CHAMPAGNE & SPARKLING WINE
NOVEMBER
A Sparkling
Finish Find the perfect bubbly to celebrate the season.
T
he season of celebration is upon us, and there will be a bubbly beverage that is likely on any party planner’s shopping list—Champagne and sparkling wines. Champagne has been associated with luxury and royalty for centuries, and was traditionally served as part of festive occasions. With some very successful marketing, this tradition is still recognized today. One very common misconception is “Champagne” and “sparkling wine” are interchangeable. This is not the case. Wines created in the Champagne region in France are only allowed to use that synonymous title. However, even though sparkling wines do not possess the title of their French cousins, the primary method of creation is the same. In the traditional method, or méthode champenoise, a secondary fermentation takes place in the bottle. Other techniques include the Charmat method, carbon dioxide injection and the transfer method. All of these procedures vary in applied pressure and the length of the aging process, and ultimately influence the wine’s price. The carbonation concoction allows for some indulgent pairings. Louis Roederer Cristal is famously known for its appearance in music videos depicting sheer indulgence. The 2005 selection contains stoned fruit and citrus aromas, fresh almonds and sweet blossom meant to be savored with caviar (from $200). Another bubbly that tops wine lovers’ lists time and time again is Domaine Carneros Le Rêve de Blancs (from $100). The 2006

bottle intertwines bouquets of white flowers, pear and lemon curd with crème brûlée, spices and toasted nuts. The silky finish complements a delicious double or triple-cream cheese, fish, shellfish and poultry. For buyers looking for something local, Temecula has countless award-winning wineries with an abundance of top-notch sparkling wines. South Coast Winery carries a large selection of award-winning wines each to excite the palate. The Sparkling Blanc de Blanc ($28) won the gold at The London International Wine and Spirits Fair this year, as well as gold at the California State Fair and double gold at the San Diego County Fair. Made from 100-percent Chardonnay grapes, this glass will inspire notes of apple and floral aromas with an oak background and a touch of vanilla. South Coast’s Sparkling Pinot Noir Rose ($18) will excite any sweet palate with its strawberry, raspberry and cotton candy aromas, perfectly balanced with acidity. The Sparkling Pinot Noir Rose is the silver winner of 2013’s Inland Empire Magazine Competition as well as the Pacific Rim International. Most often during the holidays, when mailboxes are stuffed with party invites, we look for a bottle to add to the festivities. For anyone who doesn’t want to show up empty-handed but isn’t quite sure what to type of Champagne or sparkling wine to bring, it is in the best interest of the buyer to try as many wines with diverse backgrounds in order to find a personal favorite. Whatever the celebration may be, cheers! Sláinte! Prost!

THE MONDAY CLEANSE
The Monday Cleanse Get powered up for the work-week with some simple detoxifying tips.
By Ashley Baker | All photos used with permission
M
onday’s are often the most dreaded day of the week. But before you reach for another cup of coffee to resolve what ails you, consider what may have caused your sluggish feelings. According to Dr. Edward F. Group III, founder of Global Healing Center, the average American ingests over 2,100,000 toxins every 24 hours in their body. This can lead to a myriad of health problems, from an inability to focus, lack of energy, migraine, head aches, that terrible bloated feeling and of course, Monday mood swings. A quick detox may be exactly what your body needs after a long weekend out on the town, indulging in holiday
fare or traveling. To begin, start your day with a glass of lemon water. You may add organic honey if desired, and the temperature is up to you. This alone will do wonders for your digestive track, and help boost your immune system. By drinking the lemon water on an empty stomach, the body can more easily soak up all the cleansing benefits of the lemon. Then after you have eaten something, take a milk thistle supplement and a vitamin C, which helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that drives away toxins. Milk thistle has been shown to have a positive effect on the liver, which plays a primary role in removing toxins from the body. Let’s not forget about the
kidneys; organs that play a vital role by cleaning your blood every day. Uva Ursi (found at your local vitamin shop) can clean the kidneys which in turn increase blood flow and the amount of oxygen carried by the blood. This will help you stay focused during the brutal Monday commute. Next is exercise. I know that’s not what you want to hear, but it too plays a big part in cleansing your body. There is even a workout called “Qi Gong” which is designed just to cleanse the body. And before you get too intimidated, it’s actually not strenuous at all and there are free video sessions online that are relatively short and easy to learn. Finally, this next step may prove to be [continued on page 27]

