Classically Trained Susan Spath brings timeless elegance to Southern California homes. By Meghan Meredith | All design photos courtesy of Reed Kaestner

rends are fleeting, but the classics are an investment in prosperous living. That’s the philosophy that has made Susan Spath a name in luxury interior design. Ageless elegance is the trademark of Spath and her design team at Kern & Co. Whether it’s an extraordinary home, an estate or a commercial project, the pillars of timeless design are what holds up the mantle of casual elegance. As one of the most recognized and renowned designers in her field, Spath offers the best in high-end fine home furnishings and interior design. The pieces she chooses for her clients are often on a grand scale, yet they simultaneously create a feeling of intimacy, comfort and warmth. Immersed in the art of interior design for more than 25 years, Spath’s design philosophy is grounded in the idea of incorporating the beauty of our natural environment inside the home. Like the archetypal adobes of New Mexico, she assimilates the organic exterior into the interior of the home to make it an authentic reflection of the land on which it was built, creating a sanctuary for the spirit and the soul. The team at Kern & Co strives to create spaces in which people want to gather and bask in the warm, comfortable setting. The designs often highlight rich and full-bodied colors, and materials like walnut and pecan, granite, ironwork and brass are featured extensively. Combined together, they create a safe haven from the outside world. Spath’s passion for classic design started at an early age. “As a young girl

I would spend my summers, hours on end, playing and fantasizing at a local furniture store,” she recalled. “To my horror, my mother always loved Early American. My eye has always been drawn to beautiful surroundings.” Spath has traveled to beautiful surroundings—including Casablanca and Marrakesh—and weaves her experiences into a tapestry of eclectic design. Particularly inspired by the architecture of Europe and the Andalusian influence, Spath describes her style as “deconstructed European” updated for large-scale modern homes. “My ideal client is someone who realizes design is not just mere furnishings but an entire lifestyle,” Spath said. “I love to surprise my clients by turning their home into something they could never imagine. Exceptional style and not getting caught up in the trends is how I achieve a timeless design. I pride myself on forging my own path.” This passion infuses all that Spath does. “I don’t consider my career a job—I enjoy it immensely and look forward to coming to work every day,” she explained. “I love being exuberant and fun, I can be found in full swing during consultations and design meetings at my showroom where I hold court with my staff of beautiful and talented interior designers.” Located in the heart of the Cedros Design District in Solana Beach, the Kern & Co showroom is bright and spacious with a bold collection, ranging from light fixtures and artwork to sofas, rugs and loveseats. A plethora of candles adorn coffee tables, creating a feeling of serenity

and relaxation, while the eye is drawn to the soft lines and graceful curves of furniture and accessories. Inspired by Mediterranean influences, the pieces reflect an Old World style equally intimate and inviting. Kern & Co offers complete planning and interior and exterior designs for homes, estates and commercial projects. It services areas such as San Diego, Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar and Laguna Niguel. “Working with many A-list builders and realtors we have become a must for selling high-end luxury properties,” Spath said. “Whether staging a new home for sale or revamping a lived-in property, Kern & Co. has become an industry leader using our expertise in selling properties.” Constantly in action, Spath wholeheartedly welcomes new projects—including her own. “I am currently building a new home, which will be a showcase to display my evolving style,” she said. “Although I do not enjoy moving, I love creating and am excited in having a new canvas to express my design passion.” Celebrating classic beauty has been a lifelong passion for Spath and it shows in her work. So it’s no surprise that her dream house to design—the White House—is also a classic. For more information, call 858-259-7722 or visit kerncodesigns.com

C
olors move us—and this year we have some exciting movement. From the runways of New York and Paris, hot colors are moving into our living spaces in creative forms and shapes. Bold shades of emerald green and burnt orange combine with the pastels like topaz and khaki to give our homes a more intimate and casual flow. Where once we might have filled our homes with large pieces of furniture, we are now trending toward smaller, more intimate pieces within the large open floor plan. It’s a reflection of our desire to feel connected to friends and family in the living room as we work in the kitchen. Here are some of this season’s hottest design trends: Clarity Make a statement and give your home a new, fashionable look with glass furniture. The transparency of the furniture can help to visually open a space and bring in light to interiors. Try replacing a dark, wood coffee table in the living room with a crystal-clear table. See how it creates a more open an edgy space. Golden Age All that glitters is gold, and a few metallic accessories can renew the spirit of luxury. Gold can transform a dated area into a wonderful new feel for you and your family. Try accessorizing with gold by adding a new sofa or customcovered chairs to key spaces. Add throws of varying shapes with hints of gold, green and yellow to a sofa or chairs. Place a gold vase or candleholder on an end table or in the entry. For a more striking look, place a Victorian-style mirror over the entry table to greet guests, and dress the table with fresh flowers.

