EL PASEO OPENING 2014
Mike Hannon and Quentin Smith proudly announce they
have joined the luxury real estate brand’s global network as Engel & VÜlkers Ranch-Coast San Diego, bringing enhanced services and global exposure to the San Diego market.
We link together the aspirations of discerning individuals around the world, be it in a private or a business context. With total passion.
Who are Engel & Völkers? Since its beginning in 1977 as a specialty boutique providing exclusive, high-end real estate services in Hamburg, Germany, Engel & Völkers has become one of the world’s leading companies specializing in the sale and lease of premium residential and commercial property and yachts. Engel & Völkers currently operates a global network of over 4,600 real estate advisors in 500 residential brokerages and 43 commercial offices spanning 38 countries across six continents, offering both private and institutional clients a professionally tailored range of luxury services. It established its North America corporate headquarters in 2007 and opened its first brokerage in the same year. Committed to exceptional service, Engel & Völkers supports its advisors with an array of premium quality business services; marketing programs and tools including multiple platforms for mobile, social and web, as well as access to its global network of real estate professionals, property listings and market data. Each brokerage is independently owned and operated. Why did you choose the E&V Brand? We choose the E&V brand because it is a truly international real estate firm with over 500 interconnected shops around the world. In addition to its distinctive brand, E&V offers our advisors an unheard of level of support via unique online exposure with personal presence on the most visited web sites, shop and agent web sites, GG Magazine and training through its real estate academy. This support, plus all of the other Distinctive Marketing Measures provided by E&V, allows our advisors to market their clients’ properties to buyers around the world. How will an Engel & Völkers shop change the market in your area? Our Solana Beach Shop, located in the heart of Cedros Design District - and the upcoming shops in Encinitas, Carlsbad and Rancho Santa Fe, will be the first in our area which are uniquely branded and reflect the new client centric model for real estate. This model allows us to put the client’s needs and
wants first and foremost. We limit the number of agents in each shop to no more than 30 - 40. Each agent is trained to be a hyper local specialist in their preferred market. This allows them to focus their efforts in a meaningful way and provide the higher quality service and expertise needed to exceed their client’s expectations. For us it is truly all about the client, not the brand or the advisor. How would you describe the real estate market in your area? Solana beach and the entire North San Diego County are enjoying a robust real estate market and a strong recovery from the real estate melt down which began in 2007. In 2013 year over year price increases averaged over 20%. In 2014, we see increases in the 6% range as the market begins to equalize. However, continued low interest rates and the demand for So Cal real estate in prime locations mean that 2014 will be another very good year for buyers and sellers alike. As an example, Solana Beach and its neighboring communities of Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Encinitas and Carlsbad all offer ocean front condominiums and homes, golf course town homes, beach cottages and contemporary and traditional homes with great views and lovely neighborhoods. With great schools, many different neighborhoods and some of the finest beaches and weather in Southern California, in addition to easy access to downtown San Diego and Orange County, we are ideally located. Who are the buyers and what does the market offer for them? Who are the international buyers and what countries are they coming from? Our buyers are families, professionals, people in San Diego’s burgeoning bio-science and medical industries, as well as, second home owners and empty nesters from the U.S., Canada, Mexico and abroad. “We invite you to experience the higher standards we have developed to market our properties, our brand, and ourselves with competence, exclusivity and passion.” — Mike Hannon and Quentin Smith, Licensed Partners

San Diegans a staycation retreat.
A
nautical atmosphere prevails on Shelter Island, one of San Diego’s principal boating centers, where marinas, resort hotels, restaurants and bayside parks welcome sailors and landlubbers with recreational amenities. Many short- and long-range sportfishing trips depart from here, and avid aficionados catch a host of Pacific fish like yellowtail, albacore, halibut, dorado, calico bass and a variety of rockfish. At the end of Shelter Island, you’ll find the Yokohama Friendship Bell, a large bronze bell housed in a pagoda structure, which was a gift from the city of Yokohama, Japan, in 1958 to commemorate the sister-city relationship

between San Diego and Yokohama. Kona Kai Resort & Marina, located on the very tip of Shelter Island, is a timeless San Diego Bay treasure, offering captivating marina and bay views, creating a surprising atmosphere and delighting guests with an intimate SoCal experience in a fresh environment—inspiring the American Spirit and revitalizing the soul. Classic in style with alabaster walls, red tile roofs and archways, the warm and alluring atmosphere has, for decades, played host to dignitaries and film stars alike. Having recently undergone a $22-million refreshment, new beginnings are in store for Kona Kai Resort &
Marina and wonderful improvements are being made to completely restore the iconic resort. During the second phase of the transformation, Kona Kai is welcoming guests to experience the enfolding of a new chapter for one of San Diego’s favorite spots. The first phase of the transformation entailed revamping the resort’s 129 guest rooms, lobby and waterfront restaurant. In redesigning Kona Kai, the goal was to create an iconic San Diego experience. With a nod toward its Spanish Colonial architecture, the lobby includes chandeliers and elegant classic furnishings in white and dark shades of woods with distressed brass finished in dark woods and forged, blackened hardware. Accents in gold and turquoise, emulating the sun and sea, are prevalent throughout. With Kona Kai’s novel teal color as a signature wall, the refreshed guest rooms include sea-fan motif to reminiscent of the ocean, while plush white beds with dramatic, yet classic, tufted headboards await. New technology includes flat screen TVs and iHome radios. Kona Kai’s freestanding all-day dining venue offers New American cuisine prepared by Executive Chef Erik Nitsche, served in a casual, stylish atmosphere. The regional coastal fare created by Chef Erik incorporates local, seasonal and sustainable ingredients, taking traditional delicacies and giving them a flavorful twist, such as Pulled Pork Sliders with crispy onions, served with baja slaw, and Chili Rubbed Baked Snapper with lemon potatoes, served with roasted tomato sauce. In terms of design, the restaurant leans toward vintage beach culture, combining modern Scandinavian elements with distressed, white-washed wood and raw materials. An aged brass sculpture and hand-forged chandelier, combining remnant metal with repurposed Sputnik lights, creates a dramatic entry. Vessels, in varying sizes and colors, are scattered throughout. Mirrors reflect light and add sparkle from the glistening bay, and a large dome centered over the middle of the restaurant reminds dinners of an evening sky. Varying table heights allow for views from every seat within. Black, white and varying shades of the sea are omnipresent, thereby confirming that one is sitting within a distinctive marina environment, chock-full of flair, sophistication and history. FIRST IN FLIGHT Bringing Quality of Life to Travel BY BONNIE KUTCH

