Cornerback Brandon Flowers returns to the Chargers for another year.

The Speedster & the Vegan Meet Travis Benjamin and Brandon Flowers of the San Diego Chargers

By Amanda Langston-Barnett | Photos Courtesy of the San Diego Chargers With training camp looming and football season around the corner, Chargers fans are gearing up for another year with the Bolts staying put in America’s Finest City. This year, the Chargers added a burgeoning phenom wide receiver to its offense, Travis Benjamin, and welcomed back solid veteran cornerback in Brandon Flowers to pillar its young defense. Both players proudly hail from the Miami area and landed in San Diego by way of the midwest; Benjamin spent four years in Cleveland, while Flowers spent his first six seasons with the Chiefs. I got a chance to catch up with Travis Benjamin and Brandon Flowers to find out about the transition to San Diego from their former teams, how they gear up for training camp, and how the Golden State measures up to the Sunshine State. When I asked Chargers’ star wide receiver Stevie Johnson about newcomer Travis Benjamin, all I got in response was, “Trav is fast.” But in regards to a prodigious speedster, what else needs to be said? Benjamin played four years in Cleveland with an ever

shaky rotation of quarterbacks—not the ideal situation for a wide receiver. He flew under the radar until some off-the-field troubles sidelined Browns starting wide receiver Josh Gordon. Benjamin took the opportunity and literally ran with it. His successful breakout season was rewarded by the Chargers when he signed a four-year, $24 million contract this offseason. With his move to San Diego, Benjamin links up with 5-time pro-bowl quarterback Philip Rivers, who has been the Chargers’ keystone for well over a decade. Since landing in San Diego, it’s been all sparks and lightening between the ingenious QB and his rocket-fast new target. Benjamin says that he was looking for a team with a Hall of Fame caliber quarterback, and that’s what motivated his move to San Diego. Upon hearing that Rivers recently told a San Diego radio show that Benjamin was faster than anybody he had ever thrown a football to, the wide receiver searched for words before saying, “[For] as long as he’s been playing, 12-plus years, and all those seasons he’s had… and right off the (cont. on p.32)

the bat? That kind of put butterflies in my stomach.” Butterflies can describe what a lot of Chargers fans have felt since the announcement that the Rams are moving to L.A. and the Bolts are staying put. Over the last year, talks between the city of San Diego, the Chargers organization and the fans about the future of local football were at a fever pitch. The threat of a new stadium in L.A. loomed, and an air of uncertainty surrounded the organization, but this never fazed Benjamin. “The question had been thrown around a little before I came, but… talking to a couple of the guys, they told me that San Diego is the place to be and the place they want to play… It was a lock for me,” says Benjamin. While he hasn’t been a Charger for long, Benjamin has quickly learned the ropes of his new city. Like a true San Diegan, he says he’s “become a fish taco guy now” and has grown accustomed to waiting out the long breakfast lines at Snooze in Del Mar. At the break of mini-camp, Benjamin headed to his hometown of Miami to spend time with his family before returning to San Diego for training camp, which coincidentally is what teammate cornerback Brandon Flowers plans to do in nearby Delray Beach, Florida. Training camp seems to come all too soon for every NFL player with the rare exception of Brandon Flowers. Entering his ninth season in the NFL, Flowers has a unique perspective not shared with a large chunk of the locker room: memories of training camp before the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which set the current health and safety standards for the players. Most players dread the long days of practice, limited sleep and the intense position battles that ensue when training camp rolls around, but for Flowers, checking in for training camp in July is old hat. “When I first came into the NFL, practice was a lot harder,” Flowers says. “Practice two times a day in full pads, tackling to the whistle... But with this new CBA, they got soft on us… All training camps are the same. You’re going to have your body aches, you’re not going to have a lot of sleep. It’s about preparing yourself mentally, more than anything.” Flowers oozes the kind of confidence you only earn with seniority. “I approach it with the right mindset. I have a good group of guys [I’ll] be going through this with,” Flowers laughs.

32

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

“I’m like the oldest guy in there. You know, those young guys keep me laughing. We have a good relationship, have a good time, so I don’t dread it at all. I actually look forward to coming back and being in the room with these guys. We have fun; literally every day, we have fun.” Proof that Flowers has learned a few tricks of the trade along the way, he plans to bring his hyperbaric chamber and iPad queue of movies to camp this year to help him recover from the intense schedule––confirmation that it’s not all fun and games, even for the tenured vets. One thing that comes along with playing nine years in the NFL is injury. Flowers suffered a season-ending knee injury during the final weeks of the 2015 season, which marked the end of his second season as a Charger. Flowers spent much of his offseason in his hometown of Delray Beach with a laser focus on being prepared for the upcoming season, and his preparation was all-pro. Flowers worked with Miami-based celebrity trainer David Alexander, clocked time in a hyperbaric chamber and followed a vegan diet. Flowers’s holistic approach to conditioning makes San Diego an ideal landing spot with its health and wellness vibe, but Flowers has yet to uncover a vegan restaurant that compares to the ones he loves in his hometown of Delray. “I know this is my third year here, but I’m still feeling the city out because when I’m here, it’s more work,” he laughs. “I don’t have a lot of downtime. When I do have time I go searching, but I haven’t found a [vegan] place yet.” When Flowers does have time off, he likes to explore the city with his one-year-old daughter. “She really enjoys Sea World… We took her to the zoo. She loves seeing the animals; she’s very outdoorsy,” Flowers says. As a new dad, he appreciates just how kid-friendly San Diego is. “We take her to La Jolla to seal [cove]. We took her on a little boat ride in the harbor and saw seals there, so as long as animals are around, she’s pretty much a happy camper. As long as she’s happy, we’re happy.” Whether they’re exploring the San Diego sights, commanding on the football field or prepping for the upcoming season, Travis Benjamin and Brandon Flowers both have one thing in common: determination. With strong work ethics, natural talent and a desire to dominate this season, Benjamin and Flowers may just usher in a winning season for the Chargers.

