The Truest Measure of Our Impact as an Organization

Our Culture

Our culture is the texture of who we are as an organization. It is the accumulation of every individual that makes up the enterprise. Together, we are the expression of W.J. Bradley. Our imprint as a team reveals itself in every action we take and those actions ultimately make the most profound statement about our values. In the end, our greatest achievement will be what we have accomplished in light of who we were along the way.

he rest of the country may be shaking the final vestiges of winter from their frozen shoulders, but here in San Diego we’ve been soaking up that spring sunshine for some time now. Most of America has spent the past few months cooped inside their stifling houses as we basked in our glorious sunlight beneath rustling palms—and now it’s our time to turn inward. Get swept up in the shifting winds of spring and change with our Home and Design Issue! This month we’ve focused on everything home—from interior designers to Realtors to furniture—so that your space can be as welcoming as that famous California sunshine. This issue is all about inspiration for that special place we call “home.” So go ahead, settle down, indoors or out, and enjoy all the possibilities we’ve picked out for you. And don’t forget to invite us to the housewarming party!

While the segment may have been scripted, the enthusiasm shared by the pair of TV superstars is clearly genuine when they see the prototype of the new NSX, Acura’s mid–engine sports car that was originally launched in America 25 years ago. Calling it the NSX, which stood for “New Sports Experimental,” Acura clearly had a winner with a high–end, head–turning design that defined the term “supercar.” Now the Acura NSX is coming back with a stunning design that is sure to snap heads and widen smiles wherever it roars. A product of the Acura Design Studio in Torrance, the new NSX made its North American debut in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, where the press conference drew global attention and even an appearance from Seinfeld himself. With a low–to–the–road design, the new NSX features a

muscular exterior appearance that evolved from the functional desire to create what Acura calls “total airflow management.” “Air flows through the front of the vehicle to cool the power unit and brakes, exiting via hood and fender vents to provide critical front downforce,” said Ted Klaus, chief engineer of the NSX. “The airflow stays attached to the side of the body, next feeding the twin turbo V6, finally exiting the body in a way that enhances the rear downforce from the rear deck spoiler and rear diffuser. It accomplishes all of this without active aero—everything just works! Beauty that derives from underlying function is also at the core of any NSX.” That combination of a twin–turbocharged engine with not one but three electric motors delivers what Acura calls “zero delay acceleration,” creating a G–force feeling similar to an F1 sports car and a total of 550 horsepower. While the exterior design of the NSX is an attention grabber, the interior is more like the warm embrace of a dear friend. The NSX cabin is focused on functionality and driving ease, providing a human fit for the driver and passenger. Form–fitting seats and a steering

“Wild Thing” wheel that wraps the driver’s hands like a glove combine with ultra– thin support pillars to offer an unobstructed view of the road. “The interior just disappears while you engage in the tasks of enjoying the drive,” Klaus reports. “This is the interior we call the ‘human support cockpit,’ because it’s designed from the driver out, seamlessly integrating beautiful design and supercar performance. Stated simply, the interior of a supercar should improve driving performance or get out of the way!” Another NSX innovation offers the choice of four driving modes: Quiet, Sport, Sport–Plus and Track, which progressively reveal the full range of the vehicle’s capabilities. The near–silent Quiet mode uses pure electric–only power, while the Track mode provides the ultra–powerful performance of a super sports car. Pricing for the NSX has yet to be announced, but is expected to start in the mid–$150,000 range. Due to its limited production and unique hybrid propulsion, one can expect the first year NSX to gain immediate collectible status. Of course, you’ll have to get in line, because there are already two superstar celebrities battling it out for a spot ahead of you.

SAN FRANCISCO’S FAIRMONT HERITAGE PLACE EMBRACES ITS HISTORY BY M AT T H E W Z A M U D I O

he red bricks of Ghirardelli Square have always been an important feature of San Francisco’s unmistakable and iconic image. The lone chocolate factory, built in the early 1890’s, may seem out of place when compared to the technological and business progressiveness which surrounds it, but it is actually a symbol of prosperity that represents San Francisco’s entrepreneurial spirit. Since Domingo Ghirardelli’s sons purchased the block on the bay’s waterfront, the square has risen to legendary status as a result of the chocolate company’s early and ever–growing success. As it stands, Ghirardelli Square is no longer simply the business venture of an Italian family of chocolatiers, but a prominent and affluent gem in the most pivotal

city in the United States. An epicenter of commerce, tourism and breathtaking beauty such as this is the perfect destination for travelers and locals alike, which is why the prestigious Fairmont company claimed their stake in the Square’s soil. Ghirardelli Square is now home to the beautiful Fairmont Heritage Place, an exquisite private residence club that offers a stunning getaway or permanent residence to those hoping to get a taste of the San Francisco lifestyle. Its architecture, standard and vicinity to all things useful and pleasurable make this property one of the most sought after in the Bay Area’s competitive and luxurious market. The Fairmont Heritage Place in Ghirardelli square is more than just a chocolate lover’s paradise, it is a revolutionary and expressive example of contemporary urban living.

