PUBLISHER’S LETTER

W

e all take things for granted. Here is San Diego, it’s especially easy to take for granted the simple pleasure of being outside—feeling the sun on your face, the wind in your hair as you drive with the windows down. It’s a big beautiful world out there and San Diegans just so happen to live in a particularly beautiful corner of it. This is the time of year we most enjoy family and friends as the season calls for memorable traditions: outdoor entertaining, the beach, sunsets. A year passes by too quickly to ever forget the smells and sounds of summer so take a step back, and take it all in. The art, photography and stories within this issue naturally evolved to both celebrate and appreciate the great outdoors. We learned to create more beautiful outdoor living spaces, where to dine al fresco, and go explore sexy swimwear fashions. We also got nostalgic with country inspired fashions for this month’s fashion feature utilizing some of San Diego’s own local fashion boutiques and salons. Wishing you a memorable summer,

Masters of the

Finest Waterkeepers of the future: Elite Finish Detailing. B y J e a n n e F e r r is

26

FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines

T

here’s a new kid in town…two actually. And they’re really not that new. But they are masters of the FINEST and Waterkeepers of the future. Pioneering a grassroots campaign of a waterless car wash coupled with the applied artistry of “nano-particles of silica”, an innovative coating known as, C.Quartz FINEST®, these master detailers have become the ‘go-to’ for exclusive show room, high performance automobiles and private, luxury car enthusiasts. Elite Finish Detailing (EFD) is a mobile, luxury automobile finish and detailing service. They are also the top CarPro Authorized FINEST Installers of C.Quartz FINEST®, here in San Diego, and perhaps soon to be in the Western Region. They have consistently produced a paint protection finish so glossy and wet, Queen Maleficent would kill for a manicure with it. Candy apple red never looked so delicious. The specification of FINEST’s components is the language of a quantum physicist. For example, water contact angle: 100-110°; sliding angle: 15-25°; heat resistance: beyond 575° F and explanations like Mohs hardness up to 2H may not sound exciting but it is guaranteed to put a gleam in Daddy’s eye when he sees his own reflection glinting on the hood of his ride—even in the rain. Eco-technology hasn’t just made strides with an all-electric vehicle—owner Wes Walz, and co-founder Jason Leonardo, of EFD have created with a chemist a revolutionary waterless car wash product called the Waterless Mist™. This periwinkle solution only consumes 16 ounces of water to clean one car. “This defies the usual 50 plus gallons of water the “hand wash” car wash center consumes for each car,” Walz said. “Unfortunately, in order to preserve car paint, it needs to be clean water and most facilities use recycled water which is the worst for paint.”

“And if you are using that much clean water for a car—it becomes counterintuitive to being green,” added Leonardo. “Our goal is to preserve the waterways as much as possible. That’s part of our passion here—zero wastewater and zero run off.” In addition to “jewelling the paint” to eco-friendly perfection, EFD offers D.I.Y clinics for car buffs and custom tailored professional mentoring programs. “Since finishing and detailing our first Tesla in 2012 with FINEST,” Walz continued, “We have entered a new high level niche that has created a following for us, especially by other detailers all over the country, which in turn, we have developed into a mentoring program.” Henry Hernandez, a current mentee, comes down from Los Angeles once a week and has done so for the last few months. “Wes is a great teacher,” Hernandez said. “He is patient and knowledgeable. I’ve learned a lot.” Hernandez is in training with EFD’s products and environmental policies with the hopes to hang out his own shingle. Also community endorsed, EFD lays claim to more than 45, five-star customer reviews on Yelp, however, adding the more recent reviews is still on the ‘to do’ list because business has been thriving. One little glass bottle of the FINEST is coincidentally about the same cost and quantity for many imported beauty serums. The difference being, one bottle can physically protect two cars and it is not available on the open market. Nano-technology protecting paint? Perhaps, the frontier of the fragile epidermis will be soon to follow? The C.Quartz FINEST “Dream” detail package starts at $3k. “People often mistake us for an auto body shop and we always make time for suggestions and referrals,” said Walz. “No one is turned away but we are craftsmen of restoration and preservation rather than repair…and making first impressions last.” Spoken like a true master of the Finest.

