Style Bar prides itself on quality name brand apparel, in an assortment of sizes and cuts to accommodate all varying styles and shapes. She carries a wide range of highend lines at affordable prices for both men and women. any women dream of a job they love that enables them to set their own hours, work from home, and earn a substantial income. What if you could do this all in the company of your best girlfriends, viewing beautiful, awardwinning designer jewelry available at a fraction of what you might expect to pay? Sheri Johnston and Lindsay Wolfe are two fortunate Manitoba entrepreneurs. Star stylists with Stella & Dot, an Inc. 500 fastest growing company, Sheri and Lindsay are the front face for celebritycoveted pieces created by award-winning designers made to fit every budget. Sheri Johnston first discovered the company when she fell in love with a

Stella & Dot bracelet worn by her sister. Four years later she leads her own team of stylists in Manitoba. Like Sheri, Lindsay Wolfe first learned about Stella & Dot shortly after moving to Manitoba with her young family. Lindsay also leads her own team of stylists all across the country. “We call ourselves the Stella sisters,” says Sheri. “The stylist community is all about empowering women and helping one another succeed.”
assistance with regular meetings and smart tips to help each woman grow her business. Stylists can then take their exclusive Stella & Dot trunk show to any event for a wonderful evening with great friends and fashionable jewelry and accessories. At home, with food and friends, it is a fun way to spend an evening. With items ranging from $19 up to $258, the jewelry is suitable for a variety of tastes and budgets.
“Getting started with Stella & Dot was extremely simple,” says Lindsay. A typical startup kit begins at $199 and includes $350 in free accessories, not to mention the additional resources included in the business-in-a-box kit. New stylists join under a team leader such as Sheri or Lindsay and receive
“My favorite part of a trunk show is when I put a piece of jewelry on a woman; spin her around and hear her friends say, ‘That’s amazing!’ says Sheri. “The look on her face is the best part of my job.” While both Sheri and Lindsay never envisioned themselves in sales prior to becoming Stella & Dot stylists, they say the quality
of the brand and ease of hosting trunk shows has made it easy to be successful. For Lindsay, a mother of three young children, one of the biggest benefits of being a Stella & Dot stylist is the flexibility. “I started my business with a three month old daughter and two and a half year old twins,” says Wolfe. “That’s proof there’s flexibility in this business.” There is no minimum amount stylists are required to sell, so they can devote as much or as little time to it as they wish, adjusting the trunk shows bookings to the demands of their lives. Many women run their business on top of working full or parttime jobs to supplement their income. With global growth, and especially across Canada, Sheri says it’s an excellent time for Manitoba women to find their own success as Stella and Dot stylists. Why a Proper Fit Makes All the Difference

n today’s world, there are still many women who have never had a professional bra fitting not to mention a “refit” because our bodies change. Wearing the incorrect size is wrong for a host of reasons. A BAsic HeAltH cHeck The wrong fit can cause a sore back, headaches, indents in the shoulders, numbness in the arms, redness, bruising from wires and even circulation problems.
A ProPer Fit The band size is the most important part of your bra. There needs be a snugness to the band to

provide support and lift for your breasts. The straps should sit pleasantly on the shoulders without movement or digging into skin. The wire cups should fit the whole breast without cutting into the tissue or the armpit. The gore of the bra (the piece between each cup) should sit nicely on the breastbone. We know that if you aren’t happy with the fit, you won’t wear the bra. Comfort has to come first and we will take all factors into consideration at a fitting. An exPerience The first fitting can be awkward but it doesn’t have to be. At Gravity, we provide you a bra that we think will be a good start to a great fit. Once on, we adjust the band and straps. We always appreciate your privacy. When your size is determined, you choose styles and colours. Because we know our collections intimately, we bring the lingerie to you. Each product line fits a bit different and knowing the fit of each of our products is a vital part of finding
your perfect fit. Trust us to create a calm environment to make the experience less overwhelming so that you can actually have fun with your fitting. A collection When starting your lingerie collection, begin with the basics — beige and black. Add coordinating panties or thongs to complete a lingerie set for light and dark clothing. You’ll be amazed at how wonderful wearing a matching set can feel. Next add colour. Hot new colours like sapphire or boysenberry can be swapped out for your basic black. Blush pink or scarlet red can be equally invisible under whites as your ‘beige bra’. Every few months add a new beautiful piece to your ensemble. The more lingerie you have the longer your collection will last. Go ahead, add sexy and don’t forget to include a strapless bra and some shapewear for that special outfit. Remember, your lingerie will last even longer if you hand wash and lay to dry.

f you thought private fittings were a luxury of the rich and famous, think again. Swimwear Express offers customers the indulgence of trying on swimwear in the most comfortable atmosphere — the privacy of your own home or from owner Jaime Gregorash’s Marjorie Street boutique. Swimwear Express is an inspiration that grew from Gregorash’s decade of experience in the swimwear industry. She recalls how women would feel uncomfortable having to step out of the change room to see themselves in the mirror. “They were so hard on themselves,” she says. “I realized in those moments I wanted to make women feel comfortable and secure in their bodies when it came to trying on bathing suits.”
“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line.” - Lucille Ball
Swimwear Express not only offers a mobile store, but also personalized instore appointments that gives women the opportunity to try on swimsuits in a place of their choosing where they can feel completely at ease while finding the perfect fit. Gregorash, who services Winnipeg and the surrounding area by appointment only, uses her expertise to choose pieces one-on-one or pack up pieces from her store to best fit the customers’ needs — creating a unique, personalized and convenient shopping experience.. “Swimwear shopping doesn’t have to be a bad experience,” says Gregorash. “At Swimwear Express, it’s only me in the store. I often hand pick suits I think will flatter my customer and that they will like. This makes them feel comfortable and good about themselves without having to leave the change room.” Gregorash brings everything to you — including an extensive knowledge of swimwear. Swimwear Express carries a variety of high quality, unique suits from known brands at competitive prices. Each line comes in many different styles, from bigger cup sizes to mastectomy suits to full figure, to tankini and competitive suits all the way to structured bikinis and cover-ups ranging in sizes from six to 24. “People often come in skeptical because they feel anxious trying to choose the
right swimsuit for their body type,” says Gregorash recalling a client who hadn’t worn a suit for 17 years. “She never swam with her nine-year-old nephew but came to see me when I opened my store. She spent the whole day here, rocking many different suits. She ended up buying two — and went swimming with her nephew the next day.”
often feel self-conscious with the way they look. Swimwear Express wants to promote a positive atmosphere, letting go of any shame and embracing all types of beauty.
Many women not only have trouble finding a suit, but confide in Gregorash that they haven’t worn a suit for years because they are embarrassed and uncomfortable — avoiding the beach altogether or choosing to wear a t-shirt and shorts. Some women have never even swam with their kids or grandkids before. Gregorash says women, even young girls,
Clients leave Swimwear Express radiating a fresh new confidence, which Gregorash says is much more important than a sale. “I knew from the very beginning I had found something special,” she says.
“We’re all different, but beautiful in our own way. Every woman deserves to feel great in a suit.”

Little girls, Hollywood filmmakers and romantics dream about it; weddings are magical days, celebrating the union of two hearts in the company of your favourite people. They are days meant to last forever in our minds, days meant to one day evoke nostalgia and days that envelope all things love.
I
n this issue we have highlighted some key “must haves” when planning your big, beautiful day. As unique as you are your wedding is a chance to showcase who you are together, as a couple. Here are some suggestions to be mindful of when planning your wedding.
Venue
– Every bride knows a venue sets the stage for the entire event. Be choosy; select a location that can execute exactly what you need in terms of guest accommodations, meal options and space. Our partner’s at the Hilton Winnipeg Airport Suites are venue experts and their space is especially convenient for any guests travelling from afar.

