A collaborative effort from award winning developer, Pelican Development, and eos architecture firm have once again created a masterpiece. This exquisite residence will captivate you from the moment you pull into the gated driveway. The exterior vernacular and interior aesthetic was inspired by a west coast look with a contemporary feel. The open floor plan with elegant spaces allow for interactive family living and entertaining. The oversized windows and high ceilings marry to bring the outside in with picture perfect views from every room. The timeless pool and custom raised spa are the centerpieces for the resort style private backyard. A kitchen such as this one speaks to those who can appreciate the perfect blend of classic sophistication and contemporary warmth. Organic custom elements such as mahogany, walnut, limestone & marble throughout create a luminous design that makes the most of the setting and highlights the architectural shape of the home. This home defies description; it is an experience not to be missed.

CELEBRITY PROFILE BY MiKhala HAILE PHOTOGRAPHY BY RIKER BROTHERS

& CENTER

Good First Impressions COMEDY, IMPERSONATIONS AND MORE WITH JONATHAN KITE Have you ever tried to impersonate your favorite celebrity? Mimic their voice, their mannerisms, their patterns of speech? For the average American, impressions are often a swing and a miss, something to laugh about with your friends, and then forget. For actor Jonathan Kite, however, impersonating other people and adopting different accents is just another part of his career. A Chicago native, Kite has guest starred on TV shows such as Wizards of Waverly Place, Raising Hope and American Dad. Since 2011, however, Kite has found a home playing a cook from Ukraine on CBS’s half-hour comedy 2 Broke Girls, starring Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs. In addition to acting on the silver screen, Jonathan Kite has a burgeoning career as a stand-up comic. With live performances at the Laugh Factory and a new comedy special in the works, Kite’s career is constantly growing. FINE Magazine spoke with the actor about his humble beginnings, comedic stylings and top tips for making a career out of impersonating others. How did you prepare for your role as Ukrainian chef Vanko Oleg Golishevsky on CBS’s 2 Broke Girls? I knew the [Ukrainian] accent because I grew up with those people. Most of my friends had first generation parents [originally from Ukraine], so we would

always do impersonations of them for fun. I spent a lot of time with them growing up, so the role as Vanko sort of came naturally. You partnered with BuzzFeed to do “9 Celebrity Impressions”—including an impersonation of President Donald Trump—that now has over 8 million views on YouTube. How do you mimic other people and create such vivid impersonations? Honestly, it’s different for everybody. I like to think of an angle or hear something I want to talk about. I’ll watch videos to get their mannerisms down. [Prior to the BuzzFeed video], I actually created my Trump voice impression before he even thought of running for President, and it was a lastminute addition for the video. What are your favorite type of acting roles? Variety is key in any great career. I love living in L.A. because of the variety it has to offer. I also love doing stand-up because it’s me and it comes naturally, but at the same time, I love voice over [jobs] because it’s learning new terms and challenging myself to portray a character I’m not necessarily “acting” out. You just filmed your first stand-up comedy special that’s in the process of being produced. What feelings did you have during filming? I haven’t done stand-up [for] that long, but I (CONTINUED...)

wrote it on the road really quickly. Writing stand-up is a lot more [work] than people think. It’s very difficult to switch gears from reading an Already-written script to actually writing one, and I’m used to doing scripted performances all week long. It was challenging, though I loved the challenge. I tried something new: storytelling. [With stand-up], you have to ask yourself, “Do you have good enough material to keep people’s attention for an hour?” Aside from writing my material, I also had to produce and be in charge of light and sound. So, to answer your question, I didn’t even have time for feelings! What can you tell readers about the standup special? It’s my Back-to-School Special shot at my old high school back in July. It’s a combination of different material. My old high school was an important and special place to film in because it was the place where I developed. It was only right to film my special there and get to see all of my old teachers and classmates. I had a blast going back. Sometimes, people feel that you can never go home, but it worked out excellently and [the show] was sold out! I’m excited for the release. What is one solid piece of advice you can give to anyone trying to break into the comedy or acting world? Find what you do the best! Find it and work on it until you have it [down] 100 percent. It can be really hard to find what you’re good at, but once you do, you will always have that as your identity. Also, make a name for yourself and stick with your strengths. People get so lost with ideas they eventually give up on because they’re not putting their focus on one idea at a time. You can do every idea, but what successful people did first helped them [complete] the next idea, and then the idea after that. For me it was comedy; I loved the idea of telling jokes as a kid, in class and in youth groups, and I owned that. It’s like a tree: the branches and leaves can’t grow without a strong foundation—or root, in the tree’s case. Once you have a solid root, there’s no limit to how big your tree can grow or how far out your branches can stretch. 2 Broke Girls is available to stream on Amazon and iTunes. Follow @jonathankite for more information about the CBS series and his stand-up comedy. 32

THE ACCIDENTAL JEWELER HOW SEAN LOGHMAN GOT ROPE-CHAINED INTO A LONG AND SUCCESSFUL CAREER BY COREY LEVITAN

“THIS IS A FUN JOB. SOMEBODY COMES IN, THEY’RE CELEBRATING A SPECIAL OCCASION, AND I MAKE THEM HAPPY.”

