Hotel Del may have modernized its amenities, but it has maintained the charm and superior dedication to its guests that continue to make it a premier San Diego resort. Popular travel review website TripAdvisor has accumulated more than 3,000 reviews of the iconic beach resort, with more than 2,100 of those reviews touting it as “breathtaking,” “a dream come true” and a “wonderful classic hotel.” It is a short drive to all the major San Diego attractions, including Sea World, the San Diego Zoo and downtown San Diego, yet its island location distances guests from the woes and bustle of city life. If a drive across Coronado Bridge doesn’t seem appealing, Coronado Island itself is an adorable town with postcard–worthy

ravel, even when carefully planned, rarely proceeds as effortlessly as we’d like; there’s always some kink or unexpected event that slithers its way into our organized regiment, pushing us off course and bringing dreaded stress, the exact psychological wrecking ball our plan was intended to eliminate. We may harbor dreams of becoming an aimless vagabond without an agenda, our only concern to hitch a ride before it gets dark, but most of us actually like to have some sort of structure to our wanderings because traveling should be comfortable, lavish and unforgettable, creating a blissful escape from

reality that is rarely found without a plan. There are certain means of transportation that involve less stress than others and the first step to designing an extraordinary travel experience is identifying the pros and cons between these methods. For example, flying across the country is usually much more pleasurable than driving, and driving across the country is usually much more pleasurable than riding a bike. Better than any of these forms of transportation, however, is another option that has become extremely desirable because of the sheer exclusiveness, freedom, and perfect carelessness that epitomizes this medium for world travel: the yacht. This highly–regarded and luxurious vessel is the vehicle of choice for the most wealthy and influential people in the world, and with good reason, too. A yacht gives cruisers their own floating villa which can be guided to wherever the soul sees fit and puts enough water between them and their chaotic lives to drown the stresses and worries of everyday life. But the yacht’s greatest attribute as a transporter is the sheer freedom that comes with sailing the oceans of the world without restriction or limitation. Even the longest yachts can access pockets of the globe restricted from larger ships, turning beautiful island archipelagos and hard–to–pronounce ports Fraser Yacht’s Seawolf. into secluded destinations. Places that have been seen by only a few westernized eyes become easily available when traveling by yacht, literally enlarging the world by allowing passage to places thought to be mythical. Though a fifty–million dollar yacht may seem inaccessible for the average American, there are still ways by which one can experience the joys of a yacht without the hefty price tag. Yacht charters offer interested seafarers a more affordable way to enjoy the sophisticated freedom of life at twenty knots and provide an all–inclusive option to cruise privately and without the complexity of conventional travel. The Solandge offers access to the world. BELOW: Modern yachts offer an intimate but all-inclusive atmosphere.
On a yacht charter you are in control and your decisions may be as whimsical or premeditated as you’d like. Your travel plan consists of nothing more than the choice between heading north, east, west, or south, or choosing no direction at all and simply floating in the middle of the great blue sea. The perks of chartering a yacht easily trump any other form of travel and turn the journey into as much of an experience as the destination—not to mention the perk of increased legroom. In San Diego, there are multiple options when seeking a yacht for personal use. One company in particular, Fraser Yachts, offers an extensive selection of circumnavigating vessels for purchase and for charter. Located on the waterfront of the San Diego Harbor, Fraser Yachts is a professional, high–class source if you’re in the market to buy a vessel or want to rent one for the week, crew and captain included. The yacht experience gives you the ability to explore the
42

world on your agenda, but if you’d rather have no agenda at all, Fraser Yachts has you covered. With 89 different charter yachts available on the company’s website, the options are plentiful when it comes to choosing the right vessel for you and whoever else you plan to enlist on your salty adventure. On the lower end, charter the 193–foot Seawolf, which spends most of its time in the South Pacific during the summer, for $180,000 a week (a fraction of the purchasing price for such an elegant vessel). Or charter the 279–foot Solandage, which will go wherever you want no matter the season, for upwards of $1,000,000 a week. Another option, if you’re wary of your ability to guide your yacht’s captain somewhere divine, is to purchase one of Fraser Yachts’ destination events, which follow an extensive fifteen day itinerary as your vessel of choice sails to extravagant world landmarks and cities. The Croatia charter, for example, sails from Venice, Italy, and continues south through the Adriatic Sea while stopping at historic Croatian cities like Rovinj, Brijuni and Zadar. Though more expensive than a traditional vacation, a yacht charter is an attainable and absolutely fantastic way to see the world. They say that life is about the journey, not the destination, but those words of advice don’t exactly ring true when traveling by train, car, or by plane, when you must endure cramped quarters and spend hours waiting to arrive at your destination. But when journeying by yacht, the axiom gains truth. When standing on the smooth deck, pursing your lips around a Cuban or wrapping your fingers around a cocktail, the last thing on your mind is that pesky destination.

