I DREAM OF GHINI LAMBORGHINI HURACAN, SUPER CAR OF THE FUTURE

BY KEITH TURNER

he wide–eyed look on the young teen’s face was mirrored by his father, 50 years his elder, as they stepped gingerly into the Beverly Hills showroom of one the world’s most iconic and revered brands of automobiles. Their beaming smiles and soft whispers were like those of patrons in a fine art museum as they floated through the gallery, being careful not to touch, yet soaking up every sight and smell of the masterpieces that lay out before them. This is automobile royalty—this is Lamborghini. CONTINUED ON PAGE 32

ould you like to sit in it?” asked the young brand manager of O’Gara Coach Company’s Lamborghini Beverly Hills. The boy’s eyes grew even larger and his smile opened to reveal a grill full of shiny metal orthodontia. “Can I?” he muttered, still uncertain that he had heard the question correctly. “Of course!” she said. “Hop in.” Now, let’s be clear; one does not simply “hop in” a Lamborghini, especially the new Huracan model— Spanish for hurricane, the name of a particularly ferocious Spanish bull—with its super low–to–the– road stance and chiseled racing seats positioned just inches away from a monster engine. But there is nothing normal about this machine. In fact, to call it a car, or even a super car, doesn’t do it justice. This is a dream—this is Lamborghini. For more than five decades, the Italian automaker has produced

designs that were way ahead of their time, representing the future of automotive travel and immediately becoming classics as soon as they left the artist’s sketch pad. Even the Countach model, circa 1982, that shares the showroom with the Huracan and the Aventador, is as much an eye– catcher today as its younger siblings. But it’s the Huracan LP610–4 that draws our attention in 2015. With 610 horsepower packaged in a sexy spaceship–like body, sporting cat’s eyes, sharp distinct edges and a crab–like grill that appears to be gobbling up the road in front of it, the Huracan has the look of incredible motion while standing still. There is nothing subtle about the Huracan. As we lower into the driver’s seat, we are immediately aware of the fact that, as with most racing machines, the Huracan sits very low to the road—just a few inches above the blacktop. The cockpit looks like that of a private jet or rocket ship,

“THERE IS NOTHING SUBTLE ABOUT THE HURACAN.” The Huracan’s low–profile and cat– like eyes skim through city streets with streamlined power; ABOVE: Descending into the Huracan driver’s seat is an experience in itself.

with modified hexagons everywhere, and metal switch barriers protecting the controls. The digital center dash is topped by Darth Vader–like hood and the power–up button is protected by a bright red flip–up cover to reinforce the idea that you are just moments away from launch. This is luxury—this is Lamborghini. One push of the button and the Huracan roars to life with the throaty growl that is unmistakably Lamborghini. Another button raises the nose to keep it from scraping pavement as we ease out onto the city streets in “Strada” drive mode, which is the most that you dare to bring into the quiet neighborhoods of Beverly Hills. The “Sport” and “Corsa” modes are meant for more spirited drives. Racing style paddle shifters have replaced a foot clutch, and assist with the seamless performance of the Huracan’s transitional gears as we roar through the narrow neighborhood streets. he three driving modes are what sets this Lamborghini apart from other super cars. Even with its incredible horsepower, the Huracan is truly capable of handling neighborhood and city streets with ease. “Cars like the Huracan give us an opportunity for people to have a car that can be utilized as an everyday super car,” said Jason Chinook, General Manager of Marketing at Lamborghini America. “A lot of people think that super cars are exclusively for special occasions, and they can be, but the Huracan was developed to be able to take it to work every day if you wanted to. It’s built with that concept in mind. The driving modes give you the opportunity to be able to change the personality of the car from being that daily driver in ‘Strada’ mode, all the way to something that will dominate the track. The fact that you can have the best of both worlds from the flick of a switch on the steering wheel is incredible. It is a significant difference.” Another drivability factor is that the Huracan is

an all–wheel–drive super car that continuously works to keep the super car headed in the direction that you want it to go, even when the driver gets a bit carried away with the crazy power of the engine. This is performance—this is Lamborghini. The Huracan’s arrival on city streets draws attention from passersby, eliciting smiles from all who see it. Cameras pop out and the questions start to flow. “What is that?” “How fast does it go?” “How much does it cost?” and, inevitably, “What do you do for a living?” Lamborghini owners are used to this attention because there is no place that this car can go that won’t attract a crowd. “It’s really incredible,” said Chinook of his experience driving the Huracan. “I want people to feel like it’s something approachable and accessible because it brings joy to people’s lives. As simple as it may sound, a car can either be four wheels and an engine that gets you from Point A to Point B, or it can be something that really is a special occasion.” He said that Lamborghini owners tend to be a special breed of self–made entrepreneurs who can relate to the independent spirit of the company.“They feel that this is the car that allows them be able to communicate their individuality,” Chinook said. “We also find people who are achievers that have worked hard throughout their lives and are using this as an opportunity to reward themselves. It’s a token of their achievement.” Personalization is also a trademark of Lamborghini. Every car is built to the client’s specifications—with custom colors and interiors, if desired—and the dealer utilizes a special digital configurator to provide a virtual

look at the car inside and out before it goes into production. “We have a special program called ‘Ad Personam’ that provides an opportunity for people to personalize their cars,” said Chinook. “Let’s say they have a favorite exterior color, something that is very important to them. They can bring a swatch of the color and the dealer sends it to the factory which then works on building a special configuration just for them based on the colors that they choose. Options are endless. It’s quite incredible.” Then, in 6 to 12 months, your one–of–a– kind super car vehicle transitions from your dreams to your driveway. You can expect to spend upward of $500,000 to build your Huracan, but you can rest assured in knowing that you are not only getting an iconic super car with extreme power and amazing drivability, you are getting a unique artistic masterpiece, as well. This is living—this is Lamborghini. For a closer look, visit the newly opened O’Gara Coach Company Lamborghini dealership in La Jolla (888-867-6599) or visit ogaracoachlajolla.com.

“THE HURACAN WAS DEVELOPED TO BE ABLE TO TAKE IT TO WORK EVERY DAY IF YOU WANTED TO.”

