From a fast-paced zip line tour, thrilling ATV adventures of a beautiful hidden river and waterfall basin, to exciting expeditions through the rainforest, exploring your wild side in Puerto Vallarta just got easier. Zip through 12 different lines that fly directly above the amazing rainforest located in the Sierra Madre Mountains to heights as high as 709 feet. Each zip line ends on a large platform that gives you the opportunity to enjoy the surroundings and take memorable photos. At the end of the tour, travel by mule back up the mountain to the point of origination. The river expedition is definitely designed for both nature lovers and adrenaline seekers. These adventures start on the coastline of Rio Cuale and take a six-hour journey through the remarkable rainforest of the Sierra Madre Mountains. This journey is only meant for true thrill seekers looking for the thrill of a lifetime. Lacking the daredevil aptitude for zip lining or expedition? An ATV tour provides an amazing experience at a pace suitable for most adventure seekers. These tours are great for those with even little or no ATV experience. This 60-minute thrill ride will take you on a journey through the Sierra Madre Mountains. Stop at several prime locations to take in the natural beauty this area has to offer, from stunning flora and incredible wildlife, to mountainous vistas and beyond. Halfway through the tour, the experienced guide will take you to Piletas, one of the most beautiful hidden treasures. This location will reward you the opportunity to experience a breathtaking waterfall and on
some occasions, a swim in the pristine waters. After returning from any of these adrenaline tours, thrill seekers can dine at the breathtaking, on-site Los Coapinoles Restaurant to complement any of these adventures. Guests can also participate in one of the greatest tequila tastings in the area.
RHYTHMS OF THE NIGHT Rhythms of the Night is an immersive dinner show experience like none other—transforming your day into an enchanted evening. The experience begins with a relaxing cruise across the Banderas Bay where complimentary snacks and cocktails are served. Enjoy a stunning light display along the coastline, as the sun sets and the moon starts to rise. As the cruise ship ports at the secluded Las Caletas cove, guests are greeted by a beautiful starry night, a torch–lit pathway, and mysterious islanders. The fire-lit path leads to an exceptionally romantic outdoor dining area along the coast. Nature is the perfect setting to this dining experience, as a breeze from the Pacific Ocean blows through the decorative palm trees. Light from the torches and candles scattered about flicker on the water. The sounds of night are intertwined with tableside serenades from talented musicians wandering through the dining area. The atmosphere alone transforms dinner
into a mesmerizing experience. Guests are treated to a full-service buffet that includes thoughtfully prepared food selections to accommodate any dietary preference. The buffet includes grilled chicken, fish and steak, along with a delicious display of vegetables, salads, and of course, hand-made tortillas prepared exhibition style. The dessert buffet is equally tantalizing, with pies, rice pudding, and brownies among the many offerings. After dinner, enjoy an outdoor amphitheater where talented local artists perform a variety of theatrical performance including, acrobatics, dance, song, comedy, all with magnificent costuming. The performance proudly reenacts some of the ancient customs that highlight the rich history of this region. Overall, this enthralling evening offers the opportunity to have a relaxing yet exciting night filled with sights, sounds, smells and tastes not soon forgotten. Whether you’re looking for a romantic dinner for two, a fun-filled family adventure, or are planning a group event, an evening with Rhythms of the Night is a magical journey sure to impress. So however you vacation in Puerto Vallarta make sure to include activities that will get your heart pumping. The Mitchell Thorp Foundation launches inaugural charity fashion event to support families in need. BY BALKIS NASERY
S
taying stylish isn’t always about walking a runway. Trends come and go, but the spirit of giving is always in vogue. The Mitchell Thorp Foundation, in collaboration with FINE magazine, is preparing for the inaugural Under the Tuscan Sun Charity Event, “Pillars of Hope” scheduled to debut Sept. 6, 2014. The “Pillar of Hope” award ceremony will honor top practitioners, therapists, educators, and doctors, who act as beacons of strength throughout the communities they serve. Professionals of each field are chosen for their extraordinary service, advanced treatments, and spreading human values that encourage hope and faith to patients. Honorees of the evening include Dr. Mark Drucker, MD Center for Advanced Medicine, Dr. Seth Pransky, MD Rady’s Children Hospital, Kim Schulte, CN, Biodynamic Wellness and Ruth Westreich, President of the Westreich Foundation. Tuscan-inspired cuisine and wine will gently nuance an Italian summer at the beautiful outdoor venue in Ciello Village, Rancho Santa Fe. Notable vendors from the health and beauty industry will be showcasing goods and services while guests enjoy live entertainment. A couture men and women’s fashion show will be the apex of the evening— highlighting trends for the coming season and helpful tips. Founders Beth and Brad Thorp started The Mitchell Thorp Foundation after losing their son Mitchell to an ongoing battle with an undiagnosed illness. Despite their devastation, the couple was not without faith. Their experience with Mitchell inspired strength to help other families going through similar hardship. “The pain doesn’t go away,” said Beth. “And the walk we went down, nobody can imagine. But you take that grief and turn it into something beautiful.”