beyond, the Hamilton Cove villas provide all the comforts of home, plus the luxury of exclusivity on the island. These rentals are actual condominium residences that private owners rent out through CIVR when not in use. This offers vacationers a great alternative to a hotel room, especially when you have a family or larger group and would benefit from key amenities like a full kitchen, full-size bathrooms and bedrooms, separate living room (with pull out sofa), multiple bedrooms for greater privacy, wood-burning fireplace, free Wi-Fi and, in many units, additional personal leisure-time touches like satellite TV, board games and books. M
ost of the properties also include laundry facilities to keep that suitcase fresh as well as housekeeping services that can be arranged by request in addition to the initial complimentary start-up service applied before your arrival. Notably, CIVR also includes a golf cart with every villa rental.
 “
Vacation rentals are a great option for travelers [and are] becoming more and more popular as they provide a great experience for vacationing together,” noted Denny Honsey, General Manager of CIVR. Because Hamilton Cove is a private community only accessible to those staying at the location, there are additional amenities that are only accessible to guests. These include croquet, tennis, pool, tub, and a private beach. Making a home away from home has certainly never been easier with these luxury villa rentals on Catalina Island. Catalina Island offers a vacation combination of natural beauty, fun activities, fine dining and accommodation options replete with amenities.

“Vacation rentals are a great option for travelers [and are] becoming more and more popular as they provide a great experience for vacationing together.”

THE AUDI EFFECT

Shedding new light on the luxury daily driver.

Y

ou may want to reevaluate your latest auto crush this summer in time for Audi’s R8 LMX groundbreaking summer debut. A leader in developing automotive lighting technology, Audi has released a series of production cars boasting the more advanced lighting features. From equipping the Audi R8 with all LED headlights in 2008 and innovating dynamic turn signals in 2012, to launching a new chapter in automotive lighting with its Matrix LED headlights in 2014, Audi continues to defy the lighting game. The next evolution for Audi: the laser spot for high beams. By increasing range and safety substantially, the laser high beams have transformed the limited edition R8 LMX into a pioneer of unprecedented technology and breathtaking performance. (continued on page 36)

The Audi R8 LMX is available as a coupe with a production run limited to 99 vehicles.

MAKING IT HAPPEN The Audi engineers work very closely with their racing colleagues on the development of lighting technologies. The combination of LED and laser high beams, for example, was used for the first time on the new Audi R18 e tron quattro at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 14 and 15. The premium brand is thus continuing its tradition of using racing to test new technologies destined for production. “Audi has long dominated the most important 24-hour race,” said Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member for Technical Development. “In addition to the outstanding TDI drive technology, a maximum light yield gives our pilots a major advantage, and with night racing in particular is a key factor to our success.”

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS Thanks to the new laser high beams, one laser module per headlight creates a cone of light with twice the range of the all-LED headlight. Each module encompasses four high power diodes, which generate a blue laser beam with a wavelength of 450 nanometers. With the help of a phosphor converter, the beam is transformed into roadworthy white light with a color temperature of 5,500 Kelvin—ideal conditions for the human eye, enabling the driver to recognize contrast more easily and even preventing fatigue

36

while driving. Active at speeds of about 37 mph and above, the laser spot supplements the LED high beam in the R8 LMX while significantly enhancing visibility and safety. Going above and beyond, the R8 LMX engineers also equipped the car with an intelligent camera-based sensor system, which detects other road users and actively adjusts the light pattern to exclude them.

FRESH, CUTTING-EDGE DESIGN The Audi R8 is the most dynamic, top of the line Audi model ever designed. Its high-revving, mid mounted engine, double wishbone suspension and Audi Space Frame truly embrace the essence of racing. The Audi R8 LMX is available as a coupe with a production run limited to 99 vehicles. It features a 5.2 liter, V10 engine, accelerating the LMX from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. With a top speed of 200 mph, the supercar has an average of 18.8 miles per gallon of fuel.

HITTING THE STREETS The Audi R8 LMX offers breathtaking performance and revolutionary technology, being the first production car in the world to come equipped with laser high beams. The limited-edition vehicle is making its summer debut, with a base price of €210,000 in Germany or about $285,000 in the United States.