lying privately with Schubach Aviation provides a world of difference from commercial airline travel. Based at Palomar Airport and Lindbergh Field, this local private aviation company serves people who want maximum control over their travel experience. Above all, they want quality of life. Schubach Aviation’s clients get what they need when they need it. That might mean flying half way around the world at a moment’s notice, making a five-city scouting trip in a day or hosting a special birthday celebration at 45,000 feet in the air. As San Diego’s preeminent on-demand air charter company, Schubach Aviation puts passengers’ wishes first. That’s probably why the company has been voted residents’ first choice of air charter firms year after year.
32
The Schubach Aviation hangar at McClellanPalomar Airport in Carlsbad, CA. Schubach is excited to add the Phenom 100 aircraft (as seen on cover) to their fleet this summer.
WHY FLY PRIVATE CHARTER?
ELITE FLEET OF AIRCRAFT
Flying private is not exactly inexpensive. So why do some people choose to pay up when traveling from point A to point B? On-demand charter lets you choose a departure time that works precisely for your schedule. If you happen to hit heavy traffic on the way to the airport, relax—your aircraft isn’t taking off without you. Rather than waiting in long airport lines, you drive up to your aircraft and you’re on your way within minutes. In what seems like no time at all, you arrive at your destination feeling relaxed, exhilarated and primed for whatever you have planned. Chances are you’re able to fly into an airport that’s closer to your destination, so you’ll get there sooner. Perhaps best of all, flying private gives you precious time—whether it’s time to prepare for a meeting, time to organize your travel plans or time alone with your family or significant other—from the moment of takeoff. Not a moment is wasted.
Schubach Aviation operates a fleet of 12 heavy, super midsize, midsize and light jets—all of which are maintained by the company’s own experienced maintenance crew members to exceed the highest level of safety standards in the industry. Its fleet includes a Gulfstream IV, Challenger 601, Challenger 300, Citation Sovereign, Hawker 800XP, Hawker 600, CJ1, Citation II and a King Air 100. The interiors of the aircraft offer maximum comfort, exquisite finishes, advanced in-flight entertainment systems, galleys stocked with snacks, and private restrooms. Some offer complementary Wi-Fi Internet access for those who need to stay connected during the flight to manage work, family, social networks and travel plans, and stay on top of their busy lives.
FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines
FLAWLESS SAFETY RECORD You can’t put a price on the safety of your life or that of
your family members and loved ones. That’s why Schubach Aviation employs a team of people who are leaders in the aviation community and committed to making sure that each and every flight is safe and secure. For 23 years the company’s safety record has remained impeccable—a claim few air charter companies can make. At a time in commercial aviation history when stringent security measures sometimes aren’t enough, and getting to your destination isn’t guaranteed, opting for private aviation is prudent. It takes the dread out of flying.
FOR BUSINESS OR LEISURE While leisure travelers make up a good portion of Schubach Aviation’s clientele, most are business people across a wide spectrum of industries, including finance, private equity, technology, media and entertainment. They fly via private charter when the cost of wasted time is too high, and when their personal down time is too limited. Schubach Aviation’s mission is to be the trusted partner and service provider to the most sophisticated private aviation consumers—both businesses and individuals. Schubach Aviation is about safety, choice and control. That’s why it tailors solutions that make the most sense for its customers. The company works directly with each customer to devise a personalized private aviation experience that meets their unique time, destination and budget requirements. Whether an important business meeting, company retreat, family vacation, or special
getaway, Schubach Aviation offers on-demand service and pricing for flights to destinations all over the world.
A PERSONAL TRAVEL EXPERIENCE Schubach Aviation makes private air travel personal. The company subscribes to the belief that passengers should feel like each one of them is the airline’s only passenger. For the company’s staff, this might mean arranging a gourmet meal from a favorite restaurant, tracking down a rare vintage wine, having a specific kind of car available upon landing or accommodating last-minute schedule changes. As a pet-friendly air charter firm, the VIP service will even be extended to the family dog. Both customers and their pets are given red-carpet treatment. Flying with Schubach Aviation is for people who expect more from their flying experience—more flexibility, more reliability, more value and more personalized service. Since 1991, the company has delivered on that promise by staying true to its guiding values and principles, which put its customers’ well-being at the forefront of every move it makes. More than any other private aviation company in the region, Schubach Aviation aims to preserve true customer service when traveling, afford people quality of life and allow them to fly anywhere, anytime—stress free. Schubach Aviation is headquartered at 2026 Palomar Airport Road, Carlsbad, CA 92011. For more information or to book your next flight, call (760) 929-0307. The company makes it easy to choose the best hand-crafted products for your skin’s needs by offering a plethora of choices including those for men, as well as man’s best friend, as you will discover further on. With an undeniable passion for her craft, she may become your new “bestie” in the beauty world. April’s artisan-crafted Shea Chic products are made and sold locally, but recognized nationally. The company has been featured on numerous shows. Kym Douglas, beauty editor of the Ellen DeGeneres Show and the Home and Family show on the Hallmark Channel represent just a couple highlights of recognition that have helped put Shea Chic on the map.
to have women embrace their inner youth, feel beautiful and appreciated, and use better ingredients in their products in order to help them live longer, healthier lives. April’s love for quality products does not end with just men and women. Her love for animals has driven her to invest in creating the finest quality all-natural soap for canines. After losing two of her bulldogs to cancer, she began questioning the ingredients used in pet care, and after two years of work she created the perfect soap. With each purchase of her allnatural Dog Soap, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Puppy Love Project, which helps provide funding for animal charities. “I love animals so much, and the best way to help them is through funding, and through Shea Chic, to help animals,” she says. April’s pay-it-forward attitude is formidable,
“IT REALLY IS A PASSION, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE WHAT I DO. TO BE REALLY CREATIVE… MAKE A CAREER OF IT… AND BE EXCITED FOR MONDAYS... I KNOW THIS IS EXACTLY WHERE I AM SUPPOSED TO BE.” Well-pampered women need products that can both act as multitasking agents and tantalize the senses. Shea Chic is at the ready to help women deal with their moisturizing requirements as well as indulge them in aromatic bliss with its massage candles. These innovative candles bring light to a room, create a romantic ambiance and emit a decadent fragrance when lit, but what makes them unique is that they can also be used as a massage oil and body moisturizer. Shea Chic’s quality massage candles melt into a liquid form that is fully absorbed by your skin, and within a few minutes, leave the skin soft and supple. California Girl Coconut & Vanilla Spa Candle, featured on Good Morning America and Access Hollywood, will bring your senses to the sandy beaches of the Pacific and have you searching for the cabana boy for your piña colada. California Girl is April’s favorite candle and has become the trademark of her company, representing high-quality ingredients with a fun and flirty edge. STYLE ON THE GO Stylish tips to remember while jet-setting to your favorite destinations. BY NICOLE LAWRENCE Who doesn’t love a good vacation? The traveling to get to your fabulous destination, on the other hand, is not so fun. But you don’t have to settle for feeling and looking tired when you arrive. With these great approved carry-on products, you can get to where you are going feeling refreshed, and looking like a travel goddess. PROTECT YOURSELF Yes, you are supposed to wear sunscreen, even when you’re on a plane (and every single day when you make it to your “vaca” destination!). The only time when you can get away with not wearing sunscreen? Never. Well, unless you are sick at home with your blinds closed all day. Then fine. Skip the SPF. The link between tanning and skin cancer has been proven over and over. Yet, for some reason, women still soak up the sun without applying sunscreen. It doesn’t matter if you think you look better with a tan. Go get a spray tan in that case, because you certainly won’t look better with sunspots, pigmentation or skin cancer. Estée Lauder’s DayWear Advanced Multi-Protection Anti-Oxidant & UV Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is my protection of choice. It will leave your skin feeling soft, smooth and comfortable. REFRESH I always make sure to have a rollerball perfume in my purse. Lately, I have been loving the Oh, Lola! By Marc Jacobs. With notes of raspberry, vanilla, peony and pear, it is the perfect spring/ summer scent, and great for refreshing your senses after a long plane ride.
42
REHYDRATE The severe low humidity in airplane cabins sucks all of the moisture out of your skin, so a good moisturizer is essential. Try Bliss’s Blood Orange+White Pepper Hand Cream— the macadamia and grape-seed oils keep hands flake-free. MyChelle Fruit Enzyme Mist is also totally vital. Its hyaluronic acid and essential oils turn dry skin dewy and keep it hydrated throughout the day. REVIVE Bad hair days are the worst!! Revive your hair with a nice brush. A good brush is everything! You use a junky brush, be prepared for crazy hair. The Lil’ Wet Brush is small (I’m obsessed with mine), but will detangle your hair with ease before landing so that you can arrive with revived locks. TIDY UP Pacifica Purify Coconut Water Cleansing Wipes are a must-have for flying. They gently cleanse your face while removing toxins, oil, pollutants and make-up from your skin without using water—anytime, anywhere. I’m also in love with Sephora’s Targeted Eye Remover Swabs. They are so convenient and great for quick and easy fixes, releasing just the right amount of remover to clean up everything from mascara to lipstick.
FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines
PLUMP Speaking of lipstick, swiping some color onto your lips does wonders to freshen your look. And while you’re at it, try one of this season’s hottest new lip shades— orange! That’s right. Orange is the new bright. It was seen on many runways, including DKNY, DSquared, John Galliano, Prabal Gurung, Rag & Bone, etc. And it looks fab on all skin tones! If you have an olive skin tone, it makes your skin appear even more olive toned. Or if you have a fair skin tone like mine, it enhances the pallor. My favorite lipstick at the moment is CHANEL’s Rouge Allure in Enjouée. GET GLOWING NARS Multiple is the perfect beauty product for traveling. You can apply the all-in-one makeup stick to your eyes, cheeks and lips for a freshfaced glow.
WAKE UP Say bye-bye to tiredlooking eyes, dark circles and puffiness. The Roll-Away Instant Eye Fatigue Corrector by Shu Uemura features a super convenient roll-on applicator and is filled with Guarana extract to stimulate circulation. Further brighten those tired eyes with an illuminating concealer plus two coats of mascara. MINTY FRESH When you can’t brush, there is this—Kissing Elixirs Fresh Breath Mist. The chic and portable design makes it easy to refresh on the go, giving you a long-lasting, concentrated burst of minty vanilla flavor. GET COLORFUL What’s the best accessory for after a long plane ride? Sunnies, of course. And sunny weather calls for bold glasses, so trade those boring black or tortoise shades for a pair that is as bright as your bikini will be, like this by Wildfox.

