It’s the new Tesla X, a crossover sport utility vehicle that’s the most anticipated new electric car model in several years. Built upon the surging success of the Tesla Model S, the new SUV is a fully–electric vehicle—requiring no gas or oil—with a range of 240 miles on a full charge and a top speed of 155 mph. That’s about three times farther than any other all–electric vehicle currently on the market. However, the real beauty of this baby is not just in its astounding numbers, but also in its design, starting with “Falcon Wing” doors that open upward and out of the way to give passengers easy access to the seven bucket seats in the second and third rows of the Model X. All the seats are heated and ventilated (cooled) to further enhance passengers’ comfort and a smart air suspension has GPS memory to adjust the ride of the Model X to the particular terrain it is traversing.

The fully electric crossover SUV also comes with all–wheel–drive by adding a second electric motor to independently power both sets of wheels, helping to keep the Model X on the straight and narrow even when wet El Niño weather conditions persist.

It’s anticipated that a new autopilot feature will soon be available that will enable drivers of the Model X to navigate traffic, stay in freeway lanes safely away from other vehicles and obey posted speed limits automatically.

Warriors on the Mesa AN INTERVIEW WITH AZTEC COACH STEVE FISHER

ovember is the start of the San Diego State University Aztecs Men’s Basketball season, and nothing this month will ignite the city more than the return of the Aztecs to Montezuma Mesa.

What was once a team covered in a 20 second sound bite during the late–night news and a couple of column inches the next day in the UT is now a leading news story. All this began 15 years ago with the arrival of celebrated Head Coach Steve Fisher, who started with a team fresh off a 4–22 season and turned it all around in just a few years. Now, 25+ win seasons and a visit to the NCAA Tournament have become the norm. No other men’s basketball program has shown the level of improvement of the Aztecs under Coach Fisher. Last month we were able to visit with Coach Fisher as practices for this season were just getting underway.

Fine Magazine: This year the Aztecs will play their cross–town rivals, the University of San Diego Toreros, for the first basketball game ever at Petco Park on December 5th.. How did all that come about?

Coach Fisher: We have had a great working relationship with the Padres and PETCO Park. When it was brought up as a possibility, we thought it sounded like a great idea. San Diego is an event city and this is a unique event. I don’t know that [a college basketball game at an outdoor Major League Baseball stadium] has ever been done before.

I think it will be fun for both schools and it will be a one–of–a–kind– event that will draw a lot of attention both locally and nationally.

Given the record the Aztecs have had over the past few seasons, how much has the recruiting process changed from when you first took over this program 15 years ago?

When we first came to San Diego State, we knocked on every door. We were not afraid to knock on the door of guys that were thinking about going pro out of high school. Now, more of those same type of people open the door when we knock. The process has not changed a great deal but the significant interest from recruits has increased greatly.

Looking back on your personal reflections, what were those days with the Fab Five like from 91–93?

It was a tremendous experience and a great deal of enjoyment. Much was made by others before any of them had walked in the building.

To no fault of their own, the celebration and scrutiny of who they were started long before they stepped foot on campus. They were a unique group that was immensely talented, prioritized winning over all else and had a tremendous feeling for one another.

What are some of your most memorable moments in your 40 years as a coach?

Winning a national championship in as unique a fashion as there has ever been… From taking over two days before we opened NCAA tournament play to having a personal invitation to the White House from President George Bush and everything that goes along with a

national championship. I would say that going to our first NCAA tournament at San Diego State was a thrill that no one associated with this university will ever forget…The ability over a career to build relationships with players that have lasted a lifetime. The sons and daughters of former players that are friends of ours is as cherished and memorable of a moment for my family as you could possibly have.

What legacy do you want to leave on Montezuma Mesa—besides a potential national championship–caliber men’s basketball program?

The experience at San Diego State, from day one, the open arms we received when we came here, to the love affair we have had with our students that created an atmosphere second to none, to building a program that has given all of us immense joy. I am so grateful to have been a part of this University and this community. When we came, we talked about building a program and we have built a program.

Today, the Aztecs have become one of the hottest tickets in town with 55 straight sold out home games. In fact, season tickets for the 2015–16 season are already gone. Even though the home schedule is sold out, you can still watch the Aztecs on the road in games at Long Beach State, against USD at Petco Park and over the Thanksgiving holiday at the Continental Tires Las Vegas Invitational.