Don’t let your passion be limited by walls. A designer-contractor can take in the entire project and turn your home into your dream villa. Bright and Light Rich, warm colors transformed your home with royal simplicity in the winter, but it’s time to put aside the dark colors and brighten interiors with light pastel and sandy walls. These colors rejuvenate interiors and suggest a luxurious and bright environment. Look around your home and find the dark areas that need to be brightened and refreshed. Accessorize with pastel and light items or paint your walls. And if you’re lacking inspiration, take a house tour. Keep it Green Vintage pieces lighten up your home with a unique style and help recycle jewels of the past. Antique items are great conversation pieces and can enhance personal style. A great way to add value and interest to your home is by adding

some history to your décor. There are several antique stores in the area, not to mention flea markets and estate sales, so it’s easy to find interesting pieces that can bring a unique touch to your interiors. You will end up with a fabulous piece and a fun story to share with friends over a glass of wine. As the runway changes, so do the trends. One of the best ways to stay ahead of the curve is to choose the right interior designers. If they do it right, they will become a friend for life. And don’t let your design passion be limited by walls. A designer-contractor can take in the entire project and turn your home into your dream villa. So while filling your wardrobe with the latest trends, carefully blend them into your home as well. Adding key pieces year to year will keep your house looking fresh.

European Matters Maggie Bobileff brings Euro-trends to San Diego. By Whitney Butler | Photos provided by Maggie B
M
aggie Bobileff ’s first language is fashion, but she also speaks a Swiss-German dialect from the canton in Switzerland where she was born and raised. “When I was a young girl, I wanted to be a teacher. But I realized, teachers are very straight-headed,” Bobileff said. And it’s true—those who know the fashionista can hardly imagine her electric strut in any other industry. And so it is with fashion, that rules are made to be broken by stylists like Bobileff, who projects an unadulterated vision from her distinctly international perspective.

Maggie B and Mister B clothing boutiques in Rancho Santa Fe are an exclusive wander through the inspired mind of a woman who has rubbed elbows with some of the industry’s most infamous names in couture fashion. She remembers sharing a table in Italy with her favorite designer, Giorgio Armani—recalls the palazzo with Gianni Versace—in her beautiful accent. It brings a smile to her face and unique perspective to her boutiques. More familiar still are her first memories of designing clothes, reconstructing her mother’s old clothing with her sister— snipping and sewing new ideas into fabrics
she would later study at college. For five years, at a Swiss trade school, Bobileff was immersed in design, construction, textiles and retail management—an education unique to her home country and something in which she takes great pride. “Sales is about knowledge, understanding the products, every detail,” she explained. “You should never ask a client, ‘How can I help you?’” This business philosophy worn on her sleeve is impressive, a little intimidating, and a testament to her belief that style is something very personal and shouldn’t be forced. “It’s not about this style, or that style. It’s about a personal
MARCH 2013
upgrade—feeling good about yourself,” she added. In her early twenties, Bobileff was jetsetting around the world to Munich, Milan and other fashion capitals, buying trends that hadn’t yet hit New York Fashion Week. In her mid-twenties, Bobileff had already achieved great success in Switzerland, she was proud of her accomplishments and she was about to have a baby. “When my son was born, the years started to go by really fast. I knew I needed to spend more time with him,” she said. After moving to San Diego 15 years ago, Bobileff opened Mister B, a Euro-inspired
boutique on a mission to help the modern SoCal man appreciate fashion, the joy of luxurious tailoring and the pleasure of looking great. That was seven years ago. Five years later, Bobileff opened Maggie B, the feminine mate to her vision. “The Swiss never save on fashion,” she explained. “The Italians are the same way. In Italy, dinner begins when you start to get dressed.” Bobileff ’s romantic view of fashion is the reason people throughout San Diego call on her to customize their wardrobe, pack for vacations and add a personal touch to any occasion. A Charitable Voice
Steve Lewandowski celebrates 25 years of making a difference. By Chanel Castro | All photos used with permission
I
t all started with a friend and a favor. In 1988, Make-A-Wish Foundation board member Don Bleau approached famed polo announcer Steve Lewandowski with a proposition. Bleau needed an auctioneer for an upcoming charity event, and Lewandowski was more than happy to oblige. It’s been nearly 25 years since, but Lewandowski has made a name for himself as the voice of the San Diego Polo Club, as well as a benefit auctioneer for charities throughout the region. “It’s my niche, and I get more fulfillment out of helping to do good,” he said. “I help people to have fun. When they have fun, they give more and that means the charity can do more good.” Lewandowski, a former polo player, has called more than a thousand matches in Europe, Mexico and the United States. He’s been featured on ESPN and Fox Sports, and has done voiceover work for a number of products and companies. But it’s his work as an auctioneer and master of ceremonies at charity events that have had the biggest impact on San Diego. “He is the consummate professional but, more importantly, he easily engaged the crowd’s interest in our auction items and was very

