — in the event of an accident. You can’t predict when a wind might come up and blow a stack of shingles off your roof during a project. Having the security of knowing that the professional you hired has coverage to protect you from liability should that happen means you don’t have to work double time as a human shield for your neighbour’s BMW. Another way that spending money to hire a pro saves you cash in the long run is through warranties. Most professional renovations come with warranties on labour, according to the Canadian Home Builders’ Association (CHBA). This means that, like other major consumer purchases, the work you have done will be guaranteed, and this guarantee will be in writing within your contract. As
well, if you’re having something installed, such as an air conditioning unit or a power-saving water heater, opting to use a professional means you won’t void the manufacturers’ warranties on the products you’re putting into your home. Professional contractors also know the ins and outs of the industry. They often have memberships or preexisting relationships with manufacturers or wholesale distributors, or will receive contractor rates on materials. These savings get passed along to the homeowner in the long run, be it in saving on the wood for your new deck, or the screws to install your new garage door. But apart from knowing what they’re doing, saving your money and protecting your investment, there is another perk to using a professional for anything from installing tile to building an addition that might just be the best reason of all: Having a professional do the work not only puts your mind at ease, but it leaves you open to do other things — like decide what your next project should be.

He believed all Canadians should have access to fair credit and should be treated with dignity and respect by their financial institutions. He developed a cooperative business model that focuses on longterm secure financial products based on

the values of inter-cooperation, personal commitment, integrity and solidarity with the community. T he Desjardins’ mission states: “At Desjardins Group we know what dreams are made of. Our story began over a century ago with one man’s dream. Today Desjardins Group is the largest cooperative financial group in Canada. You can rely on our experience of over 100 years for the support you need to achieve your financial goals.” LR Future’s partnership with Desjardins Financial Security Investments Inc., part of Desjardins Group, brings these 100 years of experience right to your doorstep. C ombining Desjardins Group’s commitment to core values with LR Future’s value-based approach makes sense and creates huge opportunities for Parkland residents. Laurie and her team love to work with individuals, couples and groups through a process to discover what they truly value when it comes to finances, economics and resources. “It’s an eye opening experience that gives clarity and perspective. It also provides us with a higher degree of understanding and awareness when it comes to recommending insurance and investments to fit their needs,” says Laurie. Getting to the root of what people want and need is a theme echoed by Desjardins’ chair of the board, as well as president and CEO, Monique F. Leroux. “While it’s true our world is changing, one thing remains the same: the way it changes and evolves is spurred by men and women, by people,” says Leroux. “Our world evolves based on the actions people take. And now, more than ever before, our world needs to put the focus back on the needs of people – the central tenet of the cooperative movement.” LR Future does just that by getting to the root of what people truly value, want and need and by ensuring their investments and insurance match. They offer service that is complete, comprehensive and close to you.

WHY USE A PROFESSIONAL RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty Agent? By Courtney Tait
With extensive technology available nowadays, it may seem cheaper and more convenient to sell or buy your house independently. However, RE/MAX Blue Chip REALTORS速 bring in-depth market knowledge and widespread realty experience to the home buying and home selling processes, which makes for a much more enjoyable and productive realty experience.
56
FineLifestyles

Agents give solid advice on staging and getting your house ready for a showing. They also handle negotiations on important factors such as price, financing terms, inspections and inclusions or exclusions to the sale. Between the initial offer and the settlement, questions and issues often arise. The necessary paperwork alone can be overwhelming for most sellers. Your RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent is the best person to objectively help you resolve these issues and move the transaction to completion. BUYING Real estate agents are essentially your personal expert advisors — they are there to help you through the process of buying a new home with the least amount of stress. REALTORS® take the time to explain how the process works (the timelines, financing, closing costs, possible inspections and more), and this helps to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Your RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agent will help with market information and neighbourhood pros and cons, as well as affordability and what is realistically available in your price range. Once you are ready to view houses, the agent will help with history and background information. “Our RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agents have been in the business or the area long enough to be able to anticipate issues with certain homes or properties and are able to help you avoid unnecessary problems.”
Y
ou don’t need to know everything about buying and selling real estate if you hire a real estate professional who does. RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty agents are professionally educated and fully trained to guide you through the sales process with the least amount of risk possible. SELLING Many people have the perception that selling a house with a REALTOR® costs more money and think they can save pennies selling their house themselves. However, as Doris Shank affirms, “At RE/MAX®, we can show you how to
keep more money in your pocket using a REALTOR® over selling your property on your own.” One of the biggest benefits of using a RE/MAX Blue Chip REALTOR® to sell your house is their acute knowledge of market pricing and other factors that affect property values, which is essential to making a good sale. Your REALTOR® will provide you with accurate and up-todate information on pricing and market activity, including details of the price, financing and terms and conditions of competing properties. These are key factors in getting your property sold at the best price, quickly and with minimum hassle.
When choosing a REALTOR®, it is most important to look for someone you enjoy working with and who understands your housing goals and needs. Go to open houses and meet the agents or stop in at the office. Remember, the basis for an agent’s success and continued career in real estate is referrals. This emphasis gives agents strong incentives to make sure clients are happy and satisfied. When you hire a RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty Agent, you get professional and personalized service from start to finish. At RE/MAX®, you can dream with your eyes open and leave the details to the professionals.

