PUBLISHER’S LETTER | February 2012

FROM THE p ub l i s h e r Dear Readers, With eateries and dining venues ‘just around the corner’ throughout the county, our attraction as “America’s Finest City” goes well beyond our coastal lifestyle and Southern California charm; the dining scene itself draws much acclaim - noting world renowned chefs, Food Network and Iron Chef personalities, along with a host of top rated menu selections and traditions that span the globe. This in mind, we present FINE’s ‘Food and Wine Issue’ for your review - saluting the local dining scene for its varied flavors, textures and colors from the garden. A sampling of the county’s finest, last month’s ‘Restaurant Week’ here in San Diego did not disappoint; from North Park and La Jolla, to Del Mar, Banker’s Hill, and Point Loma, I was thoroughly impressed with the variety and calibre that continues to define our local dining scene. And in taking advantage of this offering, we encourage you to expand your horizons and explore your palate; with an endless list of choices, you never know where you’ll end up. In the words of Julia Child, “Bon Appetit!”

EDIBLE LUXURY Chocolat Temptations & Cravings | February 2012

Chocolat temptations & cravings By Michele Lynne All photography USED WITH PERMISSION

Beguiling and irresistible by nature, chocolate – since its earliest findings before Columbus – has become a worldwide phenomenon; a craving that has appeared in a variety of beverages and desserts. Grown on trees in South America and Africa, the ever-tasty cacao bean is known to help with depression, high blood pressure, heart disease and stress; not to mention its appeal as an aphrodisiac and holiday treat. Without question, chocolate is a sensory experience, riddled with endless flavor and aroma. And while Godiva, Ghirardelli, Hershey and See’s may be household names, we welcome you to San Diego’s finest chocolate boutiques – to taste and savor the tempting flavors of local chocolatiers.

Boutique Highlight: Featured on Food Network’s “Kid in a Candy Store” with Adam Gertler; the spot included Eclipse’s Citrus Honeycomb Chocolate Rococo made with Plush Puffs marshmallows and dark chocolate. An artist from Ohio, Gustwiller – founder of Eclipse Chocolat – seeks to simply create an experience for his clientele, based upon the marriage of exotic flavor profiles in chocolate. Utilizing handselected and organic ingredients, the boutique also offers online orders, and are available in a number of local and national retailers. And with a strong commitment to the local community, Guestwiller pledges 10 percent of their net-profits to charities; a few have included the San Diego Zoo, Elderhelp,

GIVING BACK American heart association | February 2012

Gotta Have Heart By Luke Travis All photography courtesy of American Heart Association

Empowering individuals and families to live healthier lifestyles and enjoy more peace-of-mind in regards to heart disease and stroke [the #1 and # 3 killers in the U.S, respectively], the American Heart Association is making great strides in educating the community about the heart-felt issue: advocating for smoke-free public places; more walkable and bikable pathways, parks and streets; better nutrition and high quality physical education in schools; along with adequate and affordable healthcare for all. Nationwide, the non-profit has invested over $132 million a year ($3.2 billion since 1949) in heart and stroke research that has led to several recent breakthroughs; including clotbusting drugs and drug-eluting stents.

of the nation’s major sources of information on a range of issues regarding cardiovascular health and well-being. Only 20 years ago, the obesity rate in America was half of what it is today. Data shows that 68 percent of U.S. adults over 20 are overweight or obese. In San Diego, only 45 percent of county residents are maintaining a healthy weight. For this reason, AHA has been gaining traction in recent years and expanding the scope of their operations and outreach. Over the years, AHA has grown into one of the nation’s top five non-profit organizations. A primary research institution, it has funded and conducted research documented in journals such as “Hypertension,” “Circulation Research,” and

to increase heart health awareness, the ever-popular National Wear Red Day will be held on february 3, 2012.

For Heart campaign, which provides jump rope instruction and cardiovascular information sessions to kids throughout the area. The Hoops for Heart campaign, which is another major component of their education strategy, also uses an integrated method of exercise and instruction to provide opportunities that allow kids to learn about their health and how to improve it. Recently, the San Diego chapter has spearheaded an initiative called “Go Red For Women” to raise awareness specifically for heart disease, which is the number one cause of medically-related deaths each year for American women. The 2012 12th Annual “Go Red for Women” campaign will be hosted in March at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, which will feature a silent auction, luncheon and fashion show. The event is preceded by the ever-popular and publicized National Wear Red Day on February 3, which helps raise funds and awareness for the cause. Perhaps the month of February, in which we are bombarded with cards and images of dancing cupids and bleeding hearts, will remind us of the importance of staying true to our own hearts, so that we can stick around a little longer, lest our loved ones lose their Valentine’s too soon. A gathering place of sorts - where meals take center stage and family and friends come to crowd, kitchens are without a doubt a home’s main hub. As a result, function, form and aesthetics of the space are equally imperative to its design; reflecting, of course, the natural lifestyle and daily routine of its residents. In showcasing some of San Diego’s top talent in design, here is a sample of truly inspiring kitchens and family dining.

To integrate modern style into this Spanish family home, innovative, creative and functional design come together to create a unique experience for the buyer. Inspired by the bold and spicy color and flavor of sangria, and cooled by a muted blend of linen and crisp white, the fabrics, artwork and accessories make a daring statement in the space. The eye-catching light fixtures mounted on the mirrored wall above the Dining Room banquette seating makes a stunning impact. Accents of traditional heavily-carved Spanish furniture blended with the clean lines and comfortable upholstery create a striking combination.

When it comes to a coastal palette, blue and white is the go-to color combination for creating that “beach cottage look” with a splash of style. So, when designer Peter Karoll took on the remodel of this La Jolla home, he knew exactly how the kitchen should look. The cabinetry would be crisp white, the walls pale blue, along with touches of sea grass and nautical accents. And by opening the space up to the living room, adding an island and

vaulting the ceiling, Karoll created a room that was both spacious and cozy all at the same time.

Once the decision to remodel the kitchen had been made, the goal for this project was to make the most use of limited space. So, when designer Peter Karoll began planning, giving this active family of four in La Jolla plenty of growing room was as important as making it look good. Instead of a typical walk-in pantry, the space was redesigned with a wall of deep cabinets and a cubby-hole desk at one end which allowed for an island large enough to sit everyone. The end result was extremely functional with an equal measure of style.

In a twist of fate, the kitchen counters and island bar of polished silver grey marble coupled with the deep red teak Italian cabinets create a dramatic set to food preparation and pre-dinner gatherings. Overflowing to a spacious family/breakfast room and pool terrace, the space functions as the epitome of family living. When this La Jolla home of more than 10,000 square feet is entertaining formally, leather clad sliding doors enclose the space to contain full catering functions and facilitates elegant party service for modern family friendly celebrations. It was designed by Island Architects’ Tony Crisafi, AIA, with interiors by Diarq Diseno y Arquitectura.
