he crisp autumn wind sends a shiver of excitement to the soul, indicating that our favorite holidays of the year are fast approaching. I have expectations. Who doesn’t when they travel to a new city? San Francisco had been the center of my conversations for weeks. I had asked nearly everyone what I should do, where I should stay, and what I should eat. The result was an overwhelming number of personal anecdotes that took me north of Sausalito, to a hole-in-the-wall eatery above a laundry mat in China Town. Suffice it to say, after several days of traveling up the coast, I was exhausted and in no mood to entertain such friendly advice. What I really wanted was a cocktail. “Good afternoon, Miss Butler.” The concierge behind a desk sits handsomely in a suit. I laugh uncomfortably, unsure of how he knows my name. In jest, I ask him. “Because I must.” It seems impossible to talk about San Francisco as a locale, a place to be, a place to visit. The City by the Bay and the stories it offers are transcendent, as though existing simultaneously betwixt millions of separate realities. The sum of San Francisco’s metaphysical equation looks like a kaleidoscope. Somewhere out there, Tony Bennet is looking for his heart, an artist paints a picture, a businessman gets ready for work—I find it all incredibly romantic, yet exhausting on my first trip here. The Club level of The Ritz-Carlton is alternatively constant. It provides a welcome sense of order, shelter, and rejuvenation from the bustle of life just a few stories below. I wave politely as I pass the concierge and head straight for the Club Lounge

doused in wonderful afternoon sun. Dozens of brilliantly crafted edibles await, a sommelier is discussing a vintage and pouring wine, a small refrigerator has several bottles of cold beer. In a city where literally anything can happen, it’s nice to know that should I need another glass of Malbec to accompany my smelly plate of fine cheese, I can surely get it, and with a smile. The food service inside this private lounge changes throughout the day: breakfast, lunch, light appetizers before dinner, and evening desserts. It’s complimentary for all Club-level guests and is a wonderful place to mingle with friends, make new acquaintances, and attempt to discuss the endless activities planned for an evening. Inside my room, the calming neutral tones of good taste further relax my mood. The recent renovations where done respectfully to not overshadow the history of Nob Hill, nor discourage the reputation one might expect from The Ritz. White crown molding, classic fixtures, and a deep, very deep, marble bathtub. Proof that contemporary design can coexist with tradition, if one cares to try. Less than 50 square miles define the borders of the secondmost densely populated city in the United States. The busy intersections, lengthy lines at famous attractions, and crowded nightlife can be overwhelming. Therefore, The Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco has all the facilities one might need to exercise or rejuvenate the body or soul, including a fitness center, luxury spa, and personal concierge services. I press my little black dress, step into black stilettos, and head
to the place my soul needed most: Parallel 37. In a city known for its epicurean cuisine, The Ritz-Carlton stands proudly behind Parallel 37 as a dining destination worth noting to travelers and locals alike. While waiting for my company, I enjoy a craft cocktail called 8th Street East. It’s prepared slowly with Hooker’s House Rye, Carpano Antica, Campari and burnt orange. I sip slowly, watching as fading light crawls through orange shades covering the windows. The day is about to end—quite deliciously. Chef de Cuisine Michael Rotondo asks if I have any dietary restrictions before he devises a tasting menu. My response, and recommendation to anyone every in this situation, is complete abandonment. Don’t worry about carbs, gluten, or strange meats. Allow the artist and the team to work, and I swear you will be dazzled. The server opens a bottle of Lanson Rose Champagne to begin the meal, presented with delicate slices of tuna belly over lemon puree. It’s esthetically beautiful. My soul is at peace. The seaweed sorbet that rests over a salad of grilled octopus and garlic melts slowly as I taste Domaine Daulny Sancerre, a classic expression of Sauvignon Blanc from France. In the 4th course, and in true abandonment, I delight in my first taste of sweetbread, prepared alongside game bird from South Africa, and paired with Merry Edwards pinot noir. A final course of antelope and rustic assortment of mushroom and pickled beat is the last savory note,

accompanied by Hendry cabernet sauvignon from Napa Valley. Not to be outdone, pastry chef Andrea Correa presents a deconstructed cherry pie and pistachio crumble. The cherries are in season and burst with each bite. I contemplate the meal in its entirety—California cuisine with unexpected global notes mixed with exciting techniques used to amaze taste and presentation. I leave happy and full, rested and lively after good conversation and extremely professional service. Outside, the white and polished exterior of the luxury hotel hints at a San Francisco I will never know—the architecture belonging to days long since passed, repurposed by the Ritz Carlton to start something brand new. An eager bellboy asks me where I’m headed. And as the door to a black Lincoln Navigator is opened for me, I remember, anything can happen. “Take me somewhere fun.” And off I went.

of the event, the client comes first. The goal is to make sure every client’s needs are handled meticulously, which Jacqueline says is “pleasure-filled and stress-free.” Prior to an event, the client is walked through to make sure their event is just the way they envisioned it. Everything from colors to vocalists can be customized to your own desire. A fairytale wedding becomes reality with Wayne Foster Entertainment. Whether at a beach, a winery, or your favorite venue, the immaculate and sparkling energy of the musicians as you walk into the celebration sets the ambiance for the entire evening. From a contemporary string quartet playing electric strings to a classical string quartet on acoustic strings, the wide range of music can be specified to your taste. As the event progresses, so does the music. Wayne Foster’s musicians specialize in continuously playing music to fit the moment. The vibe of the music changes from the ceremony to cocktail, then on to reception. “When the guests come into the reception it’s upbeat, not high energy dance music that you experience later, not soft background music, but dance-in music that creates the feeling for the celebration,” says Jacqueline. Musicians can perform anything from Frank Sinatra to Bruno Mars. “That’s a big part of what we do,” she says. “The wide variety of music, the authenticity of the music, and the right song at the right time.” Wayne Foster Entertainment focuses on the importance of making sure the client’s entire audience is pleased with the selection of music and has a great time. The company has grown throughout the years. Wayne Foster