Keeping Your Eyes Happy and Healthy By Kim Mannix Vermette Photos Judith Stewart Photography

or Dr. Candace Tokaruk, eye health is not just a profession — it’s a passion. When customers come to her one-stop clinic and eyeglass dispensary, Vision Sense Eyecare, they are met with an optometrist who not only gives them a thorough eye health examination and accurate prescription, but also the important information to keep their eyes happy and healthy. When asked what the best thing about her job is, the Yorkton native is proud to say it’s not just one thing. “What I enjoy the most right now is when I know I’ve made a difference for someone, either by prescribing a new pair of glasses that make their days better, catching an eye disease or health condition early, helping a child see clearly for the first time, or successfully reversing a lazy eye in a child so they aren’t limited by it now or in later life,” she says. This commitment to care and health isn’t just on her mind during working hours, but also during off hours, when she can often be found giving presentations to schools or working with multidisciplinary healthcare groups in the region to facilitate better monitoring and treatment of chronic diseases. She is also a gymnastics coach and a mother of four small children. When Dr. Tokaruk first took over Vision Sense Eyecare several years ago, it was always with the mind to grow and expand the services offered. is already a one-stop eye care facility, with both the clinic and a full-service eyeglasses and contact lens dispensary, to keep patients seeing clearly and looking good. But even with Dr. Tokaruk’s enthusiasm, there is only so much time in a day. To further meet the needs of her patients she needed to bring in a colleague. At the beginning of January, Dr. Katelyn Leidl joined Vision Sense Eyecare, which has already proven to be an exciting addition for both patients and staff. “Dr. Leidl will make it easier to always have a doctor available for our patients, especially for
any vision emergencies that arise,” says. Dr. Tokaruk. “She also brings a fresh perspective and great energy to the clinic.” Dr. Leidl grew up in Esterhazy and says she was excited to find a great clinic close to home. As a student, she interned with Dr. Tokaruk at Vision Sense Eyecare, and says she is thrilled to join a practice that offers such a helpful, friendly dynamic. “I could see right away Dr. Tokaruk really takes the time to explain things and make patients feel comfortable with their care and diagnosis. It was a really good fit for me and the kind of care I want for my patients too,” says Dr. Leidl.
The optical dispensary offers a range of designer frames, specialty and cosmetic contact lenses, as well as certified safety glasses. Patients of any age can feel comfortable at Vision Sense Eyecare, and feel assured both doctors have what they need to keep their eyes looking and feeling good.

he Ford GT was the talk of the town all week. This thrilling two-seater sports car was inspired by Ford’s GT40 race car of the 1960s. First introduced in 2005, this newest model sets a standard all its own. Some of the highlighting features of this iconic car include a 600 horsepower twin-turbo EcoBoost six-cylinder engine, sculptural flying buttresses off the b-pillars, as well as other highly inventive aerodynamic solutions. The GT offers an estimated zero to 60 acceleration time of about three seconds and a top speed greater than 200 mph. Because of its lightweight carbon fibre construction, the GT is expected by Ford to exhibit one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any production car.
Winners of this year’s show included the ever-popular Ford F-150 for North American Truck of the Year and the Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI for North American Car of the Year. This marks the eighth time that Ford has walked away with the coveted award. The prestegious awards have many attributes that are taken into account during judging by an esteemed group of American and Canadian journalists. Noted by many who attended, this year’s show is said to be one of the most fascinating and creative in the show’s 22 year history. It has truly caused many attendees to look forward to what will be on the show floor next year. www.forbes.com www.autonet.ca www.ca.autoblog.com

Town of Langenburg: Community and Economy Growing Together By Tonya Lambert
T
he Saskatchewan economy is booming, the people of the province are thriving, and more and more people are choosing to call the province home. In October, Statistics Canada announced Saskatchewan’s population had reached an all-time high of 1.13 million people. They also released a report that month, stating the province had the second lowest unemployment rate in the country and the highest job creation rate. The town of Langenburg, located 15 km west of the Manitoba border on Highway 8 and the Yellowhead, is a prime example of the province’s economic growth and prosperity. In 2014 alone, the community saw the opening of 13 new businesses, the implementation of a curbside recycling program and the installation of new playground equipment at Centennial Park.

