WRITE–IN THE 76TH WITH THOMAS KROUSE By Bob Morey
We are approaching that fateful day when we fill out our ballots and drop them in the mail or return them to the polls, then watch the results roll in on the evening of June 7th. But there’s often a harried history leading up to that day; that’s certainly the case with the 76th Assembly District. In 2015, the current 76th District Assemblyman Rocky Chavez announced that he was making a run for the US Senate being vacated by Barbara Boxer, which opened the door for Phil Graham (the stepson of former San Diego Mayor, US Senator and Governor of California Pete Wilson) and Oceanside City Councilman Jerry Kern to file for a run for the open assembly seat, and it looked as if they would run unopposed and face off in the November general election. But in February, Chavez announced he was dropping out of the Senate race when it became apparent he had little chance of making it past the June Primary. Since the Chavez announcement, both Graham and Kern have dropped out of the race, leaving Chavez as the sole candidate in the 76th—or is he? Enter write–in candidate Thomas Krouse. A California native, Krouse grew up in Half Moon Bay, a town known for the Mavericks surf competition and has a population of less than 12,000. He went on to earn his B.A. in Economics from Stanford University in 1990 and his M.B.A. from the University of Southern California in 2001. He also attended the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in 2003. Professionally, Krouse holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. He has worked in finance, as an entrepreneur and in the education field for 25 years. I recently spent some time with Thomas, and I have to say, I like the guy and what he stands for. This is the second time he has decided to toss his name in the hat for the 76th, following a run in 2014 where he received a third of the votes, even after being outspent by at least 35 to 1. “As more and more Californians understand that our state government is functionally no longer accountable to its citizens,” Krouse said. “I am running to help restore that accountability without which our taxes will simply keep going up, and our job
competitiveness and quality of life will keep going down.” Krouse continued, “Measure A in Carlsbad is a perfect example of the dysfunction, lack of transparency and dishonesty in government that people are so sick and tired of. Measure A, however, had a happy ending; the community was so shocked and angry that we were able to quickly organize and launch a successful six month effort to demand a vote on an initiative that 12,000 Carlsbad residents had petitioned for and then win a special election on this initiative despite being outspent over 100 to 1 by the special interests and crony capitalists trying to jam it past the people.” We asked Candidate Krouse what he offers and watched his face light up. “I bring a range of real–world experience in finance, small business, technology development, health care and higher education, all of which I can use to benefit California by uncovering dysfunction and waste in our state’s agencies so that they can operate more effectively and more efficiently.” He added, “Between the tens of millions of dollars in special interest lobbying, the backroom schemes of the two major political parties, and SuperPAC media blitzes, the voice and will of the people is more often than not drowned out. I am running to serve the people, not the fat cats, and to prove to my fellow Californians that when we work together, we can take our government back from those who bought it.” Dysfunction is a term often applied to the recent routines in Sacramento, routines Krouse is quick to decry. “With the State of California wasting billions of dollars regularly on politically– motivated projects like the dysfunctional and misrepresented Crazy Train and numerous wasteful Information Technology projects, California becomes less and less competitive on a daily basis, and those people who depend on essential services, like seniors, veterans and children, are not receiving the attention and assistance that they deserve,” Krouse passionately explained. “And Californians as a whole are not receiving the value of services and opportunities that we are paying for. I am running,
knowing that one single member of the State Assembly cannot turn our dysfunctional and aloof State Government around— but we have to start somewhere to build a working coalition of fair–minded public officials who will use common sense, not political sensibilities, when fulfilling their duty to the people. “ Unlike many politicians, Krouse is thinking about the big picture. “We will only succeed in taking our government and our future back from exploitive special interests if we elect enough like–minded representatives of the people at all levels of government who will put America and its people first. I truly believe that the role of elected officials is to listen to and to represent all of the citizens in their district regardless of whom they voted for, or if they voted at all. People have been so disgusted by what they have seen evolve in politics over the last 30 to 40 years that many have stopped participating. We will not establish enduring accountability in government until we bring these people back into the political process with the knowledge that their votes and their voices matter, and they do.” Krouse’s words are inspirational for people of all backgrounds; he’s proud to be endorsed by leading local Democrats, Republicans and independents, as well as by the Veterans Party of America. Krouse strongly believes that the purpose of the California government lies in its work for the people. “This is not a victory that can be won by one party or the other; there is
simply too much financial incentive to sell out once one party or the other achieves control of the government. Right now, our government is not under the control of its people, but of a small cadre of political party bosses and special interests. The outcome of this is self–evident. People are disgusted with it, frustrated and uncertain about how to fix the problem. The central path forward is to elect people who will represent all of the people’s interests in an open and fair– minded way with transparent common sense solutions. That is what I am here to do, and that is what I am offering to the people in Assembly District 76.” Thomas Krouse is a write–in candidate on your June ballot, and you will most likely see his name on the General Election ballot in November. If that is the case, then the 76th Assembly District may see a new representative taking a seat in Sacramento next January.