BLISSFUL THINKING ORANGE COUNTY–BASED BLISS PADDLE YOGA MAKES A SPLASH AT MISSION BAY

hen every day feels like a never– ending to–do list, you may wonder if you’re ever going to have time to breathe, let alone give yourself time to relax. But relaxation is important and allowing yourself to unwind and recharge will give you strength to tackle everything moving forward. Yoga is a great way to relieve stress and renew your energy so you can better focus on the task at hand, whatever that may be.

The idea of using breathing and relaxation as a mechanism for creating a healthier lifestyle is the entire premise behind Bliss Paddle Yoga, a company launched in Laguna Beach with regular

classes in Newport Beach and San Diego’s own Mission Bay. Modern paddle boarding is a Hawaiian sport derived from surfing and adapted for today’s lifestyle of fun in the sun and on the water. Paddle board yoga takes the magic and tranquility of the ocean and joins it with the focus and flexibility exercises of yoga.

“I’d always thought early on that stand up paddling was such a great activity,” Bliss Paddle Yoga owner and founder Taylor Chaput said. “With paddle boarding, it’s not as intense [as surfing]; it’s more blissful, and that’s what inspired the name.”

Chaput began paddle boarding when she ventured into the crystalline waters of Laguna Beach with her mother and quickly fell in love with the sport. Shortly after, she transitioned to practicing yoga on the boards, igniting her passion for paddle board yoga.

Chaput founded Bliss Paddle Yoga in the summer of 2010, offering classes to the locals of Laguna Beach before expanding her practice to Newport Beach and San Diego the following year.

“The demand is growing so much with the number of people that come to classes,” said Antony Besso, who joined Bliss Paddle Yoga in 2012 and is now part–owner. “We feel like we’re living the dream here in Southern California and particularly in San Diego.”

It’s not surprising that paddle board yoga is growing in popularity.

The practice of yoga and paddle boarding are both meant to inspire calm and encourage a collectiveness of the soul. When combined, they create an incredibly relaxing activity that allows you to mellow out, recalibrate your focus and center your mind and body, something we could all benefit from on a regular basis.

Bliss Paddle Yoga welcomes adventurers of all skill levels, from beginners to skilled yogis. All of the instructors are experienced, well– practiced and coached specifically on paddle board form. Instructors are also required to go through lifeguard routines and SUP rescue techniques in case any problems arise while on the open water. The three–day teacher training is taught regularly at all locations and retreats are often scheduled to allow even more interested people to earn their paddle board yoga teaching certification.

In the past, Chaput has hosted SUP retreats in international waters, including Bali and Costa Rica. Retreats are a way for teachers and students alike to fully embrace the yoga lifestyle by truly removing themselves from the everyday grind. Tropical locations are the perfect setting for relaxing, recharging and letting go of stress. New retreats are always being planned—the next event hosted by Bliss Paddle Yoga will take place in Maui, Hawaii in January 2016 with yogi Laura Sykora.

“What we’re trying to do is become a reference for people who are interested in paddle yoga by teaming up with very inspirational yogis,” Besso said.

Sykora isn’t the only well–known yogi to team up with Bliss Paddle Yoga. The company sponsors many prominent names in the yoga community, including Kathryn Budig, author of The Women’s Health Big Book of Yoga, and Holly Fiske, an avid yoga parent who regularly inspires more than 51,000 followers on Instagram. The aptly–named Bliss Yogis are supported through branded equipment, in–depth interviews and promotion of the water–based yoga lifestyle.

“That’s one of our goals—to get people into the lifestyle of being outside on the water,” Chaput said. “Our hope is that people will keep coming back, or go get on their own board, whatever it is to make it part of their lifestyle.”

The yoga lifestyle is nothing new, of course. People have been practicing the art of relaxation for centuries and little has changed since then. Yoga is still a great way to unwind after a long day or concentrate on sharpening your mental zen skills. Bliss Paddle Yoga actively encourages this method of centering yourself to create a better you.

