The Del Mar Racing season opens shortly, and what remains a 21 year constant is... Carol Bader Design, founder of Del Mar Hat Co. With pieces that appear on the podium or winners circles at Royal Ascot, Kentucky Derby, Del Mar, Saratoga, Breeders Cup and Melbourne Cup, Carol Bader creates distinct and unparalleled pieces of art one by one. Passionate about the equestrian world and her love for design, it’s only natural that she combine both obsessions into a successful millinery business that caters to high-end clients looking for the perfect chapeau. Though Carol Bader Design specializes in couture millinery, this premier San Diego designer also creates unique accessories perfect for men and women, as is evident by her two year brand extension of Equus.style. With a chic and “always homage” vibe, Carol Bader

Design offers one-of-a-kind statement pieces—and these pieces are the true definition of couture. No replicas or recreations are ever made until well after the client has debuted Bader’s pieces. Says Bader, “My job is to enhance [my clients] and let them debut the couture pieces… in this case, it’s not me, me, me; it’s them, them, them.” Available in stores throughout the country, Carol Bader Design is primarily housed at the renowned Del Mar Hat Co. Also owned and operated by Carol Bader, the Del Mar Hat Co. has offered over 21 years of stunning hats and now dresses, specialty jewelry, equine art and yes, hats. The Del Mar Hat Co. is the only place in the country that offers private showings and

Conveniences Signature Camping Takes the “Rough” Out of Roughing It By Keith Turner If you’re one of those people who think that “roughing it” constitutes carrying your own luggage or room service ending at 11 pm, then chances are you haven’t spent much time taking in the awe-inspiring natural beauty of our nation’s 100-year-old National Park system. While the thought of sleeping on hard ground, eating burnt hot dogs and going a week without a shower may seem appealing to some hardy earthlings, some of us find it repugnant to go without basic necessities for even an hour, let alone an entire vacation. (cont. on p.32)

The hot sun and hard ground get a lot more bearable with REI Signature Camping.

(cont. from p.30)

That’s why REI Adventures recently developed a program designed to take the hassle and headache out of your opportunity to commune with nature; it’s called REI Signature Camping. The service was designed to cater to first-time campers and those who simply want to experience nature’s wonders without the stress and strain that is typically associated with wilderness camping. Featuring fully appointed deluxe campsites that are outfitted with the best gear, the Signature Campsites are brimming with many of the comforts of home, including spacious tents with comfy furniture, hot showers, flush toilets and all the amenities you’d expect from REI. Best of all, each Signature Camping experience comes with its own staff of trail guides and a host who prepares mouthwatering meals and tasty treats daily throughout the trip. With locations in up to nine national parks (including Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Bryce and Zion, the Rocky Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains), Signature Camping professionals do all of the set-up, meal prep and daily maintenance of a campsite, allowing their guests to relax and enjoy the sites and experiences of the park. Trips typically run from four to six days with one nine day adventure that covers all five of Utah’s national parks. Each program includes up to 12 guests, two guides and a campsite host who is there to welcome guests back from their daily excursions.

Clockwise from top right: Spacious tents and comfy furniture await campers; guides like Tim Dice introduce families to the great outdoors; long days of hiking make for great nights of rest at an REI Signature site.

Tim Dice, one of REI’s top Signature Camping guides, explains that the goal of the program is to introduce camping to those who aren’t familiar with the great outdoors. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to experience the outdoors,” Dice explains. “A lot of novices come and say ‘I’ve always wanted to go camping, but it seemed impossible to do on my own.’ They can learn about the equipment and gear we use, and many decide that’s their own entry into the experience. Others say ‘This is awesome, there’s no reason for me to invest in my own gear because you guys have it all here for me.’” Founded in 2013, the Signature Camping program takes guests to a private campsite in or near a national park that is designed specifically for the group of “Clampers.” “We’ve tried to put together a collection of programs that serve the most iconic adventure destinations in the country in the National Park System that offer the kind of access that is hard to retrieve on your own,” explains Justin Wood, operations manager for REI Adventures. “In some cases, we have a dedicated spot that is private land that we set up and we create a private site for the duration [of their trip]. In others, we use existing park infrastructure but we’ve… set up a real deluxe signature camp there while the group is out hiking and enjoying the destination. We take a lot of the time and energy that a lot of campers would spend establishing the camp and we’ll take care of that for them and take it to a level (cont. on p.34)

that they’ve never seen before.” What makes Signature Camping different? Tent Setup: Spacious and deluxe tents fully outfitted with cots, sleeping pads, floor coverings, lighting and an assortment of camp furniture and extras. Dining: Gourmet meals featuring local ingredients and regional cuisine, freshly-prepared onsite and enjoyed in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere with delightful finishing touches. Bath Setup: Bathrooms with running water, showers and flush toilets where available, or provided personal hygiene kits and access to campground bathroom facilities when not. Evenings: Campfire and outdoor lounge area featuring state-of-the-art camp furniture, outdoor games and lots of friendly conversation. Wood explains that the goal of the program is to open up the world of camping to those who would not normally consider it. “Camping isn’t necessarily something that you would do just because you want to save some money on a vacation,” he says. “Camping is a way of experiencing the outdoors. It puts you closer to nature, it immerses you in the resource, the landscape and everything that is special about it. This program gives people a way to access that special experience of camping in a national park, but it does that in a way that takes out all the hassle and the stress by making sure that you are going to have access to hot showers and someone

cooking you three amazing meals a day.” While the camping programs are open to groups of all ages, the camping guides are experts at creating adventures for families. “The family adventures are really fun, I love them,” says Dice. “It’s so great to see the kids come alive in the outdoors, and it really facilitates the parent reconnecting with the joys of childhood when you are in an outdoor setting. I watch the years drop away as the adults are out there playing and giggling—it’s really a rewarding experience.” Dice recalls one woman who reported that she enjoyed the freedom of being able to play with her children without having to worry about cooking meals. “We had a mother who wrote us to say that she had forgotten what it’s like to be in a place with her family where someone else just took care of the cooking and everything,” he says. “She said it was so special to be out there enjoying it all together.” Signature Camping programs range in price from about $1,000 per person for a long weekend to $2,000 for a weeklong program, including ground transportation, food, park permits, camping equipment and guides. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the National Park Service, REI Adventures is donating 10 percent of the cost of each trip to support the National Parks Foundation. Hike the trail from the coast in Del Mar to the crest of Volcan Mountain.