Entertainment began with bands but grew to full productions as the company flourished. Jacqueline Foster SHOWDANCE® is a program with a range of different shows and themes that guests can enjoy no matter the size of the event. The concept is theatrical, musical, and visual with an array of colorful costumes, spectacular dancers, and amazing choreography. The guests can be seated to enjoy the performance, or they can dance alongside the performers, as SHOWDANCE® is very interactive. “We find that show elements are much more well received when the guests are able to be up and dancing and having fun as well, not just watching,” says Jacqueline. The performers capture the guest’s attention through their artistic talent. Jacqueline Foster SHOWDANCE® has frequented hotels in Las Vegas. The grand opening for the Aria Hotel had 150 performers and 9 different productions in front of 3,000 guests. Whether it’s The Great Gatsby, Motown, All That Jazz, or even Blurred Lines, no idea or theme is impossible. SHOWDANCE® has covered nearly 60 different show themes, with new ideas constantly emerging. The wide variety of music and entertainment can range from a beautiful violin performance to a thrilling fire-eater. SHOWDANCE® recently produced a corporate function with a spectacular Cabaret performance at Le Grand Hotel in Paris, France. But Wayne Foster doesn’t just focus on entertainment. Wayne and Marin established a foundation that helps the blind with any challenge they may encounter. Aptly called “The Wayne Foster Foundation for the Success of the Blind,” it includes connecting individuals to the right doctors, some of which have helped miraculously cure eye disorders. The focus of the foundation is to help the blind acclimate to life and succeed in any way they can.

They take pride in their work and make sure that every event is unique in its own way. The next time you have a birthday, wedding, or corporate party, count on Wayne Foster Entertainment to make it a celebration you will never forget.

ylvia McKinney has her feet planted firmly in the present. Her focus is in the immediate future, and as a survivor of domestic abuse of over 25 years ago, her past only serves as a deep-seated compassion and motivation to help others with a critical need for self-sufficiency. McKinney’s motto resounds with her humility and grace: “Begin each day with gratitude.” Of Scottish roots, McKinney is the founder and executive director of a non-profit organization called Dress for Success San Diego (DFS). It is one of the 134 worldwide affiliates of the flagship office based out of New York. Fleeing Scotland, she bravely landed in New York. She tried to connect with Nancy Lublin, the creator of Dress for Success New York, but it never manifested. Years later in San Diego, after raising her five children, working a full time job and achieving her master’s degree in Human Services, Lublin happened to be in town. She sought McKinney out and subsequently offered her the San Diego affiliate. McKinney had already been trying to get a similar service off the ground and “felt it had come full circle and that it was the right opportunity.” It was meant to be. DFS promotes economic independence for disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support

and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. It is, in fact, a quest for empowerment and achievement, which has taken the idea of the “power suit” and elevated it to a whole new level. The first step offered in the many-tiered programs available at DFS is an education of the fashion basics needed for the corporate environment, which starts with a private appointment in an inspirational and well-appointed boutique. DFS offers its services as a supportive ally and resource for those experiencing challenges in their career and life advancement. “Dress for Success has helped about 7,500 recipients,” said McKinney. “At no cost to the client, we teach employment preparedness and also important, a promotable skill which helps with job retention.” “Sylvia and my Personal Shopper inspired me from day one,” said Theonisa Davis, a DFS former client. “I walked in[to] the boutique dreading the appointment. I thought that I would have some snooty people turning up their noses and judging me. It turned out to be the complete opposite. They were so nice and accommodating, I wanted to be a part of Dress for Success San Diego. I am now being inspired by the women in the program [and] seeing them grow into homeowners and entrepreneurs.” (continued on page 32)

Every client receives a complete outfit of business attire as she prepares for her job interview; and can return for additional outfits when employed; Sharon (left) and Amber (right) are prepared to enter the workplace with confidence after a “personal shopping” experience at the private Dress for Success San Diego boutique.
“What I learned is that I needed to be true to myself,” Davis added. “My confidence in myself determines how well I will do on a job. Knowledge is power and Dress for Success has been a great tool for me by providing me with information and training. I give back to Dress for Success [by] volunteering as the Professional Women’s Group Coordinator.” DFS offers a “lifeline of services”: Suiting Program – Personal Shopper appointment. Business Attire – clients receive up to a weeks worth of workplace appropriate attire. Professional Women’s Group – a monthly forum for networking, sharing of new experiences and challenges, and education with subject specific (financial literacy, debt counseling, etc.) guest speakers. Women’s Workforce Development Center – Through a grant from Women Give San Diego, this center offers four fully equipped workstations for updating/creating resumes, job searches, personalized career assessment, and online continuing education. Going Places Network by Walmart – Through a grant from Walmart, this program helps unemployed and underemployed DFS clients through weekly training sessions, one-on-one counseling in a supportive environment. DFS operates in a state of the art “Smart Corner” complex in downtown San Diego. This was made possible through a shared commitment and partnership in serving survivors of domestic violence with the San Diego Family Justice Center. This includes easy public transportation by trolley or bus and on-site security. “We have 65 collaborative partners in social services,” McKinney said. “And 82% of our proceeds goes toward our programs, with 18% toward administrative costs---we have one full-time staff member and one part-time staff member. Otherwise, all services and goods are entirely volunteer driven

