Southern California. But instead of a buzz from that Fall themed latte, San Diegans are buzzing about the Breeders’ Cup coming to Del Mar. It is a major privilege for the city of San Diego to host the Breeders’ Cup for the first time ever! San Diego’s vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches and sunny days create a perfect trifecta for The Breeders’ Cup. And as soon as the summer hot spots slowed down, businesses all over San Diego have been prepping to host our Breeders’ Cup guests in true San Diego style. Even the San Diego real estate market has been bustling to wow visitors from far and wide, tempting them with the Southern California dream of living on the golden coast. Fall also signifies a time of gratitude and warmth. s the world’s finest thoroughbred horses explode through the starting line at the Breeders’ Cup World Championship, a surge of excited anticipation will command Del Mar’s track. It’s the first time Del Mar will showcase the championship; and while it’s no stranger to the thrill of a horse’s allure or its unique racing capabilities, its status is about to be elevated to one worthy of international recognition. Naturally, the CEO of the prestigious Breeders’ Cup, Craig Fravel, is elated. “It’s such a thrill to watch the finest horses and racers. excellence and the glamor of the event’s star-studded parties. A horse depicts majesty. A creature born with the finest of equine attributes, the horse has aided humanity through history with grace, grandeur and the necessity of travel. Today, we find we’re still just as attached to their appeal whether they’re racing in championships or allowing a child to gaze into their deep eyes. So, when breeders’ from central Kentucky created the Breeders’ Cup in 1984, the bet that it would be as captivating as the animal itself won. Since then, the championship quickly sprinted off into what is now considered the most important part of the racing calendar.


“It’s really the quality of the horses and the incredible international variety of them,” Fravel muses. Indeed, horses from all over the world, including France, Peru and Ireland (just to name a few) make their debut at the starting line. There are 13 races during the two-day affair where as Fravel explains “each and every horse represents the best of their quality.” This is the gold lining of horse racing; the creme de la creme of what’s often hailed as the equine venue of the year. Or, as Fravel sums it up, “The Breeders’ Cup is the Superbowl and Olympics of horse racing.” But, Fravel acknowledges that the relationship between horse and human is far more important than only racing is concerned. Many people find great comradeship with a multitude of animals; but when it comes to horses, we often find a preeminent connection. In fact, when it comes to the history of people and their favored horse, there’s often an almost magical tale. From Greek mythology and folklore to the celebration of horse and cowboy, we find the beast connects to humans on a level that for many is instinctual. “People have an affinity with horses. The history of people and horses goes back so far, there’s a visceral connection,” Fravel says. So visceral a connection in fact, that today many of the Breeders’ Cup horses are

showered with gifts from their human friends. Horses such as Best Pal and Zenyatta (to name a few) receive fan mail, flowers and cards. And of course, if permitted, admirers who come by to visit them. Last year’s Breeders’ Cup winner, Arrogate, is another spellbinding horse with numerous fans. Arrogate’s athleticism and heart sets him apart from other competitors. As manager of Juddmonte Farms, Garrett

O’Rourke explains, “Arrogate is a spectacular looking horse. He’s steel gray with a tremendous aura and energy. He’s one of those horses that when you look at him, he looks like a war horse. He’s an iconic equine star.” Indeed, Arrogate’s championship win last year at Santa Anita Park proves as much—he carries his title with pride. “He’s quite an energetic horse, but he’s big and he’s an eyeful. He looks important and he

carries himself as if he’s important. I think he knows he’s the best horse in the world.” For a worldwide top-ranking horse, Arrogate is appropriately proud of his accomplishments. As is his dedicated jockey, Mike Smith. Together, they make an intense team. One which many fans can’t wait to watch race again. This year’s Breeders’ Cup already has Del Mar fired up for a memorable two-day extravaganza. Horsing Around In San Diego San Diego’s best horse trails & equine events exposed! Saddle-up! By Michael Citrin

D

el Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Olivenhain, Escondido and San Marcos all share a part in the many facets of the exciting horse business. San Diego County is home to trail riding, ring riding, racing and the show circuit… get your highlighter out, we’re taking a ride through them all.

