EDITOR’S LETTER
O
nce a year, FINE magazine rolls the red carpet out for the fellas—the men that inspire us personally, through the good times and the bad. Walt Whitman said, “Produce great men, the rest follows.” In this issue, we follow a handful of inspiring men from San Diego, peruse men’s fashion on El Paseo, the runway and in flight. Moreover, it wouldn’t be a men’s issue unless we also recognized a few powerful and influential women. Get an inside look at businessmen and women from San Diego who have persevered through adversity and developed successful enterprise in a variety of industries. In particular, I am excited to introduce FINE magazine’s High-Profile Attorney Section—a look at the men and women who serve the law and the people of San Diego. This one’s for the men,

he Club Med Valmorel offers families a luxury, “5-trident” vacation to the Savoie region of the French Alps. Exciting activities await like ski lessons for all ages, snowshoeing, sled rides, relaxing spa treatments, and upscale bars and lounges. Club Med has a City Stops Program, where travelers can make the most of an exciting urban adventure on the way or on return from their Club Med stay, and flights, hotels and transfers are all taken care of so vacationers can relax and discover a new city. Just in time for the 2014/2015 ski season, Paris has been included as a new stopover city. It’s time to plan a luxury family trip to Paris combined with an unforgettable experience in the French Alps! Nestled in the French Alps, the Club Med Valmorel offers multiple bedroom luxury Chalet-Apartments, complete with private butler and a personal chef. It is also the first environmentally friendly ski resort in France with the High Environmental Quality certification. For winter sports enthusiasts, downhill skiing and snowboarding lessons are plentiful with 95 miles of ski slopes waiting to be navigated. There are a total of 85 slopes including 17 red and eight black slopes located between 3,986 ft. and 7,814 ft. altitude, which is a comfortable elevation for children. According to one ski instructor, Sebastien Lange, “French ski instructors have to train for 5-8 years in order to be able to teach”. This means that your ski instructor will be giving you and your family valuable lessons from the best trained ski and snowboard experts in the world. Included in the package are daily group lessons by instructors, where groups can be as small as 4 people (I was in a group with advanced beginners with only 4 students). You are able

to receive personalized treatment, and the kids are even grouped according to their skill level. When you are ready to pull the kids out of the ski clubs and their private lessons, take part in some of the family activities available at Club Med Valmorel. Don’t miss the Snake Gliss bob-luge excursion, where up to ten people are connected to each other via sleds and are driven down the slopes attached to one another. Evening entertainment and shows like cabaret night or acrobatic shows are great for children and adults. Having a car is not a necessity as there are complimentary shuttles that take you into the village. At the Valmorel Village, share a le Gateau de Savoie (French specialty dessert) or visit one of the souvenir shops for a keepsake. The all-inclusive resort offers luxury amenities like the Club Med Spa by Carita and premium bar lounges put adults at ease. Relax at the Carita Spa with a treatment after a long day of skiing and family time, located conveniently adjacent to the ski lockers. The hammam will help sweat out impurities, and the tasty Moroccan tea is a perfect complement to the relaxation room with a view of the mountains. After the kids are asleep, take your mate to the lobby for a drink at the bar or pop a premium champagne bottle at the Bar de la Tour. As you relax by the fireplace in the lounge, you will wonder, “How did it become so easy to pair a luxury escape with unforgettable family time?”

BORN TO PLAY
HAWAIIAN TRANSPLANT ENCOURAGES SAN DIEGANS TO GET IN THE SADDLE.
There isn’t much Hawaiian polo professional, Kimo Huddleston, hasn’t tried. From high school until the age of 35, Kimo played semi-professional football. In 1998, a national motorcycle magazine featured Kimo and his one-of-a-kind soft-tail Harley Motorcycle across a 6-page spread. He also participated in Hawaiian rodeos throughout his life, competing in double mugging steer roping, calf roping, and steer wrestling. But his love for polo has been in Kimo’s island blood since the age of 12. Kimo began his polo career at a young age in Calgary, Canada, and has stuck with the sport ever since. He has played with two Royal Families, and held a 6-goal handicap for 10 years—which is quite impressive in the polo community. In Calgary, they’ve even named a polo tournament, the Kimo Cup, after him. After traveling back and forth from Hawaii to Canada, Kimo fell in love once again in Oahu, but with the woman of his dreams, Stephanie. Together, they moved to San Diego to raise their three daughters.
Kimo has been playing polo in San Diego for seven years, and began teaching lessons in his spare time. He started with advanced private lessons, but as time went on, he enjoyed teaching beginners. Kimo jokes, “they make better students because they actually listen.” Kimo teaches beginner and advanced lessons, as well as various riding and polo clinics at the San Diego Polo School, where anyone can come out and take a lesson. A fourpack of beginner lessons starts at $200. All of the equipment is provided for the hour long lesson, and if he puts you on Shaka Laka, one of his thoroughbred horses, consider yourself lucky. Kimo encourages everyone to come out to the San Diego Polo School and give polo a shot. You might just get hooked. SANDIEGOPOLO.COM school@sandiegopolo.com 619-247-4448 4-pack beginner lessons $200

