Located on the Riviera Maya on the northeastern Yucatán Peninsula, Banyan Tree Mayakoba is a luxury resort in Mexico intent on pampering their guests to outright relaxation. From the serene lobby peppered with potted plants to the warm reception hall where the staff greets guests with ice-cold beverages and flower bracelets, Banyan Tree Mayakoba is, from the beginning, a stroll through a peaceful paradise. The resort is located in the city of Mayakoba, a hidden gem within the confines of the Yucatán Peninsula. With an array of mangrove trees and freshwater lagoons, guests of all ages can enjoy a variety of activities in Mayakoba including snorkeling, paddle boarding, tennis, golf and even spelunking. Nature is at its finest in Mayakoba, but you don’t have to venture far into the city to enjoy Mexico; Banyan Tree Mayakoba has everything you could ever want right at your door. The resort offers guests a selection of private villas for the duration of their stay, and once you step foot into one of these cozy spaces, you’ll never want to leave. Even the most basic rooms at the Banyan Tree Mayakoba offer amenities that put other resorts to shame, including free WiFi, an outdoor bathtub lined with candles, complementary bicycles, a 55” smart TV and a private swimming pool—and that’s only the basic villas, the Bliss Pool Villa. Some of the more extravagant villas—such as the Serenity Pool Villa—include pools with jets, an entertainment pavilion and a wine fridge stocked with complimentary bottles. Whether you dream of an oceanfront villa with waves crashing against the shore or a quiet evening by the freshwater lagoons, Banyan Tree Mayakoba contains a villa for you. Many of the larger villas also include kitchen amenities, though they certainly aren’t necessary. The Banyan Tree Mayakoba offers numerous restaurants and eating establishments fit for a king–– or for whatever life throws at you. Looking for a casual lunch experience? Enjoy Sands, an outdoor restaurant that serves savory Mexican food. Craving cocktails like a refreshing margarita or a cold beer for your beach outing? The Beach Shack is a bar located on the warm sandy beaches of Mayakoba. Want to explore the lagoons and traverse the calm waters? Ixchel is a traditional trajinera boat ride that includes a fusion of local and international cuisine. Perhaps the most stellar restaurant on the property, however, is Banyan Tree’s signature restaurant Saffron. Serving traditional Thai cuisine that shocks your tastebuds with a sweet and savory 30

fusion, Saffron is a lavish, romantic restaurant. With meals served on an outdoor wooden deck situated on the lagoon, guests can dine on expertly prepared food by candlelight just bright enough to illuminate the tropical mangroves in the distance. Chef Renu Homsombat, the expert at the helm and creator of Saffron’s delicacies, has two decades of experience preparing Thai food. Fresh, flavorful and authentic, Saffron’s scrumptious seafood and perfectly prepared plates will make your mouth water from the moment the dishes hit the table. With unique sauces and an expertly handcrafted presentation, it’s impossible to leave Saffron unsatisfied. Saffron is the ideal dinner location, but for a casual breakfast, Oriente is a flawless choice. This breakfast buffet overlooks the Reflections Pool and carries homemade Mexican and international breakfast foods. Anything, from sushi to quesadillas to omelettes, are available at Oriente, with most dishes customizable to the guests’ desires. However it’s the healthy beverages that offer incredible flavor combinations. Each fresh juice contains a combination of various tropical fruits. One standout is the cucumber, mint and mango juice— it’s both detoxifying and satisfying for the palate. Though the food is fantastic and the in-room services are unparalleled, the true draw to Banyan Tree Mayakoba is the outright pampering. From the private pools to the courteous staff, everyone at this opulent resort is dedicated to indulging the guests. The superlative spa, however, is the pinnacle of Banyan Tree Mayakoba. With freshly prepared ingredients, pure essential oils and expert massage therapists, the spa is an oasis of relaxation. Indulge in a calming Swedish massage, a soothing rose petal foot bath or a Royal Banyan Herbal Pouch Massage, in which guests are rubbed with a warm pouch dipped in sesame oil. The Rainforest in the spa includes a hydrothermal circuit that alternates the temperature in thermal cabins. The spa even operates an aroma steam chamber and a sauna to provide guests with a rejuvenating day. Guests can choose from numerous spa packages—including a fitness package that features a trainer— and be reinvigorated and relaxed in their favorite way. With the pristine villas and the premier pampering, there’s almost no reason to venture outside of the resort. A perfect tropical getaway, hidden behind private gates, Banyan Tree Mayakoba is a tranquil paradise that floats your worries out to sea. Enjoy one of the best resorts that Mexico has to offer—so serene you’ll never want to leave.