The look on the face of my friend’s 18–year–old son was priceless. I had just asked Danny if he’d like to go for a ride in the new 2016 Jaguar XF, and you would’ve thought that he’d just won the lottery, been asked out by the prettiest girl in class and been offered a
scholarship to an Ivy League school—all at that same moment. It was priceless. Designed with a look of sheer elegance and sophistication, the Jaguar XF demands attention wherever it travels. Even though it carries a 340 horsepower, V–6 engine, the XF won’t attract attention with its engine sound, like that of a ferocious Ferrari or roaring Lamborghini; instead, it draws you in with a look and stately style, turning the heads of those who enjoy a refined taste and grace in their everyday lives. In 1910, on the fringe of newborn Balboa Park, architect Norman Foote Marsh unveiled the Park Place Methodist Episcopal Church, an acclaimed structure known as “The Abbey.” This striking embodiment of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture boasts a dozen stained glass windows, and is topped with a triumphant statue of Gabriel. The building is believed to be the only classical-revival structure still standing in San Diego. The Abbey is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, an enormous honor reserved for a limited number of places. Today, The Abbey on Fifth is a private facility managed by Hornblower Cruises & Events, recipients of the prestigious “Finest Service Award.” Two domed, stained glass skylights bathe the room in a pale glow, while the stained glass windows cast a heavenly light. The feel is a Renaissance cathedral with dark, polished redwood molding and woodwork. The Abbey is a full-service facility, so after a ceremony up to 300 guests are treated to an elegant reception. Gourmet cuisine is prepared on-site, where bread has been broken and wine shared for 100 years. The services of a fulltime wedding coordinator are also available to help you make the most of this unique location.

ut that smooth look and elegant exterior design is only the beginning of the XF’s story. The second generation Jaguar XF sedan features a lighter weight, aluminum–intensive architecture that provides drivers with a coupe–like profile, yet has more interior space than the previous model, adding comfort and legroom for all passengers—front seat or back. My friend Danny chose to sit shotgun, of course, where he could not only experience the thrill of the open road, but also play with the new Jaguar InControl Touch Pro infotainment system, which offers a 10.2–inch touchscreen that makes for easy connections with satellite radio, smart phones and the navigation system. In fact, the entire interior seems to come alive as you ease into the XF’s driver’s seat and push the start button. The side air vents silently open, like eyelids awakening from a deep sleep, as the round shifter rises up from the center console, ready to be turned into one of four driving modes: Normal, Winter, ECO and Dynamic. This feature offers quicker up–shifts and more dynamic down– shifting for those who enjoy speed—or just showing off to an 18–year–old. The XF’s all–wheel drive utilizes an intelligent driveline system to deliver torque on demand and an optimum balance of performance and all–weather capability. Another high–tech feature of note is the holographic heads–up display that utilizes tiny lasers to parade speed and navigation information across the windshield, giving the driver instant data without the need to look down from the road ahead. You might think that you are flying a fighter jet, just without the wings. But before you take off, there are a few things to learn about flying this extraordinary XF. The first is that the brake and gas pedals are placed unusually close together—or at the same level—in order to enhance the race–car type of dynamics of the Jaguar. This can lead to some foot–placed confusion when getting to know the car, with brakes and gas being applied at the same time—not something to take lightly when coming to a stop. An additional auto start/stop feature is designed to save fuel economy, but may be a little distracting when driving in stop–and–go traffic snarls. Fortunately, a simple touch of a button removes this feature for the remainder of your journey. Speaking of fuel economy, Jaguar’s new weight–saving technologies contribute to a significant improvement, with the V6 rear wheel drive model delivering up to 30 miles per gallon on the highway. There’s also an all–wheel–drive model XF that is equipped with optional Adaptive Dynamics, which is designed to distinguish between different types of surfaces for additional traction. Both the RWD and AWD models come with standard all–surface control that helps enable a smooth take off on low–friction surfaces like snow and ice. Another high–tech safety feature is the XF’s lane–keeping assist system that gently nudges the car into the center of your freeway lane with little or no driver input. As with all Jaguar models, the XF comes with available Jaguar EliteCare warranty program, which covers the car for five years or 60,000 miles. The starting price for the luxurious Jaguar XF is a tremendously reasonable $51,900. facebook.com/FINEmagazines • FINEsd.com

