LETTER From The EDITOR
S
urrounded by the refined luxury only Southern California can offer, it’s easy to forget that we live on the edge of the wilderness. To the west lies the Pacific Ocean, an expanse that remains beautifully untamed.
And San Diego is a bit like that. The pounding tides are the heartbeat of our city, coursing through our veins and drawing us to the coast—to surf, to play, to gaze. The city mirrors the fierce beauty and natural allure of the sea. That’s why I am so pleased to come on as editor-in-chief of FINE Magazine, a luxury publication that has its finger on the pulse of the best this region has to offer. We’re excited to capture the spirit and refinement of America’s Finest City. This issue is our love letter to the sea, to the wild that surrounds us. In it, we celebrate life on and near the water, from luxury cruising and the latest yachts, to coastal living and downtown pools. And we highlight the work of Give Clean Water, a San Diego-based organization intent on giving Fiji’s poor clean drinking water — one household at a time. We hope you answer the call of the water and enjoy this latest installment of FINE living.

The Sea’s Sanctuary Escape to the open seas in the latest luxury yachts. By Luke Travis
H
enry David Thoreau went to the woods “to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life.” But Thoreau lived in Massachusetts, not Southern California, and given the option, we’re pretty sure he would head to the open seas to “put to rout all that was not life.” Because as every San Diegan knows, the vast expanse of the Pacific has a lot to offer in reflection and living. Thankfully, yachting season is upon us, and the big names are all releasing their newest models to cruise the waves. And judging by their good looks, it looks like this will be a year to remember. For those seeking the ultimate in luxury, look no further than the Sunseeker Manhattan 63. This spacious 69-foot boat boasts two bedroom suites, two smaller bedrooms, three washrooms, a couple of lounge areas and a galley. There is no shortage of interior room and plenty of deck space. Maximum cruise speed for this vessel is around 23 knots, but guests on the Manhattan 63 will be far too relaxed from the boat’s amenities to worry about going anywhere particularly fast. It’s the ideal purchase for those who have dreamed of taking their luxury condo out on the sea. Those looking for a social vessel will find that Fraser is still the
go-to brand. With a selection of more than 20 yachts covering a broad spectrum of styles, shapes and sizes, there is sure to be something in this leading yachting company’s repertoire that fits the every need of its clients. Complete with helicopter pads, hot tubs, verandas, bars, pools and even dancing platforms, it seems these ships can do everything except fly—and some of them get pretty good speed on the water. Fraser also offers full-service yacht maintenance and a support crew for every voyage, so owners need not tax themselves with the many unwelcome contingencies that can accompany ownership of a large and complex machine. Those looking for a more intimate vessel might be drawn to the new Silverton 40 West Coast Edition. According to its designer Chris Boz, the Silverton 40 WCE is “designed to give the customer all the comforts of a 50-foot boat in a 40-foot boat—for half the price.” This new version of the Silverton comes with a few substantial improvements over the old. The canvas top has been replaced with a fiberglass hardtop, which allows for better temperature control, prevents erosion and offers more protection from inclement weather. Stateroom windows were expanded to offer better views, stern thrusters were added to facilitate

vessel docking for new pilots, and an additional 90 gallons were added to the fuel tank. Cruise on it for a small day-party excursion, or take it down to Baja over the weekend. The next step up is the Marquis 500, a highly refined 50foot vessel designed by Nuvolari Lenard of Venice, the much-celebrated yacht design studio. Known for its obsessive attention to detail and careful craftsmanship, Nuvolari Lenard lives up to Italy’s incredibly high standards for luxury goods. From the outside, the Marquis resembles a sleek bullet, made to run through the sea at an alarming rate (37.7 knots). Fitted with hardwood floors, a small galley, several bedchambers and a shower, the yacht’s interior serves as a comfortable suite on the sea. All this had Mike Werling—renowned industry professional and yacht expert—calling it a “head turner” and the perfect boat for those who wish simply to “eat, drink and be merry.” Within the rush of life, it can be difficult to find that strong personal space to enjoy the pleasure of being alone with your thoughts or a few good friends. Heading out to the open seas is one of the last few refuges—a chance to reconnect and enjoy the wildness of nature in the most civilized way. F