In the fall, the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport announced Langenburg had been chosen to be part of the Main Street Saskatchewan Program to revitalize the town’s main thoroughfare and attract even more businesses to the expanding community. In addition, in December, work began on the town’s new K-12 school scheduled to open in 2016. The agriculture and potash industries, the other two pillars of the Langenburg community, are flourishing alongside the business sector. There are four potash mines within 45 minutes of the town, providing employment to many people throughout the area. One of the mines, Mosaic’s K3, opened only two years ago and another, K2, was recently expanded bringing more jobs and increased prosperity to the region.
The town of Langenburg currently boasts a population of 1,400, with an additional 600 people residing in the surrounding R.M. Situated in the Parkland region, the Langenburg area is rich in recreational opportunities for every season. Lake of the Prairies in nearby Asessippi Provincial Park has spectacular walleye fishing with a derby held each June, while Asessippi Ski Hill provides an excellent chance for exercise and excitement during the winter months. A nine-hole grass greens golf course can be found at Carlton Trail Regional Park, just 10 minutes south of town. Langenburg has a swimming pool, sports grounds, skating and curling rinks, several parks and “Goliath,” the world’s largest swing. As well as a movie theatre, library and museum, the town has an active arts council and strong dance, soccer and hockey programs. August 2015 will

Warren distinctly recalls Dave’s response when asked if he was alright with him working for the competition. “If it’s not you, it will be someone else, so go ahead!” Dave responded. In December 2013, Dave, then 80 years of age, was being pressured by Ford to upgrade

the aging downtown facility. Warren, set to succeed as dealer operator, along with his wife Karen, purchased the former Ag dealership, Wardale Equipment, situated on Highway 16 West just out of town. In January 2014, work began on a complete renovation on the 15,000 sq. ft. facility to bring it up to Ford’s Millennium Building Program standards. “I can’t say enough about Ford regarding the ownership transition and building phase. They were absolutely excellent to deal with,” says Warren. “It’s unbelievable how quickly the whole process came together!” The speedy turnaround was due largely in thanks to local contractor Jacob’s Construction, whose crew did a massive renovation within five months. In that timeframe, all mechanical and electrical
systems were completely upgraded, and new hoists and equipment were installed. Langenburg Motors moved to the new facility in June 2014, just six months after making the decision to relocate. The dealership features a spacious six vehicle showroom with customer lounge, an eight bay shop, and a large parts and service area complete with a dual lane service reception drive-thru. “Karen and I are excited to have the opportunity to take Langenburg Motors to the next level. We have increased inventory substantially, in both new and pre-owned. Ford has a great product line-up, including Canada’s best-selling vehicle, the F150, and the new location has excellent drive by visibility right along the Yellowhead,” says Warren.

While managing two dealerships can present challenges and a lot of demand on his time, Warren is proud of what he and Karen have been able to accomplish in the community. “Langenburg is amongst the smallest towns in Saskatchewan that has two factory compliant automobile dealerships. Our customers are making significant investments in vehicles and service, and they deserve to do their business in a modern, professional environment.” The dealership currently employs 10 fulltime staff, and expects to welcome more as the business grows. “The success of a business is reliant on its staff and the support of its loyal customers. We are very fortunate in both regards. It’s satisfying to have my parents able to see this progression — the next era of the business they committed to 47 years ago,” says Warren. Dave, now 81, comes to work every day as general
“When it comes to honesty, trustworthiness, expertise and courtesy, I am really thankful for the people at Langenburg Motors. I recommend them without hesitation to family and anyone else (regardless of the make of their vehicle) in need of a great garage and dealership. f you are looking for a way to build up your health, spend time with friends and family, and dive into spa relaxation, Sauna Lifestyle is here for you. Darius and Lina Petkevicius of Darius Carpentry Ltd. decided to bring a slice of their Lithuanian heritage to Saskatchewan through a subdivision of their company, Sauna Lifestyle, which focuses on building indoor and outdoor custom saunas for families and businesses. In many European countries, rather than simply a home luxury, saunas play a central role in social life. Going back as far as the 13th century in Lithuania, public saunas were a gathering place where the community would come together to accept a new member into the family, discuss community issues and tell stories. The sauna has remained a popular gathering place to relax and socialize