adept at securing very high bids for the cause,” said Rob LaBreche, president of the Holding Hands Charity, on Lewandowski’s website. “I would highly recommend Steve … (he) has the experience and talent to make your auctions a complete success.” The former Navy officer has a soft spot for military charities. He has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for foundations and charities, is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and has received three certificates of Congressional Recognition. Lewandowski is entering his 23rd season announcing at the polo club, but continues to use his voice for good. “As an event producer, the success of any event takes teamwork,” said Bob Zimmerman, founder and director of We Thank Our Troops, on Lewandowski’s website. “(Steve), a long time friend and Master of Ceremonies, is an incredible asset who comes replete with an outstanding skill as an entertainer and auctioneer. His skills make any event a success from the podium.” For more information, please visit: stevespeakstoyou.com or poloannouncer.com.

n a time when many furniture manufacturers are shipping work overseas, Ferguson Copeland continues to make its product in the United Sates. And if that isn’t unique enough, the company uses handmade finishes—a rarity among today’s mass manufacturers. Two names stand behind the custom finishes combined with contemporary aesthetics: Larry Laslo and Dave Hinckley. The two designers have helped to the brand’s reputation for sculptural beauty and timeless quality. Laslo’s influence on the company is reflected in the inspiration he draws from his natural surroundings, redefining what he calls “livable contemporary.” Hinckley shares a similar aesthetic. “I enjoy taking contemporary shapes back to their original form and placing a spectacular finish on it,” Hinckley said. This look is poised to meet this year’s trends, including a more hybrid style of contemporary and traditional accent pieces,

according to Steve Baumann, a marketing representative for the company. “Look for copper, platinum and silver tones to influence the color palette and finishes,” he said. Founders Darrel Ferguson and Fred Copeland were successful executives who both worked for established furniture companies in the early 1990s. When both were simultaneously absorbed into a large conglomerate, the two escaped the ordinary and decided to leave their corporate identities behind. They founded Ferguson Copeland, Ltd. to design sophisticated and elegant furniture for magnificently livable homes. Based in North Carolina, Ferguson and Copeland has executive experience behind the playful passion of creative design. The two meld nicely in both functionality and beauty—the balance of vision in discerning times.

With every inch, the hand and skill of a thoughtful designer is evident—the alternative shapes and ultra-mod style allude to the home’s functionality without appearing pedestrian. The sophisticated architecture is a product of Fleetwood Joiner and Avalon Architecture, who built the estate in 2000. With five bedrooms, six bathrooms, guest quarters, a lighted tennis court and an eight-car garage, this single-family residence is a standard of luxury in Rancho Santa Fe. Fixed on two acres in one of the most sought after and luxurious residential communities in the country, the estate offers coastal breezes and nearly year-round sunshine to beam through the windows. Recreational activities including horseback riding, polo, golf, tennis and more highlight the community’s active and diverse interests. This home represents both lifestyle and aesthetics, incorporating a distinct point of view within the community of Rancho Santa Fe.

Face time with
Dr. Karam An expert’s personal view on keeping a youthful face.
By Sandra Yacura Photo courtesy of Carmel Valley Plastic Surgery
O
ur face is our most important physical feature. It is, by far, the part of the body that people look at the most. It is a powerful reflection of our self-confidence, and defines the first impression we make on others. I had a better understanding of this after I met Dr. Karam. I spoke to Dr. Karam in his Carmel Valley office, where his comfortable and homelike office matches his caring and kind demeanor. Unlike many cosmetic surgeons, Dr. Karam doesn’t specialize in one type of procedure. Instead, he focuses on one part of the body: the face. He has spent his life studying all of the choices – surgical and nonsurgical – that are available to make faces look better. At the root of his life’s work and his passion are the immediate emotional benefits that people feel after his procedures. “I’ve had people come to my office for minor ‘lunch time’ procedures, and leave with a completely different posture, walk and outlook on life,” said Dr. Karam. “It is a joy to help so many people feel better about themselves.” As Dr. Karam explained to me, when something feels “off ” on our face, whether from genetics, age, accident, or a previous cosmetic procedure, we become preoccupied and self-conscious because of it. Our inability to look past our own facial flaws makes us shy, uncomfortable and awkward, even with the people who love us, and even with the people who never noticed that we had a “flaw.” “In the early days of cosmetic surgery, people were told that they were vain for wanting to change their appearance,” added Karam. “Although cosmetic surgery grows more popular every year, the guilty hangover of those days still remains. Looking our best feels