Bliss 101—a coastal art gallery and home décor boutique located in downtown Encinitas—is currently exhibiting the photography of local surf icon and Cardiff native Rob Machado. Bliss is the first to offer this exhibit, which encapsulates Machado’s worldwide travels. The collection offers a glimpse of the surfer’s view of his hometown, including views of the Cardiff sunset and Swami’s. “My parents live right up the street from Swami’s,” Machado says. “It’s basically where I learned how to surf… It will always have a special place in my heart.” Machado’s work will be on sale for the entire month of June. Hotel Del Reveals Its Facelift
Art and Wine
At 124 years old, Hotel del Coronado was ready for a makeover. San Diego’s historic icon just underwent an $8-million renovation of its 368 guestrooms that defines modern luxury while retaining classic elegance and period style. Conceived by Looney & Associates, the design is softly contemporary, with sophisticated elegance as the hallmark. Victorian era motifs are used in fabrics, textures and geometric forms. The recreated guestrooms now meld state-of-the art amenities and technology—including 42-inch flat-screen televisions and high-speed Internet access—with the charm and timeless beauty of the ocean the legendary resort embodies.
For those who felt the only thing art class was missing was a good bottle of wine, PaintNVineyard recently opened its doors in Scripps Ranch. In these two-hour classes, professional art instructors Jennifer Doehring and Jeff Remmer guide patrons through basic brushstrokes to create their own works of art. All painting supplies are provided, but students are encouraged to bring a bottle of their favorite wine and let their creativity flow. Classes are $35, offered up to four times a week, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. With advance planning, PaintNVineyard can also bring art classes to your home or business.

Living Lifestyle Luxury A GLASS OF COLD WATER
A Glass of Cold Water A San Diego charity seeks to provide clean water for Fiji’s poor. By Rosalie Cushman
D
arrel Larson, Give Clean Water’s founder and a veteran in nonprofits, has focused on improving the lives of the impoverished around the globe. During
his international travels, he noted that many poor people lack clean drinking water — and that its prominent role in illness and death could be remedied or even prevented. In 2006, Larson decided to focus on the problem in Fiji, an island nation best known as a tropical paradise and vacation destination.
Larson — pastor at Newbreak church in Scripps Mesa — thought the scope of the problem in Fiji was solvable, and that it could be used as a test case for other locations around the world. And the San Diego-based organization Give Clean Water, Inc. was born. The organization serves “one household at a time” — giving out water filters so families in Fiji can have clean water to drink.

Living Lifestyle Luxury LUXURY cruises
The Open Seas Luxury cruising is all about the journey. By Machel Penn Shull
A
s we have developed faster and faster ways to get where we need to go, vacation has become less about the journey, and more about the destination. Time spent in planes, trains and automobiles is reduced to a brief intrusion into our plans. And while we are now able to get to more places faster, we can sometimes miss the possibility in the voyage. Thankfully, luxury cruise liners have preserved the art of travel, allowing for days spent on the open seas devoted entirely to relaxation and rejuvenation. And there is no shortage of voyages departing from southern California. Accompanying the luxury of balmy weather is our privy access to the port of San Diego, which welcomes travelers from all over the world. Those looking for an escape can book a cruise that sails between new and exciting ports. Holland America Line, which still boards out of the Port of San Diego during the wintertime, has nearly 140 years of experience sailing the open seas. In fact, the oldest cruise ship line in the world—P&O Cruises—only pre-dates Holland America by 36 years. And thanks to its “Signature of Excellence” program, Holland America has upgraded amenities, improved dining options, expanded the youth
38
facilities and added larger cabins, providing an option of luxurious travel. Gone are the days of small portholes and crammed beds. On Holland America Line, guests can book a grand suite the size of a two-bedroom apartment, devoting nearly 1,300 square feet of personal space on the ship. The penthouse Verandah Suites include a king-sized bed, Jacuzzi bathtub with shower, a separate living room, dining room, expansive windows and a private verandah—all enhanced by luxurious décor. Guests also have access to 24-hour concierge service at their fingertips. Out of the Port of San Diego on the Holland America, guests have a choice of a seven-day excursion to the Mexican Rivera or a 21-day cruise to the Hawaiian Islands. And the indecisive can choose both with the 21-day Mexico and Hawaii Collectors’ trip. Beginning off the shores of Mexico, this voyage docks in Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas, before island hopping in Hawaii, dividing the days among Hilo, Lahaina, Honolulu and Nawiiwii in Kauai. For those who cherish nothing more than the vast blue horizon and the ship parting the Pacific Ocean, this trip offers 10 days out at sea between the ports in Hawaii and Mexico. For a longer and more adventurous cruise, take the quick drive
up the coast to Los Angeles Port, from which Crystal Cruises departs. This luxury cruise line has options for traveling many ports all over the world, including the “Los Angeles To London Explorer Combination.” This 33-day excursion takes guests halfway around the world, including port stops in Mexico, Costa Rica, the British West Indies, New York, Iceland and Norway. See this changing landscape from Crystal Cruises’ wellappointed staterooms and suites, which boast private verandahs, Internet access and the softest linens, including plush Frette robes and personal slippers. The Crystal Penthouse has separate living and dining areas, a private workout studio, three flat-screen televisions and a personal butler to anticipate every need. When all you have to do is walk on board, travel becomes a moment to be savored, a relaxing retreat that can change your worldview. As Miriam Beard said, “Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” And living is about the journey. F

