BEAUTIFUL WORLDS COLLIDE

CAROL BADER’S DEL MAR HAT CO. MELDS HORSE RACING AND FASHION Couture fashion and fast-paced sports are two worlds that rarely collide - unless you happen to be attending the world famous Kentucky Derby, Ascot, Breeder’s Cup or any other major racing venue. Spring fashion and magnificent millinery reign supreme here, second only to the winner of the race. In fact, if it wasn’t a horse race, it could practically be a runway! Hats are the crowning point at our own Del Mar racetrack, especially with opening day coming up. It’s time to begin thinking about those race day fashions, especially from the head up! Headquartered here in Del Mar, just minutes from the home of the races, is the Del Mar Hat Company - a small boutique that houses the big business studio of internationally renowned designer Carol Bader. She specializes in the highfashion millinery that’s typically seen at all the right races venues and beyond. She truly creates art. “Everything is three-dimensional in my head,” Bader explains. “I don’t really sketch. I hand-sculpt each hat and the important details. Everyone who’s worked with me refers to it as my ‘magic hands’ because I can pick up material and sculpt the hat or headpiece together in my hands. I create the shaping and the movement with purpose, especially if it’s for a specific client. That’s not really something

that I draw, but intuitively feel. Bader’s free-form style of design leads to entirely individual creations. She not only shapes the material organically but also creates her own custom-blended dyes; Bader dyes her materials by hand, as well. Additionally, the fabric and embellishments are hand-stitched to each hat. Bader’s work is meticulously built from a vision in her head, but ultimately becomes a custom, unique piece for her clients. Bader is perhaps most proud of her distinctive dyes. “I’m a chemist with my colors,” she says. “The colors that I use are not in a bottle. I mix them all myself.” Much of her designs are custom pieces, which require specific colors to match other garments. She uses fabric swatches, product images or sometimes the physical dress itself to diligently blend and build a dye to match perfectly. Every piece she creates is entirely individual, and Bader assures that no two hats in her repertoire are the same. That’s why customers flock to the Del Mar Hat Company from around the world to see her designs, and it’s why her most prestigious clients return year after year. Bader’s studio stocks more than millinery. As a designer, Bader is always eager to keep busy with new patterns and products. She makes quite a few options for men, including

pocket squares and ties that feature fun, modern prints and incorporate equestrian themes. Bader says she sold out of every design this year during Derby, as did every shop that carried her custom pieces in Kentucky. In fact, Bader sells her pieces in select boutiques all over the country, including large retailers like Brooks Brothers and J. Peterman. From casual to couture, Bader pours herself into every project. “This is an art form,” Bader says. “I can’t cookie-cutter [designs] out. That’s the antithesis to art.” Bader’s unrivaled passion for her work and her unbridled, global success in the industry proves that her art and her vision have not gone unnoticed. More than two decades of expertise in design and millinery make her pieces highly sought after across the country and beyond. Bader is widely recognized in the equestrian community and is known to create custom pieces for many of racing’s royalty. Her dedication to excellence and artistry has frequently put her work in the Winner’s Circle at all of the nation’s most distinguished racing events, year after year. Custom designs for Opening Day Del Mar and Breeder’s Cup are available by appointment, booked well in advance. See Bader’s work come to life at Del Mar Hat Co. in the Del Mar Plaza.

LUXURY TRAVEL BY KEITH TURNER

EMBRAER DESIGNS NEW AIRCRAFT INTERIORS ENSURE THE JOURNEY IS AN ELEGANT ADVENTURE

Commercial airline travel can be a tiring cattle car endurance test these days; even executive jet travel can get stale, cramped and dull, especially on long flights. It’s time to take a step back into the glory days of air travel, where glitz and glamor made flying a special experience and passengers dressed up for the journey. Embraer, the world’s third largest airplane manufacturer producing commercial, private and military aircraft, has just released a pair of stunning interior concepts that are designed to turn long flights into an entertaining, party-in-the-sky experience for the privileged passengers who step aboard. Created for the ultra-efficient, 19-passenger Lineage 100E model, Embraer’s two new stylish, high-design jet concepts were developed with the idea of bringing the glamour, elegance and excitement of the Art Deco era back to air travel. The Manhattan and Hollywood airships offer a nod to the glamour of the early days of consumer flight, when elegantly attired travelers looked forward to the flight as part of their vacation experience, rather than as a mode of transport. The Manhattan Airship features the deep, rich woods found in high-end ocean liners of the Art Deco era, while the Hollywood Airship offers a bright, silver screen appeal inspired by classic black and white films. Both designs feature luxury elements that include high-end materials like simulated crystal lighting developed specifically for aircraft and mohair and lambskin leather seating. The jets also include spacious cabin zones, including the Cloud Club Bar with elegantly designed fold-down seating, the Crystal Room dining area and a salon designed for on-board socializing.