Lamborghini offers complete personalization– from color to stitching– making this a truly individual and artistic vehicle; ABOVE: A mere flick of a switch takes the Huracan from Strada, to Sport, to Corsa modes.

lazing summer sun and grass stains. Sweaty uniforms and locked helmets. Gritted teeth and tenacious fortitude. For much of San Diego’s youth, Pop Warner is symbolic of childhood, where kids form iconic memories that will help define them as adults. And for those lucky enough to play under Coach Andy Vanderwiel, they’re not just shaping memories, they’re shaping their very futures. Vanderwiel, Vice President and Corporate Account Director at local Waxie Sanitary Supply, began coaching Pop Warner football seventeen years ago, but his history with the sport goes back even further. After his father took him to try–outs as a high schooler, Vanderwiel fell in love with the sport, the adrenaline of play and the rush of victory. He went on to play for prestigious teams through high school and junior college, but he missed the sport long after he finished school. “I’d always wished I could continue playing,” Vanderwiel attests. “I loved being on the field, the physicality of being drained after the game.” Vanderwiel got an opportunity to return to the field when his eldest son, Blake, began playing Pop Warner football seventeen years ago. Through coaching, Vanderwiel fell in love with the game all over again. Vanderwiel watched as his players grew, their persistence and determination on the field building and their devotion to the team, all of which shaped not only themselves, but even their coach, into stronger individuals. “Something about the kids and their innocence was so refreshing; to go out there everyday, they were out there to do the best that they could,” Vanderwiel reflects. Vanderwiel quickly realized that he didn’t just enjoy coaching, he was good at it, too. As his son Blake grew through Pop Warner, Vanderwiel led the team to several championships. When his son left to play for high school, Vanderwiel feared his coaching days were over; he attended that year’s coaches’ meeting with hopes of scoring a position as a flag coach, and was surprised to find that he was being asked to coach the junior midget team for Torrey Pines Pop Warner. Since that

day, Vanderwiel has been thoroughly involved in local Pop Warner, with positions ranging from coach to president, vice president, field coordinator, fundraiser, and an active member of the board. Vanderwiel also helped spearhead a movement to build the football–only locker room at Torrey Pines High School, ensuring that those kids he helped coach can become top–notch athletes through high school. With his youngest son, Morris, gearing up for high school, it looks like Vanderwiel’s days of coaching Pop Warner are coming to an end. But he has plenty of incredible memories to last him for years to come, like when son Blake scored a touchdown in the 4th quarter of a championship game, making the score 6-6; the team kicked and got 2 extra points to win the championship. Or when his expansion team barely made it into the playoffs but went on to win the first game when an injured player ran a reverse play and literally limped into the end zone (Vanderwiel still has a photo of his victory–cartwheel after that game). But it isn’t just Vanderwiel who has memories of these years to treasure; countless players reflect back on their time with Vanderwiel with gratitude and happiness. Vanderwiel notes that frequently he’ll have tall, burly men run up to him and embrace him with calls of “Coach Vanderwiel!” Growing up in an unquestionably fortunate part of San Diego, Vanderwiel isn’t the father of rags–to–riches stories like The Blind Side, but the work he does with these kids is still important. As Vanderwiel says: “Especially in our area, our kids are very fortunate. What football does for those kids—it’s a struggle, it’s not easy. It teaches them. It’s a lot of sweat, tears, pain and struggle; it’s a violent sport. We’re teaching these kids to be aggressive and work hard. It’s something that will give them that discipline that they’ll have the rest of their lives.” Vanderwiel is that token San Diegan, the man who stands for family and community and embodies small–town charm in a big city way. Families in Torrey Pines may mourn the loss of Vanderwiel as a coach, but don’t worry: we hear he has big plans to continue helping the community both with and without his favorite sport.

“IT’S SOMETHING THAT WILL GIVE THEM THAT DISCIPLINE THAT THEY’LL HAVE THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.” 36

ife is hectic. In between jobs, friendships, to–do lists, household upkeep, children and feeding ourselves (and the children), we lose a bit of sanity as we attempt to manage more than we are physically able to, day in and day out. As adults with busy schedules, it’s easy to fill our proverbial plate with a few too many responsibilities. But while doing too much may be inherent, it certainly isn’t healthy; according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, recent studies show that the long–term effects of stress can be as serious as heart disease, asthma, diabetes and obesity. The good news is there are easy ways to relieve the everyday stresses of a modern lifestyle; the solution to a chaotic lifestyle is as easy—or as difficult—as relinquishing control. Once you reassign one task—say, cooking dinner, or lining up a babysitter—you can easily prioritize those other tasks and start eliminating stress. Jamie Danielle, CEO and founder of J Danielle & Company Domestic Staffing, has perfected the answer to your stress–relieving prayers. Danielle and her team can provide you with the experienced professionals needed to properly execute any of those pesky, time– consuming tasks that tend to drain your time at home. With eight different types of domestic staffing options offered through their services, including executive housekeepers, nannies (or mannies), chefs, personal assistants, estate managers, butlers, domestic couples, and drivers, the solution to every one of your domestic problems is easy. Finding the best caliber of domestic employees is no easy task, as Nicholas Ash, a third–generation Edwardian butler affiliated with J Danielle & Co, attests: “It’s like a desert,” says Ash, “the people who actually have the skills, and experience, almost are impossible to find.” Danielle tirelessly sifts through crowds of average domestic staffers in search of those who have the necessary skills to operate at an elite level; these aren’t your average employees, but well–trained and highly– experienced experts. With an affluent customer base who are used to receiving the best in service, Danielle’s staffing decisions are definitive of the success of her business. her chefs cook up in the kitchen; multiple screening processes are followed by several interviews before a candidate is even considered for hire. And the most important qualification: experience. “Most candidates will have at least three to five years of previous full–time experience working in their respective fields,” Danielle says. And it’s not just a matter of having some kind of prior experience, but a maturity in that specific field. “Often times, for example, a chef who has worked in a commercial kitchen would not be suited to work in a private home, because the environment and circumstances are very different. We optimally hire candidates who’ve had prior estate experience.” It’s also important that Jamie Danielle, these employees have the appropriate CEO and demeanor; there is a fine line between founder of J Danielle helping and intruding, and J Danielle & Company Domestic & Co. is responsible for finding Staffing, is staffers who understand the delicacy an expert in transforming of the private home environment. your “to–dos” The story of Danielle is a romantic into “done.” one, full of unrelenting ambition and steadfast dream–chasing that allowed her to become the successful entrepreneur she is today. Growing up in Portland, Oregon, Danielle’s first love was with the arts. After studying theatre at the University of Colorado, she ventured to Hollywood to try her hand at acting. To earn her keep, she worked full time at the Beverly Hills Hotel as a hostess; it was at that time that Danielle found her passion. “While working at the hotel as a hostess, I found an interest in the amazing dishes that were being prepared,” Danielle says of her eye–opening moment. After a year in L.A., she knew she needed a break and tried a vacation in San Diego, where she decided to stay and began to focus wholly on her cooking skills and technique. After landing a co–hosting job on renowned local celebrity chef Larry Banares’ weekly Internet radio cooking show, Danielle finally felt like she had the experience to pursue a career in the kitchen. Soon after, she was hired as a full–time private chef for a prominent family in Rancho Santa Fe, where she was eventually inspired to start J Danielle & Co. Today, J Danielle & Co. is renowned as one of the finest domestic staffing companies in the region. Although her path was long, varied and, yes, stressful, there is no doubt that Danielle has found her calling. Through the amazing team at J Danielle & Co., that stressful to–do list you’ve been worrying about can easily transition from “to–do” to “done.”

