LETTER From The EDITOR

It’s been 75 years since Bing Crosby greeted the first fan to pass through the gates at the Del Mar Races. Back then, the venue was a playground for Old Hollywood, a place to watch and be watched. Today, the races are, just as their marketing touts—as “cool as ever.” The San Diego institution still attracts the region’s shakers and movers, drawn to the allure that accompanies speed and power. There’s something about the grace of the horses, the thrill of the race that brings us back every year. It’s a spirited event that captures the essence of who we are as a county. The races are San Diego. In this issue, we celebrate our ties to “where the surf meets the turf ” by overviewing the races’ storied past and promising future. We talk to horse owners and introduce Tranquility Farm, an organization that takes in retired and injured thoroughbreds. And, of course, we bring you the latest in trend and Del Mar fashions. Much has changed in the last 75 years, but much is the same. The Del Mar Races opened in spite of the Great Depression and saw its way through several ups and downs. Similarly, today’s story shows the power of spirit in the face of adversity. And the record crowds entering the gates on Opening Day show one thing: the spirit of San Diego remains the same.

Cutting-Edge Smiles

P

ainful blade-and-suture dental surgery is so last season. Dr. Valentina Obradovic of Smiles by Valentina in La Jolla and Adriatic Dental in San Marcos offers the latest in laser therapy to treat gum disease quickly and effectively. Not only does Dr. Obradovic offer the best in preventative and holistic care, it is equipped with the LANAP protocol, a FDA-cleared Laser Periodontitis Treatment that offers a lesspainful and less-invasive alternative to conventional scalpel and suture-flap surgery. Gum disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis, is a silent bacterial infection that often goes undetected or ignored until severe gum and bone destruction demand attention. In fact, 50 out of every 100 Americans have moderate-to-severe gum disease, but 40 of the 50 don’t even know it. And fewer than two of them will get treated before it’s too late. Dr. Obradovic is intent on ensuring this doesn’t happen to her patients. “We want to help you be proactive in all areas of your oral health to keep your teeth and gums free of tooth decay and periodontal disease,” says Dr. Obradovic, who is one of the first dentists to offer this LANAP protocol technology in San Diego. The magic of this procedure is in its simplicity. Instead of cutting away tissue, this procedure actually regenerates some of the bone and regrowth of the periodontal ligament, encouraging the body to heal itself naturally.

Patients enjoy several benefits of

this breakthrough

technology: • Less Pain: The LANAP protocol helps avoid cutting and stitching of the gums, leading to less post-operative discomfort in most cases. • Fewer Sessions: Procedure requires only one or two sessions with the dentist, with two follow-up visits—much less than conventional surgery. • Quicker Recovery: Patients can say goodbye to prolonged pain, swelling and diet restrictions. Most return to their regular activities immediately following the procedure, which generally requires less than a 24-hour recovery period. Pat Walsh is just one of Dr. Obradovic’s patients who have benefited from this procedure. “Your standard of excellence is evident in the way you match color when supplying a dental prosthesis, or using the new laser treatment to treat gum disease. Your preventative management has saved me several teeth that I may have lost going to a dentist who isn’t on the cutting edge of dentistry. Thank you for your standards of excellence!” says Walsh. Adriatic Dental helps patients save their teeth, preserve their natural smiles and avoid the potentially life-threatening systemic effects of untreated gum disease. Now that’s what we call fashionable. For more info contact:

lose. But Bloom maintains that “whether you are talking about a horse running in a big or a small race, when you see your horse finish first, it’s an amazing feeling.” If winning anywhere is exhilarating, then winning at Del Mar touches on the sublime. “San Diego is a paradise for racing horses,” Bloom says. “You’ve got the best trainers, best jockeys, biggest purses. Del Mar will always be the best racetrack in the country. For most jockeys it’s like a working vacation.” The Del Mar races are by nature much different than other tracks in SoCal. Jon Lindo, local horse owner and handicapper, sums up the differences well. “Del Mar is unique because it is just seven weeks a year in San Diego,” Lindo explains. “With year-round racing in Los Angeles, you lose some of the excitement of going to the races on a day-in, day-out basis.” The brevity of the season lends itself to a more festive environment as well. “Everything stops in San Diego on opening day,” Lindo says. “It really becomes a seven-week party where you run into everyone you know.” Lindo has been owning and racing horses since 1986. Currently, he has eight horses in training with Bill Spawr. Like Bloom, Lindo believes success in thoroughbred ownership is