Jay Beever, Vice President of Interior Design at Embraer Executive Jets, tapped former Disney Imagineer and renowned designer Eddie Sotto to collaborate on the concepts. “The idea for the design came from a conversation with my friend John Erdmann, in Laguna Beach, as we were discussing the cruise ship the Normandy, of the late 1930s,” Beever recalls. “When you looked at the ship’s design there was epic in the sense of color, materials, shape and distance creating a ‘vanishing point.’ [It’s] a grand dining room that felt like you were starting down the tunnel of ancient Egypt with hieroglyphs on the walls leading into the dining room.” “We thought ‘What if we designed this elegant experience again, but inside our aircraft?’ The Lineage [captures] the designs of the Art Deco triangle of the U.S.—Manhattan, Hollywood and Miami,” he said. “Really capturing an optimistic era that has been forgotten and lost.” Beever then tapped former Disney Imagineer and renowned designer Eddie Sotto to collaborate on the concepts. “In the Manhattan design, the upper skyline loft apartment feel is that inspiration of the big window over the sofa, across from the sky lounge and the cloud bar,” he says. “It feels like you are not in an aircraft anymore, but you are heaven-bound.” (CONTINUED...)

One key feature of the designs is the fact that the galley and service areas of the aircraft are pushed to the rear of the plane, so that onboarding guests are immediately immersed into a lounge atmosphere reminiscent of a luxury hotel lobby. In fact, the first three of the five cabin zones are dedicated to socializing and entertaining passengers with unique appointments and designs throughout. “At the entrance of the Manhattan, above the divan, is muraled artwork of the ‘industrial revolution and how New York conquered the world’ storyline art,” Beever explains. “Then you come into the bar area with a sofa that is next to a window and a bar that comes away from the wall with foldout seats, so we’re showing some innovation and clever use of space while executing all the details with leather and wood finishes in the way you would expect in a luxury aircraft.” The next cabin zone is for entertainment, with a large, 42-inch television and another sofa that continues the

socializing atmosphere. Farther back is the “recovery room” that offers quieter lounging space that might be found in a typical private jet. Beyond that, a “crystal room” features dining for six, served by the support staff that prepare meals from the rear of the aircraft. The Hollywood interior follows the same layout, with a focus on telling the Hollywood story from the Sunset Tower to the goddesses of the silver screen, Howard Hughes, and the 1934 Rolls Royce, all depicted in ceiling murals and in the headliner and the sidewall panels. “We’ve created the ultimate charter experience where the party starts when you take off, not just when you land,” Beever says. “We are bringing back experiential flight and focusing on what can be done in the modern era of aircraft interiors.” These Embraer interiors are available for order now, and can be completed within 24 months. SCHOLASTIC SPORTS

LACROSSE ROADS THE BOYS’ LACROSSE TEAM AT CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL DOES MORE THAN PLAY LACROSSE. For the Dons boys’ lacrosse team at Cathedral Catholic High School, there are just as many lessons to be learned off the field. It starts from a brotherhood developed during 6:30 a.m. training two-to-three times a week—conditioning, lifting, and agility work—that extends to an off-season regimen. The boys get swim conditioning and even yoga instruction. “The practice of yoga benefits the boys on levels deeper than just physical strength, flexibility and athleticism,” says acclaimed author, coach and yogi Lex Ferrier, who leads the weekly class. “Athletes [need] to learn skills such as mindfulness, self-awareness and meditation techniques, which benefits their lives on and off the field.” Another life lesson learned by the Dons is giving back. Many volunteer with local service organizations, including Chelsea’s Light Foundation, Cathedral’s Campus Ministry program and Teen Volunteers in Action (among many others). They also give back by coaching youth lacrosse in their free time as well—whether it be at clinics, local recreational league teams or middle-school club teams. Seniors Landon Pinchin and Marcus Yandall have coached middle-school teams in Carmel Valley for the last two years; classmate Jack Pharies guided an under-15 club team all last summer and fall; junior Chase Winship provides private and group instruction for a number of young players each month. At the start of the 2017 season, the team got involved with

the Friends of Jacalyn Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of children battling pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers. Cathedral Catholic Boys’ Lacrosse is currently searching for an adoptee that can join the team and look forward to making a difference by inviting another family to become a Don.

2017 SENIOR PROFILES

The 2017 Dons Lacrosse team is led by senior co-captains Mo Mirer, a midfielder committed to Notre Dame, and Nick Doyle, who will attend and play at the University of MarylandBaltimore County this fall. Both players were key contributors to the Cathedral Catholic football team that won the California Division 1A State Championship in December, and both look forward to great educations and Division I lacrosse careers. Mirer maintains a 4.2 GPA and is a returning All-City League, All-American and Under Armour West All-Star selection. He leads the team in goals in the 2017 campaign and serves as offensive leader. Mirer also distinguished himself when he returned an interception for a touchdown in the football state championship game, giving the Dons a late lead. Nick Doyle holds a 3.2 GPA as a two-sport standout and is active in Links Achievers of San Diego and Jack and Jill of America. Doyle is the Dons’ defensive leader, the heartbeat of the team and plans to study communications at UMBC.

