Labor of Love The Ideal Match Makes Finding Love Fun
T

rue love. Those two simple words have motivated us for centuries. Referenced by poets and philosophers, cursed by the scorned and heartbroken and lauded by optimists and believers, the search for love is the eternal unifier across the human experience. The hunt for it has plagued us all, spurring us forward and eluding us for centuries. But those centuries of practice have, thankfully, resulted in a more refined system, a system that’s practically been perfected by Karian Forsyth of Ideal Match. Karian first embarked on the path of matchmaking in 1997, a path that would eventually lead her to a role as San Diego’s finest and most abiding matchmaker. Karian passes down her extensive experience and unparalleled success in the matchmaking industry to her staff at Ideal Match, some of whom have been with her for over 10 years. That means that the pesky, established quest to find true love just got a whole lot easier. Unlike many modern dating websites or popular apps, Ideal Match operates entirely on human–to–human connections, eliminating emotionless computers, surveys and algorithms. They help you find your true “ideal match” through a variety of avenues and tactics, beginning with traditional matchmaking, in which one of their seven Certified Dating Coaches matches you with real people (a process that’s far more complex and nuanced than a simple swipe, unlike many modern dating apps like Tinder). Those Coaches will help you navigate the often–intimidating world of dating too. Ideal Match also hosts singles events to help you meet and interact with other like–minded singles. And then there’s Karian’s specialty, image consulting; through an extensive makeover process, Karian and her team of specialists (including a life coach, dating coach, designer, hair salon, medical spa and skin care esthetician, make–up artist, professional photographer, cosmetic surgeon, nutritionist and personal trainer) help refine your look to help you appeal to your ideal match. As Karian would say, “Change your image, change your life!” That may all sound a bit overwhelming—but the step–by–step process at Ideal Match is seamless and, according to most clients, genuinely fun. So what can you expect if you decide to invest in the Ideal Match process? First of all, you should recognize that it’s just
28

that—an investment; this is about finding your person, not just for the weekend, but hopefully forever. Once you’re committed, you’ll begin with a phone consultation where Ideal Match will gather your basic information and pair you with a Matchmaker. Next, you’ll take a trip to their beautiful Mission Valley offices and meet your Matchmaker so they can see how you’re currently dating, if you’re ready for a relationship and profile your Ideal Match; it’s more like catching up with a longtime friend than a formal interview! Your Matchmaker will guide you through defining the three obstacles to finding someone special and how they’ll help you surmount them. Your conversation will put you at ease; matching (and the hurdles that come with it) seems practically effortless when your Matchmaker breaks down their process. We all know a bit about that first obstacle; how do you possibly narrow down the massive playing field of your city in order to find other quality singles? The Ideal Match advertises every single month, attracting those quality singles so you don’t have to. Meeting, on the other hand, can be the most awkward part of dating. With The Ideal Match, there’s no uncomfortable introduction or questionable arrangements; they make dating fun again by doing all the tough stuff for you. As for matching, as Karian says, “The fact is, we’re not our own best matchmakers or everyone would be in a happy, healthy relationship!” The Ideal Match makes matches professionally— they definitely know what they’re doing! Once you’ve covered the plan to tackle the obstacles, you’ll discuss their three tenants of matching: physical, emotional and intellectual attraction and compatibility. Ideal Match knows you want to be attracted to the person you meet (who wouldn’t?), so they take close–up and full–length photos of every client. Their signature compatibility profile takes a deeper look into your personality—things like your relationship goals, moral and ethical values and the personal importance you place on sex, romance and affection—in order to make sure you match on an emotional level. Many services don’t observe matters of intellect, which can often lead to sour matches. The Ideal Match notes each person’s educational background, career or profession and income level so that you can meet someone you truly respect and admire for their mind and success. You’ll also be matched based on common hobbies and interests, which means you’ll get to do things you both enjoy (hiking! yoga!) rather than suffering through a bad match’s idea of a good time.
“Unlike many modern dating websites or popular apps, Ideal Match operates entirely on human– to–human connections, eliminating emotionless computers, surveys and algorithms.”
Your Matchmaker is sure to go over their standards of quality over quantity and describe each step of communication and feedback so they can fine–tune the selection of introductions. After your meeting, if you and your Matchmaker both think you’re a good match with the process and their database, you’ll invest in a membership—whether that means simply meeting other singles or transforming your entire life through their coaches and image consulting is entirely up to you! Once you complete and pass the background check (a measure that’s required for every single client to ensure your safety and comfort), you just sit back and watch Ideal Match work their
magic! You’ll receive introductions via email, go on dates that were set up just for you and attend fun events and mixers. All you have to do is answer your email and have fun! Karian and The Ideal Match team have been helping San Diego singles meet their match for years, developing a unique and tested approach with proven success stories. If you’re looking for heartache and brooding regret like those poets and philosophers of old, then stay on that old–fashioned quest. But if you’re a modern soul and you’d like to find love and have fun while you do it, The Ideal Match is your ideal solution!

A WILD RIDE
I
FALL IN LOVE AGAIN—WITH THE FERRARI CALIFORNIA T By Keith Turner
think I’m in love. I just spent the weekend with a beautiful, sexy and incredibly smart Italian who took me for a wild ride that left my head spinning, heart pounding and my entire body wanting more. She is the new Ferrari California T, a fantastic touring/sports car featuring graceful lines, a perfectly manicured interior and the extreme power to take charge at any instant. She’s intelligent, anticipating my every driving need and delivering with ease and grace, all while whispering a soft and soothing purrrrr into my ears. But when the mood strikes and we get the urge to accelerate our passion, she growls that unmistakable Ferrari roar that can only be produced from a vehicle carrying the “Prancing Horse” on its bonnet. Yes, I am clearly in love. (Continued on pg. 32)
The Ferrari California T is sure to rev your engine.