Weather permitting, every San Diego class meets on the sandy shores of Fanuel Street Park on Mission Bay. Bliss Paddle Yoga supplies and transports all of the necessary equipment, so students can relax before they even get started. From there the class begins with a beach lesson, then paddles out together for the tranquil workout regimen designed by the instructor. Chaput said the company tries to hire and train teachers of various yoga styles to offer a diverse range of practices that everyone can enjoy, from Vinyasa to CorePower Yoga and more.

“Sometimes it’s easier for people to disconnect when they’re out on the water,” Besso said. “It might be a little frightening at first, but if you find yourself out on the water […] it’s so nature–oriented, it kind of brings people back to their roots. It allows people to escape their mind a little more.”

There certainly is something about the open water that allows your mind to drift into serenity, where your daily routines and all of your worries float away with the gentle tide. Ben Affleck achieved success in the entertainment world at a young age and, unlike many of his contemporaries, perpetuated that early prosperity into a successful career. But at some point, Affleck realized that wasn’t enough; though appreciative of his success, he hated the selfish life he lived and began looking for ways to give back. The number “five million deaths” was ultimately his call to action; after he discovered the death toll in Central Africa, he was appalled at the sparse action taking place and moved to change things himself.

Affleck founded the Eastern Congo Initiative in 2010, not to simply donate to a cause, but to help a community improve itself from the inside out. Grants raised by the Eastern Congo Initiative go directly to community–based organizations founded by Congolese people who want to help their personal community with specific improvements in areas that need help, such as economic development and maternal health. By investing directly into the community, rather than a middle–man charity, Affleck and ECI accomplish more, and faster. ECI also promotes advocacy; with greater awareness comes a greater sense of responsibility.

ocated in Escondido’s historic downtown, Bellamy’s is an award– winning restaurant serving California modern cuisine with French influence. An upscale eatery with moderate prices and live music, this delightful spot has something for everyone. With its superbly talented French Master Chef, Patrick Ponsaty, and its farm–to–table ingredients, plus an exceptional pride in supporting local North County farmers, wine makers and sustainable fisherman, Bellamy’s is the kind of restaurant for which we’ve all be searching.

My first time at the restaurant I was greeted by a warm and friendly hostess who guided me to my seat. My server, who would prove to be exceptionally helpful, introduced himself and distributed the captivating menu. As I studied the different selections, I found the live piano tunes to be soothing, the tinkling keys adding to the restaurant’s already intimate ambiance. In a scene where good service is often hard to come by, the excellent service at Bellamy’s is certainly notable; the servers were not only friendly, but took their time reviewing the items and answering any questions regarding the menu.

The extensive collection of appetizers made my mouth water. I chose to start with the Spanish Calamari Steak along with the Mountain Meadow Flatbread, a crisp starter topped with locally grown mushrooms, arugula and parmesan flakes, both of which were perfectly light and delectable. For the main entree, I tried the unique Muscovy Duck Breast with caramelized seasonal fruit and polenta, a delicious and tender preparation. SOUTHERN SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE B Y E M I LY G L A S E R

hristmas may have visions of sugarplums dancing ‘round your head, but it’s Thanksgiving that has you daydreaming of feasts: turkey, ham, stuffing, veggies, and those last, syrupy bites of pie.

There’s one special dish that spans both ends of the turkey day table, an entree sweet enough to be considered dessert but savory enough for dinner; that magical fare is sweet potato casserole. Long favored as the king of the root vegetables in other parts of the country, recently discovered health benefits have boosted the sweeter potato’s spotlight in California, as well.

For a Californian twist on this classically Southern dish, FINE gives you our take on the Thanksgiving favorite.

Sweet Potato Casserole Casserole 3 c baked sweet potatoes, mashed 1/2 c sugar 2 eggs 1/2 c milk 1/4 c butter, softened 1 tsp vanilla Topping 1/3 c flour 1/3 c butter, melted 1 c brown sugar 1 c pecans or walnuts

with topping. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes before serving.

Preheat oven to 350°.

After baking sweet potatoes (we suggest 350° for 60 min. or until tender), mash potatoes.