Life of the Pre–Wedding Party Unique Bachelor and Bachelorette Parties By Jess Yacovelle
Before there’s a big day, there’s a big night. One last night before the end of your freedom, one last night before you’re perpetually tied to the love of your life. Nowadays, bachelor and bachelorette parties have become almost stereotypically ridiculous in their wild and raucous fashion, filled with strip clubs, bars and burlesque shows. For those of you who want a classy, unique or even relaxed day out with your closest friends instead, fear not! We’ve compiled a list of the most unique bachelor and bachelorette parties around. From a trip to a winery to a pampered day at the spa, you’ll have a night—or day—to remember.
The Hornblower
Two words: private yacht. Have you always dreamed of sailing the high seas with your best buds, sipping champagne and admiring the endless horizon? There’s no better time to make that dream a reality than on one of your last days of freedom. The Hornblower’s cachet of private yachts is ready to take your bachelor or bachelorette party to the water for a three hour adventure! Board and savor the taste of champagne and hors d’oeuvre, then choose from black jack or Texas hold’em, a Coronado scavenger hunt, blind wine tasting game or limo service to the Gaslamp. A chartered yacht is the perfect way to start your party off with a bang or just to enjoy those sweet hours of premarital bliss.

Home to a myriad of gorgeous parks and beaches, Coronado Island boasts something for everyone. Spend the day laying out on the beach, soaking up the rays. Surf or snorkel in the cool ocean water. Rent a sailboat or catamaran for the day through local companies like Aola Catamaran or Action Sports. Need a break from the outdoor mayhem? Swing by the Hotel Del Coronado to grab a drink and relax at the bar. Coronado is the perfect spot for any outdoorsy brides or grooms to host their dream pre–wedding parties!
Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Course
Not everyone likes a rough and rowdy bachelor party filled with bar–hopping and debauchery. For a refined and relaxed afternoon with your friends, tee off at the Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Course. This 18–hole championship golf course is the premiere San Diego golf course to visit. Recently renovated, the Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Course has previously hosted PGA and LPGA events. Every little girl dreams of her wedding day, but no one dreams of all the stress that can build up as you prepare to take that trip down the aisle. Planning your wedding—from favors to the feast to flowers— can be so overwhelming that you forget to plan for yourself. Every bride wants to look her best on her big day, so we’ve put together a quick and easy list of the most important things to keep you on track. Tackle these to–dos early on and you’ll be that beautiful bride you’ve always dreamed of !

CLEAR UP YOUR SKIN Prep Time: 6–8 Months You won’t want to wait until a week before your wedding to start getting your skin in tip–top shape. After all, your skin won’t change dramatically overnight. Explore your options at least six months ahead of the big day. Test out your current products and keep track of what is or isn’t working. And always feel free to go the natural route! Diluting unfiltered apple cider vinegar works great for curing most acne issues. The pungent vinegar kills bacteria, gets rid of dead skin cells and removes unwanted dirt, oil and makeup. If you’re having stubborn skin issues, visit your dermatologist to see what your best options are. And of course, keep your skin hydrated by getting in the habit of drinking water regularly. TEST YOUR HAIRCUT AND COLOR Prep Time: 4–5 Months Wedding preparation involves a lot of trial runs, and a trial run for your hair isn’t any different. If you decide you want to change up your hair style, test it out at least four months before your wedding day to allow time for trial and error. For the best results, nix the idea of box dye and book an appointment at a
companies like Crest or Rembrandt. A less drastic option could be a teeth–whitening toothpaste to gradually achieve pearly whites. It’s important to note that whitening your teeth can make your teeth very sensitive, no matter how you whiten them—so don’t do it hours before you step up to the altar. EXPLORE OPTIONS FOR SPRAY TANS Prep Time: 2–3 Months Skip the beds and laying out by the pool! Spray tans are the way to go for your wedding, and it’s the safest option for your skin. If you’re thinking of trying spray tans at home, you will want to begin testing out products in advance, like Sally Hansen’s Airbrush Legs, to perfect the technique and ensure you are getting the color payoff you want. If you want a professional spray tan, it’s best to test out salons so you can make sure that you are achieving the tan level you want and that it is not going to ruin any of your precious wedding garments! START YOUR NEW EXERCISE PLAN Prep Time: 6–12 Months Establish a great workout routine at least six months before There’s a lot of prep that goes into perfecting your big day, but start early and you can have the fairytale wedding you’ve always wanted!
trusted salon—your hair will thank you in the long run. If you plan on getting your hair professionally done for your wedding day, make sure to book a trial run at least a month before. WHITEN TEETH Prep Time: 1– 2 Months If you realize that your teeth lack a certain shine, take these steps to brighten up your smile at least a month before the big day. Getting your teeth whitened professionally is a great option, just make sure to book an appointment with your dentist. You can also go for at–home whitening kits from
your wedding date. Activities like running or yoga will be your best bet; these workouts break a sweat and alleviate that pre–wedding stress. Don’t ever feel like you need to crash diet or starve yourself to lose the weight! This is why starting a healthy workout routine sooner than later is so important. Losing a lot of weight after your dress alterations can be a little risky because you won’t know if you have enough time to get your dress taken in. If you’re not looking to lose weight, getting into the habit of a workout routine is beneficial to your overall health and can help you maintain your weight so there aren’t any hiccups when those bells start ringing.