A unique Military and Veterans Recognition Day at The San Diego Polo Club. B y W hit n e y B ut l e r

O

n September 7, philanthropy and polo will join hands for a unique Military and Veterans Recognition Day at The San Diego Polo Club. Steve Lewandowski, polo club announcer and Navy veteran, began this tradition almost ten years ago, serving also as the business development officer of this year’s participating charity, Veterans Research Alliance (VRA). “San Diego has long been known as a military town,” said Lewandowski. “And with good cause. We have a veteran population of 250,000 and we’re also the largest disembarkation area in the country for returning vets from Iraq and Afghanistan. I think that we have a special obligation to them.” On Military and Veterans Recognition Day at The San Diego Polo Club, all active duty military and veterans will enjoy free admission in recognition for their service to our country. The event will include a presentation by military color guard

for the national anthem, along with a flag ceremony carried by members of local charity, The San Diego Nice Guys, as well as members of Encinitas American Legion Post 416. “At the VRA, we believe that men and women who so bravely served our country deserve the best clinical health care available,” said Lewandowski. “The Veterans Health Administration provides services to veterans who deal with unique health challenges like PTSD, Traumatic brain injury, prosthetics, as well as heart disease and diabetes for our aging veterans.” The mission of the VRA is to fund innovative, life saving research that leads to increased health improvements and long term medical cures for one of the largest veteran populations in the country. Special VIP tickets will be available for $50 on the day of the event. A live auction will be held after the first game at approximately 2:30p.m.. This year, exhibitors premiered their innovations and novelties to international press, buyers, agents and enthusiastic collectors. The economic impact is enormous. For example, The Swiss watch industry, 95% of which is represented at Baselworld, had exports of approximately 21.8 billion Swiss francs in 2013. While innovation was abundant, particular trends appeared at this year’s luxury showcase. The bar was considerably raised for watch manufacturers as industry leaders introduced more complicated movements, new advancements in time-telling technology, and some of the most stunning horological concepts the market has ever seen. The material on everyone’s mind in the watch industry was ceramic. This imperishable material is both sleek and exclusive, and requires the same high-level of craftsmanship as do the most coveted precious gems. When asked about what the show means to his company, Stephane Linder, Tag Heuer CEO said, “This is the only show of the year where we see all our retailers and our agents in the space of a few days, the only venue where we feel the pulse of the market in the ‘blink of an eye’. In addition, it is a wonderful platform for communication.” Over the years, Baselworld has evolved into a superlative event. For the watchmaking and jewelry industry, Baselworld has become an indispensable platform for the latest products and innovations.

TOP: The Breitling Navitimer 01 (46mm) is a large format that accentuates its presence on the wrist and enhances the originality of its design, while optimizing readability. RIGHT: As timepieces become more and more complex, displaying their movement components in elaborate dials, it is refreshing to see a watch make a high visual impact by highlighting a sleek and classic appearance. The Executive Dual Time by Ulysse Nardin accomplishes this skillfully, creating a watch that is not only technologically advanced, but aesthetically stunning.

Selling the Stage Celebrity home stager Meridith Baer shares 10 outdoor staging tips. B y M e r idith B a e r

t’s the best time of year to put your house on the market. Long summer days give a property more time in the beauty of twilight to capture the imaginations of buyers. Staging is an important part of making a distinctive first impressions, and whether showing a multi-million dollar property or not, buyers should be engaged the second they pull up to the driveway. High profile stager, Meridith Baer of Meridith Baer Home, knows that the outdoor space of a home is the most important part of that first impression. Baer recently staged Matthew Perry’s home in Malibu, and although he had the beautiful Pacific ocean as his backdrop, Baer still managed to create an outdoor space that looked unique and elegant.

10 outdoor staging tips from Meridith Baer Think of the outdoor as you think about the indoor and divide the space into rooms. What will you be doing in each room? If you have the space, create a dining room and living room. The furnishings should relate to what you will be doing in each space. Buyers will flock to where you create an inviting scenario. Put two chairs and a little drinks table in an area that no one uses and suddenly you have a new room. Find unusual objects at flea markets and place them outside as points of interest. Stone animals, metal forms. I even put a new wood statue outside so it would age and look like an antique. Make every area you see from the inside look special.

Shooting LA - Michael Namara

Look out every window and create the painting that you want to see every day. Pick up interesting planters when you find them and create groups of them to define spaces.