The Value of a Smile Smiles By Valentina, a dental practice, nestled in the heart of Re3 Salon and Spa at the UTC.
T
here may be a reason why dentists and dental surgeons have received a bad rap over the years, but one local dental practice is breaking through traditional fears and leading the way to a new era of dental surgery. With dental pioneer Dr. Valentina Obradovic at the helm, Adriatic Dental in San Marcos has taken virtually all the pain out of gum procedures, replacing painful blade-and-suture surgery with a new breakthrough laser therapy. Using the latest technology available, Adriatic Dental encourages the body to heal itself naturally, helping regenerating bone and the gums’ soft tissue instead of cutting it away. This precise and holistic alternative lases away infection, eliminating the need for stiches, and allows the patient to return to work the next day. And the San Marcosbased practice is at the forefront of this therapy. In fact, it was one of the first offices in the area to obtain this cutting-edge laser and offer the procedure. Some 80 percent of the population has a form of gum disease, but many people avoid the dentist because of bad experiences in the past. For patients concerned about dental
surgery, laser therapy can be life-changing. Instead of ignoring the problem, these patients can save their teeth, preserve their natural smile and avoid the potentially life-threatening effects of gum disease. While laser therapy is changing the face of dental surgery, Dr. Obradovic adds that preventive dentistry can not only lessen the need for surgery—it can add 10 years to a person’s life. “Good oral health care plays a big part in your good overall health,” she says. “With preventive services such as regular dental exams and cleanings, we can help you keep your teeth and gums healthy.” And Dr. Obradovic doesn’t stop at preserving healthy teeth and gums. Her practice is consumed with making its patients feel as comfortable as possible while doing so. In fact, Adriatic Dental goes the extra mile to ensure its patients are smiling at the end. “We are also concerned with your comfort,” Dr. Obradovic says, “and take great strides to ensure your visits with us are something you look forward to.” Looking forward to the dentist? Imagine that.

Coastal Allure
Seaside living in San Diego boasts unrivaled benefits. By Joyce “Jlynn” Gonzalez
O
cean waters glistening along a stretch of sandy beaches, rimmed by exquisite sunset views, are part of daily life in coastal San Diego. And those who uncover the rare gems of prime real estate spanning the coast from Cardiff to Del Mar to La Jolla and Coronado are not disappointed with the charm and appeal of the county’s beach communities. “America’s Finest City” boasts an array of uniquely architectured estates that enjoy the serenade of the rolling Pacific. Many of these gorgeous, retreat-style homes can be found perched on the shores and hills along the cliffs of some of Southern California’s most coveted real estate. A favorite real estate destination and one of San Diego’s premier luxurious beach-style communities is La Jolla. Michelle Serafini, a certified luxury specialist from Coldwell Banker,
knows “location, location, location” is what it’s all about. She is quite familiar with the dynamic culture of La Jolla. “La Jolla is unique because it is a village within a city,” Serafini explains. “La Jolla offers a complete lifestyle from shopping, galleries, dining, education, business and beach. Many La Jollans rarely leave the greater La Jolla area because of its individuality and how the community brings strength to the real estate, not only for the residents who live in La Jolla full-time, but also for the investors who own second and third homes here.” An example of one of these desired La Jolla properties is a breathtaking ocean-front estate that Serafini sold last fall. The property lends itself to the scenic views of our amazing coastline along with sweeping ocean vistas to Point Loma and the Coronado Islands. This spacious three-bedroom, ( continued on page 44 )

