Makeup Linings Playbook Line your lips and eyes like a pro this holiday.
B
reak out your red lipstick and black eyeliner— matte lips and the iconic cat eye are two of the hottest makeup trends this season. Try them out for yourself at your next holiday soirée!
Lesson 1 - Matte Red Lips Ruby-red pouts are back. These look-at-me-lips, while being one of the top beauty trends, may also be one of the most daunting. But don’t worry—bold matte lips aren’t that tricky, and when done right, they give you an instant wow-factor.
1
BUFF & PREP First, fix those chapped lips with a little exfoliation. The pros swear by a soft toothbrush, but a damp, warm washcloth will do the trick as well. After, apply a layer of balm, which will ensure long-lasting color, instantly smooth flakiness and fill in those pesky fine lines. Let it absorb for a few minutes to allow your lips to become moist and plump, then blot off the excess for a shine-free surface.
2
LINE Next, line your lips with a creamy pencil that is in the same shade as your lipstick. This creates guidelines for accurate application and a bumper to prevent pigment from feathering and bleeding. Then, use the same pencil to fill in your mouth to provide a base for the lipstick to adhere and prevent the color from setting into fine lines on the surface.
3
APPLY LIPSTICK Dab lipstick on the center of your bottom lip, either with a fine brush or straight from the tube, then give your lips a stained look by using your finger to massage the color into your lips. Reapply, and finish by blotting your lips with a tissue to soak up any shine.
Lessson 2 - Cat Eyes
F
rom thick to thin, black to bright, and everything in between, dramatic Brigitte Bardot-esque cat eyes popped up all over this season’s runways. At Libertine, for example, cat eyes were seen in the form of an inky shape that covered most of model’s lids, as
HAUTE TIP! Rest your elbow on the bathroom counter to get the most precise line!
opposed to a more simple and thin version that was seen at Dolce & Gabbana. Lets just face it— some days call for more than mascara.
1 2
DETERMINE YOUR SHAPE Look at yourself straight on in the mirror. Where your eyebrows end should be the direction your liner goes. START LINING Start with the brush or pencil resting on your lashes in the inner corner of the eye. Softly drag it across, letting the line become slightly thicker as you go, until you get to the end of your lashes. Then begin the tail in the opposite direction, with the tip of the brush facing your temple, and line until you connect the two lines. Either leave the cat eye wing thin and pointy, or increase the wing and intensify the drama by adding more layers of liner. [continued on page 22]

MAKE IT EVEN Keep in mind that it is always easier to add more liner than take it off. If you make a mistake, use a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover to clean it up. TOP IT OFF Now that your liner is done, focus your attention on your lashes. While a few coats of black mascara will do the trick, you can also use a strip of false lashes to enhance your eyes and the wing even larger.
Eye Want More! Take the look further by substituting teal or plum for black. Think of this as the partyready remix to your favorite old standard. Happy lining!

