n an age where hard work is undervalued and life carries itself a little too easily for many of us, there is a fear that we are losing sight of the American dream. Our forefathers worked hard and pursued their dreams, eventually making it to the top of a daunting ladder; they could go home at night, proud of a job well done. But today, ideas like the American dream are falling victim to mediocre careers and an overarching acceptance of stagnancy. But there are a special breed of modern Americans who hold fast to those traditions; who seek a better life for themselves and, in doing so, uphold those favored visions of the American dream. O’Gara Coach La Jolla has proved itself to be a harbinger of such visionaries. Bentley La Jolla Brand Manager Traci Wilkerson is one such iconic emissary of those dreams. CONTINUED ON PAGE 32

She confesses that her background in education may have given her the edge in exotic car sales and helped make her successful. “I can definitely work with a wide range of clientele and I have a lot of patience,” she said. “It comes naturally to me to want to help others.” Wilkerson’s talent lies in helping her clients find the perfect car for their needs. Her time as a teacher taught her the art of listening; whereas other salesman blindly connect customers to cars, Wilkerson carefully takes the time to listen and take into consideration all of her client’s thoughts and needs. And now, as Brand Manager, Wilkerson can pass these invaluable skills down to her entire team. Wilkerson uses the teaching skills she acquired during her career as an educator in managing her new team. “I’m constantly making sure that everyone on my team has the tools needed to be a successful salesperson. Bentley is a wonderful family company, rich with tradition and attention to detail, and anyone associated with Bentley needs to be educated and resourceful,” she said. “I will be instructing training clinics at the dealership for our salespeople and product clinics for our clients, which is something that may not have been a huge focus here before O’Gara Coach took ownership.” But Wilkerson’s teaching skills aren’t the only reason she’s catapulted to the top of the field in just six short years. She largely attributes her success to her hard work and dedication to the job. “At my first dealership, I did everything for the owner. I was the porter, the secretary, the salesperson, the buyer, the auction goer, I wrote up the sales and purchase documents, pretty much a one man band. Although it was extreme, I can attribute most of the knowledge I have today to that job and the many roles I played,” she said. But the time and effort she invested were rewarded when she was offered a job by a Maserati dealership, where she honed her craft and was eventually scouted for the Brand Manager position at Bentley La Jolla. Wilkerson has already proven to be the perfect pick for the tricky and challenging position, where she and her team have risen to meet even the most unique challenges. For example, the unveiling of the new Bentley Bentayga SUV model. “We were given the green light to give an exclusive sneak preview of the prototype in San Diego, but this meant only 10 days to plan the huge event.” Wilkerson and her marketing assistant met the challenge head on with unmatched grace and success. With only days to prepare, they put together a lavish event that made O’Gara Coach La Jolla proud and distinguished them in a field of lofty competitors. “Guests walked along the red carpet and were photographed by paparazzi, then men were pinned with Bentley wings and the
32