We’ll begin with one popular equine event called dressage; it’s also known as the “dancing” element of equitation where horses and riders must pass tests with panels of qualified judges. In fact, San Diego is home to most of America’s Olympic riders. Even the University of California has a riding division within its campus on the outskirts of Ran-

cho Santa Fe. There is barrel racing, which is on some level the “gymnastic quadrant” of equitation with time and accuracy of hoof placement to manipulate tight turns around barrels. There is also Team Penning where riders must select numbered cows from a herd in a team effort and corral the individual number selected while competing with other teams for times and points. Both remind us of the wide diversity of events in which horses excell. And then, of course, there is the horse racing circuit for which Del Mar is so widely known and popular. Naturally, all the elite in equine racing follow the Breeders’ Cup—San Diegans are both proud and lucky to host this race at the Del Mar track for the first time. For those who would rather saddle-up themselves find San Diego County offers a wide variety of stellar trails. One is the Coast to Crest trail system which starts in the perimeter of south Del Mar and works its way east through to the community of Crest some 60 miles. And while there are some interrupted portions, dedicated volunteers will ultimately connect the trail. Actually, The Lake Hodges trail system is part of this network and the views are simply phenomenal. For more exceptional views, there are the coveted bark covered view trails through the Covenant of Rancho Santa Fe. The terrain interlaces around 50 miles of trails through canyons, alongside mansions, the golf course and clubhouse. However, these trails are private for the members of the neighborhood’s Homeowner’s Association and their guests. No worries, there are plenty of public trails including the San Elijo Lagoon trail which feels like one is riding onto the set of an idyllic “National Geographic” feature. And to the south there is the beach as you ride along the Pacific Ocean at the Tijuana Estuary this side of the border. This is a true delight.

Other notable trails include the Penasquitas Canyon, parts of Carmel Valley and Del Mar Mesa. There’s also Solana Beach which has upper and lower San Dieguito Park. Plus, Olivenhain has a well-developed system accessed off Lone Jack Road heading up through Spook’s Canyon and beyond along parts of the Escondido Creek. Also impres sive is The Elfin Forest Recreational Preserve. It has terrifc and challenging trails with multiple loops and views of Lake Hodges and the Pacific Ocean. It hosts some of the most commanding and panoramic views in all of San Diego County. Even Dixon Lake has awesome trails. Lastly, do keep in mind that Valley Center also has some fascinating view trails. Please contact your local trail master or myself for more information. Now we’ll switch lassos to discuss the incredible shows available in America’s Finest City. There’s the National Horse Show at the San Diego County Fairgrounds in Del Mar plus many shows are held at Show Park, owned by the State of California. Additionally, we have the popular Polo Fields which are actually owned by the City of San Diego. Plus, there are training facilities all over the county. Opportunity awaits! Looking for a vet for your horse, dog or llama? Well, excellent veterinary representation is in abundance all throughout San Diego County. There are even ‘equestrian service animals’ through the Helen Woodward Animal Center. Want to just trail a horse and buggy?- simply take a ride along Del Dios Highway, but don’t be surprised if you get stuck behind a horse trailer. One needs to be patient! Indeed, it’s a slow grade up to the mesa on the way to Interstate 15. This is your official warning. Whatever your preference, San Diego is home to many horse enthusiasts and a farm of activities. H

ygge (pronounced hue-gah) is a Danish-term that describes a feeling of pleasure derived from simple acts of daily life. From making a cup of coffee to lighting a candle, hygge encompasses the happiness we find in the little things. For the Danes, this act of choosing pleasure in small, daily rituals helps combat winter, which for Denmark involves many months of cold, dark nights. While there’s no direct translation in English, we can closely relate the term to words like

“comfort” and “cozy.” According to The New Yorker, hygge is derived from the Norwegian word hugga, meaning “to comfort” and is related to the English word for “hug.” In a way, snuggling up with a soft blanket, a mug of hot chocolate and an old favorite movie can feel like a hug—and that’s the idea of hygge. This feeling isn’t absent outside of Scandinavia. In America, it probably comes along, say, around Christmastime each year. But here, where being busy is exalted and little things are happily overlooked in favor of big picture items like advancing a career and buying a new home, it seems like the mindset of hygge could never belong. Wrong. Hygge surprisingly found a