22

largely contingent on being patient. “Patience” and “being realistic” are his key phrases, which he claims are even more necessary “while the bills are running.” “It doesn’t matter if you have $80,000 invested in a horse and that they can only win, for example, at the $25,000,” he says of managing horses, “Better to win and generate the purse earning than continue to get beat.” In addition to supervising his own stable, Lindo also works as a handicapper for the North County Times. Apparently, handicapping, or predicting the winners, is much more an art than a science. “There’s so much to it,” Lindo says. “You start with simple things like pace, and then figure out who’s going to be in the lead, try and figure out which horses are good on grass and which on turf, and then look at pedigree.” The list of considerations is so long, and the number of confounding variables so high, that handicappers are compelled to manage what to most might seem like an impossible task. But Lindo insists that, in the end, “We’re just trying to figure out when a horse is right for a place.” Like handicapping, horse ownership is also an art, equally blessed and plagued by a series of variables. And that’s what we love most about our yearly horse fever.

Fat in the Fire

Understanding the physiology behind how we store fat is vital to our health. By Dr. Kellee Rutley

S

ummer is in full swing, complete with the season’s poolside parties, outdoor soirees and tropical getaways. But this fun in the sun can strike fear in the hearts of those who dread donning summer’s more revealing attire. Unfortunately, even a glimpse of a bikini-clad mannequin in a store window can make someone fall for a fad diet or weight-loss gimmick out of sheer desperation. It’s no surprise that weight loss is a billion dollar industry. Americans spend more on nutritional supplements, health club memberships and weight loss surgeries than all other countries combined— yet we still have the “fattest” population, and our children are being diagnosed with Type II Diabetes at an alarming rate. So, why are we so overweight? While the word “obese” conjures images of very large individuals, “metabolically obese normal weight subjects” have been described in medical research since the 1990s. This means that the BMI (body mass index) is dead. Having a normal BMI—or a normal height-to-weight ratio—is irrelevant in many cases. Many Americans have a normal

30

BMI, but are still characterized by a higher-than-acceptable body fat-to-lean muscle mass ratio. And this normal weight obesity (NOW) is significantly associated with cardiometabolic dysregulation and a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome, or syndrome X, is a combination of four factors that are strong predictors of serious health risks: abdominal fat, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and high blood glucose levels. A person does not have to exhibit all four factors to be at risk, and none of these factors need be extremely high to be considered present. Understanding the physiology behind how we store fat, how we burn fat and how we maintain weight loss once it has been achieved is vital to our health as individuals. If eating less and exercising more were the answer to the problem, we could all stand and cheer. While exercise is a very important part of maintaining a healthy weight and building lean muscle—the engine that burns calories—Americans have been trying to eat less and exercise their way to weight loss for decades to no avail.

Losing fat rather than lean muscle mass requires us to reduce our sugar intake in order to use fat as energy. For most people who are struggling with extra weight in the form of body fat, the problem is sugar. After a lifetime of eating processed, carbohydrate- and sugar-laden foods, our pancreases are literally exhausted. Insulin is the primary fat storage hormone, and when it is circulating in the blood at high levels, the body will store carbohydrates as fat. Tissues then become resistant to the positive and necessary effects of insulin. Adding insult to injury are the chemicals we consume, unknowingly, that unleash metabolic chaos on our finely-tuned systems. Losing fat rather than lean muscle mass requires us to reduce our sugar intake in order to use fat as energy. If we have plenty of fruit smoothie in the gas tank, the body has no need to go into fat stores. Lean muscle mass must be maintained to avoid “rebounding and regaining weight in the form of fat after it has been shed.