Oh, ANDY! Andy Garcia goes indie at the La Costa Film Festival. By: Whitney Butler
A
ndy Garcia sat across from me at the patio table outside his suite, where a party gathered of supporting actors, writers and friends—people who had collaborated on the film “At Middleton,” starring Garcia and Vera Farmiga. The indie film would make its La Costa debut in just a few hours, as a low evening mist gathered around the La Costa Resort and Spa in what Garcia described as “an emotional setting” for the festival. He liked it. I may have been a little star-stuck. He is, after all, cinema royalty—known for his notorious Mancini character and numerous A-list pairings in major blockbuster hits. As he swirled his red wine and puffed a cigar, his demeanor left a ring of relaxed energy about him. From a distance, Hollywood and its regime of CG robots and raunchy-humored Romeos looks more like a pop standard and less like an evolution of big talent on the big screens. It’s left some critics exhausted and nostalgic. So when I got a chance to sit down with Garcia to pick his brain about making films, that was exactly where I wanted to start. “The great curiosity is why doesn’t a script like [‘At Middleton’] ever get picked up by a studio immediately,” Garcia said. “I think everyone’s opinion was that it was too ‘small.’” Clearly he meant without the robots. “But the microcosm of a relationship could be a very big movie,” he continued. Enter independent film festivals. These multi-cinema, screening events have been around before Hollywood was…well, Hollywood. The first took place in Venice in 1932, a fest that’s still one of the largest and most prestigious in the world. There are approximately 3,000 documented festivals happening annually, in every language, celebrating every genre—from the impact of music in film to horror fests—and now, North County San Diego joins the ranks with an emphasis on sport documentary, a genre that fits the
Carlsbad lifestyle, yoga studios and all. “It’s hard to know what [Hollywood executives] say behind closed doors, Garcia said. “They say ‘thank you,’ ‘good luck’ and ‘have a nice day,’ and you have to ask yourself, ‘What are you prepared to do to make this movie?’” The conundrum of creative liberation during the digital era is widely due in part to these “doors” becoming increasingly more commercial. The importance of independent film festivals—whatever genre or size—has never been greater, providing a platform for local, national and international voices to impact audiences the world over. So how does someone like Andy Garcia, get involved in an indie film? What kind of luck did the writers have on their side? “I read the script and had an emotional reaction to the charm of it. I saw the character and got stimulated by him,” Garcia explained. “I knew the writing would attract a good cast, and that’s the key when you’re making an independent film.” Garcia got up and introduced me to Glenn German, the film’s co-writer, who had plenty of hilarious anecdotes about Garcia preparing for his roll as George, a bowtie wearing heart surgeon. Imagine Andy Garcia inside a Brooks Brothers clothing store, taking pictures of himself on his iPhone. That’s exactly where the pictures on German’s phone came from, as Garcia attempted to discover his character internally. “For me it was more like Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd that kind of throwback,” Garcia recalled.
“When Adam and Glen came to me, what they had was passion for the piece and the script, but there was nothing else. There was no financial backing or structure. We just had to shake hands and try to produce it.” “At Middleton” was shot entirely in 20 days using only available light, less a few interior shots. “It’s not trying to be glossy,” Garcia said. “There’s nothing artificial about it. Whatever you see is natural, and it grounds the movie. The real thing is in the script. The writing was right on point. Always moving forward—beautifully constructed.” Whether or not the growing popularity of film festivals will beg reconsideration from the powers that be is undecided. But as Garcia and his colleagues squeezed together on the red carpet for photos, it’s clear that it certainly doesn’t hurt to try.
Weight gain during the holiday season is not always dramatic, but
getting rid of the extra
pounds afterwards can be a real challenge.
SUGAR-FREE FAIRY
By: Ashley Baker
A few simple steps can stave off holiday weight gain.
’T
is the season to be jolly—a sentiment that seems to entail copious amounts of tempting desserts, savory hors d’oeuvres and festive
drinks.
While it may feel like tradition, all these high-calorie refreshments can be potentially detrimental to your health. In fact, the average American will gain 5 to 7 pounds between Halloween and New Years. And through the years, this can add up quickly. Fear not! You can enjoy the holidays without the unexpected gift of love handles by following these simple steps. The most important step is portion control. Several small meals throughout the day is ideal, and when you have to resort to unbuttoning your pants in order to shovel down one last piece of pumpkin pie, you may want to stop eating. Listen to your body and savor smaller portions throughout the day. Next, avoid sugar. This may sound like a kamikaze mission during the holiday season, but it’s doable if you have the right tools. Many natural sugar alternatives are both healthy and delicious. The most popular substitute is applesauce. Apples are packed with natural sugars, fiber and vitamins. Simply replace sugar with equal parts applesauce, and you’ve got a healthier alternative.
28 FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines
Another sugar substitute is pureed bananas, which works exceptionally well with breads such as pumpkin or banana. Dried grapes are also packed with sugar. For a creative twist, blend a cup of raisins in a food processor. And If your recipe requires granulated sugar, try coconut sugar, which is made from the sap of coconut blossoms. Avoiding sugar doesn’t have to be a chore. For example, these chewy chocolate chip oatmeal cookies are so healthy, you can even eat them for breakfast. All you need is four ripe bananas, two cups of oats, four tablespoons of peanut butter or Nutella, and, if desired, one cup of dark chocolate chips. Mash up the bananas, then add the peanut butter or Nutella, followed by the oats and chocolate chips. Mix together, form into balls and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minuets. Just like that, you have a healthy treat that’s sure to cure your sweet tooth without any guilt. For a signature crowd pleaser, try the rich blueberry cheesecake recipe here. It’s an amazing dish that guests can’t get enough of, and it’s not packed with fats, calories or sugar. So you are now armed with the tools you need to avoid the dreaded holiday bulge. With these healthy tips, you will be lean and energized for the new year.

