LETTER From The EDITOR
Many philosophers have proposed different paths to enlightenment. They have suggested that meditation, isolation and asceticism lead to a consciousness in which everything is perceived as one. But I’m drawn to Ken Kesey’s view: “It isn’t by getting out of the world that we become enlightened, but by getting into the world … by getting so tuned in that we can ride the waves of our existence and never get tossed because we become the waves.” The world is, after all, an amazing place. And in the past century, even the oceans seem to have receded as communication has advanced. In a moment, I can connect with friends in London and Paris, browse the fashion houses of Milan and marvel at the latest trends in Tokyo. In-line with the international scene, our October issue unveils fashion, home designs, travel and culinary flavors from around the globe. This “village” issue celebrates a myriad of cultures and traditions, from resorts in Bali and the Baja Peninsula, to international home and beauty trends available right here in San Diego. It’s a global affair that is sure to draw you in. Join me in becoming the waves.

Living Lifestyle Luxury Big Dreams
Big Dreams
True to its name, Baja’s GranSueño resort makes travel fantasies a reality.
By Machel Penn
T
he Sea of Cortez has been the site of many dreams, famously inspiring John Steinbeck to pen “The Pearl,” a novella about the discovery of a giant pearl. The sea’s tranquility sets the stage for moments of peace and reflection, drawing travelers in search of treasure or an escape. Unlike Steinbeck’s ill-fated pearl, GranSueño, which means “Big Dream,” is a jewel easily in reach for residents in Southern California. Managing Director Mark Azoff recently spoke with FINE Magazine about this Baja resort. FINE Magazine: GranSueño is located on the ‘Bay of Dreams’ near La Paz, Mexico. When did this destination open and what is the resort’s style? Mark Azoff: GranSueño was originally built as a private second estate residence of the founder of the Bahia de los Suenos development. The original footprint of GranSueño covers some 30 acres of the 4,300-plus acres of ‘the Bay’ development, located in a relatively remote oasis on the Sea of Cortez. It was designed to showcase the possibilities of what (others) could build as their own dream. In addition to his dreams and vision for a spectacular seaside resort community resonating a classic Mexican/European village, the founder also brought paved roads to the property edge and brought in electricity, water and Wi-Fi technology. As a resort, GranSueño took the private home feel and in
late 2006, evolved as a collection of villas and casitas now totaling 23 rooms. As its buildings are generously positioned throughout the 30 acres laid out against the sea, whether it’s sold out for a large private group event or occupied with a mix of couples and families, GranSueño always feels private. There are several common gathering places on the grounds, including the spectacular white sand beach, Trenes restaurant, the fabulous Establo (stable) and several so-called public pools. GranSueño is truly a dream unto itself and can provide the backdrop of personal dreams and special memories of each of our guests. FINE: Located on the Sea of Cortez, what excursions are within reach of GranSueño? Azoff: GranSueño is just 36 miles southeast of the Baja Sur capital city of La Paz and 75 miles northeast of Los Cabos. Both vibrant cities have their own wonderful culture, restaurants and tourist attractions. Also within an hour’s drive is the artist village — and surfers’ mecca — of Todos Santos on the Pacific Coast. GranSueño is located at what is locally known as a sport fisherman’s paradise, where the Dorado, marlin, yellow fin and the like are in abundance throughout the year. We are also close to spectacular diving and snorkeling in what Jacque Cousteau referred to as ‘the aquarium of the world.’ [ continued on page 24 ]

Our team is trained to be able to react to guests’ needs and communicate swiftly to meet their needs. Baja California Sur. We are proud of our security and safety
Azoff: We have had the honor to serve many weddings over the years. While our Capilla is a truly uplifting, magical and spiritual place of GranSueño, there have been several venues on the property that have been host to the traditional and not-sotraditional ceremonies. We custom design all of our weddings,