With effortless conversions, expandable trunk space, a turbo– charged V–8 engine and a perfectly manicured interior, you’re bound to fall hard for this Italian.
There’s a certain standing that one must possess to dance with such an exquisite machine as a Ferrari. One must be pre-qualified to own—or even to borrow—a Ferrari. You must belong to a class that’s beyond reproach and above most others in sophistication, elegance and status. That, or you’ve already owned one of the super cars and are therefore qualified for continuous membership in the Ferrari family. Today I am neither owner nor borrower, but more like an invited guest being treated to the once–in–a–lifetime thrill of driving the Ferrari California T along the Pacific Coast Highway and through the Malibu Hills. She’s everything that I thought she would be and much more. With a finely tuned, turbo–charged V–8 engine that can produce upwards of 500 horsepower, the California T offers seven speeds of seamless, rocket–like power that will take you from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, if you are so inclined. With a touch of a button, the hardtop convertible transforms the California T from a stately, racecar–like sedan into a topless touring ride with an oversized windscreen that provides plenty of protection from the wind so as not to muss 32

up your hair. The two–plus seating configuration provides a back seat for children or adults on short rides and folds down to extend the trunk cargo space to accommodate longer items such as golf clubs or skis. As you ease into the sculpted leather driver’s seat of this beautiful machine, you notice that the two–tone dash is particularly simple, almost sparse, as most of the driver’s controls are located on the steering column, allowing you to keep your hands on the wheel at all times. Column stalks have been eliminated and paddle shifters offer a more manual driving experience and remain attached to the steering column—not the wheel itself, as in most vehicles—for easy up and down–shifting when desired. On the road, the California T growls with excitement as we head toward the ocean, cruising comfortably at city speeds, yet always ready and willing to jump at the chance to prove that its Formula One race car lineage is still very much a part of its DNA. We hit the open road and quickly pick up the pace to test the T’s ability to run. And true to its thoroughbred heritage, the car sprints quickly to the century mark with ease.

We back off a bit to align with local traffic laws, our hearts pounding and eyes wide open, like a kid just off his first ride on a roller coaster. Wow… wow… WOW! But the T is much more than a speedster, which becomes evident when we take on the tight twists and turns of the mountain roads. With a low center of gravity and Ferrari’s F1– Trac traction control, the vehicle is tuned to accelerate faster out of corners than previous models, providing a greater sense of security and stability on tight turns. Innovation is everywhere in the California T, as Ferrari’s designers made certain that drivers have all the technological comforts, such as a 12–speaker JBL professional sound system, while never forgetting that owning a Ferrari is all about fun. With a starting MSRP of $198,973, our well–appointed date for the weekend carried significant options to push the total price tag to $270,839. As with all Ferraris, new or pre–owned, an exclusive seven–year scheduled maintenance program ensures that the car is being kept at peak performance and safety standards. Yes, most definitely, I am in love… with the Ferrari California T.

PLAN YOUR DREAM VACATION TO CABO SAN LUCAS By Tammy Searle
abo San Lucas is back and better than ever! Natural disasters have a way of bringing people together and that’s certainly the case with Cabo San Lucas; after the hurricane of 2014 ravaged this paradisiacal destination, it’s finally returning to its glory. Cabo, the crown jewel of the Baja Peninsula, has something for everyone, from larger, all– inclusive resorts (which include many of your meals and beverages) to smaller boutique hotels along quiet and tranquil private beaches. Unlike vacation spots on the east coast that are dictated by seasons, we’re fortunate to have access to this beautiful escape 24/7, 365. (Continued on pg. 36)

Front & Center INTERVIEW
With an almost unprecedented record, Jimmie Johnson is set to rival such legends as Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt, but that doesn’t stop him from giving back through organizations like his own Jimmie Johnson Foundation.
CHECKERED–FLAG CHAMPION JIMMIE JOHNSON TALKS TRACK WITH FINE MAGAZINE By Bob Morey
S
an Diego is home to many champions, and when the green flag drops this month to start the 2016 NASCAR season at the Daytona 500 on February 21st, our local favorite Jimmie Johnson will begin his quest for his seventh Sprint Cup Championship. Winning the Championship would place him in the rarefied air with Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt for most career championships in NASCAR history. NASCAR is one of the most of grueling sports, hosting a schedule that crisscrosses the nation, offering 36 races over 38 weeks from February through November. You asked, readers, and Jimmie Johnson answered; here are his responses to your most pressing questions. You started riding motorcycles at the age of 4; how long was it before you started driving on four wheels?
40
FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines
I actually started on four wheels competitively around 1993. My mentor from Supercross, Rick Johnson, was able to line up a meeting with an executive from General Motors and they gave me a shot for an off–road truck. My first actual racing on pavement was in the ASA Series in 1998. In–car cameras are great for showing the viewers the action on the track, but can you tell us how it feels to be in a car that is traveling upwards of 200 mph? It’s hard to explain. There are so many g–forces pulling on your body, you don’t realize how fast you are going because everyone around you is going the same speed. The tracks are bumpy and imperfect so the car has a lot of movement inside, you feel every bump. It sure does make a 35 mph road seem slow, though. [Laughs]
What are your favorite tracks to race at? I love Dover International Speedway, Martinsville Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway. Dover is a concrete beast—it just suits my driving style. Martinsville is a half–mile and we go around it 500 times. It’s crazy. And Texas is just fast, and we have performed and won many times on all three. Would you like to see NASCAR add more road courses to the schedule? I don’t know the answer to that, since my best tracks are short tracks and mile and a half tracks. I like visiting the two current ones—Watkins Glen and Sonoma. I’ve won at Sonoma, but Watkins Glen is one of the four tracks I have never won on. Back in the ‘90s you raced trucks off–road, then skipped the truck series in NASCAR and went directly into the Busch series (now Xfinity), why was that? It was just opportunity. They don’t necessarily work like AAA baseball—racing in the Truck Series is tough racing—you don’t have to go through the succession of Truck, Xfinity, then Cup. It’s just opportunity, sponsorship and open seats. As some drivers have tried it, have you ever considered running in the Indy 500 and the Coca–Cola 600 in the same day? [Laughs] It would be nice, but I would have to ask my wife’s permission to do that. It’s tough to do both in one day, but it’s also hard to make it to Indianapolis the entire month of May for practices and qualifying. I have 100% focus on my Lowe’s team, so that’s where my priorities lie. I do like watching the 500 from the infield of Charlotte before we race though. In 2006, along with your wife, you started the Jimmie Johnson Foundation and host a golf tournament each year that has raised millions of dollars to date in supporting social needs. What are some of the causes you’re most passionate about? Education and fitness. Focusing on youth has always been important, but childhood education and our new wellness challenge, being healthy and focusing on school, are the two essentials for setting kids down the right track. My wife Chandra and I enjoy the work we do through the Jimmie Johnson Foundation. It appears to many that Mr. Johnson was born with wheels on his feet and is as close to being a natural born driver as there is. Now, after driving in several different series throughout his career, he is at the pinnacle of his profession with years of competition in him. We foresee Mr. Johnson winning another Sprint Cup or two before he hangs it up and leaves the track. Don’t miss out on supporting Mr. Johnson next month at NASCAR’s only local stop of the season for the Auto Club 400 on March 20th in Fontana. Good Luck Mr. Johnson, may this season be lucky number seven—we’re all rooting for you!