take place over 3–4 days. Long Beach resident Melinda Lankford has participated in several of Hume Lake’s family camps. Lankford cherishes the serenity she and her family experience in the beautiful mountains. “My favorite part of the camp is the beauty of the surrounding mountains and the ability to ‘unplug’ our electronics. The speakers and various activities are also high quality, yet personable. It is a definite ‘connection’ point for my family. I love to walk around the lake or sit in one of the adirondack chairs and stare at the lake and the mountains. When I think about being at peace with God and with those I love the most, Hume Lake is part of that picture.” Hume Lake also offers a summer camp in San Diego for students in grades 6–12, on the campus of Point Loma Nazarene University. The youth benefit from group prayers and melodic sounds provided by camp musicians. The various recreational activities encourage team–building and give participants an opportunity to practice leadership skills. For San Diego resident Deron Higgins, Hume Lake programs strengthen his marital bond with his wife and his love for God. Furthermore, Higgins thrives on developing friendships with other like-minded families during the retreats. “From the family and couple’s retreats to the youth camps, they are all awesome. The direct impact is clearly a deeper connection with God, who He is and who we are. Perhaps what stands out the most are the relationships formed and of course the lake itself. Biking, running, walking around the campus, boating, paddle boarding and sailing on the lake—not a bad backdrop.” Hume Lake retreats help families return home physically and mentally recharged with greater spiritual sustenance. For many participants, the family camps have created life–long memories while helping them to connect with God and with one another in a natural setting. When it comes time to plan your family’s vacation this year, cancel those annual plans for the beach house and head North. Hume Lake is waiting to take you home.

WHO DO YOU TRUST?

THE IMPORTANCE OF A SECOND OPINION PLAN REVIEW

ou stroll out to the mailbox to grab your mail and find that you received a free dinner invitation for a retirement planning seminar. That was so thoughtful; should you go? Maybe. Will you be sold something? Probably. It is usually good to hear what professionals have to say and it’s nice to keep a pulse on such an important topic but before you RSVP, understand who is inviting you and what they are selling:

Locally Sourced distilled for ultimate purity Solar Rain® Zero is an excellent choice for those seeking to naturally cleanse excess hard minerals and contaminants from the body. Vapor distilling yields the purest form of water available. Just like Mother Nature makes rain, straight from a cloud.

• Insurance Only Agents: Typically sell insurance–based products such as annuities, life insurance, long–term care, etc. They get paid by selling you an insurance product. Their pay can be a lump–sum payment or over a period of time. Pros: These products may be something you need as part of your comprehensive plan. Cons: It’s not the only thing you need. If you receive a recommendation for a large majority or 100% of your assets to go into a “safe” investment, be very skeptical. • Commission Advisors: Generally sell commission–based products, so ask them how they are payed. A shares and C shares are commission products and they earn a commission and trail revenue when you purchase those funds. • Fee Based/Fee Only: These planners typically earn a percentage based on the total assets managed. Since they earn their fee based on the assets they manage, they generally have a goal of helping you increase your assets. • Flat Fee & Hourly Consulting: These planners charge per hour or a flat fee amount. They take a second look at your retirement assets or provide a full comprehensive plan that you can follow as a guide to invest on your own. I recently had a conversation with a colleague who was having a hard time with trust. As a Baby Boomer, she feels that they lost money in the last down market and that she doesn’t have the time horizon to make it back. SAN DIEGO IS HOME TO THE FINEST INTERIOR DESIGNERS

W

BY LIAH MASTERSON

hen it comes to expressing yourself, there is no better platform than your own home. As you may have heard, home is where the heart is, but it’s also where first impressions are made. Embodying the overall aesthetic appeal of your home is one major element: design. With the power of interior design, one can achieve the specific look and style you desire, as well as give guests the perfect first impression of who you are. Large or small, a home is your central hub and expressing yourself in your interior design is what distinguishes a house from a home. Most individuals can learn a lot about a person by visiting their home, which is all the more reason to invest in the look and feel of your sanctuary. Although many may assume this process is easy,