Azoff: This particular question does come up, and we liken it to a geography lesson. First of all, La Paz is one of the safest cities not only in Mexico, but the entire world. That being said, guests anywhere should demonstrate respect and intelligent behavior no matter where they travel. The issues about Mexico in general that are purported in the media, actually happen closer to where we live in the U.S. than where travelers are in record at GranSueño, where we have similar systems to other resorts in the world. La Paz is a modern city of more than opportunity to host tourists from around the world. Tourism is a key ingredient to the economy in La Paz, and the community is passionate to nurture and grow it. Mirror, Mirror San Diego reflects international beauty trends. By Jeanne Ferris
O
nce upon a time, an apothecary used to be the pharmacist or aesthetician from whom one would seek the handcrafted beauty elixir or a botanical prescription for pain or illness. These concoctions would be culled fresh from the garden and presented in whole organic form: seeds, pulp, stem and all. The esoteric art of mixing serums, creams and oils with essences and extracts of herbs, flowers and minerals come from biblical traditions. In moving forward with new knowledge for managing sun damage, free radicals, stress and life-threatening maladies, the increased demand for remedies created with purity has become competitive. Today’s scientific research in sustainable health care has enabled parallel advancement in cosmetic chemistry through medical research and clinical trials. With the onset of technology, sometimes faster and cheaper mechanical processing isn’t always the way. The beauty of technology is in the painstaking commitment to producing and buying organics for internal or external consumption. Mirabella Mansori The organics offered on Mirabella Mansori’s shelf read like an apothecaries’ library in old world Europa. Proprietor and licensed aesthetician Bernadette Mansori lovingly cultivates

A childhood working in the family business of resort spas in upstate New York, coupled with 20 years experience in the skin and beauty industry, has imbued Mansori’s complexion with the bloom of organic. “We carry Yonka which is French, Ilike which is Hungarian and Phytobiodermie which is Swiss. Yonka is our top-selling European skin care line and for our clients who will only consider 100-percent organic, Ilike is the product of choice. Phytobiodermie has an eye cream containing karite shea nut butter and rosemary for microcirculation for the delicate eye area,” Mansori said. “The most advanced trends in the industry are working with stem cells. We have recently discovered a local company (BioRegenerative Sciences), whose products restore human growth factor and the results are profound. It’s made with a lot of integrity and super clean.” Most professional spa, salon and retail products commonly available contain a hidden ingredient, which is alcohol or a mix of alcohol and water. This is a common solvent used for herbal extraction (liquid solution) and its main purpose is shelf life and convenience. Organic products like Ilike — which meets strictly enforced organic standards and is recognized internationally — contain

Fall Into Color Le Dimora is alive with this season’s trends in interior design.

hile the exteriors of our region’s Tuscan-style home are still rustic and sun-baked, many residents are now adding bold colors to their interior décor. After all, color is the latest trend, and Le Dimora Décor and Interior Design is on top of the style du jour. Many exciting new accents and accessories don Le Dimora’s showroom, which is located at the Del Rayo Fairbanks Plaza. Rancho Santa Fe is known as one of the most affluent communities in the world, and Le Dimora just happens to have an 11,000-square-foot showroom in the heart of this enclave privy to the wealthy and the famous. So it’s no surprise that the inside of Le Dimora feels like a private estate, with eclectic and contemporary furniture capturing the sophisticated and affluent style of Southern California. Maria Barry and Cindy Cerenzie launched Le Dimora in 2007. Originally located in the Santuluz Verazzano Shopping Center, the business partners moved their showroom to the sought-after 92067 zip code that includes residents such as Bill Gates and Phil Mickelson. A freelance designer in Rancho Santa Fe since 1995, Barry brings 10 years of prior East Coast experience. Le Dimora also has eight designers on staff that work with Barry and Cerenzie. Barry had one word for this season’s trend. “Color, color, color, she explained. “We are bringing in a lot of new and old favorites, but showing them in color as opposed to the gold and brown tones that we are used to seeing. It’s very exciting to see the pieces come alive and take on a whole new dimension. Colorful accessories and area carpets in fun and bold designs and have also jazzed up our showroom.” Barry was also anticipating the arrival of items they purchased