GLOBALLY INSPIRED Antiques from around the world create stunning interiors with cultural influence. BY JANETTE YEARLEY
A
ntiques have been used in décor for centuries and in many different ways. They add character and charm to any setting and can be used to either fill a room or utilized to “marry” the old world with contemporary taste, which through contrast highlights the individual character and beauty of each piece. A popular but often misused adjective in interior design today is “eclectic”. This term should mean a mixture of colors, time periods, styles, trends and textures. There is a fine line however, between a well orchestrated eclectic room and a chaotic unrelated space with no unifying elements or motifs. Filling a space entirely with antiques and vintage pieces may only take us straight down memory lane to Grandma’s house, however using an occasional inherited antique piece mixed in with more updated pieces is a fabulous way to highlight each piece separately and give the space visual excitement and a sort of discordant harmony. This in fact helps to relieve the monotony that can occur when using only one style throughout the room. Sometimes a piece might not be so easily woven into the existing décor in which case creating a vignette all its own can work wonderfully. By creating a special backdrop for the antique or vintage piece, it then becomes a strategic focal point rather than a hastily placed afterthought. Another way to work in a fabulous antique piece is to create something unexpected with it. I have done this many times in my own design work. Take a beautifully crafted wood framed French settee and change the finish
44
FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines
to a lustrous metallic and reupholster it in a chic or modern fabric. Perhaps add a bright daring coat of paint to a vintage piece or stencil it with a fanciful design. Changing the hardware out can also really change the look and feel of an older piece to give it a more exciting and new vibe. Hanging a modern piece of art hung over a distressed or vintage piece gives an exciting juxtaposition between old and new. Try pairing a modern chest with a classic antique rococo mirror and perhaps a vintage lamp and accessories on top for a look that pops! Hang a collage of modern bright artwork with a beautiful gold leafed mirror to lend a great look to an otherwise bare wall. If you haven’t been fortunate enough to have acquired any antique pieces but would like to consider adding some to your existing décor there are a number of places I have found over the years where one can find some amazing pieces and some wonderful unexpected finds. Estate sales are a great place to look and never underestimate the possibility of scoring a great piece at your neighborhood yard sales where often sellers have no idea of the value of the pieces they are “getting rid of”. Second hand stores and consignment shops are also a fun place to browse through to see just what might be hidden under a layer of dust or ugly paint. Auction sites can be literally filled with treasures, and even Ebay is a viable site to look for unique pieces and accessories. For the really good stuff shop Christie’s. Locally there are regular antique shows at the Del Mar Fairgrounds