FIVE UNIQUE PLACES TO GET MARRIED IN SAN DIEGO
A Nice Day for a
Winsome Wedding
BY ANDREW GRANT
Spring is finally here, and that means a lot of things: fresh flowers, warm days, the yearly crack at unpacking the closet and, of course, weddings. Everyone wants their wedding to be something special, something that you, your spouse and all your guests will remember for years to come. There are plenty of ways to set your wedding apart, but one way to ensure your big day is one they never forget is to have a unique venue. Getting married in a church is a time–honored tradition, the beach can be amazingly romantic, outside with nature all around is a beautiful option—but these are all played–out, ho–hum choices you’ve seen a dozen times before. Maybe you like to set yourself apart, live life on the edge, forge a new path. If you’re one of those people, boy do we have the list for you! Here are five incredible and utterly unique places that ensure your big day will be the event of a lifetime. 56
FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines
The first venue on our list will leave guests speechless as they step through the door—or in this case, the elevator. The University Club (above and left) Atop Symphony Towers may have some of the best views in all of San Diego. Situated right in the heart of the city at 750 B Street, your guests will enjoy views that stretch out all the way to the Pacific as they dine on incredible food, like sea bass, mushroom soup and lobster. If you like what you see but are a little overwhelmed by the process of actually having to plan a wedding, fear not! Part of the benefit of planning a wedding at this venue is the staff that comes with it. Personalized invitations and napkins, live entertainment and the cake—the staff at the club is more than happy to make sure that your big day is one you will remember for the rest of your life.
If you’re looking for a venue with a definitive vintage feel, consider the Sunset Temple (below), which unapologetically oozes style from every pore the moment you walk in the door. Market lights line the walls and a rich emerald curtain flanks the stage, making the Sunset Temple feel more like it belongs in Paris in the ‘20s, rather than in the north end of San Diego. If you choose this venue, you get more than just the incredible vintage charm. Planning services include lighting and technical support, farm–to–table menus and vintage decorations. If you and your betrothed squeal when you see a folding camera, have an antique typewriter just because of the patter of the keys and prefer to hear music played on vinyl, the Sunset Temple is the venue just for you.

If you think your significant other is the peak of your life, what better way to show that than starting your life together at the top of a mountain? That’s exactly what getting married in the Mt. Helix Park (above) allows. Situated at the top of Mt. Helix, this venue offers breathtaking outdoor views of San Diego and its surrounding countryside. Here, a variety of wedding packages are customized to your needs, from an intimate affair with a set of simple chairs and a runner for the bride to walk down, to a grand stone amphitheater where all your friends and relatives can watch your big day. Brides and grooms receive personal attention from the park’s wedding coordinator to ensure every detail of their special day is planned and executed to perfection. But the reality is that what makes this a singular wedding choice is the chance to speak your vows into the fresh mountain air, surrounded by 360 degrees of spectacular views.
Mountains are good and all, but perhaps you’re more of the indoor, contemplative sort. Did you love the Louvre and have a Starry Night case on your phone? Then the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (below and bottom left on opposite page) might just be the perfect place for your wedding. Wedding parties can range in size, including huge events with dinner and dancing in the spectacular Axline Court and small, private affairs in ceremonies that look out over the ocean. The museum actually has three areas that can be used for weddings to ensure that the setting is perfect for the size of your event. Add to that private viewings of the galleries for your guests during the reception and your wedding here is sure to have them talking for years to come.

Maybe your significant other is a huge animal lover? Does he have a subscription to National Geographic? Is Animal Planet her default cable channel? Or maybe you and your spouse–to–be think it would be amazing to exchange your vows while cheetahs and lions look on? If so, a wedding at the San Diego Safari Park (right row of photos) may be just what you’re looking for. The Safari Park offers a wide array of venues, like a calm, picturesque lagoon and a longhouse with tigers that keep a wary eye on guests. A wedding at the Safari Park will be one you, and your guests, will never forget. The park has a history of putting on spectacular weddings and yours will certainly live up to their pedigree. The staff at the park are professional event planners and will work with you to ensure that your special day is one that will have people talking about for years to come. And who knows, if you’re lucky, you may have a few additional four–legged guests at the reception.
Your wedding day is undoubtedly one of the biggest days of your life, but it’s just the first step on a lifelong journey. With any of these venues, you’ll be well on your way to your very own happily ever after.