“Pompeii wanted to create the uniqueness of a salon so a gentleman could walk down the street and know he wouldn’t see the same swag on another.” POMPEII’S MEN’S FINE APPAREL Chester Pompeii started out in retail back East and later moved to the desert in the late ’90s. Upon his arrival, he had considered starting a restaurant but was drawn into menswear by what he saw as an unfilled niche. He didn’t want the typical men’s clothing store you could find

A STYLISH IMPRESSION Interview with Jason Jarvis of Terra Bella Landscape Development. BY WHITNEY BUTLER
F
irst impressions are important. Malcom Gladwell wrote a whole book about first impressions in Blink. Richard Branson famously explained that his “gut instinct” nearly always won out in debates over business ventures in Losing My Virginity: How I Survived, Had Fun, and Made a Fortune Doing Business My Way. However you spin it, first impressions happen too often to be ignored or marginalized by the idealism of second chances. The bottom line: first impressions only happen once. When I met with Jason Jarvis, owner of Terra Bella Landscape Development, I observed that he was tall—really tall—and he was waiting to shake my hand as I strode up the driveway of his impeccably landscaped home in Rancho Santa Fe. Some people might expect successful business owners to live in spotless, contemporary glass homes, free of personality or casual comfort, substituted instead for the red tape of order that defines a profitable empire. On this morning, the spirit of his children’s enthusiasm was present throughout the home as we walked to his office, complete with priceless finger-painted

masterpieces that hung adoringly on the office walls. “I truly believe that if you work hard, stay at it and persevere, that you can’t fail in life,” said Jarvis. “Everything in life you want, you can have.” Jarvis is not what you might expect when you think of someone digging out a swimming pool or planting desert succulents. With a background in fashion from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM), the luxury landscaper has traded in fabrics for foliage— fashion for fashionable landscaping. “We are a pool and landscape contractor,” Jarvis explained. “We build pools, spas, landscapes, pretty much anything in the yard. We build resorts. Wait till you see my backyard!” His list of clients is impressive. Almost as impressive as his wine cellar. “I’ve worked for a lot of the big builders here in Rancho . . . I recently renovated The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. My company is deeply embedded throughout the city. My Wife [Lila] is on the Board of Directors for the Community Center, and she’s my back office at Terra Bella.”
“I truly believe that if you work hard, stay at it and persevere, that you can’t fail in life.”
Jarvis likes fashion, and he clearly likes design. His casual yet pink-collared ensemble matched the comfortable office space painted in Tiffany Blue. It’s hard to say if the leopardprint carpet was mixed accidentally or represents a particular personality trait Jarvis wanted to highlight in his home. Either way, the mix of worldly antiques—like the red painted chair from China that I sat in—and contemporary building and functional amenities was rather well thought out for a guy with sports memorabilia hanging from his walls and sitting on shelves in his study. Stereotypes be damned. The big guy has great taste. “It seems rather simple,” said Jarvis, “but not everybody gets it. It’s like dressing. We use complementary colors. I wear brown leather boots. I pair them with a shirt that has a brown stripe in it. That’s what separates us from everybody else. I worked in fashion, then finance and now landscaping. I have a really weird background.” Weird is one way of putting it. And if first impressions are all about representing who we are in one singular moment, Jarvis was going to need more time. “I love art,” he said. “The aesthetics in life. I love beauty. For the most part my clients are some of the most successful people in the world. They are all high fashion. We [Terra Bella] are like the Neiman Marcus of Landscaping. We’re expensive—but you get what you pay for.”
With 17 trucks and more than 60 employees, Terra Bella has come a long way since its inception in 2005. The beautiful architectural drawings spread across Jarvis’s desk are like mini works of art. These prepared drawings cost anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000 and represent the first step in Jarvis’s creative process. Terra Bella Landscape is fluent in “San Diego-scaping” with advanced knowledge in environmental sustainability, though never compromising aesthetics. I suggested that he acquire the trademark for the term “San Diego-scaping.” “We try to find plants that don’t require a lot of water, succulents really,” he said. “I call it living art. It’s my passion right now. I create these colorful walls using these different succulent plants—agave, aloe.” Jarvis noted other popular trends like fruit trees done espalier style, Belgian trellises or crisscross latticework, raised herb boxes and other drought-resistant plants. We walked outside to take a look at Jarvis’s living masterpieces growing in his own backyard. “We can do everything from Mediterranean and tropical to a mixture of everything in between,” he said. As we walked about his backyard paradise, from the white sand beach to the raised patio of green grass and white roses, it was apparent that a mixture of things is where Jarvis seems most comfortable. “I have really eclectic taste. Just take a look around my house. I have things from China, the Pacific Asian Rim. I grew up on the beach in Laguna, so I love the ocean and I really like the color turquoise . . . I love walking into a house and feeling something, the outside or landscaping is the exact same thing. You can’t be afraid to combine colors and textures in new ways. And that’s what separates me from everyone else—I do things differently.” Doing things differently is inevitably what will make some companies successful and others not. Ask Richard Branson about it sometime. Jarvis may be the owner and dream weaver behind the beautiful exteriors of Terra Bella Landscape, but he’s also a guy you might not expect to pair your roses with olive trees. First impressions only take a second; building a successful company takes a whole lot longer, and Jarvis is certainly enjoying the fruit of his stylish labor.