The first and most important step is to plan ahead. Many tourist attractions have an abundance of tempting foods. To avoid these temptations, bring lots of healthy snacks to munch on while you’re sightseeing. Choose foods high in healthy fats to keep you satisfied longer; good options are: nuts, trail mix, granola and dried fruits. This will help prevent you from craving foods high in fat throughout your day, as well as boost your metabolism. This will not only save your waistline but your wallet as well. Eat as healthfully as possible. This can be a real challenge when you’re staying in hotels and don’t have much time to cook. However, there are some practices that can make it a bit easier to stay on track. As mentioned previously, bring snacks. Eat a big breakfast before you head out for the day. Don’t drink your calories; stick with water as much as possible. This alone can make all the difference. Try to choose a hotel with at least a kitchenette. If and when you find yourself in a situation where healthful food isn’t an option, try sharing a meal. It may not completely satisfy your hunger, but it will allow you more time to find a place with preferable options. Staying active can be difficult while on the road, since travel often involves long periods of sitting (whether in airplanes, trains, cars or meetings), but no one wants to spend a vacation at the hotel fitness center. Instead, walk whenever possible, or rent a bike. If your vacation is longer than three weeks, you might consider joining a local fitness class. Try something new and you could even get to know a few of the locals! Remember to be flexible, as there will likely be times when things don’t go as planned. Should that happen, don’t give up; just do your best to make healthy choices. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Getting bikini-ready for your next vacation doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. With proper diet and exercise, maintaining youthful skin and a shapely figure can be greatly enhanced by using quality skin care products, taking preventive measures and utilizing new technologies that provide ways to eliminate problem areas on the body. Dr. P. Alexander Ataii, MD, of Laser Clinique in Carmel Valley, shares his thoughts on getting destination ready for your summer vacation.