and donated.” The DFS board members are a who’s who of influential and accomplished people. If McKinney doesn’t inspire you to donate, join, or follow in her footsteps, each board member dedicated to DFS is a solid source of inspiration by virtue of their professional expertise and civic merit. An apropos sign that DFS has served as a valuable contributor to the San Diego community for 15 years, is that they have been selected as the designated beneficiary for the proceeds from Fashion Forward® Leonard Simpson’s 2014, 7th Annual “10 Best Dressed Awards” fundraiser. It would seem that Dress for Success San Diego is The New Black. Supermodel Kelly Emberg has been appointed as Honorary Chair and television and film actress Vanessa Williams is slated to host the event. The theme of this gala is “A Moment in Time” and will be held on November 13, 2014 at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. with a hosted cocktail reception and silent auction. Formal seated dinner at 7:00 pm with a live auction and an 8:00 p.m. Fashion Forward Theatrical Show. Awards ceremony is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. See www.10bestdressedgala2014.eventbrite.com for tickets. When asked who was the first person she shared the exciting news regarding DFS‘s designation, McKinney said, “I was in my office when I received the news from our board member Sara Kooklani---I immediately contacted [Lisa Schalon], our board president. She is always among the first people I call to share significant news that affects our organization.” Most fashion enthusiasts would choose one of Academy Award film actresses, Princess Grace of Monaco or Audrey Hepburn’s movies as inspiration for haute couture and style. McKinney’s choice? “The Color Purple”. It is a deep story rife with unlikely heroes who overcome adversity and cruelty with pursuits of empowerment and hearts of valor. And a “period piece” for the fashionistas.

WORK OUT
How to make workout music work for you. BY ERICA MINER

ears ago we huffed and puffed, all the while eyeing Jane Fonda’s impossibly lithe, spandex-clad form and beaming face. Breathe? We barely could keep up with her. Who had time to breathe? Bursting out with laughter was our only alternative at that point. Comic relief if nothing else. “Working out” has obviously evolved over the decades. In fact, it’s almost become a science in this electronic age of downloads
and i-everything. And the options for choosing the all-important music to fuel our weightlifting, aerobics and cardio have become dizzying. To make some sense out of the diverse musical possibilities for warm ups, cool downs, and everything in between, I sought out opinions from workout mavens and professionals in the field, and trolled the Worldwide Web for popular playlists. Here are my results: San Diego RN Marsha Norris, a self-professed “gym addict,” has a wide range of tastes. She uses love songs for warm ups and “new age yoga-type” music for cool downs. “It depends on my mood or the muscle group I’m working,” she says. “If I’m working on back muscles, it’s something heavy duty like Breaking Benjamin or Linkin

Park. If I’m in a ‘mood’ or stressed out, it’s country music. If it’s a good mood, I’ll play Ariana Grande or Boom Clap.” To keep her in workout mode at work, Norris brings her iPad loaded with iTunes lists such as “Now That’s What I Call a Workout.” Other favorites include groups like Radio Edit and remixes from Cedric Gervais, Smash Mode, or Country Club Martini Crew. “If I’m really stressed, it’s Secret Garden Celtic,” she adds. Alexa Canseco, Zumba® instructor and activities director at Encinitas LA Fitness, picks out “high-energy” music from the choices given to her by the club. Generally speaking, “loud, with heavy bass” is what works for her. She finds Latin music fun to use for the club’s Zumba®, described on the website as “a Latin-inspired, calorie burning dance fitness-party™.” For cycling, she likes “electronic-sounding” music. “For lifting on the floor,” she says, “high-energy, strong beat. And for running, Reggae. I know it sounds kind of weird,” she says, laughing. It sounds great to me. Broadway singer and actress Jessica Vosk says, “I usually listen to the new SIA album while warming up, or Imogen Heap. I’m a huge hip-hop and rock fan when working out. BANG BANG, Aerosmith, Angels and Airwaves, ‘What Would You Do’ by Bastille, anything Beyoncé, Linkin Park, Pink. Cool down, I like to put on Jonatha Brooke. Right now I’m into her album ‘Angel in the House.’” The Internet offers a panoply of playlists for the workout aficionado: The Workout Music site (workoutmusic.com) features a variety of workout music as well as a testimonial from wellknown Fitness Advisor Chris Freytag, and lists music according to bpms. Lower bpms (50-100), geared for general health and weight control, includes music of Carrie Underwood and Katy Perry; the next level (100-120) lists Gipsy Kings, Christina Aguilera and Backstreet Boys. The following level is listed by decade: 60s and 80s Walking Workouts, 90s Alternative Rock Workouts. For high intensity (145-160), suggestions range from Tribal Beats, Cardio BLAST!, Xtreme Cardio, and INTENSE! Workout Mixes. You can download 100 top workout songs (requires Spotify, Facebook or email signup) at Fitness Magazine’s site (fitnessmagazine.com/workout/music). Music for routines, also organized according to body area, includes hip-hop, power-up, dance workout, remixes, yoga and cool-down, strength training, country workout and rock workout songs. Examples: Drunk In Love (Beyoncé, Jay Z); Treasure (Bruno Mars); and Party Up (DMX). Women’s Health Magazine offers “A 45-Minute Cardio Playlist That Feels Like a Party” to “make your cycling workout COUNT”. YouTube and Pandora offer full-length workouts to accompany every taste: Pop, hip-hop power workout, rap strength training, dance cardio, yoga, country fitness, Latin, Classic Rock, Bollywood, Spinning and Weight lifting. According to Flywheel instructor and Flywheel development coordinator, Chris Tracey of Flywheel Sports Stadium Cycling™ Workouts, on the Women’s Health Magazine site (http://www. womenshealthmag.com/fitness/flywheel-playlist), “A big part of why you work so hard is because of the music.” I tend to agree. Just put on your music and go. But whatever you do, don’t forget to breathe.