WOMAN ON TOP District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis is serving herself by helping others. BY WHITNEY BUTLER
T
he view from the 13th floor of the Hall of Justice Courthouse in downtown San Diego is one to be remembered. The windows look out over the marina, and the reflective light of the water and glass from nearby buildings is remarkable. It’s hard to imagine a bad day in this office. Bonnie Dumanis welcomed me at the door, like an old friend. The District Attorney’s office nuanced the comfort of home, a space very lived in. Nearly every inch of the walls were covered in photographed memories, artwork and even a few tokens from celebrity friends. She and I sat around a large conference table at the far side of the room, where the sunlight seemed brightest. One wonders what it takes to do a job like Dumanis’s— how someone comes to bear the weight of decisions that impact a community, a state, a human life. The very table we sat around was where Dumanis had considered the death penalty during high-profile cases like that of Amber Dubois and Chelsea King. The thought of it made me shiver. “We see the underbelly of the county of San Diego,” she said. “It’s not for everyone, and you have to know the law in order to get the job done right.” Political agendas aside, the job Dumanis has been doing for more than 10 years in San Diego is a testament to those who place the law above all else, for the sake of others who may never come to know the struggle—never truly come to understand that jobs like Dumanis’s can’t simply be filled.
34
FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines
“It’s a calling to do this kind of work,” she said. “I have a passion for public service [and] it’s tremendously rewarding.” There is a kind of lightness to the self-proclaimed “pit bull” of the courtroom. As she relaxed into the conversation and her Massachusetts accent became slightly more pronounced, it’s difficult to imagine her petite stature facing some of the most violent and disturbing crimes this county has ever endured. She credits her ability to make tough decisions with experience she gained as a judge, learning to consider facts and the law above all else when determining a trial. And with advancements in forensics and DNA testing, she smiles knowing that justice can still be served to the families of loved ones whose case may have gone unsolved. The Cold Case Unit is something Dumanis is visibly excited about. Bringing old cases back to life is science fiction come to life. For the families that have personally been touched by these efforts, it’s both rewarding and tragic. “I hug them . . . I console them, and even though for some cases it’s been decades, for those families, it’s like it was yesterday. It’s very emotional,” she said. Dumanis lives with a profoundly deep integration of the law in most aspects of her life. Her favorite television programs are popular crime shows like NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service)—dramas that often get her up out of her seat in response to Hollywood’s over-simplification of the justice system.

“Sometimes I’ll think to myself, ‘They can’t do that!’ when I’m watching a show,” she said. “Some of the things they do are so over the top. You never solve a case in an hour.” For leisure, she enjoys learning more about the law or reading criminal mystery novels that often hit a little too close to home. “It gets too real sometimes,” she concluded. And like anyone committed to their work, getting away from the dayto-day can be challenging, though greatly deserved when managed. “I love to travel,” she said. “I love cruising.” Dumanis has been to Alaska twice, both sides of the Caribbean and throughout the Mediterranean on getaway. But even then, she is never totally unplugged. “I am completely married to my job,” she said. Today, Dumanis enjoys the little things: her wonderful family, partner Denice, adorable dog and good food at her favorite eateries— Busalacchi’s, D.Z. Akin’s or at Bite of Boston (her mother’s favorite). “I’m happy all the time,” she said. “I get sad when I have to do sad things . . . but I still have a passion after all these years.” She is very proud of her team and the accomplishments they have built together, including helping write and pass California’s Proposition 83, better known as Jessica’s Law. Dumanis looks right at home in her beautiful office on the 13th floor. It’s comfortable and well lived in. It suits her. And even though she has dedicated her life to serving the public and bears the burden of weighty decisions that most people can’t possibly imagine, she still has an incredible sense of humor about things. Her rich laughter is a sign that despite her calling to serve, she serves herself by being exactly who she is.

Mozy Jahanguiri of Rancho Santa Fe Bistro talks friendly about NFL legends. BY WHITNEY BUTLER
I
t’s only been a little over a year since Mozy Jahanguiri moved to San Diego. Born in Persia, the restaurateur opened his bistro in Rancho Santa Fe with the prospect of continuing to build reputable eateries, and to be closer to his son, who has served two tours in Afghanistan. Take a look around the intimate bistro and you might notice the friendly photos decorating the walls. If you’re a sports fan, don’t miss an opportunity to meet a man who knows a few legends.

“I met Jerry [Jones] in college,” said Jahanguiri. “He came to eat at my restaurant when Dallas played Minneapolis. He said, ‘Mozy, you should open one of these in Dallas.’ And so, we did.” Jerry Jones is a well-known businessman, popularly known as the owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys. Jahanguiri reminisced on the patio of his bistro about opening the restaurant Yvette in Dallas with Jones and Barry Switzer, former head coach of the University of Oklahoma and former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. According to Jahanguiri, these men made him a very rich man. “Jerry and Barry taught me about relationships, about how to be a better person,” he said. “It was never about money. These guys showed me that relationships are the most important thing in life.” Stop by the bistro, located at 6024 Paseo Delicias, for French/American cuisine, or if you’re a sports fan, take a look around and order a unique story.