Most successful businesses are born of hopes and dreams. Loghman Jewelers—which at 28 years and counting holds the longest tenancy at Del Mar Plaza—was also born of panic. Sean and Alan Loghman wanted to move their parents down from the family home in Santa Maria, so the brothers hunted for a space for Mom and Dad to relocate their gift and jewelry shop. The Del Mar Plaza property called their names just from the drawings and model displayed by developers Ivan Gayler and David Winkler in 1987, when the plaza was still a dirt hill. “This was the crème de la crème,” Sean says. “And this space happens to be right on the corner, so whichever way you come up the stairs, you’re going to see it.” He and Alan signed the lease. Then, their parents changed their minds. “They said, ‘Oh yeah, why not? We’ll do this in San Diego,’” Sean remembers. “And then they said, ‘No, we are not coming. We are happy here—thank you, but no thank you.’ And I think it was a 10-year lease we had just signed. So it was like, ‘Oh my God!’” The brothers had to open something. Since the family had planned on it being a jewelry store, that’s what it became. “We thought we might as well do it,” Sean says. “It was a leap of faith.” The brothers were both engineers at the time, Sean having studied civil engineering at SDSU. But it was an unfortunate time to be in that industry, since the Challenger space shuttle had just blown up and tens of thousands of engineers were laid off due to mothballed projects. The brothers were familiar with starting from scratch. They watched their parents do it after the Iranian Revolution in 1979. “We had lost our home and, more importantly, our country,” says Sean, who has lived in America since age 14. Fortunately for their parents, they were visiting Sean and Alan in America when Ayatollah Khomeini seized power, so they didn’t need to flee for their lives. “The plan was never for my brother and I to stay in America,” Sean says. “We came here to finish our education and go back, but we were never able to.” Neither living out the rest of their lives as Americans nor entering the jewelry business, were things that the Loghman brothers planned to do. But Sean says he couldn’t be happier the stars aligned as they did. “We fell in love with the U.S.,” Sean says. “I am so happy because here, you do have a chance to assimilate, to become an American. And I love the jewelry business,” he continues. “This is a fun job. Somebody comes in, they’re celebrating a special occasion, and I make them happy.” These somebodies have included Oprah Winfrey, Silvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Demi Moore and Bruce Willis (who dropped in as the couple they were at the time). “My customers have become my good friends,” Sean continues. “I’ve attended their children’s weddings. And I get to travel all over the world in search of designers and suppliers, bringing back fabulous jewels and wonderful memories.”

In 1910, on the fringe of newborn Balboa Park, architect Norman Foote Marsh unveiled the Park Place Methodist Episcopal Church, an acclaimed structure known as “The Abbey.” This striking embodiment of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture boasts a dozen stained glass windows, and is topped with a triumphant statue of Gabriel. The building is believed to be the only classical-revival structure still standing in San Diego. The Abbey is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, an enormous honor reserved for a limited amount of places. Today, The Abbey on Fifth is a private facility managed by Hornblower Cruises & Events, recipients of the prestigious “Finest Service Award.” Two domed, stained glass skylights bathe the room in a pale glow, while the stained glass windows cast a heavenly light. The feel is a Renaissance cathedral with dark, polished redwood molding and woodwork. The Abbey is a full-service facility, so after a ceremony up to 300 guests are treated to an elegant reception. Gourmet cuisine is prepared on-site, where bread has been broken and wine shared for 100 years. The services of a fulltime wedding coordinator are also available to help you make the most of this unique location.

Ring the Wedding Bells STUNNING RINGS TO SYMBOLIZE YOUR MARRIAGE

The story of your love is precious, something to be treasured and retold again and again, but did you know some of our strongest wedding traditions have a deep history, too? Engagement and wedding rings originated almost 6,000 years ago in Egypt, where braided rings of hemp or reeds were traded between spouses. Historians conclude that the Egyptians wore these symbols of loyalty and affection on the fourth finger of their left hand because the Egyptians believed the vein of love—or vena amoris—ran directly from the body’s heart to the top of the modern day “ring finger.” Nowadays, a wedding ring symbolizes an everlasting connection—with no clear ending or beginning to a ring’s circular shape, a ring is the embodiment of an eternity of love and happiness. As an emblem of the love you feel for your sweetie, a ring should be something you never take off. With such hefty promises weighing down on a small piece of metal, it’s imperative to find the engagement or wedding ring best suited to your tastes—just like with a bride’s wedding gown, consider all of your bejeweled options before committing to a ring.