ScaleStop Plus TurboTAC Purifies Water and Improves Health By Jess Yacovelle Every year, thousands of children flock to the San Diego County Fair with weary parents in tow. The kids drag their parents through the throngs of people, bouncing from deepfried hot dogs to carnival games galore, including one popular contest where children throw ping pong balls into little glass cups of water. Their prize? A petite orange goldfish swimming in a bowl just big enough to fit in two tiny palms. With bright, youthful eyes, children take their winnings home—still splashing around in the bowl perched on their knees— excitement shaking their tiny hearts with laughter. It’s a pet all their own, something kids can name and take care of (mostly) by themselves… yet three days later, they’ll often find the unfortunate fish floating belly-up in its little glass bowl, soaked in the saltwater tears of an inconsolable child. Parents usually brush off the untimely deaths, claiming goldfish have shorter lifespans to make the child’s tears stop, but that’s not true. In reality, the common goldfish can live for around thirty years—but only if it has proper water conditions. The frightening truth is that unfiltered tap water is often bogged down with harmful chemicals like mercury, copper or lead in staggering amounts—enough to poison a goldfish. And while adults, children and even dogs are certainly bigger and harder to kill than a goldfish, tainted water can still have adverse effects on consumers as the poor people of Flint, Michigan recently learned. While it’s impossible to control the quality of water that sweeps through our pipes, it’s very easy to manage what flows from our faucets with the right type of water filtration system. When it comes to high-quality, eco-friendly and American-made water filters, Next Filtration is the foremost provider throughout the country. ScaleStop Plus TurboTAC by Next Filtration is a consumerfriendly filtration system designed to prevent hard water and promote healthy living. Brianna Scott, the National Factory Representative for Next Filtration and Regional Director of Sales and Marketing for Bluewater Manufacturing Inc. (as well as a San Diego resident and accidental killer of San Diego County Fair goldfish), believes wholeheartedly in the health benefits of ScaleStop Plus TurboTAC. Explains Scott, “Heavy metals in drinking water are a significant health threat, [but] ScaleStop Plus can remove over 99% of all soluble lead, mercury, copper and other dissolved metals from water.” ScaleStop Plus TurboTAC is no joke; the filtration system has been tested and certified by The Water Quality Association and includes advanced patented technology that not only removes harmful chemicals but retains advantageous minerals.

LEFT: Brianna Scott, the National Factory Representative for Next Filtration and Regional Director of Sales and Marketing for Bluewater Manufacturing Inc. RIGHT: Filter your water, save a goldfish!

“Most other systems in Southern California can take away the taste or odor of chlorine and chloramines as well as sediment, but that doesn’t help improve the health of the water. With our system, beneficial minerals like magnesium and calcium are kept in the water while copper, lead and mercury are removed.” Adds Scott with a laugh, “It’s like having high-end mineral water flowing through your shower head.” When it comes to cooking or washing your vegetables, high-end mineral water is exactly what you want, especially if—like the majority of San Diegans—you prefer eating farm-to-table and organic food. “I, like most women, buy all organic produce,” Scott acknowledges. “No pesticides, no chemicals… but if I wash my fruits and vegetables in unfiltered water, I’m exposing my clean, chemical-free food to the harmful chemicals in my pipes like mercury and lead. It’s such a waste, because my expensive, organic food isn’t really organic anymore, is it?” Just like the poor San Diego County Fair goldfish, organic produce can easily become steeped in harmful substances that shouldn’t go anywhere near our bodies, let alone in the food we eat or the water we drink. Water should be pure and clean, without any dangerous additives, which is why Next Filtration takes great pride in providing a product that is eco-friendly and truly green—it produces no wastes or byproducts, only fresh, crisp water. Because, at the end of the day, promoting healthy living is what Next Filtration is all about. “We’re advocates of raising awareness about what’s in our water and how we can help others,” Scott says. “Educating people to our current systems is what matters.” Awareness and education about your water system can keep your food organic, your family healthy and your goldfish swimming happily for the next thirty years. Next Filtration works hard to improve human health and save the lives of goldfish, one fishbowl at a time.

Hot Rods or Bust

The Boss 429 Mustang is one of many classic cars featured at Cruisin’ Grand of Escondido.

Cruisin’ Grand Squeals into Escondido By Thea Carney

Rev your engines and slam on the accelerator; let your inner gearhead fly at Cruisin’ Grand of Escondido, the annual summer car extravaganza that takes place every Friday for twenty-seven straight weeks. From ’67 convertibles to souped up ‘Stangs, Cruisin’ Grand offers a myriad of custom and classic cars from throughout history gathered along the striking main street of downtown Escondido. Cruisin’ Grand boasts a touching backstory briefer than the lives of the cars showcased, but no less sentimental. The event began in April 2000, created by local car enthusiast Steve Waldron. In love with the hot rod atmosphere and overcome by an itch for old-fashioned cars, Waldron spent his youth driving down Grand Avenue and imagining the street lined with classic cars from all eras. His obsession started when he was young, says Waldron, “I was always taken to the races when I was a kid. My dad was really into that culture, so it was always in my blood. I thought downtown Escondido had a perfect ambiance for a cruise night.” Thus began Waldron’s quest to implement a weekly familyfriendly night filled with ostentatious automobiles. Though hesitant about creating a large-scale event at first, Waldron quickly dove in. Working with the now defunct Downtown Business Association, Waldron arranged for Friday nights throughout the summer to fill Grand Avenue with classic

cars. With the help of friends, Waldron picked up permits, hurried to spread the word, crossed his fingers and waited. “It was up to me to call everyone I knew with a hot rod for the first night,” he explains. “[Those were] humble beginnings.” Yet those humble beginnings became immediate success; that first night saw over 50 classic cars lining Grand Avenue, and Cruisin’ Grand has continued to grow ever since. It took years of work for Cruisin’ Grand to become the San Diego staple it is today—over 200,000 people attend each year—and Waldron insists it was all worthwhile. For him, Cruisin’ Grand is a unifying force for both the city of Escondido and for people enamored with automobiles. “For people who weren’t raised around the hot rod culture, I hope they can see that this is part of their American heritage. These cars were manufactured pre-world war, some post-war… I hope people can see these classic cars and [understand] the love hot rodders have for them.” More than just a classic car show, Cruisin’ Grand offers live music, prize-laden contests and theme nights during the twentyseven week spectacular. Take a picturesque stroll through the decades alongside Escondido’s Grand Avenue, the smell of fresh petrol and slick car wax thick in the air. Cruisin’ Grand runs until September 30th, ending with the famous Nitro Night, which features nitro-burning rear engine dragster cars.