TOM FORD The Tom Ford man hasn’t ever been a wallflower, but his unique strain of macho style is fully on display this season. Complete with striking floral trousers, high-shine suiting and embroidered silk dinner jackets, Ford’s collection was just about the most energized menswear statement he has made to date. This type of eyepopping statement was most notable in Ford’s use of color—most specifically, pink. In fact, pink was seen all over the runways, such as at Lanvin, Paul Smith and Richard James. Be sure to prep your wardrobe with at least one shade of this hot color this season. (continued on page 40)

EMPORIO ARMANI
HERMES
DRIES VAN NOTEN
Armani’s collection this season was a seamless symphony of neutral colors and an assortment of sportswear staples. The collection’s innate bodyconscious athleticism was obvious in its blazers that zipped (rather than buttoned) close to the body, in the lightness of its construction, in the sporty mesh-like perforations, and in the modern bonding and laser cutting. The biggest influence coming from the collection, however, is its slim-fitting gray cotton suits. This summer’s go-to when it comes to tailoring, similar gray suits were also exhibited at Emporio Armani, Gieves & Hawkes and Paul Smith—varying in color from concrete at their darkest to cement at their lightest, which is just a shade darker than white.
Hermès is one brand that simply never lets us down. The collection, designed by Véronique Nichanian, was made up of relaxed silhouettes in luxurious fabrics that were light and invitingly casual. Most surprising about the collection, though, was Nichanian’s use of lambskin like it was cotton. In fact, lambskin and leather were used in many designers’ shows this year. By getting rid of the lining and making it as thin as possible, leather has been reworked into seasonally appropriate apparel for shorts, light trousers and loose, yet structured, T-shirts.
In the world of menswear, it is truly a season of dark flowers. But Van Noten edged out his peers in this floral space with a collection that thoroughly explored every possible variation of the idea— putting his blossoms on as many pieces, and in as many varieties, as possible. From his surf prints to his gothic Hawaiian shirts, his collection unified itself in unlikely silhouettes and fabrications, all of which demonstrated his dedicated attention to a single, coherent vision. If a full-on floral-print suit isn’t your style, you can always inject some flower power into your wardrobe with your summer swim shorts, or by getting your hands on just one of Van Noten’s standout Hawaiian pieces.

VALENTINO How to make the utilitarian dress of the working class into something that is sophisticated and desirable? Leave it to designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino to come up with a way. From their exploration and renovation of everything denim, such as a light denim suit jacket that darkens down at the bottom to match perfectly with a pair of tailored pants, to camouflage print pants that conceal little flowers, they create “couture as culture”—the organizing principle of Valentino menswear. So those army-print cargo trousers you purchased last season? Good call. We even expect that there will be more when New York Fashion Week kicks off in September.

Get out of the gym and into shape with a low-impact hike. BY ASHLEY BAKER

ired of the same workouts? For most people, repetition quickly becomes boring. And when something’s boring, you’re less likely to do it. So why not try something new? There are many outdoor activities ripe for the season that will get you out of the gym and into shape. Hiking is a great option if you’re looking for something fun, convenient and effective. The natural walking motion provides you with a relatively lowimpact but effective workout—plus, you’re able to set the exact pace, intensity and length of your workout with ease.