PERFECT FIT

FIND THE BEST TUXEDO FOR YOUR BODY With San Diego’s year-round wedding season and plethora of high-end events, keeping a perfectly tailored tux on hand is essential. Proper fitting tux gives a true gentleman an unrivaled level of sex appeal reminiscent of Rick Blaine and James Bond. Whether you’re a groom, the best man or a spectator sitting in the pews, looking sharp in a tuxedo is an absolute must. Take pride in your appearance and avoid ill-fitting tuxedos at your next wedding or luxury event. Large-scale retail locations such as Men’s Wearhouse or the high-end Nordstrom offer an endless selection of quality jackets and neckties, including products made by Vera Wang, Hugo Boss and Calvin Klein. The benefits of purchasing a tuxedo at a large retail location are the endless options and convenience—Nordstrom and Men’s Wearhouse both offer a lifetime seams guarantee (meaning each seam can be altered hundreds of times over the lifetime of the tuxedo). Big chains are also great for wedding parties because they can ensure that all groomsmen look uniform and well put-together. And, with a Men’s Wearhouse or Nordstrom in almost every county, any quick, last-minute changes can be easily completed, such as fixing a split seam or replacing a lost tie. That being said, according to Nordstrom fitting specialist Dmitri Vujic, the biggest mistake a man can make with tuxedos is not taking the time to be properly fitted. “You have so many guys that come in last minute expecting to walk away with the perfect-fitting tuxedo,” says Vujic. “There’s an art to this, and it’s important to give yourself time to try different options to see what will fit your body best and make sure everything is tailored to your specific measurements.” In a lot of ways, purchasing a new tuxedo is similar to purchasing a wedding dress—you need to shop around, try a number of options and make sure you spend a little extra money to get the apparel properly fitted. If you’re hesitant to commit, an overwhelming large-scale retail store will probably serve to only daze and confuse; small boutique shops instead will often offer an individualized experience. For example, GSB Men’s Clothier in Rancho Santa Fe offers made-to-measure tuxedos, custom-made shirts and styling/fitting appointments. GSB offers multiple fitting and styling options for their clients, including private home or office appointments. According to owner Gary Sanfir, GSB’s flexibility is designed with one person in mind: the client. “Advice from a tailor can go a long way to helping shape a client’s own fashion tastes and preferences,” Sanfir says. “It is very important that customers feel confident about the way they look in their attire. Part of a tailor’s job is to instill this confidence.” The actual purchasing of such an expensive, high-end product can be daunting for many men, and it’s for that reason the tuxedo industry is suffering. Acknowledges Vujic, “Tuxedo sales are down. People would rather rent than buy.” With the high cost of a tuxedo—a Hugo Boss tux from Nordstrom can initially cost just over $1,000 without fittings or accessories—it’s understandable that renting formalwear is a booming business. Most tuxedo rentals cost approximately $200, and the process is straightforward: after meeting with a fitting specialist, the rental company takes some measurements and has the tuxedo ready for pickup within days. Yet rented tuxedos don’t carry the same magic as a purchased tuxedo. The chest fits a little looser than it should, the sleeves are perhaps awkwardly pinned instead of stitched. Maybe the inseam rides too low or the jacket lapels don’t lie flat. Whatever the flaw—and there’s always a flaw with a rented tuxedo—it pales in comparison to the stylish perfection of a tuxedo tailored to fit your every curve. Yes, purchasing a tuxedo is an intimidating, often laborious task. Men should begin shopping for their ideal fit well before they need the tuxedo, and lengthy fittings should not be neglected. But at the end of the long process, a true gentleman will walk away with something stunning, something that fits like it was handmade especially for your body. From a family wedding to a black-tie gala, a well-fitted tuxedo can last half a decade or more—so why would anyone rent? 46

Beauty products will make up the bulk of any Bridal Emergency Box, but don’t lose sight of the other oft forgotten essentials; packs of Kleenex (for joyful tears and last-minute blotting), needle and white thread (in case of a devastating tear), Band-Aids (new heels cause blisters) and extra hairpins will inevitably make your dream day run smoother. No matter how big or small your wedding is, a bride should always look—and feel—her best. A little extra planning will eliminate the stress of your big day, regardless of any bridal emergency!