UNIQUE HONEYMOON HOTSPOTS
Typical honeymoons are wondrous in their own right, but in a time of celebrating change, many of us are searching for something a bit more unique than those traditional get–aways. This post–nuptial launch into newly–wedded bliss has transformed over the years; it’s no longer meant to be a post–wedding right–of–passage and introduction into intimacy—that probably happened a long time ago. Couples today are likely already living together, trudging through the challenges of life and the exhaustive tasks of preparing a wedding. Modern honeymoons are more about an intimate celebration, a stress–free time when you and your new spouse can finally exhale and forge a new life together. Today’s newlyweds are looking for more from their honeymoon, or at least something a little more unique. Just as destination weddings combine nuptials with vacation, so can a honeymoon combine a gateway of connection while also adding unexpected growth and adventure in fun and rewarding ways, like volunteering, spirituality, outdoor adventures and exploring new cultures.

Do you like the idea of bonding together while making a difference in the world? How about getting to know cultures outside the overstated touristy neighborhoods? Are you also hoping to break away on a budget following your expensive wedding? Kaya Honeymoon Volunteers, which is based out of the UK, is an example of an organization that can help you do all three. They have programs set up in 27 countries, some of which are already specifically designed for honeymooners. While their most popular options for new couples are working with lions in Zimbabwe and marine conservation on an island in Belize, their many options include conservation initiatives, safaris through wildlife research, community initiatives and more. For about $3,000, you and your new spouse can spend two weeks creating an incredible platform for your blossoming marriage as you learn about yourselves and each other. As Helwig Jones, Director of Kaya Responsible Travel points out, “It’s a honeymoon with a lot of heart!” Adventure and alms–giving await! If you’re looking for a more peaceful experience through which you can bond with your new man or lady on a different level, a great option lies in a spiritual retreat. This gives the two of you the chance to step out of the chaos of American life in order to begin this fresh phase of your lives with a sense of peace and tranquility, setting the stage for your wedded future. honeymoonvolunteers.com

They take their practice very seriously and are not open for sightseeing, but they’re happy to accommodate honeymooning pairs who are serious about practicing for a suggested room donation of $25–$50 per night. Maybe you two are looking to indulge in European culture. Staying at an enchanted Italian winery may not seem like the most unique honeymoon destination, but how about being an active participant in a cooking school while vacationing in a villa onsite? Since you’re going to be cooking with and for this person for the rest of your life, this is the perfect opportunity to shape up on those skills! Tuscookany in Tuscany is an all–inclusive experience, with organic ingredients and resources that either come straight from their own land or are trucked in from local producers and farmers. In fact, they even produce their own energy, heat and water. Tuscookany offers Italian cooking programs for week–long and three day programs (Monday to Thursday or Thursday to Monday) and a Mediterranean cooking program for the week–long program only. Whether making this the sole destination or one stop of many while exploring the country’s museums and other amazing options, this is one romantic resting stop that you’ll always remember. tuscookany.com

Piece of Cake Three Unique Bakeries for Your Wedding Cake By Emily Glaser
If there’s one day when you’re actually allowed to have your cake and eat it too, it’s definitely your wedding day. Wedding cakes have been a staple of the big day for centuries. In Ancient Rome, sweet bread was broken over the bride’s head as a symbol of luck and good tidings. In Medieval England, small cakes were stacked high and the bride and groom would attempt to kiss above the sugary tower; if they were successful, they were destined for happiness. And in America, wedding cakes are surrounded in tradition, from playful feedings between the bride and groom to saving a slice for a special anniversary. This rich history of tradition means that a lot is riding on the sugary confection that serves as the centerpiece of your wedding day. Some brides and grooms want a classic design and a delicate flavor that will preserve well in freezers and photos. Others want a fun and flavorful cake that serves as a testament to their personalities and tastes on their wedding day. Regardless of your thoughts on the providential pastry, San Diego has a bakery that’s perfect for your preferences. From traditional to unique, these three bakeries span the spectrum of wedding cakes, guaranteeing you’ll find the best bakery for you and your boo. (cont. on p.66)
San Diego abounds with wedding cake options that create a unique tablescape, like this pastel wonderland created by Sweet Cheeks Bakery Co.