A Passport to Spanish
Playa Flamingo, one of three CPI campuses, offers a beachside learning experience.
Full-Immersion Spanish Learning with CPI in Costa Rica By Anh La Costa Rica is a renowned mecca for tourists. A rugged country in Central America with lush rain forests and a warm, tropical climate, this coastal destination provides travelers with the best of both beach and inland life. Beautiful palm trees and exotic fauna dot the coastline, and the dense foliage plays home to exotic creatures such as monkeys, iguanas and sloths. The indigenous fruits are bursting with juicy nectar and sweet citrus flavors, turning every meal into a finger-licking feast. Yes, Costa Rica is a dream vacation, the perfect place to pull the brim of your straw hat over your eyes, kick up your heels and drift into a happy haze. In fact, Costa Rica is now such an ideal getaway location that many people are buying second homes, timesharing villas or spending weeks on end in this pristine paradise. With the natural beauty and vibrant culture right at your fingertips, why not undergo a fully immersive experience and learn the language? A Spanish language immersion institute, CPI Spanish, offers various programs for students of all ages and levels to learn Spanish in an intimate setting of no more than four students per class. From advanced speakers to students who can only say hola, CPI helps both adults and children learn the language and have fun in the process. Small classes guarantee individualized attention and fast friendships with other students—and you’re never too old to be a CPI student. CPI caters to a myriad of different people including families traveling with young or even teenage children, retirees seeking a relaxed learning environment or college students obtaining
university credit for their coursework. Founded in 1991, CPI has twenty-five years of experience teaching a second language to travelers who aim to get the most out of their international adventures. With three different locations in Costa Rica— Playa Flamingo, San Joaquín de Flores and Monteverde Cloud Forest—CPI ensures that all students can travel and absorb as much of the language and culture as they desire. Students can choose to study at one of the locations or at all three—and that may be tempting, because each campus and city is quite different from the next. Playa Flamingo: If you love hot weather, sand and a charming beach vacation, Playa Flamingo is the CPI campus for you. Located on the gorgeous Guanacaste coastline, the smooth sand and warm rays make this beach an unforgettable spot. Learn how to surf, sail towards the sunset on a catamaran cruise or just lounge on a blanket reading a book. One unique aspect extended by this CPI location? They also offer an Open Water Diver Certification course. In addition to learning Spanish, students can submerge themselves in scuba diving and enjoy the diverse sea life of the Pacific Ocean where hundreds of colorful fish and coral reefs reside. There is a laid-back atmosphere in San Joaquín de Flores, where the locals all know each other and everything is a short bus ride away. Nature and greenery are everywhere in San Joaquín de Flores; hike the Poas Volcano or explore a local coffee plantation. Rappel down a waterfall or tour the rainforest canopy. This tiny town is ideal for integrating into daily life in Costa Rica. Monteverde Cloud Forest: This tourist favorite is immersed in lush vegetation and boasts breathtaking vistas—literally breathtaking, because Monteverde is located 5,000 feet above sea level, nestled among Costa Rica’s mountains. Perfect for anyone bitten by the adventure bug, Monteverde’s mountainside offers a myriad of heart-thudding and stomachclenching activities. Zipline through the treetops or take a dive and bungee jump. Enjoy a leisurely hike through the dense foliage where you could encounter 400 species of birds and over 100 different species of mammals. Monteverde is the perfect town and CPI campus for students looking to get out and explore the natural world. Every CPI location offers a different kind of experience—from small town life, to an adventurous forage through nature, to a beach vacation—and all three come highly recommended. Even more notable, however, are the professors. Dedicated to teaching Spanish in a fun and useful manner, CPI professors

are masters of their field. Classes are structured to be lighthearted and conversational, giving students everything they need to step into the Costa Rican streets and understand the locals. Most of all, CPI professors aim to boost their students’ confidence and enjoyment of learning Spanish. The CPI office staff is bilingual, attentive to different needs and dedicate considerable time to organizing out-of-class activities or transportation to nearby cities. They work hard to make students feel like part of the CPI family and greet their students with warm smiles every day. In regards to housing, most students choose to stay with local families to learn more about the culture and food and to maximize their opportunity to practice Spanish. These host families are kind, welcoming and experienced; some families have been receiving students since CPI opened their doors 25 years ago. It’s this duration of CPI that speaks volumes. For 25 years, this academic organization has dedicated itself to providing lessons and cultural experiences to their students. While some international language schools lock their students away in stuffy classrooms for eight hours a day, CPI creates a fully immersive, high-quality program that integrates the beauty of Costa Rica with the intricacies of the Spanish language. It’s a memorable, stress-free travel experience you can carry with you around the world for the rest of your life. Enjoy a tropical adventure while expanding your cultural base and Spanish prowess. Go on; have a 5-star educational vacation with Costa Rica’s CPI.

University of Missouri offers a small-town college experience for $25,998 a year.
A $250,000 Education With Rising College Tuition Costs, is a Degree Worthwhile? By Madison Michelle The Baby Boomers may remember a glorious time when the cost of college was a few thousand dollars each semester and a four-year degree guaranteed a full-time, steady job with a reasonable—maybe even generous—income and benefits package. Undergo the college cakewalk and bask in a lifetime of financial security… or so everyone thought. Nowadays, the job market has become increasingly competitive; a degree guarantees nothing but a hefty price and a battle for underwhelming entry-level positions. As your kids age and college looms on the horizon, the massive tuition charges can feel like a fevered firestorm, smoke curling around your head and choking your throat—and your wallet. With the value of a degree decreasing and the cost of tuition increasing, it’s no wonder so many people—a large number of them students—leapt to Bernie Sanders’s side during the primary elections. Students are intrigued by the idea of a free education, and for good reason, but are rising tuition costs really unreasonable? Over the past twenty years, college tuition has climbed
exponentially across the nation, and there are no signs of this perpetual increase ending. Now it’s more likely that a college will raise their tuition every year, hiking the price by hundreds—sometimes a thousand—dollars at a time. Some universities, like the private institution The George Washington University (GW), offer a small condolence: they provide a fixed tuition rate. This means the tuition cost of your child’s freshman year will be the same as their senior year—it will never increase. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean much in the long-run; famously, for the 2016–17 school year, GW is charging $51,875 a year for tuition. GW isn’t the only school gouging students and their families on tuition every year. University of California San Diego (UCSD) charged out-of-state students $49,908 for the 2015–16 year. Even schools without a strong metropolitan draw, such as the University of Missouri, charge out-of-state rates the Baby Boomers would have gawked at years ago ($25,998 for the 2016–17 year). And tuition, unfortunately, is just the tip of the iceberg in (cont. on p.38)