O CHRISTMAS TREE!
DECEMBER
O CHRISTMAS TREE! Embrace the latest trends in holiday tree design.
A
s soon as fall starts to kick up leaves and the chill in the air begs cashmere sweaters from the closet, I immediately think of the holidays. It’s amazing how the feeling never gets old, and every year I get excited. As a designer, it’s a fabulous time of year to try new things—a different theme for the tree or simply a new color scheme. Designers have the advantage of going to trade shows and markets early in the season to get a view of the latest and greatest trends. Here are some trendsetting ideas to get ahead of the trends for a fashionable and stylish interior. This year, it’s all about the classics with a twist. The trends this year are interpretations of old ones, as well as some very fun fresh new ideas. One trend that has been around for a couple years, but is definitely not going away anytime soon, is the stylish glam

theme. Typically, this theme is done using either all silver or all gold, mixed with clear glass and white ornaments. However mixing gold and silver looks equally lovely—mixed metallics are both trendy and a great way to build a collection that plays well with others for future decorating ideas. This theme makes use of shiny-mirrored ornaments, crystals, glitter, glass, icicles and lots of bling. Some other options that really make the holidays pop are ostrich plumes, peacock feathers and wired ribbon or metallic mesh woven throughout the branches. A must on this tree is a stunning tree topper—and I don’t just mean a star. Make it dramatic with an elaborate arrangement that explodes from the top and crowns the tree in glory. O CHRISTMAS TREE!
DECEMBER
[continued from page 30]
A vintage theme is also fashionable. Think back on your childhood—old trains, antique cars, worn musical instruments, old toys and even old antique style signs. It is a wonderful way to bring a nostalgic feeling to the holidays and to remember a simpler time, when getting a doll or a wagon under the tree were the must-have toys of the season. This is the year to break out the really old ornaments that might even have some paint worn off. Adding ‘snow-in-a-can’ or flocking before decorating the tree would also compliment the days-of-yore spirit. Weave strips of
burlap throughout the tree instead of ribbon, add sleighs, vintage postcards, letters to Santa, plaids, birds and berries. All will look great on this tree topped with a simple and traditional star. A newer twist on this vintage theme is a “Gatsby” or “Roaring 20s” theme. This soft, romantic tree incorporates lots of feathers— especially boas and ostrich plumes—strands of pearls, musical instruments, crystals, fringe and light creamy whites or pale pastels. To fill in the gaps, use yards of billowy chiffon, tulle or lace. The tree topper should be either a showpiece that really captures the era, such as a miniature saxophone or other jazz instrument. For something else fun, try a mystical fantasy theme using fairies, pixies, unicorns and forest creatures. Peacock feathers, moss and floral branches would go wonderfully on this tree. A color palette of bright greens, aqua, purples and fuchsia complete this ethereal tree. No matter what theme you choose for the tree, remember the rest of the decorations should follow suit and match in color, style and feeling. The joy of Christmas is creating new traditions to pair with the old ones. Put on the holiday music, make some hot spiced cider or chocolate and decorate with wild abandon! Your home will radiate love and warmth throughout the holiday season if you express a uniquely holiday feeling.

THE 12 WAYS OF CHRISTMAS
The 12 Ways of Christmas New traditions pair well with the past for a simple and memorable holiday season. Article by By Jeanette Calo |
O
n the first day of Christmas, San Diego gave to me… a holiday that is simple and carefree. This year, FINE magazine decided to stick to the basics, updating past traditions and focusing on what’s really important. Here are 12 of our finest suggestions. Twelve Seats at Dinner Let’s trade in hors d’oeuvres and small talk for fine dining and conversation. Pass on the Gatsby-esque extravaganza, and focus on a simple time with your closest friends. When the emphasis is on quality over quantity, you have more time to savor the moment and reflect on the past year. If cooking is your forte, pull out all the holiday stops and craft a feast for the amount of people you feel comfortable hosting— might we recommend the Burgundy Tri-Tip, a.k.a. “Cardiff Crack,” from Cardiff Seaside Market (seasidemarket.com) as the centerpiece? And if you’d rather steer clear of the kitchen altogether, there’s a bevy of caterers to handle the work for you, among them The French Gourmet (thefrenchgourmet.com) and Waters Fine Food & Catering (waterscatering). Either way, prioritize people over spectacle, and we promise you won’t even miss your second cousin’s latest boyfriend.

