PUBLISHER’S LETTER Recognizing that art is best left to the senses of each to behold, our annual Art Issue features an array of artistic expressions. A simple brush stroke, an aperture closing around a panoramic scene—finding something beautiful through mediums that celebrate our capacity to create is revered by the human spirit and something FINE wishes to express with gratitude. FINE would like to recognize the artists, designers, delicate hands, creative minds and inspired individuals that create—to give life to feelings, ideas and emotions that too often escape us unexamined and without understanding. Thank you for giving us time to reflect.
HEATHER AND JOHN WINFIELD
In this issue we discover local talents shaping the San Diego art scene as well as internationally recognized artists “Making Waves” across the globe. Explore museums, attend artistic events and enjoy new shade as we drift slowly into fall. To believe that life imitates that which we personally discover through art, love and passion is perhaps more important than understanding the origins of an artist’s inspiration—to have faith in beauty that shall not waiver in the face of adversity. Creatively,

The art of Anita Lewis embraces the rare use of the classical medium of oils in abstract work, just like the early abstract painters of the mid-century. She identifies strongly with modern art and architecture as well as the classics. Stark linearity seems to dissolve into abstraction, yet there is detail in the obscure. Her work can be described as earthy, textural, and emotive, reminiscent of earthy scenes. There is a freedom to her work, but an underlying structure prevents chaos, pulling the pieces together. Her paintings seem to call out a visual experience of long-yearned memories or emotion from the viewer. Lewis has also been exploring the world of dance, equestrian themes and other abstract figuratives. One of her latest projects involves

Museums for All Ages Kids take advantage of free museum admission in the month of October. Article by Michelle Leonard | All photos used with permission
T
he month of October is calling for a kid-vasion with the return of “Kids Free in October,” presented by Time Warner Cable. The program offers free admission to children 12 and under with a paid adult (limit 2) for nearly 40 museums around San Diego County. Kids Free will be kicking off with a launch event—hosted by the San Diego Museum Council entitled “Museum MashUp”—on Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. The festivities are free to the public and will feature 16 museums offering an abundance of family-friendly activities, including hands-on kid-friendly projects, live music and dance performances, and special guest appearances. In addition to all the family fun, children will receive a free gift. Back for its third year, “Kids Free in October” is presented in partnership with Kids Free in San Diego Month. Last year’s attendees totaled 10,000 and this year it is expected to increase. Throughout the course of the month, families are
encouraged to challenge themselves to visit all 38 museums by being immersed in a wide range of exhibits and experiences such as: • Exploring the deep trenches of the ocean floor and interact with the tide pools at Birch Aquarium. • Making excellent discoveries with hands-on science exhibits for parents and children at Explor-O-Rama at the Ruben H. Fleet Science Center. • Observing the most recent exhibits at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. • Hopping aboard the U.S.S. Midway’s new family audio tour that takes museumgoers on a fun-filled journey through more than 30 locations aboard the enormous aircraft carrier. Along with these exciting happenings, thanks to Time Warner, museums will be hosting free science-based activities on each weekend in October. To take part in any or all of the activities the museums is offering, families will need to download the
free coupon from the San Diego Museum Council website for each museum they want to visit. “Time Warner Cable is proud to bring this experience to children throughout San Diego County,” said Kim Latour, director of community investment for Time Warner Cable Inc., one of the largest national video, high-speed data and voice services. “Kids Free October is a tremendous opportunity that perfectly coincides with our Connect A Million Minds program, a five-year, $100-million cash and inkind philanthropic initiative to help promote education in science, technology, engineering and math. We hope that all will take advantage of this local opportunity to engage the curiosity and imagination of our children.” The collaboration between Time Warner and the San Diego Museum Council is a tremendous opportunity for families, and will bring a part of what the council does—increasing awareness of and attendance to the diverse museums in the [ continued on page 30 ]