NEW & IMPROVED Preserving the Old Neighborhood While Keeping Up with the New By Rosalie Cushman You can almost hear Mr. Rogers’s melody playing in the distance. Quaint, oldfashioned neighborhoods are transforming into bustling modern centers of culture and creativity. While no one can turn back time, the best qualities of a bygone era can be preserved, reinvented and reinvigorated. Three such neighborhood communities have done just that. With a presence demanding to be explored, these revitalized communities offer a new and improved outlook on San Diego living. LITTLE ITALY The term “Renaissance-driven” is apropos for San Diego’s Little Italy. “We saw in the mid 1990s our community was in decline after the tuna industry shut down,” says

Marco Li Mandri, Chief Administrator of New City America, Inc., Little Italy Association’s managing partner. Their combined goals became the redevelopment and management of business improvement districts, community and public spaces, as well as neighborhood revitalization. To make this happen, “we drew on our culture’s rich traditions of family, of community gathering, of city-states,” says Li Mandri. This tradition has historically been expressed in the piazza, or public square, and the church. With 43 organizations alone operating through Our Lady of the Rosary, an iconic landmark in its own right, additional neighborhood and civic groups and developers coalesced to revitalize the community into what residents and visitors

enjoy today. “We wanted to create some great public spaces,” says Li Mandri, adding, “We needed to establish an environment for businesses too.” Part of this effort required creating housing developments that were family, youth and seniorfriendly. It also included establishing an easy-access, pedestrian-friendly community that serves those locally, as well as the greater San Diego area. There are rich examples of how Little Italy’s Association and partnerships have accomplished this from its original genesis. The Mercato Farmers Market not only serves the local community, but it draws in visitors from across the county. Further, over 3,000 apartments and condominiums have been constructed in the last several years, with 1,000 units under construction currently. With relentless enthusiasm, Li Mandri tells of a 10,000 square foot piazza, one block from Our Lady of the Rosary, that will open next spring. Little Italy’s robust revitalization efforts have also included smaller piazzas, distinctive boutique shopping districts, scrumptious restaurants and events such as Artwalk, Festa and Carnavale. Also included is streetscape beautification and the planting of 1,300 trees. Once on the brink of disaster, Little Italy has transformed into a thriving and reinvigorated place, Italian style!

NORTH PARK Once considered San Diego’s foremost suburban community, North Park enjoys untold charm with its historically renovated Craftsman home and California bungalow architectural mix. Many previously in need of repairs were refurbished in the last decade, displaying timeless grace as if they were just built. Setting off North Park’s neighborhoods are lush trees that display wide streets and quaint culs-de-sac that promote an authentic neighborhood feel. It’s the sense of community that has taken this once indecline section of San Diego to new heights. “People wanted to live, work, shop and socialize in our community,” says Angela Landsberg, Executive Director of North Park Mainstreet Association, a driving force behind the area’s revitalization efforts. “We have a tightknit business community that collaborates, not just competes.” What’s more, since it’s situated next to San (cont. on p.40)

Hip and young, North Park has become a thriving neighborhood.

(cont. from p.39)

Diego’s massive and lush Balboa Park, North Park has a unique green space topography. “You can dine at a great restaurant here and walk 200 feet for a canyon hike when you leave the restaurant,” quips Landsberg. With a unique fusion of classic and hipster sensibilities, the community demonstrates an easy convergence of conventional and classic. Having grown up in North Park herself, Landsberg appreciates both the traditional and modern, as do the rest of the business and residential entities. The co-working development, for example, demonstrates a collaborative effort whereby diverse entrepreneurs come together to share space for their mutual benefit. In addition, with the city’s Business Improvement District efforts and Main

EAST VILLAGE Pulsating with diversity, East Village uses urban planning design to capture the energy of this downtown neighborhood. Through the completion of Padres’ Petco Park and San Diego’s Central Library, both the Downtown San Diego Partnership and the East Village Association promote diversification and a “livable urban concept” befitting its heritage. With several public and private educational facilities, the community also showcases advanced learning institutions in the NewSchool of Architecture and Design, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, San Diego City College, and Thomas Jefferson Law School. Downtown San Diego Partnership’s East Village hopes to inspire their community to be creative.

Street’s historic preservation efforts, the focus has expanded to include art and entertainment activities such as music and art festivals, farmers markets and more. “We’ve only hit the tip of the iceberg into what we will become as a community,” Landsberg concludes.

Senior Vice President Danny Reeves describes three phases of development fueled by public and private investment. With Petco Park and the Library completed, the middle phase focuses on the development of an urban green space which will be second only to Balboa Park in size. With several housing and mixed-use facilities already completed—such as DiamondView Tower, Legacy Apartments, The Mark Condos and others—East Village furthers its ambitious goals to infuse and coordinate high-quality life. This coordinated approach even includes dog parks. “We want a dog-friendly, pedestrian-friendly community spirit,” says Reeves. “We want [East Village] to also be for young families and kids.” Included in this concept are Safety Ambassadors and homeless support efforts that provide resources to the community. Makers Quarter, a new project on the edge of East Village that will combine creative work spaces and housing with curated restaurants and shopping, represents the final phase of East Village’s development. “People can get together to work collaboratively,” says Reeves with obvious excitement in his voice. “There is continued demand for more housing, specifically rentals.” 900 new units are in the works. Further goals include energizing the idea district and expanding even more innovation. Case in point: the NewSchool of Architecture and Design student thesis proposed a “social experiment” whereby vacant blocks or lots become gathering places or pop-up fashion boutiques, using space or shipping containers from which to operate. The QuartYard, a creative fusion of the above, promises and delivers that storied proposal. It seems there’s no end to an inspired and innovative East Village!