Outdoor Décor

Durability intersects design for comfortable outdoor living. B y M a r g e B itetti

O

utdoor living in Southern California is a way of life. The outdoor space needs to be comfortable and eye-catching for a variety of entertainment occasions. An outdoor space should also reflect the character of the home and the personality of the homeowner. While home exteriors follow similar interior design rules, they do pose durability challenges. Withstanding the sun, rain, wind, occasional bugs, pollen and tree sap, are just a few of the dangers that await in the great outdoors. Natural wood products are perhaps the most enduring for use in an outdoor space. The most desired and weather resistant woods are teak, redwood, cypress and cedar. Teak products develop a gray patina, providing additional character over time. Most wood items used outdoors require wood treatment to extend their life. Other popular materials for outdoor spaces include rattan, wicker and synthetic wicker made of resin materials. Steel and wrought iron are often used in exteriors but over time will rust if not repainted and weather-proofed regularly. Lower-end outdoor furnishings are often made of aluminum and plastics. These items are functional but typically do not make bold design statements. They also tend to be less durable and often look nice for a few summer seasons before they wear out. Fabric selections for exteriors are considerable, ranging from low-cost vinyl materials to high-end spun polyesters, olefin and acrylics. The fabric selected for the outdoors should be breathable, water resistant, UV resistant, abrasion resistant, colorfast and easily cleaned. The exterior color palette should be influenced by the natural surroundings, be it ocean, mountains, desert or countryside. Solution-dyed acrylic fiber offers a natural look and feel while polymers are resistant to ultraviolet deterioration. For

52

FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines

a lasting appearance, colors should be spun into the fibers of the yarn itself and not layered on the top of the fabric. Sunbrella is a popular brand of outdoor fabrics. Mike Bowman of Patio Productions in San Diego (http:// www.patioproductions.com) said, “Sunbrella is really great and we’re proud to offer it with our furniture…While Sunbrella fabrics are very stain resistant, they are not completely stainproof and so it is recommended that you treat your outdoor furnishings like any other piece of furniture in your home.” When outdoor furniture is delivered be sure to complete and return the warranty card. Often there is a separate card included for the fabric. Most outdoor fabrics are not completely water proof especially when left out in a rain storm. If this happens water will eventually get into the cushions, buildup moisture, and cause fabrics to mold. If possible, bring the items or the cushions inside in bad weather. Bowman of Patio Productions shared further thoughts on what people might look for when shopping for their outdoor spaces. “In San Diego, we deal with a couple of unique environmental qualities,” said Bowman. “For one, we have so many sunny days that sun damage and color fading are serious issues. The other unique environmental quality we contend with is the saline content of our air, because we get so much saltwater evaporating off the ocean…So with our own line of furniture, Harmonia Living, we set out to address these two issues head-on while still delivering a product that is very aesthetically pleasing.” The selections for outdoor living are extensive and worth investigating over particular needs and outdoor challenges. Before making a final selection you should do careful planning about color, design, fabric and the type of entertaining you might do, further showcasing your home and personal style.

WINE & DINE dining out

Enjoy these restaurants al fresco style. B y M a r i a D eside r a t a M o n t a n a

I

nvariably one of the oldest and most revered epicurean traditions, open air dining is an experience for the senses, focused on blending the natural environment into a meal. Our moderate southern California climate is the perfect setting, no matter what time of the year. Even during cooler fall and winter evenings, most patios have heat lamps or light covers to keep the chill away. San Diego is certainly synonymous with outdoor dining, and these fine dining examples are great options for enjoying a meal al fresco.

Eddie V’s La Jolla Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, an upscale seafood and steak restaurant, has two decks overlooking the La Jolla Cove. If you’re in the mood for patio dining, this is certainly one of the most spectacular locations in southern California, with 180 degree unobstructed views of the La Jolla cliffs and Pacific Ocean. Enjoy a beautiful sunset while indulging in the freshest prime seafood and hand-cut steaks from the finest, specialty-aged, USDA center-cut beef available. Flavorful dishes include Wild Mushroom Salad with hot goat cheese, arugula and champagne vinaigrette, Cold Water Maine Lobster Tails and Chilean Sea Bass steamed “Hong Kong style” with light soy broth. Choose from more than 200 world-class wines in a setting that’s relaxed, refined and filled with the rhythms of nightly live music from the V Lounge. Guests can always count on Eddie V’s commitment to the best quality seafood and steaks, and the restaurant’s superior customer service. (continued on page 68)

Tom Ham’s lighthouse Nestled at the far west end of Harbor island, Tom Ham’s Lighthouse has been in business for over forty years, and is considered one of the more prominent architectural landmarks on San Diego Bay. Recently renovated to enhance every square foot, guests can enjoy newly expanded views of downtown San Diego, Coronado and Point Loma from the indoor dining room and beautiful outdoor patio. “During the day there are a variety of ships and sailboats, and at night the lights of the downtown city skyline are amazing,” said executive chef, Lance Repp. With a new menu based heavily on seafood with Mediterranean influences, there are other options, including dry-aged steaks, pork belly and duck. “We use as much local produce and sustainable seafood as we can, including local fishing boats for our day-boat dishes. Almost everything is made in house,” explained Repp. “We also have 32 taps on hand, as we are constantly rotating through local craft brews.” Sunday Brunch is nearly filled to capacity every week, as diners wander through endless options ranging from traditional breakfast items to mounds of fresh seafood chilled on ice. Now owned and operated by the second generation of Ham’s, the tradition of exceptional cuisine continues with a modern edge to provide a memorable experience.