college costs. Parents and students also have to shell out payments for meal plans, parking passes and housing. GW, for example, currently requires all freshmen and sophomore students to live on campus, where the cheapest campus housing is $1,062 a month per person—and that’s with three other roommates. Another wallop to the wallet? Textbook costs. According to NBC News, since 2006, the cost of a college textbook has increased by 73%. Schools like the University of Missouri now recommend that students budget $1,200 a year solely for textbooks and classroom supplies. While e-books and renting textbooks offer helpful savings, costs are still well outside what the average student earns monthly at a part-time job. Gone are the days when a student could work their way through college; now students face the burden of debt and parents are asked to fill in the gaps. With jobs not guaranteed and college costs skyrocketing, many weary students—and skeptical parents— find themselves asking: is college worth it? Where does all of that money go? As it turns out, the answer is complicated. College tuition money doesn’t vanish into thin air—or into the pockets of greedy provosts and officials. The money paid to universities is (mostly) used for the betterment of students. There are the obvious expenses—paying professors and university employees as well as performing maintenance on university property—but there are less obvious costs. Some of the money, for example, is used in the upkeep and updating of classrooms. Regular overhead projectors have now turned into “Smart Boards.” Now, with the click of a button, a professor can transform a lecture into an interactive experience; this has been proven to aid in students’ recollection abilities. To combat overcrowded lecture halls, upgraded speaker systems have been installed so the professors are always heard. Universities across the country are implementing modern technology in innovative ways for the betterment of students—and unfortunately, that costs money. A renewed focus on the health and wellness of students is another perk. Athletic facilities are constantly updated, and many college campuses—such as GW and University of Missouri—
One of the more expensive universities in the country, The George Washington University is $51,875 a year.

include a gym membership to their campus recreational center to promote a healthy lifestyle and teach students how to properly use gym equipment. Most universities work gym maintenance into their yearly budget to give students safe and effective equipment. Even better, the majority of schools also have a health center. With top-of-the-line labs and qualified doctors, parents don’t need to worry about their child’s wellbeing––and in this day and age, student health centers often cover mental check-ups as well. Students at some universities are able to receive anywhere from three to seven visits with a psychiatrist or psychologist before having to use insurance or pay out of pocket. Of course, some tuition money goes towards providing students with a well-rounded experience. Guest lecturers and speakers are secured, school formals and events are held and student organizations are funded. The price of a college education may be rising but so is the quality of the modern college experience. There’s no question that tuition money is used in large part for the betterment of students… but why does the cost have to be so high? The truth is, it doesn’t. For budget-conscious parents (or anyone who doesn’t feel like writing a $50,000 check every year), there are cheaper alternatives. A public school like UCSD offers tuition at $25,200 a year for California residents—that’s nearly half of the out-of-state cost. Scholarships and financial aid packages are available to keep expenses low too. The cost of a college degree depends more on where your child goes to school than anything else. While shelling out $25k a year certainly isn’t a walk in the park, it’s more manageable than the cost of a private university. Even though a degree doesn’t guarantee a job anymore, the knowledge and personal growth your child will gain is still well worth the university price tag; while you can put a price on education, you can’t put a price on experience.

ERIK JEPSEN
In Lieu of Public Alternative Education Options Around San Diego By Emily Glaser Heralded by the butter yellow glow of buses and the packed shelves of pencil boxes at superstores, a new school year is upon us. Traditionally that means a few iconic sights and sounds: squeaky linoleum, rust-spotted lockers and the jarring ring of bells. But across San Diego, those old school (pun intended) harbingers of education are being replaced by diverse symbols of study. Some students find their spots not at graffitied desks but at their own kitchen tables. Others receive their science lessons not in power points but in the salty waves and cool caves of nature herself. Still others find themselves in labs and computerized classrooms so modern and high-tech they hardly resemble the schools of yore. What we’re trying to say is that “school” doesn’t just mean “public” anymore. From top-notch private schools, to specialized charter schools, right down to modern homeschooling programs, there’s an option in San Diego that’s perfect—and personalized—for your youngin’. Whether they harbor dreams of building techie apps or just want to roam with animals at the zoo, there’s a school or program that caters to their passions and learning style.

quickly fading. Homeschooling is the fastest-growing form of education in the US, and with good reason. According to most studies, students who receive their education at home tend to score above average on college admissions tests like the SAT and ACT, and they score 15 to 30 percentile points above public school students on standardized testing. It’s not just the statistics that are swaying more families towards homeschooling. Unlike traditional public school formats, homeschooling is customizable per student. There are a variety of programs, approaches and even (cont. on p.42)

academies with a sliding scale of offerings to appeal to every kid. A lot of parents rely on packaged curriculum created specifically for homeschooling. These traditional packages contain lesson plans, workbooks, textbooks—everything you would expect a homeschool to include. But now parents are exploring a diverse spectrum of teaching methods ranging from the casual to the positively fun.
their homeschool on the road. These families are exploring American history and geography from the front seat of an RV, discussing oceanography on the family sailboat and learning economics on the bright streets of India. Without the confines of a traditional classroom, you can create incredible memories and keep your kids ahead of the curve.
Unschoolers / Natural Learning This modern method of homeschooling puts the child in charge. Essentially, your child can help manipulate the lesson based on their preferences or passions, but in a natural way. Think of it as the paleo diet of homeschooling. For example, if it’s time to teach your kids about sea life, you might take a trip to the zoo and spend a lot of time in the steamy aquariums. Grammar lessons don’t come from workbooks, but from ordinary conversation.
As of 2014, California had the highest percentage of students enrolled in charter schools in the country: 513,400, representing nearly ten percent of total public school students in the state. So what makes charter schools increasingly popular? In the age of “I,” charter schools offer more personalization than traditional public schools. Each school appeals specifically to your child’s interests, whether that’s science, the arts or technology. Take, for example, High Tech High International in Liberty Station. The San Diego civic and tech communities came together a few years ago to create a school system that would prepare more students for the growing high-tech industry—a High Tech High Village. One of those schools is High Tech High International, a high school with a small student body of just 400. This charter school offers college preparatory work with a global spin, and the small size means each student can receive a personalized education. Students at High Tech High are treated like adults, so they’re prepared for the real world outside of local San Diego. And what they’re doing is really working: 100% of students enroll in college following
Eclectic Method Like the unschoolers, parents who rely on the eclectic method let the kids lead the way with even more daily control. Whatever fits naturally into the day’s schedule—or with your child’s mood—is incorporated into a lesson. A trip to the grocery store, for example, can offer a valuable lecture in economics. The eclectic method also incorporates play time and field trips, so it’s engaging for younger children. Unit Studies Unit studies are the catch-all of homeschooling and easy for creative parents to organize, especially for wee ones. It’s easy to engage kids in a topic they’re interested in and then use that same topic for a series of different lessons. If, for example, your child is an avid horse lover, it’s easy to apply that topic to a variety of subjects. Reading (Black Beauty), writing (her own story), spelling (even we forget how to spell “equestrian” sometimes), history (who first rode a horse, anyways?), even math—it’s easy to positively manipulate their minds with unit studies. The old challenges of homeschooling are easily alleviated with modern methods. A lot of parents in the past worried about socialization, but it’s easy to get the kids out of the house and around other homeschooled children these days thanks to social media and technology. And if it all seems overwhelming, there are several academies around San Diego structured specifically to help parents with homeschooling. Learning Choice Academy, for example, offers instructional materials, books and a certified teacher to work alongside parents plus field trips and activities to help socialize the tykes. Accelerated Academics Inc. offers accommodations for exceptional children pursuing sports or extracurricular activities. Our favorite advantage of homeschooling is the ability to travel with your little ones. More and more parents are taking