By Land & By Sea

San Diego is Home to the U.S. Military By Amanda Langston-Barnett On any given day in San Diego, you’re likely to hear the buzz of fighter jets flying overhead at least once. Not the easy-going, laid-back fantasy of those Visit California commercials; no, this is San Diego in full color. Sea Hawk for the Navy––Sea Stallion for Marines—helicopter blades strike through the air in full THS. As the Miramar-inspired film Top Gun celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, San Diego finds itself still in the forefront of military culture in the good ol’ U.S.A. With its long history of military influence, San Diego veritably wouldn’t exist without its armed forces. As the founding Fleet Week city, San Diego is a quietly humble military town. Not often known to the throngs of newcomers who stream into San Diego to enjoy the weather, tides and friendly vibe, San Diego was once home to Fightertown. Immortalized in the 1986 film, San Diego was a culture rich in military presence, and the world found itself enraptured by the high-flying, death-defying romantics of Top Gun. Based at the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School—commonly known as TOPGUN—which was based at the former Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, it can decidedly be said that it was the U.S. military that threw San Diego a lifeline in the days where it was Boomtown or Bust. For the past 219 years, the natural deep-water harbor of San Diego has drawn defense vessels to its shores. The perhaps politically incorrect—yet no doubt formative—founding fathers of San Diego, Alonzo Horton and William Davis, foresaw the military as the city’s greatest ally roughly 150 years ago. With no gold and no clean drinking water, just deep ocean waters and beautiful landscapes to offer settlers, Davis and Horton sought out the Army to set up military forts during the Mexican-American War and Civil War respectively; the rest is proverbial history. Much of San Diego County is named after commanding officers of the U.S. Armed Forces, such as Kearny and Rosecrans. Balboa Park served as a naval base near its origin to appease President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who supported San Diego as the prime Naval city at the start of World War II. Even Ballast Point, now synonymous with pop culture micro-brews, hails from

42

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

San Diego’s original military outpost in Point Loma. Point Loma’s Liberty Station is an artist’s paradise: wine and watercolor classes, several ballet schools and one of the nation’s largest megachurches, The Rock, all shelter together in quaint brick buildings overlooking the bay. One hardly notices the signage that fronts the narrow buildings reading “Barracks.” Liberty Station is quintessential free-spirited San Diego, but it was once the Naval Training Center San Diego, the Navy’s premiere recruit training command, or boot camp, for the better part of the 20th century. Like the Missions that dot the San Diego landscape, military outposts quietly pepper the backdrop of San Diego’s history. Today, all branches of the U.S. military call San Diego home, making it the largest military city in the nation. While it was the Army that William Davis recruited to set up stations

along the shores of Old Town, it is the Navy and the Marine Corps that have grown San Diego into the powerhouse city it has become. Between Camp Pendleton and Marine Corp Air Station Miramar, more than 51,000 Marines and recruits are based in San Diego—that equates to 1/4th of the worldwide force. San Diego County is also home to about 50,000 Navy personnel, or about one in seven of the entire Navy. Currently, the Navy has 49 ships harbored in San Diego, a fleet that injected $2.6 billion in direct spending to the city’s economy. Twenty-two percent of San Diego’s workforce is employed by the military, including both military personnel and civilian employees. With San Diego’s Navy presence nearly doubling in the next 8 years—with the number of military vessels in our harbor rising to 84—our San Diego military employees are certain to grow.

Aside from the Defense Department revenue, the Armed Forces draw in considerable tourism dollars. The USS Midway is one of only a handful of historic warship museums in the U.S., and it’s arguably the best. San Diego’s annual Fleet Week also draws crowds for the month-long celebration to honor current and former service members and their families. Coronado Island is a popular tourist destination, but the village is also flanked by two Navy bases, one amphibious and one airfield, for those who want to catch a glimpse of ships sailing off to sea or a fighter jet in flight. Coronado is one of two Navy bases in the country that trains the elite Navy SEALs. With Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Naval Base Point Loma and even Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton up north, there’s no shortage of military personnel in town. Make no mistake, San Diego is a quietly humble military city.

The 25th Annual

Peace Officer of the Year

Awards By Anne Bosanac

In a profession where good work often goes unnoticed, it’s important that we take time to recognize the exceptional work that law enforcement officers do on a daily basis. The 25th Annual SDPOA Peace Officer of the Year Awards were held at the Hard Rock Hotel and recognized the most outstanding representatives from 17 local law enforcement agencies. This year, the Theodore Roosevelt Police Award was presented to Officer Jeffrey Swett. This prestigious award is given to officers who return to active duty after recovering from a severe injury. While working patrol on January 13, 2015, Officers Jeffrey Swett and Brett Byler arrived at a home in Barrio Logan where residents reported a man was outside attempting to break in and threatening to kill them. When the officers arrived at the scene, the suspect leapt into Officer Swett’s patrol SUV and drove it at both officers. Officer Swett was knocked onto the hood of the vehicle as the suspect accelerated; eventually, Officer Swett was thrown into a corrugated metal fence. Officer Swett was immediately rushed to the hospital; he had sustained a broken left femur, a broken left fibula, three broken bones in both wrists, a broken neck, two fractures to his spine, several broken ribs, a tear in his aorta and a deep laceration from his forehead to the crown of his head requiring multiple staples. After spending two weeks in the hospital and a week in a rehabilitation center, Officer Swett returned home in a wheelchair. He underwent a total of six surgeries on his neck, leg and both wrists throughout this grueling recovery period–– doctors told him these injuries were career ending. But filled with determination and courage, Officer Swett