MODERN
Sweet Cheeks Baking Company
When your mother was getting married, there weren’t too many considerations when it came to her cake: if it looked good and tasted good, she was happy. But today there’s a lot more to think about, like organic ingredients, sourcing locally and diet specifications for yourself and your guests. If you like your flavors fresh and healthy, vegan, sugar–free or even gluten–free, then Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. is for you. Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. incorporates locally-sourced ingredients like fresh, local butter, veg–fed and cage–free local chicken eggs, whole wheat flour, flaxseed and wheat germ, farmer’s market berries and nuts and local organic field lavender. Their devotion to sustainability is exactly the kind of business the conscious San Diegan is looking for, plus it’s entirely women–owned. Don’t worry, design and flavor are certainly never compromised, but are instead bolstered by the bakers’ promises of local sustainability. Local, pure and fresh ingredients lend their wedding cakes a delicious array of flavors, from Vegan Vanilla Bean to Sicillian Pistachio and stuffed with tasty fillings like fruity whipped creams and honey butter cream. Since they prefer to use top–quality natural ingredients, the bakers at Sweet Cheeks usually avoid fondants and dyes, but they’re also capable of working with and mastering even those tricky ingredients. If you’re a modern girl looking for a 21st century cake, Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. will satisfy your sustainable needs.
Guests can pick their favorite flavor with an array of pops from the San Diego Cake Pop Shop; Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. offers plenty of options for the sustainable, mindful marriage (above).

During 13 extraordinary days in 1978, two world leaders, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, under the watchful and sometimes exasperated eyes of U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn, hammered out an agreement that inspired the entire world. Pulitzer Prize winner Lawrence Wright (The Looming Tower, HBO’s Going Clear) brings us a riveting and moving story filled with humor, insight, and surprises as three very different men, each devoutly committed to his people and also to his faith, find that peace is possible and that hope is always the better choice.

A MATRIMONIAL MENU Your Wedding Shower Menu By Deanna Smith Brides and grooms–to–be all over the world are often overwhelmed with the traditions of matrimony and its endless list of must–dos and events. One of the most important pre–wedding events is the wedding shower. It’s an event of first impressions: your guests, your family and your new in–laws will remember this as the first taste of your wedding and marriage to come. While you’re stressing about what to wear (something flattering and and a little sexy to impress the love of your life, yet sweet and respectful under the microscopic view of your future mother–in–law), the details of food and décor may take the backseat. Décor is simple enough; just deck your space with standard flowers, napkins and fine white linen. But what on earth will you serve? Does anyone have an allergy? Who’s on the latest fad diet? What’s the hippest dish? Our solution? A little bit of everything. Lamb sliders are a delicious and fun alternative to burgers for meat lovers. For the ladies, tiny cucumber and avocado sandwiches are elegant and easy. As for drinks, switch up the regular mimosa and serve lavender bellinis or classic dirty martinis. As they say, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Let’s hope that’s the way to your in–laws’ hearts too.

On Friday, March 4th, the San Diego History Center and the Fashion Program at San Diego Mesa College presented the 5th Annual Fashion Redux! This VIP Party was the result of months of collaboration. Each year, historic garments are designed from a certain time period. This year the 1890s Gilded Age was chosen as the special era. The design students from Mesa College first viewed the historic garments at the San Diego History Center; using these as inspirational pieces, they created a sketch, constructed a muslin and then, as their last step, they sewed their finished garment. Judges picked the top four designers in the competition and models showed off these designs at the VIP Party. (cont. on p.76)