There are techniques and protocols to lose unhealthy fat and maintain lean mass. But if this is offered in the form of a stimulant drug or a pregnancy hormone, beware! There are no magic pills, miracle injections or exotic potions that will give us real and lasting changes in our weight and health. Weight loss should be supervised by a licensed healthcare professional who can monitor vital signs, body composition, health status and the potential need to adjust medications. Any weight loss method should target weight gain at its source, which is insulin resistance. Maintenance should include continued support and monitoring, as well as an exercise and eating plan that make sense. No diet is a vaccine against weight gain, and since most people regain weight after it has been lost, any program which does not offer a solid, whole food-based maintenance plan should be avoided like‌. sugar!

Living Lifestyle Luxury Tranquility Farms

A Second Life

Tranquility Farms offers refuge to retired and injured thoroughbreds.

By Rosalie Cushman

Nestled in a valley between the Tehachapi Mountains and the Mojave Desert sits Tranquility Farm, home to more than 100 thoroughbred racehorses that are either retired or waiting for adoption. The 40 acres of rich grasslands and oak trees serve as transitional space in which the thoroughbreds freely roam. The farm’s beauty is only surpassed by its mission, which is to prevent widespread slaughter that used to be the norm for unwanted racehorses. Day-to-day retirement and adoption efforts are directed by president and thoroughbred advocate, Priscilla Clark, who manages the farm with only two other staff members. There are many reasons a horse might come to Tranquility Farm, Clark explains. “Horses come to us sometimes due to injury that prevents them from competing,” she says. “Or they might just be slow racers—or sometimes they have had a successful race career and it’s just time to retire them. Of course, because the horse population has been over-bred at times, some come to us due to a flooded market.” Clark is passionate about Tranquility Farm’s mission. Coming from a thoroughbred background, Clark’s realization that unwanted horses were being slaughtered galvanized her into action. “I became compelled,” Clark says. “The slaughter was epic in earlier years—four times what it is now—and I felt I had to do something.” Gary Biszantz also felt he had to do something. He established

38

contact with Clark in 1996, discussing how to improve and remedy the plight of unwanted and injured racehorses. In 1998, the two found an abandoned ranch. No stranger to taking action, Biszantz offered to outright purchase the property, which would later become Tranquility Farm, telling Clark, “I’ll just buy it.” “I was floored,” Clark recalls of the property, which Biszantz named the Harry A. Biszantz Memorial Center, after his father. “Besides the initial purchase Biszantz, together with contributors John and Geri Amerman, has contributed thousands of dollars to developing the infrastructure, along with maintaining ongoing care, rehabilitation and retraining efforts for the horses.” Despite these efforts, it’s becoming more and more difficult to place horses in new homes. “It used to be we could place approximately 50 percent of the horses in new homes, but that number has declined,” Clark says. “Even though our adoption fees are modest, it’s expensive to own a horse. In the current economic climate there are just fewer people able to maintain the expenses.” There is also a significant training gap between a thoroughbred and a pleasure horse. “We try to retrain as many horses as we can, but some are just not able to make the bridge from racing to becoming a pleasure horse, though a good number of them can,” says Clark, who has adopted out nearly 500 horses over the years. “Retrained thoroughbreds are still high voltage horses and