Mobile Matchmaker
HOW TO FIND LOVE IN A MODERN WORLD By Robin Satterwhite
A
h, February. The month that makes us look at love. Matchmaking, a time–tried practice that spans continents and centuries, has evolved into a proactive approach to meeting potential partners and working on one’s self, but it often comes with a high cost. While real matchmakers are still a great resource, the ways in which we find each other have grown, specifically thanks to the internet and our cell phones. As is the case with most new trends, these avenues were first looked down upon, emerging through risqué avenues like AOL chat in the ‘90s. Since then, the world of online dating has gained not only acceptance, but expectance. People no longer choose online dating as a last resort, but use the myriad of apps and sites to avoid the dirtied waters of bars and watering holes. But even the most avid swiping and poking will get you nowhere unless you’re on the right site! Here’s a quick guide to the most popular sites and apps.
Websites:
Millionairematch There are plenty of sugar–daddy type websites out there, but what about those of us who are looking for a higher level of quality and equality? Striving for great wealth, education and success is something society glamorizes, but the loneliness of its realities tend to be hidden; Millionairematch alleviates that loneliness. Founded in 2001, Millionairematch is the top online resource for this elite community. With just under 2.5 million users, the pool is small compared to other sites, but it does contain a higher percentage of the 1% and is also monitored a little more closely than other sites. It also provides tools to verify income and identity information, which gives a bit more protection from the unavoidable scammers and others misrepresenting themselves. If opting for a paid membership, the cost tends to be on the higher side, around $70 a month, providing one more safety net for those looking for a real commitment. eHarmony For those looking looking for a larger pool to chose from—or if you’re not pulling in millions—we recommend 42
FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines
eHarmony. Started in Pasadena in 2000 by a psychologist who was specializing in marriage, this site uses an in–depth compatibility matching system based on your many responses. It might require a bit of extra work up front, but the science behind the questionnaires is what makes eHarmony work so well. It does most of your matching for you, so you can’t search the system to the extent you can in other sites, but those you do see will have a much higher likelihood of compatibility. The cost is comparable to Millionairematch which, along with the large amount of work up front, helps maintain a trusted environment for those who are looking for a true relationship. POF (Plenty of Fish) If you’d prefer an even larger pool with less commitment and more diversity, POF (Plenty of Fish) has over 90 million registered users, is available in over 5 languages and costs less than $10 a month. It also has a compatibility matching system based on a personality assessment completed at registration, but it’s nowhere near as in–depth as eHarmony. Unlike some of the more expensive or detailed sites, you’re likely to have to do a lot more of the work and deal with people and situations you’d rather not on Plenty of Fish; like everything in life, you get what you pay for. But if you’re looking for something less serious—something short– term or just for fun—Plenty of Fish is the perfect site for you.
Apps:
Tinder Tinder may have a bad rep for its hook–ups and hangouts, but it’s also addictingly fun. This simple app, centered around the actions of swiping right for yes or left for no based on one–line descriptions and headshots, has evolved into the entertainment and dating star of the decade. More than 50 million people in over 196 countries use Tinder, and a lot of them are actually looking for a relationship. What’s more, this is one place singles can go that is still moderately gender balanced. Dating websites can feel like a chore and a lot of work that takes time, but Tinder often feels more like a game. If you’re looking to dip a toe into the online dating pool, Tinder is a great place to start.
Bumble Bumble was created by one of the founders of Tinder to be more female–friendly and is focused on those looking for a real connection. This app is similar to Tinder in that you swipe on those you like, but matches disappear after 24 hours if the woman doesn’t email her beau once matched. Bumble, like Tinder, has launched internationally and is still free. The Catch The Catch dating game app is an intentional spinoff of the ‘60s TV show The Dating Game. On the app, the ladies invite a group of men to play based on her set preferences; the guys then answer her questions and she eliminates them until a winner emerges, all according to how they answer. These men have never seen her pictures and the game doesn’t start until four have accepted. Without knowing which suitor answered what, the contestants are scored and the one with the highest score schedules the date suggested as his final question. The Catch is still in it’s beta phase; sign up and get started as soon as it hits your area at http://thecatch.co/.
Classic Matchmaking:
Ideal Match If you are ready for real work and commitment, Ideal Match is an example of the kind of matchmaking service that can get you in front of the right people and help you grow. Your matchmakers serve as your friend, therapist, coach and assistant in finding love, so it’s important you have a good connection and clear communication. With singles events, makeovers and personal matchmaking, Ideal Match offers a variety of services to help you find love. Unlike other modern dating avenues, Ideal Match offers the unique perspective of a real person—not just an algorithm or survey. They are successful enough to provide such a service and serious enough to do something about it, putting your chances of finding “the one” high above the rest. theidealmatch.com

