PUBLISHER’S LETTER

…la belle vie Dear Readers, While Southern California is a year-round destination, the spring and summer seasons are a living testament to the very reason we call San Diego home. From the blooms of the garden and azure colors of the sea, to the warmth of the afternoon and after-dinner sunset skies – we welcome May for all she will bring. I’d like to personally extend my gratitude and admiration to mothers near and far; as Mother’s Day approaches, we are reminded once again that a mother’s love runs deep – and is such an irreplaceable part of our lives. I encourage you to take some time and recognize the mothers in your life; no matter how big or small the gesture, it’s the thought that counts. If you are looking for a great idea, I’ve included several upcoming events specifically for Mother’s Day on our May calendar, listed on page 17 – for your convenience. Join us this month in the pages of Fine as we explore and celebrate European style and living in San Diego; from the French-inspired menu at Mille Fleurs to the Parisian landscapes on display at the San Diego Museum of Art, as well as industry giant Franco Sarto and the ever-luxe Hotel Fouquet’s Barriere in Paris’ Champs-Elysees district, we are excited to share with you the world of fine living and luxury. In April, The Arc of San Diego’s Annual Gala, The Jewels of San Diego – ‘Carrousel du Louvre’, lit up the San Diego Harbor with more than 300 of San Diego’s philanthropic leaders, elected officials, and community members at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. In supporting of The Arc of San Diego’s milieu of programs, the event raised $60,000 in funds for the organization to continue providing essential life services such as day training, employment, and residential living services to 2,500 local San Diegans with disabilities. If you would like to contribute to this fantastic organization please visit them online at www.arc-sd.com and don’t forget to stop by page 73 to view featured photos from the wonderful night.

Enjoy

Q&A with Chef Martin Woesle

FINE: Is butter the one thing that separates French cuisine from all others? Chef Martin: No, moder n French cooking uses very little butter, but many dif ferent oils. Over the past 30 years, it has become lighter and more digestible. Of course some traditional French recipes require a ton of butter or they don’t work.

don’t last. Go after the classics. You want design to hold longevity, so be timeless, in essence. Quality and taste are also factors. Design shouldn’t be about what everyone else is doing or how others have designed their home. Less is more; it’s about simplici ty and drama. FINE: What is it about design that is personally rewarding for you? Kelly: I’ve always been a visually-oriented in dividual; and with an artistic lifestyle, design naturally unfolded for me. Location Point Loma Project Overview An historical renovation, this 5,400 square foot home is a testament to how good design and flow can be blended. In keeping with the architectural essence of the home, Kelly employed several period-antiques with a contemporary feel to accentuate the height of the ceilings, the curve of the arches and seamless motion from one room to the next.

Hunger Pains By Machel Penn Shull Photography courtesy of San Diego Food Bank

Of the three million residents currently living in San Diego, close to 485,000 live in or near poverty – facing continual food insecurities, or simply the threat of hunger; children account for more than 56 percent of this group. With the economy, homelessness and the working-poor contributing factors, the equation includes families and individuals that either do not have enough food, do not know where their next meal is coming from, or are having to choose between paying medical bills, rent or groceries. On a mission to feed and advocate for the hungry, the San Diego Food Bank serves more than 340,000 individuals each month – a number that equates to an estimated 15.3 million pounds of food and 12 million meals annually. This is their plight.

‘Life of Riley’ Unveils U.S. Premiere at Old Globe All photography courtesy of The Old Globe

Written by Sir Alan Ayckbourn and directed by Richard Seer, ‘Life of Riley’ – running through June 5 at The Old Globe in Balboa Park – makes its U.S. premiere this month, with opening night on Thursday, May 8 at 8 p.m. The cast features David Bishins (Simeon), Ray Chambers (Jack), Rebecca Gold (Tilly), Dana Green (Tamsin), Colin McPhillamy (Colin), Henny Russell (Kathryn) and Nisi Sturgis (Monica). Sir Alan Ayckbourn, one of the world’s most successful living playwrights, was recently awarded the U.K.’s Critics’ Circle Annual Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts and a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater. He is also The Old Globe’s most-produced living playwright; Globe audiences have enjoyed 10 of Ayckbourn’s plays since 1978, including the U.S. premieres of Mr. A’s Amazing Maze Plays and Intimate Exchanges. With ‘Life of Riley’ (Sir Alan’s 74th play!) the playwright looks backwards, forwards and, now and then, sideways with wry comic affection on the lives we lived or might have lived. George Riley’s closest friends discover that he has just a few months to live and they each deal with the news in their own very surprising way. George has deeply affected each of their lives, and he is now plotting one last final farewell, which could upset all of their futures. The Tony Award-winning Old Globe is one of the country’s leading professional regional theaters and has stood as San Diego’s flagship arts institution for 75 years. Under the direction of Executive Producer Louis G. Spisto, The Old Globe produces a year-round season of 15 productions of classic, contemporary and new works on its three Balboa Park stages. Pimento Fine Art Presents Part II of ‘DUALITY’ by Jill Joy All photography courtesy of Pimento Fine Art

Showcasing the second installment of Jill Joy’s recent collection, Pimento Fine Art presents “Duality” – the balance of dark and light within; a two-part exhibition displayed now through May 27. In this half of the series, you will see a clear representation of Joy’s inner peace, light and love throughout the highlights of white, purple and blue on the canvas. Joy’s inspiration stems from her personal growth, spiritual evolution and the natural world. “Duality” provides an insight to her innermost feelings and experiences, both the uplifting and the heart wrenching. “Part II: The Light” explores emotions such as hope, anticipation and elation in opposition to the darker emotions of the first installment. “I seek to render the unseen worlds of emotional and subconscious experience into visible imagery. My work is an effort to evolve my own consciousness and the consciousness of the viewer,” said Joy. “My goal is to express the trials of human existence, both the dark and the light, and to provide a gaze into the inner world of the soul.” Joy is a self-taught artist who began painting in 1993. After growing up in Hawaii, Arizona and Massachusetts, she moved to New York and now resides in San Diego. To learn more about Jill Joy and to view her work, please visit jilljoy.com

Paris in the Springtime EVENTS

All photography courtesy of Jessie Aguayo

Held in early April, The Arc of San Diego’s Annual Gala – ‘The Jewels of San Diego’ – was attended by more than 300 philanthropic leaders, elected officials and community members in an effort to raise awareness and funds for the nonprofit’s ongoing programs. Hosted by the Sheraton and produced by television personality and owner of Fashion Forward, Leonard Simpson, the event featured an incredible Fashion Runway Extravaganza showcasing Parisian-inspired couture fashions, in line with the “Carrousel du Louvre” theme; not to mention both live and silent auctions. The Arc of San Diego is on a mission to empower persons with disabilities, and their families, by working in partnership to create opportunities to achieve their individual goals within the community. Honorary Jewels Chairs, Phyllis & John Parrish, are long-time supporters of The Arc of San Diego and put together an incredible lineup of Honorary Jewels Chairs that included: Marilyn & Kim Fletcher, Lee & Frank Goldberg, Jeanne Jones & Don Breitenberg, Joye Blount & Jessie J. Knight, Jr., Sandy Redman & Jeff Mueller, and Sally B. & John M. Thor nton. Please visit: arc-sd.com