“With incredible service, fair pricing and an amazing experience—while taking out all the pain out of decorating—Le Dimora offers every service imaginable.” - Maria Barry at the famed High Point Market in North Carolina. “There are some exciting new designs that are hitting the showroom every day now,” she said. Popular brands at Le Dimora include Marge Carson and Hancock and Moore, a “high-end brand that specializes in transitional and traditional leather,” according to Barry, who added that Lillian August — a Le Dimora exclusive for San Diego — is also in demand. “Some of their new mirrored pieces are fabulous,” she gushed. This fall, think bold. Update your interior with new textures, vibrant accents and simple furniture pieces. And if the that thought is intimidating, remember that style and elegance are accessible to anyone if they know where to buy the must-have brands and whom to hire for interior design. “With incredible service, fair pricing and an amazing experience — while taking out all the pain out of decorating — Le Dimora offers every service imaginable,” Barry said. “We want our clients to always feel positive and have an enjoyable lasting experience.” After all, as Henry David Thoreau said: “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” For more information, visit ledimora.com.

With today’s luxe models, hovering is encouraged.

T
ime is a thing in which supply never quite meets with demands. This tends to be especially true for the business executive and traveling elite. Every second counts. Sometimes the call of business is too impatient to wait in traffic for hours, deal with airport security checkpoints, or be inconvenienced by any of the thousand interruptions that can occur while moving across the ground. This, of course, is why luxury helicopters were invented — well, that and just enjoying the thrill of the ride. The gold standard in luxury helicopters this year is the Hermes EC-135 Eurocopter. The new aircraft is the result of a partnership between the folks at Eurocopter and the design and luxury goods firm House of Hermes. The EC 135 sits at the perfect balance point between elegance and safety. Before its luxury iteration, the EC 135 was primarily a police and medical transportation craft. It has two engines, that safeguard against the possibility of a crash during engine failure. With an overall height of 11 feet, and a cabin

spacious enough to seat four in the cabin — in addition to the two pilots — the the EC-135 is not the typical crampedquarters helicopter experience. Its average cruising speed runs at around 158 mph, and it climbs at about 1,500 feet per minute, which is about as fast as any copter could climb, and is likely much faster than a leisure flight or business meeting will necessitate. The EC 135 Hermes comes fully equipped with everything the highnet-worth commuter needs to feel comfortable and at home while traveling well above sea level. Famed designer Gabriele Pezzini was brought in to bring a little style and flare to the cabin. The process of transforming the EC135 into a luxury craft was, however, by no means easy. Due to the immense volume of regulations surrounding helicopter engineering and design, Pezzini had to work closely with a crew of engineers to find a solid middle ground for many of his proposed alterations. After much deliberation, 50 modifications were approved as feasible and appropriate. These modifications included changes to

The interior panels now sport the characteristic “toile h” canvas design employed by House of Hermes on high-end luggage and other products. Space within the cabin was also rearranged to maximize breathability and comfort for passengers. The seats — for both the pilot and the passengers — are covered in calf ’s leather, and fabrics were used to dampen sound in the cabin. Those looking for more of an executive flight industry standard might also be interested in the Sikorsky S-76C++. The Sikorsky S-76 has a long history of excellence, and has been steadily improving its track record of safety and customer satisfaction with every new model. In the helicopter industry, safety takes first priority. Sikorsky has gone through great pains to make sure its clients are as safe in their helicopters as they are on their feet. The four-beam flexbeam tail rotor ensures a steady, even ride at winds of up to 35 knots, and with the new Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) and Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning
40
System (EGPWS) in place, Sikorsky can safely say that it has employed all of the industries finest technologies to guarantee the safety of its customers. The S-76C++ also offers a host of customizable features to ensure its clients get precisely what they are looking for from their aircraft. There are a great variety of fabrics, colors and amenities from which customers can choose for each individual craft, and optional features include worktables, satellite phones, flight progress displays and refinement cabinets. Several different seating arrangements are also possible, and customers can choose whether they would like their cabins equipped for either five, six, seven or eight individuals. The market for luxury helicopters is exclusive and finite. They are very rare and expensive products to design and produce, and as few as one or two of any given model might be sold in a year. And of this elite group, the EC-135 and Sikorsky S-76C++ are far ahead of the pack.