Fairmont’s Mustard Terrace offers stunning views and comfort to residents.

her unique and cohesive vision—appears to have carefully chosen each piece of furniture in a conscious attempt to avoid clashing with the building’s already perfect form. Her success in this endeavor has made for an environment that feels private, comfortable and safe without losing the novelty and nostalgia of a 115–year–old room. With amenities such as a stackable washer and dryer, Wolf four burner gas stove and oven, and even a personal shopper at residents’ disposal, it’s easy to see why the Fairmont Heritage Place is such a sought after and praised institution. To live in the heart of a major city is either one’s dream or nightmare; the Fairmont Heritage Place meets guests and residents in the middle by providing them with a home or hotel on the periphery of the great city of San Francisco, while still in the midst of its urban life and commerce. This piece of luxury real estate fits into an almost paradisiacal class, situated at the front row of every San Francisco sunset and served with an abundance of chocolate. Next time you’re headed to the fog–covered city by the bay, stop by the Fairmont Heritage Place. The Baha’i House of Worship in New Delhi, India is the most visited building in the world.

Designing History SAN DIEGO’S FARIBORZ SAHBA COMBINES ART WITH FAITH TO DESIGN A WORLD WONDER BY C E L I A TAG H D I R I

T

hroughout the ages, architects constructed remarkable buildings, combining art with science and mathematics. While creating the Baha’i House of Worship in New Delhi, India, Fariborz Sahba, an internationally– renowned architect, not only utilized his artistry and architectural knowledge but also his faith. Born in Iran to a Baha’i family, Sahba was inspired by his mother to pursue architecture. After earning his Masters Degree from the University of Tehran, Sahba designed several well–known buildings in his native country and worked with large architectural firms to design buildings such as the Iranian Embassy in China. But Sahba’s architectural excellence was solidified in 1976 when he was selected by the international governing body of the Baha’i Faith to create the Baha’i House of Worship in New Delhi, India. “I was quite excited to have been chosen, but at the same time concerned and worried about the size of the monumental challenge ahead of me,” says Sahba, a devout Baha’i who now resides in San Diego. Sahba’s daunting task was to design a House of Worship that would honor India’s cultural heritage while representing the central principle of the Baha’i Faith: the oneness and unity of all religions. “I wanted to design something similar to the Baha’i Faith; new 34

and contemporary, but at the same time familiar and respectful to the religions and cultures of the past. I wanted something to appeal to people of different religions,” he expressed. “Since the Baha’i Faith has no clergy or rituals, the temple is used solely for worship.” So how did the young architect comprise the concept of the lotus flower as the design? “I visited hundreds of temples throughout India, looking for a concept that would integrate the spiritual heritage of this sub– continent. I delved into the cultural and architectural heritage of India.” During his search, Sahba discovered the significance of the lotus flower to India and its people. From Buddhism to Christianity to Islam, the lotus is a unifying symbol for the world’s great religions and ancient cultures. For centuries, the flower has been associated with worship, rejuvenation and enlightenment. Lotuses grow in swamps but blossom above the surface, unaffected by their filthy surroundings. “As I studied India’s art, culture and religions, I learned of the deep respect the lotus evoked in Indian hearts and their spiritual attachment to this sacred flower.” Once the temple’s design was approved, Sahba and his team of engineers set out to translate this flower into a building with structural reality. The building’s geometric structure was so complex

World-renowned architect, Fariborz Sahba

it took eighteen months to create production drawings. After a decade of researching, designing and building, the Baha’i House of Worship in New Delhi, India, the Lotus Temple, was completed in 1986. It is one of the seven Baha’i Houses of Worship located on every continent. With more then four million visitors every year, the Lotus Temple attracts people from various religious backgrounds and nationalities. Visitors come from near and far to silently pray, meditate and marvel at the temple’s beauty. The superstructure sits on 26 acres of elegantly landscaped gardens, surrounded by nine pools of water and threaded with walkways, stairs and bridges. It is the world’s largest poured–in– place white concrete shell structure. Externally, the building is clad with 10,000 square meters of white Pentelikon—the same marble used for The Parthenon in Athens, Greece. According to CNN, the Lotus Temple is the most visited building in the world. Furthermore, Sahba has been the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions including the prestigious IFFRA award of American Institute of Architects for “Excellence in Architecture” and the “GlobArt Academy 2000” award, which described the Lotus Temple as “the Taj Mahal of the 20th century—promoting the unity and harmony of people of all nations, religions and social strata, to an extent unsurpassed by any other architectural monument worldwide.” Today, the architect is happy to be living in San Diego, a city he describes as “heavenly.” When asked for his thoughts on San Diego architecture, he replied, “San Diego is blessed by having a masterpiece of Louis Kahn’s Salk Institute for Biological Studies. The proportion, order and peace in this building display the height of great architecture. Apart from that, I do not think the modern architecture here is worthy of such a great city.” Sahba’s professionalism and humility are rather striking, considering his illustrious career. “When designing as an architect, he says, it is crucial to be conscious and respectful of the nature, the locality and its people.” “I consider it an art to grasp the culture and lifestyle of the people for whom I design. The end result is seen by how your design communicates with the people. My life and work have taken me to many different parts of the world. Now, I am enjoying San Diego, until what comes next.”