Take a Hike

Discovering the Coast to Crest Trail By Delle Willett and Allison Keltner

In San Diego, we know a thing or two about hiking; we’ve all spent countless hours trekking the dusty paths and beachside cliffs. Once completed, the new Coast to Crest Trail will be the backbone of the San Dieguito River Park. Currently, you can hike along 45 miles of the planned 70–mile trail, which meanders from Del Mar (the Coast) to the summit of Volcan Mountain (the Crest), just north of Julian. The completed segments are popular with hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians, and they offer a unique opportunity to either encounter nature right in your own backyard or to journey into more rural, backcountry regions in San Diego County. If to you “hiking” means driving out to a remote trailhead, outfitting yourself in heavy hiking boots and a bulky backpack and climbing up a steep trail, you might be surprised by what you find in the San Dieguito River Park. Its trails range from short and flat to long and strenuous. There are accessible trailheads in Del Mar, the Del Dios Gorge, Lake Hodges and the San Pasqual Valley. As the trail ventures east, the trailheads and surroundings get more remote and rugged, but they are still a quick drive from North County. San Diego County has wonderfully rich biodiversity, and the Coast to Crest Trail gives you a chance to experience the region’s native wildlife and varied habitats. Since 2010, over 200 different bird species have been spotted at the San Dieguito Lagoon alone! Lake Hodges is also a popular “rest stop” for migrating birds, giving birdwatchers many chances

throughout the year to see rare species. Here are some other highlights along the trail: Stops along Lake Hodges, Bernardo Bay or San Pasqual Valley are not complete without a visit to the Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead. Located at the Sunset Drive staging area in Escondido, the 1870 adobe is one of the oldest structures in San Diego County and is a California state point of historical interest. Nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike will enjoy the nearby Bernardo Town Site and Mule Hill Battlefield, as well as Sikes Adobe’s own “living museum.” Called Rattlesnake Viewpoint because native rocks were used to create a rattlesnake-shaped seating area and viewpoint, this spot is situated directly on the Coast to Crest Trail just west of the Lake Hodges Dam. It offers sweeping vistas of Del Dios Gorge and an up-close view of the dam architecture. With interpretive panels, sculptures and other objects of interest, Rattlesnake Viewpoint is a perfect hiking destination from either the Santa Fe Valley or Rancho Drive staging areas. Spanning Lake Hodges just west of I–15, the David Kreitzer Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge is the world’s longest stressedribbon bridge, which provides convenient access between the North Shore and Bernardo Bay sections of Lake Hodges. An

Located directly off the Coast to Crest Trail, Raptor Ridge provides an ideal view of the San Pasqual Valley, appealing to hikers as well as to the valley’s eagles, hawks, vultures and falcons—often seen flying startlingly low overhead. Cyclists experience the thrill of downhill speed on the single-track segments of this trail. Raptor Ridge and similar, nearby cliffs provide shade for this legendary agricultural region. The 3,600 acres of the Santa Ysabel Preserves are surrounded by oak woodlands, native grasslands and fields of wildflowers that portray a beautiful natural setting during your hiking, biking and riding adventures. More than 13 miles of multi-use trails wind through the various habitats in this scenic mountain preserve, with the Santa Ysabel creek running along the reserve’s entire northern boundary. Volcan Summit marks the eastern terminus of the Coast to Crest Trail. The mountain was created by volcanic upthrust along the San Andreas Fault and provides breathtaking views of the San Dieguito watershed on one side and the Anza-Borrego desert on the other. Home to over 30 plant communities, 45 mammal species and 150 types of birds, Volcan Mountain is nature at its most magnificent. You can support the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy in its mission to complete the Coast to Crest Trail: become a member for $35 a year, volunteer at a work party or attend any of their guided hikes and other events hosted in the River Park. Tickets for their annual River Valley Fest will be on sale soon; this gala is a great way to learn about the Conservancy and its work.

Fun in the Sun Your Complete Guide to Sunscreen By Juliet Saunders

It’s about that time: summer! While summer is fun for a multitude of reasons—new nail polish colors, cute Havana hats, a casual wardrobe—it’s also time to start taking your skincare routine seriously. Wearing sunscreen every day is the most important beauty routine to stick to during the summer.

What to Look for in Your Sunscreen

When it comes to sunscreen, there are a few main kinds.

Physical Sunscreens

Chemical Sunscreens

Chemical sunscreens are the typical sunscreens you find in the drugstores and are usually the first thing you reach for. What makes it a chemical sunscreen? The most common main ingredients in chemical sunscreens are usually Oxybenzone, Octinoxate and other hard-to-pronounce ingredients along these lines. Chemical sunscreens can help protect your skin against the sun but do not provide an actual barrier between the UV rays and your skin, allowing some rays through. That’s why it’s necessary to get a higher SPF and reapply every 60–90 minutes. Spray sunscreen or sunscreen lotion? There are tons of different kinds of chemical sunscreens, like lotions and sprays with names like “sport” or “sheer.” What kind of sunscreen you use depends on your skin type. The sheer sunscreens might be too light for you; the sport sunscreens might 40

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

be too heavy, causing you to actually sweat more. Usually sprays are better for people who apply sunscreen correctly and often. But for the rest of us, sprays may miss spots since you can’t see exactly where the sunscreen has been applied. Sunscreen rules: Apply at least 30 minutes prior to sun exposure. Do not apply on top of moisturizers; sunscreen should be the very first thing you apply to your skin. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen that will protect against both kinds of UV rays: UVA and UVB. Another way to make sure the sunscreen you are buying is the best is to make sure it is recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation, which will be noted on the bottle. Suggestions: Spray: Coola Sport Continuous Spray SPF 30, $32 at Sephora. Lotion: Banana Boat Sport Performance Lotion SPF 30, $6.50 at drugstores.