ith gum disease affecting a surprising amount of the country, Dr. Valentina Obradovic had to take action. The San Marcos dentist became certified in the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure, a treatment that eliminates diseased gum tissue while leaving healthy tissue intact. In fact, Obradovic was one of the first to bring this modern and efficient method of treating gum disease to San Diego. In her effort to provide gum disease patients with a treatment that is less invasive than traditional gum surgery, Obradovic has seen tremendous results since performing the FDA-cleared procedure. It is estimated that more than 75 percent of Americans have some form of gum disease, which in the beginning stages causes red, swollen gums that may bleed while brushing or flossing. It is important to brush and floss daily to prevent plaque buildup, which traps bacteria and causes these symptoms. Commonly known as gingivitis, gum disease can still be reversed in the beginning. But once it passes this stage, gum disease becomes periodontitis. At this point the gums begin to form “pockets,” deep hollow areas around the teeth that trap food, plaque and bacteria. The gums start to recede and form gaps between the teeth. In advanced stages, teeth are loose and begin shifting. Aside from the obvious dangers of losing teeth and eventually the jaw structure, neglecting treatment for periodontal disease can lead to larger health risks such
as heart disease and diabetes. Since there are millions of germs in the human mouth, gum disease leaves open wounds in the gums that allow bacteria to enter directly into the blood stream and circulate through the body. To avoid major health risks, it is important to seek periodontal disease treatment. That’s where the laser surgery comes in. Obradovic begins the procedure with a probe to determine the depth of the gum pockets. Using the patented PerioLase® MVP-7, she is able to kill the bacteria in the gum pockets and selectively remove any diseased gum tissue. The laser is designed to leave healthy tissue intact, so it does not damage unnecessary tissue. It then stimulates the remaining healthy tissue to reattach to the root of the tooth, and causes the bone to begin growing again. The procedure is considered to be minimally invasive, and sutures are not necessary, which helps to speed up the healing process. Most patients report little discomfort or pain and a quick recovery time. Treating gum disease is much easier when it is in the early stages, so it is important to recognize symptoms and seek immediate treatment. Obradovic consults with patients on an individual basis to determine whether they are good candidates for this procedure. Obradovic graduated from the University of Belgrade dental school, one of the best in the country. A dentist for more than 20 years, she has been through several postgraduate courses in various fields of dentistry and is part of one percent of dental professionals providing the most recent FDA-cleared laser procedure for gum disease and periodontal treatment. To learn more about working with Obradovic in preventing and treating gum disease, visit healthygumsandteethnow.com, or stop by Smiles by Valentina in San Diego or Adriatic Dental in San Marcos.

Skylar’s Home and Patio brings interior design to Carlsbad. By Luke Travis

homes, as with people, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Enter Skylar’s Home and Patio, the true up-and-comer in San Diego’s rich landscape of furniture and mattress retail stores. With a selection that rivals larger outlets and unbeatable service, Skylar’s business, to be sure, is booming. Founded in 2010 by Skylar Ireton — whose relaxed style blends perfectly with Carlsbad’s beach-side mien — the store, like its owner, comes off as perfectly inviting and unpretentious. Situated right across from the Coaster station and merely blocks from the beach, the store’s rustic wood paneling and broad windows present a welcome alterative to the industrial, big-box feel of many furniture outlets. The storefront’s casual vibe runs parallel to the establishment’s focus on supporting other community outlets and establishments. In addition, Skylar’s carries many items that are handmade or otherwise customized, like the Nantucket series furnishings, all of which are made from reclaimed wood and have a seasoned, aesthetically weathered look to them. As for customer service, there is no competition. The hosts of positive Yelp reviews speak for themselves. The Hunt for