Eleven Smiling Strangers December remains a time of giving, a holiday tradition that never grows old—and bringing the whole family in on it makes it that much sweeter. And there’s no shortage of charities that need support during the holidays. For example, Community Christian Service Agency’s Clairemont Service Center sponsors the Christmas Family program, where your family can provide food and gifts for a low-income family. Its Pacific Beach center provides holiday bags for homeless clients containing knit gloves and hats, stamped Christmas cards, hygiene items and holiday candy (ccsasandiego.org). It’s a simple way to spread the spirit to someone you never met. Ten Toes on Main Street Skip the stress of crowded malls, and hit the Main Streets for your holiday shopping. San Diego’s neighborhoods, from the Gaslamp to La Jolla to Rancho Santa Fe, boast charming shops with unique finds. Rancho Santa Fe (ledimora.com). And if you’re hesitant to break the department store tradition, remember shopping locally directly benefits our communities. In fact, according to Think Local First, a regional initiative headed by The San Diego North Chamber of Commerce, $45 to $68 of every $100 spent at a locally owned business goes back into the community and tax base. It’s just one more thing to feel good about as you stroll in the fresh air and pop into local shops and cafes. Nine Personalized Letters We officially give you permission to forgo the awkward family photo and newsletter—everyone has Facebook anyway. This year, take a break and send handwritten greetings to the select few you know will appreciate it. Nothing will leave an impression on your sister or grandmother like a sincere letter that shows you really care. And with high-end stationery shops like Ink By Kimberli Parker in Hillcrest (inkbykp.com) and Seaside Papery in Coronado (seasidepapery.com), you’re sure to find the perfect canvas for your heartfelt sentiment. Eight Yoga Poses This season, take time to breathe. During the hectic holiday season, it’s easy to put your health on hold. So why not put yoga at the top of your list? With locations in Point Loma, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and 4S Ranch, Yoga Six (yogasix.com) has your relaxation covered for the holidays. Or you can practice at home, running through the eight basic postures of a sun salutation. By the end, you’ll feel ready to face whatever challenges the holidays may bring. Seven Fishes Feasting What better time to sample local sea fare then The Feast of the Seven Fishes? An Italian-American celebration, this Christmas Eve feast typically consists of seven different seafood dishes—but we won’t blame you for starting with just a few. It’s a great tradition to anticipate the arrival of Christmas and to savor tastes that are uniquely San Diego. Six Happy Hostesses Surrender the cookies and mugs filled with candy. Give hosts—and teachers, hairdressers and neighbors—a useful gift they’ll actually appreciate. Share a bottle of gourmet olive oil from Temecula Olive Oil Company (temeculaoliveoil.com) or some Lady Primrose home and body products from Deja Chic Boutique in Encinitas (dejachic.biz). From a fine bottle of wine to gourmet coffee beans to Voluspa luxury candles (greathouse.com), a little extra thought can go a long way. Five O’clock Sunsets One positive of daylight saving time is you can catch a sunset a little early. Take a few moments in the afternoon to relish your view of the west with your family. It’s like enjoying your own personal holiday light show. [Continued on page 36]

THE 12 WAYS OF CHRISTMAS
[Continued from page 35]
Four Sticks for Roasting When the sun goes down, engage in a true San Diego experience and host a bonfire on the beach. Cuddle up with your family or friends, make some s’mores and tell … Christmas stories. It’s the perfect time to read classics like “The Night Before Christmas” or “A Christmas Carol.” And don’t be surprised if things get a little musical—the only thing better than campfire songs are Christmas ones. Three Spa Treatments OK, the gifts for everyone else are bought and wrapped— now it’s your turn. Indulge in the trifecta this December with a manicure, massage and facial. Many local spas offer holidaythemed packages to get you in the spirit. And if you just can’t stop with three, add a Warm Ginger Pedicure at The Spa at Estancia La Jolla (estancialajolla.com) or a Cranberry Pomegranate Sugar Scrub at Spa at the Del (hoteldel.com). It’s time to have yourself a merry little Christmas. Two Orders of Room Service If you’re looking for a little romance, why not escape to a local resort? and the holiday season can be the best time to take advantage of them. At the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, you can laze the day away with the “Elves and Eggnog” package, which includes breakfast in bed for two. Or slip away to Kona Kai Resort & Marina on Shelter Island (resortkonakai.com) for a private bonfire for two. Ice skate near the sand with the “Sea and Skate” package at the historic Hotel Del (hoteldel.com). Couples or empty nesters searching for a new holiday tradition need not look far. And a Partridge in a Live Tree Tired of setting up the tree every year? Cap off the holiday with a live Christmas tree, embellished by a string of lights and a few small ornaments. You’ll love the simplicity of it and the environment will love how green it is. You can even rent a tree from The Living Christmas Co. (livingchristmas.com) or adopt a live potted tree delivered by singing, dancing elves (adoptachristmastree.com). And once the season is over, plant the tree in your yard. It will be a testament to your simple and memorable holiday.

For Executive Chef JC Colón of Leroy’s Kitchen + Lounge ™
(leroyskitchenandlounge.com), it’s a family tradition to cook a few savory, full-bodied dishes for holiday dinners and pass them around the table family-style for everyone to share. Savory new holiday dishes include prosciutto-wrapped Berkshire pork chop, seafood trio, mushroom and chèvre ravioli, Baja grouper, and, for dessert, seasonal fruit galette with Moo Time ice cream. “Prosciutto-wrapped Berkshire pork chop is very similar to what I would cook at home,” Colón said. “It’s homey with a nice balance of flavors—the earthy pork chop and rich, buttery potatoes are complemented by the salty prosciutto and sweet fig demi-glace.” Mustangs & Burros at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa Executive chef Kim Kramer of Mustangs & Burros, the signature restaurant at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa (estancialajolla.com) will feature juniper-infused pan-seared venison with braised red cabbage, beets and butternut squash, finished with a currant jus, as well as a roasted pheasant with pomegranate mole over a soft corn polenta, served alongside acorn squash and pickled vegetables. Both of these dishes will be featured at Mustangs & Burros as holiday specials on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. “I love the European influence I lend to my gastronomic creations, which takes me back to my classical training,” Kramer explained. “We are so excited to feature these specialty entrees for the holiday season.”