StemCell.life, Seth Cami, M.D. at Regenerative Medical Group in La Jolla is part of an innovative group of clinicians dedicated to turning your body into it’s very own “fountain of youth.” Costs are often covered by PPO and Medicare insurance. “We are able to assist patients with varying stages of illnesses, to those who are healthy and seeking preventative treatment,” said Dr. Camhi. RMG assists patients by use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), stem cell injections and IV therapy. Assist with stroke, arthritis, Parkinson’s, COPD, macular degeneration, dementia, depression, diabetes, fibromyalgia, headaches, sciatica and nerve pain just to name a few. Sports injuries; tendonitis, muscle pain and sports sprains, strains and injuries also have amazing results. Rare disorders such as muscular dystrophy neurofibromatosis and autism also see positive results. How is this possible? The human body has an inherent ability to heal tissue. New cells replace old or damaged tissue. PRP accelerates this healing

process and begins a powerful regenerative process. Your body releases growth factors and this increases blood flow to the injured area. PRP assists with Hair Restoration for general hair loss, Alopecia and post chemotherapy. Face Rejuvenation for skin tightening, lifting, wrinkles, scars. wound healing, stretch marks and discoloration. “Our IV Therapy provides energizing nutrients in a bag which is excellent for those who are gearing up for an event such as a 5K run or a hectic and busy lifestyle,” said Dr. Camhi. IV therapy replenishes and restores depleted nutrients, vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Excellent for skin care, kidney stones, antioxidant, pregnancy, heavy metal detox, antinflammatory and fatty liver issues. Stem cell therapy is another specialty of RMG. They offer 5 types of stem cells – so that they are not limited in creating the best solution for you. Some stem cells are best for muscles, others for brain cells, others are better for internal organs. They have the ability to determine and use the best stem cell solution for you. “We also offer immunotherapy to assist patients with moderate to severe COPD / Asthma or Lung cancer. No matter what your needs are, please call us for an appointment to create your individualized treatment plan. We are here to help.” said Dr. Camhi.

FAIRBANKS INTERIORS Owner & Designer: Sue Kelly 115 N Hwy 101, Solana Beach, CA 92075 (858) 523-2140 www.fairbanksinteriors.com Fans of designer Sue Kelly of Fairbanks Interiors often describe her primary design masterpieces as tasteful, timeless, warm and livable. But her personal favorite adjective to describe her work: eclectic. According to Sue, this particular style is one of the most interesting and harder looks to achieve, but it’s worth the extra effort, lending a more individualistic feel to her client’s homes. Although furnishings and accessories are some of the most important elements in her design scheme, Sue emphasizes that the overall backbone of her design really has to do with the home itself. Once you consider the overall look that embodies the home, then the rest of the design will feel more in sync and achieve the design flow her clients want. By allowing her style to encompass her client’s home as a whole, she works with her client’s to ensure that her designs also work with their furnishings and home accessories. In keeping in mind the lifestyle of her clients, she is able to create a design style that blends appropriate colors, textures, shapes, and finishes to result in an overall sophisticated and timeless home.

METROPOLITAN MUTTS

HOW TO NAVIGATE DOG–FRIENDLY SAN DIEGO

or those of us who love dogs, there is nothing like having our fur–babies by our side. They are our children, our support, our companions, our best friends and the ones who give us a level of unconditional love that just can’t be found with two– legged folks. The size of our pet pals affects the public places that let us in, but shouldn’t necessarily determine the pup who will be the best fit for our urban homes. A relaxed Great Dane is much more suitable for a small indoor space than a hyper Jack Russell who needs room to play. It’s important to research other breeds and call professionals at places like Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe to find out if a good fit is available for adoption. City living comes with resources for our dogs that may have never even crossed our minds. In addition to mobile groomers, there are also urban–based pup–professionals who provide services such as training, walking and boarding. DogZenergy in La Jolla in an example of a resource to help with your canine’s needs, as well as providing socialization and fun adventures for our dogs. Their new app allows owners to book services, be notified when our dog walkers arrive, chat, receive pictures and even track our four–legged friends on their walks. Our pups never have to be alone too long and we don’t have to go without being involved with those furry little faces that fill our hearts. With such beautiful weather, we have plenty of places outside to share with our barking buddies. Outdoor malls such as Westfield UTC allow dogs in stores if they are on– leash and even have their own Bark Park down the hill from the health–conscious and locally–sourced Tender Greens restaurant. Horton Shopping Plaza downtown is another example of an urban location you can shop with your dog,

but there are plenty more. Culture and entertainment lends itself to our pups in different ways as well. Balboa Park offers three dog parks in addition to allowing our dogs to saunter with their owners through the center’s beautiful cobbled streets. While dogs may not be allowed in museums, they can join in on such lovely activities as a picnic or concert at the Organ Pavilion during the outdoor summer series. Also in downtown San Diego, Seaport Village offers dog–friendly entertainment with plenty of shops, street entertainers and restaurants with outdoor dining areas. Dining out with the dog will not be much of a problem if you’re up for eating al fresco. Mille Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe, Trattora Fantastica in Little Italy and The Edgewater in Downtown San Diego are just a few examples of patios where pooches can join for dinner. It may be more difficult to find places where they are allowed to accompany inside, but with our beautiful weather, why is indoors even an option? Looking to extend your pup–adventures into a full–blown staycation? The W Hotel downtown offers furry guests their very own beds, treats and “pet–in–room” door signs. This hotel and others alike often offer pet–walkers and sitters and can recommend different sites and attractions to take our dogs. Urban living comes with challenges for families that include these tail–wagging additions, but nothing that a little commitment and research can’t solve. If you’re not willing to put up with a wee bit of work, sacrifice and spending a few bucks, it just may not be the right time to adopt a pooch. But if you’re ready, you’ll be rewarded with a full heart, laughter and a constant companion that will help complete your perfect city life. Dedicated to Layla, who grew up on the beaches of San Diego county. She even surfed! She was full of energy and life, just like me and always with me for our adventures.

ALL HAIL HERA HUB!