The benefits don’t end there; new research has shown hiking stimulates the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, which may directly improve one’s mood. The dirt that you are exposed to while doing any kind of outdoor activity has been shown to have the same effects as Prozac. Dr. Chris Lowry and his colleagues at the University of Bristol and University College London made this discovery when they exposed lung cancer patients to a common, inoffensive microbe found in soil called Mycobacterium vaccae. LOOK AS YOUNG AS YOU FEEL AND FEEL AS YOUNG AS YOU LOOK. By Balkis Nasery
Shumway Cosmetic Surgery, run by Dr. Robert A. Shumway, MD., F.A.C.S. and his team offer services that may rival the mythology of magical waters to bring back the taut beautiful skin and lush vibrancy of our youth. Dr. Shumway specializes in cosmetic surgery and skin rejuvenation and Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). He believes that you should not only “Look as young as you feel, but feel as young as you look.” Hormonal imbalance begins for men and women at different stages of life. Dr. Shumway works on helping clients be proactive about preventing the symptoms and illnesses that arise due to the loss of various hormones in the body. Symptoms like fatigue, low libido, sexual endurance, weight-gain in the mid-section, and poor sleep are some of the underlying issues. Many of us assume these are the telltale signs of aging, and it cannot be undone, but that does not mean we just have to lie there and take it. Maintaining optimal levels of the correct hormones promotes an improved lifestyle, and perhaps prevents further illnesses. Bioidentical hormones are identical in molecular structure to the hormones that are naturally made in the body; they are derived from a variety of plants, including yams and soybeans. Dr. Shumway offers a complimentary consultation to discuss the benefits of BHRT and determine if hormone therapy is right for you. He orders a blood test to identify what hormones you may be deficient in, and then writes prescriptions for very specific hormonal compounds. Each individual has unique needs and so the prescriptions are tailored to provide optimal balance. Dr. Shumway schedules routine follow up appointments and labs to properly evaluate and, if needed, adjust the prescriptions. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy is a process, but the youthful results can be felt and seen within a few weeks. Dr. Shumway advocates BHRT to all of his cosmetic surgery patients. He understands that looking young is indeed wonderful, but feeling young and full of vitality is amazing! DR. ROBERT A. as their moods, improved significantly. The researchers found that this effect was caused by stimulation of neurons in the patients’ brains that produce serotonin, a feel-good chemical. And a happier you is a healthier you! Hiking is also the starting point of a whole range of other outdoor activities, such as rock climbing, mountaineering, mountain biking, paragliding and many others. Another benefit of hiking is the fact that it’s a year-round activity. Being able to hike in different conditions is one of its most appealing and challenging factors. Experiencing the colorful autumn leaves, the new green growth of spring and the warm summer evenings keep it interesting and varied, which will have you returning for more. And best of all, hiking is free—no contracts, monthly rates or expensive equipment. Luckily, we live in one of America’s finest cities where there is no shortage of scenic trails, starting with the lush Torrey Pines State Reserve. It offers eight miles of trails along the bluffs at the north end of La Jolla, with exceptional views up and down the coastline. Cool ocean breezes in summer make the reserve a great year-round hiking option. Also be sure to check out the Palomar Mountain Observatory Trail. The coniferous and oak-lined four-mile trail is clean and well maintained, with stunning vistas. The trail ends near the observatory, which is open year-round between nine a.m. and three p.m. If you are searching for something a bit more challenging, have a look at Cowles Mountain, located within Mission Trails Regional Park. It features a popular three-mile vertical climb to the highest point within the city of San Diego, affording panoramic views at the top. Steep switchbacks make for a heart-pounding excursion. And if that’s not enough, a trail at the top of the mountain leads an additional two miles to the top of nearby Pyles Peak. To reap the most benefit from this amazing hobby, be sure to plan ahead. Summer heat can be somewhat excessive, so arrange your hike for the first thing in the morning or late in the day. Be sure to bring plenty of water and a map with you every time. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, reduce stress, or simply clear your head and get out into nature, hiking delivers almost endless rewards. Birdseye view of the Torrey Pines trail.

LIGHTSHEER DUET: THE MOST EFFECTIVE LASER HAIR REMOVAL DEVICE GREAT FOR MEN AND WOMEN!
The Lumenis Lightsheer DUET is the GOLD Standard laser hair removal device that produces a larger beam of highly concentrated light. The light emitted is well absorbed by pigment located in the hair follicles. During the procedure, the laser pulses for a fraction of a second, allowing the hair to absorb the light and heat up. As it heats up, the hair shaft and bulb are damaged BEFORE AFTER which significantly impedes its ability to re-grow. And with the new large spot size, the process treats numerous hair follicles simultaneously, making the treatment much faster than traditional alternatives. A vacuum-assist technology and the large spot size make hair removal fast and comfortable, without the need for topical anesthetics and any messy gels. Hence, the Lightsheer DUET is 6 times faster, virtually painless and more effective. The Lightsheer DUET also offers the gold standard Lightsheer ET handpiece with a cooling chill tip for smaller areas. The treatment helps to eliminate hair follicles beneath the surface of the skin. EYES WIDE OPEN DR. MANOJ MOTWANI SPEAKS CANDIDLY ON FINDING HIS SIGHT.
In 1974, at the age of six, Manoj Motwani traded the British private school gardens of Gwalior, India, for the brick and asphalt of Queens, New York. He recalls his elementary school, PS201, with the impersonal tone one might use to greet a stranger. If the collision of culture was not trouble enough, becoming a star student in corrective glasses would certainly make it harder for a skinny Hindu kid. It was a bluecollar neighborhood with tough kids on the playground—a

place where this story begins. “I would read to escape,” said Motwani. “Sometimes I would wish that I wasn’t so smart so that [the teachers] wouldn’t like me so much.” Motwani’s love for the written word is distinct. “I think if my parents had let me, I would have liked to have become a writer,” he remarked. Notwithstanding his appreciation for literature is fundamental, he has a hard time sifting through

a mental collection of favorite titles and authors that, alike, have inspired him through various stages of life—a considerable motif in his colloquial speech—always moving forward, always discovering. By the time he was in high school, his family had moved to Long Island, where the schools were nicer, the population larger. The need to understand himself in new detail became more important—as it often does in adolescence—through
youthful interactions, which in his parents’ opinion were deemed unnecessary. “I wasn’t allowed to date in high school,” he said. “That just wasn’t something I got to do. I missed out on a lot . . . you learn how to deal with people and, more importantly, how to deal with yourself. I was still struggling to adapt to the culture of the United States, but I was also trying to figure myself out. I was expending a lot of energy just trying