LOVE IS IN THE EARTH Go from African rubies to yellow beryl gemstones with award-winning jewelry designer Judith Ripka.
T
he mystery of the transmutation of common metals into shiny gold has its origins in antiquity. The formula has always created a quandary and a challenge for the pursuer of this elusive elixir. There is however, a modern day alchemist—New York-born and -raised, international awardwinning jewelry designer, Judith Ripka—who has captured love from the earth with her own secret alloy. Ripka launched her first 18-karat gold collection in 1977, and has since garnered prestigious awards along the way, including the De Beer’s Award for Outstanding Jewelry in 1982, Leading Women Entrepreneurs of the World in 2000 and official jewelry designer for Olympus Fashion Week N.Y. She and was chosen for the official gift basket for both the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards and the 76th Annual Academy Awards in 2004—to name just a few accolades. Her mineral kingdom of conflict-free semi and precious gemstones and metals has manifested into five stores nationally, retaining a presence in Neiman Marcus, along with other fine retailers nationally and across the pond. Not one to rest on her laurels, Ripka has also successfully raised a family, which now includes five young granddaughters who seem to be following grandma’s high heels in her childhood love for all that glitters. Their bejeweled presence gives testimony to one of Ripka’s mottos: You are never too young to wear Judith Ripka. “One of my pet peeves is when jewelry sits in a safe and is trotted out only on special occasions,” Ripka said. “ I believe jewelry should be worn and enjoyed every day, from day

into evening, from black tie to blue jeans and everything in between. Jewelry should form a cohesive statement about the style of the wearer and be as much of daily fashion as the rest of the wardrobe.” The young, the mature, the rich, the comfortable, the professional and the famous—women and men—have embraced her collections on the red carpet and beyond. Oscar-nominated Kate Hudson and actresses Naomi Watts, Kelly Preston and other luminaries have been photographed with Ripka collectibles on their ears, fingers, necks and wrists. Linda Korey, a close friend of Ripka, has also been an avid collector of her jewelry. “Because of her distinctive styling and signature features, my earliest pieces work beautifully with the current designs,” Korey said. “Over the years, I have built a collection that I truly love to wear every day.” The heirloom quality of Ripka’s collection has endured, and pieces like the iconic 1977 PIA Cuff remain an essential part of her collection. Despite metal variations, the core design remains constant. The secret to her designs is that she doesn’t focus on trends but timelessness—“classic with a twist,” according to Ripka. Nor does she focus on regrets. “I am fortunate that my past is filled with joy, laughter and the happiest of times, but I have had some bumps along the way as well,” Ripka recalled. “Whatever your past has been, in business and in life, your sights should be set on the future. My mother had an expression which [has] resonated throughout my entire career: [Continued on page 52]

‘You can look back, but don’t stare.’ While I am mindful of my mistakes and failures, I don’t fixate on them but rather, I use them as a springboard to become even better.” Positivism resounds throughout Ripka’s corporation and invokes unwavering loyalty from Alice Aquilino, an employee of 14 years. “Judith has always treated her staff like family,” Aquilino said. “Her warmth, generosity and creativity make this a nurturing environment and she encourages growth. Maybe that’s why the majority of her team has been here for years.” Ripka’s answer to the question of when will she slow down reflects her work ethic and vivacity: “Why would I ever want to do that?” Currently, she is designing an amber collection, which was inspired by the Amber Room in the Hermitage Museum on a recent trip to St. Petersburg, Russia. And when is too much jewelry…too much? “Too much is never enough,” Ripka replied. “A bold cocktail ring during the day lends flair to a tweed jacket and
is just as appropriate in a conference room as it is on the dance floor. One of my personal favorites—and the most popular ring in our collection—has a large colored center stone, like cabochon rose quartz, surrounded by white diamonds and pink sapphires. Why save something like that for after dark?” Besides her preoccupation from African rubies to yellow Beryl gemstones, Ripka sits on many boards and steering committees such as the Rita Hayworth Gala in support of the Alzheimer’s Association. Also in charity partnership with Dress for Success Worldwide, Ripka has raised significant funds for the organization as well as public awareness. With all of these responsibilities, does Ripka have one guilty pleasure? “Judge Judy,” she admitted. “She is a friend and I love her sassiness. I try to watch her as often as possible, and my favorite movie is ‘To Catch a Thief’… It has everything: romance, mystery, intrigue…and fabulous jewelry.”