he intimacy of entertaining at home should not be feared though rightfully respected. Creating an enchanting and memorable experience for guests can be daunting—from juicy bites and moody music to fashionable attire and sweet hostess gifts—meticulous details simply come with the territory. Lisa Vanderpump from “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” and Alexis Bellino, from “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” make hosting a party look extremely fashionable. FINE magazine interviewed the reality television stars to get their tips and advice on home entertaining.

entertaining VIP perks and bottle services. It starts at the very beginning, where guests check in with posh-clad bouncers, getting fast-track entry into these venues. One truly feels like a VIP when escorted by a host to their exclusive table where cocktail servers are waiting, ready to take care of your every need. While each one of these clubs provides their VIPs with the royal treatment, each dance hall has also found ways
to make themselves unique. The twostory, Victorian-style hot-spot Voyeur, for instance, is complete with sexy go-go dancers tearing it up inside a trendsetting LED wall that covers one side of the venue and pumps out a limitless array of images, graphics and videos (light show anyone?). It is has become a well-known haven for electronic dance music (EDM) lovers who come to sweat in a more intimate venue— so intimate, in fact, that two of the VIP tables are only five feet away from the DJ. But what makes Voyeur one of the best spots in SD? “The VIP team that we assembled is really outgoing, down-toearth, fun, party people. We enhance the experience, not just through the
entertainment but how we interact with everyone, as we become part of the party ourselves,” said Matt Ridley, the club’s head of VIP services. “We like to cater to our VIP clients. If it’s legal, we will make it happen. If someone wants to spray Champagne on the crowd, we will make it happen, there’s just a price for it.” And if a client wants a VIP table for 50 people right in the middle of the dance floor, Voyeur makes it happen—building a VIP table on the dance floor in exchange for a minimum of 20 bottles of Dom Perignon Luminous ($650 each). Going above and beyond to provide their VIP clients with custom experiences, it’s no surprise this EDM club draws in a huge [continued on page 46]

in Champagne had the option of putting someone on a hoisted chariot ride, followed by a sparkling FLUXX cocktail server team to climb inside a 12-foot gumball machine where they would be served Champagne. Most recently, FLUXX’s Champagne Show Carrier is The Rocket2400—an in-house designed, custom-fabricated, LEDlit Champagne rocket that carries servers to your VIP table with Champagne. “We often hear, ‘Can I ride that champagne carrier like the cocktail server did?’ or ‘How much do I have to purchase to climb on or get in that?’” said VIP Host Jason Mitchell. “The venue can certainly become the client’s playground, and we will cater to their requests to the best of our ability, but we do consider their safety first. With this all said, we do let the clients get pretty crazy.” Featuring water walls and floating staircases, downtown’s veteran VIP spot, Stingaree, has also earned a reputation for superior service. And whether you book a table on the main dance floor or a cabana on the rooftop oasis, you are guaranteed to have an unforgettable night. “Being one of the biggest nightlife venues in San Diego we have

the ability to cater to our guests and make sure that they get the best night for any occasion,” said Michael McShane, marketing and entertaining director. “One night you can come in, have the full blown club experience with a VIP table on the main dance floor, dancing the entire night, then come back the very next night for a VIP cabana on the rooftop to hang out, listen to some music, and have a few drinks with your buddies.” Stingaree has also seen its fair share of VIP requests. “We get a wide variety of requests from DJ shout outs to cigar rollers to adult entertainers,” McShane said. “Most people don’t get too crazy but we are often asked to plan their entire night starting with hotel rooms, limo service, dinner, bottle service, and the afterparty in the hotel room. We’ve had a few guests come in during the week to let loose and spend between $20 and $30,000. Champagne wars normally get the party started.” There’s no better way to experience one of these top-notch clubs than with extraordinary VIP treatment. Indulge yourself—after all, you deserve it.