women were given Swarovski bracelets. In the foyer they were greeted by an aerialist who poured them a glass of champagne… while suspended from the rafters upside–down! It was so awesome.” It’s appropriate that this acrobat was such a delight to the visitors of the Bentayga unveiling, as Wilkerson had to pull some acrobatic maneuvers of her own to plan the event on such short notice. “I was very proud,” she said after receiving a thumbs up from the owner of the dealership. “I was very thankful that he and my staff were pleased with how well it went. It was my first upscale event and it went splendidly.” Wilkerson’s schedule is jam–packed, but she’s always sure to make time for her nonprofit Traci’s Paws. “Ever since I was a child, I’ve needed to help others, people and animals,” she said. “I started Traci’s Paws in April of 2013 just as a Facebook page, then decided to make it into something greater.” Traci’s Paws hosts Pet Rest Booths at multiple charity events, like AIDS Walk San Diego and Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and they sponsor pet food and bedding drives, proceeds from which they divide and deliver to other rescues. “We also secure booths or spaces at events and invite various rescue groups to bring their animals for adoption,” Wilkerson said. And these adoption spaces aren’t just limited to dogs. “We also work with rescues for small animals, cats, reptiles, birds—any rescue needing our assistance. We will have microchipping before the end of the year.” Her passion for giving back is certainly multi–faceted; in addition to Traci’s Paws, Wilkerson also devotes herself as a member of the Bentley Philanthropy committee. She’s devoted herself to the AIDS Walk for nine years, Walk to End Alzheimer’s for nine years, (Traci’s Paws has hosted the Pet Hospitality Booth for the last three years at both walks), Susan G. Komen, Movember, MS Walk, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, as an Ambassador for Diva Dash supporting multiple women–related charities including YWCA & Girls on the Run for four years, as an Ambassador for Dining Out For Life for four years and on the Young Professional’s Council as an LGBT Ally for two years. Wilkerson’s zest for her community is indicative of the type of successful, driven Brand Manager O’Gara Coach La Jolla builds and trusts. Wilkerson embarked on a new journey six years ago and, by taking a chance and believing in herself, she found her true calling and epitomized the modern definition of success. Today, she’s proven to be one of the most talented assets to the auto sales business and a genuine leader. Wilkerson has proven that the American dream is alive and well, right here in San Diego at Bentley La Jolla. Known world–wide as a luxurious and exclusive brand, Bentley is also attainable. To inquire on purchasing or leasing a Bentley, contact Traci Wilkerson at (866) 941–1968 or visit her at Bentley La Jolla, 7440 La Jolla Blvd. La Jolla, CA 92037.

magine being able to fly over New York City like Superman, using your arms to guide over the tallest buildings or dive down to street level with the simple tilt of your head. Or perhaps it’s Mt. Everest that you’re scaling, with every step of your feet taking you closer to the summit. Or maybe you’d prefer to pilot a spacecraft to Mars, or do precise surgery on a beating heart. And you are doing it all from the comfort of your living room. It’s called virtual reality and in the near future endeavors like these—and many other extraordinary adventures—will be available through the use of special headsets designed to take you into a virtual world that provides a wide range of experiences to surprise and delight the senses.

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) systems are currently being developed by many of today’s top tech companies, like Microsoft, Google, Apple and Samsung, and will soon be available for all to experience in awe and wonder. Working through an app on your smart phone, these systems bring life–like color, clarity and performance to a visor or screen that you wear over your head in order to create a realistic experience that immerses the participant in an unlimited variety of experiences. Would you like to tour a potential vacation home for sale? Done. Redesign your kitchen with the latest appliances? Done. Stand in the batter’s box of a major league baseball game? Done. The possibilities are endless with this new technology. Computer–simulated life has been around for years with high–tech, 3–D games and computer animation, so it’s only natural for this technology to now be evolving into an immersive experience that takes the images away from your computer screen and laces them into your head by way of wrap–around wearables and motion sensors for your hands. Now, instead of watching the game on a screen, you are inside the game, a part of the process, with total control of where you wish to go and how you wish to experience it. Here are some of the main players in the VR world:
Samsung Electronics Gear VR Samsung has teamed up with Oculus to develop the Gear VR that is compatible with many smartphones, including the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, S6 and S6 edge, leveraging each device’s display to provide the color, clarity and performance needed for an amazing virtual reality experience. Gear VR allows people to play immersive VR games with friends, share 360 degree video experiences and even teleport themselves around the world with photos and videos. The Gear VR’s touchpad has been improved from earlier models, providing greater control while enjoying a wide range of film, gaming, 360 degree video and experiential content available for Gear VR. Available soon. $99.00.
Google Cardboard Without a doubt, Google Cardboard is the simplest virtual reality headset available because it is, literally, made of cardboard. All you do is open a virtual reality app on your smart phone and slip it into the cardboard headset. The app allows you to choose your experience, including exploring exotic parts of the world, experiencing concerts, watching 360–degree videos or playing VR games. There’s an app for just about every experience. Prices range from just a few dollars to $30.00.
Microsoft HoloLens The Microsoft HoloLens is an augmented reality system, meaning that it blends high– definition holograms into your reality and allows you to hold or move these visuals as you move your hand. This provides wearers with the ability to collaborate virtually, sharing graphics, collaborating, training and exploring through virtual hands–on interaction. The headset will be fully untethered and requires no phone, PC or wires to work and will soon be released to developers who will begin producing the HoloLens for sale to the general public. Price range estimates run from $500 to $1,500. PlayStation VR from Sony Originally named Project Morpheus, Sony’s system is due out in 2016. Sony’s Morpheus VR is a lightweight headset that uses the company’s PlayStation4 to transport the user into a virtual reality space. It features a 1080p HD resolution display, a 90–degree field of view and tracks a wearer’s motion with a PS4 camera. Pricing has yet to be announced. Those are just a few of the top new virtual reality systems that are poised to hit the market in 2016, so keep your eyes out for the release of the Next Big Thing in computer gaming and virtual living. It may be just around the corner, but will eventually take you around the world . . . and beyond.