THE 100 YEAR LIFESTYLE Stress Less, Live More.
B Y D R . D AV I D M E L E N D E Z
F
or many, the holidays initiate a stress response; not over the joys that the holidays bring with friends and loved ones, but everything else involved - the shopping, the planning, and the spending - that’s added into an already busy life. This causes your blood pressure to rise, your pulse to quicken, and anxiety to increase. Understanding what stress is and what it is not is paramount to enjoying the journey ahead. First, stress is not about the tangibles (your job, traffic, kids, marriage, pain, or sickness) as much as it is how your mind and body react and adapt to these tangible common stressors. Your adaptability and appropriate response to stress is determined by how healthy your body and nervous system is functioning. The effects of stress can either be consuming, like water soaking into a dry sponge, or deflected like water rolling off a duck’s back.
The seven most common signs of stress are headaches, sinus and allergies, neck pain and tension in shoulders, digestive disturbances, low back pain, irritability and difficulty sleeping. In fact, 80% of all disease first shows up as one of these common symptoms. Unfortunately, most people either cover up these symptoms with medication, learn to live with them, or deny they exist. If your desire is to stress less and live more with greater health and vitality, then develop a lifestyle that promotes health and vitality for a lifetime. Preparation is power, and the following steps will empower you to perform with less stress and more joy this season and beyond.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS. During the holidays, the incidences of depression and anxiety increases, often because of failed or unrealistic expectations. Advertisers promote ‘Hallmark moments’ and Norman Rockwell scenes of what the holiday experience should be, which often creates a losing situation. Center your expectations on being thankful for what you have. Avoid the Facebook trap of comparison and live your life with an attitude of gratitude.
IT’S BETTER TO GIVE THAN RECEIVE. Having a spirit of charity will give you and your family a sense of wellbeing and thankfulness, producing stress-reducing endorphins. Giving your time, talent, or money can feel great.
MOTION IS LIFE & LIFE IS MOTION. A major dopamine (positive brain chemical) producer and stress reducer is exercise. Regular exercise helps fight off colds and flu, reduce the risk of certain cancers and chronic diseases, reduces stress, and slows the aging process.
DELICACY VS. STAPLE. As the holidays fast approach, you must prepare a plan to avoid the standard American path of over-consuming delicacies like sugar, alcohol, and rich foods. Make the change now with a staple diet of organic whole foods, fruits, and vegetables, providing your body with the ideal raw materials to regenerate healthy cells, tissues, and organs in a body prepared for longevity and health.
UPGRADE THE CIRCUITRY. Stress is a neurological reaction. Past auto accidents, sports injuries, and years of faulty posture and excessive sitting shifts the spine and vertebrae, creating tension, pressure, and interference to nerve signals. Your nerves short-circuit, which reduces your ability to adapt and handle stress. Restoring good posture and spinal alignment resets the neurological switches and upgrades the circuitry of your nervous system, ensuring maximum nerve supply and greater adaptive power to live more and stress less.

his month we are focusing on the sunny beachside city of Carlsbad, California and the wonderful, diverse properties that it has to offer. Carlsbad has some of San Diego County’s most elegant homes, pristine beaches, and the largest collection of LEGOs that San Diego has to offer. From the Carlsbad Seawall to the famous Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch, the City of Carlsbad bursts with beauty at every turn. The neighborhoods of Carlsbad feature homes for every taste. You can find everything from rustic ‘50s cottages to cutting-edge modern mansions. Settle down in a beachside home with views of the ocean from your dining room table. Or land a nice bungalow near one of the city’s many popular parks. There’s something for everyone in Carlsbad, as long as you like cool ocean breezes and a lush, green landscape. The education in Carlsbad is high quality, and most schools are served by the Carlsbad Unified School District. This city boasts some of the best schools in San Diego County, with many ranked at a 10/10 from greatschool.org, including Aviara Oaks Elementary School, Carlsbad Seaside Academy, Carrillo Elementary School, and more. There’s so much to do in the “Village by the Sea” that its

residents will rarely be bored. Watch a movie on the big screen in luxury at Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas. Experience LEGOLAND - the first LEGOLAND built in the United States - complete with roller coasters, LEGO activities, and even a water park. Learn to paddle board or jet ski at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Personally, I’d take the 4-mile walk along the Carlsbad Seawall and enjoy the sounds of crashing waves and visit the tasty restaurants along the route. The businesses that call Carlsbad their home help stimulate the local economy. Some notable employers are Life Technologies Corporation, TaylorMade-Adidas Golf Company, Viasat, Callaway Golf, and the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. These top-grossing businesses not only supply a great number of jobs to the community, but also pump money into the local economy. Shopping in this city has its own charm. Carlsbad Village has a wonderful selection of surf shops, jewelry stores, wineries, an art & antique mall, and much more. Ranked the 10th best city in California by streetadvisor.com, Carlsbad has it all. From scenic views of the ocean from your living room to spacious parks and beaches, Carlsbad is one of San Diego’s proudest cities. It’s so easy to fall in love with Carlsbad that most who move here, stay here.

BUILDING A SMARTER HOME THE LATEST TECH TO CONTROL YOUR HOME. BY BRENT HUMPHERYS At no time in history have people been more connected than the present. In 2013, it was estimated that 50% of all Americans carried smartphones, yet in 2014, that number has grown to 65% – nearly two-thirds of all Americans. Social media has become the new norm, with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and many other sites serving as online water coolers where people are connecting with people like never before. But as technology has evolved, another new trend has also exploded with exponential growth: people are now connecting with things – and the list of things may surprise you.
THE INTERNET IS NOW “THE INTERNET OF THINGS” The internet has essentially reached ubiquity. People are finding entirely new ways to connect. We used to think of the internet as a trip to the web browser and typing in a website, but now devices are doing this for us, albeit invisibly. Manufacturers are developing apps for smartphones and iPads to interact with and control entertainment devices such as a DVD player or the household DVR. A quick trip to a big box retailer will reveal all kinds of appliances and entertainment systems advertising “WiFi enabled” or using the word “Smart.” What all this boils down to is that devices are ready to detect your home’s networking connectivity and log on right along with you.