AUSTRALIAN ACTRESS SARAH WYNTER BRINGS STRENGTH TO THE STATES Young girls are born with huge imaginations filled with make-believe stories of fantastical adventures and daily thrills. As they grow into young women, their imaginations begin to craft dreams of their futures—hope for a family, a strong career and wanderlust take over in their minds. While these young adults fight to bring their dreams to fruition, not all leave their world of make-believe behind. Enter Sarah Wynter, a modern circus act juggling her family, acting career and frequent traveling all at once. Born in Newcaster, Australia, Wynter left home for New York at 17 to study acting—what she intended to be a quick trip turned into a change of citizenship and the beginning of a long career playing make-believe for a living on the silver screen. With a varied repertoire that includes television shows such as Sex and the City, 24, Californication, Dead Zone, Windfall and Elementary, this New York resident of 25 years has brought her dreams to fruition through hard work and discipline. Currently, Sarah Wynter is a cast member on the Amazon Prime TV series Goliath, which stars Billy Bob Thorton and William Hurt. Recently renewed for a second season, this critical darling of a series centers around the fictional law firm Cooperman McBride, with Sarah Wynter portraying a widow and mother to one of the firm’s plaintiffs. Yes, taking on new personas is what Sarah Wynter does for a living—and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Wynter spoke with FINE Magazine Editor-atLarge Tracey Smith about her journey from Newcastle to New York and everything in between. When you were a girl in Newcastle, what did you want to be when you grew up? Oh, I only ever wanted to be an actor. I didn’t consider anything else, which is something I wouldn’t recommend coming up today. You’re supposed to have a backup plan. I started acting in school; I was in a lot of plays and musicals throughout high school. I had an aunt who was in a local theater company, and I moved to Sydney to go to boarding school, where I continued [acting]. I really never pursued anything else. It was sort of a childhood hobby that turned into a dream, and it became a reality for me. Did you have your sights set on coming to the United States to hone your acting career? Growing up in Australia, I had always planned on visiting New York City, seeing Broadway and maybe––in my wildest dreams––taking some acting classes and then going back home… I ended up just staying. I realized after a while that I was having the career that I wouldn’t have had in Australia, so it didn’t make any sense to go back. I’ve been here for twenty-five years now; I’m an American citizen. I’ve been here longer than I’ve lived in Australia, which more or less blows my mind these days. And if you had the chance to do it all over again? I would have to say I would do it exactly the same. A lot of people go to L.A. because that’s where television and film is, and it’s more “show business.” But I think I really am quite happy that I came to New York City first, did theatre, took acting classes, worked really hard—you know, suffered [Laughs]. Suffered in terms of struggled. I didn’t 60

work for a very long time, I was doing voiceovers and commercials and anything I could. I’m glad I took that route rather than go to Los Angeles first. I don’t regret anything in my life because I think it’s a wasted emotion—if you can call it an emotion—because there’s only so much you can do. No regrets for me! It’s a journey, not a race, and I never really feel like I’ve arrived because if you’ve arrived then where do you go? Tell me how you work with being bicoastal and a mother. It is a study in patience. I have five different calendars going on at once: I have three kids, so they all have their calendars, I have my professional calendar and I have my sort of “home mommy” calendar. I’m lucky I have a really great nanny and an understanding ex-husband, and we sort of just juggle it. If I’m working in California, I do a lot of flying. I don’t make them fly to visit me. I don’t want to disrupt their school or their activities or their social life, so it’s on me to do the traveling. Sometimes, I’ll fly home just to see them for two days, but it’s worth it. I really do limit my time away. Goliath is an Amazon Prime show, so it wasn’t a very long season in the way a network show would have 22 episodes. To do a series that is shorter or to take [on] more supporting roles makes me quite happy. How was your experience working with Billy Bob Thornton and William Hurt on Goliath? What was the formula you used to create magic on set? Billy Bob Thornton and William Hurt have both won Oscars, and I’ve grown up watching their movies and admiring their work. I think my recognition of being surrounded by that level of greatness was kept in check because I was there as an equal member of the Goliath cast, and it’s a very collaborative atmosphere. But it was an extraordinary opportunity to watch them do their thing—it almost felt like I didn’t have to act. Billy Bob Thornton comes from a career in acting and directing, and he’s

very comfortable on set. He made me feel comfortable if something my character said didn’t sound right [so] that I could speak up and say, “You know what, I don’t think Gina would say that here.” It made for a very comfortable atmosphere, and I think that working with people like that made me feel that I could stretch myself as an actress. These people are so respected and so accomplished that [the Goliath actors] kind of knuckled down and did their jobs because we’re not messing around! I think what is key is you show up, rehearse, hit your mark and keep things professional… Even with great material and great actors, sometimes you can end up with something that people don’t watch, but people have responded so beautifully to this series. The fans are so excited, and it’s been great to get this feedback from people… I’m very proud to be a part of it. It’s so nice to feel good about something that is being seen and [enjoyed]. What is it you love about playing Gina on Goliath? Is there a little bit of your personality that brings her to life? I think I respond to the maternal experience of being a mom. Gina is also a single mother, and she’s fiercely protective. I suppose I wouldn’t call myself fiercely protective because sometimes, if you’re overly protective, it can cloud your judgement. You want to allow your children to grow up and make their own decisions. I like that Gina is tough or may have made some choices that ultimately weren’t the right ones, but she listens. The more she listens, the more she learns. I think there always has to be something [in a character] that resonates in order for me to make it real. You’ve got to find something, and I suppose although Gina battled so much grief and loss, she’s grateful for what she has left and moves forward—you’ve always got to keep moving forward. Like Gina, I try to (although I don’t know if I always succeed) have a positive outlook—to look forward, not back. It’s so easy to get bogged down in the negative. Simply accept what you have and make the most of it.