AND ALL THAT JAZZ SCOTT BRADLEE AND POSTMODERN JUKEBOX CONQUER THE WORLD
T
BY BOB MOREY
he music industry is one of the hardest businesses to break into and work in. It’s said that if you want to work in it, “don’t quit your day job.” Breaking out and creating a name for yourself is the goal musicians strive to achieve, and for Scott Bradlee and his Postmodern Jukebox, it’s happened. When Scott was in the 3rd grade, he was tapped for the part of the piano player in a school play; at the time he only knew one song. Within a couple of years he discovered the sound of New Orleans–style jazz. Before he even knew anything about jazz, he knew it was for him. After honing his craft for a decade, he moved to New York—ready to be discovered. But the harsh reality of life soon kicked in. He found it was a city where there was not enough work to go around and Jazz musicians were treated little better than the background music they were often asked to play. In 2006, Scott made a video of 1980’s songs played in a Ragtime style and posted it to YouTube. He soon discovered the power of social media. Still looking for a way to share his passion for jazz, he was playing a gig one night and decided to stream it over the internet. While playing in front of a live crowd, he was also interacting with his online crowd and taking requests from people thousands of miles away. On the internet, Scott found the platform he was seeking. It
36
FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines
was a place where he could engage and interact with people from around the world in realtime and let them influence what he played. It was the perfect position for his improvisational style. At the same time, he was turning his live performances into social media events and gaining new fans. By taking live requests, Scott began to create mash–ups of contemporary tunes and jazz or Ragtime which became the genesis of Postmodern Jukebox. FM: What musicians were your greatest influences when you were growing up? Scott Bradlee: Rhapsody in Blue (George Gershwin) was the catalyst, but from there, I really got into the New Orleans sound— Jelly Roll Morton, in particular. I used to go to the library and borrow CDs of all those great musicians and then sit by the piano and try to pick out what they were doing. It was time consuming, but it wound up being the perfect education for the stuff that I do. When did you first conceive the idea of mashing up contemporary pop with arrangements from the 20’s through the 50’s, and from there, how long did it take to form Postmodern Jukebox? In the early days of my YouTube channel, I played occasional gigs and taught children’s music classes. I was broke and living in Queens when
ADVERTISEMENT
I decided to post the first video [on YouTube]. Only about 100 people saw it, but one of them was award–winning novelist Neil Gaiman. He tweeted about it to his millions–strong Twitter following. Within a week, more people had seen that video than had seen me play live my entire life. The covers gradually picked up steam online, and before long, I was able to focus entirely on them. It only took 7 years. How do you decide which songs to cover? Sometimes I’ll have an idea for an arrangement and then go find the musicians and vocalist(s) that I think would be a perfect fit for a song […] Other times, singers will come to me and pitch their ideas and then we’ll make it happen. What I look for is a song that is familiar to a lot of people—that way, the contrast to the original is readily apparent—done in a style that still fits the lyrics or subject matter. For instance, in the “Sweet Child O’ Mine” cover, the framework of the lyrics are similar to the framework of old blues and folk songs: verse, refrain, verse, refrain, etc. So, I brought in Miche Braden to sing it Bessie Smith-style and turned it into a New Orleans blues song about a child. Who writes the arrangements? I guide the creative process and typically write a big chunk of the arrangements, but I’m a strong believer in collaboration and incorporating ideas from other talented musicians. So it varies by arrangement. I almost always come up with the reharmonizations and horn section parts, but I like to leave enough space for others to do what they do so well. PMJ is having a breakout year with four albums released, coming off the first part of a world tour and currently making a lap around the United States. When do you find time to compose new material and hit the studio? The first part—the idea stage—takes the most time. It’s unpredictable; sometimes I get writer’s block (or cover’s block, or whatever). Writing the arrangements could take a few hours or a few days, depending on what I have in mind. The recording process always takes 2–3 hours, oddly enough. PJM is now in the top 25 channels on YouTube and climbing. Does this explosive growth surprise you? I started Postmodern Jukebox when I was living in a basement apartment, and now we have 1.5 million subscribers, all acquired through word–of–mouth sharing through fans. Although the music industry ignored us for a long time, with some even calling the project a “gimmick,” they can’t ignore us anymore, now that we’ve had sold out shows all over four continents. What can we look forward to in 2016? My goal right now is to bring the Postmodern Jukebox touring act to the entire world, so that everyone can get to experience it. The show is just so FUN—we tour with a dozen amazing musicians that really bring the arrangements to life and I’m really passionate about sharing their talents with the world. We’ve already done that with the videos, so expanding the tours is the next step. PMJ will play in California in early December with a stop at San Diego’s House Of Blues on the 9th. If you have not heard the amazing sounds of PMJ yet, you’re missing out! Check them out at postmodernjukebox.com, follow them on Facebook and watch their videos on their YouTube channel.