Both the academics and the lacrosse program at CCHS are designed to prepare young people for college and beyond. The principles of fellowship, accountability, hard work, compassion and faith are the cornerstones of the growth formula. Lacrosse is known as “the fastest game on two feet” and dictates that 10 individuals work in concert toward a common objective, requiring all these principles to succeed. Eight senior Dons will join the ranks of NCAA athletes this fall:

Sophomore players Eddie Shannon, Alex Fairman and Oliver Mirer played for the Under Armour West All-Star team last summer, and the younger Mirer recently verbally committed to attend and play for the University of Michigan. New to the program this year, but already a varsity contributor, freshman Christian Evans also recently verbally committed to the University of Denver as part of the recruiting class of 2020. Perhaps the real hero of the 2017 Dons Lacrosse program is a junior named Garrett Lombardi. He was diagnosed at three years old with Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, a hip disorder that has led to six surgeries, the latest coming in December of his freshman year, and has bound him to a wheelchair at four different points in his life. He fought through his rehabilitation and enjoyed two years as a successful starting attackman on the Dons junior varsity team. As his junior year approached, Lombardi realized that there were no returning varsity goalies in the program and seemingly no one volunteering to step up… so he did. He immediately started training, which for a goalie means having hard rubber balls regularly hit you at speeds of up to 95-100 mph, not to mention learning how to handle a new type of stick. His tireless efforts have paid off, as he earned the starting goalie spot and has been an anchor in the cage all season. His story personifies the selflessness, unity and brotherhood that the program preaches, and his sacrifices for his team truly epitomize the Spirit of the Don. With an unmatched campus facility and a culture of academic and athletic achievement, the school plays a large role in shaping the standards and enabling its students through countless sports, clubs and other extracurricular activities in addition to an everexpanding list of academic programs and classes.

An uproarious comedy about a bohemian theatre troupe who find themselves performing in an Eastern European police state. However, there is more drama backstage than onstage, with romantic entanglements, political intrigue and a wildly funny climax. It’s a laugh a minute, and you’ll leave the theatre reveling in the merriment.”

7 MINI PRODUCTS TO REMEMBER ON YOUR TRIP THESE TRAVEL-SIZE TOILETRY STAPLES NEED TO BE IN YOUR SUITCASE

Pacifica Deodorant Wipes

—$9, ULTA Planes, trains and automobiles all have one thing in common: a serious lack of temperature control. While going between shivers and sweats is sometimes unavoidable when traveling, at least you don’t have to sacrifice smelling nice and fresh all day. These handy deodorant wipes are designed to be quick to apply, convenient to carry and pleasantly scented, no matter how you travel. Plus, they’re natural and leave no residue.

Bumble and Bumble Prêt-àPowder

—$13, bumbleandbumble.com Get ready for the ultimate travel 3-in-1. This magical powder from Bumble and Bumble does it all, combining equal parts dry shampoo, style extender and volumizer in one tiny TSAapproved bottle. The formula revives day-old hair styles and absorbs excess oil on both the scalp and hair strands to keep your hair looking as fresh as possible (even if you’re coming off a red-eye!)

Clinique Moisture Surge

—$12, ULTA Air travel can sap moisture from skin. The air at extremely high altitudes, like the ones planes commonly fly at, can’t hold any moisture and will leave your skin as dry as the Sahara. For when you need deep hydration ASAP, Clinique’s Moisture Surge is to the rescue. Keep it in your carry-on or purse for quick access.

TRAVEL BEAUTY TIPS!

TRAVEL TIPS! HAVE SOFT, SMOOTH SKIN NO MATTER HOW FAR YOU TRAVEL Whether you’re off to a wedding, partaking in a family reunion or jet-setting halfway across the world, traveling can be stressful—especially when you want to look your best. With all of the great moisturizers available, it’s easy to step onto a plane with hydrated, glowing skin, but the effects of a pressurized cabin airplane can make it difficult to maintain. The 30,000 feet altitude can rob your skin of approximately half its moisture and, by the end of your flight, leave your skin dull, blotchy and dry. If you have oily skin, your oil glands can overcompensate for the lack of moisture and produce even more oil, potentially causing blemishes. Product-wise, here are a few things you can do to ensure your skin is protected during travel and keep it radiant during your destination stay.