niche, and a big one at that, across the pond last year and the idea became increasingly popular. Books, articles, and design trends galore sprouted up, especially in the wake of winter. It should be emphasized that hygge is not a thing or a trend; it’s not bought, given or lost—it is a mindset. One must actively choose to find happiness in a pair of warm socks and a fireplace, despite the stress of the day or the winter storm raging outside. However, there are a few ways to encourage that cozy feeling this season by creating comfortable spaces in your home and making tedious tasks enjoyable. Here’s what we recommend to feel happy and hygge in the coming months. Who knows—maybe you’ll actually enjoy winter this year. MAKE A CUP OF TEA (OR COFFEE) Skip the Starbucks line for a day and make something special for yourself. This means no tea bag or instant coffee either. Put on a kettle and properly brew a cup of loose leaf tea or fresh ground coffee. Sometimes it helps to pour your warm drink into a favorite mug or a pretty teacup. COZY UP THE LIVING ROOM Part of hygge is connection with loved ones and friends. interior designers, the all-white trend is nothing new to home design. As with most trends, the style is cyclical from the mid-90’s, a time period where the feverish 80’s were calming and society sought modernism. During this period, home design transitioned into something toned down and embraced the aesthetics of Greek, Japanese, Scandinavian and Moroccan interiors. While the all-white trend embodied the zeitgeist, the once-popular style has revived into current interior designs thanks to visual inspirations from Instagram and Pinterest. Apart from social media, the trend also stemmed from the 2014 bestselling novel, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Society marveled in Marie Kondo’s feng shui how-to and while the underlying concept of keeping a clean space seems palpable, the idea of decluttering has transcended into home design. The design can be perceived as cost-effective, for less becomes more when decorating. It can also be surmised that embracing a white décor can make the home design process easier. I

n San Diego’s modern luxury homes, every detail has the opportunity to be beautiful. Of course, there are the grandiose structures that make a house envy-inducing, like stately columns, ocean-view balconies or swimming pools. But even the seemingly mundane features can become works of art. In many luxury homes, artfully crafted details like designer sink and shower faucets are common and serve to add an extra element of refinery and elegance. Alex Miller, a local San Diego artist and architect, creates those feature fixtures full time and is incredibly passionate about his work. “Most faucets are decorated pipes,” Miller says. “I didn’t want it to feel that way.” Instead, Miller takes his inspiration straight from the ocean. His influence derives from water’s shape and surface, the curve of waves and the pull of tides. As a lifelong San Diegan, Miller grew up near the ocean and says he

has always felt the need to include the look and feel of water in his work. It’s fitting that he now styles faucets, which of course, carry water—the very element that inspires their design. “Faucets made a lot of sense to me because I spend a lot of time in water,” Miller says. “My dreams are inspired by the water and the sky. It just made sense to harness my skill to make faucets.” Though he’s been making them for three years, Miller didn’t always have home fixtures in mind. He says he had been drawing and building things his whole life, and always knew he would become an architect. Miller attended Tulane University for his degree, and began his career working for a large firm after graduating. However, he discovered right away that corporate architecture wasn’t the right path. Instead, Miller found that he was far more interested in organic projects and

inspired by the natural world and its fascinating cycles. “Water has a magical story,” Miller says. “For me, the ocean is the beginning and the end of the cycle, but that’s where it’s really coming from. The surface of the ocean is evaporating into the sky and comes back down as rain.” His work evokes the movement, rhythm, and vibrancy of the water cycle, as well as maintains a luxury look and feel. The faucets are expertly crafted with care, beginning first as a clay prototype, then transformed into three-dimensional computer models, and finally cast in brass and coated in various high-quality finishes, like brushed nickel and 24 karat gold. Each design is made to be a unique and stunning part of the home—not just a decorative detail, but a functional and artistic one as well. “In architecture school, they teach that there should be a

reason for every line that you draw,” Miller says. “If you do that, then we all end up living in boxes. By focusing on justifying every line, we forget to make things beautiful.” Miller is a rare cross between left-brained architect and right-brained artist, but the blend of both worlds is what brings functionality to art, and vice versa. In a way, art and architecture need each other. Though he balances both well, Miller does consider himself more of an artist, preferring the creative process over an intellectual one. He says he is directly inspired by dreams, nature and sculpture. Miller says, “The faucet in your home should be a sculpture as well, marking the celebration of having this precious resource available at your fingertips.” His artful and inspiring pieces do just that, commemorating water’s place in our daily lives, and complementing any modern home with a touch of nature.

Originally inspired by plaster models at a French flea market, Meier felt drawn to enhance uniquely shaped accent pieces with Brean’s unique textures and colors. The result? The Amy Meier Collection. Together the duo synergistically created sculptural shapes with a textural twist. By incorporating surfaces that tease the tactile impulse, Brean added an aged and distressed gesso finish fusing motifs of old and new. Ultimately, Meier’s geometric shapes bring the art gallery into one’s home with the look of both modern and ancient discernment. FIRE AND LIGHT Forever stretching the imagaination, Stone Yard’s Fire tables and bowls light up the night while inspiring ongoing beauty by day. – 6 ounces distilled water – 3 bags organic hibiscus tea – 1 ounce witch hazel – 1/4 cup organic rose water – 1/2 teaspoon vitamin C powder