The new HondaJet, which has actually been in development since the early 1980s but only this year became FAA certified for production, will feature the unique design of having its two engines sitting over the wings rather than under or on the tail as is typically found on small jets. The HondaJet also features a sleek composite fuselage that provides extra space in the cabin, allowing the HondaJet to carry seven passengers and includes an enclosed lavatory. The over–the–wing

engine mount design, natural laminar flow wing and fuselage nose combine to make the HondaJet the fastest, most spacious and most fuel–efficient jet in its class. “Our goal with the HondaJet was to create a Honda-original airplane that would bring new value to customers through new and advanced technologies,” Michimasa Fujino, president and CEO of Honda Aircraft Company, told Popular Science Magazine earlier this year after the magazine named the HondaJet as the “Best of What’s New” in aerospace for 2014.
The HondaJet is fastest in its class at a maximum cruise speed of 483 mph, soars highest in its class with a maximum altitude of 43,000 feet and is the most fuel–efficient light jet in its class by up to 17 percent. Setting Your Sails for Retirement PLANNING WISELY FOR THE VACATION OF A LIFETIME
L
BY VICKI SWEETEN
et’s face it– planning a vacation is fun. At the mere mention of the word, you are already in Hawaii or trekking the trail to Machu Picchu. But don’t wander too far just yet; retirement planning is about planning for the future you have always dreamed of, much like a long–awaited vacation. You may already have a plan in place and are following that plan, but if you have delayed reaching your goals, don’t despair. Everyone has a reason to delay planning for retirement—work, babies, marriage, or watching The Bachelor—and it’s easy to get blown off course. But you just have to adjust your sails toward the outcome you want. Here, some quick tips to get you back on course for the retirement of your dreams. Retirement planning, like planning for vacation, takes a little bit of time. Rather than look at it as a lengthy task, see it as a forever vacation. • Don’t leave your 401(k) behind. IRAs often have more options than a 401(k) plan. Let your planner help you focus all your assets towards your goal. • If you’ve recently married, had a baby or had other big life changes, don’t forget to update your beneficiaries. • Don’t plan your retirement on a whim, tip, or hunch. We meet people all the time that lose hundreds of thousands of dollars based on a company that seems cool or advice from an unknowledgeable coworker or friend. • Since we are talking about travel, I would be remiss to not mention global diversification. Last year the S&P 500 was the top performer. Investors may think this is the next place to go, but investing on last year’s best performer is like betting at Del Mar on a winning horse, just after winning the race. • And what about being able to retire early? So much can be done with a plan in place. Throw your thoughts onto your vision board and discuss them with your Certified Financial Planner™ professional when you meet with them. As the wife of a planner, I always leave the complex planning decisions to the Certified Financial Planner™ professionals and you should, too!