PURCHASE TRAVELSIZE CONTAINERS

Instead of purchasing drugstore travel-size products that are filled with inferior ingredients which can leave skin looking dull, dry or broken out, transfer your products into smaller travelsize containers such these by Conair ($12.30). This eliminates the guessing game of finding potentially terrible products that already come in travel-size. Sticking to a skincare routine that your skin has adapted to will keep your skin looking its best. 42

REFRESH AND REPLENISH YOUR SKIN DURING FLIGHT

Be sure to make room in your carry-on for these must-have travel buddy products. On longer flights, wash your face and re-apply moisturizer. Kaia Naturals Juicy Bamboo Facial Cleansing Clothes ($19.50) makes this process easy. These bamboo fiber cleansing cloths nourish the skin with organic essential oils and vitamins while gently cleansing away dirt and makeup. If your skin is feeling parched, apply Quench Moisturizer by Osmosis Pur Medical Skincare ($50). Quench contains high amounts of hyaluronic acid, organic shea butter and jojoba seed oil to restore the epidermal barrier. For oily skin types, keep blotting papers such as Natural Premium ($6.95) on hand so skin feels fresh and looks shine free. It’s made of natural linens and dusted with natural green tea to draw out impurities and absorb excess oils.

Where Summer Never Ends

APPLY LIP TREATMENT LIBERALLY

Skip the long-lasting lipsticks, as they will only dehydrate your mouth. Instead, opt for a hydrating lip balm such as Lucern Bio-Suisse Lip Enhancing Treatment ($45). This next-generation lip care treatment rejuvenates and quickly rehydrates delicate skin, adding a beautiful shine with co-enzyme Q10, lipo-amino acids, vitamin C, polyglycerides from organic sunflower oil and organic sweet almond oil.

PALM SPRINGS BY JESS YACOVELLE

PLUSH IN PALM SPRINGS THE LUXURY AND CHARM OF THE ROSSI HOTEL

Palm Springs—while a mecca for culture, art and golf—is more famous for its stifling summer nights and warm fall days. The charming desert city, though filled with fine dining and high-end resorts, lies nearly empty for months at a time during the summer, as travelers stay away from the oppressive heat. While the streets of Palm Springs can burn from the sun, there is a quaint oasis sequestered a few blocks from downtown, a place couples can go to escape both the overwhelming heat and stress of their daily lives— that place is the Rossi Hotel. This small boutique hotel is an isolated retreat designed for couples to spend time together and reconnect. Formerly known as the San Giuliano Hotel, the property underwent a subtle rebranding in 2016 and became the Rossi Hotel. The rooms were renovated with secluded luxury in mind, each space designed to showcase added amenities and unique antiques curated from throughout the world. Each of the eight suites on the property is a private refuge tucked beneath the striking shadow of the San Jacinto Mountains, a romantic hotspot reminiscent of an intimate honeymoon. Each of the rooms is equipped with a number of luxury amenities, including a private entrance and personal patio, a goose down comforter and pillows, an ironing board and accompanying iron, sweet air conditioning and a personal room safe. Even the smallest suites offer basic kitchen amenities, such as a small refrigerator, a microwave, a Verismo coffeemaker and a blender, with some of the larger rooms including a kitchenette with a stovetop. Each room also boasts an HD tv, DVD Player and free WiFi. As far as in-room amenities, the Rossi Hotel checks all of the right boxes, yet it’s the opulent decor that makes the Rossi distinct. There are no cookie-cutter decorations or designs; each room features a characteristic ambiance evocative of Mediterranean travel—from the Fountain room, which features a large, secluded courtyard and soothing fountain, to the Sunset Hacienda, with its shimmering curtains representing a vibrant desert evening, each space is a brilliant display of passion breathing through the decor. That passion stems from the Rossi’s owner and designer, Marina Rossi. After building a luxury fashion brand that found success among the stars, Rossi turned to her love of real estate and founded the Rossi Hotel Group in 2005. Redeveloping the San Giuliano Hotel into a unique relaxation destination has been a pet project of Marina Rossi’s for years. In regards to the recent renovations, the property was designed with her guests firmly in mind. “Physical, mental [and] spiritual relaxation,” Rossi says about her vision for the hotel. “The Rossi is a retreat for couples to grow closer… and I love that about our hotel.” It’s a romantic hideaway, a sanctuary from reality doused in both comfort and splendor. Each room’s private patio—with a personal jacuzzi hot tub, plush seating and often mountain views—feels like a secluded (CONTINUED...)

