Design History Erté Fine Jewelry By: Marie Taggart

The Inspiration Known the world over as Erté, Romain de Tirtoff is often called the father of Art Deco. Erté Fine Jewelry is a heritage brand based on Erté’s creative reproductions and artistic archive—featuring a fusion of the curvilinear designs of Art Nouveau with the modern geometrical designs of Cubism. Aside from a heavy hand in the fashion industry, Erté’s legacy has been one of elegance and timeless beauty.

“The three graces of a woman are beauty, charm and elegance. The most important of them is elegance.” —Erté

The Legacy Erté’s career spanned over 70 years, from blossoming in the 1920s to ending by virtue of his death in 1990. As the widely acknowledged master of Art Deco in the 1920s and ‘30s, he created exuberantly fanciful costumes in his Paris studio for Anna Pavlova, Mrs. William Randolph Hearst and Josephine Baker.

CONQUER YOUR CLOSET Before you dive in, gather what you need. 1 Time Time: Take at least two to four hours. If you are rushed, then you will end up frustrated and half-finished.

2 A Clean Room A clean room: Make your bed, put away your laundry and start with a blank slate.

3 A Mirror A full-length mirror: Try on and examine clothing combinations to determine what looks best.

4 Trash Bags Use heavy-duty bags that are best for packing up and moving out throwaways and giveaways.

E

The Explanation. very day, whether we want them to or not, our clothes make a statement about who we are, and they have the power to affect our body language and how we feel.

How many times have you purchased a new outfit and, as a result, physically felt a

shift in your demeanor? It’s crazy how a great-fitting pair of jeans can affect us.

In light of this, it’s important to put a little effort into planning your wardrobe.

But this doesn’t mean going out and purchasing a bunch of random pieces to fill your closet.

Despite what many might believe, having more clothes doesn’t necessarily mean having more choices.

More often than not, an unorganized closet that gets built up year after year just ends up

leaving us feeling overwhelmed. Faced with this mess, our closets progressively fill with pieces that we don’t ever wear, as we instead grab that familiar shirt-and-pants combination.

In this way, a smaller number of well-thought-out clothing items can actually mean you end up

wearing more outfit combinations.

You want your wardrobe to work for you.

5 Organizing Supplies Try matching hangers and storage bins, such as the clear variety that you can store under the bed or on closet shelves.

Your closet should help put together an outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable,

and that makes a positive impression on others.

If your wardrobe doesn’t do this for you, it’s time to rebuild it properly into one that embodies

your sense of fashion, contains all your essentials and comes across as modern and exciting. What is the best way to get there? Edit, plan, and shop.

Carlsbad

2972 State St.

The Edit. Step 1 Store the easy items like winter clothing, pieces with sentimental value and special-occasion wear.

Step 2 Decide what stays. In order to determine what you should keep and what you should eliminate, ask yourself: 1. Have I worn this outfit in the last year? 2. Does it fit me? 3. Do I have a lot of similar pieces? 4. Is it worn out? 5. Is it outdated? 6. Do I feel good when I wear it? 7. Does it enhance the way I look? Answering such questions frankly should help you clarify which clothing items you are willing to part with and which items you think are still working for you.

Step 3 Take out the remaining clothes and sort them. Pull everything from your closet and drawers, and organize the items into groups.

Step 4 Trash the throwaways. 28 FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines

The Plan. After editing, follow these Wardrobe Rules for all major fashion buys 1. Be blunt about your lifestyle, only purchasing what you love and what makes you feel confident. Your clothes should be in sync with your lifestyle. If you are a woman who spends her day moving in 30 various directions, then a wardrobe of skirts and six-inch pumps is probably not the best choice. 2. Stick to a color theme. This allows for ideal mixing and matching, which keeps your clothing feeling fresh. 3. Choose quality over quantity. Buy less but buy the best, whatever your “best is. Expensive yet poorly-fitting clothing is a waste. After you have abided by these basic guidelines, get your core pieces, such as a pencil skirt, blazer, little black dress, etc., in place, and then indulge in purchasing more fun and on-trend pieces.

Cool & Casual

Don’t be afraid to express the cooler shades of spring with these San Diego inspired looks.

Accessory Matters

Be Bold

Try matching the color of your belt with the color of your shoes. Light brown leather looks amazing with this coastal blue blazer.

Trending on the runway were shades of pink and rose. This seasonal shade isn’t just for the ladies. Embrace new colors in your wardrobe like this soft, rose colored blazer and white slacks.

Get Square Regardless of the season, a pocket square is always a classy touch. But the texture and color should never be too similar to your tie. Ditch the tie and pair blue stripes with a sea-foam green blazer.

Spring Fashion

REVIEW

By Nicole Lawrence

2014

Standout looks from Milan & Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014

Valentino

An impromptu visit to the Rome Opera

workshops triggered the imaginations of Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli

to create another breathtaking Valentino

collection. But where their particular brand of style typically speaks to the upper echelons of the world’s most glamorous women, the creative directors moved in a new direction

this season. Blending two worlds—opera with street, stage with city—Valentino’s characteristic kind of grand scale opulence

was present in the collection, but there

was also a purity present in the collection’s elegant lines, as well as a real sense of ease

and youthfulness that ran through. A globalchic collection, the regal embellishments and ladylike silhouettes brought a romantic take

to Paris Fashion Week, as Chiuri and Piccioli set a new standard in their tenure here as ready-to-wear designers.