SPA–INSPIRED WORKSPACE SPELLS SUCCESS FOR FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS

A

s soon as you set foot into a Hera Hub location, you know that you are not in a typical office environment. Gone are the walls and cubicles, the ringing phones and the stiff, uncomfortable plastic chairs. Instead, you are greeted by the scent of fresh flowers, the sounds of running water and soft music, and a variety of stylish furniture that makes you feel like you are in a five–star hotel rather than a co–working office space. And you see lots of smiling, welcoming faces of people—mostly women—who are managing their respective business endeavors in an airy, open environment that has the relaxing smell, luxurious feel and fashionabale look of an elegant spa. This is the creative work space for entrepreneurial women who are either self–employed or working remotely for an already established business but need a more positive social atmosphere than a desk in a spare bedroom at home can provide. This is Hera Hub, the spa–inspired co–working environment that launched in San Diego in late 2011. Hera Hub currently has three locations in the area—Sorrento Valley, Mission Valley and Carlsbad—as well as one in Washington, D.C. and is poised to explode with franchises nationwide. Felena Hanson is the founder of Hera Hub, which is named after Hera, the Greek goddess and protector of women. Having worked alone to build her own marketing firm, Hansen found it difficult to grow her business in the solitude that working from home provided. “It’s challenging working alone because you work in a vacuum,” she recalls, “so I started looking at space for myself and my business and found that a lot of the women I knew were running into the same challenges.” The traditional executive suite businesses didn’t fit because they sell a model of privacy, which she didn’t want. “I didn’t need more privacy, I had plenty of privacy on my own at home.” Co–working spaces were mostly focused on technology businesses that were very male–oriented and provided the bare minimum of work space environments, such as plywood and cinder block tables, loud music and beer pong games—clearly not the style she was looking for. In fact, no shared workspaces that she visited fit her needs, so Hanson decided to create her own. “I decided to create a model that didn’t exist because I knew there was a need in the market,” she said. “It’s just a different environment with a vibe that is focused on creating a safe, supportive setting where hard questions can be asked and we can all learn from each other.” “Too many people try to create a business in a vacuum, but it’s important to surround yourself with like–minded individuals in a community that is supportive. We need to see people who are a few

64

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

steps ahead of us and be able to sit down with them and ask ‘How did you do that?’” So Hanson created Hera Hub as a spa–inspired platform for members to come to focus on their businesses in a calm and relaxing environment with service reminiscent of what you might find at Nordstrom or other high–end boutiques. Members pay a monthly fee based on their desired use of the Hera Hub facilities, with full–time users paying more than $300 per month and others averaging $150–250 per month. After creating and perfecting her business platform in San Diego, Hanson was ready to recreate Hera Hub in other cities she where she saw a need, so she decided to franchise the business, with Washington D.C. being the first to open outside of San Diego. “I figured that because Hera Hub is a platform for entrepreneurs, then why not take everything that I’ve learned over the last four years and turn that into an opportunity for somebody else to launch their own business by using our brand and our system as a model?” said Hanson. “We worked very hard to get going and made a ton of mistakes so they (franchisees) don’t have to suffer through all those things.” After the opening of the Washington, D.C. location in June, Hanson is in talks with potential Hera Hub owners in about a dozen other cities across the nation. Her goal: To have 20,000 members worldwide by 2020. Hanson is discussing potential franchisees in Phoenix, Las Vegas, St. Louis, Raleigh/Durham and London. Expansion to Canada, South America and Western Europe could be coming as well. Nicole MacDonald, owner and founder of Sash Bag, is one of the many entrepreneurial women who credit Hera Hub with her success. “I was working from home, trying to grow my business, with my kids around, which was a bad decision because I was unable to focus and grow my business,” said MacDonald. “Then when Hera Hub opened up I was able to find my space and was able to grow my marketing business. And through that business I was able to grow to a point where I had the resources to fulfill my ultimate dream which is the Sash Bag. I can’t even stress how much I think Hera Hub is such a huge component to the success that I have had with this business. I met my business partner, my investor, all my board members, I’ve gone through the HeraLab incubator, I put my business plan together, and everything has been done here. It’s amazing.” Amanda Hirko, owner of Hirko Consulting, agrees. “I looked into it based on using the conference room and a space to meet students and just found that it was so much more than that,” she said. “This is not just a shared workspace, it’s a place of true inspiration. I was working from home for eight years and I don’t think I moved very far. I now feel like I’m part of something and I missed that.” After opening four locations in four years, and many more on the way, it’s clear that Felena Hanson is living her dream and staying true to her business mantra: Go Big or Go Home.

Hera Hub already offers a variety of locations, including Sorrento Valley, Mission Valley, Carlsbad, and Washington D.C., as well as specialized spaces for different professionals. Founder Felena Hanson (bottom left) has plans to expand her female–minded model worldwide.

GREAT MAPLE

hether it’s for a Sunday Funday shindig with friends or a meal with the family, brunch is a favorite outing for San Diegans every weekend. On the boardwalk, in the sunshine or in the heart of the Gaslamp, these are the best places for brunch in America’s finest city.

68

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

Great Maple started with the simple idea of infusing seasonal ingredients into their cocktails and menu items. They call it a European dinette, where brassiere meets diner. It’s the comfort food people crave with a culinary culture approach. When you think brunch, you think of maple syrup—Great Maple delivers. Their full–scale bakery team specializes in one–of–a–kind pies and their famous Maple Bacon Doughnuts. Other tasty treats includes personal apple pies with salted caramel and candied pecans and Brioche French toast logs with smoked–bacon maple syrup. And if you’re in a more savory mood, their Scramble Melts include free range eggs scrambled with your choice of fillings and topped with a melted–cheese crown and served with fresh fruit, grilled bread or Olive Oil & Fig Cake. Wash it all down with an Old School Mary, a traditional concoction of Reyka Icelandic Vodka, tomato juice, spices, fresh lemon, and finished with a salty rim and a crisp celery stalk. Known for: Maple Bacon Doughnuts. Florence Brunch, with creamy polenta, seasonal mushrooms, pecorino cheese and two poached eggs. For a kid and adult–friendly choice, try Pigs in a Blanket: a buttermilk pancake wrapped around pork sausage served with potatoes.