Photos – As with all major decisions do your research and book early. Shawn Fillion of Pepper Apple Photography has great tips in this feature about creating a shot list and being realistic to help create photos that exude happiness.
Hair – Be it an elegant up-do, a cascade
– Whether you are proposing, buying a gift for your groom or thanking your parents for all they’ve done, nothing is quite as personal as the gift of jewellery. Sutton Smithworks not only designs custom jewellery, but also offers an amazing selection of keepsakes.
Invitations – Your guests look forward to receiving their invitation in the mail. Choose wording and paper reminiscent of your theme and colours. Labelle’s is a onestop shop for everything from the time you say ‘Yes!’ until you say ‘I do!’
– Ambiance is everything. Decorations, flowers and centerpieces all heighten the ambiance in your venue. Amanda Mueller at Dress It Up Floral loves to challenge the status quo, bringing personal motifs into her creations. From red roses in winter to orchids in summer, fresh flowers not only enhance a room aesthetically, they smell amazing. of curls or a vibrant hue to accent your radiant glow, you want your hair to suit you and your day. The experts at Nude Sugar Bar will take care of everything for all your personal grooming needs.
Mobile Makeup – The beauties at Brushed are not only committed to getting you looking your best on your big day, they will also come to you. Take liberties when possible to save time. They are in the business of romance, one piece of jewellery at a time; from their incredible selection of engagement rings to custom jewellery and everything in between, it’s no surprise they are Winnipeg’s first choice in custom jewellery. Specializing in one-of-a-kind statement pieces, Sutton Smithworks is the destination for personalized service, quality craftsmanship, superior selection and custom crafted jewellery. In fact, they are the perfect complement to any upcoming wedding, providing their customers with the jewellery they imagine. “Together we help our customers create works of art that symbolize their love,” Peggy explains. “We sit down and talk about their vision, and from there we get to work; we send a rendering of what the piece will look like. Our customers can then make adjustments before it’s finalized.” Their beautiful showroom demonstrates the precision and attention to detail in all their jewellery. “We’re local,” says Peggy. “We understand commitment and we appreciate beautiful things.” Best of all, they also offer customized service. Every woman wants to show the world she’s getting married. When a gentleman purchases an engagement ring from Sutton Smithworks, they know the woman receiving the ring will not want to wait to wear it. hotography is a large part of who he is. But what enhances Shawn Fillion’s creativity is the breadth to which he experiences life. He travels, prepares gourmet meals and shoots. Photos, that is — plain and simply. “I like getting lost in culture,” Fillion states. That much is evident in his work. For the most part, Fillion focuses on people, his specialty being weddings. He shoots destination weddings, upscale weddings and weddings that take
place in wheat fields. But he also does portrait photography, special events and corporate engagements. “The key to a successful shoot is setting expectations,” says Fillion. “Fit is everything.” In other words, the alignment between client and photographer can make all the difference in exceptional photographs. “Let’s face it, there are plenty of photographers for hire. I stress the connection between myself and the client.” Beyond connection, Fillion offers a few tips for prospective clients and future brides.
1 Meet with several photographers to see who you are most closely matched with. “Weddings can be a stressful day. Don’t make it harder than it has to be. Choose a photographer whose personality complements your own. I’m very open; I suggest and make suggestions. That way, communication is clear and everybody is on the same page.” 2 Know what you want out of your photos. Do you envision an intimate look into your day? Do you want staged photos? Do you want pictures with your families? ABOVE Shawn Fillion

Are candids important to you? More importantly, be sure to communicate your intentions with your photographer. 3 With a connection and a clear vision on the memories you hope to capture, create a shot list including all of the essential moments you imagine with the most important people in your life. But be realistic. Fillion cautions, “We always try to get every shot perfect, but know that sometimes that’s not always possible.” 4 Allow enough time for the photography to unfold but also the travel to and from
locations. “One of the biggest problems I see is when a bride doesn’t allot enough time. Enjoy the day, don’t rush and most importantly smile.” 5 Consider your surroundings. Grassy shots in a meadow are not possible on the prairies in January. Consider your setting, the season and the time of day. “I always recommend an indoor location as a back up option as well. You can’t be too prepared.” The greatest asset of a photographer is being able to roll with the day. The day
can change from minute to minute, a limo could break down, there could be a blizzard, but that’s just life. A great photographer will source key spots and make light of tough situations, bringing out the best in his or her subjects.” Fillion is client focused and grounded, a true subject of life. “Look at my work, see what lights my fire. If you like my approach, give me a call.” For more information or to meet Shawn, call or visit his website at www. pepperapple.com.

They can also help with the social side of the things including drink tickets, double rolls, silent auction tickets, grand prize tickets, banners, wrist bands, cello wrap for prize baskets and yes, even the social tickets. For wedding favours they have beer koozies, shot glasses and golf balls that can be personalized for your special day. Owner Brian Johnson and his family have embraced the wedding theme in their store including a separate website to show
everything they can provide when planning a wedding. They also have a number of theme collections to choose from, be it a more traditional bridal tapestry theme, to the delicate “Winter Finery,” and even specialty themes like camouflage. “We try to help people through that stressful planning stage. It’s worth it to see the smile on the bride’s face when she sees the invitations,” says Johnson. Johnson advises brides to get in touch with him as soon as they have booked the date and venue to prevent any backlog during busy seasons, requesting a minimum of two months notice before the wedding

just to be safe. There are no appointments necessary, so brides can drop in anytime to browse through their four catalogues of invitation styles as well as their own custom invitations to find the perfect look. Johnson takes pride in the store’s friendly atmosphere, saying the oneon-one service is what catches people’s attention. They always have at least two people on staff so customers rarely have to wait to speak with someone. Another bonus is they can look at all the items in store and see what they actually look like instead of ordering from a catalogue online. This family-run shop offers great products made right in Winnipeg.
After working in the printing industry for many years, Johnson applied for a job at Labelle’s in 1998. When he was offered the job, the previous owners asked if he would be interested in buying the place. Johnson accepted and quickly made the place his own in a new location easily accessible from downtown. hen it comes to floral arrangements, Amanda Mueller leans toward a more modern and natural — rather than traditional — approach. “Our shop is designed that way as well,” she says, owner of Dress It Up Floral Design and Gift Boutique. “Grabbing the natural elements and bringing them indoors it’s like a timeless garden — warm and inviting.” While the use of moss, willow and wheat are common in Mueller’s pieces, she never forgoes creative accents, either. “It’s all about adding that extra bit of something to ‘Dress It Up,’ whether it’s mesh, sparkles or a decoration you wouldn’t find elsewhere. and up-to-date with today’s trends and styles.” Dress It Up Floral Design specializes in wedding arrangements and special events. The business began in Amanda Mueller’s home. For as long as she can recall, she’s had an interest and a passion for designing with flowers. After receiving an education at the Canadian Institute of Floral Design in Toronto, Mueller went on to create even more elaborate centerpieces and eventually purchased her own retail space in November 2013. Since then, she’s been creating a myriad of arrangements for special occasions, weddings, anniversaries and funerals — all the while, building up a satisfied and happy clientele. “Shortly after opening,
a family friend passed away,” says Mueller. For her funeral, she created an arrangement made from their personal favourites to memorialize the family’s loss. It was an arrangement that stood out to Mueller in many ways because it embodied the work she continues to do today —making each piece its own. Dress It Up Floral Design and Gift Boutique is a proud family business, with Mueller’s husband, sister, parents and even grandparents helping out in the shop. “My Baba especially loves helping me set up for events,” says Mueller. Dress It Up Events is an extension of Dress It Up Floral Design and Gift Boutique, with backdrops, lighting, ceiling swags, chair covers, tablecloths, napkins and vase
rentals, as well as home décor for every season. Mueller is also more than happy to accommodate a client’s own heirlooms and pieces into her work. “I remember a client’s grandmother was very much into collecting pins and brooches; I incorporated her hobby into a three-piece floral arrangement for the grandmother’s funeral.” Mueller’s easy-going nature and flair for unique designs helps put clients at ease. With so many options for flowers, designs, vases and extras, it’s important to help the client make the right choice. “I tell my clients to contact me whenever they need to.” She even gives out her personal cell so clients can text her with questions and orders. “Treating clients like friends is really important to me. I want them to be a part
of the process because the arrangement is made for someone who is important to them.” While Mueller wants to eventually expand into a larger shop, she has no desire to leave the East St. Paul area (located half a block north from the perimeter on Henderson Highway). “Our clients will tell us ‘we’re really glad you’re in the neighbourhood,’ which is heartwarming because we love what we do.” RIGHT Amanda Mueller, owner.