FAMILY JOULES
UNITED KINGDOM BRAND JOULES LANDS STATESIDE, JUST IN TIME FOR EL NIÑO By James H. Moran
I
n the small market town of Harborough, England, Tom Joule sighted a fatal flaw in the British retail industry of the late ‘80s: a lack of supply in colored and printed wellies, better known in the United States as “wellingtons.” The knee–high waterproof boots, up until that point, had been remarkably underwhelming and dull; the pieces lived a life of relative monotony until Joule noticed his customers’ penchant for color. Since then, Joules Inc. has grown to be one of Britain’s most beloved lifestyle brands, known and loved for
its signature hand drawn prints and unique use of color. With its emergence into the U.S. wholesale market, Joules delivers a colorful, weather resistant touch of British charm to San Diego, just in time for El Niño. Showcasing the brand’s unique attention to detail and signature hand–drawn prints, Joules makes Spring/Summer a season to celebrate, sans rain, with its attendant collection. Highlights from the SS 16 collection include the brand’s signature wellingtons and the Right as Rain outerwear line.
THE WELLINGTON Dive into the Joules family with the boot that’s made the brand a British household name. From festivals to farmyards, a pair of chic wellies are an essential wardrobe staple: the floral prints— enlivened with soft greys, neon lines and injections of bold pinks and oranges—embolden the wet weather essential. With a fresh update on past prints, heights to suit various preferences, and a range of soft Neoprene lining, there is bound to be a boot for everyone—come rain or shine.
WELLYPRINT PRINTED RAINBOOTS in BLACK SPOT ($74.95)
FIELDWELY GI GLOSSY RAIN BOOT WELLIES in DARK RED ($74.95)
EVEDON PREMIUM BOW WELLIES in OLIVE ($164.95)
The classic white spot, black background print elevates the boot into a desirable accessory— not just a weathered necessity. The side– buckle detail and enhanced tread grip ensure a steady stride.
Reminiscent of Dr. Martens, the field rain boot is glazed in a high–gloss finish and edged with a two–tone (dark navy and mustard yellow) expanding panel. Guaranteed to put a shine in your step, indeed.
Joules Premium Welly Collection is for the discerning welly wearer. Gently slowing away at the back and with the addition of a luxurious ribbon to heighten the elegance factor.

THE “RIGHT AS RAIN” COLLECTION This San Diego winter season, we’re never too far away from a rain cloud or three. Be prepared with 100% waterproof rainwear that never sacrifices style. For those inevitable showers, the Right as Rain collection of raincoats and accessories makes a heroic comeback following a largely successful AW15 season. Key pieces in the range include the Golightly pack–away waterproof parka in subtle navy spot or the Raina waterproof parka in the lovely marine navy floral print. Throw in a poncho for a festival or for protection against the elements while traversing soaked city streets. Whatever your preference, the Right as Rain collection is the ideal way to step into the Joules brand and stay one step ahead of the weather.
RAINA WATERPROOF PARKA in MARINE NAVY FLORAL ($244.95) This longer length parka–style rain coat is PU (polyurethane) coated and has taped seams to make it 100% waterproof. A drawstring hood, button cuffs and fleece lining keep the draughts out, while an inner drawstring designed to pull in the waist gives the coat shape.
PONCHO PRINTED SHOWERPROOF in SILVER POSY ($44.95) Perfect for unpredictable festival weather. The poncho is exceptionally roomy and packs neatly away in its own bag, plus it has a toggle and drawstring hood to keep its structure.

Kiss & Tell
THE BEST RED LIPS FOR THE SEASON OF LOVE By Juliet Saunders
I
t’s Valentine’s Day—one of the most anticipated or dreaded days of the year! You’ve got it all figured out: what you’re doing, what you’re wearing, who you’re spending it with. But maybe there’s one thing you’re struggling with—what lipstick color do you wear? Stick to a few simple rules and you’ll have the most gorgeous pout in town. An issue that some may run into is figuring out which kind of red lipstick looks good on different skin tones. It’s not as simple as pale skin or dark skin; undertones also play a part in whether the color looks good on you. The most important thing to remember is that not every color will look the same on every woman. Just play around with your colors and see what works for you. Crimson lips looks great on pale skin, wine looks beautiful on medium complexions and even darker complexions can get away with vampy lips.
Light Wash of Color If you’re not ready to jump straight into a bold red lip, try something that gives your lips a light wash of color. A sheer lipstick or gloss can provide pretty color without overpowering your look—or making you uncomfortable. The light color can make anyone appear effortless, but still glamorous. What: Clinique Superbalm Moisturizing Gloss in Black Honey, $16.50, available at Sephora, Ulta and Nordstrom. Also available in lipstick form. Good For: Medium skin tones. What: Clinique Chubby Stick Intense Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in any of the red or plum shades, $17, available at Sephora, Ulta and clinique.com. Good For: All skin tones.

Kiss–Proof Pout Liquid lipsticks are basically the most popular beauty trend of 2015 that are sure to carry through 2016. Liquid lipsticks provide more than just the convenience of lipstick in a tube; it’s a long–lasting highly pigmented magical wand, which usually comes off mostly matte. The transfer rate is low, so you won’t look vain touching up your makeup all night. It’s worry free! What: Kat Von D, Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Outlaw or Underage Red, $20, available at Sephora. Good For: Medium skin, dark skin. What: Ofra Cosmetics Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Havana Nights, $19.90, available at ofracosmetics.com Good For: All skin tones.
Matte but Not Flat Matte lipsticks are all the rage. The look that matte lipsticks give are similar to those of liquid lipsticks, but without the same staying power. Pairing a matte lipstick with a warmer or glow-y look will make any woman look more desirable in a candlelit dining room. What: Urban Decay Matte Revolution Lipstick in Bad Blood, matching 24/7 Glide on Lip Pencil of the same name, $20 and $22, available at urbandecay.com, Sephora and Ulta. Good For: Pale skin, medium skin. What: NARS Pure Matte Lipstick, $27, available at Sephora and narscostmetics.com. This brand offers six different red colors that will surely be a compliment to anyone’s Valentine’s look. Good For: All skin tones.