SNOOZE

Snooze specializes in creative twists on classic dishes with an energetic vibe. The food and beverage menus change seasonally, so you’ll always find a fresh and delicious plate to try. Snooze’s Mantra, “It only takes a moment to make a difference,” embodies their involvement in the local community. They strive to be good neighbors and positively influence each neighborhood they join and to care about the earth and challenge ourselves every day to create a better world by composting, recycling and responsibly sourcing. The Snooze in Hillcrest was recently awarded as one of the first Ocean Friendly Restaurants by The Surfrider Foundation. Known for: Pineapple Upside Down pancakes, the eatery’s signature dish. The pancake flight is a popular option that allows diners to try 3 different pancakes. The Benedict’s change constantly, offering creative twists on the classic ham Benedict. The Bella Benny is an Italian version with prosciutto, tallegio cheese, balsamic and arugula.

TOWER 23

JRDN at Tower 23 is a contemporary steak and seafood restaurant which features casually sophisticated California cuisine for lunch and dinner daily– but the real star is brunch. Right by the ocean, the atmosphere is fresh, cool, clean and upbeat. Their brunch features all the classic fixin’s, including eggs, steaks and potatoes. Take a couple trips to their custom build-your-ownmimosa bar while catching some California sun rays. Known for: Wild Mushroom and Potato Skillet, with poached eggs, arugala, lemon, fennel sausage and hollandaise. The JRDN Breakfast Sandwich is also a crowd–pleaser, with soft–scrambled eggs, white cheddar cheese, hash browns, bacon, ham and aioli on brioche.

BARRIO STAR

Barrio Star just celebrated their five year anniversary this past Cinco De Mayo and during that time they have become a true neighborhood gem. It’s hard to miss the bright orange

building located on the corner of 5th and Nutmeg. Since day one, Barrio Star has maintained a “mi casa es su casa” atmosphere; the restaurant is bright and lively, but with just the right touch of nostalgia to make you feel relaxed and right at home. This atmosphere suits the menu perfectly, which has been referred to as “Modern Mexican Soul Food.” Their menu items put a fresh, healthy flair on classic Mexican dishes. Everything is made from scratch using local and organic ingredients whenever possible. Known for: Cinnamon French Toast, a delicious combo of grilled homemade cinnamon bread served with a blueberry puree. Breakfast Tamales, featuring slightly sweet corn tamales and eggs with a tomatillo sauce, black beans, cheese and salsa cruda. Their Avocado Scramble, with eggs scrambled with avocado and cheese, served with tortillas and jalapeno–rosemary potatoes, as well as their Power Breakfast, scrambled egg whites served with organic steamed greens, power rice and cilantro lime sauce, are fresh, clean classics. Barrio Star’s Brunch Drink Menu also features some famous options, like the Barrio Bloody Maria and the Serrano Chili & Fresh Oregano Margarita.

WORLD FAMOUS

World Famous has been a local hot–spot oceanfront seafood and steak restaurant in Pacific Beach for years. Their brunch menu is full of a variety of delicious seafood and meat options, keeping guests returning for generations. Guests enjoy their meals and mimosas while watching the waves roll onto the sand and people pass by on the Pacific Beach boardwalk. Known for: The Main Lobster Benedict includes poached Maine Lobster tail with soft boiled eggs, fresh asparagus spears, chopped parsley and lemon, and hand–whipped hollandaise over grilled focaccia. Their Huevos Rancheros includes two eggs any style you like covered with a mild ranchero sauce, cheese and sliced avocado. And don’t miss their Prime Rib Hash, chopped prime rib sautéed with white rose potatoes, onions, mild red and green peppers and mushrooms served with horseradish cream served over scrambled eggs.

JUNIPER & IVY PERSEVERES IN SAN DIEGO’S CAPRICIOUS CANTEEN SCENE B Y E M I LY G L A S E R

ince the moment my Southern spurs set foot in the sandy dirt of San Diego, I have been an active participant in and palatably–pleased fan of our restaurant scene. Over the years, I’ve become accustomed to the endless ebb–and–flow of new restaurants that consistently flood our watery city: the hubbub that surrounds an opening, the clamor of recent diners to have their reviews noted, followed by the fade as the fad falls and a newer, hipper restaurant opens. But not every restaurant accedes to this cultural decline; a few capable canteens keep customers clambering, asking for more and murmuring their approvals for months, even years, after opening. One of those fortuitous restaurants: Juniper & Ivy. Nearly a year and a half after opening, Juniper & Ivy has proved that it has staying power in the fickle food scene of San Diego. Helmed by Chef Richard Blais, winner of Bravo’s “Top Chef AllStars,” the Little Italy eatery consistently serves up fresh takes

and contemporary twists on American classics. At the top of that list, and one of my personal favorites, deviled eggs; served in a delightfully unique shell of egg–white meringue, the creamy yolk mousse and mustard seed caviar blend seamlessly as the meringue melts in your mouth. It’s this distinctly different— almost idiosyncratic—flair that has kept Juniper & Ivy in the elite echelon of perpetually popular San Diego restaurants. CONTINUED ON PAGE 72

Juniper & Ivy’s signature dessert, the Yodel, includes devil’s cake, white chocolate, hazelnut brittle and hot chocolate.

When dining at Juniper & Ivy, I would make two suggestions: one, invest in a tapas–style approach, making a variety of selections from the ever–changing small plates menu, the restaurants’ strength; and two, bring your appetite. I sampled a little bit of everything, my palate constantly delighting in the explosions of countless flavors, sweet, savory and everything between. I relished the fresh Baja stone crab atop fluffy, freshly–made brioche, paired with a spinach and artichoke spread, kewpie mayo, baby tomatoes and pickled onions; every element of the dish was fresh and bursting with flavor. Following the citrusy summer dish, I tried the morel mushrooms with cheddar–potato agnolotti and Italian black truffles, an earthy compliment to the lighter flavors of before. But my true favorite took me by surprise; my server set a dish before me, a thick slab of treacle, ribboned with coffee and raspberry hues, to be spread on more of the crunchy brioche. When a bite first touched my tongue, I sank back into my chair and sighed, the soft, buttery texture delighting my sense of touch almost as much as my taste buds. And then, the reveal: it was not, in fact, a take on traditional gelatin, but a foie gras terrine with a glaze of strawberries and almonds. When you go to Juniper & Ivy, you