they do best with younger, energetic owners,” Clark says. “You’ve got to have a lot of energy for these horses—most do very well with owners having parallel personality and energy levels.” Approximately one quarter of Tranquility Farm’s revenue is contributed by the racing industry itself. Indeed, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club donates a percentage of their proceeds raised from their Annual Charity Day. The remaining 75 percent of the farm’s budget is raised by individual donors, who are pillars of the program, along with other fund-raising activities. Even Biszantz’s daughter, Shannon Biszantz is equally committed, donating 5 percent of her own Real Estate Consulting business’ income to support the farm’s efforts. “We are always eager for fundraising help,” Clark says. “While we have a wonderful donor pool, we are also hopeful that the industry will expand contributions. Still, one of the best ways for horse people to donate to Tranquility Farm is to help us raise more money to support our retired and retrained

thoroughbreds.” Biszantz puts it in even stronger terms, believing now is the time for action, for the racing industry itself to do more. “What we established 15 years ago in Tranquility Farm was intended to be a model for a national effort. Ninety-six percent of proceeds we raise go for actual horse care, with the remaining funds going to administration,” he says. “Jockey clubs, owners, the Breeders Association and racetracks—every segment of the industry—could contribute, maybe between $10 to 20 million, distributing money to accredited retirement farms around the country.” Clark and Biszantz share an enormous sense of purpose and passion to provide the best life for the retired thoroughbred. Extending humane conditions and a second life these beautiful creatures is what Tranquility Farm is all about. If you are interested in adopting a horse or fund-raising on behalf of Tranquility Farm, call 661-823-0307 or visit tranquilityfarmtbs.org.

The Del Mar Races celebrates 75 years of legend and excitement. To help ring in the 75th anniversary of the historic Del Mar Races, we’ve compiled a list of some of the greatest moments in the track’s storied history.

Luxury

By Logan Broyles

DEL MAR RACES TIME LINE

1942 - 1944

1955 An Argentinean filly named Cipria wins a maiden race by a head, paying $263.40 for a $2 winning bet. No horse in the track’s history has ever paid more.

Del Mar shuts down as the United States enters World War II. Initially, the track’s grounds are used for training by the Marines, but are later converted into a manufacturing site for parts to B-17 bombers. When Japan surrenders, President Harry Truman declares August 15 a national holiday, and 20,324 turn out at the track to bet a whopping $958,476, a Del Mar record.

1938 The famous Seabiscuit-Ligaroti race draws 20,000 to the track. Seabiscuit wins by a nose as a radio audience listens on NBC Radio’s first national broadcast of a thoroughbred race.

1956 Johnny Longden becomes the world’s winningest jockey as he registers victory 4,871 on Labor Day. William Lee Shoemaker wins a remarkable 94 races during the meet’s 41-day run, a Del Mar standard that may never be topped.

1954

42

1960 Del Mar unveils its brand-new seveneighths mile turf course with a unique diagonal chute that allows for a mile and one-sixteenth and mile and oneeighth starts. The course is an instant success.

1977

1991 For the inaugural edition of the track’s richest and most prestigious race, John and Betty Mabee’s hometown favorite Best Pal zooms to an impressive tally in the $1-million Pacific Classic as the lone 3-year-old in a powerhouse lineup.

2011

Bing Crosby makes a final visit to the track he founded before passing away later that year. His memory lives on at Del Mar each summer by virtue of lore, legend and his nowfamous rendition of “Where the Turf Meets the Surf.”

1984

Del Mar sets a single-day record for attendance when 46,588 fans pour in sporting fancy hats and a carnivalesque spirit.

South African racing commentator Trevor Denman takes over the microphone on the Del Mar roof. From then on, it’s, “And away they go.”

1985 Del Mar completes an underground tunnel into its infield and fans flock to the center of the track for special events, picnics, Frisbee flings, concerts and close-up views of the thoroughbred action.

2006

2012

On Labor Day, leading rider Victor Espinoza wins seven races on one card, a feat never before accomThe 75th season of the Del Mar plished at the shore oval. Races, including the one and only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest, opens on Wednesday, July 18. And away we go….

Bill Shoemaker surpasses Longden’s mark and becomes the new winningest rider with 6,033 wins.