Physical sunscreens are less common than chemical sunscreens. What makes it a physical sunscreen? Two main ingredients, Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, characterize physical sunscreens. Pure Zinc is thought to be the most effective form of sun protection—think pure white lotion that does not rub sheerly onto your skin. These should be the only two main and active ingredients in your physical sunscreen in order for it to be characterized as a true physical sunscreen. These ingredients provide an actual barrier between your skin and the UV rays. This means that if applied correctly, your skin is completely protected from skin-damaging and sunburn-causing UVA and UVB rays. Spray sunscreen or sunscreen lotion? Finding a physical sunscreen in spray form is pretty hard, but they do exist. These sunscreens tend to be thicker and don’t easily disappear on skin like their chemical counterparts, which is why physical sunscreens most commonly come in lotion form. You’ll often see physical sunscreens described as “mineral sunscreens” too. Sunscreen rules: Just like chemical sunscreens, these physical sunscreens should be applied at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied often. Suggestions: Spray: Bare Republic Mineral Sport Sunscreen Body Spray SPF 30, $14.99 at Target. Lotion: Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Broad Spectrum SPF 60, $10–$15 at drugstores. (Before I discovered my favorite brand of physical sunscreen, I used baby sunscreen because it always comes in a very high SPF!)

What About Those Lips?

Don’t Forget Your Face!

When it comes to sunscreen, your face is just as important as the rest of your body. The face can show signs of sun damage faster than anywhere else. Chemical or Physical? It’s up to you to decide what kind of coverage your face needs. However, if you’re going with a chemical sunscreen, make sure that the SPF is at least 30 and broad spectrum, plus check to make sure the bottle reads “non-comedogenic” so it won’t clog your pores or do more damage to your skin. Sunscreen Rules: Apply at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and make sure to reapply to your nose most often. If you’re wearing makeup with sunscreen in it, make sure to wear sunglasses and a hat to protect your face! Suggestions: Chemical: DR. Jart+ Every Day Sun Fluid Broad Spectrum SPF 30, $34 at Sephora. Physical: MD Solar Sciences Mineral Crème Broad Spectrum SPF UVA-UVB Sunscreen, $30 at mdsolarsciences.com. Also comes with tinted options.

Our lips are probably the number one most overlooked area when it comes to sunscreen—most likely because nobody wants to slather their lips in white goo. Fortunately there are chapsticks and lip balms with sunscreen! Chemical or Physical? There are not many physical sunscreens out there—but chemical ones can do the job just as well. Sunscreen Rules: Apply as often as possible: every few minutes, after every drink and after every meal. This is the place where the sunscreen will wear off the fastest, so you have to be diligent with application! Suggestions: Chemical: Supergoop! Acai Fusion Lip Balm Broad Spectrum SPF 30, $9.50 at Sephora. Physical: Juice Beauty SPF 8 Lip Moisturizers, $10 at juicebeauty.com. Comes in a variety of colors.

icture your dream home. Maybe it’s a two story house with a private wine cellar situated in the rolling hills of Poway, or it’s a beach-front property with a terrace overlooking the sea. Your dream home could be situated in the center of a bustling metropolis or nestled away in a quiet part of town. Perhaps you crave hardwood floors and brilliant overhead lighting, or maybe you want plush carpeting and a dim, romantic atmosphere. You deserve your dream dwelling, and Holly Nanula of Engel and Völkers can help you find it. Originally an educator and public school administrator, Nanula eventually joined the real estate industry. A master of the art of multitasking, Nanula triumphed in owning three prestigious real estate offices operating under the Holly Nanula Group, formed in 2012 and still active today. Having earned its position in California’s upper echelon of highly respected real estate professionals, the Holly Nanula Group currently specializes in the sale and purchase of homes and estates in Poway, La Jolla, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Point Loma and Rancho Bernardo. It’s no surprise that Nanula found success in the real estate business; Nanula comes from a family of homebuilders who own and operate Essex Homes, a premier regional residential building company located in Buffalo, New York. Upon moving to San Diego with her husband and three children, Nanula dived into the Southern California residential real estate business. It was almost inevitable that Nanula enter this industry; the rewards of working closely with clients and finding new homes makes Nanula swell with pride. “I love the gratification that comes from guiding sellers in the negotiation of their home,” Nanula tells us, “or from helping a buyer find the home of their dreams.” Beyond her passion for the world of residential real estate, Nanula has a strong foothold in the

philanthropic sphere, including ties to the Del Mar Village Association. Nanula personally believes in supporting the betterment of her community and giving back as a way to help San Diego prosper. Adding to her sense of community is Nanula’s strong faith and involvement in Maranatha Christian School, where her children are currently enrolled. Brimming with benevolence and strong community ties, it’s no wonder Nanula’s staunch motto is “the client comes first.” Hard-working and with high standards, she accepts nothing but the best from her business ventures—mainly for the sake of the client. “I aim for excellence in every aspect of the real estate transaction,” Nanula explains. “[I] want to make it as stress-free as possible for my client.” With an impressive number of high-end listings, Nanula has a lot to offer prospective clients. One perk of working with Nanula? Her flawless reputation for placing her clients’ needs and goals at the forefront of every transaction. Nanula strives to learn what really matters to her clients so she can better alleviate their buying or selling anxieties and deliver stellar results. Nanula also brings to the table negotiation abilities, management skills and an in-depth knowledge of the San Diego area’s neighborhoods and real estate market. With a combined 25 years of experience within the Holly Nanula Group, it’s clear they can provide a seamless journey through the current market. Given Nanula’s surplus of skill, experience and success, it’s no surprise that this entrepreneur continues to grow as a businesswoman. Her most recent transition was joining Engel and Völkers, a global real estate powerhouse that sells high-end homes throughout Europe, Asia and North America. To Holly Nanula, Engel and Völkers was the next logical step in her career. As of June 2016, Nanula is one of their esteemed agents. Though the brokerage firm is international, according to Nanula it doesn’t have an intimidating, corporate atmosphere. Instead, Engel and Völkers feels almost like a boutique.