Thanks to a vibrant and highly-skilled team, nurturing that beauty has never been easier or healthier. At Colors Beauty and Wellness, the team’s love for natural beauty and total wellness is only surpassed by the love you celebrate on your big day. Nestled in the heart of Fort Garry, Colors Beauty and Wellness is a full service salon dedicated to exceptional customer service in an earth-friendly environment. “We believe our salon is not just a place to come to,” says owner Joanne Rempel. “It’s a place to come back to.” After 30 years in the business, Joanne knew the industry was saturated with products harmful to humans and the environment. She also knew that while she may not be able to influence the beauty industry globally, she could do something locally in her own salon, which only carries lines based in certified organic pharmaceutical grade aloe or have reduced harmful effects on the environment. Her search for quality products that protect the earth led her to Eufora International, a California-based company that has built its brand on providing top performance,

Her credentials as a visionary colourist prompted a further partnership with Eufora when she was invited to Italy to assist the company in the development of their new, high-performance colour line. EuforaColor is a premium product with minimal negative impact, says Joanne. Its unique formula allows stylists to custom mix colours that are vibrant and long-lasting. Guests notice their hair feels softer and looks shinier immediately after the first treatment. The marriage of beauty and wellness is equally important in other Colors salon services. This talented team offers manicures, facials, makeup applications and a variety of wellness treatments – everything you need to be refreshed and ready for your walk down the aisle. Recently, Colors added two special services to its aesthetics line: • Body Ritual Massage is a deep tissue massage that cleanses, lifts, firms, balances energy and purges toxins. • Therapeutic Facial Massage, ideal for mature skin, will help minimize and prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. As a full service salon, have one of our talented stylists customize a cut and color for you that will have you turning heads on your wedding day. We want to be there every step of the way to ensure your big day goes off without a hitch! “Our team can design the look you want to feel rejuvenated and radiant,” says Joanne. “Our goal is to exceed your expectations with exceptional guest service.” Read more about Joanne’s hair and beauty tips at www.modernsalon.com Colors Beauty and Wellness 1072 Pembina Highway Winnipeg, MB 204.477.9723 colors@mymts.net www.colorsforhair.com

Dipped in Sugar – All-Natural Hair Removal

n today’s world, a woman has enough on the go — especially if that woman is a bride-to-be. The last thing she should have to worry about is hair removal.
For more than a decade, Lindsey Peterson has been impressed with body sugaring as a method for hair removal. Realizing the need for a dedicated sugaring service for women on the go, she sought to fill that need by opening Nude Sugar Bar. Unlike

most multi-service salons or spas, Nude Sugar Bar has just the one focus. “Sugaring is our sole service, we don’t do anything else. So you’re not going to come in and get your hair dyed or your nails done,” Peterson says. Our only concern is perfectly smooth, hairless skin that is super-soft and luxurious.” Unlike daily shaving, which can result in
unsightly, often uncomfortable razor burn, sugaring is all-natural. The paste is literally made from sugar, water and lemon — and acts as an exfoliator for your skin. Unlike waxing, the sugaring paste is warm, not hot, and will not scald or remove layers of skin. The paste is removed in the direction the hair grows, as opposed to against it, which is typical with waxing. The results are less irritation and a more complete removal of the hair down to the root, Peterson explains. Hair grows back softer and thinner after about four weeks — the perfect amount of time to be silky-smooth and hair-free for not only the week leading up to your wedding but also your honeymoon! “Sugaring for brides and bridal parties can be planned to work within their schedules,” says Peterson, noting it can be a feel-good service for the bride and bridesmaids prior to the bachelorette party. “We know how busy you are at such an important time; the last thing you should worry about is body hair. We can have you in and out quickly, with desirable results, ready for your big day!” With a long winter ahead, Nude Sugar Bar can be especially helpful if you plan on booking a winter vacation or attending a destination wedding. Whether you’re planning to travel soon after your wedding day or just want to continue your next stage of life with silky, smooth skin — sugaring is the answer. “Nude Sugar Bar will leave your skin polished and glowing,” says Peterson. To enhance your beautiful skin, call to make an appointment today. Whether you are new to sugaring or include it in your personal self-care regime, natural soft skin is essential for busy women on the go.

Bijou Photosbooths strip designs are never the same, so they are unique to each event. “We work with our clients to personalize the photo strips themselves, incorporating their theme, or colour scheme, a logo or name — whatever they would like to make it their own,” the owner says, noting photo booths are great for a variety of events, from corporate functions to birthday parties.

ast month, Fine Lifestyles sales manager Melissa Tannahill attended an event to support the fight against cancer. It was beautiful, fun and full of truly compassionate people. This year’s 23rd annual Guardian Angel Benefit for Women’s Cancer was a Hollywoodglam fashion show and cocktail party with proceeds going to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. “We are the only charity that fundraises exclusively for CancerCare Manitoba and this event specifically supports the awareness, research and patient treatment for women’s cancers,” says Annitta Stenning, president and CEO of CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. “In other words, all funds stay in our province to help sustain all the different components of CancerCare. We work to prevent, detect as early as possible, enhance breakthrough research, provide state-of-the-art treatment and support for patients and families. It is a very comprehensive process.” According to this year’s Guardian Angel chair Ida Albo, one of the highlights of the event is always the fashion show. The theme varies annually, but for more than two decades, hundreds of cancer survivors have walked the runways in celebration. This past year saw 31 inspiring models, a reminder of the importance of such an event. “The goal is to raise awareness as we fundraise,” notes Stenning. Many people, including men, support the event because they are either grateful survivors who really want to give back, are experiencing incredible care themselves, or are thankful because someone they love has benefitted from one of the many facets of CancerCare. In fact, it is unusual to not know someone who has been affected by cancer.
Since its inception, the Guardian Angel Benefit has raised more than $5 million — money that exclusively supports women’s cancer projects and programs at CancerCare Manitoba. It began 23 years ago with two women, one of whom had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Over all these years, hundreds of dedicated volunteers have organized the event and helped it grow from supporting breast cancer to all types of women’s cancers. The annual event, always in October, is a first-class affair that attracts a gamut of Manitoba sponsors and always a wellknown guest speaker with a compelling cancer story of their own. This year supermodel Emme shared her story. Recent speakers have included Fran Dresher and Cynthia Nixon. “The fashion show has evolved from professional models wearing haute couture to exclusively survivor models wearing locally-accessible fashion, and even male survivor models,” says Stenning with a smile. “The audience is comprised of people touched by cancer, proud family members and dedicated supporters. It is a pretty special, emotional time to support and celebrate.” The event has an incredible impact on some very key projects. Mobile MaMMography “Looking back over the years, one of the early initiatives was to support the mobile mammography program. Trained professionals from the screening program were provided with a van and the latest mammography technology to reach rural and remote areas. We have even put the machine on a plane,” says Stenning. “The investment in providing screening access has saved lives. The Guardian Angels were instrumental in launching

n our last issue, we explored good habits to increase overall wellness from sunrise to nightfall. With extreme weather on its way, harsh temperatures are the perfect opportunity to hole up at home with an open mind and some new habits to carry you into a new calendar year.
Despite the fact that the healing properties of oils have been recognized and used for ages, it wasn’t until the 19th century that the term aromatherapy was coined to describe this method of infusing the air and body with natural plant extracts to create balance and promote wellness of the mind, body and spirit.
Aromatherapy is widely talked about today but certainly not news in the world of alternative health. In fact, people have been using oils for more than 6,000 years. The Romans and ancient Greeks and ancient Egyptians all used essential oils. In fact, the Egyptians were some of the first people to use aromatic essential oils extensively in medical practice, beauty treatment, food preparation and in religious ceremonies. Frankincense, sandalwood, myrrh and cinnamon were considered very valuable cargo along caravan trade routes and were sometimes exchanged for gold.
Essential oils are extracted from natural sources such as plants, grasses, fruit peels and all parts of trees. While their scents can be intoxicating, it is critical to invest in high-grade, pure oils and keep them stored in dark, glass jars in order to prevent damage from heat and light.

Essential oils can be diffused, inhaled, applied to the skin, incorporated in a massage therapy (deleted comma) or taken internally for medicinal purposes. While there are many noteworthy essential oils and blends, here are the basics for anyone looking to delve into the world of oils.