SECURITY For years, home security systems have offered us a primitive picture of home automation. Windows, doors, carbon monoxide and smoke detectors throughout a home are accessible and given instruction via a security panel, usually located in the master bedroom and just inside a home’s entrance. But by using the home’s internet connection, the features and functionality are now extended to our devices. App developers have given birth to new ways we would want these systems to communicate with us. Instead of merely sounding a 120dB siren to deter a burglar, a system can now send a text message with details of an alarm. Companies such as Time Warner Cable are offering “The IntelligentHome” over the cables which already connect the company to the homes of its customers. Video cameras now offer the consumer the ability to view zones of a home through a smartphone or tablet. Alarm companies have even connected logical activities which instruct each other to start or stop. If an alarm is triggered, the central device knows which zone has been violated and activates the appropriate security camera to capture and store video. An intruder can be caught on camera and the system can send links to the video useful to law enforcement.
But security doesn’t necessarily refer exclusively to the security system. It can mean that actions we’ve overlooked can be corrected remotely. If you forgot to lock the door when you left for work, you no longer need to get into the car and dash home with the keys. Simply click on an app and view a live depiction of your home and receive a highlighted padlock icon of the unlocked door. Actions as simple and effortless as swiping a padlock icon can lock that door. And newer systems are available which actually monitor the doors, locking them for you after a programmable waiting period and sending notifications that the home is now secure.
ENERGY SAVINGS Perhaps one of the most compelling reasons for jumping on the smart home bandwagon is in energy savings. Energy consumption pundits agree: the two most common ways to waste energy is improperly heating or cooling a home and forgetting to turn a device off or adjust the thermostat before one leaves the home. By connecting a home’s thermostat to the Internet of Things, a user is able to access the thermostat from virtually anywhere. Recently, the startup company “Nest” developed an internet-enabled thermostat. This quickly caught
Convenience appears to be the undisputed “shining star” 54

Google’s attention and Google was so intrigued that they acquired the company for a whopping $3.2 Billion. Nest suggests that the way homeowners arrive home and turn on the heating or air is inefficient and that the ability to gradually heat or cool the home beforehand can save them 20% on their utilities. Additional benefits include being able to access the thermostat and have the home at just the right temperature upon arriving home from work, as well as turning off the heat or A/C you may have inadvertently left on.
and displays you can speak to. If you say what you’d like to cook, the system pulls from some 30,000 stored recipes and will guide you through each step, providing some enviable assistance along the way. The Kochbot can instruct the faucet to dispense the exact amount of water a recipe calls for, can activate the cooktop and monitor temperature, and instruct you step by step what’s to happen next. And as you’d expect, it will turn everything off for you when you’ve whipped up that incredible culinary delicacy.
CONVENIENCE
ENTERTAINMENT
Convenience appears to be the undisputed “shining star” award winner for reasons to automate one’s home. This summer I had the pleasure of selling a luxurious estate residence in Carlsbad with some enviable home automation. At nearly 7,000 square feet, this home had no shortage of things to control. Whether it was the computerized toilet, the hidden mechanical shades which could be raised or lowered at the push of a button, or the resort-style pool with wireless device to check on pool and spa temperature and control other features, this home was truly remarkable. When I visited my clients after they’d spent a month in the home and asked what they appreciated the most, they told me it was the convenience of having automated lighting. The eleven garages were controllable with nice LCD screens which displayed temperature and other data, but the killer app, if you will, was not having to roam the property and make sure that every light had been turned off. And whether the home’s a luxury estate or a humble condominium, an automated home can know when to turn on the lights by time of day or if triggered by an event. For example, systems can know to turn on the lights to a hall or kitchen when the garage door is raised. While on the subject of convenience, could there be a better place to automate than the kitchen? LG’s Smart ThinQ Refrigerator has a smart food system manager that allows customers to input and track food kept in their refrigerator. The home owner can check expiration dates via the LCD panel or on the app on their smartphone, so even if you are at the store you know what you have in your refrigerator at home. Meal planning is also made easier through a built-in recipe bank. The LCD panel and app can give menu and recipe recommendations based on what is currently in your fridge. For those who need to be on the cutting edge of tech, you may be interested in knowing that the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence has developed an automated kitchen called Kochbot with a central computer
Entertainment is another key area which is attracting smart home users and provides a reason to adopt new technology. Whether it’s distributing audio throughout the home, tapping a central media server to direct specific music to any connected room, or enabling one’s home entertainment systems can be very rewarding, especially when entertaining guests. The ability from, say, an iPad to adjust the climate, dim or brighten the lights, raise or lower mechanical shades and access entertainment media such as movies or stream programming have all come to the iPad and other smart devices in a single, graphical interface. Home automation has become a fast-growing trend with explosive, widespread adoption, thanks to the ubiquity of home internet connectivity and reduced cost from no longer needing to run expensive cabling. Nearly all consumers are carrying smartphones or an iOS device or tablet whose apps help us interact on the Internet of Things. Key benefits of smart-enabling our homes include security, energy savings, convenience and entertainment, and the number of choices continues to grow as costs are coming down.