You can refrigerate for a longer shelf life. Use this toner morning and night after washing your face. PUMPKIN, PAPAYA HONEY MASK This is a powerful enzyme mask for all skin types that dissolves dead skin cells, reduces inflammation, prevents acne, tightens pores, softens lines and combats free radicals. It’s rich in phytonutrients, alpha hydroxy acids, antioxidants, vitamins A, C, K, E and healing minerals such as Zinc. INGREDIENTS:

Bring six ounces of water to a boil, then turn off heat and add three organic hibiscus tea bags. Steep for 20 minutes. Remove teabags. Add one ounce of alcohol free witch hazel, rose water and vitamin C powder. Transfer to a small spray bottle and use within two weeks.

Only a small amount is needed for your mask, so the rest can be added to an ice cube tray, frozen, then transferred to a freezer ziplock bag for future individual use. Just take one cube out when needed, allow to thaw, then apply to face. Mask can be left on for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse with cool water and a gentle cleanser. Can be used twice per week. OATMEAL, CANE SUGAR, HONEY AND LEMON SCRUB For those that love manual exfoliation, this scrub is for you! Not only does it stimulate circulation, but it also leaves your skin hydrated, brighter, silky soft and with a beautiful glow! INGREDIENTS:

– 1 cup organic fine cane sugar – 1/2 cup organic oatmeal – 1/2 cup organic jojoba oil – 1/4 cup raw organic honey – 1 tbsp organic lemon juice

Pulse oatmeal in a blender until a flour is made. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and transfer to an airtight jar or container. Apply scrub to face and use gentle and light circular sweeping motions across the skin (your fingers are just the vehicle to move the scrub around, so do not press hard into skin) to remove dead skin cells. Rinse and follow with a gentle cleanser. Note: this is also a fantastic treatment for chafed, dry lips! Can be used two to

three times per week. YOGURT, HONEY, LEMON MASK I love this alpha hydroxy acid and probiotic rich mask for brightening skin tone, reducing sun spots and keeping breakouts at bay. Yogurt contains lactic and gently dissolves dead skin layers, while nourishing the skin with probiotics. Lemons contain citric acid and loads of vitamin C which smoothes, brightens and lightens the complexion. While honey is healing, hydrating and antibacterial. A beautiful combination. INGREDIENTS:

– 1 tbsp whole organic Greek yogurt – 1 tbsp organic raw honey – 1/2 tsp organic lemon juice (or 1/4 tsp for sensitive skin)

Combine all the ingredients and smooth mixture over your face. Avoid contact with the eye area. Leave the mask on for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse off with cool water. Can be used two to three times a week. COFFEE GROUND SCRUB It tightens and tones while increasing circulation and providing antioxidants to the skin. When applied religiously, it has been shown to reduce cellulite! INGREDIENTS:

– 1/2 cup organic coffee grounds – 1/2 cup raw cane sugar

In the shower, apply your scrub to areas with cellulite. Massage the scrub onto skin in a circular motion before rinsing. Repeat every time you shower for best results! WHIPPED COCONUT BODY BUTTER This super light and fluffy moisturizer will delay the occurrence of wrinkles, as coconut strengthens skin with its rich content of vitamin E. Plus, its antiviral and antifungal properties will quickly soothe and heal irritated skin as well. Apply after showering and it will leave you smelling lovely with satiny-soft, hydrated, healthy skin! INGREDIENTS:

– 1 cup organic coconut oil – 6-10 (or more) drops of your favorite essential oils for fragrance

Put all ingredients into a mixing bowl. Coconut oil must be in solid form in order to whip. Mix on high speed for six to seven minutes or until whipped into a light airy consistency. Spoon mixture into an airtight jar. Store at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

How did Birchbox get started? Our co-founders Katia Beauchamp and Hayley Barna were in business school when they noticed that beauty —which is an enormous global industry—was under-penetrated online. They saw a huge opportunity to build a company that could sell beauty online, effectively. Now Birchbox has more than 1 million subscribers and 4 million total customers.
 On a personal level, they wondered why was it so hard to have a great beauty buying experience if one isn’t as passionate about beauty as the next person. If one doesn’t obsess over beauty and doesn’t enjoy researching the latest launches, they still deserve to get the best products. They still want to look beautiful and still want to spend money on things they love and things that work. Our co-founders thought, how could we give people the