to understand where I belonged and where I fit in. “I idled my way through everything,” he continued. “It wasn’t until I was in college that I realized that it wasn’t going to be good enough.” Lucky for him, his lack of academic effort went almost completely unnoticed. Motwani attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in upstate New York, where he enjoyed scholarships on account of his academic excellence. Founded in 1824, RPI is the country’s oldest technological research university, and it became the place where discovery and important career choices intersected. On the one hand, his love of science and technology would be satiated, on the other, “it was a school made up of 80 percent male students,” he joked. “Many people go into medicine because of personal contact they’ve had in the medical field. It’s usually very personal,” he explained. “I got pushed towards medicine because my dad wanted me to be a doctor.” Motwani was also nearsighted. He began a love affair with understanding how the human eye works in the third grade, which, like most things, ignited an unrelenting quest for answers—a baseline pushing him forward, driving him like the pulsing rhythm of EDM music which he surprisingly loves. So when he was accepted into medical school, Albany Medical College, one of the oldest medical schools in the nation, becoming an eye surgeon was an obvious choice. “I like knowing how things work . . . I wanted to know why

I was the way I was,” he said. “The promise of laser vision correction was extraordinary to me.” While med school proved a parental equilateral, it also afforded him the opportunity to put himself together—a marriage of his unabashed love for science and his need to understand how his own body worked, how he could fix his own sight, and maybe more. “While I was in med school, they were already doing laser vision correction in other parts of the world,” Motwani explained, elaborating on our country’s slow progress of particular sciences per stringent regulatory limitations. “We didn’t even allow laser corrective surgeries in the U.S. until 1996,” he concluded. “To me, it made perfect sense. Here is this tech-head guy that can build his own computer . . . I wasted constant hours playing laser video games, and now I get to use this incredible laser to fix the problem that has bedeviled me my whole life,” he explained. While the path lay ahead, new challenges surfaced. The prospect of his career in refractive surgeries had the young doctor spinning. With limited resources available in the United States, prestigious fellowships that didn’t actually train in refractive surgery, Motwani needed a mentor. “Refractive training was too new in this country and it was hard to find training,” he explained. “The only doctors performing the surgeries wanted us to pay to watch them. It was incredibly difficult to learn anything.” Motwani traveled all over the country looking for a way to learn the skills he desperately wanted to acquire. “Sometimes it’s not what you know,” he said, “it’s who you know.” Dr. Enrique Suarez hailed from Venezuela, a country that was progressively implementing laser corrective surgery at the time. It was by chance that Suarez and Motwani met through a mutual friend. Touched by Motwani’s tenacity and passion, Suarez invited Motwani, now 30, to learn from his practice in Venezuela. “The sheer volume of surgeries he was performing each day was unheard of in the States,” he explained. “I would see a dozen patients in a day and learn how to handle all the resulting problems from the ground up.” After a brief stint in Florida, Motwani came out to San Diego at the behest of two colleagues who tried to make a go of things in a market that was growing considerably favorable to the elective surgery. Eventually, he bought out the pair and built Motwani Lasik Institute, which now stands as the second-oldest practice of its kind in San Diego. Medical school and Dr. Suarez had prepared him for the challenges of the human eye, yet the reality of running a successful business and doing all the marketing and management were skills that required lifelong dedication. “They didn’t teach us any of that stuff in med school,” he concluded. But while the business grew and the material
pleasures of his successful career blossomed, so too did new temptation. “I was running with the wrong circles,” he said. “I was lost again, and it was a terrible time in my personal life. I was with women that loved what I had—they didn’t love me. People think that because you’re successful, drive a nice car and live in La Jolla that life is perfect. But when you’re successful and you can fix every eye that comes along, you get cocky. I wanted to understand how people worked and fix them, but people don’t work that way.” As quickly as the eye blinks, in between moments passed, there yet remains opportunity. From outside a glass home it often seems easier to throw stones than seek shelter from within, where Dr. Manoj Motwani remained, contemplating his future with a critical eye. “I met Lyra at a restaurant downtown,” he said. The sound of her name relaxed his shoulders as an affectionate smile spread across his face. “She’s smart and decent, beautiful and fun.” Though guarded for several months during the beginning of their courtship, through patience and understanding Lyra has brought him back to a place where he was unsure he might ever be able to go again. Through her love he has found himself again. “That was when I figured it out,” he said. “Now I understand where I was supposed to be years ago . . . this is the first time in my life that I am with someone that I want to be with and not someone I am ‘supposed’ to be with.” Dr. Motwani is a respected authority in the LASIK industry, specializing in refractive surgeries that have helped thousands of people see as well as, if not better than, with the eyes they were born. His admiration for technology has allowed him to remain on the cusp of innovation, providing patients of these elective surgeries with the best care and service. “In medicine the stakes are much higher. When you’re running a business and practicing medicine, you have to maintain integrity throughout both. You’ve got to hold your guns and stick to them.” Motwani joked that he is getting old. “I’m doing my own thing and I wouldn’t change it. How many people in this country can say they do what I do? How lucky am I?” He and Lyra got engaged earlier this year and are enjoying the very best of San Diego’s dining, nightlife and culture, exploring the world and each other during their engagement. Moreover, Dr. Motwani has set his sight on giving back to the community. “I’m taking the lessons my parents thought me, lessons from my faith and the great Mahatma Gandhi,