PREVENTION
“Using a proper wash or cleanser, a great moisturizer, sunscreen and—depending on one’s skin type—retinols, is essential to youthful looking skin,” said Dr. Ataii. CALMING GREEN TEA WASH This cleanser is designed to gently cleanse without drying. Its antioxidant formula contains a blend of green tea, polyphenols, caffeine, soy phospholipids, and liposome encapsulated Vitamins A, C and E. TNS ESSENTIAL SERUM The TNS Essential Serum, developed by SkinMedica, is the best product on the market, according to Dr. Ataii. This prescriptiongrade product features an anti-aging formula developed from a naturally occurring growth-factor serum, antioxidants, soluble collagen, cytokines and matrix proteins to help rejuvenate the skin. GREEN TEA TINTED SPF 50 This slightly tinted sunscreen has been formulated to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Added vitamin E, combined with Green Tea extract, helps heal the skin while protecting it from free radicals and supplying long-lasting hydration. RETINOL COMPLEX This topical product provides the components your skin needs to improve the appearance of imperfections caused by sun exposure, environmental assaults and aging. The skin will become visibly smoother, the appearance of fine lines and dark spots on the face will be minimized and a more even skin tone will allow its natural beauty to emerge.
FACIAL PROCEDURES
“Proper skin care starts with preventing sun damage,” said Dr. Ataii. But sometimes preventive measures are not enough. Dr. Ataii and his team at Laser Clinique have developed both simple and comprehensive treatments that significantly reduce sun damage, as well as improve the overall health and radiance of
skin. Dr. Ataii recommends these quick and non-surgical procedures are needed to achieve beautiful and fresh summer skin. IPL OR PHOTOREJUVENATION Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a laser treatment that helps reduce fine lines, wrinkles, rosacea, sun damage, uneven skin tone, melasma(hyperpigmentation) and age spots. With no downtime and minimal discomfort, this treatment allows patients to enjoy the
results in only three to five treatments. This laser treatment will greatly improve any discoloration and stimulate collagen. “Aside from treating existing damaged skin, IPL can also prevent the formation of pigmentation in the first place,” said Dr. Ataii. CHEMICAL PEELS Medical Grade Chemical Peels are cosmetic treatments designed to help erase imperfections by greatly improving the tone and texture of the skin. If you need results in a hurry, light medical grade chemical peels are the way to go. With full results in about a week, this facial procedure is ideal for patients who want to maintain the quality of their skin. Results are enhanced when combined with other treatments like Botox® Cosmetic and dermal fillers like Juvederm.
contouring treatment that freezes away stubborn fat. “This procedure actually mimics liposuction as far as results,” said Dr. Ataii. The CoolSculpting device uses a strong suction to pull loose fat into a chamber that uses a targeted cooling process that kills the fat cells underneath the skin. While the fat freezes, patients can kick back and enjoy a movie. With no downtime and full results in eight to twelve weeks, it sounds like science fiction but the results are real and permanent. MESO-CELLULITE Meso-Cellulite is an injection treatment that can dramatically reduce the appearance of cellulite and fatty deposits on the body specifically in outer thighs and buttocks. This simple treatment is the answer to a problem that almost all women struggle with. By breaking up the fat globules under the skin, the surface texture become more even and less dimpled. Because let’s face it, ladies--squats don’t get rid of cellulite. LASER HAIR REMOVAL Perfect for getting bikini-ready, improved technology has allowed treatments to become painless and fast. This means no messy gels, no numbing and no hassle. “Laser hair removal gave birth to an entire spectrum of laser cosmetic procedures,” said Dr. Ataii. The next generation of laser hair removal is virtually painless and can have lasting results with minimum maintenance.
BECOMING BIKINI-BODY READY
“Statistically eighty percent of women have cellulite and twenty percent of women believe they have cellulite,” said Dr. Ataii. When diet and exercise are not enough, these innovative body sculpting procedures can help get your body ready for that summer bikini. “With nearly 300 days of sunshine here in San Diego, getting ready for summer can happen almost anytime,” said Dr. Ataii. EXPLORE NEW GRAPES IN AN UNEXPECTED PLACE WITHIN SONOMA COUNTY.
By Balkis Nasery
Unpretentious in size but robust in beauty and unaffected by mainstream ideals, Healdsburg never ceases to amaze. There is a subtle grandeur to this little town where the inhabitants seek to live according to eco-friendly principles developed through sustainable practices. But do not be fooled; the town bursts at the seams with luxury boutiques and innovative wine-tasting rooms, and is a foodies’ mecca for farm-to-table eats. In Healdsburg no one is in a hurry. Everywhere you go, someone is sure to offer you a glass of vino and a lighthearted conversation about their adoration of their beloved town.