little less conversation—a little more lights, camera, action! Boudoir photography has become more popular by demand from women that are looking to get their couture-pose face on and slip into something a little more revealing, to celebrate special occasions such as engagements, weddings, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day and weight-loss—and the list goes on. And you don’t have to be Parisian to get into character either. Typically this genre of photography captures candid moments of women in beautiful lingerie—but for the Boudoir Divas in San Diego, sexy lace is just a small part of what they believe to be an empowering expression of femininity. imagination have fun and hunt through the house for creative objects and materials. If the latest color trends are important to you and your decorating, then I always like to defer to the most recent Pantone selections from each season. For more than 20 years, Pantone, the global authority on color, has surveyed the designers of New York Fashion Week and beyond to bring seasonal decorators the most important color trends. This year, the most prominent hues for fall 2013 are jewel-toned emerald—which continues to sparkle and fascinate, bringing luxury and elegance to the palette—while a more yellow-toned Linden Green brings a lightness and brightness to the deeper shades of fall. They both look beautiful paired with Mykonos Blue, a bold, meditative blue, for a classic and relaxed fall look. Exotic Acai (like the berry) adds a mysterious richness to the palette, and pairing this elegant shade of purple with emerald will give a regal disposition. The newest red is a spirited Samba red and it is great for creating an expressive and dramatic look. Whether your table is filled with glitter and glam or burlap and beach shells remember that the real reason for the table and holiday entertaining is to be with family to celebrate this wonderful and beautiful life.

Sticking to the Basics Best-selling book gains fresh perspective with a new edition by local San Diegan. Article by Whitney Butler
W
idely known for his 1937 book “Think and Grow Rich,” Napoleon Hill was one of the first authors to produce personal success literature. Hill’s legacy left an imprint on posterity—his book one of the best selling of all time. Hill’s foundational principles illustrate achievement as a process and formula that is accessible to all. Hill’s work was largely influenced by his earlier book, “The Law of Success” and 20 years of research spent networking with a large number of wealthy and successful entrepreneurs of the time. But times have changed, and Hill’s success manifesto has been updated by contemporary individuals who share both Hill’s belief in pedagogy, as well as his passion for personal development. Hand selected by The Napoleon Hill Foundation, Greg S. Reid, a San Diego native, is the newest interpreter of “Think and Grow Rich,” introducing “Stickability: The Power of Perseverance.” The teachings are the same throughout the book, refreshed by contemporary interviews. Reid’s appointment to carry on Hill’s teachings within the framework of the classic text lead him on his own journey to interview CEOs, successful entrepreneurs and creative thinkers that would resonate with a generation perhaps too far removed from the original context written during the Great Depression. To illustrate the principles with a contemporary spin, Reid interviewed the wealthy and successful of a newer generation. Among them, Steve Woznank,