If you tuned into your local rock station in July, you may have found yourself swaying to the hypnotic refrain of a woman making a deal with the devil. It’s the story of the crossroads—a place in Mississippi where it was rumored musicians sold their souls for success—modernized and brought to life by the daring “Take Me Down,” which shot to the top of the mainstream rock charts last summer. There’s a fervor behind the lyrics as 23-year-old singer Taylor Momsen audaciously proclaims, “Don’t care what happens when I die; as long as I’m alive, all I want to do is rock.” There’s more passion in her voice, her song, her words than most musicians display in their entire careers, and it’s that passion that has catapulted Momsen’s band to international success. Momsen is the songwriter and frontwoman of The Pretty Reckless, a New York City rock band currently signed with Razor & Tie. Though Momsen is perhaps best known for her co-starring role in the 2007 CW series Gossip Girl as Jenny Humphrey, she has long since left all public associations to Little J and acting in her childhood with the release of The Pretty Reckless’s second album, Going to Hell. The album features three mainstream rock chart-toppers and gave the band an influx of new fans throughout the world. With a steadfast focus on making quality rock music, Momsen and The Pretty Reckless released the band’s highly acclaimed third album, Who You Selling For in October 2016 with two singles that spent weeks on the charts. Now midway through the Who You Selling For tour, Taylor Momsen spoke with FINE Magazine about the new album, her writing style and breaking mainstream rock records. Fueled by heart and humanity, Who You Selling For is a memorable walk through all sub-genres of rock music. The album covers a variety of sentiments and sounds over the course of its twelve songs, taking the listener through conflicting thoughts and into a twisted, convoluted excursion with hints of both hard rock and blues, desperation and hope. Who You Selling For is steeped in contrary emotions but, according to Momsen: “That’s just life, man. [Laughs]. I think in being human, your emotions range, your thoughts range. With this record, we tried to put no limitations on ourselves when it came to writing. That’s what’s so cool about rock and roll—it’s freedom.” That freedom is present in Who You Selling For’s first single, “Take Me Down,” which features scratch—or reference track—elements. Explains Momsen, “‘Take Me Down,” [uses] scratch vocal and scratch guitar. We tried to beat it, but we couldn’t—it was that first-take magic.” It set a precedent for recording the rest of the record as if they were performing live—no overdubs, no manipulations, just pure music. “We really tried to capture the human element so you can hear the person behind the [music] and not have everything be perfect,” Momsen says. “Everything can be digitally manipulated now, but you lose so much of the humanity by doing that… We wanted to keep it as honest and raw as possible.” It’s what separates Who You Selling For from other albums released nowadays; while most artists produce a uniform sound from start to finish, The Pretty Reckless boldly opens Who You Selling For by Momsen joking with a bandmate to “get your s*** together” before the raw opening ballad begins—and in doing so, the album becomes a personal, intimate experience for the listener. 62

The Pretty Reckless continues their Who You Selling For tour, returning to the United States on April 25th after a multimonth international leg that took the band from Europe and Russia to South America. While the tour is in support of the band’s third studio album, The Pretty Reckless is featuring some of their earlier music as well, something Momsen says has been a welcome experience. “We have a plethora of material, so we can switch it up every night,” Momsen explains. “We’re playing longer than we’ve ever played before—we’re almost at two hours now—which allows for freedom with the setlist.” That setlist features a mixture of music from all three albums, including some songs the band hasn’t performed since their initial tour. “Obviously, the newest material is the most fun for us to play right now because it’s the freshest,” Momsen allows, “but at the same time, we’re bringing back some old songs we haven’t played in years, like the title track from the first record, ‘Light Me Up.’ That’s fun for us too, because it almost feels new again, which is the cool thing about music—it constantly evolves. Music changes as you change.” Change and evolution are certainly evident in The Pretty Reckless’s sound, and a large part of that stems from Momsen’s own growth and development. Beginning with The Pretty Reckless’s first album, Light Me Up—written and released when Momsen was just 15, Momsen has co-written all songs with lead guitarist Ben Phillips. The Pretty Reckless’s music largely reflects what’s inside Momsen’s head, and as she has progressed, so too has the band. “The writing and playing has all grown in a natural way out of the fact that we’re older and have toured the world multiple times,” Momsen admits. “That certainly impacts your insight.” Fans are responding to Momsen’s bold writing and The Pretty Reckless’s ever-changing sound; the band has had four consecutive #1s on the Mainstream Rock charts, holding the record for the most #1s by a female-fronted rock band. While Momsen is excited to be breaking records in the industry—“It just means more and more people are hearing the art and music I slave over,” she quips—her focus is on creating music she can be proud of, not the charts. In fact, though holding the female-fronted rock band record excites her, Momsen doesn’t pay much attention to the implications behind that record—namely, the gender imbalance in rock music. “We’re all doing the same job, so I don’t see a