ealdsburg is nestled away in Sonoma County, which is less than an hour by car from San Francisco. The short drive to the village in the hills is just shy of breathtaking. Highway 101 opens up to the lush landscape of wild mustard blossoms blanketing the emerald green grass, stretching to the far vistas of the horizon. Quaint-looking sheep, statuesque stallions and Holstein-Friesians cows—the “Happy California Cows”—can be seen grazing in the fields. Healdsburg is located at the convergence of three famous valleys, Russian River, Alexander and Dry Creek, making the town the perfect trifecta for exponential possibilities for the growth of robust varietals. Winding roads that lead from one winery to another display an elegant landscape of grape vines, each unique to its own viticulture region. Heaven is in Healdsburg, so the town is sure to please every visitor. It’s a perfect place for those who want the kinder memories of small-town life, or to experience it for the first time. Healdsburg is centered around a modest 19th-century plaza, a Spanish-style town square laid out in 1856 by the town’s founder Harmon Heald, which features a gazebo and is decked out with fragrant blossoms of orange trees and surrounded by young redwood trees. Not a single chain store or restaurant can be found around the square, with each bijou-style business uniquely created by a citizen of Healdsburg. The square is the focus of special events throughout the year, including a boastworthy farmers market. A short walking distance from the square, picturesque Victorian homes perfectly converted into bed-and–breakfast establishments, welcome visitors to stay during their travels. Calderwood Inn, owned by Wilson Winery, is a quintessential B&B. Built in 1902, the Queen Anne Victorian-style house is embellished with young redwoods and cypress trees. The opulent interior is adorned with layered hand-printed Bradbury Art wallpaper and decorative antiques of the period. The mornings are welcomed with fresh coffee and a sure-to-please breakfast, complete with freshly baked pastries. The evenings are celebrated with a five-o’clock wine pour, served with a variety of fresh fruit and delicate cheeses in either the foyer or the welcoming front porch overlooking the intricate gardens designed by the late horticulturist Luther Burbank. H2 Hotel, also known by the locals as “h2o,” is one of Healdsburg’s newer hotels, and perfect for modern eco-conscious visitors to Healdsburg. The hotel is built to the standards of the LEED Gold Green building certification, and features 36 eco-chic rooms with private balconies, using sustainable materials for decor and creative amenities. Each room offers complementary flat and sparkling water that may be refilled on each floor. Of course, hydration is a must after a day of wine-tasting.

What is not to be missed is the hotel’s Spoonbar restaurant and bar, which has recently been named one of the top 100 Bay Area restaurants by the San Francisco Chronicle magazine’s food critic Michael Bauer. The seasonally changing menu is under the mastermind of Chef Louis Maldonado, who previously worked at San Francisco’s Fifth Floor and Aziza. Maldonado’s focus is heirloom grains dating back 100 years, seasonal vegetables, fresh meats that are paired perfectly with local wines and Spoonbar’s own extensive farm-tobar cocktails. One of Healdsburg’s few Greek and Mediterranean restaurants is Taverna Sofia, affectionately referred to by Chef Sofia Petridis-Lim as her “baby.” Chef Sofia’s menu is set by her passion for fresh local produce, imported herbs and spices that display the authentic dishes inspired by the culinary talents of her grandmother. A varying selection of locally baked breads, pastries, gyro dishes, melt-in–your-mouth lamb shank and spanakopita is sure to transport your senses to the salty air of the Mediterranean. If you happen to be in town during the last Saturday of the month, Chef Sofia hosts a live Greek- and bellydancing show, accompanied by live Greek music. This event has been known to book up quickly, so be sure to make reservations in advance and get ready to do some shimmying and hip-shaking. For the historical buff, two other absolute musts are the Healdsburg Museum and Historical Society and the Hand Fan Museum—the only one of its kind in the United States. The Healdsburg Museum resides in the former Healdsburg Carnegie Library, built in 1910. The museum displays the town’s historical collection of artifacts, unique to Healdsburg; much of the collection is due to the generous donations of local families. The museum pays tribute to the Pomo Indians, who were the initial inhabitants of the area before squatters of the 19th century asserted themselves when the Gold Rush winded down. The Hand Fan Museum is dedicated solely to hand fans from around the world. The exhibit boasts displays of jewel-encrusted, hand-painted and

gold-plated fans, to name a few beauts on display. The museum’s purpose is to provide enjoyment, and educational and cultural enrichment for visitors through the display of hand fans from every society around the world. After the history lesson is complete, a wine walk around Healdsburg Square is fun. Just a few paces from the Fan Museum a plethora of tasting rooms can be found, each as unique as the next. Make a point to drop by Portalupi Winery Tasting Room. Owners Tim Borges and Jane Portalupi’s inspiration comes from Jane’s “Nonna,” Marina Portalupi, an Italian immigrant from Piemonte, Italy. In her village Marina bottled her wines in milk jugs, and kept with the tradition once practiced in Northern California during the Prohibition era. Customers would arrive with empty milk bottles, and Nonna would fill them with her vino do tavola, kept in a hidden barrel at her grocery store— you could say Nonna was a bootlegger of sorts. You do not need to be a bootlegger, or know one, to get your fingerprints and taste buds all over owners Erica and Scott Lindstrom-Drake’s Thumbprint Cellars 2010 Climax, a Sonoma County Red Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Zinfandel, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Viognier, which is served at their tasting room located in the town’s square. Scott is the mastermind behind the crafting of each wine and it is his thumbprint that is emblazoned on the bottles. The tasting lounge is filled with ever-changing eclectic art pieces and epitomizes the essence of Thumbprint Cellars. Just off the town’s main square, Rosenblum Cellars Tasting Room offers one of the region’s best Zinfandel varietals, a smaller production of Rhonestyle wines and a new series of Bubbles. The tasting room encompasses a modern-chic lounge, with natural light pouring in, making it an inviting, spacious and ultra-cool space. A brief period of sunbathing can be enjoyed while sipping a fruit-forward glass of wine in the fully furnished patio. The 2010 Winemaker Select Zinfandel is a bottle that you will, without a doubt, wish to bring back from your trip featuring juicy, bold tannins and a dark cherry finish, it is a definitive representation of a damn good Zinfandel. A driving tour through the vineyards of Healdsburg is another destination essential that beckons the lover of wine and those with an agrarian soul to retreat to its majestic foothills with the lingering mist of morning fog, and damp nutrient-rich earth covered with vegetation. The deep-rooted connection between human beings and the earth is felt with each moment’s view of the panoramic landscape. Head out early to the steep rolling hillsides of Trattore Farms at the eastern end of Dry Creek Valley. Owner Tim Bucher’s inspiration for the name comes from an old red tractor transported from Europe. Bucher’s admiration for the craftsmanship of tractors is translated into his detailed commitment to producing a collection of wines and olive oils that pay tribute to rich farming traditions. The stone-strewn soils of the region mimic the terrains of the Côtes du Rhône region of France, yielding Petite Syrah, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Viognier and Zinfandel. Trattore Farms is also home to Dry