Add sugar, eggs, milk, butter and vanilla; beat with electric mixer until smooth. Set aside. In a separate bowl, combine topping ingredients and mix until nuts are covered.. Pour sweet potato mixture into 9x13 baking dish, sprinkle

A WORLD OF ART AS SEEN BY YANYA MORTON

ost people reach their teens, if not adulthood, before deciding on their career path— but this was not the case for Yanya Morton. At the youthful age of five, she started creating art and never looked back.

A gifted artist with a lifetime of experience, Yanya uses several mediums with ease. Yanya has travelled all over the world and been exposed to dozens of different cultures; her experiences influence her visions for the new pieces she produces after arriving home. We were able to catch up with Yanya one afternoon between her trips abroad: Fine Magazine: How old were you when you first started to create art and what medium did you use?

Yanya Morton: I began creating art as a young child. I remember being about five years old when I started to take it seriously.

I started drawing portraits with pencil and continued using pencil as my main medium all throughout grade school. It’s a medium that I feel is under–appreciated, yet it is the foundation of all art forms.

When did you enter your first showing?

I entered my first showing in elementary school and continued throughout high school. I won many awards through my school years! During my senior year in high school, I was presented an award of excellence by the Mayor of Calgary for a promotional poster I designed for the Calgary School district. My first showing in California was in La Jolla sixteen years ago; it was my Hawaiian series. The more significant pieces can be seen in the Bali Hai Restaurant in Las Vegas.

Tell us about your experiences in the television and film industry.

My first taste of working in the industry came at the tender of age sixteen when I was invited on the set of the film Jumanji, starring the late Robin Williams. My father was a scenic artist and at that time was the head painter. The elaborate sets were all constructed and painted by hand in those days.

Learning the different techniques used to create such magic was a life–changing experience for me. I have always loved film, but after getting a taste of how sets were created and films were made, I was

hooked. I started as a laborer washing brushes and learned a lot of techniques simply by watching. I was immediately promoted to “set painter” and then “scenic artist.” Painting on such a grand scale was exhilarating to me! I went on to work on films like Happy Gilmore and eventually moved to television series like The Sentinel and Stargate. Working in the film industry is far from glamorous and the hours are grueling. However, knowing that what you have created will be seen my millions of viewers is truly a rewarding experience that I will always cherish.

You have traveled the world and seen exotic locations and cultures—how has this influenced your visions for the art you create?

My travels are the key ingredient to the essential building blocks of my creative process. The experiences of different lands and cultures and people have opened my mind and my soul, allowing access to the unimaginable and the unknown and forcing me to look deep within myself and acknowledge who I really am, whether I like what I see or not. My travels inspire me to be fearless in life and how I transfigure an idea into a concrete body of work. The more I travel and the more I see, the more I realize how little I know and how much more there still is to learn. My travels have instilled in me an insatiable appetite and a curiosity for life– changing experiences. These experiences are and will continue to be the primary driving force behind my work.

What is your favorite medium to work in?

That is a tough question! It depends on my mood. I have gone through a few phases of what my “so–called favorite medium” is! For now it consists of acrylic, oil, collage and gold leaf composite on canvas or on a mannequin or whatever else I may be inspired by. I’m having so much fun combining all of these mediums together. Combined, they allow me the ultimate freedom of expression.

Sticking to one medium seems too confining.

THE FIVE MUST–SEE SHOWS OF THE SEASON

here’s no denying that San Diego’s culture quotient has increased exponentially in recent years.

Though “must–see” is a catchphrase usually applied to television and film, when it comes to the coming artistic season in our fair city, options abound. The most pressing problem is how to choose among the panoplies of not–to–be–missed offerings served up by our cultural institutions in the 2015–2016 season.

Not to worry; FINE explains it all to you in the following compendium.

From opera to symphony to Broadway, here are five outstanding picks that will keep your artistic psyche engaged this season.

San Diego Symphony Notwithstanding their thrilling October 9th through 11th opening weekend conducted by SDS Music Director Jahja Ling that featured high–profile pianist Yuja Wang, the maestro himself admitted that the Choral and Organ Spectacular being presented the weekend of December 11th through 13th has a unique appeal.

