PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Thanks + Giving Dear Readers, W ith cooler temps along the coast and in the valleys, we welcome the arrival of autumn in Souther n Califor nia; from the much anticipated arrival of America’s Cup in the San Diego Bay and the Fall Apple Harvest in Julian, to exploring the wineries and vineyard of Temecula’s south coast terroir. In celebrating a season of giving, we unveil this month Leonard Simpson’s “10 Best Dressed in San Diego.” Ten female and ten male honorees are chosen annually based solely on their contributions and support of local charitable organizations. As an open letter to those nominated, as well as countless others for your efforts, here’s to you: We congratulate and applaud your spirit of generosity and giving; your efforts and community involvement are much appreciated, and we celebrate your commitment to making a difference. W illiam Wordsworth, an English poet, once said, “That best portion of a good man’s life; his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love” – and we couldn’t agree more. We salute your kindness and your compassion, but most of all, we thank you for your continued dedication in making San Diego ‘American’s FINEST City.’ Leonard Simpson’s 10 Best Dressed is featured on page 41. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’d like to personally thank our readers and partners for your continual support. I am continually humbled and inspired by the support of our audience in whatever format you choose to enjoy FINE Magazine; and as always, welcome your feedback. From our family to yours, have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Enjoy! John Winfield Publisher, FINE Magazine Comments or suggestions? Contact us at info@finesd.com

MANGO A FASHION EMPIRE

By Joyce “JLynn” Gonzalez All photography courtesy of MANGO

“Our objective is to dress the urban and modern woman/man and also meet her/his daily needs,” notes Cristina Salvado of MANGO. “This is the formula which we have analyzed, adapted, and applied to each country we operate in; and, it is one of the keys to our commercial success and international prestige.”

O

riginating in Barcelona, MANGO is not just a tropical fruit to indulge one’s tastes; it has become a manufacturing powerhouse and multi-international clothing brand focusing on women’s and men’s apparel and accessories – with a clear intention to dominate and become a fashion empire. By satisfying the fashion appetites of European markets since 1984, this innovative fashion mogul lends its continued success with the vision of establishing a fashion presence in every major city around the world. Despite the downturn of the economy, MANGO continues to expand, possessing a total of 2,060 stores in over 104 countries worldwide; this can be attributed to being one of the leading pioneers of developing a major brand and manufacturing company, utilizing technology as a means of reaching consumers on a global scale – having established its first online store in 2000.

20

LIFESTYLE | LUXURY | LIVING

F I N E sd. c o m

FASHION This expansion continues with the recent openings of numerous stores in cities abroad such as Tokyo, Beijing, Erlangen, Verona, and even Iraq within the last couple of years; the brand also launched their fall 2011 collection to the likes of fashion destinations such as the Philippines and Paris to showcase their current trends and signature looks for the upcoming season. One of the key concepts to MANGO’s success in differentiating themselves from the competition is that they market themselves in ways that are not only efficient, but provide fast turnover with high quality of merchandise appealing to the young, urban, and hip demographic. Iconic faces that have graced the pages of MANGO’s advertising campaigns include starlets such as Scarlett Johanssen, model/actress Mila Jovovich, and supermodel Kate Moss as of recent launching the fall 2011 collection. Although MANGO