WILL YOU ARRIVE AT A NURSING HOME OR YOUR DREAM TRIP?
I

magine planning your dream vacation, the trip of a lifetime; hours spent researching, months organizing and preparing, then finally booking the itinerary with much anticipation. The day comes, shuttled to the airport, luggage checked, plane boarded and seat taken and ready for takeoff. Once airborne, the pilot welcomes everyone aboard, reassuring a good flight to ALASKA! Wait, Alaska? I’m going to Tahiti, there must be a mistake! The only mistake is that you’re on the wrong plane. What’s your destination? Are you on the right plane? Has all your planning and preparation been based on the correct principles? Your destination in life, your hopes and dreams for longevity, vitality and function, especially in retirement, are common goals, but most fall short of their expectations. It is true that Americans are consistently living longer, with life expectancy for women now in the low 80s and men as high as 79. In fact, the fastest growing segment of the population today is centenarians, or those that make it to 100 years of age. It’s always inspiring to hear and see news reports of exceptional seniors celebrating their 90th birthday skydiving or competing in 1500 meter swims. Unfortunately, these are the exceptions, with most advanced seniors spending their remaining years chemically preserved in a nursing home. Our lifespan may be lengthening, but our health–span, or length of healthy years, is not. To go the distance and fulfill your desired destination of longevity with vitality, your health–span must match your lifespan or length of days. To live your ideal 100 year lifestyle, you must have a plan based on the correct principles of health and longevity and adopt a lifestyle that is producing the highest number of healthy and vital centenarians.
48
FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines
Many often assume that this extraordinary longevity is attributed to complicated medicines and expensive modern technological therapies, but that isn’t the case. Recent research of geographic locations called Blue Zones, where many live relatively healthy and vital lives to 100 and beyond, often achieve this longevity without drugs and expensive high tech treatments. A common lifestyle of healthy foods, daily exercise and low stress in a culture that values family, faith and friends is the simple secret. If you weren’t fortunate enough to be born into a Blue Zone, there is still hope. Each and every one of us has the potential to fulfill a destiny of longevity with vitality. Adopting the correct principles and making the right choices for health will assure that you get on the “right plane.” Your body is designed to heal, be well and not get sick when given the right opportunities. Those right opportunities include adopting a lifestyle of daily exercise, like walking, hiking and weight training, and a diet of large servings of plants, vegetables, seeds and nuts with lots of water and moderate red wine intake. Enjoy other stress reducing outlets, whether through sport, hobby or a social network with friends. Stop smoking and get 20 minutes of sun exposure three times per week to fill your vitamin D stores, bolstering your immune system and protecting you against cancer. Finally, work on your posture and spinal alignment, avoiding the dreaded hunched and forward head posture. Research shows that posture improvements can increase lung capacity and oxygenation as well as reduce stress on the cardiovascular system and slow the aging process. Make sure you’re on the right plane to your dream destination!
How are you aging: Rapidly or healthfully? Choose your destiny. Chronic, recurring aches and pains, poor posture, bulging or herniated and degenerative disc problems and other stress related illnesses such as head, neck and back pain, sinus/allergies, digestive problems, difficulty sleeping and fatigue are all signs of a rapidly aging body with impending illness. Don’t cover-up, deny or learn to live with these common symptoms any more, find and correct the cause. For 25 years Drs Melendez of Gold Coast Chiropractic Center have been helping patients heal with a system that corrects the cause and promotes healing fast. Less pain, more energy, more function with vitality and longevity can once again become your destiny. Make the call for a no-charge consultation with the doctors and re-write your destiny today, your Ideal 100 Year Lifestyle!

Destination: Chic
A GUIDE TO TRAVELING IN STYLE FOR ANY VACATION
N
BY B I A N C A K A S AW D I S H
o matter your destination, it’s important to always be on top of your style game. The beauty of traveling is that it gives you the opportunity to experience a whole new world. Whether you’re setting off to Saint– Tropez, Switzerland, Morocco, or Paris, all travelistas love to make stylish statements. Knowing what to take on a getaway is critical. As with most things, it becomes easier when a plan is in place. Here, FINE Magazine’s tips on traveling chic; this guide will provide stylish looks for all destinations. Jet-setters, sit tight.
On Travel Essentials First thing’s first. Wherever you’re off to, make sure your luggage is appropriate. Keep your bag organized with Jessie Georgina’s Wind–N–Sea 3–in–1 Toiletry Bag, $95. The bright pops of color will brighten up any bag and the slick nylon saves your clothes from spills. When preparing for a trip, there are certain items you should never go without. For example, accessories, red lipstick, a scarf, sandals as well as pumps, sunglasses, and a little black dress. Last but not least? A camera, to document all of your favorite moments. When it comes to jewelry, a little bit goes a long way. Make sure to include a statement piece of jewelry on all your travels to add just the right touch of glamour to any look. The Melinda Maria Chevron Cuff by Fairen Del, $198, is just the way to do it. This cuff can work with any outfit, from a casual day in the city to a lavish dinner abroad. For the Relaxing Vacay As white beaches and blue seas are what a relaxing vacation entails, try and go along with that beachy vibe. Add some