’TIS THE SEASON FOR HOLIDAY DÉCOR MAKE YOUR HOME MERRY THIS SEASON WITH TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS BY B I A N C A K A S AW D I S H
J
ust like that, the holidays are here. As the Christmas season truly is the most wonderful time of the year, it’s time to take part in all of the things that make this season so merry. From the twinkling lights to the verdant green of decorated trees in the windows, there’s just something about all of the magic that December brings. Your home should reflect the joy of the holidays and welcome guests with a cheerful, themed embrace. But incorporating seasonal decor into preexisting designs can be a challenge; it’s easy to lose the clean lines and luxury decor under layers of cheesy decorations. Don’t worry—you can incorporate festive looks without losing the look you love! According to Susan Spath, owner of Kern & Company/Susan Spath Interior Design in Solana Beach, “There’s a lot of ‘sparkle’ out there these days that lets you add a touch of glamour to a room, too!” Take it from the experts, Susan Spath and Cindy Cerenzie of Le Dimora Home Furniture & Décor in Rancho Santa Fe, as they teach you how to put a little sparkle into our homes this holiday season. ON WHERE TO BEGIN Spath shares that, as with all things design, it’s important to find a
44

focal point. Perhaps it’s the tree, or maybe it’s a beautiful mantle, but select the heart of the room and then work out from there. “It’s rather like getting dressed: once you have the basics for your space down, start embellishing with the accessories and jewelry that make it sparkle with your personality. Then, in the spirit of Coco Chanel, look back at it and take one thing off,” she says. ON ADDING GLITZ TO ANY THEME While it’s important to have a plan and a vision, Spath shares that it’s really a matter of time and space: how much time you want to spend and how much space you want to transform. “Beautiful holiday décor can be as subtle as filling bowls with scented pinecones next to a tree or as complicated as a room filled with accent pieces that completely transform the feel of your environment,” she says. “In either case, you can simply reinvent the use for items you already have. The holidays are a great time to bring out your best china and silver!” Cerenzie feels that good design is achieved by the perfect balance of compatible styles, color and, most importantly, proportion. It is most obvious when the balance is wrong. Selecting pieces that are the right match and size for the room is where true talent is measured—especially around the holidays, when seasonal accent pieces can make or break a room. Flameless candles and JingleNog ornaments are among the well– curated seasonal designs available at Le Dimora (above). Susan Spath believes a themed mantle (left) is the perfect focal point for holiday decor.
Locally Sourced distilled for ultimate purity Solar Rain® Zero is an excellent choice for those seeking to naturally cleanse excess hard minerals and contaminants from the body. Vapor distilling yields the purest form of water available. Just like Mother Nature makes rain, straight from a cloud.
ON WHAT TO LOOK FOR THIS HOLIDAY The beauty of design and décor, specifically for the holidays, is that it defies trends. Classic natural elements are the main component to add to a space, be it seasonal greenery or florals, which are some perennial favorites of Spath and her team. When it comes to trendy items and accent pieces, as always, it’s all about the details. “Shagreen is having a moment this year, so I love the idea of a lovely shagreen box filled with something festive, such as gilded fruit or vintage Christmas ornaments. Fresh holiday topiaries are also a great way to add a natural element to a side board or fireplace mantel,” Spath says. Cerenzie shares her color picks for this holiday season: classic red, green, gold, silver and white, which she’ll use in her own store to transform it into a winter wonderland and serve as a marketplace of ideas for guests to bring home for the holidays. “A few new items featured this year are ornaments from ‘JingleNog,’ the finest European blown glass ornaments designed by Melissa Byrne and real wax flameless candles with a 360–degree moving flame. The candles can be operated with a remote control so they can be placed