“I want to make it as stress-free as possible for my client.”

“Engel and Völkers [has an] unparalleled devotion to serving the most discerning clients,” Nanula illustrates. “The firm built its business representing signature properties around the world. Despite its global reach, Engel and Völkers has retained a boutique culture. Agents collaborate and support each others’ listings.” Engel and Völkers gives Nanula room to shine because it offers one thing that she understands well: a luxury brand. Known for providing the crème de la crème of local homes, Engel and Völkers is the perfect fit for Nanula’s expertise.

“Engel and Völkers is about catering to the clients and making sure they have a first-class experience and transaction,” Nanula confirms. “The luxury brand they exude is where I’m more comfortable.” When you look at the properties Nanula currently has listed, it’s easy to see why she reigns supreme at selling luxury real estate. These multimillion dollar homes, dripping with opulence, are located in the most coveted neighborhoods in San Diego. Nanula’s star listing, however, has to be 5910 Camino de la Costa. Located on a bluff in La Jolla, this home is

simultaneously a warm and comfortable living space and an artistic masterpiece. The breathtaking ocean views—with over one hundred feet of oceanfront visible—are just the beginning of this gorgeous property; the home offers five bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms. Boasting 7,500 square feet and a towering 14 foot ceiling from the main floor, this home is aweinspiring and is currently listed for $16,995,000. Designed to seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living, each room of the home allows for breathtaking views that—on a clear day—stretch down to Mexico. Situated on what is colloquially referred to as the “street of dreams,” the Camino de la Costa property has both historic charm and modern amenities. The property was originally built in 1959 and has undergone various changes over the last fifty years. The Camino De La Costa property was purchased in December 2013 by American Coastal Properties, a premier provider of single and multifamily homes, specifically in coastal Southern California. The company’s President & CEO, Nick Sinatra, spearheaded a substantial two and a half year redevelopment of the property focusing on maximizing land value through improvements and redesign. Though not considered a new home, the property has recently undergone a substantial remodel. Expertly rebuilt by PBS Construction and designed by acclaimed project designer Marengo Morton Architects, the home now features new facilities and details perfect for even the most discerning buyer. If you think the remodel was easy—a dash of paint here, a new light fixture there—you’d be wrong. It took a long time to revitalize this home; according to Claude Anthony Marengo of Marengo Morton Architects, “to ready the home for construction took six months, and [it took] about a year to build.” This is because the Camino de la Costa property underwent major structural changes, including moving the pool out of the front yard and putting a jacuzzi with a glass wind screen on the entertainment side of the home. The basement was turned into a wine cellar, bar and entertainment room. Other changes made by the architects on the project include raising the ceilings, dropping the basement floor and putting in more windows on the eastern side of the house to allow for better natural morning light and a mountain view.

“Chic, modern and irresistible features are what make this home so unique.” 44

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

According to project designer Marengo, these changes were absolutely necessary. When he first stepped foot on the property, Marengo says the home “had a very shut-down feel to it. Our inspiration was to bring the outside in as much as possible, to get the feel of the ocean being inside the property.” Who can blame them? The astounding ocean view is one of the best parts of the home, and both Marengo and Nanula used the sea as inspiration moving forward with the design. This inspiration was then shared with Sandra Vila of Sandra Vila Design House, who completed the interior design makeover of the property. The 15 year old boutique custom design firm is known for being creative, and Vila enjoyed the challenge of regenerating this home. “It was incredible to be given a blank canvas,” Vila says. With the ocean as her guiding force, Vila aimed for something modern but approachable, something with European flair, something that juxtaposed old world materials with modern elements. Using an ocean-inspired color palette, Vila found herself leaning towards natural stones like marble and limestone, gold coloring throughout and white-washed woods like bamboo and walnut. The color scheme pervades throughout the house, and to its benefit. “Every room relates to the other, so it’s very cohesive,” Vila confirms. It’s a home perfect for the modern day and age—elegant and refined, but an amazing place for entertainment. And the home doesn’t just look cool—it actually is cool. Admits Nanula, “The latest advances in technology power every element of the home, from lighting to entertainment, to motorized sliding doors, all off your phone or tablet.” Chic, modern and irresistible features are what make this home so unique. And through it all, Holly Nanula kept a discerning eye on the project, guiding it towards the future and what would be most valuable to any potential buyer. States Nanula, “I worked with the architect and designer regarding a host of items selected, including flooring, wall treatments, lighting and finished fixtures.” Everything was chosen with a potential homeowner in mind, allowing the property to transform from a shut-down distant memory to a shining star on the Street of Dreams. By designing Camino de la Costa for utility, Nanula and her team were able to add functional details. The pièce de résistance? “The master bedroom suite is absolutely amazing,” Nanula says with pride. “The bedroom has an intoxicating ocean view, the bathroom is divine and the master closet is large and luxurious, including built-ins throughout. [It’s] every woman’s dream closet.” There’s that word again: dream. It’s something Holly Nanula and her team specialize in. With laser-sharp focus on the client and their individual dreams, Nanula takes the stressful process of buying or selling a home and turns it into a personalized affair. Says Nanula, “[I find] out what my clients’ needs and wants are, whether it be schools, environments or just getting to know their lifestyle… and what works for them.” Nanula works tirelessly to find lavish homes in your budget that meet all of your criteria—no matter your dream!