“The Berlioz Te Deum has never been performed in the history of the San Diego Symphony,” says Ling. “This is a first.” This bold, colossal work is rarely done and the opportunity to witness its premiere, sung by San Diego’s acclaimed Master Chorale, should not be passed up. In his memoirs, Berlioz referred to this early work as “enormous” and “monumental.” Indeed, at the first performance in 1855 the composer conducted an ensemble of almost 1,000 performers and the electrifying work accompanied the 2000 Olympics torch lighting in Sydney, Australia.

In addition to the Berlioz, Alisa Weilerstein, one of classical music’s most prominent young cellists, and exceptional SDS concertmaster Jeff Thayer will treat audiences to a performance of the popular Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello. All told, this will be a program to remember. sandiegosymphony.org Broadway San Diego Named “Best Musical of the Year” by New York Magazine, and “Bravest New Musical in a Long Time” by the Toronto Star, IF/THEN (January 5–10, 2016) boasts tremendous star power with an original Broadway cast headed by Tony Award–winning superstar Idina Menzel, along with major Broadway stars LaChanze, Anthony Rapp and James Snyder.

Best known for her Tony Award–winning performance in Wicked and as the voice behind the Oscar–winning song “Let it Go” in Frozen, Menzel has become a force of nature on Broadway and in film. IF/THEN Composer Tom Kitt, book writer and lyricist Brian Yorkey and director Michael Greif are also members of the creative team behind the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award–winning musical Next to Normal.

“Having the original core cast from Broadway doesn’t happen very often,” says BSD Associate Marketing Director Christann Heideman. “This cast will only be a part of the tour for 7 cities, including San Diego, so for anyone interested in this show, San Diego is a must–see city.” Tickets for the January opening are available now as part of a 2015–2016 season subscription. broadwaysd.com

San Diego Musical Theatre Producer Erin Lewis thinks all of SDMT’s productions are “must–see,” but acknowledges the special magnetism of 1998 Tony winner Ragtime (February 5–21, 2016). “If someone has never seen it, they need to do themselves a favor,” says Lewis. Those who have seen it will want to revisit it, she adds. “Its pageantry, emotion and hope burst onto the stage like no other musical. The story touches us all… it has the power to make a difference in all our lives.” Indeed, its history, music and themes of wanting to be part of the American Dream and believing that justice will prevail make the show compelling and enduring.

Lewis is justifiably proud of always having full orchestra for SDMT’s productions. “The Ragtime score is particularly exciting,” she says. “It draws on many musical styles… ragtime rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley… klezmer of the Lower East Side, bold brass band marches, delicate waltzes.” Clearly, the music alone is reason to love Ragtime. sdmt.org

San Diego Opera SDO is on the cutting edge this season with the West Coast debut of Jake Heggie’s Great Scott on May 7th, 2016. Directed by Jack O’Brien and with a libretto

by Terrence McNally (Ragtime), this brand new work about opera, juxtaposed with football, features exciting new singers and opera legend Frederica Von Stade.

The unique show has been creating buzz since its SDO premiere was first announced. Football and opera generally are not thought of as belonging in the same universe, but, says Heggie, whose Moby Dick debuted to great acclaim in SDO’S 2012–13 season, “They are together all the time. A lot of sports fans go to the opera… a lot of opera people love sports…

Every town has this duality of sports and arts and the struggle that goes on between them.”

What makes this production so exciting? “Jake speaks with a very American voice. The music is accessible for a lot of different audiences,” says new SDO General Director David Bennett. “The story touches people who’ve chosen the arts—and others—about

choices they’ve made… it’s a glimpse into the struggle and love we all feel for the business of opera.” There’s also specific relevance to San Diego, Bennett says. “It centers on an American city that has both a struggling opera company and a football team, and an opera that’s being premiered to help save the struggling company. San Diego’s opera company and football team certainly have been in the news over the last couple of years.”

A volcano that actually erupts on stage adds to the fun. “And a national anthem sung at the Super Bowl like one you’ve never heard before. It’s imaginative and heartfelt.” As to the importance of contemporary opera, Bennett states, “It’s a way of engaging audiences that I think sometimes feel distanced from traditional opera.”