Lavender is the first and most commonly used essential oil, often associated with luxurious linens and upscale spas. But, more than indulgent, lavender is known for its anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, pain-relieving, antihistamine, antitumor and antimicrobial properties. In fact, lavender oil is a natural healer of the skin and can be used to alleviate irritation from bee stings, sunburns and rashes. Lemon oil is not only uplifting to the senses; it is also a powerful antiseptic, with antifungal and antiviral properties. Great for energy, this energizing oil should be kept on hand to add to a glass of water, a favourite recipe or a hot mug of tea to soothe a sore throat. Peppermint oil is a staple when it comes to digestive health and can be used to ease many conditions from heartburn to motion sickness. Feeling tired? Peppermint oil is invigorating. It can help reduce fever, improve oral health and improve digestion. This is the perfect oil to take when travelling.
4
Tea Tree oil is ideal for cleaning, sanitizing and detoxifying — it’s a popular skin treatment and a great addition to any medicine cabinet. From foot funguses to blemishes, tea tree is a medicine cabinet must have.
Oregano oil has become quite popular in recent years, in fact, more mainstream at health food and supplement stores. It is a well-known oil for boosting the immune system and speeding recovery when fighting airborne illnesses. It’s great in salad dressings or on the bottom of your feet to fight infections. Oregano oil is best diluted with another oil, such as almond or coconut oil, and as it is potent enough to battle food poisoning. Frankincense is known as the wonder oil, ideal for serious healing, spiritual well-being and supporting the body to fight a gamut of illnesses. It makes for an intoxicating room freshener, is a perfect skin elixir and has been known to improve negative moods. Eucalyptus oil is easily identified for its refreshing scent but it is much more than an odour eliminator; it is also excellent for chest congestion and helps ease inflammation when used with a compress. Eating well, staying active and seeking options to support a balanced life really maximize longevity and peace of mind. These seven oils are simply an introduction to aromatherapy and one part of the many alternative health options that exist today. Blending traditional medicine with old world wisdom is becoming more and more commonplace, just as blending essential oils for maximum performance and olfactory enlightenment.

cancer diagnosis is overwhelming and often brings with it many tough decisions. Naturopathic doctors aim to inform patients and encourage them to make a choice that is right for them. By discussing expected outcomes and side effects of both conventional and naturopathic treatments, patients can feel empowered to make decisions concerning their treatment. With the Internet touting many different “natural cancer cures” it can be confusing to discern what is real and what is a scam. Naturopathic doctors have eight years of medical training and ensure their treatment recommendations are supported by scientific studies and clinical trials. Am I able to work with a naturopathic doctor if I already have an oncologist? Yes you can. Naturopathic doctors routinely contact their patient’s oncologists, with consent, to ensure that all members of the patient’s health care team are working together and properly informed. It has been shown time and time again patients receiving naturopathic care along side their conventional oncology treatments have the best outcomes.

What can I expect from my first appointment with a naturopathic doctor (ND)? During your first visit, your ND will want to gather as much information as possible about you. This includes details of your health history, lifestyle and any other treatments you have done or plan to do. Your ND will also do a symptom oriented physical exam. Finally a treatment plan is discussed with you. What treatment plan should I expect from my ND for my cancer? Expect to receive an individualized, holistic treatment plan which may include: specific dietary recommendations, exercise goals, oral nutritional and herbal supplements that have been proven to kill cancer cells and/or support healthy cells, intravenous therapy treatments and a discussion of mind-body-spirit connection. What type of diet changes should I expect from my ND? Dietary recommendations vary depending on the type and staging of your cancer, and whether you are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation.
Typically, a healthy, well-balanced diet that is low in simple carbohydrates and refined sugars is best. Your ND may suggest that you include foods that have shown a positive impact in fighting cancer, and avoid foods that have been shown to encourage cancer development. If necessary, an individualized dietary plan may be implemented to combat inflammation, infection or extreme weight loss. What is High Dose Intravenous Vitamin C (HDIVC) Therapy and what are the side effects? Vitamin C in low doses is a powerful anti-oxidant, but in high doses given intravenously, it acts as a pro-oxidant. It has been shown to kill cancer cells, reduce inflammation and exert a protective quality on healthy cells in the face of chemotherapy. HDIVC is tolerated very well, and most patients experience increased energy and improved recovery time post chemotherapy. Your ND will run screening blood tests prior to you receiving HDIVC. HDIVC is not compatible with all chemotherapeutic agents or radiation, and so may be recommended apart from your conventional treatments. What role do naturopathic doctors play in cancer care? When it comes to cancer care the role of the ND is varied. We provide treatment recommendations for those going through chemotherapy and radiation for those who wish to minimize side effects and maximize the therapeutic effects. We also put together cancer prevention plans for those that have a strong family history of cancer as well as detoxification plans for those that have just completed chemotherapy and radiation.

What is Vision Therapy? The best way to think of VT is that it’s like physical therapy for the eyes and the brain. It’s a scientifically-proven, nonsurgical treatment for many common visual problems including lazy eyes, crossed eyes, double vision, convergence insufficiency and other reading or learning disabilities.

A
lesser known Optometry service, Vision Therapy, or VT for short, is one reason why Dr. Dawn Dunford, president and senior optometrist at Advanced Vision Centres chose to go into optometry. In fact, she even chose her school based on the strength of its VT program.
There are two interesting things to note about the conditions treated by VT. First of all, many people think our eyes work “right out of the box”. Unfortunately, we don’t always just open them and have them work perfectly. Secondly, many people with major vision issues score fine on regular 20/20 eye exams. That’s because a routine exam is concerned with whether or not you need glasses and the health of your eyes — it doesn’t check the focusing, teaming or tracking system in-depth. While VT is not a direct treatment for learning disabilities, it can be a means of correcting the underlying problems that can cause many related issues. When a vision problem interferes with reading, it’s very difficult to learn. Many well-meaning parents try to make their children study more, or harder, in the hopes of improving their grades, but it doesn’t matter how hard the child tries if their visual skills are compromised. WhaT’s inVolVed in a VT program? VT involves a series of vision “exercises” performed under a doctor’s guidance. The program is individualized to fit the specific needs of the patient and is conducted both inoffice and through homework to further reinforce improvements. The exercises are prescribed to aid
patients in developing or improving their core visual skills, and are meant to improve visual comfort and efficiency. Specifically, they help a patient process visual information correctly. While every VT program is highly individualized, my experience with thousands of VT patients over the past 15+ years ensures most courses of treatment can be completed within 10 to 15 sessions. (Amblyopia — or, lazy eye — can usually be treated in just a few sessions and cost the family very little, as it is covered by Manitoba Health.) In the US, many insurance companies cover a variety of VT treatments but few insurers do so in Canada, so it is often an out-ofpocket expense. For the vast majority of my patients, the cost is less than $2,000, and most often ranges between $1,200 and $1,500. It is made more affordable by charging by the session, rather than a large lump sum payment. VT is used for people of all ages. A growing part of my practice is focused on people who have suffered traumatic brain Injuries, usually in car accidents or from falls, who need to relearn visual skills. Many top athletes also use forms of Sports VT to improve physical performance. VT is for everyone, from children with learning disabilities to adults who have suffered an accident. Regardless the nature, we can get your eyes back in focus today. For more information, check out www.covd.org.

What Makes Specialist Orthodontics... Special?
Dr. Tim Dumore Dr. Dumore & Team 2541 Portage Avenue 204.832.3910 drtimbo@drdumore.com www.drdumore.com

he question sometimes arises from patients, “Why should I go to a specialist for orthodontic care if my dentist can do orthodontic work? Though not an unreasonable question, it is worth exploring several considerations when deciding who should tend to your orthodontic needs. Would-be dentists and orthodontists start off the same, typically with three years study at an undergraduate university. Entrance into dental school is very competitive and only a small portion of applicants are accepted. Dental school is then another four years of full-time study in the many areas that
52

comprise dental education. To become an orthodontist, another three years of full-time university study at an accredited graduate orthodontic program is required after dental school, for a total of 10 years training. The number of placements available in orthodontic programs is very limited and competition to get in is stiff. This is reflected by the fact that of the approximately 700 dentists in Manitoba, only about 25 are specialist orthodontists. So what does that mean to you? Your dentist will typically take care of your overall dental health by examining your oral cavity to detect any problems and providing you with treatments such as fillings, cleanings, crowns or bridges, gum treatments, implants, root canal treatments and basic orthodontics. The training that dental students receive in school is aimed at providing a basic background in understanding orthodontic problems and limited treatments. Dentists can increase their knowledge in orthodontics through continuing education courses, but the quality and duration of such offerings varies wildly. By contrast, orthodontic training allows the specialist to diagnose and treat issues related to the alignment and bite of the teeth. Because orthodontists see many cases each year, they become much more efficient than dentists at correcting
alignment and bite issues. The reality is that some dentists do absolutely no orthodontic work and others do quite a lot. Some dentists’ experience helps them identify problems in order to refer a patient to a specialist. If your dentist offers orthodontic services, you may wish to ask what additional training he or she has undertaken to improve their understanding of orthodontic problems. Very often, dentists and orthodontists work together as part of an interdisciplinary team that may include other specialists. For example, the orthodontist can move the teeth to allow the dentist to restore teeth more conservatively. In other situations, the orthodontist moves the teeth to allow an oral surgeon to optimally correct jaw position, followed by restorative work by the dentist, and maybe some gum work by a periodontist. It would be difficult for a dentist alone to be able to provide all these treatments at the same high standards as a team with specialized skills. What an orthodontist can offer is the benefit of specialized training to determine what problems may exist with your alignment or bite, and the best ways to correct them. It`s what orthodontists like Dr. Tim Dumore and his team do!