confidence to purchase online? So they created a business model around the concept of taking something you have historically received for free—samples— and making them more relevant and enjoyable while asking you to pay for them.  Do you ever include items like beauty tools, nail care, and bath items? Or is it strictly hair, skin, and makeup? Our regular monthly boxes can include samples from hair, skincare, body (i.e. location, scrubs), makeup, and fragrance. We also carry standalone limited-edition boxes and kits you can buy online for a great value that may include lifestyle items such as a hair styler, apparel, etc. The products go along with that box/kit’s theme. Our


e-commerce shop sells tools like curling irons, blowdryers, etc. and lifestyle items like water bottles, etc. What’s the process behind choosing the products in each month’s box? Does everyone get the same box? A core part of what we do is personalize the boxes to each subscriber’s individual needs. When you subscribe you fill out a beauty profile noting your hair type, skin type, skin concerns, etc. Our fancy algorithms make sure the samples are as relevant/useful to each customer as possible. After receiving a box of samples, subscribers can go to the web store and purchase full-size beauty products of their favorites. Can a subscriber request a specific sample in their next box? Our “sample choice” feature lets subscribers choose one of their samples for their next monthly box. We’re also

testing a concept called Birchbox Select that gives customers more control over their discovery experience. If you know you want something specific, now you can get to that product faster. We were taken aback by how interested people were in having more control in their selection experience so we’re continuing to iterate on this idea. Birchbox also caters to men with Birchbox Man. What inspired the company to appeal to men as well? Birchbox just celebrated five years of its men’s subscription box. After the initial success of our women’s subscriptions, we tested a limited-edition box of men’s grooming and lifestyle products during the 2011 holiday season and it sold out in just three days. Even more surprising, the customers were mostly men buying for themselves. It was clear to us that men were looking for a new, easy way to learn about and purchase high-quality grooming products. We just launched a $10 monthly box that features five personalized grooming samples across hair, skincare, shave/ beard, body, and fragrance. They might also receive shampoo, facial moisturizers, deodorant, or beard oil. We also have our $20 BirchboxMan Plus monthly box that includes five grooming samples and one lifestyle item (i.e. wallet, pocket square, tech gadget, etc.). The holidays have some cool limited-edition boxes coming up. Are these strictly a holiday thing?

How often do limited edition boxes occur? What makes these boxes special? We have about 10-12 limited-edition boxes throughout the year, but our holiday limited edition boxes are little different this year. We are selling two holiday limited-edition boxes leading up to holiday called “Toast to the Host” and “Time To Dazzle” that will include full-size items, lifestyle accessories, and more products overall. We’re also excited to be launching for the first time ever, our “Countdown to Beauty” Advent Calendar. Tell me about the advent calendar box. What does that entail? In May of last year, inspired by the success of the fashion side of her blog and a lifelong dream, Rachel successfully started her own clothing line, the Rachel Parcell collection. I’d like to start by saying that I love your blog, follow your Instagram, and your adorable fashion line. Would you start by explaining to our readers how you took a blog, initially meant for your family and friends, and transformed it into a diverse blog with a focus on fashion?

Will you tell our readers where the name “Pink Peonies” came from? Pink has always been my favorite color and peonies are one of my favorite flowers. So, I put the two together to create “Pink Peonies” and it stuck! For young girls inspired by your blog and wanting to blog themselves, what would be your one piece of advice? It may sound cliché, but “be yourself.” In this competitive world, we live in, it’s important to try not to compare ourselves and to just be content with ourselves and the life we have. What made you decide to take your fashion blog to the next level by starting your own clothing line? I always knew I wanted a clothing line of my own—it has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. When I launched my blog I never would have dreamed it would have grown so fast and so large, but when it did I knew it would be the perfect platform to help launch my childhood dream of having a clothing line, now I had built-in customers.

How do you find time to balance your work as a fulltime blogger & fashion designer with your work as a mother?

Not long after I started my blog, our wedding was featured on the cover of Utah Valley Brides Magazine and that’s when I started seeing more and more traffic on my little space of the internet. My wedding photos were being pinned (and repinned) and I started receiving fashion questions from women all over the country. They were more interested in what top I was wearing or what shade of lipstick I had on than what my husband and I were doing that weekend. That’s really what sparked the idea to change my focus and make Pink Peonies more of a fashion blog.