MOVING AND SHAKING Junior Achievement San Diego prepares local youth for the real world.
E
mpowering San Diego’s youngsters to own their economic successes since 1950, Junior Achievement won’t rest until it’s fully recognized by businesses, educators and policy makers around the world as a premier organization for preparing children K-12 for the real world. Staying true to its 60 year-old roots, Junior Achievement continues to teach younger generations about the importance of financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship in life after school, and has gained 4,800 volunteers to help spread those teachings along the way. Thanks to the passion of President & CEO, Joanne Pastula, and her 28 staff members, volunteers and supporters, the organization has committed to familiarizing students with economics and finances by learning the lessons and putting them into action through its programs. The hands-on programs, such as elementary school, middle school and high school in-class programs in addition to

summer camp programs and many more, are extremely beneficial in exposing San Diego students to the skills they will need to acquire before heading into the adult world. By teaching children and teenagers how to create jobs and apply entrepreneurial thinking into the workplace, Junior Achievement staff members and volunteers have prepared them for the real world far more than an analysis of the symbolism in the Grapes of Wrath would. As a single branch of Junior Achievement USA, Junior Achievement San Diego and Imperial Counties brings power and resources to our community. Fueled by their faith in the potential of young people and commitment to the principles of marketbased economics and entrepreneurship, the company has been able to educate a large population of kids, but remains determined to complete their goal of reaching out to 52,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade in the 2013 to 2014 fiscal year.

The Café offers an organic menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The s’mores kits are a popular item for fireside evenings and BBQ kits can be ordered in advance, with main entrees such as marinated steak or fresh fish, served with side dishes. And for a little extra, a “Camp Butler” will grill and serve your outdoor meal. Now that’s glamping. Complimentary bikes are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Numerous recreational activities such as horseback riding, wine tours, golfing, guided hikes and kayaking are available, as are Thursday outdoor movie nights, a Summer Concert Series on Saturdays and a heated swimming pool. Spa treatments are available in the privacy of guest accommodations, in the cedar spa cabin or alfresco in a canvas spa tent. Crystal Cove Beach Cottages, Newport Beach Forty minutes from San Diego, the stunning 735 miles of California’s golden Highway 1 begins in Laguna Beach and turns into Pacific Coast Highway. Nearby is Crystal Cove Beach Cottages, a well-known secret that received the California
Historical Landmark designation just this year. Reservations are only through Reserve America online, at a base rate of $88 a night for a dorm-style room that sleeps up to four. As founder and president of the non-profit Crystal Cove Alliance (CCA) Laura Davick said, “It is a magical, word-class experience that literally takes you back in time.” Davick grew up in Cottage #2 and spearheaded the campaign to stop the 12.3 acres of the rustic 46 cottages from demolition for a luxury resort. Being within Crystal Cove State Park ensures its permanent natural setting, which once served as a set for the Hollywood silent film boom and a drop-off spot for Prohibitionera rumrunners. Postwar tiki parties and luaus made it a popular gathering spot, according to Davick. Each cottage has been painstakingly restored to its former 1930-to-1955 glory, with themed authentic furnishings including a kitchen with a vintage refrigerator and modern microwave. A Future Restoration Project includes 17 North Beach cottages that are slated for an approximate $20 million restoration, which includes an active fundraising invitation to become a member at crystalcovealliance.org and a chance to win a coveted overnight stay. Limited ADA-disabled guest units with parking are available. Time travel into the past at Crystal Cove with extended family… [continued on page 60]

or not, but forget the telephone or television—it’s board games or books only for this sandy staycation. If you need the urban life, plenty of modern conveniences in the historic shopping district are within walking distance. The Bungalows, Laguna Beach Does time traveling sound like jet lag? Maybe, even glamping is too much effort...how about a daycation at the luxurious Bungalows—literally three steps from the beach? Housed within the Pacific Edge Hotel, The Bungalows are located on 280 feet of beach property in downtown Laguna Beach. Completely private indoor/outdoor units, these surf cabanas have keyed access and are reserved for day use from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. This allows guests to have a base of operation, with a full kitchen with fully stocked refrigerator and snack bar, full bath, a studio great room with flat-screen televisions, CD/ MP3 sound system and air-conditioning. If the sand is simply too much nature, designated lounge chairs and day beds are also available in front of each unit on a private cabana deck. Also steps from the cabanas is The Deck, a casual eatery and the only open-air, beachside restaurant in Laguna. Also offered with The Bungalows is your personal VIP Cabana Host to help with any planned activities such as private massage services, mobile airbrush spray tanning, manicure/ pedicure services, photography and video services, and stand-