High Shine A lot of women associate shiny lips with femininity. High shine glosses can be a perfect topper to any look. If it’s a good brand, these can also be creamy feeling without the tacky feeling of older style lip glosses. What: Smashbox Be Legendary Lip Gloss in Legendary or Disco Rose, $20, available at smashbox. com and Ulta. Good For: All skin tones. What: Hourglass Extreme High Shine Lip Gloss in Primal, Siren or Icon, $28, available at Sephora and hourglasscosmetics.com. Good For: All skin tones.
Good Old Fashioned Lipstick There’s nothing quite like a great lipstick formula. It can be creamy, hydrating and highly pigmented. The best part is, it won’t stain your lips. Lipsticks are easy to apply and easy to touch up. The cons are smudging while eating… or kissing. Go ahead and give your Valentine a big smooch on the cheek to show off your beautiful color. What: Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick, $30, esteelauder.com. This brand offers almost 10 different red colors in this line! Good For: All skin tones. What: Lancome L’ABSOLU ROUGE, $30.50, available at Sephora, Ulta and lancome-usa.com. This brand offers an array of great colors! Good For: All skin tones.

DARING
EXHILARATING DATES THRILL THIS VALENTINE’S DAY By Emily Glaser
T
here’s a big, big problem in modern dating. The past few years have turned date night out into boring night in; society—and probably your significant other—has embraced the “Netflix and chill” ideology, leaving us to spend night after night in a lazy stupor, physically buried in blankets and mentally buried in the latest binge series (I mean, who hasn’t seen Making a Murderer?). We’ve all essentially fallen into the sophomore slump of dating; we’re content to sit together in silence and allow our bodies—and our relationships—to sink into complacency.
This Valentine’s Day, we challenge you to break from the mold and do something daring with your date! Pushing yourself to your limits isn’t just good for your body, it’s good for your love. Studies prove that getting sweaty together can benefit not just your physical health, but the health of your relationship, too. And thrilling, exhilarating experiences in which you have to rely on your loved one for help or encouragement strengthen your bond. So get out there and explore San Diego with your sweetie! These activities are guaranteed to get your heart and blood pumping—outside the sheets.

FINE MAGAZINE WINE PROMOTION
You’re sitting in a dim restaurant across the candlelit table from that special someone. The waiter returns with the bottle of wine you’ve selected to go with your dinner. He works the corkscrew and with a soft pop, followed by a splash into the glass, the night just became magical. It continues to amaze us that something as simple and sublime as opening a bottle of wine can produce this instant effect on our emotions. It doesn’t matter if you prefer red or white or something in between, there is a wine out there for you. Here are a couple of bottles that are guaranteed to make your night magical.
Falkner Winery
As Valentine’s Day approaches, it’s time to think about a wonderful wine to share with your loved one. A Falkner wine that we promote for the occasion is our 2014 White Luscious Lips wine. This wine has the fruit qualities and sweetness that our guests describe as wonderful. For Valentine’s Day this great wine works well with many sweet desserts and especially some white chocolate dishes. At the winery we also use this wine as the weather warms to make a delicious white Sangria. Falkner Winery is one of the premier wineries in beautiful Temecula Valley. It is the painstaking effort of its owners, Ray and Loretta Falkner, who purchased the winery in June of 2000. The Falkner’s have created an environment with great wines (over 80% are awarded Gold or Silver Medals), fun atmosphere, an award–winning Pinnacle Restaurant, spectacular mountain top vistas, and entertaining and educational tours. The winery also specializes in elegantly catered parties and romantic wedding receptions. Adding to their already fun environment, Falkner Winery created a Crush Club segment to their list of wine clubs. This club offers easy drinking wines with a touch of sweetness, such as their Red Luscious Lips®, White Luscious Lips®, Irresistible Rosato, and Risqué Riesling. The winery also offers a monthly Wine Appreciation Class and private VIP tours and tastings. The winery offers wines tastings every day from 10am – 5pm and the Pinnacle Restaurant is open 11:30am to 3:30pm. For reservations or additional information, visit their website falknerwinery.com, call 951-676-8231, or email at info@falknerwinery.com.
Bernardo Winery
Introducing Bernardo Winery’s recently released 2014 Albarino | Syrah Rosado, a happy union of the fruity, luscious and bold Syrah with it’s French Rhone heritage and the crisp, refreshing and slightly citrusy Albarino. The Albarino grape, which originates from Spain, basks in the traditionally red-friendly San Diego terroir. According to winemaker Ross Rizzo, “The Albarino grape is such a versatile and underappreciated grape, especially in warmer climates like San Diego. Fortunatetly, it grows really well here and creates a beautifully lush canopy that provides great protection from the sun without really sacrificing any of its great tropical fruit characteristics. Albariño knows sun protection is key in San Diego wine grapes, so it brings along its dense canopy umbrella to protect it’s semi-fair skin and body from losing any of those delicious tropical fruit characteristics.” Behold, sun protection at it’s finest. In our Rosado Blend, created by Mr. Rizzo, the Albarino stands up to the Syrah well, creating a flavorful Rosé, lightly floral on the nose, on the palate, notes of cranberry and spring strawberry. It’s fresh, fruity and well-rounded, with a bold finish reminding you the Syrah is there. It pairs well with rich fish and seafood dishes, a creamy chicken and pasta or roasted vegetables. Keep in mind, the versatile Rosado pairs well with a wonderful date… this Winter-friendly Rosé will satisfy both of your palates and then some. Limited bottling, available while it lasts in the tasting room. Bernardowinery.com • 13330 Paseo del Verano San Diego 92128 • 858.487.1866