was eager to prove them wrong. He returned to work, full duty, in mid-November 2015, just ten months after sustaining a multitude of debilitating injuries. And this is not the first time Officer Swett has beaten the odds and overcome severe injuries. In January 2013, Officer Swett broke his left tibia and fibula into 53 pieces by jumping over a fence to investigate a domestic violence incident. He required three surgeries and now has two plates from his knee to his ankle to support his leg; after six months of recuperation, Officer Swett returned to full duty. In October 2013, Officer Swett was struggling with a combative suspect when he sustained a right broken tibia. After six months of recuperation, Officer Swett again returned to full duty. Officer Swett’s miraculous perseverance is a testament to his extraordinary character, determination and commitment to the community he serves. Also at the event, The San Diego Police Officers Association took a moment to recognize the following sponsors for their dedication to helping law enforcement: The Law Offices of Bobbitt, Pinckard and Fields, California Casualty, Jenny Craig, California Coast Credit Union, Law Office of David B. Dugan, San Diego Metropolitan Credit Union, The Law Offices of O’Mara & Padilla and The San Diego Chargers. Congratulations to all of the recipients, and thank you for your dedication and service to the community.

Gems Going Global Make Memories and More with Made in Earth By Bianca Kasawdish “There’s truly something special about wearing a piece of jewelry that resonates with you and tells a story.” Thus believes Bunny Bedi, founder of international jewelry brand Made in Earth. It’s a belief that has inspired his jewelry designs and the growth of his business. Made in Earth trades in crafting memorable pieces of jewelry. While jewelry trends are always evolving, one-of-akind pieces are here to stay thanks to this artistic designer. Each piece crafted by Made in Earth is unique and includes some of nature’s most stunning gemstones and metals. Made in Earth began as a vendor booth at boutique flea markets and festivals in Australia. After his first visit to Venice, California, founder Bunny Bedi instantly knew he wanted his flagship jewelry gallery stateside—that was when his dream came to life. Fascinated by the beauty of nature, Bedi meticulously creates gorgeous jewelry that highlights his love of natural gemstones. As glittering stones are all the rage in jewelry, Bedi’s newest collection is a nod to nature at its finest. The Melody Collection is named after Melody Guilbault, the best-selling author of the Love is in the Earth series and one of Bedi’s personal friends of over 15 years. These exclusive jewels are set with crystals from Melody’s personal collection that she curated during her international travels. Stunning and unique, the Melody Collection offers a number of eye-catching pendants, rings and

bracelets. “Conversation pieces are worn to be noticed,” shares Bedi. “Simple and timeless fashion will allow your unique pieces to be the center of your ensemble.” And Bedi has a number of tips for showcasing statement pieces of jewelry, including the old adage “less is more.” According to Bedi, “If you’re wearing a chunky ring, that’s all that should be displayed on your hand. You can balance it out with a more delicate pendant and some faceted stud earrings.” Whether creating for an exclusive collection or for his local Del Mar stores, Bedi uses a wide variety of stones. One of Bedi’s favorite gems to work with? Malachite, which is the stone of transformation. In addition, Bedi creates a myriad of pieces using different shades of Quartz. No matter what kind of gemstone he uses, one thing is constant in every Made in Earth piece: Bedi believes the natural beauty of each stone should speak for itself, which is why his designs are clean and simple. Though Made in Earth originated from humble beginnings in Australian flea markets, nowadays it has galleries in Del Mar, New York, Los Angeles and Melbourne, back where the global brand began. Yet despite the international success of the company, Bedi is still focused on making sentimental jewelry that can be treasured and worn for years. That, more than anything, is what makes Made in Earth stand out the most; they aren’t just making jewelry––they’re making memories.

DISTINCT DOWNTOWN DATING NEVER SUFFER THROUGH A BORING DATE AGAIN BY AN DR EW G RANT

The nights are light, warm and teeming with the sound of people leaving work half an hour early to enjoy the beautiful weather. One thing is in the air: romance. All across the city, budding couples are pairing up for that initial spark: the knee-knocking, heart-thudding first date. Everyone knows first dates are crucial; they’re your first chance to impress the potential love of your life… so no pressure. Fortunately, we’ve assembled a few ideas that are bound to impress.

Red Spade Theater, both you and Ready to be dazzled? At the

your date will have your minds blown by Sebastian (his last name is a magician’s secret) in the Theater’s premier show Intimate Miracles. A master of sleight of hand and other illusions, this magician will have you gasping in your seat and whispering “How did he do that?!” And all from the cozy distance of a mere ten feet away. With you and your date as two in an audience of only thirty, there will be plenty of chances to try and spot how Sebastian works his magic––if you can. Magic shows have a childish reputation, but Intimate Miracles has an age requirement and a modest dress code to ensure your experience is as mature and unimpeded as possible. If the idea of a night of laughs, gasps and amazement sounds appealing, check out Sebastian at the Red Spade Theater. Shows are Friday and Saturday evenings.

If your date has a bit of a sweet tooth, you might want to check out Little Italy’s

Extraordinary Desserts.

This adorable café boasts some of the finest, most elegant desserts in the world. Hand-crafted cakes, individually made pastries topped with fruit, exquisite ice cream and so much more fill the glass cases of Extraordinary Desserts. This charming restaurant, located in the heart of downtown, is the perfect place to treat any date. Sit down with a cup of organic coffee or exotic tea and get to know each other over a panini and a plate of artisan cheese. If you believe making your partner laugh is the key to a happy relationship, look no further than the

National Comedy Theater.