graduation from High Tech High International. Other schools, like the Preuss School at UCSD, offer opportunities for hundreds of students who wouldn’t usually have access to high-quality education. The Preuss School, which offers grades in middle and high school, was created for low income students across San Diego county who aim to become the first in their families to graduate from college. Most of them do just that: 90% of those students go to four year universities. The Preuss School is brightening the future of children throughout the county in large part thanks to donations from caring community members. (cont. on p.44)

PRIVATE SCHOOLS We know private schools aren’t a novel idea, but they’ve certainly changed in recent years. Gone are the stuffy, structured and strict private schools of old; replacing them are a new class of modern, personalized schools. Many of San Diego’s private schools have been around for over a century, but they’ve adapted to changing times and ideas in order to offer their students personal expression. The Bishop’s School, which has been around since 1909, epitomizes a contemporary private school. Set in a historic and beautiful campus on eleven acres in La Jolla, The Bishop’s School is an elite educational facility, but it also offers customization for the 21st century. Small classes of just 14–16 students and a strong ethical backbone uphold traditional tenets mixed with modern amenities. Another great private school around town? Francis Parker. Established in 1912, Francis Parker has campuses in Mission Hills and Linda Vista that offer education for kids of all ages. Like most private schools, Francis Parker is committed to academic excellence, but they also incorporate a global perspective into their curriculum that’s integral for a modernized education. Rounding out their curriculum is a devotion to both the arts and athletics. You might be worried about investing your kids with strict snootiness or privileged outlooks, but with great private schools like these, the only thing you have to worry about is your kids actually wanting to go to school. In a way, that’s true of all alternative schooling options available in present day. With an increased focus on individuality and reaching for success, public school officially has some hefty competition. Francis Parker is an all-ages private school determined to prepare students for success.

Accelerated Academics, Inc. Launches a Home-Based Online K–12 Private School for Gifted and Talented Students By Thea Carney Public schools may be appropriate for some students, but not everyone learns at the same rate. For those bored by the monotony of traditional classroom learning, Accelerated Academics, Inc. offers a perfect solution. This online California-based private school satellite program addresses the unique educational and personal needs of students with high intellectual and/or creative abilities. Perfect for a selfmotivated student who loves to learn, Accelerated Academics is welcoming new students into its home-based program to learn at a pace tailored for their educational goals and lifestyles. The brainchild of Dr. Jenelle Miller—a highly recognized national specialist in gifted education and a board member of the California Association for the Gifted—Accelerated Academics is the product of many years of experience in serving this unique, high-ability and talented learning community. With an emphasis on the needs and goals of their students, Accelerated Academics offers something most public schools don’t: individualization and flexibility. “We focus on the individuality of the student, and we recognize and serve their personal and academic needs with [an] intensively differentiated curriculum,” comments Dr. Miller. “Our program integrates higher-level critical thinking skills utilizing numerous ever-changing methods and a highly challenging and vigorous curriculum developed by such universities as Stanford, Johns Hopkins, William and Mary and Northwestern, along with other highly-regarded curriculum sources.” Additionally, Accelerated Academics provides an ideal learning environment for highly talented students who engage in special interests requiring either frequent travel or absence from a traditional school setting in order to pursue their activities, training and events (i.e. equestrian, performing arts, ice skating, tennis, golf, surfing, etc.).