garden in the midst of Palm Springs. Unlike large-scale hotel chains, the Rossi is focused on guest tranquility, not massproducing soulless spaces. Lush greenery and dessert flowers surround the quaint pool located in the central courtyard, where even the trees are adorned with decorations from around the world. What the Rossi Hotel lacks in big-budget buffets and unsightly fitness centers is easily forgotten with the boutique property’s personal touches and private experiences. While the Rossi is an adults-only location, pets are more than welcome on hotel grounds, in the rooms and by the pool. The Rossi also provides a myriad of exclusive in-room experiences available for guests, including spa treatments that range from a light Swedish massage to body treatments such as seaweed wraps and facials. All treatments are offered in the privacy of

the suite or personal patio. The same is true for the Rossi Hotel’s in-room private dining. Each meal is personally prepared by professional chef Deanna Benson on the guest’s exclusive patio and customized for individual tastes. Though Benson specializes in cooking healthy California cuisine—with a focus on fresh, in-season vegetables and herbs—Benson offers a number of different options for guests, including filet mignon, sautéed prawns and ahi poke citrus salad. Benson is available for private breakfasts, lunches and dinners on the property, booked in advance. With its secluded, yet central, location just blocks from the main strip of downtown Palm Springs, the Rossi Hotel is a cool oasis to take shelter from the desert’s blistering rays with your loved one for a romantic getaway. BLISSFUL IN BALI BALINESE PARADISE IN UBAD, INDONESIA

Ubud has been long recognized as a natural, cultural and artistic paradise in Bali, and anyone who has visited the area will tell you there is a sort of magic in the air. In fact, it was named Ubud -- Indonesian for “medicine” -- after it was found to be a source of healing herbs and plants

BY LAUREN WARNELL

However, with Bali’s popularity growing since the ’60s -- and rising exponentially as the “Love” in the 2009 Julia Roberts movie, “Eat Pray Love” -- finding those tranquil spots filled with rice paddies and palm trees is a more discerning task. Just 10 minutes from the center of Ubud, Chapung Se is a hidden gem that manages to retain the charm and influences that have lured international travellers to the area for decades. Driving through the emerald green rice paddies along the entrance to the resort, you can practically feel any worries melting away before you even arrive. Perched above the Osh river valley and facing the tropical rainforest, Chapung Se delights all of the senses with stunning views, the sounds of birds

It features a fully functional kitchen, private garden and even a traditional Balinese cabana. The rooms are spacious and the hardest decision you will have to make is whether to shower in the indoor or outdoor bathrooms. The minimalist design and peaceful ambience also leave lots of space to relax and declutter the mind. The included breakfast can be served in the villa if it just seems just too hard to leave the comfortable bed and rainforest views, or in the Jungle Fish Restaurant. The menu is extensive. There is a full breakfast buffet with tropical fruits, cheeses, pastries, cereals and delicious juices, plus your choice of an item from the a la carte menu. The Avocado di Caprio comes highly recommended.

monkey forest where you can get up close and personal with the long-tailed macaque. Further afield, Bali is steeped in culture and nature, with tropical beaches, centuries-old rice terraces and temples galore. The island offers a vast array of different activities including dolphinwatching, hot springs, snorkelling, botanical gardens and ancient temples. And the best part is that the hotel will organize your the whole activity package for you. But if relaxing is at the top of your itinerary, you don’t need to travel any further than the Chapung spa, found just beyond the pool bar at the resort. Offering a range of head–totoe treatments including aruveydic massages, facial treatments, hot stone

singing in the trees, and the smell of tropical flowers and incense filling the air. It boasts eight villas, two restaurants, a large spa and a spectacular infinity pool (with accompanying bar), all designed to maximise your views of the surrounding area. As a professional furniture designer, the owner has a keen eye for detail and has decorated the resort and villas with materials such as wood, volcanic stone, bamboo and marble to create a homely feel. Each villa has a unique design but all encompass the overall themes of minimalist, modern, intimate and spacious. For a truly exuberant experience, the “luxury pool residence” offers two villas with floor-to-ceiling windows that provide unrivalled views of the rainforest alongside your own private infinity pool.

If you can tear yourself away from the villa, and like something a bit more social, then one of the most unique and fun features of Chapung Se is the Jungle Fish pool bar on site. This trendy spot features loungers, hanging beds and cabanas all facing a large infinity pool with views of the river valley just beyond. It has an upbeat, fun vibe with day visitors and hotel guests soaking up the atmosphere, and is perfect to swim, chill out and enjoy a cocktail. Days can be spent relaxing in the villa, splashing about in the pool or -- if you feel more energetic -- you can make use of the hotel’s shuttle service or bicycles into the center of Ubud. As the art capital of Bali, you can find small temples and traditional or contemporary art galleries down its flower-strewn streets. This is also the site of the sacred

therapies and nail care, the spa is the professionalism and experience of the therapists. All hotel bookings include a 15-minute welcome massage but it is highly recommended to try some other treatments while you have the chance. When the night closes in, the valley cools and mist creeps up the ravine, giving the Di Abing restaurant a cozy, comfortable and even romantic ambience. The fine-dining spot is mostly open-air, save for the roof so you can continue to enjoy the sounds and sights of the rainforest while you dine. The restaurant serves dishes inspired by Mediterranean and Asian influences and uses only premium ingredients, with the majority of the vegetables coming from the hotel’s own organic garden. They also have an extensive drinks menu and wine cellar within the restaurant.