patterned pieces to the mix while you’re at the beach. You’ll need a selection of cover–ups, shorts, bikinis and wedges to transition your look from sunrise to sunset. Of course, sunglasses are mandatory, like these Fendi Mirrored Geometric Sunglasses, Bloomingdale’s, $450. For the Chilly Vacay As this may be the toughest type of vacation to pack for, think of essentials here. Try and bring only one heavy coat and save room for all of your basics, like knee–high socks, scarves and leggings. Make sure to bring things that are easy to layer while bundled up. Bring accessories and makeup in bright hues to make a statement even in the chilly weather. Something to keep in mind—skincare. As the cool weather can be harsh, products that make sure your skin keeps that glow, like the Youthful Skin Renewal Set by Murad, at Headlines The Salon, $45, are a lifesaver! For the Adventurous Vacay Honor the art and adventure of your destination by picking tailored pieces in bold colors. Keep in mind, now is not the time to

attempt a fashion evolution by experimenting with trends. Keep it casual and simple and make sure these are pieces you can move in! Don’t forget to pack your sunglasses as well as some practical footwear and, to top it off, a hat, like this Lanvin Straw Hat, Barneys, $595. For the Tourist’s Vacay It’s time to go très chic! For a touristy vacation, when it comes to style, less is more. For a day of sightseeing, bring a lightweight jacket to bear any type of weather. Keep your look refined and easily transitioned. Bring a few simple pieces in mostly neutral colors, then top them off with edgy pieces like patterned blazers and bright stilettos. Make a statement with scarves and accessories, like this BUCO Lace Clutch, Peaches En Regalia, $115. And since you can’t go touring the town without a red lip, go for a deep, rich red like Chanel Rouge Allure Coromandel, Nordstrom, $35. For the Artsy Vacay With a mix of history and culture, an artsy destination offers a little bit of everything. What to bring? Accessories with a lot of texture that can feel festive, yet relaxed enough for a chic dinner or a day of strolling seaside. Make sure to bring a colorful bikini for a pop of fun, like the ‘Chloe’ Wrap Bikini Top by L Space, $73 at Nordstrom. And don’t forget all the fun accessories for this type of vibrant vacation– chunky jewelry and bright makeup help you stand out in a crowd of artists.

Escape to Ensenada HOTEL CORAL AND MARINA OFFERS A LUXURIOUS RETREAT CLOSE TO HOME
By Emily Glaser Photography by Sean Dorsey
A
short, southerly journey over the Mexican border and along the steep, cliffy coast of Baja brings San Diegans to the paradisiacal retreat of Hotel Coral and Marina. Hotel Coral, a fairly recent addition to Baja’s resort scene at just 19 years old, is situated on the cusp of the bustling seaport town of Ensenada. Rife with the charm of its local surroundings, but exclusive enough to provide for even the choosiest traveller, Hotel Coral is the perfect getaway for the superior San Diegan. Hotel Coral and Marina has much to offer for every type of traveler. The large resort, which boasts 147 rooms, 3 pools and a large variety of meeting rooms and banquet settings, also plays host to the only resort–side marina in all of Ensenada. The Hotel offers a dock– side home for seafaring travelers from around the world—as well as a variety of celebrities (rumors of Paul Walker and Sofia Vergara floated along the tips of many tongues). Hotel Coral’s signature restaurant, Bistro & Cava, will please your palate with every meal of the day. Wake up early–or late–for their famous brunch buffet, featuring everything from breakfast staples (fruit, yogurt with granola, a build–your–own omelet station, and made– to–order pancakes), to traditional Mexican dishes, like the scrumptious Barbacoa and fresh tortillas. Lunch and dinner menus offer a similar array of variety; from perfectly prepared filet mignon, to bacon–wrapped stuffed shrimp, to a delicious burger topped with freshly prepared guacamole (truly, one of the best burgers I’ve ever had!), every item on Bistro & Cava’s menu is sure to delight– ensuring you never have to leave the resort for a meal. Hotel Coral also has a selection of bars to choose from, as well as a Happy Hour that can’t be beat (buy–one–get–one–free Pina Coladas? Yes, please!). Though the meals may seem like the highlight of your trip to Hotel Coral, the resort offers bountiful activities to keep you busy between snacks. If the gorgeous outdoor pool, rimmed with in–water lounge chairs, isn’t enough to keep you distracted, what about a trip to the C Spa? The spa offers a variety of treatments and premium beauty brands and is even the exclusive Baja California provider of Natura Bissé, the luxury line of beauty products known for its innovative Diamond Collection regenerative skin creams. We suggest trying C Spa’s Vinotherapy; this one–of–a–kind treatment is locally sourced, using ingredients from the lavender–scented grounds of the Quinta Monasterio winery in nearby Valle de Guadalupe. You’re buffed, rinsed, wrapped and lacquered, ensuring that you leave the C Spa with the glowing, silky–soft skin of a newborn babe. Hotel Coral’s new wellness program offers a variety of activities to keep you not only busy, but fit, too. From early–morning beach walks to oceanfront and vineyard yoga, the wellness program offers a fit–girl’s dream vacation. The program even includes personal training sessions in the newly renovated gym, which features state–of–the–art Technogym equipment. So indulge in that flan at the brunch buffet–you’ll torch those calories in the gym. Between the C Spa, the pool, the wellness program, the food and the drinks, we don’t see any reason to ever walk through the sliding doors of the hotel’s exit.