The theater offers a wide array of shows, but the main feature is the MainStage Show, presented every Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 and 9:45 pm. Grab a charming dinner downtown and be ready for the curtain to rise. Don’t expect to be a passive patron; this improv troop relies entirely on audience suggestions for the evening’s entertainment, which ensures that no show is ever the same. You’ll be rolling around with laughter each time you go. With adult tickets only costing $17, a date at the National Comedy Theater is bound to start a relationship with laughter—in a good way, of course.

If history is more to your date’s taste, perhaps the

San Diego Air & Space Museum would be a hit. Full of everything

from da Vinci’s sketches about the first flying machines to glimpses into the future of space travel, the museum is perfect for engendering intelligent conversation, strolling through the exhibits and even hand-holding. A date here will be spent arm in arm, gazing up at all that humanity has accomplished in our quest to conquer the skies themselves. Located on the southwest side of Balboa Park, visiting the San Diego Air & Space Museum is the perfect way to spend an afternoon for any bookish or intellectual couple. If it’s going well, you can come out with your date and still have all of Balboa Park to explore—if you can drag yourself away from the wind tunnel!

If all of these options seem a little ambitious, you can always fall back on a classic San Diego date: a lovely early morning stroll through This iconic spot includes 12,000 acres of lovely walking paths, gardens blooming with flowers of every color of the rainbow and a chance to see the rich Spanish architecture of El Prado. Despite what your individual tastes may be, there’s something for everyone at Balboa Park. Take a trip to the world-famous San Diego Zoo, peek into the Museum of Art or stroll though the Botanical Building. Feeling adventurous? Climb the California Tower. Built in 1914, the California Tower has been closed to climbers since 1935. In the last few months, however, the Tower has officially opened to the public. Enjoy sprawling views of San Diego from the top of this iconic building. Years from now, you’ll be talking about that wonderfully romantic first date, all in the heart of one of the most beautiful cities in the country.

DINNER AND A SHOW Theatre and Dinner Pairings Across the County

C

By Emily Glaser

enturies ago, our European ancestors began a rich tradition. Decked in their best fineries—stockings and cravats, bustled dresses and powdered strands—they’d stroll the cobblestoned streets and enter the local theatre. To the sounds of Puccini and Shakespeare, Mozart and Wagner, they’d flutter their fans and smoke their cigars as the best shows of the time unfolded before them. And after the show, top hat and cane in hand, they’d again take to the streets, this time in search of the perfect dinner destination. Over glasses of red wine and feasts of flavorful

dishes they’d reflect on the theatre they’d left and the show they’d seen, debating the predominance of opera or symphony. Today, the streetlamps under which we stroll between shows are electric and the trees that sway overhead are palm, but the tradition carries on. All these years and generations later, on the other side of the globe, there’s still no better way to spend an evening than with dinner and a show. And San Diego offers a plethora of playhouses and proximate restaurants to make yours a night to remember. Across San Diego county, from La Jolla to the Gaslamp, we’ve tallied the best theatre and dining destinations to make a romantic evening out on the town a reality.

SPRECKELS THEATRE AND SEARSUCKER ocated in the heart of the Gaslamp, Spreckels has been an iconic theatre destination for over a century. Since 1912 San Diegans have been taking in shows at the beautiful Spreckels, first as a vaudeville house, then as a movie theater during the golden age of cinema and once again as a live performance venue in recent years. The beautifully restored theatre, which beckons to passersby with its glittering ‘30s era marquee, plays host to a variety of shows every year, from internationally-renowned artists to classic composers. City Ballet also calls the Spreckels home, and during their season you can watch dexterous dancers pirouette and plié across the timeless stage. One of our favorite restaurants in the Gaslamp is located just a stone’s throw from Spreckels. Searsucker, with its corner location, bright windows, airy design and open kitchen, combines the best of downtown’s dining options. Celebrity Chef Brian Malarkey designed an incredible dinner menu featuring local fare that mixes classic and contemporary, like the braised lamb neck with celery root puree and pickled onions or the duck pot pie. If you’re hungry after the show, Searsucker offers the best late night dining in the Gaslamp. Baked brie with strawberry jam, duck fat fries and warm cookies and milk are just a few of the comfort foods on the late night menu that are sure to be more delicious than a soggy burrito from down the street. HORTON GRAND THEATRE AND THE HORTON GRAND IDA BAILEY’S RESTAURANT ith a history as grand and varied as the building itself, Horton Grand Theatre is one of San Diego’s oldest landmarks. The Horton Grand Hotel, comprised of San Diego’s two oldest hotels, stands adjacent to the theatre, and their history’s are inherently intertwined. The hotel has hosted historical celebrities, from famed gunman Wyatt Earp to President Benjamin Harrison, but today you’ll find a more humble sort in the halls of the Horton. The theatre, an intimate off-Broadway style stage that seats just 250 guests, will soon be home to two new companies: Intrepid Theatre Company and San Diego Musical Theatre. This exciting combination of anchor tenants will perform a variety of shows to draw in San Diegans from all walks of life. As you eagerly await these new residencies—which arrive October 1st—settle your craving for a fun night out by catching the Star Girls Burlesque on September 10th! Something else to look forward to? Horton Grand’s upcoming dinner packages with fellow Horton Grand Hotel inhabitant Ida Bailey’s Restaurant. Ida Bailey’s is aptly named after one of the most infamous ladies to ever reside in the once-salacious “Stingaree” neighborhood. Though she made her living as a madam, Bailey was also renowned as one of the best cooks in San Diego. Today you can still savor an incredible meal where her own Canary Cottage once stood. With a relaxing atmosphere, shimmering skylights and deliciously fresh California cuisine (with a touch of a “south of the border” influence), this is the perfect spot to hit refresh before a night of entertainment.

It’s dinner and a show in style at Horton Grand Theatre and Ida Bailey’s.