Creek Olive Company, where a seven-ton granite wheel is used to make olive oil, a tradition that dates back to the Greeks 5,000 years ago. Trattore is the only olive oil company in the region to use this ancient method of procuring oil from the olives. Bucher invites visitors to sip on estate wines, paired with unique olive oils and delicate food bites, at Trattore Farms. Many wineries are in pursuit of organic and biodynamic winemaking; however, one of Healdsburg’s truly eco-friendly wine experiences takes place at Quivira Vineyards and Winery in Dry Creek Valley, setting the standard for sustainable farming. Quivira brings in heirloom breed chickens, organic gardens, beehives and a wild pig to help create the ultimate ecosystem for crafting the best varietals. This type of agrarian practice has been the carefully crafted vision of Pete and Terri Kight, owners of Quivira. Their

vision of biodynamics entails organic farming practices that focus on proactive sustainability through biodiversity. Quivira’s romantic views of Mount St. Helena and vineyards stretching to the horizon make it a perfect spot to enjoy an afternoon picnic while sipping on Quivira’s signature Dry Creek Valley 2011 Zinfandel. This perfectly balanced wine has a mid-palate density, just the right amount of acidity, and an indulgent mix of dark berries and subtle spice that make this red oh-so complete. Jordan Winery, a 1,200-acre estate located in the Alexander Valley, should be included in any wine tour of Healdsburg. CEO John Jordan’s innovative practices have brought about a new wine-tasting event for visitors. During the Estate Tour & Tasting experience guests are taken on a three-hour excursion in a custom Mercedes Sprinter to revel in the resplendent winery, bursting at the seams with wildlife, lush vineyards and fertile gardens. Guests are taken to the remote destination of Jordan Estates and at each stop they view the natural beauty of its countryside. Food and wine pairings prepared by Chef Todd Knoll, using ingredients brought in from the chef’s garden, are showcased at each stop. The tour includes the current release of the winery’s two varietals—Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Healdsburg’s beauty lies in the very earth that fills the lungs with each breath, the warmth of the golden California sun, the sprawling emeraldgreen expanses touched by the morning dew and the air fragrant with blossoms of citrus trees. The vitality of the countryside owes its existence to the locals who have put their very hearts and souls into the terrain comprised of the valleys, creeks and rolling hills of a wine country that has preserved its integrity as a delightful agrarian town replete with luxurious wonders.

ROAD TO SUCCESS San Diego Broker Jake May shares his journey to the good life.
J
ake May is a really funny guy. We stood on the tarmac at McClellan-Palomar Airport admiring a Phenom 100—a private aircraft he knows in great detail—though his appreciation for luxury is certainly not a deterrent of quick wit in between poses. Whether dressed in a tailored suit or his favorite jeans and Puma sneakers (May’s preferred attire), you can bet he’s making someone laugh—or, better yet, himself—empowered by a successful career and social ease that quite simply can’t be taught. May’s got a lot to smile about these days. With more than 500 real-estate transactions processed in the last five years, May’s next destination is an event horizon. With the intention of expanding his real-estate ventures further throughout the luxury North County coastal market, Jake May knows exactly where he is going. The San Diego native has led a “blessed” life. Mike MacIntosh, senior pastor of Horizon Christian Fellowship, Larry Peltier, pastor of Encinitas Beach Chapel (formerly known as El Camino Christian Fellowship, where May currently serves), and Miles McPherson, pastor of The Rock Church, are three names that roll in close succession to Mays’ after the time he spent as a pastor at Horizon Christian Fellowship in San Diego. May’s career ambitions have coalesced—his relationship with God the hallmark of his success. Real estate and ACN, a direct marketing company specializing in telecom, energy and essential services, have served May well—the result of which is his personal paradise. A sense of gratitude rests plainly on his sleeve as he acknowledges his journey through faith, with his family and friends, and his professional desire to help people obtain their dreams in home ownership and more. May smiles, showing all of his teeth as he describes his love of golf. He plays a few times a week, mostly at Rancho Santa Fe Farms where he is a member. May laughs as he continues to explain that he also “sucks” at his favorite pastime. But motivation is often more revealing than skill level—something I got the sense he knew a lot about. He shared a quote from the late George Stahlman, a close friend: “Jake, remember this: early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise.”
FINE: What is your greatest motivation? JM: “My family and my faith. Helping people is my greatest motivation and nothing is more important than home.” What has been your greatest business challenge? “During the downturn of the economy, and watching 60

clients, agents and broker friends struggle and lose their jobs—nothing was worse than seeing people lose their ability to pay their bills and provide for their family.” How do you define success? “That’s easy, right? God. When everyone is happy—when everyone is satisfied, that’s success. Amen!”
What’s your new destination? “My plan is to push the economy towards creating new jobs with the gifts God has given me—to continue to be a positive influence in the community and within my family.” Travel is not always about where you are going and the destination not always a physical place. For those
who work hard and persevere through adversity, the destination is really the journey—a state of mind, rather than a state of being somewhere at some particular time. “The reason I’ve achieved great success is simple. I always kept my clients’ needs before my own,” said May. Success is made throughout a journey. facebook.com/FINEmagazines | FINEsd.com