“Hotel Coral’s new wellness program offers a variety of activities to keep you not only busy, but fit, too.”
But if you do decide to leave this little piece of paradise, the hotel is ready to provide. Hotel Coral provides shuttles to nearby attractions, including downtown Ensenada and wineries in Valle de Guadalupe. Stroll the streets of Ensenada in search of the perfect street taco–we promise, you’ll find them there! The Ensenada Fish Market provides a glimpse into the historic traditions of the town. Or head inland for a different type of pallet pleasing. Valle de Guadalupe is home to nearly 100 wineries, in part because its climate, which is comparable to Tuscany, and is one of the best in the world for growing grapes. From strong–armed cabs to sweet chardonnays, every vino is sure to find a wine they enjoy in the valley (for our favorites, see page 59). After your day of adventure, return to your room at Hotel Coral for the ultimate in comfort. Every room boasts a balcony with a stunning view of the marina and bay, so you can watch the sun set over the great Pacific. If you’re lucky enough to snag a Presidential Suite, indulge in the jacuzzi tub and rinse off with the sweet scents of Bvlgari. Cuddle up in a plush, white robe and relax into the soft folds of your bed. With silken white sheets and perfectly plump pillows, we can almost guaranteed you’ll forget your own bed in no time. As your eyes flicker closed a smile just might grace your lips for tomorrow, here at Hotel Coral, is simply another day in paradise.