Often overlooked in the high-ability learning community are the needs of the Twice-Exceptional (2E) learner—those students who are intellectually gifted with one or more learning disability. Accelerated Academics has a profound understanding of and experience with aiding such students in the fulfillment of their academic goals and desires. With a focus on the at-home learners and students whose needs are not being addressed in larger academic environments, Accelerated Academics is an unprecedented resource for everything from testing and evaluation to individualized learning plans and the maintenance of academic portfolios and transcripts. With individual and personal oversight, Dr. Miller and her staff meet the students exactly where they are and provide educational experiences which further develop their analytical reasoning, creative problem solving and evaluative thinking. “We assess each student and choose curriculum that responds to the characteristics distinguishing that specific learner from other types of learners,” states Dr. Miller. “In addition to individualized coursework, we serve our students’ needs through regular in-home visits where students learn within their own safe and nurturing home environment.” Parents see the difference this homeschooling program and home visits can make. Study Harder, Get Smarter Tutoring Helps Students Ace Exams and Excel in School By Julia Malkiewicz As a parent, it’s natural to want your child to take over the world. Success is a cornerstone of parental hopes and dreams, which is why achieving top marks in school is vital. From the SAT to the ACT—from AP courses to a standard course load—acing an exam or passing a class with flying colors can be a challenge in today’s hyper-competitive world. Perhaps in the good ol’ days of Kindergarten, you as a parent could pull out your trusty calculator and assist your kids with their schoolwork, but as high school looms and AP classes beckon, the detailed exams your children face may be just out of reach. This makes tutoring an attractive opportunity to give your child a leg up. Tutoring companies throughout the country help students gain the skills they need to succeed, reduce test anxieties and achieve their goals. These learning centers give students an extra push—or helping hand—that motivate them to study and try their best. From large group classes to private tutoring, there are options that fulfill the need of every student. But there is one overriding rule for tutoring: the earlier you sign your student up, the better. Many parents make the mistake of getting help for their children too late, and time is an essential component for success. Eliminating stressful deadlines and test dates prompts a willingness to learn and genuine curiosity. Brian McElroy, a Harvard graduate and founder of McElroy Tutoring in Pacific Beach, agrees that time is an important factor to improved execution. He states, “Starting earlier as opposed to later is a good idea because it reduces pressure and allows students to
48

learn at a more relaxed pace. The students who start tutoring with me early in the school year almost always perform better than do the procrastinators.” It’s never too early to begin the tutoring process, especially when it comes to the SAT or ACT. Parents push for students to start studying for these college entrance exams in their junior year, but some students start as early as freshman year! It sounds excessive, but beginning the tutoring process early is beneficial because it encourages growth. Mindlessly memorizing material in short periods of time doesn’t allow information to sink in; learning takes time, concentration and determination—not a short-term cram session. And, of course, practice makes perfect. Tutoring companies aim for perfection, and they do everything in their power to help students achieve it. One way tutoring chases perfection? At the start of each session, most companies will go over the student’s goals. Brian McElroy reflects on the importance of goal setting, especially for high school students. “Goal setting is important because it forces students to ask themselves the question ‘How good is good enough for me?’ [The] answer is often dictated by their college admission goals.” He notes, however, that goals should be tangible. “The secret to effective goal setting is to be ambitious, but also realistic. I tell my students to seek perfection, but settle for excellence. In general, I have found that I can bring my students about halfway closer to perfection from their initial diagnostic test scores.” While it’s easy as a parent to expect flawless results and 100% met goals, the most important thing
for parents to remember is that goals can be altered. Early tutoring allows an individual to set a goal and determine how realistic that objective is. A lot of tutors determine goals based on your child’s learning style. Some students are visual learners, others auditory learners. In a classroom setting, teachers tend to favor one learning style, and that particular style may not work for every individual. A good tutor targets progress centered around how the student learns best. An anonymous representative from Carmel Valley Test Prep, a tutoring company in San Diego, states, “Everybody has strengths and weaknesses. The whole point of tutoring is to identify the students’ weaknesses and convert them into strengths. With one-on-one tutoring, the tutor will act as a detective to identify the unique individualized weaknesses and work on them with the student to convert them into strengths. One-on-one by definition is individualized and will always provide a better value for the student than class-based.” With hard work, confidence and parental support, Busibyn tutoring has proven to help students excel, egasoshown Distudents Carmel Valley Test Prep. “For 2016, our earnedesan n s a average score of 33 on the ACT S and 2200 on the SAT. The average score in the U.S. is 20 on the ACT and 1500 on the SAT. This is a significant increase, but [students] need to be prepared to work hard to score high.” The gatekeepers to college, SAT and ACT scores can dramatically alter your child’s chance of acceptance into a prestigious university. While it may be tempting to sign your child up for SAT or ACT test prep alone, students learn invaluable skills Tuesday, that guide them to academic success through tutoring of 27, 2016 all types. Parents often forgetSeptember that tutoring goes far beyond Faimont Grand Del Mar the SAT or ACT; students can seek help for AP exams, the ISEE, standard or honors classes and even the GRE. For example, Varsity Tutors, a widely-revered tutoring company, offers tutoring in nearly every subject. From biology to anatomy, algebra to statistics, history to English, with perseverance and determination your students can use tutoring to eliminate poor grades. And tutoring isn’t limited to high school students; countless middle and elementary school students throughout San Diego receive assistance to stay on track or get ahead. It feels like results should appear with the wave of a magic wand—hire a tutor and prest-o change-o you have an A+ student on your hands! In reality, tutoring is merely a resource, not a quick-fix. To see tangible results, your student must be dedicated and ready to work hard, and as their parent, you need to boost their confidence. A student can memorize material perfectly, but without confidence, they can falter. Self-assurance is a key component of success, especially in the world of academics. That being said, confidence is built over time once the student has become comfortable with concepts and information. With parental support and an early start to the tutoring process, the sky’s the limit on what your child can achieve!

Fitcode brings you new comfortable jeans with ease.