wo men were walking through the woods when a large bear approached them. The first man dropped his backpack, dug out a pair of running shoes and began to furiously attempt to lace them up as the bear slowly approached them. The second man looked at the first, confused, and said, “What are you doing? Running shoes aren’t going to help, you can’t out–run that bear.” “I don’t need to,” said the first man, “I just need to out–run you!” As humorous as this story is, stress can be a positive force for survival, pushing us to achieve excellence in our educational, professional and recreational facets of life. Many of us would never have turned in a term paper or caught the last train without the stress of an impending deadline, but stress turns negative when it becomes unmitigated, prolonged and chronic, which quickly erodes our health and well–being, promoting disease and rapid aging. Cortisol is the stress hormone made by our adrenal glands which gives us the “fight or flight” response in a stressful situation. The problem arises when cortisol levels remain continuously elevated because of constant stress, never allowing a normalizing of levels. Your body’s physiology responds like you’re being chased by the bear, even if you’re attempting to have a relaxed dinner at home. Symptoms such as increased blood pressure, impaired cognitive function and sleep, blood sugar irregularity, increased abdominal weight gain and lowered immune response are all common with prolonged elevated cortisol levels. We don’t always have control over the stress in our lives, but we can have control over how and when it affects us. Creating an environment that helps deflect and redirect stress is vital to reset your cortisol levels. We’ve talked before about how your ability to handle stress is determined by your health status; likewise, your surrounding environment at home must become an oasis, a place of peace, joy and relaxation that can help reset and normalize your

stress hormones every day. Research shows that color affects stress perception. A recent university study found that red environments increase stress responses, while green and white environments do not. In Feng Shui colors bring different energies into the home. Consulting with a knowledgeable designer can set the stage for a soothing and healing environment. Listening to music can have a tremendously stress–reducing effect on our minds and bodies, especially slow, quiet classical music. Studies show that this type of music can have positive benefits on our physiology, reducing your pulse, lowering your blood pressure and decreasing the levels of cortisol. Invest in a sound system that can fill your home with beautiful music. If your home is your castle, your bedroom should be your sanctuary. Get rid of the TV, the computers, the gym equipment, all the clutter. The bedroom should be inviting to either rest, sleep or love, anything else is a distraction. Invest in a bed and bedding that is worthy of spending one third of your life upon. Use an air purifier to provide as much clean oxygen in the room as possible. Essential oils are another powerful addition that adds a stress–reducing and healing touch as well. Stop being chased by bears and start designing your style of living by creating a stress–free environment for health and vitality.

UDC LUXURY HOMES PROVIDE UNIQUE AND SUBTLE OPULENCE BY WESTON BROWN

38

W

hen it comes to building luxury homes in San Diego, the competition is fierce. After all, nothing says “Southern California” like a beautifully crafted home perched on the cliffs of La Jolla or nestled in the hills of Rancho Santa Fe. Our landscape draws the elite from across the country and they rely on their contractors and builders to create their own private escape, a home as picturesque as the views surrounding it. When the time comes to build your palace, there is simply no better choice than UDC Luxury Homes. The team at UDC recognizes that each home, each person living in it, and each plot of land is completely unique. Rather than build cookie cutter McMansions, UDC crafts truly custom luxury homes that will remain for generations. Each home is meticulously designed and built with the individual in mind. We sat down with Rick Schroeder and Russel Kaup, the masterminds behind UDC Luxury Homes, to gain some insight into their creative and practical process.

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

Weston Brown: What inspired you to start UDC? UDC: Coming out of the downturn in the housing market, we realized that the luxury homeowner no longer wanted to have and maintain the Mega–Mansions that became all too stereotypical during the great boom of the previous 10 years. However, this buyer still appreciated the luxury features: the 4–sided architecture and the unique designs that they have become accustomed to. But why not provide the same style and luxury in smaller square footage—hence the term “Move Down Luxury”—that we have become known for? With that we started, knowing that we would also be bringing big corporate builder processes and procedures to a small fragmented industry which would help drive down the cost of a luxury experience for all of our clients. We pride ourselves on using the best quality trades and the best prices in the industry.

UDC’s attention to detail translates to livable luxury in every aspect of their custom homes, indoors and out.

What sets a UDC custom home apart? What sets us apart from our competitors is our depth of industry experience in all aspects of the building industry. Coming from 30 years of big builder experience, we understand all the challenges of the homebuilding process, from the acquisition of the land through the customer service of the home. We have been successful at turning these skills into benefits for all of our clients. Most of our competition is usually single–sided, while here at UDC we can help you from the beginning of finding your lot, lot level financing, design and architecture, construction financing, construction and customer service. We are very flexible and invite anybody interested in building a new home to call for an appointment.

How would you describe your personal design style? We are not really pinned down by any one style as very few homes are ever truly representative of a particular style. We live by the motto that “form follows function.” It is pretty easy to get architecturally creative, but if the space doesn’t lend itself to livability, then it’s “art.” However, if you can combine form and function together, the space becomes a living environment to thrive in. Additionally, every one of our homes is designed specifically to maximize the property’s natural attributes. We never re–use architecture because in our niche no two lots or views are the same and each unique property deserves the extra attention to detail to put our stamp on it. How would you spend a typical Sunday at home? We each savor Sunday for family and downtime. While Rick would likely be found in the water in Cardiff or attending his kid’s sporting events, Russell would more likely be found supporting the Chargers and Padres or coaching youth sports. If found driving around town, we may be spotted sneaking into an open house or model complex just to walk floor plans for anything we may find interesting. What does “luxury” mean to you? Luxury is defined by the individual. It’s personal to the taste and lifestyle that each of us live by. For us, we would define luxury by the crispness of the details, rather than the mass of the structure; the uncommon feature as opposed to the overdone kitchen. Subtle luxury seems to be more striking than the obvious overemphasized features or details.