Valle de Guadalupe’s FIN Est Wineries Monte Xanic Perched atop an amber mountain sits Monte Xanic, one of the finest wineries in Valle de Guadalupe, Ensenada’s own dreamlike wine valley. The spacious, modern building blends seamlessly with its desert–like surroundings and echoes with the sounds of joyous vinos. A private tour reveals the largest wine cellar in Latin America, carved into and cooled by the ancient stone of the mountain. The entire process of winemaking at Monte Xanic is fueled by nature and gravity, the wine flowing downward into the cellar’s aged barrels. Monte Xanic produces a total of 14 wines and exports 7–a select few of which you can find at your local Whole Foods. We suggest trying the award–winning sauvignon blanc first, a sweet and crisp serenade of flavors. Next, the cabernet, a bold but well–balanced mix of red berries that you almost have to chew. And finally, Calixa, a mix of cabernet and syrah specifically blended for younger drinkers. Since Mexico is not traditionally a wine–drinking country, Monte Xanic is trying to woo in a younger crowd with Calixa, but we don’t think it’ll have any trouble wooing you, too. “Xanic” is the Native American word for “first flower after the rain,” and, one of the oldest wineries in the Valle de Guadalupe, Monte Xanic is the proverbial first flower of the valley.
Hacienda La Lomita Hacienda La Lomita is like the younger, hipper cousin of Monte Xanic. Nestled a little deeper in the valley and hidden along a dirt road, Hacienda La Lomita is a family–owned and operated venture with a signature pride of place. Custom artwork adorns the walls of the tasting room, but take a step outside and see the operation firsthand. All of Hacienda La Lomita’s equipment is mobile, allowing the winemakers to push it over portholes in the floor that lead to the next step below (free–flow winemaking is employed here, too). The third level deep below is, like Monte Xanic, a cellar carved into the natural earth surrounding the winery. Hacienda La Lomita’s wines are award–winning and as varied as any connoisseur could dream. From the chardonnay, which is as sweet and drinkable as juice, to deep, smoky reds. And if you can get your hands on a bottle of their Artisanal wine, a different varietal of which they produce every year using the best grapes, you must try it. Made with zero control in French oak barrels, it’s guaranteed to be one of the best wines to touch your tongue this year. After your tasting, wander down to Hacienda La Lomita’s own restaurant. Set on lush green grass and nestled in between rows upon rows of gnarled grape vines, the outdoor restaurant is a feast for the eyes and mouth. Trust the chef with your dinner for a tasty sensation of local flavors.

onsistently ranked among the best restaurants in San Diego for its urban flair and style, Café Japengo allows guests to venture into exotic culinary territory while surrounded by warm woods, Asian–style furnishings and subdued lighting. “While some of our sushi and hot food have changed and progressed throughout the years, we have stayed true to serving the highest quality of product presented with simplistic artistry,” says Executive Chef Jerry Warner. Earning a degree in Fitness Management from Humboldt State University, Warner also worked at a Japanese sushi bar owned by one of his college professors. From there, he moved on and began his sushi career at Café Japengo when the restaurant first opened in February of 1990. Warner spent the next six years as the personal apprentice to Master Sushi Chef Osamu “Fuji” Fujita, who eventually became Corporate Sushi Chef for Hyatt Hotels Corporation. “My mentor, known as Fuji–san, was the one who really gave me the tools to be a respected sushi chef,” explains Warner. “He was from the old school of sushi, where discipline and attention to detail were the rules to live by.” Since his promotion to Executive Sushi Chef in 1996, Warner has helped lead Café Japengo to numerous awards and accolades, including the California Restaurant Association’s Gold Medallion Award for Best Sushi in both 2005 and 2006. Warner was named “Master Sushi Chef—Best of Show” at the 2005 California Rice Commission and Sushi Masters Competition. Warner believes the best part of being a chef is to immediately see the pleasure a guest experiences when they eat the food you prepare. He views cooking as a social event where people come together to enjoy the simple pleasures in life, such as good food, company and, of course, a nice bottle of wine. “First and foremost, a sushi chef must have the discipline and passion to learn a skill that has been around for hundreds of years,” he says. “It definitely helps to have an artistic eye in arranging your creations and a skilled hand in cutting each fish to maximize its freshness and beauty.” When entering the front door of Café Japengo, one is immediately faced with three distinct dining venues, all arranged to maximize the social environment so important to chef Warner. To the right is an intimate bar area and small outdoor patio for more relaxed dining. Further into the restaurant is a spacious dining room with booths and tables perfect for the more formal dining experience. But the centerpiece of this location is a wrap–around sushi bar where you can sit face–to– 70