34 FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines

Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana’s signature Sicilian glamour was given a generous dose of dazzle and sparkle

this

season.

A

collection

that

oozed luxury, it was an imaginary journey, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana said,

to rediscover ancient Sicily. To start, simple silk dresses, printed in sepia hues with post-

pretty crumbling columns, Greek temples and theaters. Later, the designers’ archaeological

dig also brought up ancient gold coins, which were blown up to the size of tea plates and jointed together to make impressive waist

cinchers, or chain-mailed into a jingling

minidress (not exactly a theme you would

expect from a company struggling with financial troubles). And what spring collection would be complete without florals? Sicilian almond blossoms in 3D collaged sheer gowns that revealed delectable lace undergarments. Finally, when every model stepped out in gold—from lace to other fabrics encrusted

in faceted crystals, or crafted in laser-cut leather—it was jaw-dropping.

[continued from page 35]

Elie Saab

Elie Saab found inspiration for his collection

with the notion of a “lace garden.” The designer’s

signature

romanticism

and

feminine embellishments were in full bloom

with botanic prints and lace trimmings garnishing everything from tops to gowns.

The color palette also reflected an outdoorsy sentiment with a blend of red, rose and

verdant green. But not everything in the

collection was light and ethereal. The Saab women got glam in the final portion of the

collection, which introduced black, evoking a midnight seduction in full skirts and bustier tops nipped at the waist. No matter

if one prefers ballooning, loose, free-flowing

silhouettes, cinched-at-the-waist pieces, long

and slinky or lingerie-inspired dresses, Saab

showed 60 options to please just about any woman.

Roberto Cavalli

Roberto Cavalli likes his women confident, glamorous, powerful and with a wild side. This

season

his

collection,

titled

“The

Projection of a Dream,” was inspired by the

cinematography of the silver screen, in a projection of femininity. While a handful

of patterns came into play, the focus was

on a subdued color palette of white, black, mint, blush pink, and gold, intensified by an onslaught of alluring textures. Fantastic fur,

light catching beads and open-weave designs all made an appearance, as did tasseled fringe and sparkling sequins, presented in long and loose silhouettes.

Alexander Wang

The bumping ’90s hip-hop sound track

foreshadowed the collection of Alexander

Wang, inspired by ’90s street wear and

logomania. Menswear was the jumping-off point of the collection, with classic suiting

being used in everything from spaghettistrapped slip dresses to the waistbands of

leather shorts. He even included boxers as

street wear. Developing his own version of ’90 s’ logomania, Wang’s genius laser-cut

branding was another highlight of his show, branding dresses, waistbands and jackets

with graphic blocky font; the branding was even cut up the side of elbow-length gloves. But the crowd favorite seems to have been

his tongue-in-cheek tops (specifically, a sheer

sweater) that had parental advisory labels

across the breast areas—paying homage to the rebellious ’90s of hard-core rock, youth and everything that is edgy and cool.

he was taller than I thought she would be as she walked up the studio stairs with her husband and young son. Dressed in all black,

draped flowing fabrics surrounding her, she might have been tall but she was every bit as graceful as one might expect from a pageant queen. Joyce Giraud is beautiful as she explains to me that she almost canceled the photo shoot because she wasn’t feeling well. But Joyce is a professional, so, into hair and make-up she went. As she kissed her son and husband adios, her Latin accent seemed tinged with sadness—she would not be joining them on their play date in San Diego as she would have to sit around all day and be fabulous for photographer Marissa Boucher. Don’t get it twisted, it’s hard work to be beautiful, a truth Joyce knows all too well. Irony has a funny way of expressing itself in adulthood. “When I was a kid, they didn’t have a label for it,” she explained. They would just call it teasing. They would call me ‘olive oil’ or make fun of how thin I was—can you believe I’ve been this tall since I was 12 years old?” She sat across from me in hair curlers, her nose a little pink from what was apparently a cold she was trying to smile through with some positive [continued on page 48]

A pasta dish that will surely become a new family favorite! Recipe and food photo by Maria Desiderata Montana Kale is no longer a boring garnish. I like to quickly sauté it so that it retains its vital nutrients of vitamins K, A and C. while still tasting utterly delicious. Paired with crispy pancetta and Pecorino Romano cheese, this healthy pasta dish is sure to become a family favorite. Buon Appetito!

Casare With Crispy Pancetta and Wilted Red Kale Ingredients • 1 pound Casarecce pasta, cooked according to package instructions

(Serves 6-8)

Instructions for the wilted kale: Heat 1 tbsp. of oil in the same sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add scallions and cook, stirring often, for

• 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil, divided

just a few seconds. Add kale and season with salt. Cook

• 4 oz. pancetta, finely diced

kale until it is wilted, about 4 minutes.

• 1 clove garlic, crushed • 3 scallions, finely chopped • 2 cups roughly chopped red kale, well-washed and trimmed of tough stems • Sea salt, to taste • ½ cup grated Pecorino Romano cheese Instructions for the pancetta: Heat 1 tbsp. of oil in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add pancetta and cook, stirring often, until crispy. Remove pan from heat and add garlic, stirring until just fragrant. Remove pancetta with a slotted spoon and place onto a small plate lined with a paper towel.

Instructions to serve: Add a portion of pasta to each serving bowl. Top with some of the kale and pancetta. Garnish with Pecorino Romano cheese.

Chefs tip: Feel free to substitute thick cut bacon instead of pancetta in this recipe.