L

isted as the third healthiest and most fit city in America, it’s no surprise that, combined with our amazing weather and fun-loving sense of community, we love our social sports. Whether you’re looking for a new outlet for meeting people or a way to stay fit outside of the gym, there are plenty of options in San Diego County to fit every age and demographic. For those of us who have been here long enough, we can remember when VAVi was nothing more than a small rookie sports league put together by local Tyler Jensen back in 2002. Since then, the sport and social club has grown to over 85,000 members with over 30 sport options. It’s now a fully-recognized and awarded organization that is the epicenter of social club leagues in San Diego. Geared toward folks in their twenties and thirties, options include basketball, bowling, boxing (regular and kick), dance (tango, salsa, swing, hip-hop and belly dancing), dodgeball, flag football, golf, hiking, kickball, kayaking, running, soccer, softball, surfing, tennis, triathlon club, volleyball (both beach and indoor)—and the list just continues to grow. More fitness-oriented options include beach boot camp, cardio pole dancing and cardio strip tease. VAVi offers an incredible variety of options to choose from for those who like diversity and a large network. You probably know that local pubs, bars and restaurants partner with VAVi to host the social events they provide for their players, but the organization has grown to the point of partnering with giants like Petco Park to host their own events, sections and special offers. Additional player perks include Miller Lite specials for winning teams at participating bars, half-price bottles of wine for all VAVi members at The Catamaran Resort and even medical advantages, like special access in the sports medicine department of the UCSD Health System. VAVi is admittedly massive, prompting a portion of the community to look elsewhere for a league with a narrower focus. Started even before VAVi in 1998 in Washington D.C., WAKA Kickball & Social Sports covers the entire country and also offers a selection of other sports, but their variety is more streamlined and their focus remains on kickball.

With a more philanthropic core than other sports league, WAKA teams are encouraged to participate in both local and national charities. WAKA also knows how to have fun, hosting costume theme weeks, league parties, charity events and group vacations. And if you’re a diehard fan, join 3,000 kickballers in Las Vegas annually to compete in The Founders Cup World Kickball Championship. If being social, a sense of community and camaraderie are the things that really get your engine revving, the Irish community may be your surprising new home. Hurling, Camogie and Gaelic Football are all popular Irish sports, centuries old and important pieces of Irish heritage. If you decide to play locally, you may also get a new pen pal: players from Ireland frequently come to the States on J1 visas to join our teams. Hurling and Camogie (the female version of Hurling) are described by the St. Peter’s Hurling Club of San Diego as a stick-and-ball sports that incorporate elements of lacrosse, baseball, ice hockey, field hockey, soccer, rugby and football. In this sport, team members run up and down the field body-checking each other as they try to score. Gaelic football is similar, but it’s played with a larger ball and incorporates elements of soccer, volleyball, basketball, football and rugby. The St. Peter’s Hurling Club of San Diego offers hurling for men and Setanta Gaelic Football & Surf Club for men who would like to play gaelic football outside of a pub league. While not a requirement to participate, these sports involve travel that could take you and your teammates around the country and even to Ireland itself. Na Fianna offers a Gaelic Football pub league that is great for those looking for the camaraderie without the travel, gender-specific teams or physical aspects of body-checking. Coed pub leagues are more light-hearted, don’t require as much of a commitment and include post-game Irish pub culture. These organizations give plenty of options for those in their twenties and thirties, but what about those of us on the higher end of that scale? Meetup provides unlimited options in local sports as well

as age demographics. The site is especially helpful for those who want to play alongside peers with the same age-related physical abilities and cultural commonalities. Once you’re logged into the main page of Meetup, search for groups by location and keywords. It may take a glass of wine and an hour of searching the site to really hone in what you’re looking for, but there’s likely to be something tailored to your specific desires. Those of us who are fabulous over forty aren’t the only ones finding challenges in the area of social sports. We’ve come a long way in the world of gender equality, but competitive sports can still be a bit of a boy’s club. It’s particularly difficult for ladies to find something with a little more physical contact, gumption and personality. If that sounds like you, check out The San Diego Derby Dolls. A display of grit in fantastic and fierce skates is given by these gals as they roller-skate around a circular track playing both offense and defense in order to both protect

their own jammer and block that of the other team. A jammer—as you’re likely wondering—is a designated member of each team whose duty it is to lap the other team for points. If you’re ready to lace up and give it a try, the Derby Dolls have adult orientations and a free trial monthly.

The Best Burger and Brewery Pairings Across San Diego By Emily Glaser It’s summertime, and the living is easy. It may seem like a cliché but the old adage rings true, especially in San Diego, where that perpetual sunshine gets us outside in these crisp, dry months. When it heats up and hunger strikes, there’s only one solution. It’s not a complex cocktail, and it’s certainly not a plated meal with clumsy utensils. The solution, like most things in these summer months, is simple: a burger in one hand and an icy-cold brew in the other. There’s a lot to be said for a backyard bash with burgers and brews, but again, we like to keep it simple this season—that means no cooking and no clean-up. And why stay cooped up at home when there are so many beautiful neighborhoods, a bevy of breweries and a bounty of burger joints to explore? (cont. on p.64)

Learn a lesson in science (and beer) at Wavelength, then head to Chili Coast Burgers for a greasy classic.

Wavelength Brewing Company and Chili Coast Burgers Vista may not be your first choice when it comes to summertime destinations, but it shouldn’t be your last, either. The tiny town has a lot going on these days, including the scientifically-superior Wavelength Brewing Co. Head brewer James Petti (known for his work with Karl Strauss) teamed up with home brewer Hans Haas back in 2014 to start Wavelength Brewing. They boast some serious brews, including a Czech Golden Ale and an Orange Wheat perfect for the summer season, but what really sets Wavelength apart is their endearing yet dorky devotion to science. The brewery frequently hosts speakers whose IQs outshine the best of us. From astrophysicists to chemists, these special guests give lighthearted lectures over those tasty beers. Once you’ve indulged in a little learning and a couple of brews, head to our favorite greasy burger joint, Chili Coast Burgers. Tucked away in an innocuous shopping center, Chili Coast Burgers certainly isn’t glamorous—but burgers aren’t supposed to be, are they? Go all out and order a Hockey Burger, a greasy patty topped with chili (of course) and sliced hot dogs. Finish with a side of crispy onion rings and your cravings will surely be satisfied. JACK LUNGU

T

his summer, head to one of these hidden ‘hoods for our burgers and brews scavenger hunt. We found our favorite neighborhoods’ best burgers and paired them with a nearby brewery for a full day of fun in (and out) of the sun. Explore the alleys and byways of a new neighborhood, cool off with a fresh and local brew then top it off with a juicy cheeseburger. It’s summertime, and satisfying your cravings just got easier.