MIXING CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY Mixing different styles of furniture and decor is a perfect way to tailor a space to your liking. Using traditional furniture as a base lends an enduring design to your room, while you can regularly switch up voguish decor and accents with the change of seasons and trends. This champagne vanity and bed provide a versatile look that can work well with different color schemes and lighting fixtures, but still embodies that timeless elegance of which you’ll never tire.

ADDING TEXTURE Statement accent furniture and decor quickly and easily add texture to a room. Using hyde and furs is particularly popular right now, but for those of you looking to use this trend in a understated way, the After 8 black onyx vanity is a perfect option. This piece features a snakeskin look on its drawers, subtly adding texture to your space. While the texture is very trendy, the sleek black color and faux crystal accented handles add a timeless glamour to the piece that you can enjoy for years to come.

< USING NATURAL MATERIAL Using natural materials like wood, stone and metal in your decor or furniture is a pretty and versatile trend that can be used in any area of your home. When incorporating these natural elements into your space, there are several different routes you can take. Using stone, for example, can add a crisp and contemporary feel to your space, while adding wood can make for a classically stylish room. The Chateau Beauvais Studio bed incorporates this trend and adds a sophisticated feeling with the intricate detailing around the head and footboards. This piece also embodies the lighter wood trends which have grown in popularity in recent years.

METALLICS Using metallics in your interior design is a huge trend that will look stylish in all areas of your home. From golds to coppers to silvers, metallic accents can bring a swanky look to any room. The Bel Air Park dining set and bed are clean and crisp but still add a touch of glamour to the room. The cool shade of these pieces will also compliment Pantone’s color of the year, marsala, which is hugely popular in interior design as of late. Other trendy colors, like midnight blue and velvety forest green, will also compliment these pieces. FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

efore artists are able to create their masterpieces —whether they are chiseling it out of marble, molding it from clay or painting it onto a canvas—they must be able to see what others cannot. Before a statue emerges, a sculptor can already see it within the block of marble sitting before him. A potter sits before a shapeless lump of clay and envisions the vase it will become. A painter can look upon the blank canvas and see the portrait that will soon appear. San Diego native Dan Herbst is an artist in his own right, but with a very unique twist. Instead of working with marble or clay or paint, he works with materials discarded by others and turns them into one–of–a– kind pieces for his clients. Herbst first opened Chula Vista–based San Diego Urban Timber in 2009, combining a love of working with wood and a unique idea that embodies the adage “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” The wood Herbst uses for his custom–made furniture is 100 percent repurposed wood, gathered entirely from discarded materials that other companies have deemed unusable for their purposes. “All of the wood we get is basically considered trash,” says Herbst. “Sometimes we’ll be pulling old wood boards from a discard pile at the fence company […] and it’s kind of ironic: the wood that comes out of the old fences is so much better than the new wood that they’re going to put up in the new fences. It’s awesome stuff; it’s stuff you can’t find anymore.” Herbst first began working with repurposed wood while helping his uncle, a demolition contractor, remodel his house using reclaimed fir from some of his job sites. After that, he says, “I was just driving down the road and seeing trees get cut down, wondering what was gonna happen to them.” After some research, he discovered the majority of the trees that get cut down in San Diego are used for mulch or firewood. After acquiring some of this wood and borrowing a chainsaw from an artist friend of his, his fate was set. He says, “As soon as I cut the first piece open, I was like, ‘Oh man, I gotta do this more.’” San Diego Urban Timber is now entering its sixth year of business and has expanded from its small beginnings to a nearly 2,200 square–foot fully– equipped shop with solar and dehumidification kilns, as well as all the necessary tools and equipment to do

their own welding and metalwork. Herbst and his two–person team deal solely in San Diego wood; while they initially went out and sought their materials, Herbst says, lately the wood has started coming to them. “We’ve been talking to Balboa Park,” he says, “and also with Chula Vista to get more access to the trees that are coming out when new developments go in.” Urban Timber’s projects vary from custom orders for residential homes, to bulk orders for restaurants and breweries, to playgrounds for schools. No matter the project, Herbst is determined to bring out the wood’s hidden beauty and display it for his client. “One of the things we strive to do is to be able to use wood for what we think it should be used for,” he says. “Instead of cutting out defects, we try to celebrate them and feature them.” “What began as a simple thought while driving down a road one day evolved into a thriving business, a “real labor of love,” for Herbst.” His enthusiasm and passion for his work is evident not only in his finished products, but the way he talks about it with people. “There’s a lot of fun stuff and there’s a lot of nitty-gritty details,” he says. “But it’s all pretty much fun to me.”