up paddle and surf rentals and lessons. Nine hours of stressfree living qualifies as a luxury daycation, wouldn’t you agree? Crystal Pier Hotel and Cottages, Pacific Beach If sleeping directly over the fathomless rumbling Pacific Ocean soothes you like a warm bubble bath, or if you miss the sound and feeling of crashing surf shaking the pilings under a Malibu abode—how about the historic Crystal Pier Hotel and Cottages, right here in Pacific Beach and just 15 minutes from downtown San Diego? Nine decades of out-of-state and local owners, storms, reconstruction, restorations of the pier and cottages, Hollywood celebrity guests, and filming have finally settled down to a sweet modern glamping above the sea. One car can drive and park in front of the suite or cottage, making it too cozy to venture back out. Fortunately, each unit comes fully equipped with a kitchenette, separate bedroom and living room, and a private deck over the beach. Crystal Pier provides a gated key entry and night security for those night owls choosing to stay out and play. Leave the cigars and pooch at home—this is not just a vacation from same old, but also from vices and canine. It is suggested to reserve four to six months in advance. Spoiler alert: because the ocean tide changes throughout the day, not all of the cottages stand above the surf below. Oh well—herein lies glamping by the Sea.

FASHIONABLE SUCCESS Ann and Jennifer Siner turned their love of shopping into big business. By Heather Randall | All photos used with permission
F
or you North County shopinistas who don’t want to run up your credit cards—go clean out your closets and bring the goods over to My Sister’s Closet and Well Suited in Encinitas. You can make some commission off of your old clothing at the two new storefronts, which recently celebrated their official grand openings on Nov. 2. Ann Siner, CEO and founder of My Sister’s Closet, turned her love of shopping into a successful business with her sister, Jennifer Siner. The duo has been steadily growing their consignment business since 1991. They first began their business in Phoenix, Ariz. and now have 11 locations in Arizona. Not satisfied with simply helping out the ladies, the sisters eventually decided to diversify, and created Well Suited, for men, and My Sister’s Attic, for furniture. In 2011, the sisters opened their first store in San Diego, across from University Town Center. They
62 FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines
now have three locations in San Diego. Even though these shops are thrifty, you don’t feel like you’re rooting through junk. The Siner sisters’ commitment to turn the dark, dirty and dingy into cute, clean and current has been the secret to their success. “Why does a second-hand store have to look like a bad Goodwill?” Ann Siner asked. “Why can’t it look like a new boutique?” Another core value of their business model is commitment to customers. Ann Siner really cares about her customers, and has designed her business around their needs. All store locations are open seven days per week, and you don’t need an appointment to sell your items. The sisters have expectations about the product they will accept though, so make sure you bring the best of what’s on your rack. To meet the cute, current, clean standard, items
consigned must be no more than four or five years old, current season, clean, and no defects. Clearly, that model has worked great so far. On average, items are discounted up to 70-90 percent off retail price. Ann Siner says designer handbags are a popular item to sell because in general, they are higher priced so they return a higher commission, and they’re a popular item with shoppers. “You should come in,” said Ann Siner, who regularly dresses head-totoe in her store’s merchandise. “Give us a try. We’re not like any other resale or consignment store.” Customers can save big shopping with her, and they can have a great time while they’re in the store. With well-lit storefronts carrying such brands as Chanel, Kate Spade and MaxMara, everyone will find something well-suited for them. For more information, visit: mysisterscloset.com

DECK THE HALLS
DECK THE HALLS Follow these quick real estate tips to attract home buyers. By John Cadman of FINE Homes Real Estate | All photos used with permission
A
re you planning to sell your home soon? Should you wait until after the New Year to put your house on the market? Or, if you already have it on the market, should you take it off the market for the holidays? If you can afford to miss the most driven, motivated and qualified home buyers of the year, yes. If you are serious about getting your house sold, no. It’s a fact—there are fewer buyers during the holidays, which is why most sellers will take their house off the market or wait until after the holidays to put their house on the market. This creates a shortage of inventory for the serious buyers in December. For some buyers, the holiday may be the only time they have off work to look at homes. Relocation buyers have to find a house in a time crunch. You don’t need more buyers—you need the right buyer. If you are serious about selling, you want to be selling when there is less
competition and the buyers are motivated and serious. Plus, your home looks best when fully decorated. Decorate with all the colors of the season. Colors evoke emotions so choose red, yellow or orange to add warmth and excitement, and use green to evoke a feeling of security in a new beginning. Be careful to not block hallways or shrink rooms with giant trees or elaborate displays. In the yard, add curb appeal with a few poinsettias or other winter-color plants to put a smile on the buyers’ faces when they drive up. The days are shorter, and buyers are often looking after work at dusk and after sunset, so add some lights on timers and turn them on at dusk for buyers driving the neighborhood. When the buyers enter the house, you want it to be cozy and inviting, so turn the thermostat up a couple degrees to make it warm and homey for showings. If you have a fireplace, turn it on or set an artificial log ablaze. [continued on page 66]