Addison Located in the heart of Del Mar, The Addison at The Grand Del Mar is the only five–star restaurant within San Diego. Though the restaurant isn’t cheap, dining at Addison isn’t about the ambiance or the view; it’s about the experience. Patrons are treated to an extensive, multi–course nightly tasting menu to be enjoyed over several hours. The various courses offer delectable flavor combinations meant to make your mouth water, and the menu changes seasonally. Addison is known for using seasonal California ingredients in their dishes. Even better, Addison has an extensive wine list, and the sommeliers know how to properly pair different glasses of wine with each course, producing ideal and complex flavor pairings. Take heed: Addison is one of the most expensive restaurants in San Diego, but for those who truly love food, dining here can be an unforgettable experience.
Bellamy’s What could be more romantic than classic French food? Located in Escondido, Bellamy’s is an upscale farm–to–table restaurant that serves predominantly French food. The ambiance of Bellamy’s is sweet and romantic. Bellamy’s offers soothing live music and an elegant decor. The main dining room of the restaurant looks very sleek and classic, with comfortable plush white chairs and simple soft lighting. Though Bellamy’s doesn’t have a stellar view or romantic terrace, their incredible dishes guarantee you won’t want to look at much other than your plate. They offer some delicious entrees—such as their pastas and their duck breast—but the Bellamy’s cuisine that really shines are their decadent desserts. From a crème brûlée to their chocolate mousse, Bellamy’s offers some truly to–die–for desserts. The stunning restaurant is offering a special prix fixe menu on Valentine’s Day with suggested wine pairings to give guests an idyllic experience.
Bertrand at Mister A’s Situated near Balboa Park, Bertrand at Mister A’s is an upscale restaurant that serves modern American cuisine. Bertrand at Mister A’s offers some decadent classics: braised short ribs, duck confit and rack of lamb, to name a few. However, what makes Bertrand at Mister A’s stand out as a romantic restaurant is the breathtaking view that it offers of the San Diego skyline and the bay. Bertrand at Mister A’s features an outdoor terrace that gives guests a flawless look at Downtown San Diego. Is it too chilly to sit on the terrace? That’s not a problem; the main dining room features large windows that look out at the city. No matter where patrons sit in Bertrand at Mister A’s, they are guaranteed to be treated to a spectacular view that can’t be found anywhere else in San Diego. FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

Wine & Dining RECIPE
Heat UP the Kitchen STAY IN THIS VALENTINE’S FOR A ROMANTIC ITALIAN FEAST By Deanna Smith
L
ove…Love…Love… the lyrics of John Lennon often stop me in my tracks, sending me into a swaying motion as my heart swells with dreamy emotion, my smile growing from ear to ear. I am immediately intoxicated with happy, loving feelings of hope. Hope for love, hope for peace and hope for whatever I need inspiration for at the time. Like music, food inspires me too. Creating a mouth–pleasing meal for my love is just as romantic as a silly love song. We’ve all heard the saying, “The best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” but what many men don’t realize is the same goes for women. You might be thinking, “I’m not that skilled in the culinary arts, and it takes all day to make a great meal.” Au contraire. One of my favorite, easy to make dinners is Baked Chicken Parmigiana; baking, rather than frying, provides all the taste with less calories, and locally grown organic tomatoes, garlic and basil makes it exceedingly healthy. Greet your love with a tasty cocktail and an appetizer, allowing you time for any last minute final preparations. With dinner, my first choice is a lovely Cabernet Sauvignon—robust and fruity on the pallet style, or if you would prefer, a lighter Pinot Noir. A well–crafted Pale Ale or Hefeweizen would satisfy any brew aficionado. Whatever your romantic style may be, Romeo and Juliet, Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe, or Jack and Diane, this taste bud tantalizing recipe is easy and will take just over an hour to make. You’ll have your Valentine eating out of your hand.

BAKED CHICKEN PARMIGIANA Ingredients 2 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves 2 cups low–fat buttermilk 1 cup Deanna’s Gluten Free Bread Crumbs 1 teaspoon granulated garlic 1 tablespoon Italian seasons ½ cup shredded Parmesan + 2 tablespoons ½ cup shredded Mozzarella + 2 tablespoons 2 cups marinara sauce 2 tablespoons chopped garlic Small bunch of fresh basil Small bunch of fresh parsley Extra virgin olive oil Directions Preheat oven to 350° F (175° C). Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper lightly greased with extra virgin olive oil. Set aside. Wash and pat dry chicken breast. Pour half the buttermilk into a large bowl, add chicken breasts and completely cover with remaining buttermilk. Set aside. Wash and pat dry 4 or 5 of the largest basil leaves— stack them on one another, biggest on bottom to smallest on top. Roll then into a cigar shape starting from the stem upwards to the tip, hold firm. With a sharp knife, slice very thin strips. In a small sauce pan, combine sliced basil with marinara sauce and chopped garlic. Bring to a boil, then simmer on low for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring intermittently.
OPENS FEBRUARY 13
In separate medium size bowl, add Deanna’s Gluten Free Bread Crumbs, granulated garlic and Italian seasons. Mix well, then add the Parmesan and Mozzarella. Mix thoroughly. Remove a chicken breast from buttermilk; dip into the bread crumb mix, generously covering both sides. Place coated chicken on prepared bake sheet. Repeat with remaining chicken breast. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. A few minutes before the chicken is ready, prepare two dinner plates with a hefty layer of the simmering marinara sauce in the center on which to rest your Chicken Parmigiana. Top with remaining tablespoons of Parmesan and Mozzarella cheese, garnish with a sprig of parsley. Parsley is to give you fresh breathe after your meal. Bon Appetite!

