PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Dear Readers, There’s no doubt that our climate and culture here in San Diego are among our greatest treasures, often luring transplants and world travelers in the process. And while we can boast of an annual forecast of sunshine and ocean air, I find myself always enjoying the regeneration of spring; after several months of [much needed] rains and early morning fog, the warmth and return of spring is unlike any other. So in celebrating the simple pleasures of the season, our March issue of FINE Magazine features the prints and blooms of Lilly Pulitzer, the gardens and missions of San Diego, as well as a relaxing holiday at Hacienda Cerritos in Baja California Sur on the Pacific.
In furthering the overall magazine experience for our readers, we are excited to introduce “Mobile Tags.” With the use of a smart phone, mobile tags allow readers to scan marked materials and review additional content, video, photography and the like online. It only takes a few seconds to capture the link, thus giving our editorial added interactive features. Please see page 42 for details.
The San Diego Food Bank this month brings a luncheon and fashion show to the Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel – ‘Fashion Plates’, directly benefiting the Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. Produced by KUSI’s “Style Guy” Leonard Simpson and chaired by Sally B. Thornton, the event will feature a live and silent auction, along with a theatrical showcase bringing together a number of trend-setting designers and stylists. The program, providing weekend backpacks of food to chronically hungry children, currently supports students at 22 elementary schools in San Diego County. Tickets for the event are available at sandiegofoodbank.org.
Enjoy

A fruit orchard still remains, along with Califor nia’s first pepper tree, planted in 1830. The Califor nia Missions Foundation recently presented the mission with two checks through generous grants - one for $20,000 from the Lin den Root Dickinson Foundation and another for $35,000 through the Hearst Foundatio n. These monies are designated as a match toward the $640,000 ‘Save America’s Treasures’ grant the mission received from the National Parks Service to help initiate the mandatory seismic retrofit of the historic mission church; the capital campaign to raise the funds continues. Additional restoration projects of note include: preserving mission artwork, paintings and stat ues; renovating historic archways; and reviving century-old gardens.

DINING
A Fresh Catch Daily inspired by the bounty of the sea, San Diego is continuously known for its exceptional seafood offerings; and with a Southern California setting along the Pacific Rim, the possibilities are endless when seeking the freshest selections and flavors locally. Without a doubt, seafood holds a significant portion of our diets; as a result, quality, creativity and service matter. In no particular order, here are our top choices for San Diego’s freshest flavors and seafood cuisine.

Exploring San Diego’s Gardens San Diego’s temperate climate, with its weather of eternal spring, continues to lure international visitors and transplants alike, while treating residents to the local alfresco lifestyle; the abundance of outdoor living and cultural diversity are undeniably our greatest of treasures. And in true Southern California form, our garden landscape blossoms throughout the year, unveiling the expression of their very existence; a form that simply stems from their aesthetic, historical and environmental significance.

Chasing Pheidippides Marathon Training 101 by Jason R. Karp, Ph.D.

Battle of Marathon, mankind has held a compelling interest in endurance. W ith nearly 400 marathons in the U.S. each year (more than a dozen in San Diego

runners, it is an understatement to suggest that running a marathon is a big deal; once the realm of elite athletes, the average age of marathon finishers is 40 for men and 36 for women.
So in
a quest to cross the finish line and quite possibly chase Pheidippides in the process, how does one actually train for a marathon?
Mileage The number of miles you run each week is the most important part of marathon training because of how it improves your aerobic fitness. More specifically, running many miles is four-fold: it improves blood vessels’ oxygen-carrying capability by increasing the number of red blood cells and hemoglobin, increases the use of intramuscular fat to spare your limited store of carbohydrates (glycogen), creates a greater capillary network around your muscle fibers so oxygen can dif fuse more quickly into the muscles, and increases the number of 68

Increase mileage by no more than 1 mile/day/week. If you currently run 20 miles in 4 days/week, run no more than 24 miles next week by adding 1 mile to each of the 4 days. Do not run 24 miles next week by adding all 4 miles to only 1 day of running. Trained runners can get away with adding more miles more quickly, especially if they have experience running more miles.
•
Run same mileage for 3-4 weeks before increasing it. Give legs a chance to adapt to each level of running before increasing the level.
•
Back off training by about 1/3 for 1 recovery week before increasing training load. If you have been running 30 miles/week for 3 weeks, back off to 20 miles for 1 week before increasing above 30 miles for next week.
•
Never increase volume and intensity at the same time. When you begin to include speedwork, either drop overall mileage for the week or maintain mileage from where it was prior to adding speedwork. Never add more miles to the week at the same time as introducing speedwork.
•
Get adequate recovery. All adaptations from training occur during recovery from training, not during training itself. The older you are, the more time you need to recover from training, so the longer you need before increasing volume and intensity.

Harbor Island Hosts 21st Annual San Diego Sunroad Boat Show
From an 88 foot Sunseeker to a Dash 750, guests of the 21st Annual San Diego Sunroad Boat Show were treated to more than 100 vessels docked at the Sunroad Resort Marina, not to mention the surroundings of Harbor Island’s scenic eastern rim and bayfront views. The newly relocated event offered brokers, buyers and enthusiasts alike expanded inventory with the latest technologies, designs and green innovations; the opportunity for inwater demonstrations and tours was also a highlight for many in attendance. San Diego is ranked as the second highest boating state in the nation, just behind Florida. Web: bigbayboatshow.com All photography courtesy of San Diego Sunroad Boat Show.
A Place Called Home: Photographic Exhibit Helping to Fight Homelessness
Extended throughout the month of February, “Home Again” – a photographic exhibition celebrating United Way’s 90th Anniversary – showcased the work of photographer Gary Payne, capturing the advantages of providing permanent supportive housing as a solution to end chronic homelessness. The display featured inspiring portraits and stories of those who were formerly homeless, including military veterans and single moms, who have reclaimed their dignity and rediscovered what it means to be “home again.” The outdoor exhibit was held at the NBC Plaza due to the generosity of The Irvine Company. Watson W ins 2011 Farmers Insurance PGA Open at Torrey Pines
Making visual putts on the last two holes of the tournament, including a 12-foot birdie at the 18th, Watson garnered for a 5-under 67 to win the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in a finish that was dramatic for peculiar reasons; Mickelson – the other left-hander and tournament favorite – was one shot behind when he chose to lay up from the rough on the 18th before Watson attempted his birdie putt. Watson won a $1 million purse; 2011 marks the 15th PGA Tour in San Diego, formally known as the Buick Invitational until last year. “I worked this winter on my mind to be more focused,” notes Watson. “To be worried about what I’m doing and not what everybody else is doing. It was just to focus on what I had to do. So it just shows that I can do it. I did it twice now. I’m only like 50 (wins) behind Phil and 80 behind Tiger, so they better watch out.” Web: farmersinsuranceopen.com All photography courtesy of Brent Haywood.
CIRQUE DU SOLEIL brings “Quidam” to San Diego
Having already delighted more than 100 million spectators in 300 cities across five continents, “Quidam” – Cirque du Soleil’s newest aerial performance – comes to San Diego for a limited engagement March 30 through April 3 at the Valley View Casino Center. The 52 member cast of world-class acrobats, musicians, singers and characters bring to life the adventures of young Zoe; after growing apathetic towards life from being ignored by her parents, she slides into the imaginary world of Quidam looking to fill the void where she meets characters who encourage her to free her soul.