Stone Brewing Tap Room and Hodad’s Is there anything more iconically San Diego than a freshly-brewed pint of Stone? If there is, it’s surely a Hodad’s burger. Combine the two in the Gaslamp Quarter, and you’ve got the local trifecta. Hodad’s is an O.B. mainstay, but their location Downtown, which opened in 2011, is just as quintessentially classic. Grab a Guido Burger, inspired by Guy Fieri (who favored the restaurant on his San Diego visit back in 2007), with pastrami, ketchup, pickles, swiss cheese, grilled onions and spicy brown mustard. Chow down, and then take to the streets Downtown for some serious people-watching (might we suggest making this pilgrimage during Comi-Con?). When thirst strikes, pop into Downtown’s extension of our most famous brewery at the Stone

Brewing Tap Room. It might be a smaller version of the other Stone locations, but the flavors are all here: 16 rotating taps give you access to special releases, collaborations and even unique casks. Sling back a pint before hitting the streets again.

Pair two Gaslamp staples with a Hodad’s burger and a Stone brew.

Smashburger and Vigilante Brewing Del Mar has long been a destination for tourists, surfers and foodies, but beer connoisseurs have long been left lacking when it comes to the seaside city— until this summer. Vigilante Brewing is opening this season and promises to bring a crop of fresh and fun brews to one of San Diego’s favorite neighborhoods. Vigilante will steer away from the heavy, hoppy beers of the past few years, offering instead flavorful and drinkable options perfect for summer. Once you’ve quenched your thirst, head to the Del Mar Plaza for the best of burgers from the famed chain Smashburger. Although it’s certainly not unique to San Diego, Smashburger does offer culinary creations crafted specifically for their locations. In Del Mar, that means the San Diego Burger with chipotle mayo, lettuce, tomato, avocado, cilantro, sour cream, red onion, pepper jack cheese and a big ol’ patty. Burn off those calories with a stroll around the Del Mar Plaza—some of the best shopping in town.

Opening this summer, Vigilante Brewing pairs perfectly with Smashburger.

Crazee Burger and Belching Beaver

Decadent beer floats and insane sandwiches make Belching Beaver and Crazee Burger can’t miss joints.

North Park may be known for its hipsters and hideouts, but there’s a burgeoning beer scene in the neighborhood that we can’t ignore. There are plenty of micro-breweries to choose from in this hip ‘hood, but none is tastier than Belching Beaver. On a hot summer day, Belching Beaver has the perfect solution: beer floats. Decadent ice cream concoctions paired with their famous beers are sure to please any palette (peanut butter stout with chocolate ice cream? yes please!). If you’re still hungry after your chilly treat, walk around the block to Crazee Burger, a San Diego icon. They don’t call ‘em “crazee” for nothing; here you’ll find some of the most delicious, off-the-wall burgers in San Diego. For a funky twist, try the Muddy Pig, a burger with Nutella, crispy bacon and caramelized plantains. Crazee Burger also offers exotic meats, including gator, ostrich, camel and elk, so there are endless options for adventurous eaters. No matter your neighborhood, burger preferences or beer bias, there’s certainly a perfect pairing waiting for you. Take to the streets with an appetite and this guide in hand, and you’ll fill your belly with burgers and brews!

TEMPT YOUR TASTE BUDS OH! Juice Brings a New Taste to San Diego

Visit the OH! Juice tasting room in Carlsbad to try every flavor.

By Rebeccah Zuazua

F

or lucky San Diegans, our favorite city has a new one-stop shop for delicious and nutritious juice. Earlier this year, OH! Juice opened their Tasting Room in Carlsbad, a unique twist on one of our favorite healthy lifestyle habits. Founded by Hanna Gregor, the juices range in flavor from sweet and chocolatey, such as Cacao Pow, to green and vibrant, like Fiji Fusion. Both glutenfree and dairy-free, this innovative company offers beverages at a low price per ounce with a high amount of nutrition and quality. Before OH! Juice came to fruition, founder Hanna Gregor was a nutrition coach who worked with approximately ten clients each week. She would coach her clients on efficient grocery shopping and how to create the best smoothies for their diets. Once she realized she couldn’t keep up with the demand, Gregor decided to expand her business and promote health on a bigger scale. “OH! Juice is really an outlet to be able to handcraft and produce

a high-quality product on a bigger scale for the community,” says Gregor. Her interest in nutrition and health began at a young age, and she had always enjoyed making juice for family and friends, then her clients. Now, Gregor has turned OH! Juice into a healthy staple for San Diego. And why shouldn’t it be? Juice is a nutritious, natural and simple way to revitalize your body. One specific way juice can change your life is through a juice cleanse. OH! Juice cleanses are designed to eliminate unhealthy additives and unwanted toxins to help you begin a journey towards a healthier lifestyle. Each bottle contains around two to three pounds of raw, coldpressed produce. Nut mylks are often used to replace desserts, and green juices fill your recommended vegetables for the day. Not only are OH! juices organic, they are also cold-pressed. This means that, although the juices are more expensive than comparable or big brand-name products, OH! juices have (cont. on p.68)