What’s Your Fitcode? Know Your Number and Enjoy Jeans That Always Fit By Jess Yacovelle Nowadays, given the simplicity of online shopping, updating your wardrobe can be done in seconds. With the flick of a mouse and the click of a button, you can own an entire new ensemble from shiny Maui Jim sunglasses to knee-high black leather boots. Gone are the days of spending hours stuck inside an overcrowded and understaffed clothing store digging through racks of garments for the right size. With bunny slippers on your feet and no foundation on your face, you can now spend the day shopping to your heart’s desire, stress-free. Well, mostly stress-free. While online shopping offers easy access to products all over the country, ascertaining the proper size can be a nightmare, especially when it comes to jeans. Unlike the simplicity of a shirt or a new pair of shoes, jeans are often the hardest thing for most women to buy online because there can be a myriad of fit disasters. Jeans can be too baggy in the butt, too tight in the calves, inches too short or loose at the waist. With innumerable potential problems on the horizon, jeans feel like one garment that can’t be purchased from the comfort of your couch. The reason? Sizing across brands can vary wildly, and they follow no sensible patterns. JAG Jeans, for example, have sizes that range from 0–16; 7 For All Mankind offers sizes from 23–32. Even worse, once you’ve figured out your approximate size, there’s no guarantee the pants will fit; some brands run excessively large, others run small. With numbers that don’t add up and inconsistent sizing, accidentally ordering the wrong size isn’t a stretch. To avoid these shopping woes, many people avoid ordering jeans online and save that shopping experience for the mall. While trying things on in a store is a surefire way to get the fit you crave from your denim, it isn’t always a relaxing process. The solution? An online shopping haven that focuses not on a numerical size, but on fit. Based around the idea that every woman’s body is different and thereby flattered by different cuts of cloth, Fitcode provides users with an individualized shopping experience designed to showcase only the jeans that are likely to flatter your body. The company is co-founded by Rian Buckley, the current CEO of Fitcode and a former international model. Though Buckley graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in political science, it was her history traveling and working as a model that prompted her to delve into the entrepreneurial world. Says Buckley, “I started Fitcode after spending years in the fashion industry as a model. I noticed the disconnect between real women and the less-than-real product images. I would spend hours on set being clipped, pinned and Photoshopped to look perfect… Then I started hearing clients talk about the high rate of returns they were suffering from unhappy consumers.” It’s a relatable problem; so often the flawless fit we see on models fails to match the picture staring back at us in the mirror. With the products unable to provide a perfect fit for even the models, Buckley knew something needed to change—namely, the consumer obsession with size. “When you go shopping with your friends, you could be the same size, but that doesn’t mean the jeans will fit you in the same way. That’s why Fitcode focuses not on size, but on the fit.” The burgeoning company, about two years old, connects real users with real products that should provide the best fit based on body shapes, not size. User-friendly and quick, Fitcode prompts every new consumer to answer four easy questions about their jean-headaches: your usual size, then the shape of your waist, your booty and your legs. From there, Fitcode curates a list of jeans personally selected to correspond with your body shape,

a.k.a. jeans in your “fitcode.” The website provides everything consumers need to know about that specific brand of jeans, including how the jeans should fit, the measurements for the product and the suggested size you should order based on the results of the introductory quiz. Some of the products even include a video demonstration of a model in your fitcode wearing the jeans, allowing consumers to see how the jeans look on people with similar body types. Fitcode goes out of its way to provide a litany of tools for the average shopper to get the perfect pair of jeans on their first try. Explains Buckley, “We want to make online shopping easy and painless… By changing the focus from size to fit and including images and details about each product, Fitcode makes online shopping easier and more successful for women.” The focus is clearly on the consumers; featuring a clean website that highlights the products, Fitcode allows its users to browse for new jeans based on fabric, brands, color or even style. Another way Fitcode improves the online shopping experience is by partnering with high-end jean designers. Their collection includes jeans from companies such as Citizens of Humanity, Paige, Joe’s Jeans, Hudson, 7 For All Mankind, Frame Denim and more. Fitcode has partnered with a number of companies, and they aren’t done yet; in two years they’ve gathered 30,000 active users and approximately $1.85 million in funding to launch their business. Now, Buckley and her team are discussing what’s next on the horizon. “We’re always expanding and growing,” Buckley notes. “We really want to stick with women’s denim and master women’s denim right now, but we eventually hope to expand into men’s denim.” One way Fitcode is dominating is through their browser extension Jeanius. Designed to make shopping on other websites effortless and to help customers find the best deals, the Jeanius extension integrates the Fitcode icon onto all supported designer and retailer sites. For example, looking for curvy jeans that will hug your hips like a glove at Nordstrom? Through the Jeanius extension, all jeans made by supported designers in your fitcode will be marked for your convenience. The extension will also provide easy product information and allow you to track your favorite pairs. However the best part of the extension is that it compares prices across all supported sites to help guarantee that you get the best deal in your shopping crusade. With a thriving business built around the happiness of their consumers, Fitcode removes pain from the online shopping process. Just like trendy tops and beautiful bags, new jeans with a flawless fit are finally just the flick of a mouse and the click of a button away.

The Fall Color Report Trendy Makeup Colors for the Fall Season
1.
By Rebeccah Zuazua Fall into fashion with the latest colors! Pantone released their fall 2016 color palette, and with the chic fall colors comes a blend of bright new makeup. This fall is all about shades of blue and earth tones with a surprising pop of color in the mix. Sharkskin, Aurora Red, Dusty Cedar, Potter’s Clay and Lush Meadow by Pantone will be the colors to look for at the makeup counter this fall—enjoy stunning shades of your favorite palettes this season. 1. Although gray may seem like a winter color, this year the blueish-gray Sharkskin is taking over. Not only does gray look good as a garment color, you can play it up on your eyes too. Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Desperation (Sephora, $20) captures the Sharkskin flair. Urban Decay’s eyeliner is a great way to rock this fall color and adopt delicate eyes. Be careful with different shades of gray, as they can easily wash you out.
2.
2. Red is a year-round color, but there are too many shades of red to choose. For the fall, Aurora Red (a deep, rusty red) will look great worn as a lipstick or an eyeshadow. This color is classified as a bold, warm red and is easy on the eyes. Kat Von D’s Studded Kiss Lipstick in Archangel (Sephora, $21) is a matte burnt red that will become a staple this fall.
3.
3. A fancy name for dusty rose, Dusty Cedar is a sweet blush color for fall. Desert Rose by MAC (MAC, $22) adds a wash of color to the face. This warm, muted pink is a great transition color into fall because it still has the qualities of a summery pink. Experts agree that Dusty Cedar is a nod to Pantone’s Color of the Year, Rose Quartz. 4. Potter’s Clay––a burnt orange––is the most traditional fall color out of the bunch, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting. Nars Duo in Mediteranee (Sephora, $35) comes with a golden apricot color to complement the real star of the show, which is the burnt orange. This duo is a one-stop shop for the perfect fall eye look. Use the orange as an all over lid color, then highlight your brow bone and tear duct with the golden apricot! 5. When you think of green grass, you should think of Pantone’s Lush Meadow! A jewel tone that adds an incredible pop of color, Lush Meadow brings a spark of energy to the eye. Clinique’s Chubby Stick Shadow Tint for Eyes in teal (Sephora, $17) is the shade to reach for when lusting after a fun change that compliments anyone with blue or green eyes. Simply smudge the color under your eyes or layer it over your eyelid for an easy look.