The process of commissioning and building a new opera can give artistic rejuvenation to an opera company, he adds. “We all have artistic impulses that can be rejuvenated in new work where they’re not always in traditional work.” sdopera.com

North Coast Rep “I am very excited about the West Coast premiere of this theatrical and compelling play,” Artistic Director David Ellenstein says of Way Downriver; William Faulkner’s ‘Old Man’ (April 13–May 8, 2016). Adapted by Edward Morgan from the renowned writer’s short story “Old Man,” Way Downriver depicts an almost insoluble conflict between two vastly different people as they struggle against the destructive power of the ferocious Mississippi River.

How did Ellenstein choose this story? “The play started as a workshop at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s Southern Writers Project,” he says. “It was so successful that they produced the world premiere the following year.

Its thematic content—taking responsibility for actions, doing the right thing even without reward, an intriguing look at human relations—stay with us to this day.” With its racial undercurrent, multiple locales and live music, the play truly sounds like the “night to remember in the theatre” that Ellenstein describes.

TAKING PRIDE

fter years of work, the $175 million restoration of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York is nearing completion. His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan the Archbishop of New York, while touring the interior of the Cathedral would from occasionally stop to speak with some of the workers on the project. Of one he asked, “What are you doing?” to which he replied, “I am working on this loose mortar.” To another he inquired “What are you working on?” and received the reply, “I am replacing some old wiring.” His Eminence came upon a third man of whom he asked the same question, but this man’s response was different: “I am working to restore God’s Grand Cathedral and one day I will bring my son and perhaps someday maybe my grandchildren to show them what we have done here.” Here is an answer of a man who takes great pride in his work.

In San Diego, we share that same type of civic pride with our arts communities. We have come a long way in the past 100 years since John D. Spreckels gave the city his magnificent gift of the organ named for him in Balboa Park and, along with Alozo Horton, opened two of the grand theatres in the growing downtown area.

Today, San Diego is home to some of the finest performing arts companies in the nation. FINE Magazine often writes about the Old Globe, our Symphony and our Opera of which we are so proud; we write about the world premieres that are launched here and go off to Broadway, such as the two recently presented by the La Jolla Playhouse.

There are less than a hand full of companies that have multi– million dollar budgets to produce these annual seasons that allow us this civic pride on a national level. The talent to achieve this must come from somewhere and much of it comes from right here in our own backyard. Across our county, many of our smaller companies are where that talent is developed. San Diego is indeed a hot bed of talent and you don’t have to look very far to find it.

The North Coast Rep is in its 34th season and going strong. The San Diego Rep just turned 40 and has outgrown an old church on

6th Ave. and grown into its Gaslamp headquarters with three stages.

The number of successful companies can’t be counted on both hands.

Cygent started in 2003 in a shoebox–sized space and by 2008 had moved into the Old Town Theatre (the very space where I produced my first production in 1985). The San Diego Musical Theatre just this season has moved in to the Speckels on Broadway. Up the hill from there you can find the Ion, Moxie and Digital Jungle.

North County is home to the Moonlight Theatre in Vista. The Lawrence Welk Theatre already has 12 productions on the schedule for the 2016 calendar. The California Center for the Performing Arts in Escondido also has a stacked season lined up throughout the upcoming year and San Diego’s newest company, the Sapphire Theatre, just closed their first successful production and already has two more shows booked.

If there is a model of how a theatre company is founded and gains national respect, look no further than The Lamb’s Players Theatre, which was founded in 1972 by Steve and Else Terrell, Herbie and Bernelle Hansen, and Bernie and Nancy Boyd. Their first space was a refurbished machine shop in El Cajon while the troupe rehearsed in the front yard and built the sets in the backyard of the Terrell’s home in National City.

In 1978 they moved into a church in National City that served them for the next 16 years until they took over the historic Spreckels Building in Coronado, their current space. In 2008, they added a 2nd stage at the Horton Grand Theatre in the Gaslamp, where it seems like their very popular production of the 80’s tribute Mixtape will play forever. Today, the Lamb’s Players have a Board of Directors with an annual budget of $4 million. Their productions attract more than 100,000 patrons a year and they rank in the top 50 theatre companies in the nation.

All of this shows that San Diego has become a cultured, sophisticated city in our nation with a very healthy appetite for the arts. We are certainly not shy about going out to support our emerging troupes across the county. And that, my friends, is civic pride at its finest.