significantly more nutritional value because the juice is not extracted with heat. The juice is a raw product, which means it remains in its exact state after being bottled—it’s never altered to extend the shelf life. To prep for a juice cleanse, or to have a tasty treat, OH! Juice’s new Carlsbad Tasting Room is a must. In a normal tasting, you won’t have to spend a cent. Sit down at the juice bar and chat with juice consultants. These consultants will learn your health goals and pour juices just for you. If you have time, sit for a full tasting, but don’t be shy! If you’re in a hurry and know exactly what you want or like, you can quickly purchase the juices you want for around $10 to $12 each. But a full tasting is ideal, as you can go through every juice, determine what you like and even purchase juice to take home. OH! Juice lets you try different blends without any financial pressure to purchase. OH! Juice is a certified organic company with 90% of its ingredients hailing from over 50 local farms. As a way to make good on their promise of freshness, they strive to sell out of their fresh juice within the last three hours of every day, thus keeping only fresh juices on their shelves. “Everything is made fresh, every single day, in every single variety,” founder Hanna Gregor confirms. Unfortunately, that means OH! Juice may sell out of your favorite blend, but the company has an ingenious solution: they allow customers to pre-order their juices online to ensure they have the right amount and type of ingredients delivered daily. OH! Juice prides itself on being eco-friendly. Each juice is poured into a glass bottle, which makes it easier to reuse and reduces the amount of plastic the company uses daily. Better still, they also dump their compost on their local farms to help grow more produce. Although OH! Juice has plans to expand in the future, their main goal is to continue to focus on their customers and their overall health. Unlike companies who mass produce, Gregor and company look out for their consumers by not cutting corners and investing in the best produce and machinery for their products. “If we cared about profit, we’d be in plastic bottles [and] we wouldn’t be certified organic,” adds Gregor. “We operate with high standards.” Stop in and take a sip—with juice this fresh and delicious, you’ll be saying “OH!” in no time!

CAMPFIRE CUISINE Delicious Dishes for the Outdoors By Deanna Smith

C

amping is one of the best ways to detox from the madness of our lives. There’s something about “roughing it” that rejuvenates our primal instincts and slows us down to a steady, cruising altitude. The key is in the preparation—put your sous chef skills to use! Prep meals at home in plastic containers; you can prepare everything from chopped veggies to steamed rice. A squeeze bottle is perfect for readymade pancake batter and will last for several days in a cooler. Precooking bacon or sausage saves time over the grill. Most importantly, don’t forget to prepare your campfire! Bring enough firewood to last at least four hours per night. Building a campfire is easier than you think, and once you accomplish that smoldering feat, it’s all too easy to enjoy an outdoor feast!

70

FINEsd.com • facebook.com/FINEmagazines

BUILDING THE BEST CAMPFIRE Scratch a 3 foot circle on the ground with a shovel, removing all dry brush and debris. Place melon-sized boulders on the edge of the circle. Fill in gaps with smaller stones. Create a tepee of kindling in the center of your fire pit. Build a tepee of about 6 firewood logs over the kindling. Light kindling with a long match at all corners under the tepee logs. Voila! Fire! After about 30 minutes, the flame will burn down to a medium heat perfect for grilling. On the inner edge of the pit, anchor the pole of your swivel grill. Be sure the anchor pole is at least 3 feet long

for a secure base. Add small pieces of firewood every so often, but let the flame burn down if you plan on more grilling. Keep fires small and under control at all times, and have a fire extinguisher handy, just in case. Extinguish your fire by drowning out all embers. If you don’t have water, mix in dirt until coals are cool to the touch. Once you have your fire, making delectable camping treats is a breeze! From brisket to beets, your grill can do it all. Not sure what to prepare? Here are some mouthwatering recipes to take with you into the wild.

A P P L E W O O D B A C O N B R AT S & POLISH DOGS Starting at one end of your link, spear a toothpick through the tip of your bacon strip into the top center of your sausage. Swirl bacon around the link, ending at the opposite end and connect with the toothpick. Repeat with the rest of your brats and Polish dogs. Over medium heat, grill dogs for about two minutes on each quarter turn. Pay extra attention to the bacon grease and char that will develop. Remove from heat and enjoy with grilled onions and honey mustard.

MEYER LEMON HERB HALIBUT I N PA R C H M E N T PA P E R Season both sides of a fresh skinless halibut fillet with olive oil, granulated garlic, parsley, sea salt and pepper. Top with thinly sliced Meyer lemons and a pat of butter. Place in the center of parchment paper; bring sides of parchment paper together at top center and fold down. Then, fold ends under the fillet. Repeat with foil to cover parchment paper—this will protect your halibut from burning. Grill on medium heat for six to eight minutes. Remove from heat, remove foil and let cool.

B A K E D P O TAT O E S , G R I L L E D S W E E T ONIONS AND CORN ON THE COB Wash, dry and pierce all sides of your large potato. Season with sea salt and pepper. Wrap in foil; set aside. Repeat procedure with your corn on the cob, then set aside. Peel off the onion’s first layers until you reach a tender layer. Place onion in the center of a square piece of foil. Slice onion into 8 wedges, leaving the base uncut, and sprinkle with sea salt, pepper and granulated garlic. Top with a pat of butter. Wrap the foil up and around the entire onion and close tightly at the top. Place the prepared potato and onion on grill for 50-60 minutes. Add the corn after 40 minutes, and grill for 20 minutes. All veggies will be ready at the same time.

S’MORES IN A CONE Super easy! Fill an ice cream sugar cone with mini marshmallows and chocolate chunks. Pack as many sugary treats in the cone as possible because the chocolate and the mallow will shrink with heat. Wrap the cone in foil and lay over a low heat grill for 2 minutes. Remove from heat, let cool, unwrap and devour!

La Jolla Playhouse Brings a Varied Repertoire in Their New Season

Located on the UCSD campus, La Jolla Playhouse brings Broadway-level performances to San Diego.