difference,” Momsen says, speaking about being a female in a male-dominated genre. “We’re all musicians on the road trying to write the best songs we can. A good song is a good song, and hopefully it resonates with the public.” In addition to supporting Who You Selling For with a tour, Momsen is juggling a number of secret projects that will hopefully be released soon. While the band is currently working on a live album, The Pretty Reckless is also foraying into new ground. “We’re putting visual content for [Who You Selling For] together now so you can not just hear [the music] but also see it and understand it on a deeper level,” Momsen says. The project isn’t simply a collection of music videos and is intended to highlight some of the multi-faceted aspects of Who You Selling For… but that’s all Momsen will divulge for the time being. “I don’t want to give too much away. It’s a complicated record, and it takes some time for the listener to completely connect to it and understand it because there are a lot of levels… But the main focus right now is touring, continuing to write and hopefully getting back into the studio sooner than later,” she explains. Between constant touring and writing new music, Momsen’s free time is severely limited, but that’s the way she likes it— even her few spare moments are brimming with creativity. “If I’m home, I’m playing songs by myself, and if I’m on tour I’m playing songs for people. There is no separation,” Momsen admits. Still, despite the passion for music that permeates her life, Momsen takes steps to ensure her sanity. “When I get off the road, I isolate myself from people get my bearings again, because touring can become a bubble. You can lose yourself a bit. I try to recenter before I go back out into the storm.” The storm is where Momsen thrives, though, as is evident by the band’s ever-growing popularity and maturation. The Pretty Reckless’s growth from a youthful and rowdy group to a layered and daring rock band mirrors Momsen’s own growth as an artist and performer. Fueled by her passion and artistic ambition, The Pretty Reckless will undoubtably continue to thrive and evolve for as long as they make music—given Momsen’s overwhelming talent, the band will likely be gracing airwaves for years to come. And maybe, with her hard work, bold ideas and passion for performing, Momsen won’t have to sell her soul at the crossroads after all. Monterey, located a couple hours north of Paso Robles, is a beautiful coastal town with a delightful main strip, Cannery Row, that offers restaurants, bars, shops and, most importantly, Carmel Ridge Winery. This winery offers a fresh and sunshinefilled tasting room with a relaxed atmosphere. The tasting room overlooks the ocean, giving couples a perfect view of the vibrant sunset in the evening. What sets Carmel Ridge Winery apart is its unique food menu; the winery provides a limited number of dishes prepared with its wines. Its six-acre Hidden Hills vineyard is home to an award-winning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir—perfect for a quiet evening of tasting wines by the sea. The most elegant and grandiose of the wineries situated along our coastal wine road trip is Testarossa Winery in the Los Gatos Mountains. This company is not only the fourth oldest continuously operating winery in California, but it’s also a beautiful venue for those without a budget who love elegance. Originally built by Jesuit brothers in 1888, the Testarossa family bought the property in the 1990s after the priests stopped making wine. Known for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Testarrossa also offers small plates, cheese and charcuterie to nibble on throughout the day. Unexpected in this region and quick to bring back a hint of home, MJA Vineyards in Santa Cruz provides a Hawaiian vibe. Kona coffee is roasted on property, and a cozy wood-burning fireplace rests in the corner of the tasting room. Owner John Artukovich is originally from Croatia; descending from a long line of winemakers, Artukovich has experience and devotion for all things wine-related at this fun and friendly location. But what makes MJA so unique is its selection of Napa Cabernets, with grapes grown at Howell Mountain, St. Helena and Napa vineyards. Offering delicious Napa Cabernets at Santa Cruz prices, MJA Vineyards is the perfect way for any young couple to start their wine collection. From Santa Cruz, the wine regions of Sonoma and Napa Valley are just a hop and a skip away. While these counties offer a beautiful final destination for your winery road trip, there’s no hurry to arrive quickly. Enjoy your leisurely drive up the coast and sample all of the wines California has to offer with your new husband or wife. Get lost in the charm of it all, but don’t forget to take pictures—this romantic honeymoon will be one for the books.

The Maestro’s Swan Song JAHJA LING’S LEGACY WITH THE SAN DIEGO SYMPHONY

After a remarkable 13 years with the San Diego Symphony, Maestro Jahja Ling will conclude his tenure as the symphony’s music director this May with a grand finale featuring the works of Johannes Brahms and Jean Sibelius. Ling’s talent is unrivaled and has not only helped shape the careers of many aspiring musicians but has touched the hearts of those who had the pleasure of watching his performances. From a young age, Ling has been making his mark in the music world. Born in Jakarta, Ling led the San Diego Symphony on its first international tour that included a sold-out performance at the famed Carnegie Hall in New York. After completing a master’s degree at Juilliard, he studied orchestral conducting at the Yale School of Music under Otto-Werner Mueller and received a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in 1985. Together, Ling and the Symphony have released eight new live recordings, the first recordings by the San Diego Symphony in over a decade. (CONTInUED...)