three-bath home features two full-sized patio wooden decks overlooking the Pacific, and offers the ultimate in alfresco, beach-side dining. The home’s contemporary and clean interior showcases floorto-ceiling bayside windows, successfully bringing the beauty of nature indoors. An open floorplan and vaulted ceilings give a spacious feel, and the expansive kitchen — finished off with granite countertops alongside white-washed cabinetry — is ideal for preparing gourmet feasts while admiring the ocean’s horizon. A private enclosed entryway and a courtside patio with fireplace are ideal for entertaining. On the other side of La Jolla, the historical coastal community of Coronado Islands is renowned for its iconic Hotel del Coronado, where once upon a time, old-Hollywood starlets such as Marilyn Monroe basked on the beach. Surrounded by water, this coveted location possesses some of the most beautiful seaside views available. Currently on the market is an intimate cottage-style estate that enjoys bay-front patio dining with brick-accented fire

pit with encompassing views of the glimmering lights of the downtown cityscape. Jan Clements, Real Estate Specialist from Prudential, is seeking an owner for this three-bedroom, four-bath home. As dusk rolls in and the evening night approaches, the panoramic views of the city can be seen from almost every room in this single story beauty. Guests will appreciate the quaint interiors of white-washed vaulted ceilings with exposed beams and hardwood floors throughout the home. The gourmet kitchen offers wood countertops that complement the hardwood floors, and a center island with stainless steel appliances and whitewashed cabinetry. Nestled on manicured grounds, this tranquil oasis is the perfect estate to capture the ambiance of living right on Coronado Bay. Private Haven
Enjoy exclusive benefits at The University Club Atop Symphony Towers.
By Machel Penn Shull
F
or more than a century, this private club has made its home amidst the clouds, back-dropped by the city’s blue skies. The University Club Atop Symphony Towers offers members a sophisticated venue to mingle while enjoying a stunning view of San Diego’s skyline. Founded 116 years ago, the club was initially created by 21 men and women who wanted to unite distinguished colleagues over interesting topic and common interests. Inspired by this heritage, The University Club offers the choicest in fine living and dining. Located on the 34th floor of Symphony Towers, the club’s contemporary décor lends to the inviting setting for business leaders to connect and establish new relationships within San Diego. Private meeting and event rooms are also available for larger networking groups, and members rely on the Apollo Lounge for a more casual, intimate setting. Club Manager Tommy Trause recently answered FINE’s questions about this prestigious club.
64
FINE Magazine: How would you describe the atmosphere of the University Club? Tommy Trause: The University Club is truly that — a club. Although we are fortunate to be located in the penthouse of Symphony Towers and boast 360-degree views of the city, bay and ocean, the true atmosphere of the club is a reflection of its members. They truly create a high-energy, exciting vibe at the Club. FINE: Is it easy to join the University Club? Trause: Membership is by invitation, through referrals from our existing membership. We are proud to represent over 3,000 members. FINE: Who is the chef of the University Club? Trause: Our Executive Chef Eric Mauritzen, has been at the helm for the past 13 years. He gained his classic instruction at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y.

“We provide both an elevated, special-occasion experience and a more everyday gastropub outlet.” - Tommy Trause, manager of University Club
FINE: What is your specialty dish? Trause: It depends on which of the 3,000 members that you ask! We do an annual White Truffle Dinner, where we fly in truffles from Alba, Italy, and do about 10 courses. It is spectacular. FINE: What kind of menu can guests of club members expect when they visit? Trause: We serve Modern American cuisine. We provide both an elevated, special-occasion experience and a more everyday gastropub outlet. The elegance and the ambience in the 1909 Founder’s Room entails more than just a spectacular view of the downtown. The wait staff delivers superlative service, and club members and guests have many exquisite choices from the menu,
including broiled Maine Lobster served with mushroom pearl pasta, and a grilled Berkshire pork chop, served with roast red kuri squash, quince chutney with an apple brandy sauce. Perhaps the club’s menu best sums up the dining at this exclusive club: “Over 100 years later, the Club still embodies the ideals cherished by its founding. In this vein, we hope you enjoy fine company, fine food and fine wine in the 1909 Founders’ Room.” The University Club offers an escape with a spectacular view and exceptional benefits that includes three choices of membership levels: My Club, My Community, and My World. Perks include access to the downtown location, other private clubs and golf, depending on which membership. For information on membership, call director Casey Falkner at 619-798-9972. F