HELP THE ARTS BY HELPING AN ART SCHOOL By Megan Morse
More and more these days, the arts community is getting neglected in schools, universities and after–school programs. The fine arts are seen as extraneous, something that can be eliminated without consequence. But for many people, the fine arts represent more than just a hobby—they are a passion, a dream, a need. The arts need to be nurtured, and young artists should be taught and encouraged, not shut down. That’s what makes Steve Davidson’s burgeoning art school such a fantastic investment; Davidson aims to help artists realize their potential and advance toward a career in the arts. Stephen Davidson, Master Craftsman, has been in the creative idea business since 1986, primarily making custom signs, decorations, murals and finishes. He specializes in gorgeous gold leaf glasswork, but also works with wood, glass, marble, granite, paints, inks, acids and much more. A custom sign maker and decorator like Davidson is a true jack–of–all–trades and artisan of the world. The work of these craftsmen and artisans can be seen everywhere you go, from restaurants to theme parks. Craftsmen like Davidson can be found in the arenas of hand–painting, airbrushing, carving, screen printing, mold–making and gilding (gold leaf). As someone who has been working in the craftsman business for 30 years, Davidson has built up an impressive resume. Steve Davidson’s work has been in over 40 magazines and other publications, including A Coffee Table Book and Disney’s Newsletter (Moonlight Madness). Davidson himself has represented and promoted companies like Gerber Scientific Products, Mutoh, Iwata Airbrush, One Shot Lettering Enamel, Createx, Sign Gold Film, Sign Foam and others. Davidson has also won an array of awards in the arts and crafts industry. He has made multiple custom decorations for Disneyland and world–famous artists like Wyland and Thomas Mangelson. In fact, Davidson was called by Disney to help with the gilding (23k gold–work) on the exterior of the Small World attraction, as well as other decorations within the park.
He has also worked in many fine homes in California, and even traveled across the country to do paintings and glasswork for those wanting something unique. Davidson’s biggest adventure at the moment is his project to build the finest local art school, through which he hopes to produce our future artists, artisans and craftsmen. When people think of arts and crafts, many imagine popsicle sticks and finger painting; at Davidson’s school, the goal will be to train the top artisans and craftsmen and teach them how to run their own businesses. Davidson believes we should strike down optical pollution and bring some art back into this world! Davidson’s school aims to save many art forms from extinction, like hand lettering and gold leaf glasswork. Davidson’s school will also show students how to use top technology to produce the best work possible. Additionally, the school will help men and women in the military attend art classes without interfering with their busy schedules. The two-year program could take longer for a person in the military, but Davidson’s art school plans to be flexible and work with members serving their country to guarantee that they benefit from the experience. Perhaps you’re thinking, “Art classes are all well and good, but how will Davidson’s school help their graduates?” The plan is to assist students even after their schooling is done, through initiatives like wholesaling to students until they can purchase their own equipment. And to make sure these students don’t go out unarmed, the school will also include an advertising and marketing division. The fundraiser for the school, which will be created through Kickstarter, will be launching in May and the goal is to raise a minimum of $500,000. In order for Davidson to reach his goals, we are asking for your help. By assisting this school, you will be helping the students, the arts and Steve Davidson to achieve their shared dream of bringing success and skills to future artists. A future Monet or Mozart could be in our midst, but we’ll never know unless we give them access to the arts. For more information go to www.davidsonschoolarts.com Steve Davidson 760-583-5783

BORN WEARING TAP SHOES 42nd Street Director James Vásquez By Erica Miner
Well known in the San Diego theater community for his work at Diversionary Theatre, San Diego native and Craig Noel Award– winning director James Vásquez will join San Diego Musical Theatre’s production of Broadway’s smash– hit musical 42nd Street, opening at Spreckels Theatre on May 27th. Here the multitalented director, actor and hoofer discusses his theatrical journey. EM: You are a man of many talents: theatre, film and TV acting, choreography, screenwriting, directing and more. How did you become so accomplished in all these fields? JV: Practice, practice, practice. I’ve trained continually throughout my career—whether attending actual classes or observing or assisting directors/choreographers whose work I admire. I think I’ve also become more confident in taking risks. It’s always of the utmost importance to tell a clear story, but having a strong point of view and having a sense of fearlessness is vital. How did you take the leap from the Juilliard School of Drama, to directing theatre and performing at comedy clubs, to founding Daisy 3 Pictures and then directing two award–winning feature films? Ignorance truly is bliss! It goes back to taking risks. Everything that has come up in my career these last several years I’ve approached with the attitude of, “Well, we won’t know until we try it!” My stand–up comedy journey really started as a dare. I had no intention of ever doing stand– up, so when offered the chance I felt I had nothing to lose. It truly opened my work and me up in an exciting way. Daisy 3 Pictures came out of the desire to fill time and be creative while unemployed. My producing partners and co–founders, Mark Holmes and Carrie Preston, had a love for film. We thought, why not get a couple of cameras and see if we can figure it out? What were the inspirations for your films, 29th and Gay, Ready? Ok! and That’s What She Said?