Going the Extra Mile
DEL MAR THOROUGHBRED CLUB EXTENDS ITS SEASON.
T
o every end there is a new beginning, and while many are saddened by the closing of Hollywood Park in Los Angeles, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is excited to have inherited most of the scheduled races right here “where the turf meets the surf.” Set your calendars for November 7th through the 30th, race fans, because for the first time ever, there will be continued excitement at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club as the track gets set for a newly extended season of the running of the ponies. Add to the start of your holiday season by marking these exciting dates to your calendar and start practicing your Charleston moves now, because you are set for 23 days of racing, concerts and all that the Del Mar Racetrack has to offer. Glitz and glamour will be taken one step further as the Bing Crosby season opens with a Gatsby-style soiree to pay homage to the man who opened the track back in the 1937 with Pat O’Brien and friends. If you love the big fabulous hats and swanky attire of the opening day, you’re going to be dazzled by the big bang prepared for the opening of this newly extended season. Starting at 11 AM, the ponies will be out from Thursday through Sunday, and races start at 12:30 PM on weekdays and 12 PM on weekends (with the exception of Thanksgiving Day). The track will be closed Monday through Wednesday. If you can make it to opening day on November 7th, start getting your Old Hollywood gear ready now, as there will be awards for Best Celebrity Look-Alike and Best Celebrity Couple at the “Old Hollywood Fashion” contest.

Watching the races without summer crowds and heat combined with a swell 1930’s style are reasons enough to add this extended season to your fall calendar, but it is the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, so of course there’s more. Get ready to take those dance moves to the track, as a reggae festival featuring Iration will take the stage on November 15th and alternative rock band, CAKE, will perform on the 29th for a final hurrah to this very first extended season. Adding even more fun, be prepared for “Movember” events (start thinking about those moustaches fellas), food truck and beer festivals, giveaways such as t-shirts and towels and weekend family fun days where kids under 17 get in for free. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is not only adding an extended season, but has all kinds of new excitement going on, which can be shown by the recent nomination to host the international event of thoroughbred racing held to the highest prestige world over. This event is known as the Breeders’ Cup and will be held in Del Mar in 2017. Another event that is not to be missed, but more to come on that later. For now, raise your glasses for a toast, cats and dames, for it’s a season of firsts at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. As Crosby so famously sang, “I count my blessings instead of sheep” and there’s certainly blessings to be counted here. It’s time to celebrate! JUNIPER AND IVY Bring your family to Juniper & Ivy, a modernist American restaurant set in a converted 1920s sawtooth warehouse located on the outskirts of San Diego’s Little Italy. The Juniper and Ivy kitchen is helmed by Celebrity Chef Richard Blais, winner of Bravo’s Top Chef All-Stars and successful restaurateur, cookbook author, and television personality. Dining areas feature natural hickory-stained tabletops, elevated leather booth spaces and white lacquered tables, and an outdoor patio offers al fresco dining year-round. A large party of up to fifty can book a private dining room that overlooks the bar and exposed floor-toceiling wine wall. Located on the main level, the semi-private dining room looks out to the open-concept kitchen and seats up to sixty guests. The daily, yet evolving menu is based on the chef’s ever-changing inspiration and culinary vision, specifically highlighting the region’s bountiful and fresh local produce and presenting guests with unexpected iterations on the classics. Divided into several categories, the menu includes snacks, raw, toast, and pasta in addition to plates - both small and large as well as dessert. Additionally, a 4x4 four-course tasting menu, comprised of four small bites and four small plates, is available with an optional wine pairing. When I asked Blais where he plans to go from here, he explained, “I’m busy working on another new cookbook and have plans for a second San Diego restaurant as well as more food TV shows.” (www.juniperandivy.com)

CASA SOL Y MAR Well-known restaurateur and Casa Sol y Mar owner Diane Powers wanted to capture the spirit of the Mexican culture in all facets, including food and authentic flavors with a contemporary twist. From the painted walls and hand-woven Oaxacan fabrics, to the art and accessories on the wall made by contemporary Mexican craftsmen, she also wanted to have the interior depict the color and artistry of Mexico. The entire family can enjoy the healthy menu selections at Casa Sol y Mar. Nearly everything on the menu is fresh and made from scratch, including the salsas and tortillas. “We have many vegetarian and gluten-free selections, as well as a new healthy creations menu,” says Powers. “We’re constantly working on healthy items with tons of flavors, made with ingredients found in Mexico.” In addition to their deliciously appealing entrée salads and vegetarian selections, they’ve recently introduced a new healthy creations menu, which has six new and flavorful entrees, all under 650 calories, including several gluten-free options. Casa Sol y Mar has contemporary and upscale environment, boasting a beautiful patio and outdoor dining. “We want people to feel like they’ve taken a trip to Mexico when they come here,” Powers says. “We’ve done our best to make the restaurant appealing to everyone!” (www.casasolymar.com)

WINE OF THE MONTH
BERNARDO WINERY
T
he arid mediterranean climate of San Diego with cool pacific breezes is perfectly suited for the Syrah grape where the ripe fruit of this dark skinned beauty really represents. The recently released 2012 Bernardo Estate ll Mulino Vineyard Syrah has robust notes of Dark cherry and blackberry against a backdrop of earthy leathery notes. It’s round, sexy and full of fruit while bold enough to stand up alongside some serious Winter dishes. Barbecued meats with a smoky char pair nicely with Syrah, as do lamb, venison and game birds. For the vegetarian, a nice hearty stew will pair well, as well as dishes with olives or pungent herbs. The ll Mulino Syrah grown on decomposed granite, especially brings out the floral notes which compared to Bernardo Winery’s recently released Sunfresh Vineyards Syrah which has a richer fruit forward profile. Both are exceptional Syrahs in their own right, from different vineyards and delightful to taste side by side. Thats the nature of Syrah, the terrior defines the character of the grape and it can vary from vineyard to vineyard, even if its a few miles away. The Bernardo Winery primarily produces Rhone style red wines that suit the varied micro-climates of San Diego. Though you will find Cabernet and Merlot amongst the ranks of reds, grapes such as Syrah, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Sangiovese are far more suited for the dry San Diego climate and an interesting diversion from the California norm. The Bernardo winery is located in North county San Diego in Rancho Bernardo just off the 1-15 freeway. Owned and operated by the Rizzo family since 1927, the 125 year old winery is still producing wines in the same european tradition though the old redwood vats have long been retired with modern winery equipment. The winery is an oasis of old world meets new, with rustic old California architecture, beautiful gardens and century old olive trees. Besides wine tasting, visitors can peruse the unique winery village shops and art galleries as well as enjoy a relaxing lunch at the cafe or espresso at the coffee shop. The three main special event venues are available year round for weddings parties and corporate events from 3-300. www.bernardowinery.com

Multi-millionaire Arthur Whitney has been murdered at his own birthday party, and his killer could be any one of the guests. But this is no ordinary murder mystery. Murder for Two is an irrepressibly wacky tour-deforce musical that NY1 dubbed “a must-see 90-minute jolt of caffeinated creativity!”