Ling’s talent will be greatly missed in San Diego, but his legacy will continue to live on through the quality precedent Ling set. FINE Magazine spoke with Jahja Ling about his history with the San Diego Symphony and his future projects. What was your inspiration to pursue a career in music? I feel like I was born with musical talent. I found that I could play piano at a very young age, and when I played at home, I became very touched and mesmerized by the sounds. I worked on a lot of great things in Jakarta with my teachers in an orchestra that made me want to study music even more. It was that kind of sound that led me to study at Juilliard, where I was very privileged to work with some of the best professors that helped lead me to where I am today. I think it was this progression of events from childhood to working in orchestras in Europe, Asia and America that helped me build my musical credentials and share my knowledge with others. How did you initially get involved with the San Diego Symphony? Thirteen years ago, the San Diego Symphony was looking for a musical director. I initially started out as a regular conductor, but I needed more assurance of financial stability. Out of all the positions available, this one seemed to offer the most prospect and opportunity. The people that I have worked with [in San Diego] are so talented and have helped make this job enjoyable. The San Diego Symphony offered the most in terms of musical production and recording, and I have had the pleasure of working with some very talented musicians. One of the most challenging aspects of your job is trying to coordinate your musicians to work in cohesion. How do you bring them together to work as a team? We hire the best musicians. We have some of the best 78

people audition to work with the San Diego Symphony, and it helps make my job a lot easier. Ultimately, you must listen and work with each other to achieve the desired results, and everything will usually fall into place with hard work. It’s my job as the conductor to nurture the musicians and help piece everything together so we can work in unison and [with] cohesion. What is one of your most memorable moments over the course of your tenure with the San Diego Symphony? I have particularly enjoyed the opportunities I’ve had to reach out to the young musicians that are currently in school and hope to take part in the symphony one day. I have also had the opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall in front of a sold-out audience. It was just an unbelievable experience. After that, we were able to take a trip to China to play in Shanghai and Beijing. It was just crazy because we played an encore for our audience and the musicians were playing excellently. I was very happy and fortunate to have shared these moments with the musicians in the orchestra [and with] the San Diego Symphony. What’s your next project? I hope to work with younger musicians as their mentor to help them realize their true talents and surpass their own expectations. I have children and grandchildren that I am looking forward to spending more time with as well. I have been named the first conductor laureate in the history of the San Diego Symphony, which means that I will have the opportunity to come back and continue my work with them in the future, and I am very excited about that. It is very special that I will be able to continue working with my old colleagues. Jaha Ling’s final concert—for now, at least—will be May 26th–28th at Copley Symphony Hall. Tickets are available now at sandiegosymphony.org.

36, & Counting NORTH COAST REPERTORY THEATRE ANNOUNCES THEIR 36TH SEASON

The rich and storied history of the North Coast Repertory Theatre continues with their recently announced 36th season, encompassing shows from September 2017–August 2018. With intimate and beloved performances throughout the year, North Coast Repertory Theatre is a San Diego staple that continues to shine. Founded in 1982, North Coast Repertory Theatre is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization and professional theater located in Solana Beach. With critical acclaim and citywide support, North Coast Rep has become one of San Diego’s leading performingarts organizations. The theater takes pride in its award-winning mainstage season, wherein it performs year-round to over 40,000 people annually. Under Artistic Director David Ellenstein— who has served as artistic director since 2003—the local theater company has selected personal, heartfelt and entertaining productions throughout its previous 35 seasons, and season 36 is no exception. Says Ellenstein: “We have chosen to present stories that will appeal not only to our loyal subscribers, but to a broad spectrum of theatre-goers throughout the county.” Season 36 begins with the always funny Neil Simon’s Last of the Red Hot Lovers, followed by John Steinbeck’s classic dramatic novellaturned play Of Mice and Men in October. The season also features the Alan Ayckbourn comedy How the Other Half Loves in April of 2018. In addition to the above classic productions, the new North Coast Rep lineup includes three West Coast premieres and one San Diego premiere. February’s drama This Random World (written by Steven Dietz), May’s Tony-nominated The Father (written by Florian Zeller) and July’s joyful The Soul of Gershwin: The Musical Journey of an American Klezmer are all new to the West Coast. Playing in January 2018 is the San Diego premiere of Around the World in Eighty Days, the classic Mark Brown production adapted from the original novel by Jules Verne. Looking for something fun to do this holiday season? North Coast Rep returns with not one, but two engaging productions: Impro Theatre’s Dickens Unscripted and Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold. Both shows offer hilarity, tenderness and the inviting spirit of Christmas—perfect for a chilly winter evening. With an intriguing array of comedies, dramas and a Gershwin musical finale, North Coast Repertory Theatre’s 36th season is sure to be a wild and fun journey from start to finish! Tickets are available through calling (858) 481-1055 or online at northcoastrep.org. A subscription package—tickets to seven shows for the price of six—is also available upon request. 80

Season 36 ANNOUNCING

NORTH COAST REPERTORY THEATRE | 2017–2018

Last of the Red Hot Lovers

APRIL 11 – MAY 6, 2018

By Alan Ayckbourn Directed by Geoffrey Sherman Britain’s brilliant comic genius, Sir Alan Ayckbourn penned a fast‑paced and hilariously theatrical meal. A portrait of three very different marriages turns into a spirited game of mixed doubles involving sex, jealousy and ingenious stagecraft. Full of clever, razor‑sharp dialogue and impeccable split‑second timing and twists, HOW THE OTHER HALF LOVES promises to leave you in stitches.