Mix graham cracker crumbs, sugar, cinnamon and butter. Press into the bottom of a 9–in springform pan. Let sit in the fridge for 30 minutes while you prepare other ingredients. In a food processor mix the package (10 oz) of frozen organic strawberries and cornstarch until well combined. Add this mixture to a saucepan and bring to a boil. condensed milk. Add lemon juice and vanilla extract. Beat in one egg at a time and blend slowly until you have a smooth consistency. Remove crust from fridge. Clean and slice each strawberry. Place strawberry slices vertically as a border around the crust. Carefully pour half of the cream cheese mixture over the crust. Spoon dollops of the strawberry preserve mixture onto cream cheese layer. Pour remaining cheesecake mixture on top of cake. Place remaining strawberry mixture in piping bag and squeeze small circles of the strawberry mixture around the top in a circular pattern. Next, take a toothpick and draw a line through each circle. This will result in a heart shaped pattern on top of your cheesecake. Bake in a 300 degree oven for 50 minutes or until center is set. In a medium saucepan, add ½ cup heavy cream and 4 oz semisweet or bittersweet
chocolate. Stir on medium–low heat until mixture resembles a smooth chocolate sauce. Remove from heat and set aside. Let cool and place in a piping bag or ziploc bag. Remove from oven and let cool for 20 minutes. Run a knife around the crust pan to loosen; cool for an additional hour. If possible, let sit in fridge overnight or for at least 4 hours. Remove from fridge and place strips of wax paper on dessert pedestal in a square pattern. Place cheesecake on top. (This will help to reduce the mess after the chocolate is drizzled on top and provide a final clean presentation.) Wash and clean package of organic strawberries. Make 3-4 slices vertical slices from each strawberry and place on top of cheesecake in a flower pattern. Take piping bag of chocolate ganache and drizzle in a circular pattern around cheesecake. Top the center with chocolate covered strawberries and enjoy!

LA QUINTA ARTS FESTIVAL IS STILL THE ULTIMATE FINE ART EXPERIENCE By Kathy Taylor Bauer
he world of fine art can be an intimidating one—but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! Join more than 20,000 art enthusiasts as they converge March 3rd through 6th for the highly–anticipated La Quinta Arts Festival. With art as the main attraction, the La Quinta Arts Festival showcases the finest in contemporary artworks presented by 220 of the nation’s premier artists hailing from 35 states, Canada and Argentina to exhibit their original works in ceramics, drawing and pastel, fiber/textile, glass, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and wood. From the hot, new up–and–comers to the accomplished masters, you will uncover remarkable treasures in every price range. After retaining its position as number one in national listings of fine art rankings for three straight years (2013, 2014, 2015), La Quinta Arts Festival has firmly established itself as a premier destination for arts and culture, primarily through its commitment to sustaining the superb quality of work and general prestige that its patrons have come to expect from this show year after year. Come experience what thousands of art patrons have been raving about for years. Here’s a preview of the 34th annual event staged on the visually stunning site of the La Quinta Civic Center Campus located a short drive east of legendary Palm Springs. You don’t have to be an art expert to know what you like—and you’re sure to discover that one special piece made just for you at the La Quinta Arts Festival. La Quinta Arts Festival 2016 Featured Artist Trés Taylor A contemporary self–taught mixed media painter living in Birmingham, Alabama, Taylor was a biochemist for over 20 years before he experienced somewhat of an epiphany upon interviewing Georgia folk artist R.A. Miller in 1999, which inspired him to begin his journey as a professional artist. At their core, his paintings are about spiritual seeking. He paints about love, divine love, peace and joy. His subjects are usually monks, couples and houses, but always they retain a symbolic relationship to the idea of love.

Taylor’s medium is usually tarpaper. The tarpaper enables him to draw freely, carving in a strong black line. He frequently employs layers of mud, sometimes Alabama red clay, that give his paintings a rich, yet raw texture. Trés has exhibited in Japan, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Louisiana, Florida and Pennsylvania. The Art of Entertainment Art alone does not a festival make; La Quinta Arts Festival is set to present a variety of performance and musical entertainers that will delight the crowds. This year’s daily line–up includes some returning favorites and surprising new attractions like Lana Chromium, a fine art body painter from San Diego—winner of GSNTV’s “Skin Wars”—who will demonstrate her extraordinary talents on Saturday, March 5th. Fabulous Festival Fare Art may feed the soul, but it takes great food (and refreshing libations) to satisfy the appetites generated by our festival goers! To this end, La Quinta Arts Festival has partnered with some of the top eateries around to offer the ultimate casual dining experience. Head over to Restaurant Row to find Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Fisherman’s Market & Grill and Shanghai Red’s or the Corner Pub for Westcoast Hofbrau brats and more, plus a wide selection of high–end craft beers and wine. Lighter fare will be available at Island Bar and Meadow Bar, along with well–known vendors E & E Pel’s Italian Ices and Brandini Toffee’s luscious hand–dipped ice cream. Stella Artois, the official beer of the La Quinta Arts Festival, will be served at all bar locations on site. Arts & Society PERFORMING ARTS Traditional Chinese celebrations take over the streets of San Diego during the annual Chinese New Year Food and Cultural Fair.
Year of the Monkey SAN DIEGO FÊTES CHINESE NEW YEAR By Erica Miner
T
his month San Diego kicks off the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Monkey with its 34th Annual 2016 San Diego Chinese New Year Food and Cultural Fair celebration. Unlike traditional “Western” Zodiac astrology, which represents each of the 12 months by a different sign from the stars, the Chinese lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, and lunar astrology represents each year of a rotating 12 year cycle with one of 12 different animals. The common belief is that people demonstrate characteristics of the animal under whose sign they are born. Sponsored by the San Diego Chinese Center and 50 other organizations, the 34th Annual 2016 San Diego Chinese New Year Food and Cultural Fair is scheduled for Saturday, February 13th and Sunday February 14th from 10 am to 5 pm, rain or shine, in the Asian Pacific thematic Historic District at Third Avenue and J Street in downtown San Diego. At this free, family–friendly event, which combines an annual cultural outreach program with a fundraising event to benefit SDCC’s year–round cultural programs and charitable services provided to the community, guests of all ages can enjoy the diverse rich cultural flavors of China while browsing a wide selection of Asian cultural gifts and cuisine in 50 food and commercial booths. The festivities also feature a wide variety of entertainment, including over two dozen performances of Chinese music, dance and qigong. After the success of last year’s fair, which boasted over 25,000 celebrants, SDCC president Kwong Hui eagerly anticipates this year’s festival. “We are excited to enter our fourth decade of celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year in downtown San Diego,” Hui says. “In 2016, we again welcome the San Diego community to share our celebration of the Year of the