The role museums have in children’s lives is a viable one, which makes back-toschool season an ideal time for attending what Kids Free has to offer. It’s the perfect opportunity to develop young minds while working cooperatively with their creativity and imagination. And it’s the answer for parents planning a day out or vacation with the family—a cost-effective day spent with the kids that will give them a chance to learn while having fun. Kids Free offers free deals on more than 100 incentives ranging from welcome amenities at area hotels, transportation, complimentary meals, attraction admission and more helping to plan the ultimate family vacation. Whether soaking up the rays and culture at the California Surf Museum, discovering San Diego’s rich and fascinating history from the San Diego History Center, or wafting through beautiful flourishes and aromas at the botanical gardens, Kids Free has something for everyone in the family. Support for “Kids Free in October,” presented by Time Warner Cable,” is also provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, an independent agency that has awarded more than $4 billion to support artistic excellence, creativity
and innovation to benefit individuals and communities. Further support is supplied by the Commission for Arts and Culture San Diego, an advisory capacity to the mayor and city council that promotes, encourages and increases support for the region’s artistic and cultural assets to integrate arts and culture into community life and showcasing San Diego as an international tourist destination. “Kids Free in October,” presented by Time Warner Cable, will be held the entire month of October. He is responsible for all culinary operations, working closely with the restaurant manager to oversee the kitchen staff and restaurant team members and ensure that this renowned restaurant runs smoothly. “I like to present each dish in a way that highlights the quality, freshness and natural flavors, where the seafood or steak is center stage,” Gale said. “The quality of our food sets us apart from other restaurants in the area.” Prior to becoming executive chef at Eddie V’s, Gale was executive chef at Eddie V’s Fort Worth. Before joining Eddie V’s, Gale served in many different roles while still in Texas, ranging from general manager to executive chef, in many restaurants including Pappastino’s Cantina in Houston; the Chart House in San Antonio, Boudreaux’s Cajun Kitchen in Houston and a multi-venue restaurant operation at Aquarium Landry’s in Houston. His career began at El Chico Restaurant, located in Arkansas, Louisiana and Dallas. Now in its second year, one of La Jolla’s newer establishments is setting a high bar for its neighbors. Eddie V’s has garnered acknowledgements from Bon Appétita and accolades from Wine Spectator, as well as several local awards for the view and food quality. It’s certainly a destination that should not be missed.

under the surface of his internationally
recognized art.
FINE magazine: Were you a good student in school? What was your favorite subject?
FINE: What attracted you to surfing?
Clark Little: I was an okay student. I went to school and attended the classes, but it didn’t really excite me. My best subjects were PE, of course, and math. In some ways, I felt like my best subject was oceanography, which I experienced in the field at the famed surf breaks on the North Shore of Oahu.
Little: It started when I was 4 or 5. My parents got us [Clark and his brother] some surf lessons. Once you experience surfing, not too many other things in life are as interesting and engaging. Where I live on the North Shore, surfing is a sport, as well as a lifestyle.
Photo key: Left photo by Aaron Lloyd of Clark Little preparing to take a photograph on the North Shore of Oahu, HI. Right “Heart” photographed at The Wedge – Newport Beach, CA.
39
FINE: Your fearless process of capturing the movement of the ocean is unconventional. It’s dangerous. Do you think artistic expression is sometimes best suited to a lack of convention? Little: I grew up with “danger” and adrenaline always being a part of the sports that I did. When I started photography it just felt natural to have the same element and level of danger and adrenaline present. I probably approach photography more as a sport. The danger aspect keeps me focused and loose and helps me be creative. When the conditions are extreme, I am laser-focused, yet my brain feels wide open to the present moment.
40
FINE: What is the best part of being a respected artist/ photographer? Little: It’s great to have people appreciate your artwork and be just as excited as I am about it. I am thankful every day to be able to make a living doing what I love. I have been able to travel to Brazil, Japan, Canada, up and down the coast of California, Washington D.C. and all of the main islands in Hawaii because of my photography. To see [my] photography appear in magazines such as National Geographic, to exhibit some images and win an award at the Smithsonian Museum, and to be able to see my shots in Apple stores and ads is wild—it’s wild to see how much has changed in just six years.
FINE: What are you trying to communicate through your photography? Is it emotional? Spiritual? Something else?
FINE: What was the biggest challenge you faced while putting your new book together?
Little: It is many things including emotional and spiritual. What I want people to see is the beauty in nature, especially from a place where they might not otherwise be able to visit themselves. I want to open people’s eyes to a dangerous environment filled with color, shapes and intrigue. I also want people to slow down and examine things carefully. A lot of my shots are captured with passion—my passion for the ocean and especially shorebreak waves—so I want that conveyed too.
Little: It felt like building a house. You are creating something from nothing, so the amount of time and effort is tremendous. So many decisions—so much to consider. Much more than anyone can imagine. Just selecting the images took months.
Photo key: Left Clark Little taking a photograph on the North Shore of Oahu, HI. Middle Top “Dancing Honu” photographed on the North Shore of Oahu, HI. Middle Bottom “Tahiti” photographed at Tahiti, French Polynesia. Right “Twilight” photographed on the North Shore of Oahu, HI. 41
42
FINE: How is the new book an evolution from, “The Shorebreak Art of Clark Little” ? What can people expect to see?
FINE: What are some of the most important lessons art/ photography has taught you throughout your career?
Little: Since the last book was published four years ago, I have done a lot of traveling for exhibits, events and commercial projects. The new book has photographs from many other shore-break locations besides the North Shore of Oahu, including Japan, French Polynesia, California and the main neighbor islands in Hawaii: Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. I have also included some detailed descriptions of certain images. It’s much more in depth than the first book. I have also done more work with my strobe flash and done more experimenting, so the variety feels much greater.
Little: Be in the moment and don’t get too far ahead of yourself. At any moment, you can get that shot. It might be a cloudy day with the wrong winds, and two minutes later the sun pops out and the wind dies. Even days with really small waves, can bring out a magical shot. I never write off any moment. This can be carried over to my life outside photography as well.
Photo key: Above “Malibu Peer” photographed in Malibu, CA. Right “Double Mint” photographed on the North Shore of Oahu, HI.
44
FINE: What has been the most rewarding part of your career?
FINE: What do you hope your art communicates to the future?
Little: The most rewarding part has been seeing my photography spread around the world. Also, the unique opportunities I have been given—I was really excited when I got a spread in National Geographic, the Ocean Photography Award and two pieces on exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum and doing the photography project for Apple in Tahiti.
Little: I just want people to feel the passion that I feel and experience a glimpse of the beauty that I get to surround myself with in the ocean. If people can get inspired to pursue their passion or to find something in their life with passion... that’s what I would hope for.

