PUBLISHER’S LETTER
C e l e b r at i n g Hometown San Diego Dear Readers, There is many a reason why San Diego is ‘America’s Finest City’. Beyond our coastal climate and hillside slopes of a transverse range, our culture contributes to the appeal and fullness of our quality of life. Spanning our city, we afford a much lauded lifestyle that hosts a flourishing arts community, pristine Southern California sand and surf, the lure of fine dining, an engaging entertainment scene and a thriving economy of business and tourism. This is our home, our daily muse. And for this very reason, our August issue is proudly dedicated to celebrating the varied facets and attributes of San Diego living. From the designs of Le Dimora and dining at 1500 Ocean, to our hometown brands and sporting teams, take pride in our ‘So Cal’ state of mind – a reality that is truly hard to beat. Please join us on August 28th for ‘Polo for a Purpose’ during San Diego Polo’s USPA Rossmore Cup at the fields in Rancho Santa Fe. As a proud sponsor of the event, ‘Polo for a Purpose’ will highlight both a live and silent auction, a fashion show produced by Brittany Simpson of Fashion Forward and a VIP luncheon; the event directly benefits Kids Korps USA. Kids Korps is a leading local resource for youth volunteerism, engaging thousands of young people (ages 5-25) and their families in community service. Their mission is to instill in youth the spirit of giving while provide valuable education in leadership and responsibility. More Than A Feeling M.Dot Design Studio Although it starts with a feeling, it certainly does not end there. When asked what fashion means to custom clothes stylist and designer, Michelle Aquino, her answer is forthright: “It’s a way to express yourself.” Operating out of her studio in downtown San Diego, Aquino creates custom clothing for women drawing on her immeasurable talent and passion for classic lines, modernizing them with a contemporary edge. And it usually begins with the fabric.
“ “ “I want to feel good and fabric can make the difference,” she says, adding “color and texture really get me.”
Coming from spare beginnings, Aquino began flexing some creative muscle as she reworked hand-me-downs at an early age, quickly generating her own creations by the age of 11. “My grandmother was a seamstress,” she confides, “and I watched her.” Indeed, many of her ideas stem from classic 20s and 30s styles that become both timeless and hip, as she fuses ‘then and now’ effectively. “A lot of my pieces are tailored with pleating, beading, and ruching to contemporize them.” In addition, Aquino has a keen eye for what will look good on a woman and incorporates the fundamentals of fabric, color and lines that will accentuate the body. “I want to compliment the body type for a specific person,” she says; never creating more than three of a design with most being one-of-a-kind. All functions are performed in-house from pattern sketching to sewing and finish work. Web: mdotdesignstudio.com

Vintage Meets Vavoom Jennafer Grace Handmade Fashion “I am and always have been a body conscious designer,” says custom designer Jennafer Grace. “Historically, I seem to keep a woman’s waist in mind.” Incorporating a lot of cut-outs, revealing just the right amount of tantalizing skin in her clothing line, Grace is further inspired by the fabric itself. “When I put my hands on a textile, I know exactly what kind of silhouette it should have, then I focus on the details and how a modern stylish woman would want to wear it.”
“ “
Incorporating a lot of cut-outs, revealing just the right amount of tantalizing skin in her clothing line,
Grace was also influenced by an artistic grandmother and began sewing early in life, owning her first sewing machine before even entering her teen years. She is inspired by vintage silhouettes but adds unpredictable textiles and colors, thereby contemporizing the style without “over-costuming vintage references.” And while there is a lot of vintage influence in what she creates, Grace also loves to make what she describes as ‘cozy daywear’ that does not make it into edgy photo shoots yet ‘flies off the rack’ at area boutiques. While Grace likes the diversity of making custom pieces, she also creates ‘micro lines’, with three to six identical pieces in various sizes. Web: jennafergrace.com

FINE: After you have worked with a client and see their vision combined with your talents in design, what is it like seeing the finished project for the first time? Barry: The feeling I get when a project is completed is so overwhelming. It’s a fabulous feeling to see what I have created with my clients. It is especially rewarding when we deliver a whole room or a whole house at one time. When we walk out, the fur niture is placed, the pictures and artwork are hung, the plants are delivered and the accessorizing is the icing on the cake! u L eDimora l e d i m ora.com

Tracee Brunetti Sometimes it doesn’t take a childhood on a ranch in Argentina or a polo pedigree to enjoy the game at a higher level. Tracee is a testament to just how fast someone with the willingness to learn and the passion to play can excel at the sport of polo. A native San Diegan with roots in Point Loma, Tracee happened upon an advertisement offering a free lesson at the San Diego Polo Club, “I called and asked if you had to know how to ride a horse to try the class. Patti Fitzgerald answered the phone and said, “No! Just come on down!’ So I did.” In addition to playing in international locations such as England and the Dominican Republic, Tracee can also count a Female MVP award at the SDPC on her list of accomplishments. As a balancing activity, polo brings her clarity in a life we often find cluttered and distracting, “When I play polo, nothing else exists.”

DIEGO COSSIO Diego Cossio grew up on a sugar cane ranch in Tucuman, a province about 1,200 kilometers north of Bueno Aires. His family’s land was covered with horses and he learned to play polo from his father. Diego’s strategy for winning involves a specific game plan and tries to keep his team connected throughout play. A kiss and hug from his family, Stacie and Colton, have always given him luck and success both on and off of the polo field. Over the years, Diego has come to know countless polo players and he says that without a doubt, Mariano Fassetta is his best friend within the sport. Likewise, Joe Henderson is his favorite player to compete against because of his warrior-like skills and clean play. Diego hopes to continue his professional career for years to come.