FROM POLLOCK TO BEETHOVEN, THE “RIGHT STUFF” Interview with Actor Ed Harris. BY ERICA MINER

dward Allen Harris’s journey has taken him from a childhood in New Jersey to acting studies in Oklahoma, and eventually to Broadway and Hollywood where his name evokes an instantly recognizable acting icon with an impressive list of accomplishments. Since his breakthrough performance, playing astronaut John Glenn in 1983’s “The Right Stuff,” the award-winning actor and director has been much praised in Hollywood for his portrayals of famous historical figures, as well as being awarded an Obie for his work on the New York stage. His inspirational 2003 football film, “Radio,” in which he starred and collaborated with Director Mike Tollin, was screened at the La Costa Film Festival. I was fortunate to grab a few moments to speak one-on-one with Harris before the screening. inspirational 2003 football film, “Radio,” in which he starred and collaborated with Director Mike Tollin, was screened at the Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas in Carlsbad for the La Costa Film Festival. I was fortunate to grab a few moments to speak one-on-one with Harris before the screening. Being a classical musician, I was most curious about his turn as the title character in “Copying Beethoven,” his collaboration with Polish director Agnieszka Holland. He was intrigued at my bringing up that film, which he felt had had disappointing distribution in the US. He also agreed with me about how courageous it was of Holland to highlight some of Beethoven’s lesser-known works in addition to the ubiquitous Ninth Symphony, which, in a pivotal scene, Harris was required to conduct. “Learning to conduct was very tricky,” he said. “It took eleven months of study. And I felt I should also learn to play the violin, at least somewhat. That was hard.” When, halfjokingly, I offered to coach him in some finer points of violin playing should he ever have that need for another film, he laughed. “I don’t plan to do that again.”
I asked him if he had plans to tackle other roles as musicians. “No,” he said, “Beethoven was difficult to play.” Nonetheless, he holds enormous respect for Agnieszka Holland, with whom he worked on two other films: “To Kill A Priest” (1989), and “The Third Miracle” (1999). Harris praised colleague Tollin, his director for Radio, and spoke of their close friendship. He elaborated on that at the Q&A after the screening. Though Tollin now focuses mostly on documentaries, Harris expressed his wish that Tollin would someday go back to making narrative films. “I would work with him in a heartbeat,” Harris said of the Camie (Character And Morality In Entertainment) Award-winning Radio director. Tollin, too, was full of admiration for Harris. “Ed sets the best possible atmosphere for the narrative,” Tollin said. “Working with him is a huge challenge. On the set he always does his optimum best for the film.” Harris, who reacted with modesty to Tollin’s praise of his acting chops, then demonstrated his keen sense of humor. “I would have preferred to be a football player,” joked Harris, who was a star athlete in high school and played football at Columbia University. Harris clearly displays his love for the game in the uplifting “Radio.” “Coach Jones is still watching Radio’s back,” Harris said, adding that James Robert Kennedy, the real person on whom Cuba Gooding Jr.’s character is based, is now in his 60s and going strong. As a final question, an attendee asked Harris which of his many roles was the most challenging. Without hesitation he replied, “Beethoven.” Co-founder Michael Callihan presented Harris with LCFF’s first Legacy Award and a custom golf bag. Harris admits to have been lacking as of late in that sport but said, smiling, “I guess I’ll have to go back to it now.” His final advice was passionately put to the audience. “Never give up,” he said. Harris’s appearance and honoring at LCFF is also a tribute to Callihan and wife Ruby, both of whom have worked tirelessly and devotedly to bring a first-class event to Carlsbad. They have succeeded immensely: every event, from screening to celebration, has been impeccably produced. Still in the midst of this year’s event, one can’t help but look forward to Festival #3 next year. www.lacostafilmfestival.org.

THE HUNCHBACK IS BACK Interview with director of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” Scott Schwartz. BY BRANDI LACY
I
n the short time I was able to sit with director Scott Schwartz and discuss his newest project, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” it was extremely clear that there is a great deal of passion surrounding this show. This is not surprising considering the all-star creative team featuring book writer Peter Parnell (The West Wing), set designer Alexander Dodge (Present Laughter), Alan Menken (Newsies) on music, and Stephen Schwartz (Wicked) on lyrics. It is inspiring to watch a director light up whilst discussing his show, and Schwartz exudes pure, unadulterated joy when he speaks about “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” His excitement for the show is contagious. I found myself smiling from ear to ear as I heard him talk about his love for the material, his creative team, and his cast. It is apparent that there is something magical happening at the La Jolla Playhouse. Having worked for the playhouse before, Schwartz is excited to be back. “Its such an amazing place and the staff is incredibly supportive.” As he says this, he is handed a bottle of water from one of the staff. The overall feeling at the Playhouse is that of support and excitement. The woman at the front desk is also clearly passionate about this show. It is well known that the La Jolla Playhouse produces Broadway-worthy shows. This leaves one to wonder, is there a push to take Hunchback to Broadway? Sorry Broadway babies. Your only chance to see the show will be October 26 – December 14 at the La Jolla Playhouse and March 4 – 29 at Papermill Playhouse. “Our intention - and certainly Disney’s intention - is to do the best show that we can and present the work as fully and honestly and as richly as possible. There is currently no plan past Papermill for this show.” The Disney film takes liberties from Victor Hugo’s original story of the bell ringer, Quasimodo. Major differences include cutting two deaths in favor of a happy ending. The production that ran in Germany, however, took a darker approach to the musical. Will this new production keep things light? Or will Hugo’s tragedy be fully recognized? “We’ve built on the German production,” says Schwartz. “We’ve expanded on that material.” New songs have been written for this version of the show, there are songs from the German production and one new song from an original television movie. The idea of the gargoyles is gone, and with them, their comedy. This is an idea Schwartz seems excited about. “Its almost as if Notre Dame itself talks to [Quasimodo],” says Schwartz. There are ten songs in the first act alone, and Act Two has five or six songs. “I love this score, and I feel one of the main reasons all of us - the actors, myself, the other artists working on the show - were attracted to this show.” Schwartz smiles and looks to the ceiling as he searches for a way to describe the music. “It’s
80