Real Estate Attorney/Broker

As a 16 year veteran real estate attorney and broker, Maria Rosino– Miracco established Premia Realty Group to add an additional level of service that most of the traditional real estate brokerages don’t offer. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Maria offers the unique perspective of a native Californian, but as a first–generation Italian American she also brings to the table a worldly aspect. Although not common here in California, there are other states and countries where attorneys are instrumental in real estate transactions. Consulting a REALTOR® who is also an attorney is essential because there are many pitfalls that may arise even in the most typical real estate transactions. Maria was inspired to become a REALTOR® after practicing as a real estate attorney and saw how complex real estate transactions had become. She decided to become a broker in order to help both sellers and buyers in having a positive experience when dealing with one of the most overwhelming transactions in a person’s lifetime due to the number of laws and regulations involved. There simply is no comparison to what the combination of a real estate attorney and REALTOR® brings to the table. If you are selling a luxury home, Maria customizes a marketing package for you in order to attract the greatest pool of buyers both domestically and internationally and to ensure that the property is showcased in the light consistent with the beauty and distinction of the home itself. On the buying side, Maria will listen to your needs and employ her extensive market knowledge to scout out the right home and put together a deal that uniquely positions your chances to get your offer accepted. When Maria’s not devoting herself to her clients, she loves to spend time with her husband of 13 years, Luke, and their three daughters, Sofia, Michela and Julianna. Maria’s biggest inspirations in life are her children. They have taught her that no matter what curve-balls life throws your way there is always a way to make life better. According to Maria, having and raising children is one of the most rewarding,

beautiful and amazing accomplishments that you can achieve in your lifetime. She has been blessed to have the hearts of angels around her each and every day that enlighten, empower, encourage and inspire her to achieve a better life.

t the heart of every beautiful residence lies beautiful design–and expert investment. When two new luxury apartment complexes, The Dylan and The Huxley, opened in West Hollywood in 2014, locals were left wondering who was behind the masterpieces of modern design. With the housing market back on the rise and new apartment complexes as common as beaches in LA, it took a lot to impress the public, but The Dylan and The Huxley did just that; when investigated, Los Angelenos and admirers across the country found Monarch Group (in partnership with Essex Property Trust) at the heart of those newly designed digs. Monarch Group is a private real estate investment and development firm located in our own La Jolla, California. With a history stretching back to 1997, Monarch’s nine-person Executive Team combines decades of hands-on real estate entitlement, development, direct property investment, and property management experience. The team works together to create beautiful, livable residences that push the boundaries of design but maintain a level of modest comfort in the center of SoCal’s most desirable neighborhoods. Monarch Group’s track record includes more than $1 billion in entitlement, development and direct property investment encompassing over 17,500 residential units in the western United States—including more than 11,000 residential units in over 50 projects in the San Diego region alone. Locally, you can spot the Monarch touch in high-quality and award-winning market-rate and

affordable apartments, condominiums, and single-family homes located in a diverse range of communities. Recently, for example, Monarch acquired a prime piece of Point Loma real estate where they’re building one of their signature luxury apartment complexes that will feature plenty of resident amenities, including a fitness center, dog park, BBQ areas, outdoor fireplaces, and of course, a resort-style swimming pool surrounded by private cabanas. The project’s Irving Gill-inspired design and architecture will combine luxury living with coastal living. One need only look at The Dylan and The Huxley in West Hollywood to see why Monarch Group is earning nothing but praise as of late. In partnership with Essex Property Trust, Monarch Group created a completely unique and timeless set of residences in West Hollywood. Both projects feature private movie theaters, plenty of patio and outdoors spaces and the sleek, modern architecture you’d hope to find in the chic urban environment. Both projects received prestigious NAHB Nationals (one Silver, one Gold) Awards in 2015 for “Best Architectural Design of an Attached Community-Urban,” proving that they’re not just easy on the eyes, but genuinely innovative, too. Both also feature distinctive public art installations by award-winning artist Gaston Nogues. Though Monarch Group’s most recent accolades come from projects a little farther north, we in San Diego still have a lot to be excited about. Monarch Group’s reach is only expanding and their expertise growing. As they set their sights a little closer to home, San Diegans can expect to see some very exciting projects from Monarch Group in the future.

FineDesign The Best in Interior Design By Emily Glaser

Y

our home is your sanctuary. When you get home at the end of the day and kick off your shoes, you want to burry your toes in lush carpets. As you shed your suit and relax, your body should naturally fall into the plush curves of your sofa, a silken throw at hand. When it comes time to prepare dinner, maneuvering through the corners of your kitchen should be effortless, stainless steel glistening in the steam of your pots and pans. And when you dim the lights and pull back the covers, all you want is to dive into the most luxurious and downy bed in existence. You deserve all of those things and more– but how do you make your fantasies into a reality? Your perfect home can exist, but creating it is not as easy as popping into your local Ikea. Coordinating fabrics with color schemes, lighting with appliances, flooring with wall coverings– all of these things require an expert; and not just one expert, a team of experts who can design, choose, and arrange all those elements into a coherent, functional and beautiful atmosphere that you will cherish for years to come. There are two paths you can take when it comes to the interior design of your home. If you want a completely hands–and–stress–free experience, you should hire a top–quality interior designer who will handle the process from start to finish. But if you want a little more input, or if you enjoy the shopping process, you need to find the best furniture retailer to cater to your needs. Here, we introduce you to one of each and show you why, and how, they make your interior design project, big or small, simple and fun.