in hard to reach places,” she shares. Of course, this can all seem overwhelming, especially during such a busy season—but it doesn’t have to be. When you walk into the Winter Wonderland, Cerenzie’s team of designers will walk you through the entire decorating process. When bringing it all together, Spath believes the most important thing is that a space stands the test of time. Invest in timeless decor and it will look as beautiful and elegant in ten years as it does when you first walk into it. This holiday season, “It’s important to make sure any home décor complements your space in the best way possible. A well done holiday room presents the best, most festive version of itself,” she says. Campari Calendar, The BitterSweet Campaign
urled columns of golden locks frame the sides of a lightly bronzed, oval–shaped face; a gap between two ever–so–delicately pursed lips draw the viewer in, while violently–shaded blue and violet Ray–Bans, lined with golden wire, cover almond eyes. This is the birth of a star. This is the inception of a legend. This is Kate Hudson, and she’s about to set the world on fire in her debut as Penny Lane, the flaxen–haired hippie groupie in the Oscar–nominated, Golden Globe–winning film, Almost Famous by Cameron Crowe. No longer is Hudson considered simply the child of Hollywood royalty, Goldie Jean Hawn and Bill Hudson, but rather a force to be reckoned with—a star reborn in her own right. And, with the attendant fame of a Hollywood starlet, there of course come privileges, but more significantly, the responsibility that is creative control. Now, one may ponder the importance of creative control, or perhaps even its relevancy to the subject–in– question. After all, are not money, notoriety and rivieras the sacred gifts of the rich and famous? Yes and no. The three aforementioned privileges are indeed oft–granted, but they are inherently without substance. Society does weave notable faces into its perpetually churning fabric and companies do select those celebrities ever–so– carefully to play for their team of branded dodge–ball; but what value is any of that privilege if you remain complacent, as a puppet held up by the strings of money, fame and power? This is where Kate differs. Kate is not a dilettante–ed doll; she, in a world of complacent starlets, is alone in her control of her art and creative expression. On November 18th, Hudson wielded her powers of creative control by unveiling her partnership with Campari, Italy’s reigning iconic bittersweet red aperitif. Hudson is the muse in this year’s 17th edition of Campari’s calendar collection titled “The BitterSweet Campaign,” in which the blonde beauty takes the stage as two opposing political candidates—Bitter and Sweet—in a play on Campari’s unique and versatile bittersweet flavor profile. The liqueur campaign intentionally debuts on the heels of the upcoming presidential elections and encourages imbibers to use creative control—via unique Instagram photographs or curated Tweets—in order to take a stand, to express an opinion, and to cast their vote for their favorite flavor profile: #goBitter or #goSweet. Aware that Campari has always been a symbol of intrigue and pleasure—two results of the creative process—Kate Hudson made an active choice to endorse the brand and therefore further cultivate her ability to creatively process: For me, this project meant much more than producing a calendar; it was a creative process telling a great story. It was a fabulous campaign that challenged me to bring out two different sides of myself to ensure that the pictures told the story in a creative and beautiful way—and that is exactly what we’ve achieved. Personally I lean towards the sweeter side of things, however my