These restaurants offer epicurean creations and worldly cuisine in San Diego. BY MARIA DESIDERATA MONTANA

any of San Diego’s best restaurants offer an authentic and regional cuisine that you might discover while traveling around the world. Now you can forget the expensive plane ticket and enjoy some worldly cuisine just minutes away. Whether it’s a highend restaurant boasting a legendary cuisine or an easygoing neighborhood kitchen focused on traditional fare, you’ll discover some intriguing epicurean creations from certain San Diego chefs focused on sweet and savory dishes while others emphasize a high level of spice. Venture out and aim high; you might discover you’re a true gourmand at heart.
ISABEL’S CANTINA Although most of Proprietor and Chef Isabel Cruz’s restaurants are similar to each other, they still encompass their own individuality. Isabel’s Cantina has a nice neighborhood feel, is big enough to get a table, but small enough to receive good personal service. Chef Cruz tries to create a healthy cuisine, focusing on authentic homestyle Latin food filled with both bold and subtle flavors. Never formally trained in the kitchen, she says she had the good fortune of having some amazing people in her life who introduced her to new food and flavor combinations. “I truly feel that all my many wonderful culinary influences and experiences show up on each plate we serve,” she says. “There’s absolutely nothing else I’d rather be doing with my life than continually exploring food.” Offering diverse menus, Chef Cruz believes that one of the most important things she does is seek out as many local and sustainable ingredients as possible. Isabel’s Cantina She has a sustainable farm in Sandy, Oregon, where she sources some of her produce, especially for her Portland restaurant. isabelscantina.com

FINCH’S WINE BAR & BISTRO Opened by the Ravden family in 2010, this intimate wine bar and elegant European-style bistro showcases an eclectic international gourmet menu by Executive Chef Mario Medina, who was born and raised in Mexico City. With an adventurous and ever-changing menu that features a mix of family recipes and unique dishes with an international flair that the Ravden’s discovered on their travels, the overall guiding spirit of Finch’s is that it’s a true gourmet dining experience at casual dining prices. “Working with talented chefs in different cuisines and techniques has opened my eyes to a wide range of both products and cooking styles,” says Chef Medina. “I have taken the various techniques I have learned under great chefs and have made them my own; they fit my personality and style. I always keep in mind what our guests will enjoy and like the most—not just the cooking but the presentation as well.” finchslajolla.com
CRUSH ITALIAN CUISINE AND LOUNGE In 2011, Executive Chef Jason Colabove, John Luciano, Doug Guillion and Carson Wellman expanded the Crush family to Solana Beach. The restaurant is an extension of a sister restaurant of the same name that has been delighting diners in Chico, California, for four years. A partner in the Chico operation, John Luciano is a longtime San Diego resident and president of Luciano Development Inc., who wanted to share the incomparable Crush dining and drinking experience with his own local community. This Solana Beach gem has quickly Crush become a coastal dining standout. Chef Colabove developed the menu and combines traditional Southern Italian flavors and cooking techniques with fresh, local and organic ingredients to create bright and flavorful
dishes that are wholly satisfying. In addition, Crush features craft cocktails, local breweries and an extensive list of wines from all over the world. In December 2012, Crush expanded yet again and opened Crush Ukiah in Mendocino County, just north of Napa Valley. Nobu San Diego solanabeachcrush.com

MUZITA ABYSSINIAN BISTRO Throw away the fork and use your hands—the traditional way! Whether you’re in the mood for casual dining or a special occasion, this popular eatery is an unforgettable neighborhood hideaway serving authentic Eritrean/ Ethiopian cuisine. From the African music and East African decor to the aroma of spices and homemade Muzita Abyssinian Bistro cooking, you have the choice of dining inside or on the cozy outdoor patio. The atmosphere is lively and authentic, complete with a knowledgeable wait staff that will guide you through the menu. Abel Woldemichael and his wife own the restaurant and the recipes are from his mother. “We all cook together here as a family, with some great assistance from the kitchen crew,” he says. Don’t miss specialties including Sambusas— homemade stuffed crispy pastries—or the Beggie Kilwa— sautéed New Zealand Leg of Lamb. My personal favorite is the hamli, which is a nice blend of braised spinach and collard greens. Diners can also opt to share large platters of food, served family style. Impressive beverage selections include a traditional fermented honey wine that is sweet, but goes well with the spiciness of the foods, or choose an icecold Ethiopian beer. letseat.at/muzita.com

Apparent among Executive Chef Jose Duran’s many strengths in the kitchen is his impressive continuity. Having been with Casa Guadalajara since its inception, Chef Duran has kept his trademark cooking style consistent throughout the years, preserving dishes that have been longtime favorites as well as developing new ones, all the while maintaining the same high standards and delicious flavors for which he has become well known. Guest favorites include the Grilled Fish Tacos, Carnitas Mole Enchiladas and the Ultimate Green Burrito. casaguadalajara.com