IRONSIDE FISH AND OYSTER CAPTURES SAN DIEGO’S SEAFARING HERITAGE WRITTEN & FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY BY M A R I A D E S I D E R ATA M O N TA N A

amed after the previous tenant of the 1920’s–era warehouse, Ironside Metal Supply, Ironside Fish and Oyster is the most recent restaurant innovation of executive chef and partner Jason McLeod. Little Italy, which is historically a fishing village, didn’t have a single oyster bar or seafood joint amongst its dozens of restaurants. McLeod noted the missing link and decided to make a change. He created a menu chock–full of local seafood, including lobster rolls, clam chowder and a raw bar with up to

eight oyster varieties. “San Diego is a known seaport city born from a local fishing industry that was once famous as the tuna capital of America,” says McLeod. “My goal at Ironside has been to reintroduce an oyster culture and approachable raw bar concept to the city’s dining scene.” The building and interior boast meticulously crafted design details and the bar menu showcases over fifty unique craft and fortified cocktails, making Ironside the preeminent dining destination in San Diego. All of the seafood at Ironside is as sustainable as possible. McLeod works closely with local fisherman in San Diego and Santa Monica CONTINUED ON PAGE 68

Seafood to follow the Monterey Aquarium Safe List. Diners often stop at the live lobster tank, housing crustaceans from the coasts of Baja, Maine and beyond. Also available is live sea urchin from Baja and the San Diego coast. McLeod works directly with local suppliers such as Suzie’s Farms and Mary’s Chicken for access to the freshest ingredients. “We believe it’s our duty to do the best we can to support local purveyors and farmers and feel that we do a great job of providing our guests with as much local produce in our dishes as possible.” Ironside recently debuted their exclusive “Ironside Select,” a custom oyster that was created from seed to delicious briny bivalve with Minterbrook Oyster Company out of the Puget Sound in Washington State. Ironside Selects are hand–farmed throughout the harvesting process. The oysters are then sorted, graded and placed in special trays. These trays are placed back in the salt water for a period of time, which minimizes the time out of the water prior to shipment and regenerates chips in the shells. This careful process helps to ensure that the oysters will arrive fresh and strong. The distinctive flavor profile of this special oyster is mild and sweet, with a smooth finish and a touch of brine. Born and raised along the seafood–abundant coastline of British Columbia, a mere ninety minutes south of Fanny Bay, McLeod was spoiled at a young age with plenty of local catch. But his favorite, undoubtedly, was the oyster: always unadorned, the most authentic taste of the sea. With over twenty–five years of culinary experience under his toque, Jason has traveled the world to train with several of the most prestigious chefs in the industry, including culinary icons Raymond Blanc and Marco Pierre White. While Ironside is Chef McLeod’s first venture as an owner, it certainly was not his first foray into developing a concept focused largely on seafood. In 2009, as the opening executive chef of RIA in Chicago’s 5–Star Elysian Hotel, McLeod led a luxurious seafood–driven restaurant from being relatively unknown to receiving two Michelin stars during its first year of operation—an honor that only two other restaurants in Chicago (Charlie Trotter’s and Avenues) were awarded that year. McLeod says he’s aiming for an approachable take on seasonal seafood, from whole golden–spotted bass to scallop ceviche with fresh citrus, pickled tomatoes, avocados and olives. Alongside a healthy selection of raw bar items, including oysters, clams, uni, abalone and crab claws, the menu offers a varied choice of soups, salads and sandwiches. Guests can opt for anything from shrimp and pork bahn mi to lobster sliders, fish and chips to beer–braised mussels. A daily catch of mahi mahi, snapper, yellowtail bass and swordfish is offered grilled or cooked a la plancha. Aside from oysters, McLeod says his favorite dish is any whole fish offering that’s on the menu, served grilled. The biggest showstopper of the restaurant is the oyster happy hour offering a selection of $1 oysters from the raw bar Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. On Friday and Saturday nights, the raw bar stays open (alongside the cocktail bar) with bivalves, oyster flights, crudos and crab claws on offer until 2:00 a.m.

Top to bottom: Whole Roasted Sheepshead with Shellfish Paella, Chorizo and Saffron Aioli; Spinach and Marinated Mushroom Salad with Bacon, Egg and Feta; Lobster Roll with Brown Butter Mayo, Crispy Shallots and Chives.