LA JOLLA PLAYHOUSE AND JAMES’ PLACE ack in 1947, famous founders Gregory Peck, Mel Ferrer and Dorothy McGuire established La Jolla Playhouse as a result of their nostalgia for the oldtime stage. Originally called “The Actors Company” with performances in the La Jolla High School auditorium, the popular productions drew crowds through the ‘60s. La Jolla Playhouse found life again in 1983 with the Mandell Weiss Theatre on the corner of the UCSD campus. The Playhouse has since grown to include two more theatres, including the Mandell Weiss Forum and the Potiker Theatre, which is part of the modern Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center. Many of the shows that pass across the La Jolla Playhouse’s stages go on to Broadway and have garnered an incredible 35 Tony Awards. Upcoming shows like Tiger Style! and Miss You Like Hell have us excited for the promising season ahead. Located on campus alongside the theatre is James’ Place—aptly named because that’s exactly what it is, the restaurant and brainchild of Sushi Master James Holder. After a lifetime of sushimaking and tenure at San Diego’s best high-end restaurants, Holder made James’ Place a reality. Here he combines his signature sushi with Prime and Angus cuts of beef, California wines and local craft beer. From Flat Iron Teppanyaki to Chilean Sea Bass Misoyaki, the melding of flavors and cultures at James’ Place is astounding. Part fine dining, part La Jolla-laid-back, James’ Place is the perfect, accessible accompaniment to a night at the LJP. (cont. on p.68)

NORTH COAST REPERTORY THEATRE AND PACIFICA DEL MAR ome to award-winning and worldclass theatre productions, North Coast Repertory Theatre is a hidden gem in the picturesque landscape of Solana Beach. Unlike other theatre companies around town, North Coast Rep had humble beginnings, building itself slowly into the quintessential destination it is today over the past thirty years. North Coast Rep is also special because of their devotion to local talent. They cull their talent from a pool of native actors, directors and designers to cultivate truly San Diegan productions. You can catch seven mainstage shows annually that will leave you entertained, educated and wowed. The theatre also showcases the work of students studying at the Theatre School with four annual productions. With a summertime season, North Coast Rep is always a great way to beat the heat on date night. If you’re looking for a romantic restaurant to start the evening off right, we’d suggest Pacifica Del Mar, which is just a scenic drive away. With sweeping ocean views and a menu stocked with mouthwatering mainstays, Pacifica Del Mar has long been one of our favorites. If you’re a James Bond-esque vodka drinker, we’d suggest starting at the Ocean Bar, where you’ll find over 100 of the world’s finest vodkas. Then move on to dinner, where seafood takes center stage. Dishes like macadamia crusted mahi mahi and porcini dusted sea scallops will satiate the seafood cravings brought on by those stunning ocean views.

H

THE OLD GLOBE AND THE PRADO ith its dozens of attractions and acres upon acres of manicured views, Balboa Park is like a neighborhood unto itself. Make a night of it by taking in a show at The Old Globe and savoring an elegant meal at The Prado. Since 1935, when the theatre was built for showcasing Shakespeare’s plays during the California Pacific International Exposition, The Old Globe has been entertaining San Diegans almost daily. With its three stages, annual programming like How the Grinch Stole Christmas and summertime Shakespeare, the Globe is a theatre like no other. This season combines classics with modern productions, including Steve Martin’s newest play, Meteor Shower, which will run through September 11th. The Old Globe presents almost 600 shows every year, which means it’s almost always a great theatre destination. Stroll the bricked pathways of the park before or after your show and you’ll be led to The Prado. Housed in the park’s picturesque center, The Prado offers a charming and historic environment alongside a thoroughly modern menu. Try the watermelon, kale & point reyes blue salad if you’re in the mood for something light, or the lobster bucatini if you’re craving something hearty. Lounge in the restaurant’s sweet and sparkling patio, and enjoy a cocktail or dessert to finish the night with piquant punctuation. No matter which of San Diego’s luxurious theatres you choose, there’s always a nearby restaurant just waiting for you to catch dinner and a show.

FROM FIRST SMELL TO LAST BITE Devour San Diego’s Authentic International Cuisine By Robin Satterwhite

Traditional cuisine is bursting with flavor at Kous Kous Moroccan Bistro.

W

hether you’re hitting the town with friends, on a date with your main squeeze or simply a full-blown foodie, finding authentic restaurants packed with flavorful international cuisine can sometimes be a challenge. While San Diego boasts real Mexican eateries on almost every corner, finding international cuisine from other nationalities isn’t quite as easy—so let’s narrow your search. Look no further for stellar San Diego joints serving authentic Moroccan, Italian and Russian dishes! Known to many as our foodie district, Hillcrest is a neighborhood where it’s easy to walk down main street and run into numerous eateries with an authentic flair. For example, hidden in a basement along the bustling 4th Avenue is Kous Kous Moroccan Bistro. At first it can be a little strange walking down into the sunken entrance, but it soon becomes a flicker of magic that transports patrons to Morocco with the relaxing, dimly lit ambiance and culturally artistic design. Whether it’s owner and top culinary expert Chef Moumen or his brother Paul greeting guests upon arrival, the charismatic, humble and good humor of these well-traveled brothers adds warmth and an inviting atmosphere as an exemplification of what Moroccan cuisine offers the culinary world. Ambiance and people are enough to enchant before even a drink touches the lips, but when one of Kous Kous Moroccan’s signature drinks ignites fireworks within any palate, the culinary element of the adventure has begun. Rose petal reduction, mahia fig liqueur and smashed cucumber are a few of the exciting flavors added in to the authentic cocktails for new tastes and exciting combinations. Not to be outdone, the food is also beautifully presented and bound to overwhelm your palate with a mix of sweet and savory flavors. Starting with the caramelized carrot appetizer, Kous Kous Moroccan Bistro’s sweet and savory dishes are based in a style of fall-off-the-bone slow cooking—as opposed to sautéing in grease and fat—that help mix with incredibly flavorful yet muted spices for what could be the best chicken tagine or kous kous experienced in San Diego’s Moroccan cuisine scene. Just a few feet down the street, Charisma Cucina Italiana is another remarkable restaurant owned by brother and sister Antonio and Maria Pia. Nestled amongst the fun, festive and fabulous eateries of Hillcrest, the sultry red color of Charisma’s sign and stylish simplicity of the outside decor stands on their own to grab attention and create unique curiosity. Upon entering, the energy switches direction to a calming cream and candle-lit space that is clean, cozy and quaint. Upon arrival, this Italian eatery transports guests to a family restaurant inspired by the Amalfi Coast. Charisma provides a perfect setting for an intimate or small group that wishes to feel like they’re eating in their own home in Italy. The feeling of home and Italy flows through Charisma in the way Antonio and Maria Pia not only provide daily specials, but also craft personally requested dishes—some that aren’t on the menu. With a wonderful staff, Charisma’s welcoming and familial air will fill your heart while their delicious food will fill your stomach. Enjoy handmade pastas and decadent desserts for every occasion. Prepared with fresh herbs, Charisma’s Italian food is bursting with flavor—perfect to pair with a smooth Italian wine. Hillcrest isn’t the only neighborhood exuding authentic panache. Located on the busy El Cajon Boulevard in North Park, the “Russian Cuisine” sign of Pectopah Pomegranate Restaurant may have a prime corner location, but it’s surprisingly easy to miss if you aren’t careful. A popular location Pectopah Pomegranate offers authentic Russian-Georgian meals.