Hacienda De Vega

Tom Ham’s Lighthouse

Hacienda de Vega Located at the south end of the Escondido, in San Diego’s North County Inland, Hacienda de Vega is nestled in an original adobe home dating back to the 1930s. The 1.6acre Hacienda features an incredible outdoor dining patio surrounded by a lavish landscape with tropical flowers and complete with its own ponds and waterfalls. At the heart of this Hacienda is the Mexican kitchen, a place where friends and family are brought together to share foods and spices that are turned into great feasts. The cuisine offers a taste of regional cuisines of México from both past and

present. The food is deeply rooted in family tradition and the menu features the native cuisine of the Aztecs complete with recipes brought over by the Spanish Conquistadors in 1492. Some recipes have changed with time while others have remained unchanged for over 500 years. From the pleasures of antojitos with their different salsas and cheeses, to the enjoyment of elaborate guisos, with their adobos, moles and recados, this authentic Mexican has two main objectives: to nourish the body and to satisfy the soul. Truly a lavish patio experience with deep roots in southern California tradition.

Rancho Santa Fe Bistro Located in the heart of downtown Rancho Santa Fe, this village eatery has undergone several changes since restauranteur Mozy Jahanguiri purchased the space in January 2013. Aside from changing the name and menu, the beautiful outdoor patio has been transformed into a unique garden canopy, where guests can enjoy cool summer salads of spinach, arugula, goat cheese and cranberries, or something more substantial—slow cooked beef short ribs; grilled Norwegian salmon with caper sauce or Jidori chicken piccata. The newly installed wood wine cellar houses more than 2,000 bottles of French and America wines, the perfect accompaniment to any number of the Bistro’s creations from the brunch or dinner menu. Outstanding

customer service and the simplicity of delicious food and wine are a testament to Jahanguiri’s longstanding career in the restaurant industry and his passion for serving others.

ith summer in the air, I’m yearning for strawberries hand-picked from a local farm or fresh from the farmers market. These luscious strawberries taste even sweeter when roasted with balsamic vinegar and paired with a creamy mascarpone filling. Thinking about strawberries always makes me think about warm biscuits, the kind that lures my family into the kitchen on Sunday mornings. Even if you’ve never made a homemade biscuit in your life, I urge you to give my recipe a try. I’ve added fresh chopped rosemary and orange zest to these biscuits, but in the past I’ve added anything from chocolate chips and walnuts, to crumbly pieces of bacon and cheddar cheese. Be adventurous, and don’t be afraid to experiment with your favorite ingredients. Buon Appetito!

Add Mascarpone, whipping cream, vanilla and powdered sugar to a large mixing bowl and beat at high speed until stiff peaks form. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Add 4 tablespoons butter to a glass baking dish. Heat in oven until butter is melted, then remove dish from oven. Rinse strawberries and remove stems. Cut strawberries in half and place in a large bowl. Add balsamic vinegar and brown sugar. Toss gently. Add strawberries to the baking dish with butter. Gently coat strawberries with the butter mixture. Place dish back into the oven and bake for 15 minutes. Remove strawberries from oven and let cool. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder and

salt. Cut 1 stick of butter into slices and add to the dry mixture, continuously breaking up the butter with a fork or hard spatula until the flour is crumbly. Slowly add milk while stirring with a fork until the mix forms soft dough. Add orange zest and rosemary, and gently knead into dough with your fingers (don’t over-knead the dough.) Take the ball of dough out of the bowl and, with your hands, flatten into a 1-inch-thick loaf on a cutting board. Slice the loaf into 10 to 12 square biscuits and arrange on a nonstick cooking sheet. Place into a 450-degree oven and bake for approximately 8 to 10 minutes, or until the biscuits turn slightly brown on the top. Remove from oven. Slice biscuits in half and fill with mascarpone cream mixture. Spoon strawberry filling on top of mascarpone mixture. Top with the remaining biscuit halves.