Candied Lemon & Ginger Slices RECIPE & PHOTO BY M A R I A D E S I D E R ATA M O N TA N A

I have an organic lemon tree in my backyard that yields more lemons than I know what to do with, pushing me to be creative with my recipes every citrus season. This recipe adds a hint of ginger for a subtle yet spicy kick; add more sugar if you like them extra sweet. I also like to dry the lemons a bit in the oven for a slightly chewy texture. INGREDIENTS 1 cup water ½ cup granulated sugar (more if desired) 2 teaspoons grated ginger root 3–4 lemons, cut into thin slices Powdered sugar, for garnish

The Blair Beer Project

SCOT BLAIR CONTINUES TO IMPROVE SAN DIEGO’S BEER SCENE WITH SOUTH PARK BREWING CO. B Y E M I LY G L A S E R

here is no person in this city more qualified to do something in the community of South Park in regards to beer than me,” says Scot Blair, who takes casual ownership of this type of grandiose claim, delivering the phrase with humility. Blair is the bearded, beer–brewing, loquacious genius behind San Diego’s beer havens, including world–renowned Hamilton’s, Small Bar, Monkey Paw and, most recently, South Park Brewing Company. Blair has repeatedly managed to create that fabled drinking hole environ where people of all classes, genders and ages can forget their differences in favor of their shared passion: beer—and good food to pair with it. Blair’s latest endeavor is a subspecies SPBC tap selection of his other ventures, the more family– includes their own brews as well as Blair’s favorites. friendly and food–centric cousin. “This OPPOSITE: Scot Blair has revolutionized San Diego’s is the most exciting thing I’ve done since already bubbling beer scene; Hamilton’s,” Blair proclaims as we sit in the SPBC’s community tables quickly fill with great beer, hallowed hall of his inaugural and favored food and conversation. Tavern. “I really haven’t seen a brewpub like this, especially in Southern California. We’re doing casual fish and beer–which a lot of the times people don’t that defines South Park Brewing Company. When he finally got think beer and fish go well together. It’s really taking that brewpub the go–ahead to renovate the space beside Hamilton’s, Blair and model and doing something different in this great community.” his team painstakingly worked to restore the space to its original The new South Park Brewing Company abuts Blair’s Hamilton’s brilliance in an effort toward “architectural revitalization.” “We and represents a project that has, in fact, been in the works for returned the storefront to the way it looked in the ‘50s. Classic years. As Blair pursued other endeavors (including boutique South Park.” Blair’s attention to authentic aesthetics extend far brewery Monkey Paw), the idea of South Park Brewing Company beyond the structure itself; the vintage butcher’s case that now continued to occupy his thoughts: “I didn’t know if it was going to houses SPBC’s fresh fish was salvaged from the scrap–heap after the be well–received and, to be honest with you, I was kind of done Linkery’s closing in 2013. made, specially–designed, hand–crafted; no architect or general designer made this space a reality, only the visions of Blair and his team, especially Pat Wilkening of Red Craft Custom Design, making South Park Brewing Company as authentically real of a space as possible. SPBC’s beer and food hinge on that definitive allegiance to honesty, even defined in its slogan: “Honest Fish. Thoughtfully Crafted Beer.” Sourced from local, esteemed Catalina Offshore Products, the menu is solely seafood. The foundation of the menu is a simplified system: Pick Your Fish (with choices ranging from yellowtail to opah to bay scallops); Pick Your Flavor (lots of buttery and savory options to choose from); and Pick Your Preparation (tacos, sandwiches, salads and bowls are all available). But if you’re feeling indecisive, they’ve provided plenty of dishes to satisfy every palate, from fish and chips to a house smoked fish dip (pair it with the oyster stout, a combination that is, in the word’s of Blair, “money”). As with his other projects, Blair’s passion for brewing lies at the heart of SPBC. 4 of the 13 beers on tap are South Park Brewing Company’s own, invested with the signature touch of head brewer Cosimo Sorrentino. Each glass of house beer is earnestly and thoughtfully brewed, while the other beers in the line–up are chosen by none other than Blair himself. Once again, in a nod to honesty and authenticity, all operations of South Park Brewing Company are visible, from the innards of its kitchen to its brewing system. Blair constantly reiterates that his newest venture is nothing if not organic. In a world where authenticity is often eclipsed by the thirst for profit, Blair continues to stick to his proverbial guns. “This industry’s changing, there’s a lot more […] hotel owners and real estate moguls who are trying to get into my industry. But they don’t know, they don’t have any skills in this industry, other than they love to make money.” With a vision harkening back to a bygone era when pride in one’s work was the definition of success, Blair continues, “The end–all, be–all is ‘What’s my footprint when I’m dead?’ Did I make an impact in my industry? Did I make a difference?” The answer to Blair’s self–imposed question, from the community of South Park, San Diego, and his fans across the country, is a resounding “yes.”

P E R F O R M I N G A R T S City Ballet’s season finale, Don Quixote, will wow audiences.

Our City of Ballet CITY BALLET OF SAN DIEGO CONTINUES TO SHINE BY ERICA MINER

hen City Ballet of San Diego Directors Steven and Elizabeth Wistrich watched their astonishingly talented troupe of young dancers launch into their “Balanchine Spectacular” presentation the weekend of March 6th at the Spreckels Theatre in downtown San Diego, they might have visualized their own humble beginnings and rise to the heights of the competitive and demanding world of ballet. The two met while they were dancing with the Boston Ballet Company for its legendary director Virginia Williams. Before long the couple married and soon afterward left for the unforgiving atmosphere of New York City, initially just to take classes. When Steven was offered a job with Netherlands Dance Theatre, he and Elizabeth both flew to Holland together. Eventually Elizabeth also found her niche working with the company. From there they went on to dance with other companies: first Oslo, Norway, and from there, to the Stuttgart Ballet. But they weren’t always allowed the luxury of working in the same location. They have experienced long periods of being apart because of their work, at times even requiring that they live in different countries. Elizabeth was made soloist in Stuttgart, Germany, at about the same time Steven was offered a principal contract in