“I ran a home daycare for 18 years.” When a break in babies came, she stepped back and thought about making a change. “I had to decide which direction to go in, a new group of children or a new adventure.” After thorough research on the best, most viable and reputable franchises, she arrived at Tan FX - the Ness location was looking for new ownership. Lorraine knew she needed to be around people, she needed a good location – one with ample parking and
she knew she wanted to align herself with a company she could stand behind. After a discussion with her husband Greg, her family and an agreement from her son, Kris McLean to come on board, she signed the papers. That was five years ago. She kept a few staff to maintain regularity and opened her doors and her heart. Within a year she had given up all other commitments and was full time in the salon.

Not enough people say nice things.” She is transparent and willing to go out of her way for each one of her guests. “If I can make you smile, than I’ve made my own day,” says Lorraine, creating smiles all day long with complements, hugs, a little bit of chocolate and a lot of humour. Her humour and goodwill do not go unnoticed; a pepperoni pizza arrived the same day she joked about Jo’s Pizza. At Tan FX, you will feel like family Lorraine will see to it. In fact, when she sees friends from the salon she hasn’t seen in a while, they pick up like no time has passed, everybody knows her grandchildren and she knows as much about each one of her guests. And that is just the way she likes it –
running a business parallel to how she lives her life. “I do all of these things just because I want to. And if you want to be part of that goodness and have a little fun, come on down.” If you live next door or run a large corporation that matters not to Lorraine. ith her new album, Shine On, and recent U.S. and Canadian tours, beloved singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan is looking to the future with hopeful optimism. “All my albums are postcards of where I am emotionally in my life,” McLachlan tells Fine Lifestyles in an interview just weeks before leaving on her cross-country fall tour. “I tend to tell stories about my own experiences through music. I feel like I have worked really hard to come back to a place where I feel strong and whole again, and Shine On reflects that.” In just a few short years, McLachlan faced a crisis of identity with a divorce, the death of her father, a split from her manager of more than two decades, and a failed reprisal of Lilith Fair. With a near complete collapse of her support system, she released Laws of Illusion in 2010. It was punctuated with the anguish and grief of that period of her life, a stark contrast to Shine On. After the chaotic

period of change, the artist has found light at the end of the tunnel and is embracing life with renewed enthusiasm, drinking up every moment. The dedicated mother of two girls — India Ann Sushil, 12, and Taja Summer, seven —McLachlan credits her children for keeping her afloat through the hard times. “My girls are my biggest and most beautiful distractions. I was very lucky to have them when I was fairly established and could take time off to just be a mom. It has opened up my heart exponentially and I get to see the world through their eyes,” says McLachlan. For the vocalist and musician who has sold more than 40 million records, won three Grammys and eight Junos, McLachlan counts her Vancouverbased Sarah McLachlan School of Music among her greatest achievements. The free after-school music program draws droves of youth, sparking their creativity and nurturing a love of music. There are almost 700 kids in the program this year, making a very real change in their lives.

Drawing inspiration from Cat Stevens, Simon and Garfunkle, Willie Nelson, Joni Mitchell and other North American folk music, as well as Gaelic and Irish music, McLachlan has developed a unique sound all her own — a sound she has stayed true to throughout her career. She says there will be no pop or jazz albums in her future just to stay on a Top 10 list. “The best advice I ever got about my career was from Annie Lennox when I opened for her in New York many years ago. She said, ‘Don’t let anyone sway your heart.’ It’s advice I really took to heart,” remembers McLachlan. This year has seen McLachlan’s return to the electric guitar, releasing in her words a more wild side to herself. Being proficient in both guitar and piano also gives the artist the ability to work through songs with different instruments, often creating those coveted breakthrough moments in the writing process. “There are no mathematical equations to finishing a song, it’s different every time. The important thing is to stay open and knowing when to quit.”
“I feel very lucky to have been doing this for 26 years and that people still want to hear my work. There are a lot of ways to view success, I am my own harshest critic and knowing I’ve done my best, worked as hard as I could and was true to myself is important,” says McLachlan. The artist’s eighth studio album, Shine On contains song dedications to McLachlan’s father (Song for My Father and Broken Heart), her daughters (Beautiful Girl) and boyfriend, former NHL player Geoff Courtall (Flesh and Blood), whom she met at a Sarah McLachlan School of Music fundraiser. Shine On also includes a song that was originally about bullying and the
62

strength of the female spirit, which later became an ode to education activist Malala Yousafza, who survived a Taliban assassination attempt in 2012. While on tour, McLachlan returns to her childhood home of Halifax, the scene of relentless childhood bullying and her musical awakening. At the tender age of four, McLachlan began learning to play the ukulele and taking voice lessons. “When I was a kid I wanted to be Joan Baez, my mom always had her music playing. I was drawn to beautiful melodies. I loved the feeling music gave me; it lifted me and nourished me. I was always singing for as long as I can remember, it was always in my head,” says McLachlan.
Though writing her own music takes more time (there are often three to seven years between albums), the end product is well worth the wait. It creates a more authentic sound for her fans that she loves to share. “Performing live is a culmination of all the blood, sweat and tears I have shed spending months, if not years, on something. Writing is a very isolated experience, so it’s great to be able to finally share it with people. There is a unique energy that is created playing live.” At 46, the artist has seen a lot of shifts in her life and in the music scene as a whole, but she has stayed true to herself and her sound through it all. Looking forward, McLachlan is planning to make the most out of every second she has. “If I am lucky my life is half over. I have been taking a good look at my life and thinking how I want to live it. I want to do as much as I can, have as much fun as I can, live as much as I can, love as hard as I can and give as much as I can. I want to shine, not just endure, to suck the marrow out of everyday. When you put forth that energy and light you get so much back,” says McLachlan.

or more than a decade, Inferno’s Bistro has drawn clientele from across the city for the restaurant’s lively atmosphere, award-winning patio, and unique cuisine. The menu features delicious French-Mediterranean and Asian-influenced dishes created by owner and executive chef Fern Kirouac and his team. In 2012, when a location became available on Academy Road, the idea arose to open a sister restaurant to the St. Boniface bistro; Kirouac’s son Chris, who managed Inferno’s, took on the new project. “The opportunity came along and I had to explore it,” says Chris. “We have fallen in love with the space.” Featuring rich, dark wood and warm lighting, Inferno’s On Academy offers three seating options: a 46-seat lounge, a 36-seat dining room, and their recent expansion, a 50-seat dining space on the opposite side of the bar. (In warmer months, the 24-seat sidewalk patio is also available.) Diners walk past the restaurant’s open kitchen as they enter, where head chef Chris Chornopyski and his team create the gourmet food Inferno’s prides itself on. While initially the Academy location’s menu was a departure from Inferno Bistro’s fare, loyal foodies will be pleased to know they now offer long-time Bistro fan favourites. Mussels and fries, lobster potstickers, prawns au pernod, and a lamb shank with maple balsamic reduction are well-known crowd pleasers. Both the Academy and the Bistro locations offer a vast selection of daily features Chris says are like a menu of their own, with diners tempted by the ever-changing soups, appetizers, and entree items. Desserts, for both locations, are made by Fern Kirouac. He has perfected signature sweets to round out any of Inferno’s meals. The peanut butter dumpling, a recent appetizer special at Inferno’s On Academy, is an example of the kitchen’s creative flair, mixing the best of Bistro flavour with a taste all its own. “We strive to give people a lot of choice so they can try different things,” says Chris. “The neighbourhood has welcomed us as a unique place on Academy, and people love the food.”