almost operatic in scope.” Schwartz’s favorite numbers, apart from what he is working on for the day, include a new song, “Made of Stone,” a song for Quasimodo that was originally in the German production. Another additional song, “Topsy Turvy,” has turned into a gigantic musicalized frame for the feast of fools. Another exciting new development for this show is the addition of a thirty-two-person choir. Local choir, Sacra/Profana, will be appearing on stage at the La Jolla Playhouse and will be lending their voices in commentary to the action of the show. It was at this point that I really saw Schwartz begin to get excited because the onstage choir was one of his original ideas that came to fruition and made everyone on his team excited. There was a workshop in January done in New York where Schwartz and his cast began to put everything together. The four principle actors, Michael Arden, Patrick Page, Ciara Rene, and Andrew Samonsky, have been with the show since the workshop, and one of Schwartz’s favorite parts of the process has been working with these extraordinary actors. “I am so enjoying working with the actors,” he says. “They are such a fine company.” Schwartz and his seventeen-person cast have been working extremely hard to “find the truth and the humanity and the depth and complexity of these people.” Schwartz pauses and smiles. “It has been a wonderful process.” Parents be warned, unlike the 1996 animated film, this show is not for young children. It is suggested as a twelve and older show, mainly for the dark content. “What we’ve really tried to do with this adaptation is really honor the novel as well as the film,” Schwartz says. There are several different layers to each character, song, and scene. Schwartz is striving to truly honor humanity in all their mysteries. “Nobody in this show is all good or all bad. Nobody is a hero or really a villain... All the characters have moments of light and moments of darkness.” It’s at this point that Schwartz takes another brief pause and a smile crosses his face again. “Its one of the things that I so love about the musical is that it tries to honor the complexities of Hugo’s novel.” For those of you concerned that the show might be too dark, never fear. I have been assured by Schwartz that, “It’s gonna be a lot of fun, the score is beautiful... it’ll be a really fun, wild ride.” Having to tear myself away from the interview in order to let Schwartz get back to his fight choreographer, I had to ask one final question. What is the heart of this show? “Its about all of us, and about the fact that in all of us there are things we’re not comfortable with,” he says, “and there are things that make us feel ashamed or like an outsider, and there’s also the way we relate to things in the world that scare us, and I think the explanation of our hearts and the way we incorporate things into our hearts is really at the core.” The Hunchback of Notre Dame opens in the Mendell Weiss Theatre on October 26 and runs through December 14, 2014. GET ‘EM BEFORE THE FAT LADY SINGS BY BOB MOREY
I
hope you all survived the whirlwind month of October. There was a vast variation of great shows to see and that fast-paced exciting run of events continues through this month with no slowing down. I started the “FINE Magazine 31 Day Challenge” in October, and by the time you read this I will have seen the “Blue Man Group,” “The Royale,” “Jersey Boys,” & “The Hunchback of Norte Dame” already. A big thanks to all of you who have posted to our Facebook page with the shows you went to throughout October, and perhaps you will continue to do so this month. So, let’s take a brief look at what November holds in store for us. “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” has drawn such a strong demand for advanced ticket sales that in late September the run was extended through December 14th. “Wicked” blows back into town November 12th through December 7th, and like the rest of the nation it seems San Diegans can’t get enough of that witchy show. Both of these shows are selling out at a rapid rate. Over at the Lyceum, Sam Woodhouse sits in the director’s chair once again for the San Diego Rep’s staging of Greg Kalleres’s racial comedy, “Honky,” running from November 8th through December 7th. Our friends at the Old Globe are giving us a true treat by offering a very seldom-staged Shakespeare production of “Pericles, Prince of Tyre” with a very limited run from just November 15th through the 23rd. Also opening at the Globe on the 15th is their annual production of “How The Grinch Stole Christmas.” Make sure to get your kids out to see this seasonal favorite. The San Diego Symphony is running another full slate this month with a line-up that you will have to check their website to see it all. Sundays - for the most part - have two different shows; one in the afternoon and another in the evening. Highlights for the month are the return of the Fox Family Film Series on November 2nd with a screening of the 1920 classic, “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligri” with Russ Peck providing the score on the mighty Fox Symphony Theatre Organ. Not to be missed from the 21st through the 23rd, Conductor Jahja Ling take up the baton for a night of Mahler and Tchaikovsky. This will be the first time Mahler’s rarely-performed 80-minute epic 7th Symphony will be performed in Southern California. Tickets for most of these shows above will sale out early, so as the saying goes, get’em before the fat lady sings. As always, please see our Events & Calendar section on page 18 to see more listings. For an extended list of events on a day-by-day basis, you can visit our website at finesd.com. And of course, enjoy the show.