80

Geneva, Switzerland, to work with celebrated choreographer George Balanchine in a satellite company for the New York City Ballet. No dancer would have turned down an offer to work with that ballet icon, but it meant the couple would have to endure an entire year apart. “We spent all those months commuting back and forth on the train to see each other’s performances,” he says, laughing. But they survived the difficulties of their long–distance relationship and have now been together for 47 years. That truly is a testament to the power of their common loves: dance and each other. The couple founded City Ballet of San Diego together from scratch. When they first opened their ballet school in 1992, they were gratified to attract an exceedingly high level of students in the advanced levels, practically from day one. However, that achievement prompted the realization that they would need to find performance opportunities for these talented dancers. “Performing on stage is an extremely important aspect of young dancers’ training,” says Wistrich. He and Elizabeth applied for non–profit status, and when they took a look around San Diego to see what kind of companies were in existence, they were quite amazed that no world–class dance company was present here. They decided then and there that their goal over time would be to establish a topnotch ballet troupe. “That’s what we had in mind since the beginning,” he says. “It’s been a very arduous up and down kind of journey.”

Wistrich agrees that starting from scratch was tough. “I remember how difficult it was,” he says. “Virginia Williams was inspiring to me because she did the same thing in Boston. I was one of the founding members of the Boston Ballet, and was there when she started.” When the going was especially rough, he would call Williams, who admitted even she had difficulty raising money for her company and wasn’t even sure it would survive beyond the present season. It was as stressful for her as it was for him and Elizabeth, but he adds that Boston Ballet is now one of the top five companies in the US. “She had fabulous dancers,” Wistrich says. “Due to her great training, they all went on to have great careers. Balanchine was very close to her and gave her a lot of his ballets.” He kept plugging away, recalling the things Williams went through as he was starting his own company. He knew from the beginning it wasn’t going to be easy. “Keeping the company growing and moving forward, developing it to where it’s gotten now, has been a very challenging journey,” he says. When it comes to choreography, however, he leaves that task to Elizabeth. “She’s a wonderful choreographer, very versatile,” he says, and proudly declares that by now she likely has choreographed as much as two hundred ballets. “She does everything. Story ballets, dramatic and contemporary ballets. She has an amazing talent.” Given the quality of the performances and the dancers’ joy in fulfilling their passion for ballet, the dancers clearly love working with Elizabeth as a choreographer, as well as with Steven, who runs the company as an artistically tight ship with a dynamic and caring atmosphere. Recreating the exquisite ballets of the incomparable George Balanchine adds a luscious layer of frosting to their many–layered cake. Tickets for performances of City Ballet of San Diego’s season finale, the full-length Don Quixote, can be ordered at: cityballet.org/index.php.

An Amazing Journey FOSTERING A LOVE FOR THE ARTS IN OUR CHILDREN BY BOB MOREY

an Diego has been blessed to become a destination for world–class touring productions and guest artists from across the globe. Simultaneously, our city has established its reputation for developing that same world–class caliber of productions and artists that we then send out for others to discover and enjoy. Last year I wrote about how our performing arts community has filled many of the holes in our public education system which opened as our music and arts programs were slashed to near–extinction. Summer is coming and across the county there will be outreach programs for your children to participate in which might encourage them to consider making the arts their career– an experience I understand firsthand. Some of you proudly hold the title of soccer mom or dad; I ask you to consider adding another title: theatre, dance or music mom/ dad. Studies have proven that when the arts are added to a child’s education curriculum, it enhances their other areas of study and grades rise across the board. No matter what part of the county you live in there is a program or school that caters to the interests of your child. It’s not just enrolling them in a program; you need to take them out to experience it live for themselves. You want your child to see something that leaves them saying, “That’s what I want to do when I grow up.” I know some of you are dreading the prospect of the endless hours of practice: that your child will want to become a drummer,

82

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

that you will loose your garage to their drum set, that they might form a band that will practice there, that your neighbors will call and complain about the noise, and all those years it will take for them to sound good. It’s like that with any craft; if it wasn’t, we would all be award–winning artists. As my daughter was growing up, she wanted to be many different things before settling on the track she is on now. When she started writing short stories a few years ago, she had problems stringing words together to convey what she was trying to say. Eventually, she started posting those stories online and shared them in the writer’s groups she joined. Like me, she does not always like the feedback she gets, but she kept writing, learning the process of the craft. Now, three years later, her stories have become longer, more complex and richly layered. Yes, there were a lot of red edit marks to wade through in the beginning, but even those marks helped develop her style of writing. I earned three gifts from her development: one, I didn’t lose my garage; secondly, I got to watch her grow as a writer and becoming very talented; and, thirdly, I now believe she has found her career and that she will be able to make a living as a writer. I’m very proud of what she has achieved and to have witnessed her journey. This is the commitment it takes to be the parent of a child that wants to enter the arts—and the gift that comes from such a commitment. World–class talent very rarely just happens, it has to be fostered, developed and encouraged. Artists receive more rejection than praise and it’s never easy. But if this is the direction your child is leaning toward, take a look around your neighborhood and see where you might start an amazing journey of your own.