HEAVENLY HOTELS

HEAVENLY HOTELS OPTIONS ABOUND WITH TWO LOCAL RESORTS

Two San Diego hotels, one in North County and one in South County, offer unparalleled luxury—a delicious combination of invigoration and restorative energy. They are similar enough, yet they have distinctive ambiances and experiences.

LA VALENCIA HOTEL It’s easy to see why Hollywood celebrities, European royalty and coastal elites throughout the ages have flocked to La Valencia in La Jolla for decades. The property exudes warmth and an immediate sense of being well-cared for. Alternatively known as the Pink Lady, the 90-year-old grand dame on bustling Prospect Street greets all who enter with an immediate, seemingly infinite view of the Pacific Ocean. Not allowing time to stand still, the ever-evolving decor infuses modern wall art with Spanish and Mediterranean tiles in most public spaces. To the right, French village and country scenes in Cafe la Rue set off the trendy, horseshoeshaped bar for a casual dining and watering-hole experience. Further inside, refurbished original hand-painted ceilings are complemented with chic new creations, serving an eclectic fusion of vintage and modern motifs. And the creme de la creme? A floor to ceiling window with nothing but sea to feast your eyes upon, with the fragrance of salt air penetrating the nostrils... And that’s just the lobby! Several event spaces continue the historical synthesis of art deco with modern flourishes. This includes the latest in scrumptious cuisine creations by executive chef Alex Emery. Between the fresh air Ocean View Terrace, the refurbished MED restaurant with patio seating streetside, and the impeccable seaview bookending the great room, banquets and wedding receptions have become hot commodities, along with numerous other hotel-sponsored events. In fact, when La 56

Additionally, the Spa La V is being reinvented and refurbished to offer private memberships to the community by the end of 2017. With so much to access from this breathtaking spot perched on La Jolla cliff, one can investigate all the wider community has to offer then return for a dip in the pool and an impeccable dinner as the setting sun streaks vivid orange and yellow hues across the horizon. MR. RICH & FAMOUS ON WHAT’S UP(SCALE) IN SIN CITY BY COREY LEVITAN

W

hat happens in Las Vegas is change. The biggest one took place 21 years ago. Thanks to Steve Wynn’s Bellagio, the former $8 buffet town flowered almost overnight into a world-class destination. But the little changes haven’t stopped, or even slowed. When is the last time you Vegas-ed? If it’s been more than two years, you can make a week-long vacation out of only the highest-end restaurants, shops and nightspots that have opened since your last visit and never repeat a single thing. With so much change to choose from, we asked one of the only constants in town, Robin Leach, to pare the field down to his favorites. The former “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” host arrived in Las Vegas 21 years ago—coincidentally, along with the Bellagio—and has been the arbiter of expensive Sin City taste ever since.

FINE DINING BEAUTY & ESSEX Cosmopolitan

You can’t go wrong starting at the Cosmopolitan, the ritzy epicenter of haute-couture dining, shopping and nightlife in the new Las Vegas. Its most impressive new culinary offering, according to Leach, hides behind a pawn shop on the third floor. This TAO Group transplant from Manhattan features tattooed chef Chris Santos’s unique “sharing small bites” menu. According to Leach, “it’s all about communal eating unforgettable food that takes classic, oldschool comfort favorites and gives them a totally new twist at the highest level.” Its eclectic offerings include French Onion Soup Dumplings (baked inside a ball of crusty fromage), Tuna Poke Wonton Tacos and Tomato Tartare on a parmesan crostini. Leach calls it “never boring and quite addictive.” While you eat, raincoat-clad models wander the two large dining rooms “ready to flash you in their take-your-breath-away lingerie as they display the watches and trinkets the pawnshop has for sale.”

LAGO Bellagio This primo Italian spot operates under the guidance of famed chef Julian Serano, known for the small plates and bold flavors on display at his tapas joint at Aria. “Incredible modern mini-bites take on Italian food and impeccable service,” Leach raves. And the eats are paired with the best view in town: of the Bellagio lake and its waterfountain shows.

MR. CHOW Caesars Palace The celebs who have flocked for decades to restaurateur Michael Chow’s upscale Chinese eatery in Beverly Hills finally have a Las Vegas home base. The former Empress Court space at Caesars Palace is now what Leach refers to as “the high temple of Chinese delicacies.” And the floorshow—a noodle chef turning a bag of flour into the world’s longest noodles—is, Leach says, “a spectacle worth putting into Absinthe—even without a topless chef!”