absolutely must try the foie gras terrine; these delicate flavors and surprising ingredients are definitive of the eatery. It’s not just the delectable dishes that make Juniper & Ivy a perennial favorite among San Diegans. The wood–decked facade blends seamlessly into the terrain, creating the illusion that the restaurant is a natural part of the scenery. Step inside and you feel at home; Juniper & Ivy is by no means a small or intimate restaurant, but the cold, modern aspects are well–balanced with warm woods and traditional fabrics. And the service? Unmatched. My server was the perfect blend of approachable and knowledgeable, friendly and professional. Her knowledge regarding the entire menu, from foods to wines, was truly impressive. As I spooned heartily into my final dish (the Yodel, an incredible amalgamation of devil’s cake, white chocolate, hazelnut brittle and hot chocolate– a rich dessert my sweet tooth couldn’t deny, despite my burgeoning stomach), I glanced around the room in a glutted reverie. The massive space was full of San Diegans of all types, distinct in age and profession, style and build, but one thing they all had in common? The same delighted, full–bellied smile that was smeared across my face.

I dived in a little deeper to discover the root of Juniper & Ivy’s utopian atmosphere. When designers set forth to create the iconic eatery, they wanted to make sure the management team had constant, unmetered control of the space to ensure every customer was happy at all times. And how do you create a utopian atmosphere in a dystopian world? The ELAN g! Control System. The ELAN g! is a futuristic hub of regulation, allowing the Juniper & Ivy management team to monitor the climate, audio–video control, and security system directly from their mobile devices. And if management steps out, individualization and accommodation don’t leave with them; certain members of the staff can change the song playing on an individual speaker directly from their mobile phones, allowing them to cater to any guests’ request on the spot. Sound too good to be true? It’s not. And the best part is, ELAN g! Offers a variety of systems, so you can have that kind of innovative personalization in your own home. 72

The young performers of Opera NEO utilize the program to become experts in a nearly–lost art.

An Encore for Opera

SAN DIEGO’S OPERA NEO TRAINS THE NEXT GENERATION OF ARTISTS

O

BY ERICA MINER

pera NEO is a San Diego–based opera company and educational program for a new generation of young singers, to prepare and inspire them to grow and perform at the highest level. Participation in the program is based on a highly–selective national audition process. Those selected are voice majors in nationally recognized conservatories and college music programs, as well as post– graduate young professionals. The goal of Opera NEO is to unlock the full potential of the singers it trains while nurturing each individual’s artistic qualities and personality to help them develop into successful, independent artists. Peter Kozma, Director of Opera NEO, tells us about his company of young singers and his mission to bring the artistry of talented young opera singers to San Diego audiences. EM: Tell us a little about your background. PK: I was born in Budapest, Hungary, started taking music lessons at age six, in flute, voice and conducting, and graduated from Franz Liszt Academy of Music with a degree in Vocal Performance. Working with my extraordinary professors, mentors and classmates, I helped coordinate performances, develop the overall artistic vision and staging and got my feet wet in stage directing. After graduation I worked at Hungarian State Opera as resident assistant director and pursued a graduate degree in stage directing at the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Music. What gave you the idea to create Opera NEO? While at the Liszt Academy, we started the Ars Classica Opera Festival in Godollo, a small suburb of Budapest, creating opportunities for young opera singers, instrumental musicians,

78

conductors and designers to perform and experiment. After completing my degree in Austin, I worked at opera companies and young artist training programs in the US, including Wolf Trap, Minnesota Opera and Opera San Jose, then directed the opera program at Ohio State University in Columbus for four years. I was always passionate about young artist education and helping young singers. I still feel like one of them at heart. After moving to San Diego with my family, I ran out of excuses not to do what I always did: create something new, work with young singers and produce opera. In early 2012 I made some phone calls to friends and colleagues. Soon we were all in San Diego working together with 20 young singers. What is the main goal of Opera NEO? To do our part for the future of opera, training and featuring upcoming generations of opera singers, helping them develop into successful, independent artists with accessible, contemporary interpretations of classic works with cutting–edge staging that speaks to new audiences. We are passionate about opera as a modern art form. I love to hear from new patrons: “I didn’t know opera was so cool!” What are some highlights of your 2015 season? We are very excited to share with our audience the talents of a new group of young singers. We introduced them on Sunday, July 19th, with our annual Aria Marathon, a free event at the Palisades Presbyterian Church. Next comes Cabaret at the Encinitas Library, a fun-filled evening of opera, operetta and musical theater scenes accompanied by piano, wine and dessert, July 31st and August 1st. The festival culminates in a double bill of Mozart’s The Impresario and an abridged version of Bizet’s Carmen (August 7th–8th) and Handel’s Rinaldo (August 14th–15th), presented under the stars at the Palisades Amphitheater of the Palisades Presbyterian Church.

Barry Edelstein hosts “Thinking Shakespeare Live!”

Reaching Out to San Diego THE OLD GLOBE’S BARRY EDELSTEIN

N

BY ERICA MINER

ow that San Diego’s beloved Old Globe has announced its remarkable 2015–16 season, Artist Director Barry Edelstein can hardly contain his excitement. I caught up with him to discuss his passion and enthusiasm for this theatre and for his happily–adopted city.

EM: Congratulations on celebrating your 80th anniversary this year. What has been your personal journey to the Old Globe Theatre? BE: I’ve been in the theatre since I was a kid; I was inspired by teachers in public schools in New Jersey, back in a time before arts budgets were slashed from public education. I got my first paying job from the legendary Joseph Papp who founded the New York Shakespeare Festival. Soon I was directing Shakespeare at small theatres around the country, ran a small Off Broadway theatre in New York, and then the Globe. That makes it sound fast and easy and a straight line! It was none of those. But it’s certainly been fun. With the exciting new 2015–16 season coming up, what are the world premieres your audiences most look forward to? Are there any intriguing surprises in store? Our 15–16 season is really varied, really strong. The Globe has a big audience with a wide range of tastes, so we work hard to keep our offerings diverse. Everyone will find something they like and, if we’re doing our jobs right, something new they didn’t know they would