Monkey—a time for family, friendship and giving thanks.” Where else in San Diego can one witness lion and dragon dances, continuous live performances on stage with martial arts demonstrations, acrobats, traditional Chinese music performances, folk dances and taiko drumming in one excitement–packed festival? Last year’s program included a Sock Hop sponsored by the Chinese Community Church, cash drawing giveaways and an opportunity drawing for valuable prizes. Other performances on last year’s slate of entertainment goodies included: Asian Story Theater; Chinese Dance Association; Indie Pop Rocker Ivan Cheong; singer/songwriter Kenny Eng; Lijun String Ensemble; and Guang Dong TV American singing contest winner Charisma Lam, along with her musical brothers Ivan Wong and Kenson Situ. According to SDCC entertainment chair Mack Lorden, this year’s schedule will be filled with even more exciting events. Artists include the Lucky Lion Dance troupe, Asian Story Theatre, Southern Sea Lion Dancers, Chinese Dance Association and Lijun String Ensemble. The Lucky Lion Dancers and Southern Sea Lion Dance Association’s lion dances received especially high marks from attendees at last year’s festival. Children can enjoy special festival activities created just for them. In addition to being invited to participate in creating masks in the Children’s Craft Area, they can march in the daily Lantern Parade, where little ones, who are encouraged to dress in Chinese apparel, have the unique opportunity to walk beside Chinese lions and a 25–foot dragon consisting of 11 people. (In Chinese culture, the dragon symbolizes good luck, power, wisdom and other auspicious attributes.) Once the initial celebrations have taken place, entertainment carries on throughout the year as lion and dragon dance troupes from Chinese martial schools or guilds visit Chinese community

homes and shops to perform the traditional “plucking of the greens” (cai ching) dance at celebrations such as birthdays, weddings and business opening events. Originally created over 30 years ago, the SDCC sought to establish a “Chinese Social Service Center” to provide services to seniors and new immigrants. Now based in the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association’s historic landmark building, SDCC has broadened its mission to include its now–expanded goals. Among the Center’s goals is the desire to promote Chinese culture and to enrich cultural awareness throughout the community, through collaborations with other organizations and careful and efficient use of the financial resources available to them. In addition to its mission of providing cultural programs and charitable services for the community at large, SDCC offers social services for needy Chinese seniors, children and families. Each year the Chinese Cultural Fair also sponsors a scholarship for a deserving student. Included among the festival’s sponsors are the City of San Diego Arts & Culture Commission, Sempra Energy, San Diego Union–Tribune, Barona Casino, Harrah’s Resort and Families with Children from China. For those who have a love of Chinese culture and a desire to give back to the community, the event is still looking for volunteers to help out. Contact SDCC Special Projects Manager Linh Du (619–540–8501 or linhpdu@gmail.com.) Details of the festival, including a fair map, information about the artists, an events and activities schedule and information about the diverse cuisine available, can be found at sdcny.weebly.com.

Romance & Awards
FEBRUARY MAY BE THE MONTH OF LOVE, BUT IT’S ALSO AWARDS SEASON By Bob Morey
W
e have two things that will keep our attention this month, the awards shows and our romance with them. You can’t turn a TV channel without seeing a promo for some awards show, all of which will culminate on the day when we’ll see who takes home the shiny golden guy named Oscar during the 88th Academy Awards ceremony on the 28th. Here in San Diego, it’s awards month as well. This month we have the 3rd Annual Cabaret Awards at the Horton Grand and The San Diego Theatre Critics Circle will present the 14th Annual Craig Noel Awards just a week later. I’m proud to say the diversity of the nominations for these awards are spread around the county from our large, nationally–known companies to our smaller, more obscure companies. Size didn’t matter when it came to the vast range of productions from these companies this year. We may be used to the upcoming Beer Week and Restaurant Week, but now an intrepid group of theaters have bound together to launch the first ever San Diego Theatre Week from the 22nd to the 28th. “The performing arts are one of San Diego’s greatest treasures,” says D. Candis Paule, President of the San Diego Performing Arts League. “Just as Restaurant Week is a week for foodies to explore new culinary options while saving money, our vision for Theatre Week is audience members will take advantage of the opportunity to discover new theatre companies and unforgettable arts experiences. It’s the
82

perfect chance to try out something new.” With over 30 theaters participating, there’s no reason not to see a show, maybe even at a theatre you haven’t been to yet. Most theatres will be performing during the special week, but even organizations without events that week will have special offers, whether for present or future performances. With all the talk about awards over the past couple of weeks, I was recently asked how the Academy Award became known as Oscar. There are several stories that are told, but I feel the best and most credible are these two. One is the tale surrounding Bette Davis. Winning the Best Actress category in 1935, she was handed the statue and looked at it from the backside and said, “This looks like my husband Oscar” (Named for band leader Harmon Oscar Nelson). The other story is that the Academy’s Executive Secretary, Margaret Herrick, saw the award in 1931 and said it reminded her of her “Uncle Oscar” (a nickname for her cousin Oscar Pierce). Sidney Skolsky, a newspaper columnist, overheard the comment and used the name “Oscar” in his byline, “Employees have affectionately dubbed their famous statuette ‘Oscar’.” In 1939, The Academy officially adopted “Oscar” as the name for this very prestigious award. Enjoy awards month this year! Thank you to all of the companies for all your hard work over the last year that we enjoyed so much. To the nominees, congratulations and good luck!