FINE DINING SUGARCANE RAW BAR GRILL Venetian Award-winning chef Timon Balloo offers globally inspired small plates from three kitchen concepts—an open-fire grill, raw bar and traditional kitchen—all “pulled off with total mastery,” according to Leach. Its unique menu items include Kombu Marinated Fluke (a sashimi dish that cooks itself on seaweed) and the Whole Roasted Chicken, which Leach says “may be the best chicken dish in all of America.”

THE MODERNIST CUISINE GALLERY The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace Author and chef Nathan Myhrvold has produced some of the most stunning and beautifully photographed cookbooks ever. This summer, he will sell prints of the food photography exhibit that has toured museums around the U.S. Leach calls them “unequaled masterpieces.”

FINE ENTERTAINMENT PARK THEATER Monte Carlo

Lance Burton’s former showroom is still doing magical things—such as presenting Cher, Ricky Martin and Bruno Mars in exclusive concert residencies. The 5,200-seater features one of the largest video mapping stages in the world.

THE PARK between Monte Carlo and New York, New York

TONY TRAN

After a show at the Park Theater, the perfect nightcap is only footsteps away: a brand new inner-city park with trees, plants, benches and modern sculptures ringed by restaurants, including Sake Rock, where a roving MC— according to Leach, “a cross between Ziggy Stardius and “Cabaret’s” Alan Cummins—drinks sake bombs with customers whenever someone orders an expensive platter of sushi and sashimi.

FINE SHOPPING

SOHO MIAMI The Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian Leach’s top shopping pick offers men and women “unique European designs” and “a wonderfully pleasant, efficient, helpful sales staff,” according to Leach. It creates “a very pleasant shopping experience.” Adds Leach, “Nothing is too much bother for the sales manager and her ladies in this creative boutique. They’re knowledgeable about sizing, what’s in stock and what can be ordered.”

DSQUARED2 The Shops at Crystals This unisex Italian boutique, run by Canadian twin brothers Dean and Dan Caten, costumed Ricky Martin and his entire dance cast of his new show at the Monte Carlo. According to Leach, the 324,000-square-foot store presents a “unique, very modern hip twist on male clothing.” 64

CIGARBOX 4046 Dean Martin Drive If you’re like Leach, your idea of a great night out is lighting up a stogie instead of a dancefloor. And this joint, located off-Strip by the Rio, is the place to enjoy a drink and a smoke, according to Leach. Run by Michael Frey (Casa Fuente), it features walkin humidor and leading brands from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua.

Becoming a “suddenly better” partner or parent MIRANDA: Many people with issues that can be detrimental to their position in a divorce, such as substance-abuse problems, begin to shape up quickly and conspicuously when they plan on filing. This is particularly true where child custody will be an issue, as they don’t want to get nailed with any recent allegations of activity that might be considered detrimental to the best interest of the child. So, at the advice of their attorney, they’ll overtly clean up their act. For example, they won’t drink around the house anymore or will go out and finally obtain that medical marijuana card. Similarly, a working or “busy” parent who FACEBOOK.COM/FINEMAGAZINES

has primarily delegated parenting tasks to the other spouse will suddenly start to show an interest in Johnny’s underwater basket-weaving class. This false status quo of involvement will be used as a point of reference in a contested custody matter to countervail the non-working or “less busy” parent’s contention that they have a stronger bond with the child. 4. The brush-off from shared financial professionals ANTONYAN: Often, one of the spouses makes most or all of the money for the household. The “out” spouse may detect that the CPA, financial planner or similar professionals theoretically working for both parties no longer returns phone calls or has straightforward answers—as if they’ve been told by the breadwinner not to disclose information to the out spouse. 5. An intentional business slowdown MIRANDA: A primarily commission-driven spouse may no longer sell as many widgets as they historically have, even though the market for widgets remains constant. An hourly employee may no longer have the desire to earn [what’s] needed or available overtime. A business owner may abruptly put their grand plans to expand the business on hold. Essentially, be on the lookout for signs that the spouse is no longer earning at their normal capacity, as this is a common way to artificially deflate income at or about the time of the divorce filing (so that their financial support exposure will be lessened). 6. Chronicling arguments MIRANDA: It’s common for a spouse who is going to file for divorce to record arguments with the other spouse, whereas historically these types of arguments would have resolved organically or without fanfare. The idea is to document “evidence” for a restraining order and/or a custody dispute. At the advice of some attorneys, a spouse [could] attempt to turn a normal argument into something much more severe by exaggerating it, then dialing 911 so that there’s a police report and possibly an arrest. This documents that there was an incident and which spouse was the “victim.” Since documented domestic violence permeates everything from child custody to spousal support orders, the accused spouse can find themselves digging their way out of a hole before the proceedings even begin. ANTONYAN: Also, we see a lot of threats and statements made in the heat of an argument, which are then repeated in a text message or email, when in the past they would have been dismissed by the recipient—“I can’t believe you said you’re going to take the children out of the state tonight,” or worse. This could be a trap. If you don’t respond, or respond without refuting the statement, then it can be argued later in court that it is an admission. It becomes even more important to make the record clear when those text messages document false accusations of domestic violence. Unfortunately, those are often used to get an unfair advantage in custody and visitation battles to keep the other parent from seeing the children.