like. We’re premiering a new musical, RAIN, by one of our country’s great theater composers; a new play by an up–and–coming writer; and a dance–musical choreographed by a master. All thrilling stuff! You have possibly one of the best jobs in town. In addition to all the hats you wear producing 15+ shows each year, somehow you’ve found time to direct the world premiere of RAIN, your first musical. What are its unique challenges and rewards? Yes, it is a great job! I am nervous about my first musical, but in the best ways. Artists need to renew themselves by embracing the challenge of new forms. RAIN is unique in that it’s really more of a play in which people sing than a traditional, chorus–girls–and– dance–numbers musical, and its source is literary. In some ways it reminds me of a big classical play, and not such a huge a leap from where I’ve been. I’m excited to start work on it. Given the wide range of old and new shows to choose from in any given season, how do you create the right mix to keep loyal audiences happy, while reaching out to a broader, more diverse audience? We listen very carefully to our audience, which is not exactly shy about expressing its opinions. My sense is that what people want is work that’s excellent, regardless of form. Excellence in the arts is often a function of innovation. Each season needs to have material that’s new, that reaches out to more and more of our city, so that the company as a whole remains vital and relevant. The trick is to do

A MUSICAL COMEDY WITH A LOT ON ITS MIND that while at the same time honoring the history that’s made the Globe so successful in the first place. The Old Globe has been developing one of San Diego’s most extensive community outreach programs. How will its outreach expand this year? Globe for All, our free tour of professional Shakespeare, has succeeded beyond my wildest expectations. Last year we did it as a pilot program, really on a shoestring. This year we’re visiting a few more venues and building more support for it throughout the institution. We’re in the middle of a big reorganization of how the Globe conducts all of its community–based education and humanities work. I want the Globe to emerge as a national leader in this work. We’re on our way.

Some of the most popular events are your onstage conversations and your “Thinking Shakespeare Live!” Do you have any special events planned? I love doing that stuff, because part of making art is helping people understand it, giving audiences entry points. Whenever a prominent thinker comes to our institution, for example, I love to share them with our audience. We’re doing a play, CAMP DAVID, about the 1978 Middle East peace accords. Its playwright is brilliant Pulitzer–winner Lawrence Wright. We’re honored to bring him to San Diego, and we’ll do a public program with him. “Thinking Shakespeare” will have an encore on August 8th.

BOOK, MUSIC AND LYRICS BY

KRISTEN ANDERSON-LOPEZ

Who would be on your bucket list for a “Conversations With” evening? Oh, so many people! One of the things that drew me into the theatre is the number of incredibly interesting people in and near it—super smart, highly imaginative people. In that world are some real thinkers—people whose range is wide and who conceive of the arts not just on their own terms but as a civic force. It’s those theatre thinkers that I love the most. You’ve been here just over two years. Have you had time to enjoy San Diego outside your own theatre yet? The public nature of my job has brought me into contact with people and institutions all over the county and it’s been wonderful. Also, I have young children, and they keep me grounded in real life and in so many things beyond theatre. I know the whereabouts of every jungle gym in every neighborhood of the city, for example. And beaches, and hikes, and wonderful restaurants, and so many great arts institutions that program family–friendly activities. It’s a happy, livable city, and I’m so grateful to be part of it.

S

And Your Choices Are… BY BOB MOREY

ince this is our issue to showcase San Diego, I took an informal poll of what you all liked best over our last season around town in the performing arts. I was surprised when this led to a lot of discussions that covered some shows I didn’t think many of you made it to, as well as crowd–pleasers and award–winners. Without further adieu, here are your favorites from the last year around San Diego: While the Old Globe seldom misses a beat (and never sleeps) while staging upwards of 15 productions a year, Shakespeare’s Othello (while actually part of the 2013–14 season) was the stand– out of the season for our readers. Richard Thomas as Iago stole the show and had people talking for months about how far he’s come from John–Boy Walton. Other Globe productions that received the most hits were Two Gentleman From Verona, Music for Two, The White Snake, and The Twenty–Seventh Man. Down the street, the show that kept the Civic Center packed for four weeks, Wicked, was your choice for favorite touring show. This was not the first (nor do I suspect the last) time Wicked has blown through town, selling out so far in advance that getting tickets close to showtime was an act of luck. As far as the Symphony goes, your responses were so wide–ranging that picking just one night would be like drawing a name out of the hat. Stand–out nights included: the 2014 Opus Gala, An Evening with John Williams with Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart (who stepped in for an ailing John Williams at the last moment), and Holiday Pops: A Celtic Celebration BEST OF with Grammy Award–winner and nine–time All–Ireland Fiddle Champion Eileen Ivers. But the resounding opinion is that any night spent at the Symphony is never a bad choice.

82

This season’s favorite comedies included The Second City Nut– Cracking Holiday Review at the La Jolla Playhouse, which was a laugh a minute and a little different every night. And Dame Edna’s Farewell Tour at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido was half–scripted with lots of improv that kept the audience in stitches. In our poll, you chose White Christmas as your favorite musical this year. The San Diego Musical Theatre staged their final production at the North Park Theatre, their home of five years, before moving on to the Speckles Theatre to start the 2015 season. In Dance, San Diegans couldn’t get enough of The Nutcracker. The City Ballet of San Diego had capacity–crowds at Speckles throughout the month of December and then followed up with the The Balanchine Spectacular. The City Ballet of San Diego considers it an honor to be recognized by The George Balanchine Trust as having the technical skills and artistic quality to have presented three full–length masterworks choreographed by the 20th century genius, George Balanchine. And finally, The San Diego Opera. After 49 seasons, the former Board of Directors of The San Diego Opera tossed in the towel and wanted to close up shop, but a revolution took place behind the scenes and a reorganized San Diego Opera returned for a 50th season, stronger than ever. This past season counts in any scorebook as a win. Mozart’s epic Don Giovanni was breathtaking in every aspect and left the audience in awe and wanting more. And thanks to the new Board, supported by a dedicated staff and the newly appointed Executive Director David Bennett at the helm, we will get more! 2015 As the 2015–16 season continues to bring new and exciting shows to our stages, drop us a note and tell us about what you’re seeing that shouldn’t be missed, and we’ll do the same.