and working to better the world we live in,” he said. In 2010, Dr. Motwani rolled up his sleeves to feed the homeless of downtown San Diego at The Salvation Army. He then helped found a charity to feed the homeless, Urban Angels, which later partnered with the Connections Housing Project to provide food donations. Located on 6th and B Street, Connections has decreased homelessness in the area by 70%. Hungry for more, he started teaching and leading a goal setting class at the shelter for individuals who are struggling to find their own way. Motwani decided he was going to fix the problem one person at a time. “Our mission is not just to help those in need, but to find solutions that solve the problem and cycle of homelessness,” he said. “To do that, you have to inspire these people to think and to fix the problems that led them to lose essentially everything.” He found a like-minded literati in the new artistic director of The Old Globe Theatre, Barry Edelstein, who brought theater workshops to Connections, with plans to bring more theater in the future. “These people look just like you and me,” he said. “Sometimes, it’s just one wrong turn. People just need help getting back on track.” In finding himself, Motwani is helping others do the same thing. A year-and-a-half ago, Dr. Motwani underwent a two-part laser corrective surgery for his nearsightedness. Today he is looking out at the world with both eyes wide open and with a calm sense of self, developed over a lifetime—a collection of experiences that has made him whole. 2014 Porsche 911 provided by Porsche of San Diego. porscheofsandiego.com Shot on location at the Andaz Hotel in Downtown San Diego. sandiego.andaz.hyatt.com

LIL’ PIGGY’S Located in Coronado’s Ferry Landing and open since 2008, Lil’ Piggy’s Bar-B-Q brings all the flavor of a Memphis-style barbecue straight to San Diego. Inspired by a family tour through the most notable BBQ joints in Memphis, the Carolinas, Kansas City and more, Lil’ Piggy’s offers authentic specialties, blues music, red-checkered tablecloths and impressive park and bay views. The menu features fall-off-thebone servings, combo plates and juicy “sam-iches,” as well as a tasty selection of à la carte options, sides and a “Lil’ Piglet’s” menu for kids. The sit-down, casual restaurant uses pure hickory wood to flavor and cook the meats, which are offered either “dry” with sauce served on the side or “wet” with sauce applied directly on the meat. Open daily from noon ’til midnight, experience a tail waggin’ dining experience at San Diego’s original fast-casual, pork-centric eatery in the North Park neighborhood. Owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Hanis Cavin and Sara Stroud, Carnitas’ Snack Shack offers farm-fresh food, local craft beer, wine and snacks. “We change a portion of our menu every day and try to utilize as many products as possible from local farmers and artisan cheese and sausage makers,” says Chef Cavin. “We have an unassuming facade, and I think the quality of our food sometimes surprises people at first.” Don’t let this shack fool you. An outdoor-only dining establishment, the atmosphere is bright and lively, yet laidback but attentive. Offering elaborate presentations, Chef Cavin is constantly striving to use only sustainable and organic ingredients. “My relationship with local growers and artisan food producers is continuing to expand as I become more known for my food,” he says. “Every day I have the chance to create a meal that no one has ever tasted before. I want my guests to feel that they just ate something that was truly memorable.” Popular favorites include the Triple Threat Pork Sandwich with pork loin schnitzel, pulled pork, bacon, pepperoncini relish and shack aioli or Snack Shack Steak Sandwich with sliced rib eye, pepper jack, tomatoes,
philosophy that “BBQ is a technique not a sauce—the sauce has to complement the technique”—a great deal of attention is paid to each offering through a low-and-slow smoking style. As part of the thorough process, the restaurant’s signature pulled pork is made from whole bone-in shoulders and smoked for 12 hours. In addition to BBQ pork, chicken, brisket and sausage, a variety of sides is also available including corn fritters, fried pickles, “Memphis nachos” and beans that are made fresh daily with a heaping serving of pulled pork inside. AMICI’S EAST COAST PIZZERIA This highly successful Northern-California-based operation, featuring 12 Pizzeria restaurants, opened its first location in San Diego’s La Jolla neighborhood over a year ago, with its newest location in Hillcrest. Amici’s Pizza, “a taste of New York,” is baked with a thin crust in stainless steel Brick ovens, at over 720 degrees—the way traditional pizza has been prepared for hundreds of years. One of the dramatic visually enticing features of Amici’s Hillcrest is its amazing “exhibition kitchen,” in full view for all dining room patrons, where the staff prepares nearly all the dishes from the menu. Amici’s sits on 2800 square feet and features more than 150 seats. More often than not, pizza is seen continuously being tossed high in the air, individually, by one of the experienced pizza chefs. Amici’s offers more than 18 signature pizzas, with over 25 additional toppings available, six delicious signature salads, 15 pasta dishes and so much more. All pizzas, salads and pastas feature vegetarian and vegan selections. Amici’s also offers a wide variety of beer, wine and now champagne for its newest Pizza and Champagne celebrations. Amici’s award-winning pizzeria offers full lunch and dinner seven days a week from 11 a.m. daily. As a very special feature, Amici’s Pizza is always available for pickup as well as delivery. www.amicis.com (continued on page 74)