is a major fashion label within markets abroad, setting themselves as one of the leaders in European retail sales and becoming one of the second largest retail/textile exporters of Spain, the brand and label under MNG is beginning to break ground in the U.S. MANGO has opened stores in New York City and Chicago, making their way to the west coast with the establishment of a boutique in Orange County’s South Coast Plaza. Some of MANGO’s key trends to look for in their fall collection include boot-legged denim and bright-colored pants, along with cropped trousers. Staple samples within the collection offer striped sweater knits, starprint designs, tweed blazers, and sleeveless faux fur jackets. In dressing the urban young professional with affordable runway fashions, MANGO is noted to dress the needs of the contemporary modern individual, ranging from sporty-casual to chic business attire, and even evening wear. According to Cristina Salvado, of MANGO in Barcelona, the Autumn/Winter 2011 focuses on taking inspiration from the concept of an “event,” blending elements from daytime to eveningwear with influences of timeless styles of the classic French women with feminine and masculine pieces. For H.E. MANGO’s male Autumn/Winter 2011 collection, the primary focus is on traditional elements, tying in a sense of casual elegance. The garments and clothing afford clean leans with an emphasis on interior details and finishes. On a mission, MANGO continues to push forward in providing its fashion consumers a lifestyle that accommodates for their stylish needs. “Our objective is to dress the urban and modern woman/man and also meet her/his daily needs,” shared Salvado. “This is the formula which we have analyzed, adapted, and applied to each country we operate; and, it is one of the keys to our commercial success and international prestige.” u MANGO shop.mango.com

Landing in the San Diego Bay mid-November, America’s Cup will make its U.S. debut of the AC World Series – a new professional global circuit, featuring the sport’s best athletes competing on some of the most physically demanding boats in the world – the newly unveiled AC45 wing-sailed catamaran. 30

R

etur ning to San Diego after a 16-year hiatus, the America’s Cup World Series will welcome eight teams of five from around the world to

compete in the series’ third stop. The prestigious sailing competition makes its U.S. debut of the AC45 catamaran, a new look for the races that promises both speed and excitement. “We spent 16 months in San Diego preparing for the last America’s Cup, so we know that the harbor is a per fect stadium for the new-look high-speed, high-energy America’s Cup,” said James Spithill, skipper of ORACLE Racing – current defenders of the title, having won the America’s Cup in February 2010 for the U.S. “We thought it was pretty cool just sailing our wing-sailed multihull back in 2009, but this time there will be a whole fleet sailed by teams from around the world. I can promise you this: people in San Diego will have a new appreciation for America’s Cup sailing.” Numerous water front viewing locations afford spectators and race enthusiasts the opportunity to witness the on-the-water action up close. PLASTIC Surgery Unwanted features and appearances can make you feel self-conscious, unconfident and unhappy. That’s what plastic surgery is all about, not vain narcissistic people. It’s about ordinary people in need of a little refining. “the inside is the most important, but the outside can affect how you feel about yourself as well.”

Be realistic about the effects. Plastic surgery cannot save a bad marriage, turn you into a movie star, or make an unhappy life a happy one. However, there is a lot plastic surgery can do – it can improve your looks, it can help you look as young as you feel, and it can boost your selfesteem and self confidence. Be realistic about results. Plastic surgery gives improvement–not perfection. If improvement is your goal, chances are you will be pleased with your result. Choose a qualified surgeon you feel comfortable with. Choose someone who is easy to talk to, friendly, and professional. If your doctor doesn’t listen, he/

she won’t hear and the chances of achieving your desired result diminish. Choose someone who listens closely to what you want and cares about what you need. Today, all kinds of doctors perform plastic surgery. W ith a general medical degree, a doctor can practice any specialty regardless of whether they have had any advanced training.

T

here are things you can do to maximize your chances for a good result. Have the right motivation, realistic expectations, and a good surgeon. Be informed and do it for yourself – not for your spouse, your kids, your friends, or anyone else.

tic Surgery oversees the field of plastic surgery and reviews training for eligibility and certification. Choose wisely. Be sure the surgery center where your procedure will be performed

is a certified facility. AAAASF is the leader in ambulatory surgery center accreditation and it holds its facilities to a rigorous standard. While many aesthetic procedures are performed safely in outpatient settings, a surgeon should have privileges to do the same procedures in the hospital. Dr. Scott Miller is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor, of Plastic Surgery, University of California San Diego, School of Medicine. He is the founder of Miller Cosmetic Surgery Center at Scripps Hospital La Jolla. Dr. Miller has published several textbook chapters on aesthetic plastic surgery and numerous articles in plastic surgery journals. He is also active with the Interface International Volunteer Surgery Program. Dr. Miller can be reached at millercosmeticsurgery.com or by phone at 858-453-3133