face with the experts as they create signature items fresh from the sea. No matter which you choose, expect to dine on some of the best dishes in San Diego. The menu at Café Japengo has stayed true to its history with original items, such as the ten–ingredient fried rice, Japengo Pot Stickers and the Char–Siu Roasted Duck. Other items change with the seasons and the sushi is always prepared with the personality and skill of the individual chef. In addition, Warner tries to use organic ingredients whenever possible. “When you have such a wide array of dishes like we do here at Japengo, it is impossible to use 100% organic ingredients, but we really do strive to use local and sustainable products as much as we can,” he says. “We stopped serving Toro a few years back because of the reduced population of Bluefin tuna.” During my most recent visit, I opted for some favorites that I’ve enjoyed for years. Starting with a traditional feast of spicy edamame, I immediately scanned the selection of specialty rolls. My choice was the ever–popular Summer Roll, stuffed with spicy crabmeat, broccolini, grilled shrimp and avocado and topped with velvety salmon slides, lime and sweet ponzu. The Curry Dusted Calamari is just right, served with a tangy Thai–lime vinaigrette and chuka salad. The preparation of the Fire Roasted Fanny Bay Oysters, delivered fresh from the cold waters off Vancouver Island, is a nice surprise, boasting subtle flavors of braised leeks and lemongrass butter and served with a slightly salty tobiko roe. Another favorite is the Miso Butterfish, brought to the table floating in a warm truffle broth and accompanied with jemiji mushrooms, shrimp dumplings, bok choy and gobo root. The flesh is so tender, it is difficult to use chopsticks, so I recommend scooping every drop with a large spoon. For the grand finale, I had to indulge in the Tempura Banana dessert, served in a traditional style with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce and chocolate ganache. This luscious concoction proved irresistible in presentation and flavor, but a challenge for my healthy mantra. Oh well, nobody’s perfect! (cafejapengo.com).

Brave New Season
THE LA JOLLA PLAYHOUSE KICKS OFF THE SEASON WITH SPIRIT BY ERICA MINER
ony Award–winning La Jolla Playhouse is internationally renowned for creating some of the most exciting and adventurous work in American theatre through its new play development initiatives, its innovative Without Walls series, artist residencies and commissions. Founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and Mel Ferrer and reborn in 1983 under the artistic leadership of Des McAnuff, the Playhouse has had 25 productions transfer to Broadway and garnered 35 Tony Awards, among them Jersey Boys and The Who’s Tommy. Now led by Artistic Director Christopher Ashley and Managing Director Michael S. Rosenberg, the Playhouse counts as its current Artist–in–Residence renowned actor B.D. Wong (M. Butterfly, Oz). Erica Miner chats with Ashley about the upcoming season and the world–premiere musical Come from Away, which Ashley is directing. EM: Your 2015–2016 season has been described as a “Brave New Season.” What are its “brave” aspects? CA: The Playhouse’s adventurous spirit soars in this season of all new work. Each of our productions depicts defining moments across a variety of cultures and communities—from thousands of international passengers descending on a small Canadian town in Come From Away, to a glimpse into the mind of 1963 March on Washington architect Bayard Rustin in Blueprints to Freedom, to the journey of a seminal Yiddish play to Broadway in the early 20th century in Indecent, to Guards at the Taj, which tackles complex questions of identity and history with a wicked sense of humor and a keen theatrical eye. Is it a challenge to handle dual roles of Artistic Director and Stage Director? The unique challenges of both are what make my job so exciting and fulfilling. I love the process of developing a new play, a reimagined classic, or a tried and true work, as well as the process of Jeffrey Rockwell and Kevin Bailey programming a season with phenomenal artisans from across the wow audiences at country around the world, and bringing them to our audiences. the Northand Coast Repertory Theatre.