By Jess Yacovelle Where can you see a thrilling historical drama, a riotous comedy and a classic musical adapted for the stage all under one roof ? Known as one of the top theatres in San Diego, La Jolla Playhouse takes pride in presenting a wide variety of new shows each year to their devoted patrons, and the 2016–2017 season is no exception. La Jolla Playhouse has flourished creatively in the past ten years, producing hit show after hit show and sending multiple productions on to other theatres across the nation, including Broadway. Part of La Jolly Playhouse’s recent success is attributed to Christopher Ashley, the Playhouse’s artistic director since 2007. During his tenure, Ashley has overseen the production of several successful shows, including Memphis, which eventually went on to Broadway and won four Tony Awards, one of which was for Best Musical of 2010. Given the hefty resume he’s built in the last ten years, it’s almost surprising that Ashley had previously applied to be the artistic director of the Playhouse—and he didn’t get the job. “I’ve always wanted to run La Jolla Playhouse,” Ashley

confesses. “I applied to be the artistic director when I was in my late 20s—thank god they didn’t give it to me, I would never have been ready.” Ashley is certainly ready now; he painstakingly selects each production for the Playhouse to perform, hoping to make a lasting impression. It’s a goal that influences the productions he selects each season. Says Ashley, “[I want] to make the most vibrant conversation about the world around us that I can make.” While the bulk of his job centers around programing the season and overseeing La Jolla Playhouse’s productions, Ashley still finds time to direct throughout the year. Recently, Ashley served as the director for the current season’s opening production Hollywood—and he had a blast. “If you’re the artistic director, when you get a chance to direct at your own theatre, the entire staff takes extraordinary care of you,” Ashley laughs. “It’s a really fun place to direct, if you’re me! Hopefully it’s fun for other people to direct here too.” Whether or not it’s fun, one thing is certain: directing or writing for La Jolla Playhouse is a coveted position. Every (cont. on p.80)

year, the Playhouse draws big names from the world of theatre to their intimate space. Recipients of Tony Awards, Pulitzer Prizes and Outer Critics Circle Awards flock to La Jolla Playhouse to debut their new work. “We have a lot of award winners,” Ashley confirms with a modest chuckle. It’s easy to see why; with four performance spaces, a seasoned staff and a loyal local following, La Jolla Playhouse is easily one of the top regional theatres on the West Coast. With the beginning of their 2016–2017 season behind them, La Jolla Playhouse is looking to continue what Ashley calls their season of premieres. “Of our six plays on subscription, four of them are world premieres; two of them are second productions,” Ashley explains with pride. “So this is very much a year about new plays and musicals.” Currently stunning at La Jolla Playhouse is The Last Tiger in Haiti, a gripping drama written by up-and-coming playwright Jeff Augustin. The production details the story of young people in Haiti who essentially live as indentured servants. As Ashley details, “It’s an exploration of how storytelling gives form to our lives and community.” Though dramatic and dark, The Last Tiger in Haiti offers intricate storytelling and surprising moments. “There’s a big, unexpected twist when you come back for the second act,” Ashley teases. Following The Last Tiger in Haiti is Junk: The Golden Age of

Debt, which begins its previews on July 26th. Written by Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar, Junk is a thriller that tells the story of 1980s junk bonds and the utter chaos they caused. With rapid storytelling and tangible characters, Junk offers a detailed look at the precursor to our country’s financial collapse. Rounding out La Jolla Playhouse’s 2016–2017 season is comedy Tiger Style!, premiere musical Miss You Like Hell and comedic musical Freaky Friday. With a wide repertoire that stretches across a multitude of genres, La Jolla Playhouse offers their subscribers a unique and varied experience with every new show. “I love promising an audience that every time they walk through the door, they’re going to see something unexpected, fresh and unlike the things you’ve seen here before,” Ashley confirms. “Our main goal is that the shows you see at La Jolla Playhouse will leave you transformed in some way. The plays we’re the most excited about are the ones that are plugged into something happening in the world right now, that you walk out the door different than you walked in.” With something for everyone at this San Diego staple, it’s no wonder La Jolla Playhouse has been astonishing the theatre world for nearly 70 years. Don’t miss their latest production, The Last Tiger in Haiti, and upcoming premiere Junk: The Golden Age of Debt.

In Memory of... MUHAMMAD ALI 1942–2016

A By Bob Morey

GORDIE HOWE 1928–2016

s I was putting the wraps on this column and telling you what an awesome summer we’re having in San Diego, a breaking newsflash came out stating that the family of Muhammad Ali were gathering at a Phoenix medical facility where “The Greatest” was under observation. Hours later, his passing was announced. Love him or hate him, Ali was an illuminating figure for over 50 years throughout the world, right up until his passing. After winning the gold medal at the age of 18 in the 1960 Olympic Games, then winning the Heavyweight title by upsetting Sonny Liston just four years later, Ali became a source of pride for the African-American community. Two years after winning the Heavyweight title, Ali was stripped of his title for citing his religious beliefs in opposing America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Ali was charged and convicted of draft evasion; his conviction was later overturned by the Supreme Court, but it had cost him four peak years of his career. To this day, Ali is the only person to have won the Boxing Heavyweight title three times. His fights with George Foreman and Joe Frazier remain some of the greatest in boxing history. This is a man who lived his life against all odds and walked to the beat of his own drum. It has been said that Ali took around 29,000 blows to the head and body throughout his career; these blows are thought to be the leading cause of his Parkinson’s Disease that affected Ali throughout the later stages of his life. One of my fondest memories of Ali’s life outside of the ring was at the 1996 Olympic Games, where he carried the torch to light the arrow that was used to ignite the flame. As the behind the scenes story goes, Ali’s arm began to tremble while holding the torch during the transfer, and he burnt his arm in an effort to not drop it. Then, as I was finishing this revised column, news broke of the passing of “Mr. Hockey” Gordie Howe. Gordie Howe was the first player to score 1,000 career goals in the NHL, and he led the Detroit Red Wings to four Stanley Cups over the 25 years he played with the Michigan club. Gordie Howe had one of the longest careers in hockey history when he once again strapped on his skates at the age of 52 and played with his son for the Houston Aeros in WHA. Howe had one of the greatest careers in sports and was a legend in his own time. It’s not often we have two of sports’ greatest figures passing so close together. These are men that helped to redefine their respective sports as we know them today. These are the figures that all athletes strive to become and children dream about meeting one day. So here’s to keeping that dream alive and pursuing excellence even after the passing of Ali and Howe.