October Local organizations lead the way in breast cancer awareness. By: Luke Travis
efore 1985, October was just another month. It did, of course, have Halloween, but this holiday already had an unhealthy fixation on candy and a long historical tradition of paganism. October needed something more solid on which to hang its hat. It was then that the powers that be decided to name October “Breast Cancer Awareness” month. Decades later, two local organizations are on the forefront of this movement, making sure we all remember how important it is to unite against this disease — in October and yearround. Pink Ribbon Annex Among those most excited for the month of October are the folks at Pink Ribbon Annex, a website for women who have or have had breast cancer. The site’s goal, in the words of founder Carolyn Lee Clark, is “to be the top destination for health and wellness products for survivors of breast cancer.” After surviving her second episode of breast cancer, Clark decided it was time to take action. “My aim with Pink Ribbon is the discovery of the new woman for herself,” Clark explains. The underlying philosophy of Pink Ribbon Annex is that breast cancer is invariably a lifechanging experience. Clark is quick to explain that every survivor is transformed into “a new woman” — a phrase she uses frequently. “There is something about a woman after she goes through diagnosis, treatment, medical intimidation that transforms her into a woman with a richer field of vision,” Clark explains. This increased field of vision
is often attended, however, by unwelcome physical discomforts, and women are often left searching unsuccessfully for support networks and products that suit their unique physical needs. The Pink Ribbon Annex is a new kind of resource for women dealing with breast cancer issues. Clark originally envisioned the site as breast cancer’s answer to The Huffington Post. There aren’t any places,” she explains, “that have the aggregated news source and lifestyle products shopping put together in one place.” Pink Ribbon Annex was to be the first, and the best. Much of the Pink Ribbon Annex merchandise consists of lingerie and swimwear. “Everybody talks about healthy,” Clark muses, “but we want to always add beauty to it.” In future months, Clark has plans to partner with Nordstrom’s for a “Sexy after Surgery” fashion show, which will both raise money for awareness efforts and support the development of mastectomyconscious feminine garments. While most of their products come from larger wholesalers at this point, Clark anticipates that very soon the Pink Ribbon Annex will be developing its own line of women’s lingerie and intimates. Clark and the Pink Ribbon Annex staff have been doing a phenomenal job, and their company is growing. Still, the great majority of the site’s business is regional. “We would like to become a little more visible in larger communities across the U.S.,” Clark says. And despite its humble beginnings, it’s not inconceivable that soon, Pink Ribbon Annex will be one of the leaders within the awareness community. For more information, visit pnkanx.com. Susan G. Komen San Diego In the world of breast cancer awareness, The Susan G. Komen foundation is a giant. The San Diego chapter of Susan G. Komen has been around since 1995, and is firmly entrenched as the local leader in the campaign for the cure. Laura Sherman is currently director for the local branch. “We have 1.2 million this year that we’ve granted orgs like Mama’s Kitchen and Breast Cancer Solution and UCSD John Moores Cancer Center and San Yisidro.” According to Laura, “75 percent of funds stay in San Diego,” with the remainder going to research programs abroad. In San Diego, as is the case across almost all of the country, a substantial percentage of the population is not insured. In fact, 38 percent of San Diegans are currently not covered. The Susan G Komen foundation focuses on Laura Sherman this percentage of women who have no access to the resources they need for diagnosis and treatment. “Two thousand women are diagnosed with breast cancer in San Diego every year,” Laura explains. “Last year, we provided 8,000 diagnostic mammograms, thousands of MRIs, ultrasounds and biopsies.” This year, as has been the case since their inception, Susan G Komen San Diego will be sponsoring The Race for the Cure. Organizers anticipate more than 25,000 to come out to the race, although there are only around 15,000 registrants so far. There are always more actual attendees than registrants because, as Laura explains, “It’s like a festival you know, there’s music and there’s a survivor village.” About 57 percent of the foundation’s total revenue comes from these races every year, with the rest coming from cause-related marketing and individual fundraisers. Because of companies and organizations like Susan G. Komen and the Pink Ribbon Annex, the rate of breast cancer fatality has plummeted dramatically since the 1980s. So, remembering that nearly one in eight women gets breast cancer during their lifetime, do what you can to this October to give back to these companies and organizations that are saving lives in the community.