VINEYARD VINES
With their signature pink whale popping up throughout the Atlantic seaboard, you can bet Vineyard Vines will soon swim over to the West Coast. Vineyard Vines came to life in 1998 when Shep and Ian Murray decided working behind desks in Manhattan wasn’t the life they wanted. The two quit their jobs within ten minutes of each other; overnight, Vineyard Vines was born. “‘Every day should feel this good,’ is our motto, our mantra and our way of life,” explains Shep Murray, the Vineyard Vines CEO and co-founder. It’s a motto they used in the creation of their Fall 2016 line. “Our fall collection was inspired by locations that are close to our heart,” adds co-founder Ian Murray. “We visited Martha’s Vineyard, Newport and Cuttyhunk because we wanted to bring the brand back to its roots.” Beginning with bow ties, Vineyard Vines has now grown to include an entire line of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing. From bold preppy statement pieces to basic sweaters and skirts perfect for the fall season, Vineyard Vines has something for everyone hoping to create a sophisticated look.

MARGARET THE MAKER
Finding inspiration in her grandmother, Margaret the Maker constructs unique fashion suitable for every occasion. Corinne Walsh, the designer and seamstress behind the label, has a history of traveling the world and maintaining costumes for Broadway musicals—perhaps that’s why Walsh’s creations have a flair for the dramatic. Through her designs, Walsh seeks to accentuate women’s bodies by incorporating a wide variety of textile techniques and hand-stitching into every garment. The new collection features soft colors combined with her signature hard edge.
DAVID MEISTER
With simple, clean and sexy styles, David Meister creates tantalizing gowns that have been donned by countless celebrities as they grace the red carpet, including Demi Lovato, Sophia Bush, Tina Fey and Amy Pohler. With star-studded patrons and expensive couture looks, you’d think Meister would feel pressure to always create something new, but Meister’s innovation knows no bounds. “Inspiration comes from everywhere,” Meister tells us. “It can be fabric, a print or a sketch. It can come from music or a great sunset. There are so many beautiful things all around us that can ignite a spark.” Meister’s history with couture design is vast; he began his career creating evening wear, though Meister has now expanded his multiple lines to include day dresses, cocktail attire and red-carpet gowns. When asked why his dresses are so popular, Meister muses, “There is a sense of timelessness to my work, which I feel is the true test of a good designer.” With elegance, opulence and a sophisticated charm, David Meister’s fall line includes floor-length stunners perfect for your next charity gala.

W.B. THAMM
W.B.THAMM is a playful, classic and contemporary haberdashery that originates in New York City. The line was created by Prangchat Sathianthammawit, otherwise known as Deedee. The last name may be difficult to remember (or spell!) but the accessories of W.B. THAMM are more than memorable. “My original thought was that I’d like to design classic pieces like bowties and neckties,” Deedee says. Far from a classic bowtie or necktie, each piece has a personality all its own. What makes these designs stand out from other lines are the contrasting colors and patterns—these pieces take any boring button-down and instantly make the wearer look runway-worthy. Stripes, florals, plaid and more coat the W.B. THAMM handcrafted and individually cut ties. Pair with a suit or a high-end buttondown shirt for a polished presentation.

Pam and Hal Fuson.
PHOTOS COURTESY OF BOB ROSS Steve Martin’s absurdist new comedy Meteor Shower premiered at The Old Globe on August 7th to roars of laughter. Starring Jenna Fischer (The Office), Greg Germann (Ally McBeal), Alex Henrikson (Broadway’s The Snow Geese) and Josh Stamberg (The Affair), the premiere event had theatre-lovers flocking to their seats. Running through September 18th, Meteor Shower drums up the unexpected when Norm and his wife Corky invite another couple to their Ojai backyard to watch a meteor shower in the night sky. As the stars come out and the conversation gets rolling, cocktails flow, tempers flare and sparks fly—literally. (cont. on p.76)

CHANGING SEASONS
New Concerts and Productions Grace the San Diego Stage By Jess Yacovelle
F
all isn’t the only new season rolling into town; a new season of theatre and music is emerging as well. After a brief summer hiatus, the performing arts have come roaring back into town. While some of our illustrious performing arts companies have taken a longer break between seasons than others (The Old Globe didn’t pause at all!), new shows and concerts are quickly being staged as the 2016–17 theatre scene dawns. Jump straight into show-time; stay up-to-date with the latest and greatest here in San Diego. From charity galas to musical productions, it’s time to kick off the new season!
CITY BALLET OF SAN DIEGO City Ballet of San Diego has been on hiatus since May when they closed out their 2015–16 season with Romeo and Juliet. Come November 4th, however, they are back and better than ever with four more spectacular ballets. December will showcase the traditional Nutcracker, and March brings Balanchine and Beyond to Spreckels. However, City Ballet will kick off the new season with Esmeralda and the Hunchback, a dramatic blend of classical and contemporary ballet based on Victor Hugo’s novel. Not willing to wait until November for a City Ballet fix? The IlluminAsia 24th Anniversary Gala will take place at Hotel Del Coronado on October 22nd. Enjoy music from The Mighty Untouchables, a multi-course dinner, a silent auction and a performance by City Ballet company dancers. With grace that flows through the dancers from the crown of their heads to the pointed toes of their feet, City Ballet brings classical dance to the stage. (cont. on p.80)