SEPTEMBER 6 – OCTOBER 1, 2017

Directed by Christopher Williams Nobody does Neil Simon like North Coast Rep! Barney Cashman, middle aged, overworked, and with no experience in covert maneuvers, is bored with his bland “nice” life. He is anxiously trying to join the sexual revolution before it’s too late, and his attempts at seduction will leave you howling with laughter.

Of Mice And Men

WEST COAST PREMIERE

By Florian Zeller Translated by Christopher Hampton Directed by David Ellenstein A sensation, honored with numerous awards, including a Tony nomination for Best Play. André, now 80, was once a tap dancer who lives with his daughter Anne and her husband Antoine. Or was he an engineer whose daughter lives in London with her new lover? He is starting to wonder if he’s losing control. THE FATHER promises to be a profoundly moving and memorable evening in the theatre.

Directed by David Ellenstein John Steinbeck’s classic drama novella‑turned play OF MICE AND MEN electrified audiences in 1937. The story of George and Lenny remains just as relevant and continues to be part of our country’s collective imagination — a tale of friendship that is sustained by illusory dreams. This is must‑see theatre you cannot afford to miss.

Around The World In Eighty Days JANUARY 10 – FEBRUARY 4, 2018

Adapted by Mark Brown From the novel by Jules Verne Directed by Allison Bibicoff Stampeding elephants! Runaway trains! Join Phileas Fogg in the original “Great Race,” circling the globe alive with danger, romance, and comic surprises. In the hilariously theatrical style of The 39 Steps, 5 actors portray 42 characters in a thrilling race against time. Grab your family, your passport and book passage now for this outrageously funny adventure. WEST COAST PREMIERE

This Random World FEBRUARY 21 – MARCH 18, 2018

By Steven Dietz Directed by David Ellenstein Through a swirl of nearly missed connections, THIS RANDOM WORLD follows a series of intersecting lives: A mother determined to maintain her independence, a daughter longing for adventure, and an internet prank gone awry. Warmly humorous and lyrically bittersweet, this play investigates what it is to love, to lose, and to be touched by the serendipity of life.

Bridal BLOSSOMS FLORAL DESIGNS AND BOUQUETS MADE FOR YOUR WEDDING While the venue and photography are still the biggest areas for wedding spending, there’s a surprising increase in the cost of wedding florals. From expressing personal style to unforgettable statement structures, florals are taking root in weddings. FINE Magazine spoke with LaVonne Crawford of Adorations Botanical Artistry about the dos and don’ts of floral arrangements. How do you choose the flowers that are included in a floral design? I would say season, color and the personality of the client are probably the top items—and price, of course. I do communicate with [clients] during the meeting about the premium flowers and their substitutions. Garden roses are a great substitute for peonies, and garden roses are available in California year-round. Peonies have a season from Mother’s Day through the end of June… Fortunately, being in California, you can get your dream flowers more often than not, but you do pay a higher price.

Are there any types of flowers that are the best for weddings? I think peonies and garden roses really speak to brides currently. Garden roses in the last five years have really gained momentum and popularity. Orchids are always popular for a more modern bride. It depends on the client, too. Is there anything to avoid? No, I don’t think so. Everything is on a case by case basis. Something we would avoid [or find] overused could be a bride’s dream. She might have dreamt of baby’s breath clouds floating above her guests’ heads her whole life, and maybe we’ve done that 30 times this year, but it doesn’t matter. It’s her dream. What’s your favorite floral trend right now? I personally love greenery. I know that right now, it’s really abundant. The Pantone color of the year is green, so I have a lot of brides who love garlands, mixed greenery garlands and more greenery than I’ve ever seen… I love that things are feeling more natural and

• FACEBOOK.COM/FINEMAGAZINES

organic. As a designer always trying to meet the needs of the client, there is a bit of compromise that you make for your own personal tastes. But what’s happening now happens to be in alignment with my own tastes, so I’m really happy about that. What’s one thing brides should splurge on and one thing brides can skip when it comes to floral design? [A bride] should splurge on her bouquet and her sweetheart or head table— whatever area she’s going to be standing in, because that’s going to be in all the photos. Arches or

anything [for the] ceremony where they’re exchanging the vows that is going to ensconce them in florals is a nice investment. As far as skipping? Cocktail hour. Candlelight is enough. What should brides look for when picking out their flowers, especially if they have no idea what to expect? When [a client comes] to us, we want them to be an open book. For me, it’s my job to draw out who [a client] is so I can send them in the right direction. For general advice, [a bride should] definitely have a picture of her wedding dress—that will be a big indicator of what she’s attracted to in style!