As a director, are you equally passionate about both musicals and straight plays? I’m passionate about the theatre—the subjects and themes it tackles, the world it evokes and the journey of its characters that come together on the stage. I enjoy alternating between musicals and plays. Musicals are mayhem. Directing a new one is a nonstop onslaught, like commanding a battle, while directing a play is usually calmer, more focused and intense. Tell us about the world-premiere musical you are directing. Come from Away is based on the true story of 38 planes carrying thousands of people from across the globe, diverted to Gander, Newfoundland on September 11th, 2001. Undaunted by culture clashes and language barriers, this small town’s spirited people cheered the stranded travelers with music, an open bar and the recognition that we’re all part of a global family. It’s an uncanny, incredibly touching piece that reflects the days following 9–11. A big part of our mission is to develop new work and I can’t think of a better example to kick off our new season. Sounds truly inspiring. What is it like to work with award– winning composers and lyricists such as Robert Lopez (Book of Mormon) and Kristen Anderson–Lopez (Frozen)? It is such a privilege to have the Up Here creative team at the Playhouse to develop their new musical. Bobby, Kristen and Alex are the new musical theatre rock stars of this generation. We look forward to collaborating with them on this extraordinarily witty and winning piece. Please tell us a little more about Young Performers at Playhouse and YPC (Young Performers’ Conservatory). Our popular, multi–step education and outreach programs, such as Young Performers at La Jolla Playhouse (YP@LJP), are an extremely important part of what we offer. They begin with Young Performers’ Workshop (YPW), which invites students in grades 3–12 to explore a wide range of theatre skills. Young Performers’ Academy (YPA)
WORLD PREMIERE MUSICAL
allows students entering grades 5–12 the opportunity to take their theatre skills to the next level. High school students interested in careers in professional theatre can take part in the Young Performers’ Conservatory. It’s an inspiration to see these young performers build character and confidence as they are guided by energetic and passionate teaching artists. Exploring all that’s soul stirring, enlightening, challenging and fun about the world of theatre is an extraordinary way to spend a summer. How hard did you have to work to generate the increase in subscriptions toward extending the first two season productions? I’m very proud of the efforts of our staff. It’s been tremendously gratifying to see the overwhelming response to our entire season comprised of all new plays and musicals. Extending these first two productions to accommodate additional subscribers truly demonstrates our audiences’ passion for new work, and their willingness to participate in these new theatrical adventures. How important is the participation of your donors and patrons? Our donors and patrons are essential to the artistic life of the institution. The Playhouse has been the birthplace of numerous acclaimed plays and musicals, such as Doug Wright’s Pulitzer Prize–winning I Am My Own Wife, as well as Tony Award– winning musicals Jersey Boys and Tommy. Through commissions, workshops, the DNA New Work Series, our Page To Stage Play Development program, and the Without Walls site–based theatre series, the Playhouse has become renowned for providing unparalleled resources for artists to create new work in a safe and supportive environment. In order to continue providing this creative atmosphere, we rely on the generosity of our donors and subscribers. Through their support and efforts, the Playhouse will remain a vital theatrical launching pad that can fully serve as a home for the innovative theatre artists of today and tomorrow, ensuring that ours will be the place to see what’s next in the American Theatre.

The First Year
LOOKING BACK ON 12 MONTHS OF THE ARTS BY BOB MOREY
’ve been with Fine Magazine for just over a year now. When I started here, I mentioned that although we had an Arts & Society section, there was no real coverage of the Arts. “Put it together,” the publishers said. I started calling around the county asking some of our Performing Arts companies what they would like to see from us here at Fine Magazine. I received the most feedback from Steven Baker at the San Diego Symphony and Dave Henson at the Old Globe Theatre; without them, this page would never have happened. This column started out as simple event notices of some of the larger productions playing around town or the shows I’d like to see and was titled simply, “Performing Arts.” Over the next several

months, we were able to secure interviews with some of the leading artistic talents our city has to offer and now we have those interviews scheduled months in advance. As this section grew, the event notices moved from this page to our expanded calendar section. Through all this, we started receiving emails and letters from some of you thanking us for bring this new section to you and for making you aware of some of the shows around town. Because of those letters and emails, we started sharing tickets to these shows with you in our weekly “Ticket Tuesday” promotion (see our website for details). I’d like to personally thank those of you that wrote us for your kind and encouraging words. When we moved the event notices to our expanded calendar section it opened the door for this column to morph into an op–ed page. The range of topics to choose from in any given month has become the challenge that I struggle with right up to deadline. What this column has personally given me is not just the pleasure I get from being so lucky to write it, but being invited to see more performances across the county than I had in the last five years. Last October, when we had the “How Many Can You See” Challenge, I made it to 11 shows that month alone! In the last year, I have discovered I love opera, ballet and the symphony just as much as I love the theatre. I have been able to tell you about the world–class artists that have performed here, about the shows our performing arts companies grow and send out, the education opportunities for your children and the charitable giving our non–profit art groups offer our communities. Thank you all for the most wonderful year. We look forward to continuing to find the very best our city has to offer to share with you. We are always looking for new venues to cover, so if you have any suggestions, please feel free to drop us a note. And don’t forget to give us a like and follow on Facebook and Twitter to get the latest this page—and our many others—have to offer.