I hadn’t written anything before 29th and Gay, which started as short sketch comedy loosely based off silly events in my real life. Carrie encouraged me to flesh it out. We were both dabbling in writing at the time and kept encouraging each other to “start with what we know.” 29th and Gay ended up being a little more autobiographical than I like to admit or ever intended it to be. Ready? OK! was actually based on a discarded flashback in 29th and Gay and found a whole, full life of its own. A friend of ours wrote a one–act play a few years ago, Girl Talk, which Carrie had directed and wanted to turn into a screenplay. That became That’s What She Said. It was a response of sorts to all the “bromance” films dominating theaters. A few years later, we found ourselves celebrating our world premiere at Sundance. You’ve restaged the ever–popular Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas at the Old Globe for several seasons now. What’s it like to direct such an iconic story? First and foremost, it’s one of the greatest honors of my life to guide a San Diego holiday tradition. It’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly. We’ve all grown up with the stories of Dr. Seuss, and I grew up watching The Grinch year after year at Christmas. To have spent the last 14 holiday seasons in Whoville... who doesn’t want to be a Who?! It’s a story about acceptance, family and tradition. To watch families come together and share this experience year after year, or for the first time, it’s a pretty great gift. What attracted you to SDMT to direct 42nd Street? Do you identify with the difficulties and heartbreaks of the story’s characters? I think I was born wearing tap shoes. My feet seem to never want to sit still. Getting to put my spin on this classic musical, with some of the best tap numbers seen on stage, was an opportunity I jumped at. I do feel
“I THINK I WAS BORN WEARING TAP SHOES. MY FEET SEEM TO NEVER WANT TO SIT STILL.”
James Vásquez, who’s directing the SDMT’s production of 42nd Street, has long been an icon in the local theater scene.
a connection with that old Hollywood idea of, “Hey kids, let’s put on a show.” I’ve always loved how, in 42nd Street, we see the behind the scenes workings and birth of a Broadway show within our show.
What are some of your favorite acting roles and directing gigs? The Grinch is forever going to hold one of the top spots. SDMT has actually given me the chance to tackle a couple of bucket list shows with CATS and West Side Story, both shows I had seen and been inspired by in my early
teens. I’ve also been working with the Old Globe/USD Graduate Acting program the last two years. We tackled Clybourne Park last spring, maybe one of my all–time favorite and most challenging experiences to date. Currently, I’m directing the first year grad students in a world premiere play by Keith Reddin titled Acquainted with the Night. I love new works! What shows haven’t you done that are on your future wish list? Well, let’s get the big embarrassing one out of the way... I love Annie. I’d love to direct a big, splashy production of it someday, somewhere. There’s a newer stage adaptation of Noel Coward’s Brief Encounter, which I’d die to get my hands on. It’s a beautiful story, full of tons of theatrical magic.

WE WON’T BE FOOLED AGAIN – OR WILL WE? By Bob Morey
It’s May of an election year. I can hear the collective groan roll across the county, beginning with our over–stuffed mailboxes filled with slate mailers from all the usual suspects, like special interest groups and political parties. Flipping through channels during commercial breaks only provides us with repetitive viewings of those same political commercials. There’s no getting away from it this month, right up until that June 7th Primary. You and me, we have a job to do, and that job is to understand who and what we are voting for when we fill out that ballot. 63% of us will vote via the absentee ballots, which will roll out over the first week of this month, selecting candidates across the board, from the nation’s highest office right down through the state, county and city levels. We’re going to vote for propositions and judges, school boards and water boards. If we get through the primaries and nominate a candidate before the conventions, then sit back and watch these parties maneuver into a brokered convention and subvert the will of the people by selecting their preferred insider candidate. If this happens, I believe we will have reached an irrevocable point in history in which all faith or trust in the public servants that are supposed to work for us, as well as the political parties we choose to align with, is lost. If this is the case, some of you are asking, then why bother subjecting ourselves to the election process? If it doesn’t make a difference, why invest in the process? Because every now and then, it does. Just recently we saw the citizens of Carlsbad demand a special election for Measure A and then defeat it. A quick summary: a developer wanted to build a shopping mall on land adjacent to the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. They acquired the land and went to work, promising the community they would have plenty of open space (a proclamation that included the parking lot), preserve surrounding wetland space and the famous strawberry fields, and that there wouldn’t be much of an increase in traffic, since the location was freeway accessible. The developer put together a citizen’s initiative to get it on the ballot (which invoked controversy in itself ) and gathered the needed signatures. At this time, the developer went before the City Council and sold them on the concept, initiating the process in a way that skirted the citizen’s vote. The decision was easy for the City Council: money for the city coffers, jobs during the construction phase as well as staffing the new businesses, all of which would result in a destination location for people to visit (and spend more money). But it wasn’t so simple. All kinds of questions began circulating, questions that couldn’t be directly answered. Questions about Environmental Impact Reports—or lack thereof— and about the developers’ relationships with some of the members on the council. Enough questions, in fact, that another citizen’s initiative was created. This lead to a special election, an election which cost the taxpayers of Carlsbad an inordinate half a million dollars. The end result? The developer’s project was denied by the voters, but even that victory was by a very slim margin. The Carlsbad drama has encouraged two new candidates to run for city council seats that went unchallenged in the last election. The community of voters came together and proved that every opinion, every vote, matters. So my friends, before you make your mark on the ballot, take some time and get to know the people and issues for which you’ll be voting. Because yes, your vote does matter.