7. Money transfers from joint accounts into separate accounts MIRANDA: Transferring large sums of money out of the joint bank account into an account in one spouse’s name alone may be a sign of an imminent divorce. Some spouses may do this in the hopes of building a war chest for the divorce proceeding while concurrently starving the other spouse out. Others may do this in an attempt to eschew the automatic temporary restraining orders that become effective once a divorce is filed. No matter the reason, it is not a good sign if the marriage is already rocky. 8. A sudden burst of plastic surgery ANTONYAN: If your spouse suddenly decides to get cosmetic surgery when there has been no prior indication of that being a primary concern of theirs, that may be a sign. Aside from the obvious thought that they may be cosmetically improving to re-enter the dating scene, they may also decide to do this before they file for divorce so that it will presumptively be a community-property debt, meaning that the “unimproved” spouse will also be liable for half the cost. That sounds harsh, but it is not uncommon and makes for a good trial brief.

SO WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH ILONA & TIM? They actually met in family court. They never had a case against each other, but both say that if they did, the other one would have won. Yes, they used to date many years ago. “When we were dating, we would have dinner at 11 p.m. on a weeknight and spend our other time together working on laptops, preparing for trial,” Miranda says. “We even did this on our ‘vacations’ together,” Antonyan adds. “This was not good for our dating relationship, but it really made the business partnership a nobrainer.” “The ironies abound since we’re in the divorce business,” Miranda says. “But having had that personal relationship prior to the business one, she and I were able to gain a mutual trust and respect for one another that’s made our professional relationship successful.” In fact, they see their business partnership as living proof that people can continue working together after their romantic partnership ends—an important message for divorcing parents, who should always work together for the sake of the kids. “Life doesn’t end with a divorce. It begins,” Ilona says.

THING NEW BEGINNINGS

A

cross our nation, our colleges have just graduated their latest crop of kids who will now move into the next chapter of their lives. As they say goodbye to their universities, they are handed the parchment they have worked so hard for and are now young professional adults. Some will stay on for graduate work, but the vast majority are now America’s newest best and brightest. I was invited by an old friend to attend the graduation of his son at San Diego State University, one of the many ceremonies held on Aztec Mesa in May. As the students came off the stage clutching their cherished degrees, hugs and tears were exchanged with promises to stay in touch. In reality, this group will scatter off to new beginnings and adventures. One young lady with a degree in aviation engineering bubbled with excitement about her new job at JPL in Palmdale, where she will work on the next generation of space exploration vehicles. Another young man, whose degree was in microbiology,

will remain at home here and take a position with a biotech firm in Torrey Pines. There are thousands of stories of hopes and dreams launched on graduation day. How many of you remember as a child wanting to be a policeman or fireman? Then, a few years later, maybe wanting to be an astronaut, and then (as you worked through to the higher grades and learned more about what might be out there) an actor, musician, architect, doctor or lawyer? For many, these hopes and dreams come with a high price still to be paid. Soon, the notes on the student loans that financed many of their educations will be due. It’s shameful that we nurture from childhood onward a choice of career paths that then burden us with crushing debt upon graduation. And every couple of years, it becomes more and more expensive to achieve that dream career. The Obama administration took the student loan programs out of the hands of banks and placed them under the

control of the federal government. The banks would compete for these loans and offer rates as low as 4%, with interest not started until after graduation and payments spread out at least 10 years. Today’s student loans offered solely by the government are 10% and can take as long as 30 years to repay. A doctor friend of mine explained it to me like this: “When I graduated, I had almost $400,000 in student loans to repay. [It’s] like graduating and having a mortgage payment to make on a house every month.” Today, most students repay many times over what was borrowed due to this high interest rate. If the government wants to run this program, then they should make it easier for our students to get financed for the education they need to enter the workforce without being crushed with debt upon arrival. This can be done in several ways. Student loans should have an interest rate tied to the same as the U.S. treasury bonds the government issues to finance our nation’s debt. Currently, a 10-year U.S. Treasury bond yields 2.33% annually. Why should our young adults pay more than four times in interest what the government pays to borrow that same money? Many of our grads will choose one of our military branches after graduating, enlisting for six years or more. Their debt should all be forgiven upon completion of duty. If America wants to have the best and the brightest, then we must make it more affordable and easier for our families. My father told me when I was young, “An education is the only thing you can get for yourself, but you have to earn it.” I believe our youth should get the very best education possible without getting robbed of their livelihoods.