taste buds definitely love bitter! Though a play on flavor, this year’s theme asks people to take a stand for what they believe in, which to me is a very powerful message. The 2016 Calendar is a testament to how Campari stays true to itself as a brand and proves there will always be a place for the classic nature of Campari within today’s contemporary world. By challenging her limits as an artist, Kate Hudson yielded a successful “The BitterSweet Campaign” project; her artistic control is rife in her emotionally–charged facial expressions and body language. Much credit is due to Kate, as artistically challenging oneself is a dangerous process. Results will indeed be drawn, but there is no guarantee of success.. You do, however, learn something about yourself—your raw self—and this effect is evident in the success of Kate’s convincing duplicity in the Campari campaign. The campaign’s images were captured and curated by the acclaimed international fashion photographer Michelangelo di Battista, who brought the campaign to life through dramatic sets and a series of outfits that complimented the overarching creative theme. Creations by high end designers, like Vivienne Westwood, Versace, Halston, Brian Atwood and Christian Louboutin, provided an additional medium for which Kate could express her two roles. On his involvement in the 2016 Campari Calendar, Michelangelo Di Battista adds: What I loved most about working on the Campari Calendar was the flexibility this year’s theme let me have. As a photographer, this project has given me the opportunity to use my unique sense of aesthetic and well–defined style to reflect the Campari brand seamlessly. It was crucial that each image could stand alone yet also work as a part of a collection. Kate and I share a strong desire to deliver perfection. It was the perfect partnership and I think we achieved what we set out to do. For the first time in the Campari Calendar’s history, consumers are at the center of the campaign. Campari’s fans are called upon to share their opinion and to take a stand by following the campaign through the brand’s social channels and via the hashtags #goBitter and #goSweet. Campari has also created a website where consumers can engage with content to get live updates on each party’s progress, take the BitterSweet test to see which party you truly belong to and, most importantly, vote and take a stand. In essence, the Campari Calendar is an expression of creative control, not only by Kate Hudson, but also by each artist involved in the Calendar’s production—from the manicurist to the stylist to the photographer and everyone in between. The team managed to show that, as Campari CEO Bob Kunze–Concewitz Gruppo articulates, there are two sides to every story, to every person and even to every product. The coveted calendar, of which only 9,999 copies are printed, will not go on sale but will rather be shared among friends of Campari around the world.

Savor the Holiday Flavors DEANNA’S TIPS FOR A SAFE, GLUTEN

t’s time again for tender, juicy roasted turkey and sweet honey ham, mountains of buttery mashed potatoes and stuffing dripping with homemade gravy. Then comes the scrumptious apple pie a’ la mode or the ultimate pumpkin pie dolloped with whipped cream. Hmmm, why not a little of both! But wait… is any of this gluten–free? –FREE HOLIDAY
on our minds during the feasts of the holidays unless you or someone you know and love is doing the “Gluten–Free Thing.” Some do it to feel better, some do it because they have a gluten intolerance, but one in 100 does it because they are Celiac and gluten causes life–threatening effects. The great news is, yes, most any of your favorite holiday dishes can be made gluten–free and in some cases allergen free, too. No one has to go without at the holiday feast!
Those of you who have gone GF know that gluten is the protein naturally found in wheat, rye and barley. Sounds pretty basic, right? Don’t eat bread, don’t eat pasta or, yikes!, don’t drink beer—but it’s not quite that simple. There are many hidden glutens in the foods we eat; you know them as preservatives and artificial flavors or colors, usually found in processed and packaged foods. Mother Nature did not intend for gelatinous pressed meat or canned bread to be part of our daily eats. And the most important ingredient at any holiday shindig: booze. Beer is full of gluten unless it actually says “gluten–free” on the bottle, and there are some pretty tasty GF beers to choose from and serve at your party. Distilled alcoholic beverages are gluten–free because of the distillation process; however, some of the mixers may contain artificial flavors or colors, so it’s best to steer clear of those harbingers of gluten. Cultivate the habits of the purists and drink your liquor neat to honor the craft of a fine adult beverage. Wine is also naturally gluten–free and generally safe to drink, since grapes do not contain gluten. Although very rare, a vintner could introduce glutens at the end of the wine making process to enhance the color and flavor or the barrel sealing itself. There’s a lot to keep in mind when prepping for a gluten–free holiday season, but keep it simple by choosing food that is wrapped in the package it was grown in, buy fresh, eat local and get to know what you are actually eating. In the meantime, here’s a list of things that will help you get through a GF Holiday… RSVP with an Offer to Assist the Host Preparing GF & allergen–free foods can be intimidating, so offer to take on the job or send a “How to Prepare Safe Foods” check– off list, including the possibility of cross contamination.