La Jolla Art and Wine Festival When Sherry Ahern, long-time resident of La Jolla, noticed extreme budget cuts at her children’s schools, she decided to incorporate La Jolla’s foundation as an artist village to “help the community bring art back and help the schools.” For its fourth year, the La Jolla Art and Wine Festival will raise money for the art, music, technology, physical education and library programs that have been cut at the local elementary and middle schools. In fact, since launching in 2009, the festival has raised more than $120,000. Migrating from its original location on upper Girard, the festival this year will take place Oct. 13-14 in the heart of the village, between Prospect Avenue and Kline Street, on lower Girard Avenue. This two-day juried art show and fundraiser has quickly garnered a reputation as one of the most prestigious art and wine festivals on the West Coast. The event is free, with cash donations accepted at all the festival entrances. Partnering with the La Jolla Village Merchants Association, Ahern credits the success of this growing event to all the volunteers. “When you band together, you obviously have more strength than on your own,” she says. In fact, Ahern anticipates nearly 450 unpaid volunteers and more than 20,000 attendees. And it’s no surprise that so many will be drawn to the “unique, affordable art,” as well as craft beers and wines from around the world and food from various local restaurants and farmers’ market vendors. Visitors can share in family-friendly activities, all while taking in the beauty of the La Jolla coast. In fact, Ahern suggests that attendees should: “Make a day of it. Make a stay of it.” Check out ljawf.com for more information.

Italian Crush
Italian Crush
Locals are infatuated with this Solana Beach eatery.
By Nicolette Laverty
S
ome crushes may be secret, but Crush Italian Cuisine and Lounge is not. San Diego natives and out-oftowners alike head to the restaurant for its vibrant, casual atmosphere and perfect mix of authentic Italian cuisine, impressive wines and cocktails, and entertainment. Situated on the Pacific Coast Highway in the seaside community of Solana Beach, Crush recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. Executive Chef Jason Calabove, who hails from the restaurants sister location in Chino, Calif. — oversees the menu. Together with head chef Mike Lina, Calabove makes expert use of fresh, local and organic ingredients to reinvent and intensify flavors. The slow-cooked sauces and homemade pastas, combined with modern cooking techniques and wood-fired grills, are sure to please all palates. A popular signature dish is the chicken picatta made with lemon-caper butter and roasted garlic spinach. And the chicken and eggplant parmigiana entrees are nothing less than masterpieces. John Luciano, co-owner with Doug Guillon, likes to keep a low profile, but when he talks about Crush, he beams with pride. With one hand placed over his heart, he shares some background: “I’m 100-percent Italian, and I grew up on the East Coast with some of the best cooks around. Aunts and uncles were constantly trying to outdo each other with their dishes. I think when people come here to Crush, it may be some of the best Italian food they’ll ever have. Our sauce is to die for.” The restaurant entrance welcomes patrons with patio seating and a modern, fire-pit table, where families and friends enjoy savory meals and warm conversation in a cozy ambiance. It’s the perfect spot to share an antipasto platter or some bruschetta made with burrata cheese, cherry tomatoes and

basil pesto. Delizioso. Another “Crush experience” lies inside the restaurant, where the dining room sets the scene for special occasions or a quiet dinner. A vast display of wine is showcased among a blend of modern and rustic décor, including chairs crafted by a local artist from discarded French oak barrels. A sommelier’s expert guidance is on hand to pair your wine with Venus Clam linguine or the Bolognese tagliatelle prepared with a six-hour ragù. A bar and lounge area offer even more options to dine Italiano and enjoy the liquid spirits. With one of the best Happy Hours around, including half off all appetizers, Crush even satisfies the calorie conscious with local, organic skinny cocktails. And it’s time for Taco Tuesday to move over and make way for Meatball Mondays, one of the favorite specials of the house. The meatballs everyone is raving about are just $1 all night long. On the weekends, an intimate dance floor explodes with movement and sounds from live music featuring jazz, Latin, R&B, pop and more. And Luciano is “taking the show on the road” with a fast-growing catering service and a third restaurant set to open its doors this December in Mendocino, Calif. Not only has it pleased local palates, the restaurant also has a strong charitable presence in the community. For example, “Crush for a Cause,” an upcoming fundraiser, will be held on the premises Oct. 22. Crush invites you to join San Diego Charger Quentin Jammer and others to benefit a children’s literacy program. With its hospitality from the heart, the crush on Crush is spreading. Mangia e Bevi!