I’ve worked out a schedule where I keep all my work projects, meetings, and photo shoots on the same days every week so that when I’m home I can actually be home and focus on being with my children, rather than trying to multitask. I make time to work so I can focus and get it done. I start every morning with a workout (or a run) with my neighborhood girlfriends then come home, get my babies up, and make breakfast. Then I get ready for either a photo shoot for the blog or a shoot for my clothing line. Afterward, I have meetings (and more meetings), brand conference calls, scheduling calls, and planning upcoming projects and collaborations with my team. Do you have any tips for other parents trying to balance personal life with multiple work projects? What are some of your personal tips for time management? Balancing work life and personal life can be a struggle. I don’t have a typical 9-5 job and so much of it, especially when it comes to blogging, is my everyday life. I’m constantly brainstorming and creating new content for my audience. It’s something I love and am truly passionate about so getting out of “work-mode” is difficult sometimes, but try to remember what’s most important and take breaks and time for yourself. You’ll be happier and more effective! What are your plans for your clothing line in the future? We recently launched all our fall styles for Rachel Parcell Inc. and are looking forward to releasing our holiday collection as well! Right now, my amazing team and I are working hard to roll out our designs for next summer and fall. It’s crazy how far ahead you have to plan when creating and founding a clothing line. But we are excited for what the future holds!

WHAT’S IN A CHARDONNAY Chardonnay is Landmark’s first love with the 2014 Overlook providing a gentle seduction for all white wine lovers who imbibe. A deep appreciation for the Overlook offers a delicious tease before sliding down one’s throat. Delicate but far from shy, the 2014 whole cluster press batches are allowed to settle for a day. Then, the 100% Chardonnay varietal spontaneously ferments in French oak barrels, aging for 10 months after. With a keen eye, vintner Greg Stach ensures the hand-harvested and hand-sorted fruit is premium batched, “representing the best of the vintage.” Released in 2016, this Chardonnay’s tasting notes render Meyer lemon tart, marzipan, almonds, pear, honeysuckle with a delicate vanilla hint on the nose. And the palate? Apricot, clover honey and toast tantalize the tongue in perfect pitch with a “zippy acidity and bright minerality.” Exceedingly popular, the winery ships chardonnay to all 50 states in the U.S, at both the wholesale and Club levels. PINOT NOIR WITH PANACHE For the red wine lover, Landmark’s 2014 Overlook Pinot Noir does not disappoint. Relentlessly perfecting his craft, Stach flexed his muscle to create a spir-

ited and robust Pinot. It’s stand-up-andtake-notice-flavor showcases the elegant fragrance of molasses, cherry, spearmint, black tea, cranberry and plum on the nose. It is then followed with a slowly savored sluicing of gingerbread spice, red raspberry and grilled mushroom, before a lingering finish of mocha, black tea and the “earthy forest floor.” Also aged for 10 months, the mixture has undergone daily “hand punch downs” to perfect this single vineyard lot final blend. Matchmaking, Equestrian Club & Foundation—The Perfect Trifecta By Emily Fawcett HELLO, LOVE Love was in the air during a recent afternoon with Irene Valenti at the Valenti Estate in Rancho Santa Fe, headquarters for the Valenti Equestrian Club. A gentle wind blew through the tall eucalyptus trees as a groom brought hay for handsome new resident, Zealous Tale. “He is still figuring things out and getting settled,” said Ms. Valenti, Valenti International Founder and President. “We are so glad Zealous Tale is here with us – he is quite a character. He has a big personality and everybody loves him,” she said, feeding him a handful of treats while impeccably dressed from head to toe in cream. Horses have always been close to Ms. Valenti’s heart, both at home in her Equestrian Club and through her charitable foundation. Zealous Tale, a thoroughbred and former racehorse, suffered a broken sesamoid during a routine warm-up. Once recovered, he returned to training, but unfortunately came up sore. His owners decided to retire him, ending his promising racing career. With the help of current owner, Del Mar resident Bing Bush Jr., Zealous Tale’s story has a happy ending. Zealous Tale is now in his second career as a successful hunter jumper. And he has a lovely life here at the Valenti Equestrian Club. 27 HORSES One of the largest charitable undertakings for Ms. Valenti was her personal involvement in the rescuing of 27 neglected and malnourished American Arabian horses. Ms. Valenti received a call from a woman north of Santa Barbara who was in desperate need to find a home—not homes, plural, but a singular home for her 27 horses. Not daunted by the task, Ms. Valenti quickly recruited individuals willing to help. Volunteers escorted the horses off donated trailers to their new home. A truckload of hay arrived and veterinarians, dentists, and farriers all showed up to assist. They never asked for a single dime for their services. “We never thought to take photos of everything that was happening. It was unbelievable. The trailers kept arriving, and the horses were coming out starving and very frightened. It was a team effort for certain,” shares Ms. Valenti. And although she credits the close-knit horse community with stepping up and helping when needed, it was Irene Valenti who assembled that army, by simply picking up the phone. Her passion for helping is unrelenting and powerful. Having grown up on a small farm, Ms. Valenti is happiest surrounded by animals. In addition to the horses, local squirrels, ducks and birds all come out to greet visitors at the Valenti Estate, which also serves as home to Valenti Matchmaking. Taking the Reins from Gary Stevens to be a Jockey for a Day By Corey Levitan