Heels and Wheels By GQ Media Photos Courtesy of Tony Amat The 3rd Annual Heels & Wheels event took place at the elegant Lexus dealership located at the Centre in Escondido. Over one hundred guests enjoyed a glamorous night with a decadent dinner, silent and live auction and a mesmerizing fashion show. The proceeds will benefit the charity No More Silence, aiding victims of domestic violence. Event organizer and Del Mar Cigar Club CEO Loran Kelley III says it’s important to him to promote causes in need of a spotlight: “This topic has a personal connection to our family and it’s something that people don’t readily speak about. Statistics show that 1 of out of ever 4 women are involved in domestic violence cases during their lives.” Kelley says the proceeds from the event will help in the development of an app that will assist victims of domestic violence via a buddy contact system. Australia’s famous TEN Tenors will arrive in San Diego on December 4th, just in time for your holiday favorites
Musical Number From Down Under
SAM ROBERTS–SMITH OF THE TEN TENORS KNOWS ROCK’S CLASSICAL FAVORITES
Y
BY ERICA MINER
oung tenor Sam Roberts–Smith’s operatic roots originate from the land of one of opera’s greatest all–time stars, Joan Sutherland. After winning the prestigious Joan Sutherland Society Scholarship, the Australian Singing Competition and the Symphony Australia Young Vocalist Award, Sam became his country’s epresentative for the International Paris Opera Award. He walked away with 3rd Prize—and an international singing career. Since then, he has concertized in Australia, the UK and France. Now a member of Australia’s celebrated TEN Tenors, Sam has become a familiar face worldwide. The group regularly performs for sold out crowds with both classical and contemporary favorites. Their accomplishments include six platinum and gold records and collaborations with a wide variety of musical luminaries, such as Andrea Bocelli, John Travolta and Keith Urban. EM: What made you decide to join the TEN Tenors? SRS: After finishing my studies, I successfully auditioned for Australia’s national opera company and remained for 6 years. I learned and experienced a lot but never felt completely settled. At the end of that period I didn’t even know if I wanted to sing

anymore. I needed a change so I took a risk and left. The following week I was invited to Paris as a finalist in the Paris International Opera Awards and received a response from an email I had sent to The TEN Tenors—two life–changing moments. I had always known about the TEN Tenors but had never been in a position to audition. Now was my chance—I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to join Australia’s premier classical–crossover group! Do you find constant touring fun, physically exhausting or both? The other guys are great and everyone gets on really well so touring is heaps of fun. Because we spend so much time together all over the world it’s natural that strong friendships are formed. It’s like a working holiday with your mates. Constant touring can be absolutely exhausting, though! Different time zones, jet lag, airports, customs lines, cranky flight attendants and passengers, no sleep, can all be a challenge for a singer. When we find ourselves a little under the weather, it’s nice to know you have nine mates to cheer you up. How would you describe the musical chemistry between you and your group mates? Where are you all from? My first experience singing with the other guys was the sound check
the afternoon of my very first performance with the group. It was scary. We had been working such a tight schedule, there was no other time to rehearse with everyone. I had heard The TEN Tenors on their recordings but not up close, so I was unsure of how my voice would fit in. It was amazing. The other guys were so welcoming—all accomplished musicians in their own right. Musically, it could not have gone better. We all want to make the best sound and make sure the music is the highest quality. Having this professionalism not only produces a great sound, but also lets us relax and rock out when we have to. I’m from Perth but the other guys are from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane plus one New Zealander. We’re all from diverse musical backgrounds, but that’s why we’re able to perform such a varied repertoire and sing everything from “Somebody to Love” to Nessun Dorma. You sang the Australian National Anthem at the National Memorial Service for flight MH17. I was touring around Australia performing The Magic Flute when the tour manager received a call from the Prime Minister’s office asking if I would sing at the event. After some deliberation and further requests, I was released from tour. It was a huge honor for me to perform for my country, for the victims and the families left behind. I was nervous because of the strong national significance and sadness surrounding the memorial, but happy and proud to offer whatever support I could. It was extremely sad but another experience I will always remember.