Fern and Chris Kirouac are part of a family of French restaurateurs who have owned three restaurants in St. Boniface including Inferno’s Bistro. Fern began learning the trade at a young age under the guidance of his chef father, Fern senior. While Chris loves to cook, he says he gravitates to the people side of the business. He was on the Inferno’s Bistro team since it opened in 2003, and has relished the opportunity to continue the Inferno’s name at its Academy Road location. “I’m proud of my family’s history and what we accomplished at Inferno’s Bistro,” says Chris. “Inferno’s On Academy is the same flavour, but different.” While the cuisine alone makes Inferno’s On Academy well worth a visit, the entire dining experience is what makes the restaurant stand out. Its The carefully selected wine list offers an array of varietals by the glass (eight reds, six whites, and a rosé), and diners have the opportunity to sample several by mixing and matching a custom wine flight. The small staff of personable and professional servers offer food and drink menu guidance when necessary, helping diners choose from the extensive, affordable mouth-watering options to create an impressive dining adventure. “Inferno’s has been busy since day one,” says Chris, “and we’ve created a tight-knit team that works well together.” Inferno’s On Academy is an excellent option for large groups and private parties, as its two dining rooms and variety of seating options can accommodate a range of dining experiences. Both dining areas are available for private functions. The Inferno’s team can customize your party’s dining style, offering passaround appetizers, a sit-down dinner, or both. Inferno’s On Academy is open six days a week (closed Sundays), starting at 11 a.m. for lunch and 3:30 p.m. for dinner. Menu items are also available as take-out — a popular option among the staff of neighbouring businesses, who regularly order sandwiches to go, and also love to swing by for an afterwork beverage. Whether you visited Inferno’s On Academy when it first opened two years ago, or have yet to experience the location, now is the time to dine. With its finely-tuned menu, relaxedyet-sophisticated ambience and new dining room debut, the restaurant is set to make its mark on the Winnipeg dining scene, creating a new Inferno’s era. Recent acts include John K. Samson, of The Weakerthans; Calgary’s Viet Cong, a new and up-and-coming band; and local performer Greg MacPherson. CD release parties, Mondays’ Vinyl Nights and Smithfits events — featuring punk, new wave and Brit pop — are all part of the daily music programming schedule. According to co-owner Donavan Robinson, the idea for The Good Will began when Noel Bernier invited him to look at a potential property for a social club. Soon after, Robinson
approached Abi Torquato and Anthony Kowalczyk to create the unique concept. “Most people that walk in get it right away,” says Kowalczyk. “It’s a social club, a place to talk with your friends, see bands, drink good beer and eat good pizza. “I love it when people walk in and say this place is beautiful, comfortable, and well thought out.” The Good Will exudes a kind of hip utilitarian minimalism with a 35-foot communal table made of two-by-fours, abstract art by local artist Kenneth Lavalee and Henry Milleresque pieces from the middle of the last century. Vintage chairs, retro pinball machines and a collection of VHS movies available to watch on the big screen, add to the overall decor. It was a perfect fit for A Little Pizza Heaven, which started in Osborne Village in 2005 serving late night New York style slices. In addition to its second location at The Good Will, A Little Pizza Heaven has a pizza truck that caters to music festivals and events. Known for its garlicky crusts, this favourite pizzeria has even delivered the official pizza of the Juno Awards. The owners include nine Winnipeggers, age 24 to 45. In addition to Robinson, Kowalczyk, Bernier and Torquato, the partners include Cam Leoppky, David Schellenberg, Tyler Sneezby, Tim Hoover and Jack Moleshi — all offering wide-ranging skills that include restaurant expertise, audio engineering, DJing and brand creation. They’ve made The Good Will and A Little Pizza Heaven part of a supportive Winnipeg community and want to share in the growth of the burgeoning neighbourhood. Robinson says they admire their neighbours and feel they are part of a bigger movement of entrepreneurs trying to do something new, creating camaraderie. “Everyone comes out to support each other and wants to see each other succeed,” says Robinson. The Good Will is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday to Friday and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Don’t be alarmed this holiday season if you see 12 baby polar bears scurry across the stage during the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s annual production of the Nutcracker. “
W
e are excited to introduce our new furry characters to the stage,” shares RWB Artistic Director André Lewis. “Nutcracker has become a holiday favourite and family tradition to many in our audiences and we hope that our new bears find a place in their hearts.” Along with 12 baby polar bears this year, there will also be a new friend for beloved Nutcracker bear Filbert in the form of an adult polar bear to engage in various mischief’s throughout the beloved production.
Longtime RWB costume designer Paul Daigle will design the costumes with help from Filbert’s Furry Friends — a fundraising campaign launched by the RWB to build these costumes. Filbert’s Furry Friends is an invitation to the public to join in bringing these characters to life. Suggested donations start at $20 — and those who donate $250 or more by Dec. 15, will receive an invitation to a Cupcake Holiday Party hosted by Filbert and a few of his furry friends. For those who aim to complete a polar bear costume, a $2,000 donation will do just that — with an array of exciting holiday surprises in return.
Once the costumes are completed, 12 students from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s School Recreational Division will don the furry costumes in a brand new Nutcracker scene complete with new choreography for Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s timeless score. The RWB’s Nutcracker is a holiday delight and staple for Winnipeggers at the Centennial Concert Hall. With the score performed by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, RWB dancers will pirouette and brisé through endearing Canadian moments such as a snowy pond hockey game and a scene on Parliament Hill.

For residents in Vancouver, Victoria and Nanaimo, the RWB’s Nutcracker will be touring in the beginning of December — taking not only a wonderful opportunity to introduce the polar bears to the rest of Canada, but also act as ambassadors for the province of Manitoba. “With the addition of the new Polar Bears, we can help promote experiences, like Assiniboine Park Zoo’s Journey to Churchill to audiences everywhere,” explains RWB executive director, Jeff Herd. Founded in 1939, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet holds the double distinction of being Canada’s premier ballet company and one of the oldest ballet companies in North America. Its versatility, technical excellence and captivating style have garnered both critical and audience acclaim from around the globe — including Santa’s, who we’re sure, enjoys the Nutcracker as much as we do. And whether it’s for an early Christmas present or family event, don’t miss out on purchasing tickets for the RWB’s Nutcracker. Curtains open on Dec. 20, 22, 23 and 27 at 7 p.m. with matinee performances on Dev. 20, 21, 27 and 28 at 2 p.m.. Tickets are available through the RWB customer service office or can be purchased online at www.rwb.org.

BRIDGE OF THE
AMERICAS By Ken Beattie, NPD, Ph.D., Enrichment Speaker Photos courtesy Oceania Cruises
T
he weather encountered during a Canadian January is often less than balmy! Indeed, this may be why so many Canadians are found aboard cruise ships sailing exotic lands, enjoying the warm weather of the tropics. I for one will be soaking up the sun from Jan. 16 to Feb. 3, 2015 aboard yet another exotic adventure with Oceania Cruise Line’s beautiful Regatta.
As the enrichment lecturer aboard, my responsibility is to enhance the already spectacular 18-day itinerary with itineraryspecific regular presentations, related to plants and peoples of the regions we visit. This voyage originates in Miami and meanders along the coast of Central America to the famed Panama Canal through which we have a daylight transit — spectacular! Roughly halfway through the itinerary, we will sail along the Pacific coast of Ecuador for several days until we reach neighbouring Peru. Docking in Lima for two days allows for an expedition to the famed site of Machu Pichu. Oceania regularly offers itineraries that include airfare as well as many of the “a la carte” options one would pay extra for on other lines. One example is dining options in the specialty restaurants, Toscana and the Polo Grill, requiring only a reservation and no additional fee. Actually, on a previous cruise we received a note from the concierge with reservations already made for us as we just hadn’t had time to make them ourselves. The Toscana experience was exemplary but not over-the-top fancy. We felt extremely welcome and very comfortable dressed in country club casual attire — no tie for me and most men weren’t wearing jackets. If you like to dress a bit more “uptown,” that is perfectly fine too, and you do see some passengers who indeed dress up. I often slide a jacket on simply because it hides a multitude of sins (and my tummy) after several days of cruise food. On occasion, we are invited to a “Captain’s Reception” and we do dress appropriately, including a tie and jacket for me and a dressy outfit for my wife. This affair typically happens once on an itinerary — very impressive events indeed.
Oceania is very much a family, and that attitude and respect comes across in everything a guest experiences, including special functions with senior officers. Recently, on an Amazon expedition, the cruise director made a point of chatting with every individual sitting on the pool deck and addressed most by first name. This level of dedication and incredible customer service is a hallmark of Oceania and not to be underestimated. Never have I felt any crew member was just being courteous out of obligation; their approach was always genuine. This sincerity was not applied specifically to me because of my position as speaker; it was standard and consistently remarked on by others. As a matter of fact, on our Amazon expedition more than 60 per cent of the passengers were repeat guests — that speaks volumes. Ask anyone who has sailed Oceania, and I suspect the response will be similar. This itinerary aboard the beautifully refurbished Regatta is very popular; actually many categories are wait-listed. Mid-sized vessels (680 guests), tremendous guest services, the best food at sea, and a very interesting lecture series makes Oceania’s Regatta and this journey an absolute delight. I invite you to review the cruise and come along for the time of your life — no regrets. In the event your specific category is sold out, as they do rapidly, you might consider joining me in October 2015 on a grand journey from Istanbul to Dubai. This itinerary is 21 days and offers fantastic rates including airfare. Sailing aboard the sister ship Nautica, we sweep our way through the most eastern regions of the Mediterranean, visiting Israel, passing through the Suez Canal, the great land of Egypt, sail the Red Sea and arrive in Dubai Oct. 25, 2015. A lecture series is in development for this fascinating part of the world as well as our extended voyage to India, the Seychelles, Madagascar and South Africa. Plan, dream, save and then come play with us as we traipse the world in search of new and wonderful experiences; disappointment is not an option! PET STORE TO YOUR DOOR By: Trina Annand Photos Shawn Fillion