SAN DIEGO OPERA After a rocky year in 2014 when San Diego Opera almost shut its doors and stopped producing their world-class shows, the 52 year old company has bounced back with a vengeance. Thanks in large part to passionate board members and a crowdfunding effort that gathered donations from all over the country, San Diego Opera is alive and well. Though the company was forced to downsize a little in order to keep their doors open, San Diego Opera has proven that they can create incredible productions no matter the circumstances. After a very successful 2015–16 year—which saw the performance of two Giacomo Puccini operas, Tosca and Madama Butterfly—San Diego Opera is set to debut their 2016–17 season on October 22nd with Gioachino Rossini’s version of the classic fairytale Cinderella. THE OLD GLOBE While The Old Globe performs almost year-round, their summer season is coming to a close. The proverbial curtain is about to come down on Steve Martin’s hysterical new comedy Meteor Shower, and the outdoor summer Shakespeare series will end on the 18th of September. With nary a pause, The Old Globe is diving into their 2016–17 season by kicking things off with October Sky, a west coast premiere musical. Set in the 1950s, October Sky tells the story of a small town that scorns the notion of future aspirations… until Sputnik launches and one determined high school student decides to build a rocket of his own. Then, on September 24th, The Old Globe’s annual gala will take over Copley Plaza. Featuring an exclusive cabaret performance by Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr, this black tie event will help raise money for The Globe’s future seasons. With dinner, dancing and a sensational performance, the 2016 Globe Gala is a sophisticated bash for the new season.

“A MODEST THEATRE WHERE EVERY SEAT IN THE HOUSE IS STELLAR, NORTH COAST REP IS A PERFECT PLACE TO ENJOY ANYTHING FROM CLASSIC HITS TO FRESH NEW PLAYS.” SAN DIEGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Since its inception in 1910, the San Diego Symphony Orchestra has performed thousands of concerts for lucky locals. With 140 concerts each year, the performers at the heart of the San Diego Symphony play a wide range of classical symphonic music including new work and traditional masterpieces. The 2016–17 season of the Jacobs Masterworks will commence on October 14th with a trio of favorites: William Schuman’s American Festival Overture, Felix Mendelssohn’s violin concerto and Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 3. The opening concert will be conducted by Jahja Ling, the company’s music director. This season will be Ling’s last with the San Diego Symphony—his farewell performance will close out the season in May—after thirteen years leading the company. But prior to the kickoff of their current season, San Diego Symphony’s Opus Gala—featuring a dinner at The University Club atop Symphony Towers and a Michael Feinstein and Cheyenne Jackson concert—will be held on October 8th. NORTH COAST REPERTORY THEATRE A modest theatre where every seat in the house is stellar, North Coast Rep is a perfect place to enjoy anything from classic hits to fresh new plays. You may have last seen North Coast Rep perform the famous musical Ain’t Misbehavin’ to close out their recent season. A cornerstone of the Solana Beach community, North Coast Repertory Theatre’s 35th season is scheduled to dawn on September 7th with The Cocktail Hour, an A.R. Gurney comedy that tells the story of privileged, upper-class new Englanders and their spoiled children. Other productions scheduled to premiere include comedy Neil Simon’s Laughter on the 23rd Floor, family drama Majorie Prime and contemporary piece The Illusion. Featuring a season with seven new productions underway, North Coast Rep brings fun, energetic shows to town.
From top: San Diego Opera’s next season begins in October; The Old Globe’s new season starts September 10th; San Diego Symphony brings classical music to life; North Coast Repertory Theatre prepares a hilarious show.

THE CHOICES WE MAKE CAN LAST A LIFETIME
M By Brando Fontaine
y father told me many times while I was growing up that there are two things you are born with and one you can achieve in your lifetime. Everyone is born with honesty and integrity, and everyone has the ability to achieve a good education. Many of you as parents have transferred your children to either private schools or charter schools to make sure your children are getting the best education you can provide. Some of you may have gone one step further and begun homeschooling your kids. Homeschooling is a very involved process; many parents don’t feel up to the task, which is why companies like Accelerated Academics have come to their rescue and provided the resources and help they need to succeed. The reason for this shift in education trends, in my belief, is that schools are moving away from the well-rounded education the older generations received and are currently collapsing into a one-size-fitsall approach. Class sizes are bigger, sometimes unruly, and there is a new, sometimes inept, common core curriculum. STEM classes (science, technology, engineering and math) are now mandatory, while the arts and humanities fade into the background. With college competition at its fiercest and test scores now the linchpin of school funding, we’re burning out our kids by teaching them not to learn but to pass a standardized test. A greater emphasis is on cramming and forgetting information than on retaining it and growing as an individual. Another reason for this shift away from traditional public schools is the degree of social engineering now integrated into classrooms. For example, some school systems implemented bans on the pronouns “he” or “she,” asking instead that students refer to their classmates as “xe” or “xer.” There are now 58 gender identifiers to cover the spectrum, and if you use the wrong one in speaking with someone, that could be viewed as a form of micro-aggression—students could be punished or even suspended. Religion has become another flash point within our schools. God is now all but banned on campus. Students have been suspended for bringing a Bible to class, and praying before the big game is no longer allowed at a public institution. Instead of focusing on academics and studying history or math, schools are prioritizing gender identities and social equality. And while we certainly don’t want outright discrimination or bullying to plague our schools, this increased attention on social—some might say political—issues detracts from the whole reason children attend school in the first place: to learn. This is just the tip of the colossal iceberg of reasons for placing your child in an education program that shares your values, has a curriculum engaging to your children’s interests and offers a well-rounded educational experience. What you do now will prepare your child for the lifetime of challenges they will inevitably face over the next sixty years. So take a look around and see if there might be something better for your child—it may be the greatest gift you can give them.