What are the most fulfilling aspects of your work with the group? Since joining the TEN Tenors, I have found my joy and love for singing again, which is priceless. Learning all the music is hard; however, after putting in hours, weeks and sometimes months of work, it can be extremely rewarding once we’re up on stage. I love watching people dancing in the aisles. It’s nice to help people forget their stress and worry and escape for a while.
23rd Anniversary • 2015-2016 Season
The Nutcracker
Among your classical and pop selections, what are some of your personal favorites? Because of my background I would have to stick with the classics, Nessun Dorma, Phantom of the Opera, although since I’ve been working on my dance moves I enjoy Jersey Boys and the Michael Jackson Medley. I was tentative when I first joined and saw the rock ballads on the show list, but now I enjoy a big rock belt. It’s extremely important to be versatile as a performer if you want a long career in entertainment. With fast–moving technology and social changes it’s important never to miss an opportunity.
You can catch Sam and the rest of the TEN Tenors at the California Center for the Arts on Friday, December 4th.

What do you look forward to in 2016? 2016 is looking like a massive year. So many exciting things coming up. The TEN Tenors will tour internationally to four or five different countries along with an Australian tour and other performances. Between tours I will also perform lead roles with opera companies in Australia and potentially Asia. In addition are single night performances and other events throughout the year. Not much time for anything else. There will be some exciting updates soon. Keep an eye out for those!

WISHING YOU ALL A VERY MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS BY BOB MOREY
N
ow that it’s December and Black Friday is behind us, we can all say Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah without any reproachful glares. This is the time of the year when we feel that wonderful joyous spirit that washes over us and we wish goodwill to all. The time of year when we set our petty differences aside and treat one another with good cheer. We sing carols, and even if we sing out of key no one minds. We put a few extra dollars in the red bucket on our way out for the Salvation Army. We exchange gifts and hope we got the right present for that person. We hold ginormous feasts with our families and friends to celebrate the Birthday of Jesus. The bottom line is, we treat others—even strangers—better than we would throughout the rest of the year. And why is that? Why is there so much joy in December that we can’t hold onto over the next 11 months? The greatest gift we could give ourselves would be to bottle up this month and splash some of it on throughout the year when the going gets tough and we become forgetful of how we felt throughout the holiday season. Perhaps as the New Year begins, we forget December and settle into January and the routine grind of our daily lives, cycling through each month and the events that takes place, like in February, when we all think about romance because of Valentine’s Day. We know March is set aside for green beer on St. Patrick’s Day as we all become Irish for a day. Easter in April,

Mother’s Day in May, Father’s Day in June and so on until we reach December once again. The difference between December and the other 11 months lies in a single, special day. It’s that one day that changes the whole month and infects us with good cheer that grows day to day, starting with the 1st of the month until we reach Christmas Day. Just a week after Christmas comes New Year’s Day and all those annual resolutions. We promise ourselves that some things will change or that we are going to do something we haven’t yet done, from improving our diet to quitting smoking. But somehow, most of us let those resolutions slip away before May, if they even last that long. However, some of us do hold true to them. In our January issue of this year, I made mine. It was to introduce people to our local Performing Arts and to help those who have been in the past remember the joy of those performances. Throughout this year, I have taken or given tickets to over 60 people. I got to see firsthand the amazement on their faces as magic unfolded before them. There have been laughs and tears as those stories on stage were told. I expect next year to be no different, but I will have to find a new resolution for myself since this year’s was fulfilled. Maybe this is the year I should roll out that “quit smoking” resolution—after all, 2015’s resolution went really well! From all of us here at FINE Magazine, be joyful this month my friends, and let yourselves have a Merry Little Christmas or A Happy Hanukkah. Until next year!