“The Patio on Lamont Street offers affordable farm-to-table cuisine that’s fresh, colorful and healthy.”
LOU & MICKEY’S
THE PATIO ON LAMONT STREET
Located at the entrance to San Diego’s Historic Gaslamp Quarter, within direct proximity to the San Diego Convention Center and Petco Park, Lou & Mickey’s serves memorable classic American cuisine with plenty of Midwestern hospitality that is welcoming and warm for anyone— whether decked out in a three-piece suit at a business lunch or in shorts and a tee en route to a Padres game, Midwestern hospitality can be called diplomatic. Cousins Jeff and Sam King opened Lou & Mickey’s to honor their fathers with a restaurant that showcases their roots by serving choice seafood and prime steaks in a relaxed, inviting environment reminiscent of a classic steakhouse. Prime beef is seared in a 1600-degree oven and brushed with duck fat for added flavor. The restaurant feels like a postWorld War II supper club, with a jazzy ’40s-inspired playlist. Dark wood lends to the warm atmosphere, complemented by the raw bar and extensive wine list, heavy on the reds. For a livelier vibe, guests may enjoy tasty cocktails in the lounge. Lou & Mickey’s also features one of the best patios in the Gaslamp, where guests can hear the roar of Petco Park two blocks away. Enjoy happy hour specials and a menu of American classics. In addition, Lou & Mickey’s is available for private events. www.louandmickeys.com
Open since 2012, The Patio on Lamont Street offers affordable farmto-table cuisine that’s fresh, colorful and healthy. With a demographic for people that range in age from age 21 to 85, Executive Chef John Medall says he can create many levels of food specialties that are pleasing to all palates. Meaty and hefty fare, especially pleasing to the male demographic, includes Steak and Eggs for brunch and a Kobe Burger for lunch with all the fixins’ including tomato, butter lettuce, cheddar, garlic aioli, red onion and a side of fries. For dinner, nothing hits the spot better than a 21-Day-Aged, Bone-In Ribeye with parsnip puree, roasted seasonal vegetables and demi-glace or the Braised Pork Shank with bacon and Asiago risotto. Besides indoor dining, The Patio on Lamont Street provides a casual outdoor venue that embraces the relationship between man and man’s best friend, including homemade dog treats made from the restaurant’s scraps and drippings. thepatioonlamont.com

TEMPTING TIRAMISU RECIPE & PHOTO BY M A R I A D E S I D E R ATA M O N TA N A
A
lso known as a “Tuscan Trifle,” tiramisu, which translates to “pick me up,” is a luscious melt-inyour-mouth Italian layered cake. The origins of tiramisu are a bit murky. Legend has it that a tiramisu-like dessert was created in Siena during the 17th century, but the known facts point to the dessert’s history as being fairly recent. The first documented tiramisu recipe appeared in 1983, in a book by Giovanni Capnist called I Dolci del Veneto (The Desserts of Veneto). Since then, this dessert has become popular all over Italy and the United States. Different variations of the recipe exist, with ladyfingers, eggs, espresso and mascarpone cheese as the key components. I don’t like the use of eggs in this recipe, since there is a slight risk of salmonella or other food-borne illness when consuming raw or lightly cooked eggs. So I have created a version without eggs that has a wonderful almond flavor, is light and airy, tastes authentic and is easy to prepare. Buon Appetito!

MARIA’S ALMOND TIRAMISU Makes 10 or more servings INGREDIENTS: 2 cups espresso or very strong coffee, divided 8 ounces mascarpone cheese 1 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon almond extract 1-1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar, divided 1 pint heavy whipping cream 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 tablespoon milk 40 ladyfingers, divided Unsweetened cocoa powder, enough for dusting 1/2 cup finely chopped dark chocolate for the top, more if desired METHOD: Brew the coffee. Set aside to cool. In a large mixing bowl, combine mascarpone, sour cream, almond extract, 1 cup of confectioners’ sugar and 3 tablespoons of the coffee. With a blender, beat well until creamy.
Pour coffee into a mediumsize, shallow bowl and add 1 tablespoon of milk. Lightly dip ladyfingers in coffee, coating both sides. (Do not completely immerse ladyfingers into the coffee or they will be too soggy.) Layer the bottom of a 13-by-9-inch baking dish with 20 ladyfingers, arranging them to fit.
In a separate large mixing bowl and with a blender, beat heavy whipping cream, 1/2 cup of confectioners’ sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form.
Spread half of the cream mixture on top. Using a small sieve, dust with cocoa powder (optional). Repeat a layer of the ladyfingers and top with the remaining cream mixture.
Gently fold the mascarpone mixture into the whipped cream mixture until just combined.
Dust the dessert with the rest of the cocoa powder and top with the chocolate pieces. Refrigerate at least 6 hours or overnight for best results (the ladyfingers will expand into a cake-like texture). Cut into squares and serve.