Standing 5-foot-6 with a voice that

sounds like I inhaled helium, I always felt a pull toward horse racing. It’s the world’s only sport I may actually be too tall to qualify for. “Your belly’s in the way!” Gary Stevens screams in the jockey exercise room at Del Mar Racetrack, where my training begins at 6:30 a.m. on the Equicizer, the mechanical horse on which Tobey

Maguire trained to be a pretend jockey for the 2003 movie Seabiscuit. To celebrate San Diego’s first turn hosting the Breeders’ Cup on November 3rd and 4th, I decided to find out what makes jockeys tick as one of them for a day. And I have none other than legendary Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, who won 11 Breeders’ Cups, train me.



“You’re supposed to lean forward toward the neck with your ass off the saddle,” Stevens continues, laughing as he gives up before even turning the machine on, “but your belly’s in the way! “Are you kidding me?” Stevens retired in 2005, after reaching 5,000 race victories. Then he spent several years in Hollywood, where his credits included parts in Seabiscuit and the 2011 HBO miniseries Luck. Seven years later, he slipped back into the irons. “I was bored,” he says. “I liked acting, but it was getting a little bit monotonous. I had the itch to come back, and my body felt good.” At age 50, Stevens became the oldest jockey to win a Breeders’ Cup on a horse called Mucho Macho Man at Santa Anita. It’s a record he hopes to break again next month in Del Mar at age 54. By the way, I’m wrong about height qualifying someone to be a jockey. It’s purely weight. Yes, Stevens is 5-foot-4. But most jockeys are short only because more height tends to confer more weight. Eating is more of a preoccupation to jockeys than it is to supermodels. Stevens weighed in at 120 lbs. this morning but is listed in the program as 116 lbs. “I thought I was lighter than that,” he says. “My whole day just changed in three seconds.” Because horse racing is a game of inches, 2-3 lbs. can often distinguish winning from losing. So Stevens must now try to lose as much weight as possible before his two races this afternoon. (Between the Equicizer, galloping his horses and the steam room, that’ll be an amazing 2 lbs. He’ll ride both Little Bit Lovely

An announcement will state that the horses are carrying two more pounds than listed.) “Weight is a constant awareness,” Stevens says. “When I’m on vacation, I won’t even step on a scale because it makes me anxious.” Horse racing is a family business to Stevens, who entered when he was 14 years old in Idaho. His dad, Ron, was a horse trainer and his mom, Barbara, a rodeo queen. His older brother Scott, 57, still races. “What motivates me now is the same thing that motivated me then—winning,” Stevens says. “I’m not thinking about anything else. And that’s the kind of person you need to be to make it in this business.” According to Stevens, only 5 percent of licensed U.S. jockeys earn more than $50,000 a year. Even those lucky enough to have won multiple multi-million-dollar purses, like Stevens, have costs that most fans don’t think about. “Depending on what state you’re in, 60 percent goes to the owner, and you get 10 percent of that,” Stevens says. “Out of your 10 percent, you pay your agent 25 percent and your valet 2.5 percent, and stake the workers in the barn, the exercise rider and the assistant trainer. So you’ve got to be in it for more than money.” It’s not possible to overstate the danger of riding horses for a living, either. Between 1940 and 2012, 152 jockeys died on the job. Stevens, nicknamed “Bionic Man” because of all his replacement body parts, was nearly one of them. Several times.


When asked to describe his worst injury, Stevens instead shows me on his smartphone – someone uploaded it to YouTube. Titled “2003 Arlington Million (fall),” the clip shows Stevens tumbling off a spooked stallion named Storming Home and getting kicked in the head and back numerous gruesome times. “That’s from the nerves from my broken neck,” he says, explaining why his fingers wiggle randomly as he lay motionless on the track. Stevens then turns to me with a stare that burns into the back of my eyeballs and asks: “So, you think you’ve got what it takes?” Stevens walks me to the stable where the horse I will learn to ride, named Tiger, awaits my freshly acquired jockeying skills. Many of Stevens’ jockey friends try hiding their laughter as they spot me waddling by in my Abbondanza Racing silks, before realizing I’m in on the joke. “He’s looking for an agent, if anyone’s interested!” Stevens announces. “Hey, it’s the next Chuck Lopez!” someone yells back. Tiger’s trainer, Manny, waves us over to the stable. It’s time for my moment in the saddle. I’d like to say I thundered Tiger down the dirt before the track opened to the public. I’d like to say it felt like fate to fit my feet in the stirrups, grasp the coarse reins in my hands and assume the jockey stance in a moment that forever changed my life.