Lots of light makes rooms look bigger and cheerier. Since winter sunlight is weaker than the summer sun, clean the windows and store the screens in the garage, replace the light bulbs with the highest wattage ratings for safe operation, and turn them all on to make the rooms as large as they can be. Simmer some spiced cider or holiday stovetop potpourri before the buyers arrive to make your house smell delicious. But don’t forget to turn off the stove if you leave the house. Never leave a lit stove unattended, and make sure you keep plenty of water in the pot so it doesn’t boil dry and burn. If you can’t be home in time to
66 FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines
light the stove, put the potpourri in a crockpot and let it simmer on low while you are away. A plate of cookies on the counter with some holiday napkins nearby stimulates a welcome feeling, which is what you want the buyers to feel in your home. A little card inviting them to enjoy a cookie makes them feel at home. The only way to attract the right buyer any time of year is by being on the market and making your house appealing, so enjoy the holidays and decorate it for successful selling.

3 all the way to Main Lodge. The difference is that it takes 45 minutes to reach Cervinia—and longer if you stop to take pictures. Another thing Nicole and I like to do is stop at a cute restaurant along the way, where we enjoy a plate of pasta or a quattro stagioni pizza on the deck of a rustic mountain chalet. Or course, you’re obliged to pay in Euros since you’re in Italy, although the Italian restaurateurs will accept your Swiss francs or a credit card. You’re also compelled to watch the time since you want to make sure you get back to the Swiss side of Zermatt before the lifts close. From Cervinia, you have to ride two long gondolas and a cable car—which take another 45 minutes or so—but you can’t miss the last ride of the day at 3 p.m. Otherwise, you’re skiing back to Cervinia and looking for a room for the night. Skiing on the Swiss side of Zermatt is where the best turns are found. The groomed runs are as wide as the Interstate 5/805 merge. You can really haul at high speeds, since all [continued on page 72]

the bumps have been smoothed over, and there are never any lines on the high-speed chairlifts. Zermatt has 153 miles of trails spanning three mountains—the Klein Matterhorn, Gornergrat and Rothorn—that are generally intermediate, or what Nicole calls “ego skiing.” If it’s a bluebird day with a cloudless sky, creamy snow, and the hooked pyramid of the Matterhorn standing majestically over the pistes, I’m not sure how any ski area in the world can eclipse these ski experiences. At the end of the ski day, you ski a curvy eight-mile trail back to the village, which takes a good half-hour. I’ve found this trail to be
the most challenging run of the day because of several steep sections and hard-pack snow that is usually icy. As you near the village, you ski past old wooden farmhouses with slate roofs until you reach the charming gingerbread hamlet of Zermatt, which is car-free and serviced by free electric buses and horse-drawn carriages. The bustling après-ski and thousands of tourists roaming the paved streets give the Alpine resort a vibrancy that surpasses Vail, Aspen or Whistler. Whether you’re staying at a five-star hotel like the Zermatterhof or a cozy and comfortable bed-and-breakfast, Zermatt offers a ski experience that is, well, on top of this world.

World Class LASIK In The Heart of San Diego.
Muske, Sean Caddell, Steven Cox and Tom Karlo.
THE DOCTOR Since 1999, Dr. Motwani has performed LASIK on some of the most complex cases of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and repaired problems with prior refractive surgeries. Having successfully accomplished thousands of surgeries utilizing a carefully balanced algorithm, this effective surgery will help reduce or eliminate the need for reading glasses. Doctor Motwani’s resume includes LASIK performed on over one-hundred physicians, many professional athletes, hundreds of law enforcement officers and fire fighters, and thousands of San Diegans who expect world-class laser eye surgery. THE LASER The Alcon Wavelight Allegretto Wave Eye-Q System is the fastest, most accurate laser in the country and one of only two in San Diego. This incredible laser is also the only one FDA approved to prevent night glare and halos. THE CENTER Regularly praised by patients for providing guests warm and caring customer service with a professional staff. The center itself is worldclass, luxurious, beautiful and comfortable. THE PHILOSOPHY The surgeon has to be responsible for all aspects of the laser eye surgery including the pre-operative measurements, surgery on the eyes, postoperative care, the education of a patient’s diagnosis and treatment options. It is this philosophy that defines the exceptional difference and unparalleled customer satisfaction.