Saunas afford many health benefits, providing a space for physical and mental relaxation as well as helping with certain conditions, like asthma, bronchitis and joint pain. The heat in saunas opens up pores, facilitates detoxification and helps shed old skin. Saunas can also improve the body’s immune system by raising the body temperature, which in turn causes the body to create more white blood cells and antibodies. Saunas can also help to induce a deeper, more relaxing sleep.
Owner of Darius Carpentry and Sauna Lifestyle, Darius is a construction engineer and has been working in construction for more than 20 years. Through Darius Carpentry, he builds house additions, garages, decks and fences and does all interior work as well as renovations. He also has significant experience building log houses. With his skill in construction and cultural knowledge of saunas, not only will he provide quality workmanship, he can also show customers how to get the most out of their new sauna.
These health benefits help the old and young. Sauna professionals recommend saunas for children as well, to help with asthma, allergies and building a healthy immune system. Sauna Lifestyle will

The company also provides the option of a mobile sauna, which can be built in a trailer or camper so you can take it with you to the lake or even surprise your friends by bringing it to a party. Celebrating 50 Years of Quality Construction By Melanie Furlong Photos Affinity Photography

n a career that involves working outside in all seasons, hardiness is key. Allan Jacob, owner of Jacob’s Construction, says he and his crew work relentlessly no matter the weather. “We work hard to get things done and get them done right,” says Allan. This stamina, which Allan attributes to his German forebears, has held Jacob’s Construction in good stead. This year, the company is celebrating 50 years in business, originally founded by Allan’s father, Ron Jacob, in 1965 when the area’s potash mines were just firing up. Ron, who was first trained as a bricklayer, could see there was a real need for good quality homebuilders in the area. He went
to school in Moose Jaw to obtain his journeyman carpenter papers, leaving his wife and five children at home for months at a time. Allan, the eldest of Ron’s five boys, learned carpentry from his father and also became a journeyman carpenter in Moose Jaw in 1983. “My dad instilled in me that a job’s not done until it’s done,” says Allan. “But that doesn’t mean taking shortcuts. It takes stamina to drive you.” Allan’s whole team is steadfast, especially staff member Harold Yeske, who worked with the company for more than 40 years before his recent retirement. Journeyman Garry Hildebrandt and apprentices
Donovan Nerbas and Logan McDonell are also valuable members of the team as are employees Walter Busch and Klinton Wagner who have been with the company for many years. Allan’s own two sons, Dustin and Chris, now work for the company and are taking up the business as well. The company takes pride in having trained many young people in construction during the summers. Allan says, “Often they carry on to other things, but later in life they’ll tell us they learned a lot to help themselves in their own homes by building decks and other projects.”

Building custom homes, renovations and additions, commercial buildings, roofing and driveways are just a few of their specialty areas. In a small town like Langenburg, diversification is inevitable. Over the years, Jacob’s Construction has done everything from building PMU barns in Manitoba to completely renovating a machine shop into a firstrate Ford dealership. Allan says it’s very fulfilling to take someone’s plans for their dream house and succeed in building it for them. “Customers are all different and have different needs,” says Allan, “but working
with them to make the project a success is very important to us.”

When a house built by Jacob’s Construction comes up for sale, the company’s solid reputation stands behind it. “It’s a small town,” says Allan’s wife, Carla. “If something isn’t done right, people in the community know about it.” Homeowners Luke and Megan say they are extremely happy with their new home built by Jacob’s Construction. “We were amazed at the speed at which Allan and his crew constructed such a high quality home,” says Luke. “We would highly

Budget Blinds is a locally owned professional business and understands life is busy; that’s why they strive to make the process of choosing new window treatments as easy as possible. It all starts with an in-home consultation where proper measurements are taken and customers have the ability to view from hundreds of different styles and colours of blinds. All window coverings are custom ordered and once they arrive their professional installers inspect and install the product in your home or business and then back it with a “no questions asked” warranty. “We get a lot of calls and e-mails from people who have tried to go about the process on their own, only to have measured their windows improperly or weren’t happy with the quality of product they bought online or in a catalogue,” says Jody Johnson. “When it comes to beautifying your home, using the services of a local professional can help you avoid costly and disappointing mishaps. If our customers get exactly what they wanted and didn’t have to leave the house or lift a finger to get it, then we’ve accomplished exactly what we’ve set out to do!” Get started with your own personal consultation today by calling Budget Blinds at 306.783.1699, visiting www.budgetblinds.com/yorkton, or stop by their beautiful new showroom at 27 First Ave N. in Yorkton.