pending less time shopping and more quality time with family is key to living a better life. In this fast-paced world of to-do lists, time is precious — especially when it comes to caring for our pets. Driven by a passion for animals, Richard Armstrong dedicates his days to making life easier for pet parents one delivery at a time. His business is Perpetual Pantry and he delivers high quality pet food and supplies for your cat or dog to your front door. “Growing up I was always surrounded by pets, my mother bred Abyssinian Cats. I saw firsthand what good nutrition does for a pet’s lifestyle and longevity. I wanted to make high quality foods and products more accessible and convenient for pet parents,” says Armstrong. More than simply a delivery service, Perpetual Pantry is like having a friend grab a few things at the store for you — only Armstrong hand delivers every item. He researches and selects the best brands for his clients and their pets that are more like friends.
With the same prices as the big pet stores and free delivery, Perpetual Pantry offers one-of-a-kind customer service. “I’m a busy mom with kids, pets and a full-time career. A friend of mine recommended Perpetual Pantry as one ABOVE Richard Armstrong with Bo

way to shorten my ‘to-do’ list. Not only do they deliver the food fast, they also bring in special orders, help me decide on alternative brands to try, and even check in occasionally on my supply levels. I never hesitate to recommend Richard to my friends,” says client Sande Petkau. “Besides, the time you save having Perpetual Pantry deliver the goods means more time for you to play with your pets.” Via their highly secured, intelligent and easy-to-navigate website, Perpetual Pantry offers superb brands and easy ordering. Best of all, the company’s high ethics extend to all areas of their business for an effortless transaction. Armstrong is able to ensure the freshest food possible, ordering only as needed from his suppliers — all tracked — as his clients need more food.
“People often buy discount brands because they are cheaper, but not only are they nutritionally deficient, you usually end up feeding pets more because of it,” says Armstrong. “In the long run, you really do get what you pay for. Unfortunately, pets can’t tell us when they’re not feeling good, so it’s up to us to take the best possible care of them,” says Armstrong. Perpetual Pantry carefully sources their products avoiding animal bi-products and fillers. They support brands for special diets for pets with sensitivities and dietary needs. With brands like Nutri Source, a 40-year veteran of the industry and Horizon, a Saskatchewan brand that
sources 90 per cent of their products within 100 miles of the factory, Perpetual Pantry ensures the best possible products for pets. With his dog and co-pilot Bo, Armstrong often delivers orders within a day or two directly to a customer’s home or office, even if they’re out of town. “I am relentless about getting a product to my clients; I want them and their pets to be happy,” says Armstrong. or many dog owners, busy schedules limit the amount of time and care they can give to their pooches. Highly social creatures, dogs require regular interaction with people and other dogs to fulfill their emotional needs. Isolation, inadequate training and lack of exercise can create behavioural issues and decrease a dog’s overall well-being. At The Pawsh Dog — a luxury canine care facility with a training academy, salon, wellness centre, hotel, and day camp — dogs are cared for by a team of experts, with a range of services designed to help dogs thrive. Founded by professional dog trainer and handler Laurel Skuba, The Pawsh Dog has three locations and a team of 50 staff, including trainers, stylists and attendants for the day camp and hotel. A dog owner since she was 11, Laurel trained, conditioned and competed in Canadian show dogs throughout university, while earning a bachelor’s degree in science with a major in zoology and commerce. While Laurel initially pursued a career as an auditor, she yearned to work with dogs, and put into practice the skills she developed while training and showing dogs across North America. In 2009, Laurel opened The Pawsh Dog’s first location, adding two others in 2012. The business’
Wellness Centre — featuring a pool designed specifically for dogs — was opened in 2013 and is the only facility of its kind in Manitoba. Earlier this year, Laurel received the Manitoba Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award from Women Business Owners of Manitoba, which recognized her
successful endeavours with The Pawsh Dog. So what sets The Pawsh Dog apart from other canine-care centres? “People are shocked at the range and flexibility of services,” says Laurel. “Each one is the best in the city and

they all work together to support people in making sure their dogs have the best lives possible.” The Pawsh Dog’s day camp features a range of toys and activities, from balls, tug toys and play structures to custom beds for napping. Large dogs interact in a separate room from smaller dogs, ensuring the canines are properly matched for socialization. Dogs enjoy arts and crafts such as “paw art” along with a bubbles centre and sprinklers to play in. “It’s like a child’s day care but for dogs, with structured and unstructured play times,” says Laurel. “It gives them an outlet to learn, socialize, play and exercise.” With non-slip flooring, a state-of-the-art air system for freshness and health, and attendants with the dogs at all times, The Pawsh Dog’s day camp provides an exceptionally high standard of care. Owners also have the option of additional services such as hikes, swims, training sessions or spa treatments. “The dogs are so happy to come to the day camp and at the end of the day they are happy to see their owners,” says Laurel. The day camp is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, accommodating a range of dog owners’ schedules. Best of all, clients can also book a pet taxi for pick-up/drop off service. For clients needing overnight or longer-term care for their dogs, The Pawsh Hotel provides private suites with comfortable beds, cuddles and round-the-clock supervision. Hotel guests’ daytime hours are spent playing and socializing at the day camp and are treated to a minimum of four outdoor walks. If your dog stays three nights or more, they receive a complimentary bath and tidy by the salon team, which includes a blow-dry and brush out, nail trim, teeth brushing, ear cleaning, and face tidy.

Academy offers private training. The most recent addition to The Pawsh Dog is its Wellness Centre, which offers canine clients the use of a warm water pool designed for dogs, with ramps, shallow resting platforms and a UV filtration system that minimizes chemicals. A matted area is provided for exercise with equipment such as balance discs, peanut balls and a Jog-a-Dog treadmill. Aquatic fitness classes include everything from Puppy Learn to Swim to Cross Training and Geriatric Swim. Canine health issues and surgery recovery can be aided through the Wellness Centre’s hydrotherapy treatments. For improved muscle
tone and increased flexibility, clients may treat their dogs to a professional canine massage. Every service provided at The Pawsh Dog is top quality with friendly, knowledgeable staff who specialize in the particular area they work in. “We help people understand and meet their dogs’ needs while providing a high level of luxury service,” says Laurel. “The Pawsh Dog offers the best care possible for your dog.” The Pawsh Dog 10-1580 Taylor Avenue Winnipeg 204.261.9059 www.thepawshdog.com
“The Pawsh Hotel is very different than typical dog boarding services,” says Laurel. “The dogs play, do activities, and get tucked into beds with blankets, rather than spending most of the day alone.” Laurel’s experience working with show dogs inspired the grooming approach at The Pawsh Salon, where pooches are pampered with top-of-the-line products and an artistic flair. All the stylists have been trained in-house at The Pawsh Salon and have an intricate knowledge of grooming, using detailed scissor work that showcases each dog’s unique features. “The salon is based on bringing elite show grooming to pet dogs,” says Laurel. “Our stylists take great pride in their work and are in high demand.” Trying to teach your old dog new tricks? Or perhaps you have a puppy in need of obedience training. The Pawsh Dog’s Academy features a range of classes, from Puppy Kindergarten to Competition Obedience and Conformation Handling. Class participation is limited to eight dogs so you and your dog are guaranteed to fully benefit from the expertise of The Pawsh Dog’s professional trainers. In Puppy Kindergarten, puppies build their confidence and learn manners such as housebreaking and basic commands. Grade One, Two, and Three Obedience Classes expand on basic commands and further develop your dog’s skills, strengthening the dog/owner relationship. FitDogs offers canine conditioning through giving dogs indoor exercise, while Rally-O improves heeling and teamwork. Competition Obedience further advances training, preparing dogs to compete. WINTER WONDERLAND W By Apolline Lucyk
inter winds are coming, and it’s time to stock up on hot chocolate and start baking. However, there are also preparations you can plan for your outdoor spaces to make your winter months more enjoyable. Your backyard does not have to be forgotten during the winter months; there are many things you can do with your backyard to make it your very own winter wonderland.
hOt tUBs There is nothing quite like relaxing in a hot tub with the fresh winter air surrounding you — on a bright winter afternoon or quiet winter night — and, thankfully, hot tubs can be enjoyed throughout the year. There are many amazing hot tubs on the market now with therapeutic features such as hydrotherapy, chromatherapy and aromatherapy, so it’s good to review all your options when choosing your hot tub, to ensure that you have all the features you desire.