But I can’t say any of that. Tiger is a 10-year old lead pony who no longer races. (Lead ponies walk the procession of racehorses to the starting gate for each race.) The only dirt we ride on is beside his stables on the track’s backside. And Tiger is being walked around by a very nervous Manny, not thundering in my hands. That’s all the jockeying Tiger’s owner would allow me to experience, citing such trivialities as “liability,” “regulations” and “sanity.” “Have you even ridden a horse before?” Stevens asks. Actually, back at Camp Merrick Woods in Long Island, they had a stallion that walked in circles around a corral and let you feed him carrots. I’m pretty sure his name was Mr. Ted. And, let me tell you, I handled Mr. Ted better than any other camper could. “My apologies,” Stevens says sarcastically. “You totally got this.” Eventually, my whining breaks Manny down. Against his better judgement, he relinquishes control and Tiger is all mine. He’s only walking, but I drop into jockey stance anyway—at least until Manny asks me to please sit up straight. Then I give Tiger the gentlest of kicks and he lurches forward. For three seconds until he slows back down, I see my dead grandmother at the end of a long tunnel of light. And that three seconds, Stevens tells me, is precisely what being a jockey feels like. What’s the difference between Gary Stevens’ jockey career and mine? I’m retired for good. Evening of Illusions

The Old Globe celebrated in style with an Evening of Illusions at the 2017 Globe Gala, on the evening of September 23rd in support of the theatre’s artistic and arts engagement programs. The glamorous annual event featured an exclusive, one-night-only cabaret performance by Jane Krakowski, the Tony Award-winning star of the Broadway musicals She Loves Me and Nine and the hit television series 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Ally McBeal, with musical director Michael “Koz” Kosarin and her four-piece band. Reception and dinner was catered by the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina, and dancing to the music of the Cowling Band on Copley Plaza until 12:00 midnight. They had over 400 attendees and over $500,000 was raised.

The New Female Oasis New Female Spaces Designed to Emulate Popular Man Caves By Lexy Perez

J

ulia Roberts may have traveled the world to ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ and acquire the zen she needed in her life, but the time has come where the oasis a woman yearns for resides right in her backyard. Men have their caves and now women have their sheds. An alternate form of the male counterpart, ‘She Sheds’ are rooms or spaces designed specifically to be a woman’s fantasy world. Blueprinted as miniature living rooms, women are able to do as they wish in their own open space, without interruption. The idea resembles an adult playhouse, only rather than being a clubhouse, the space is considered a mini-getaway with a ‘no boys allowed’ sign hanging outside. While they can vary, the purpose of a she shed is entirely up to the woman. From reading to napping to an extra work office space, women use the shed as a free space to do what they wish. Although sheds can be constructed in the backyard, most she sheds are created from extra garage space or outdoor sheds preexisting on the property. The concept of a she shed mostly relies on the decorations. The designs may vary according to a woman’s preference and taste, but the interiors follow the same pattern. Popular necessities for a she shed include: sofas, pillows, bookshelves, office desks, florals, photographs and bohemian lights.

It is also common to coat the floors with layered rugs and fill open spaces with vintage antiques. The most crucial aspect of a she shed is that it’s a space where a fantasy world can become a reality. The female space can emulate a cottage in the woods, beach house, garden greenhouse, library, craft room, art studio, coffee shop, etc. She sheds are commonly painted bright colors in order to be distinguished from the property. Common colors include: pastel blue, yellow, mint, green, red or modern white. The intention is for the shed to not be an extension of the home, but rather of the woman herself. Women use she sheds to feel relaxed and pampered, without having to put a dent

in their wallets or book a plane ticket. It’s a space where women actually enjoy dedicating their time so it’s important to decorate accordingly. She sheds may be a free space but they can also be renovated for holidays. Transform the open space into a mini haunted house for Halloween to add an extra scare factor for trick-or-treaters. During winter, the shed can be revamped into a real-life gingerbread house filled with bright lights, fake snow, decorative trees and the smell of freshly baked goods. Barbie may have sung, “Imagination, life is your creation,” but she sheds are giving Barbie a run for her money for the ultimate dream house.