Nadia Salameh captures the world in her photographs. Article by Natalie Neece | All photos courtesy of Nadia Salameh
W
e’ve all heard that “a picture is worth a thousand words,” and this saying rings true for
the work of world-renowned photographer Nadia Salameh. Known for her exquisite and profound work, Salameh is capturing moments all around the world. “My love for travel and different cultures must be genetically ingrained in me because my father as a young man worked and traveled to different countries,” Salameh explained. Born in a small village near Jerusalem, Salameh moved to America when she was young, growing up in San Francisco before eventually making San Diego her home. “When I first started traveling, I
remember standing someplace amazed by the scenery and wishing I could share what I was seeing with everyone at home,” she said. “This is where photography came to life for me. When I picked up my camera, the connection made sense for me. So I have been shooting travel for many years now. It’s only been in recent years I’ve started showing my travel images.” She first started with wedding photography, but eventually found her passion in travel photography—although she does not limit herself to one genre. “Although I started photographing people first, I also really love photographing landscapes and wildlife so much more than I even imagined,” she explained. “I’ve
always been told its best to pick a specialty and focus on it, but that never sat well with me because I enjoy photography as a whole. I will always be a photographer whether I’m doing it for a living or just for myself.” Ever the jet setter, Salameh has traveled to more than 70 countries, including stops in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. She said she loves to travel to places that are out of her comfort zone and that challenge her both personally and photographically. “Places that reveal to me the challenges that most of the world faces, as well as the value in life’s simplicity through family and tradition,” she said. “Here in the Western world, we think we have so much to teach [ continued on page 50 ]

young man saw that, and he took my hand and said, “Hold on and stay with me,” and proceeded to guide me through this mass of people and chaos for a couple of hours before working our way out and reuniting with my travel mate.” After the ordeal, Salameh was able to talk to the man, whose name was Bhavesh. “It seemed he was there on his own spiritual journey,” she said. “He had such a beautiful soul, and we connected on a deep level. We ended up spending the next couple of days enjoying the festival with Bhavesh and have built this beautiful friendship. To this day we keep in touch. When you travel with an open mind and heart, you have these experiences and build relationships that would never happen otherwise.” One of her favorite moments that she has captured was visiting the Hadzabe, a dwindling ethnic group in Tanzania. “I feel so fortunate to have had many (pictures), but one that stays with me that I love is the portrait of a little boy from the Hadzabe tribe,” she said. “I have that hanging on my wall and see it everyday and it too makes

me smile every time I see his beautiful face.” The boy was initially untrusting of Salameh and the other visitors.
“We spent the day hunting with men, grinding corn with the woman and just laughing and really enjoying our time together,” she recalled. “The woman were very impressed that I could get down on the dirt and grind the corn laying on a stone and using another stone to pound the corn with. They actually draped me with the elderly matriarch’s animal skin to show respect for my efforts. They said they didn’t think I could do it since none of the Western woman have been able to in the past.”
During the visit, Salameh was determined to get the young boy to warm up to her. “As hard as he tried to hold back, I could see a glimpse of a smile here and there,” she said. “After a long and wonderful day, when we were saying our goodbyes, I approached this boy, knelt to his level and put my arms out in hopes he would respond—and he came into my arms for a hug and he finally smiled and his whole face lit up. That moment is always with me.” Salameh has a busy year ahead. She is putting together photographic tours beginning with safaris to Africa, as well as visiting and shooting tribal people. She has also been invited to travel to Uganda and Rwanda in June to photograph gorillas. This November, she will be featured at the Gallery 21 in Balboa Park. Her main vision for viewers is what inspires her. “I have a deep appreciation for different cultures and want to share my love of other cultures through my imagery,” she said. “I’m hoping to create a more peaceful, loving and more tolerant world.”