heated gaZeBOs A heated gazebo is another backyard accessory which can allow you to enjoy your backyard in the winter in a cozy, luxurious environment. There are a wide variety of high-power gas and electric heaters on the market which can really warm up a space. These high-power heaters are excellent for warming up any outdoor space, but situating them in a gazebo or other partially-covered area helps retain the heat and shelters you from the snow, allowing you to enjoy the winter weather with just a little more comfort and warmth.
FIre PLaces & FIre PIts If you already have an outdoor fire place or fire pit, you probably already know how wonderful they are to get cozy around during the winter. An outdoor fire pit or fireplace can become the heart of your backyard in the winter, and requires essentially no maintenance or upkeep.
All one must do is keep well-stocked with firewood. There are many beautiful fire pits and fireplaces on the market, so look for one which fits the size and style of your backyard.
Ice Bars An ice bar is another feature you can add to truly light up your backyard, and make your winter experience more special. Like a year-round outdoor bar, an ice bar is the perfect place to entertain, or have a drink after dinner. There are many features you can add to your ice bar, such as coloured lights to decorate it in the evening, and an ice luge or shooter block to enjoy with your friends; this is a special ice sculpture with a narrow funnel carved into it through which you pour liquid to chill it, and they can be easily integrated into an ice bar.
Backyard skatIng rInks Everyone loves skating in the winter months, and skating can be even more enjoyable if the rink is right in your back yard. Believe it or not, it’s very easy and affordable; home hardware stores sell a variety of kits. It is far more convenient to supervise your children’s skating time if it is in your own back yard; for older children, a backyard rink provides a great alternative to going to a public one, especially if there is no rink nearby. LIghtIng If you want to be outside with friends or family on dark winter nights, and especially on the skating rink, there are beautiful options for illumination lighting that can dress up an outdoor space. Illumination LED models are a good option for year-round lighting year; they are designed to withstand the harshest temperature conditions, and can provide up to seven years of continuous light.

help them. He returned to Winnipeg and opened a shop that imports items directly from the artists. Over the years, he has built up an impressive network of artisans and is continually looking to expand his inventory with new talent from this region. The company offers an original option for Winnipeggers — not just through their products, but also in how they source them by dealing directly with the artisans. “Nothing here is made in a factory,” says Boily. While Pieces of Paradise isn’t certified Fair Trade, they do adhere to their principles and pay the artisans a fair price for their work.
Pieces of Paradise’s products are almost all built from natural or recycled materials including amazing woodcarvings and lamps handmade with items such as bamboo, shells and rattan. They have a full line of beaded necklaces, fashion, fabric, art and more. For children, they sell instruments including drums, kites, whistles and décor perfect for a child’s room. in Indonesia. Phinisi are traditional Indonesian sailing ships created by the Buginese or Makassarese in Indonesia and used as fishing boats. These boats can take up to a year to make, coveted by the fishermen. Once the boats fall into disuse, the wood is salvaged and made into one-of-a-kind furniture. “When people come into the store, it’s a unique shopping experience,” says Boily. “Aside from offering one-of-a-kind pieces, there is a cool vibe to the store with island music playing and a tropical market feel. It’s like a piece of Indonesia right here in Manitoba.” To help create this atmosphere, Boily has a television showing pictures from his travels and he loves to talk to his customers about the pieces and their origin when asked.

Selling these spectacular pieces is not only fun for Boily, it also gives him a sense of accomplishment by helping Indonesian artisans. “Many of the artisans have young families and direct trade is important to them,” he says. “While helping them, we are also helping our customers find exceptional pieces that add a little flair to their homes.” The people of Winnipeg love this compassionate business. business, is about supply and demand. Even the winter months can be a good time to sell with serious buyers willing to trudge through snow, ice and wind to see your home. As well, less houses on the market creates higher demand.

O
ne of the most common questions I am asked is, “When is the best time to sell?” People assume selling in the spring yields better results; they believe it’s a prime time of the year for real estate. The problem is, everyone thinks the same, which creates higher supply. Real estate, like any other
So, when is the best time to put your house on the market? In my experience, timing isn’t as important as bringing your property to market properly following three essential guidelines; which will help ensure that your home will sell quicker and for more money any time of the year. SHOWING YOUR BEST Presentation is important in every aspect of life. People, even if they try hard not to, judge everything by first impressions. A sharply dressed man in a suit next to one in torn jeans, an old T-shirt and sneakers affects your judgement of their business sense. The same is true for your home. Keeping your house clean, the sidewalks shoveled and free of ice in the winter and lawn neatly landscaped in the summer, are the basics that make your home presentable to the public. In fact, staging your home goes a long way when appealing to a viewer; this sound advice is something your realtor will be able to help you with. Moreover, having a team of dedicated professionals at your disposal to enhance the ambiance and increase the feeling of warmth — making it more inviting to the public — is paramount.
ACCURACY IN PRICING Your house could look like it’s worth a million dollars, but if it isn’t worth it, why would you list it as such? Having a realtor who has experience to list your house in the ideal range will help your home sell quicker with the utmost profitability. If your home is listed too high, you’ll likely intimidate potential buyers. If your list price is too low, buyers will be suspicious as to why you’re trying to ‘dump’ your house or it may sell for less than what it should. A skilled agent will examine what houses in the area are selling for presently, what your house is worth, what you wish to get out of it and find that perfect number. MARKETING, MARKETING, MARKETING Now that you have the best-looking house on the block, your price is attracting customers from near and far, but your home still isn’t selling. Having a strong agent or team of agents will help you advertise smarter and more effectively. An experienced realtor will have a proven system to introduce your home into the market to the right buyers. This ultimately drives people into your home and offers onto your table. When looking at it from these three perspectives, anytime of the year is the perfect time to sell! To discuss your ideal situation, talk to a knowledgeable realtor. The Judy Lindsay Team Realty is always available to help.

NetworkiNg the right way tips from
Charles the Butler By Melanie Furlong
W
hen you’re attending a business networking session, your goal is to meet new people and make a good impression. Charles MacPherson, better known as Charles the Butler from his regular appearances on The Marilyn Denis Show, and best-selling author of The Butler Speaks, says, “Everyone is attracted to selfconfidence, whether you’re at a networking event or at a wedding. The secret is putting others at ease. Having social skills relaxes you and will help you meet lots of people. It puts you in a position of power.” One of the first steps is to make a good impression with eye contact; a good handshake, which consists of three pumps and release on the fourth, is also important.
Then, turn off your cell phone, unless, of course, you are a surgeon on call or your wife is about to give birth. “A cell phone is a tool,” says MacPherson. “In a networking environment, it is not a tool that will help you: it will hinder you. You are there to pay attention to the people you are meeting.” The biggest mistake you could make networking, he says, is to disrespect someone else in the room. “You may not agree with what that person is saying,” says MacPherson, “but even if they’re a goofus, as I like to say, at least give them some respect. If you treat everyone graciously, you’ll never be criticized for that. You’re a better person for it. People will want to do business with you because of the way you treat others.”

Because of the kick-down function of the new transmission, the hybrid offers the powerful thrill that drivers have come to expect from other Lexus vehicles.
The 2015 NX is available in two aweinspiring models, the NX 200t with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and the NX 300h hybrid. This now means that Lexus offers six hybrid vehicles to choose from; that’s more than any other luxury brand to date.