good! There is nothing wrong with wanting this.” What was most fascinating to me was Dr. Karam’s philosophy on aging. “The days of trying to ‘turn back the clock’ to return your youthful appearance are over,” he said. “Now, we can begin earlier in life, with a wider choice of less dramatic procedures, to keep from looking old in the first place! Your aging face is just like any other problem – the earlier you take care of it, the better the results.” He talks about this new age of cosmetic procedures in his upcoming book, which will be released in a few months. “It all boils down to whether or not something on your face is bothering you,” added Dr. Karam. “It doesn’t matter if other people notice it, or if they tell you that you don’t need to fix it. If this preoccupation is having an impact on your life, then why live with it?” Sandra Yacura is a freelance writer living in San Diego.

“...I knew firsthand what it was like to be in a position where I needed help...” Visionaries perceive the results they’ve established for themselves as accomplished by manifesting their vision until it becomes a reality. Realizing the path he chose to help others and do something about his own eyes was difficult, getting into the most competitive residency training fields in ophthalmology was even more difficult. ‘I was absolutely determined to become so good at laser eye surgery that I could perfect the techniques to fix my own complicated eyes. I knew this was where my future was going to be.’ he says. And it was this very determination and powerful drive that motivated the doctor to become San Diego’s leading LASIK surgeon, proudly heading up an outstanding team of professionals. ‘I believe in San Diego and know for a fact that the many doctors,
professionals and happy patients I’ve returned their vision to over the last 14 years is the reason for my reputation as a surgeon.’ THE PHILANTHROPIST As a result of Dr. Motwani’s compassion for others in need stemming from his own childhood vision difficulties, the doctor became one of the founders of San Diego’s newest charities, ‘Urban Angels’, along with several others focusing the majority of their disparate philanthropic energies on the homeless in the city they call ‘home’. history throughout the menu. A unique dish not seen anywhere in my travels, her open-faced ravioli is presented in vibrant color. Large pasta sheets are stuffed with sea scallops, prawns and herb Brie sauce, folded and accompanied by tomato confit, grilled radicchio and broccolini. This is an extremely rich dish with a creamy texture and complex flavor combinations that can be easily shared. Another one of my Italian favorites is the homemade pappardelle topped with king crab, tarragon sauce and mushroom varietals. Absolutely decadent, it is finished table-side with shaved truffle. Traveling to other regional cuisines on the menu, there are intriguing options for fresh seafood including pineapple-glazed salmon with sweet onion marmalade or sea bass served with a mélange of mushrooms and lemon grass blanc. For tender and flavorful
meats, try the cumin-crusted skirt steak with fingerling potato skins and cheddar cheese. The presentation is simple and straightforward, upstaged by a whole roasted jalapeno, which adds a buzz on the lips. Also not to be missed is the pork short rib dripping with a Butcher’s Brewing Double Shaka IPA barbecue glaze, served with artichoke puree, cocoa nibs and coleslaw. There’s no better way to end a great meal than with the drama of a warm and evocative chocolate dessert paired with a Spanish coffee. The top note in the chocolate pudding cake is the decadent chocolate sauce paired with a touch of berry coulis and a nice dollop of Tahitian vanilla ice gelato. It’s hard to argue the results! t’s recommended that everyone go to the dentist at least two times a year. However, just the thought of sitting in a crowded waiting room and listening to the sound of drill is enough to make most people skip their appointment. At Encinitas Dental Boutique you’ll find that there’s something different happening. From the moment you arrive, the staff is waiting just for you. We practice one patient at a time dentistry, which means that you won’t ever be sitting in a waiting room full of other patients. With 14-years of experience, Dr. Sibaja promotes the latest in “metal free dentistry” which is safer and more effective than traditional methods. The difference continues with Nu Calm, a natural stress and anxiety reliever that allows patients to relax while the doctor works. Along with personalized dedication to each patients best outcome, Dr. Sibajas skills are noteworthy. With training in all aspects of dentistry from general to surgical, Dr Sibaja is skilled to offer all areas of dentistry, including orthodontic, Zirkonium implants, cosmetic dentistry, cancer screening and restoration. His skills also allow him to practice general dentistry including inlays, basic oral health care and much more. Other exclusive services include Botox and Juviderm, all from the comfort of a professional office and staff that takes personalized experiences to the next level.