Miracle Babies providing assistance and support to families in need By Heather Randall | All photos used with permission
C
harity begins at home. This statement is especially true for Dr. Sean Daneshmand and his family. On Dec. 31, 2002, his wife Marjan gave birth to their daughter Natalie at just 34 weeks of gestation. Daneshmand has been practicing neonatal-perinatal medicine and pediatrics for more than a decade, and over this time has witnessed the physical and emotional turmoil women and families faced with high-risk pregnancy. And at 30 weeks into his wife’s pregnancy, the all-too-familiar occurrences he had with his patients hit close to home. Mrs. Daneshmand learned she had a complication called placental abruption, a condition where placenta separates from the uterine wall. After weeks of hospital stays and the state of both mother’s and daughter’s health up in the air, everyone was able to catch a break. Natalie’s birth was a resounding success. Following the birth of their daughter, the Daneshmands founded
through education, prevention and medical care. The opportunity to assist these families with the help they need resulted in Sean Daneshmand being named a “CNN Hero”. Miracle Babies has drawn national recognition as well. In January of this year Dean McDermott—most notable for co-starring with his wife Tori Spelling in their reality show “Tori & Dean: Inn Love”—competed against seven other celebrities on Food Network’s “Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off.” McDermott chose to compete for Miracle Babies because the couple gave birth to a miracle baby of their own. They faced difficulties with Tori’s pregnancy of their fourth child, Finn, who was born three weeks

early. The experience made McDermott want to compete not only for his son, but for babies and their families involved in the same situation. Dean went on to win the competition, earning $50,000 for the charity. This month, Leonard Simpson’s 6th Annual 10 Best Dressed Awards, a gala that celebrates philanthropists who dress every day with “the gloves of compassion and a coat of courage,” will benefit Miracle Babies. Leonard Simpson is a red carpet guru and founder of the world-renowned fashion production company Fashion Forward. Held on Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines, the gala will highlight the award ceremony, as well as a formal seated dinner, dancing and a live auction. The work Miracle Babies does greatly benefits the families the charity encounters. It aims to become the nation’s premier non-profit resource for NICU patients and their families. The organization is maintained by volunteers, many of which are parents of prematurely born children. Miracle Babies urges others to get involved as well, either through volunteering or making a donation. To learn more, visit miraclebabies.org.

Christmas Tree Lane serves up holiday festivities for a worthy cause. By Heather Randall
F
or more than three decades, hardworking women in communities throughout San Diego put together a fun holiday event to celebrate the Christmas season and raise money for The Boys and Girls Club. This year, the tradition continues as organizers plan the 32nd Christmas Tree Lane event at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. Champagne, cocktails and decadent hors d’oeuvres will be prepared with care, and plenty of activities will make for a joyous affair. A boutique show, fashion show and live auction will be available, and community members and professional decorators provide an extra touch of holiday cheer with hand-decorated Christmas trees to be raffled off. Each raffle winner will receive a uniquely decorated tree, as well as a special gift that accompanies it. Local firemen and military have volunteered their smiles and charm this year to assist with selling raffle tickets. Laura Cain of “Jeff and Jer” and
KFMB-TV news anchor, Carlo Cecchetto will emcee for the afternoon, as well as serve as auctioneers for the live auction. This year, event committee organizer, Sarah Frazier is serving as the committee chair and organizer. Frazier participated in several of the past Christmas Tree Lane events, assisting in everything from decorating one of the Christmas trees for the raffle, to planning each year’s original theme. “Christmas Tree Lane is one of the staples that has been carrying the Boys and Girls Club over the years,” Frazier said. The beautiful trees will be on display all afternoon, and guests will be able to shop at the boutique show from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the boutique show are donated to The Boys and Girls Club to help fund transportation from schools to local Boys and Girls Club locations. “It’s really become a tradition for a lot of families,” she said. The California Center for the Arts is located at 340 N. Escondido Blvd.

OCEANSIDE HARBOR PARADE OF LIGHTS When: Dec. 10 Where: Oceanside harbor Admission: Free
DECEMBER 3-8, 2013
Fishing boats, sail boats, yachts and kayaks dress up in holiday swag and circle the Oceanside Harbor to enchant onlookers at the harbor, restaurants and beach. One of the best viewing spots is along the side of the Oceanside Harbor near the fishing dock and police station. From this vantage point, you can see the parade twice. The concrete walkway that surrounds much of the harbor is also good for enjoying the event. Harbor Village at North Harbor includes shops, dining, and seating areas. visitoceanside.org/event