Charisma Cucina Italiana combines family flair with fresh food.

for locals, foodies and creatives, this RussianGeorgian cuisine is a delicacy and treat. Inside, the simple décor is accompanied by colorful strings of lights, low-lit lanterns and dark wooden tables which sit underneath cultural flags. Surrounded by wonderful pieces of artwork—both modern and conventional—creativity and traditional Russian décor join for visual nourishment before satiating the palate. Traditional Georgian beers such as Kostritzer and Pranquster are available, as are non-alcoholic drinks such as Natakhtari Lemonade (with added fruit flavors) and Russian Samovar Tea. Of course, there’s the always famous Russian vodka to once again burn your throat and jump-start your taste buds for what is guaranteed to be an adventure of flavors. Pomegranate serves dishes that look appetizingly familiar—such as the beef stroganoff, chicken shaslik (kebab), borcht and lamb stew—and unusual dishes that amaze like khachapuri (a Georgian cheese pie) or meat soup dumplings. Like many authentic and personally owned establishments, no credit cards are accepted, so be sure to bring other forms of payment. Unlike mass-produced chain establishments, these San Diego international restaurants aren’t the kinds of places you visit to simply satiate your hunger; dining at these three locations is an experience. These are the places we visit to ensnare our five senses and turn a meal into a memory. These local stops are more than just appetizing restaurants—they’re authentic international experiences served on a San Diego platter.

“O

rganic,” “gluten-free,” “farm-to-table…” These buzz words have flown off of our tongues since the food revolution became mainstream and talks of “tree huggers” and “hippie bark-eaters” began to dwindle. Eating real food—fresh food—improves our way of life every day. From seed to table, local ranchers and farmers provide organic products and inspire chefs to create meals that satisfy our deepest cravings. Some of the best San Diego eateries offer farm-fresh cuisine; from breakfast to happy hour and even through dessert, enjoy a natural dining experience at some of the tastiest farm-to-table restaurants in town.

HILLARY CLINTON VS. THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES Will America Get Justice for Clinton? By Bob Morey with David Allen

F

riends, Americans, Patriots: Lend me your ears as we examine one of the major presidential candidates in the 2016 election, one Hillary Clinton. Unless you’ve been locked away in a deprivation tank for too long, you know that Hillary Clinton has spent the last year defending herself to both the FBI and the court of public opinion in regards to the Clinton email scandal. The Reader’s Digest version of events: Clinton reportedly used a private email server to send thousands of classified emails during her tenure as Secretary of State. At best, this is a case of poor judgment and a lack of understanding about how confidential information operates; at worst, this breach of national security is a potential federal offense. Potential being the keyword: as of July 6th, Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced that no charges would be filed against Clinton; on July 7th, the State Department reopened the investigation. The government (and the country itself ) is well-divided on the Clinton email scandal. While her staunch supporters whole-heartedly believe Clinton can do no wrong, the rest of the country isn’t sure. Perhaps it’s due to the increasingly fishy circumstances surrounding Clinton’s case. Her story about the contents of the emails sent over her private server has changed multiple times throughout the months. Even more damning, her husband, former President Bill Clinton, met with Attorney General Loretta Lynch in private just days before she made her statement regarding the Clinton email scandal. To the surprise of no one, after her private meetings with former President Clinton, Lynch proclaimed no charges be filed. In an even less shocking turn of events, Clinton has since declared that Lynch would continue on as her Attorney General should she be elected President. Perhaps if this were a one-time scandal—a shocking break from the norm—it would be easier to accept this as an accidental transgression. Unfortunately, scandal follows Bill and Hillary Clinton wherever they go, and with the scandal follows a stream of lies. From the Monica Lewinsky scandal to the Bengazi scandal, from Travelgate to the Whitewater Controversy, misconduct inevitably travels with the Clintons through every turn of their political careers. Even when it comes to fundraising, the Clintons are shrouded in suspicious activity. The Clinton Foundation has handled billions of dollars of foreign contributions over the years, billions of dollars running though the Clinton Foundation coming through their Canadian Foundation, where the donors do not have to be disclosed. The scandals that follow Bill and Hillary Clinton, this politically self-ordained royalty, are far too long for their short political careers. But regardless of the dubious information surrounding the Clinton campaign, one thing holds true: the Hillary Clinton email scandal should invalidate her chances at winning the election. Either she knowingly lied and broke the law, or she was accidentally inept and unable to follow security protocols. Neither is the mark of an efficient leader. The world is watching what may turn out to be the most bought and paid for election in our country’s history. No matter what you think of the nominees running for election this year, one thing is blatantly clear: within the Clinton campaign, something doesn’t quite add up.