The Mitchell Thorp Foundation is just that—something beautiful—supporting and advocating for families whose children suffer from life threatening illnesses, diseases and disorders. “When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening condition it puts tremendous amounts of stress on the family. 24/7 care and hardship become a way of life.” Brad said. “Our purpose is to bring a sense of normalcy into their home environment and ease the family’s journey by providing them with medical and home assistance and our healing and wellness programs. The foundation’s primary mission is to provide emotional, financial and resource support for the whole family through our programs. “We pay the vendors directly to ensure the child’s needs are met.” said Brad. “We believe when communities of willing and giving hearts come together, miracles happen.” Through the foundation’s charitable donations, MTF has assisted numerous families in serious need. The goal of this inaugural event is to further raise awareness and create support for the foundation’s effort to expand the current assistance programs. Beth and Brad have become emotional anchors for families through their perseverance. They’ve supported parents in solidarity during somber moments inside the ICU. It is through the memory of their son Mitchell that they find strength to share with others. The families assisted by MTF become a part of the couple’s extended family. “We have walked the walk with them,” said Beth. “And they have become our network and new support system for other families.” To donate or register for the “Pillars of Hope” Charity Fashion show event visit www.mitchellthorp.org/events

Though Shuruk is an accomplished designer and renovator, it was surprising to learn more about his experiences on the new reality television show, and also his life. Shuruk grew up in Tel Aviv, Israel, for the first 29 years of his life. Arriving in the United States with only $400 in his pocket, the young man had found his new home. When Shuruk came to San Diego, he fell in love with the surf, view, cuisine, and decided to bring his most loved hobby, renovating, to the States. Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Ralph Lauren, and Herb Ritz, all share a special place in Shuruk’s heart, inspiring him to become a Renaissance man himself. “Clean, classy, and traditional” are three words Shuruk likes to keep in mind when flipping a home. Shuruk’s passion developed at the age of ten, after minor damage to his home kitchen in Israel lead to an entire renovation. Renovating gave him a comfort place different from when he was a paratrooper for the IDF in Tel Aviv. His talents and eye for detail lead him to attend Golden State Contractors School and School of Visual Arts, in New York City. The 38 year old exceeded the expectations of many and decided to then establish his own company, THE BULL CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, named after his stubbornness and determination. In addition to establishing a successful business, Shuruk is also an established model, yogi, and dancer. Shuruk models for San Diego Model Management and has worked for G-belts. Additionally, Shuruk is a developing photographer and has his works on The Avangelista. He is also a committed yogi, having renovated Pura Vida studio where he regularly exercises. The fitness The crew from Brother vs. Brother. guru can also be seen every Wednesday dancing salsa at Cafe Sevilla Nightclub in Downtown San Diego. Staying healthy and fitness is of much importance to Shuruk, who makes it his priority to always have a healthy diet and look his best. “One of my goals in life is to help make the people around me better and healthier,” he said. Downtown San Diego is Shuruk’s playground. He loves grabbing a drink at Herringbone in La Jolla where he can take off his shoes and relax near the coast. Shuruk resides in Claremont, but can usually be found walking around the Gaslamp Quarter listening to Al Green, or drinking his Turkish coffee. He never expected to fall in love with such a fine city; one he is now proud to call home.

s a 16 year veteran real estate attorney and broker, Maria Rosino-Miracco established Premia Realty Group to add an additional level of service that most of the traditional real estate brokerages don’t offer. Although not common here in California, there are many other states and countries where attorneys are instrumental in real estate transactions and closings. Because the normal practice in California real estate sales is to utilize a Realtor, many feel that consulting an attorney is unnecessary. To the contrary, consulting a Realtor who is also an attorney is essential because there are many pitfalls that may arise even in the most typical real estate transactions. Having seen the ramifications of poor advice and lack of due diligence, Maria stands apart by bringing legal expertise to uniquely advance clients through the complex and legally-significant maze of the modern California real estate transaction. In fact, it is not surprising that some of her clients also include real estate agents who have hired Maria with the sale of their single most important asset. If you are selling a luxury home, Maria customizes a marketing package with her clients in order to attract the greatest pool of buyers both domestically and internationally and to ensure that the property is showcased in the light consistent with the beauty and distinction of the home itself. On the buying side, Maria will listen to your needs and employ her extensive market knowledge to scout out the right home and put together a deal that uniquely positions your chances to get your offer accepted. A house is the single most expensive asset most of us will have in our lifetime. So doesn’t it make sense to consult a Realtor/Attorney to make sure you’re protected? We can proudly say that no other real estate company offers this level of personal service. Premia Realty Group is the only logical choice.

Twelve businesses that prove San Diego is an exciting place to build a business. By Sherrin Guy Despite harboring some of the best biotechnology, software, telecommunications and microbreweries in the country, San Diego is a thrilling epicenter for entrepreneurs and businesses that may soon become the vanguard of style and rebirth of cool. From decadent donuts, made-to-measure clothing, to gourmet organic tacos. Fusing functionalism with fringe and traditionalism with modernity, here are some of the city’s up and coming businesses worth watching.

1 FISH 101
fish101restaurant.com
1. If there’s one thing Josh Kerr, Tony Hawk, and Todd Richards know, it’s where to get the freshest bite. Fish 101 does all that and more, dangling clams, steamed mussels, oysters, and sashimi grade tuna as enticing bait. Modern yet rustic, the restaurant with its wooden tables, aluminum chairs, outside patio strung with lights, reverberates a cool, laid-back Leucadia vibe. Co-owners John Park and Ray Lowe bring their culinary expertise via sushi bars from San

Francisco to San Diego, along with a philosophy that blends, “the highest quality 5-star ingredients with value for money.” Working with local farmers and fishermen, Park and Lowe believe the fresh flavor of their food speaks for itself. “We don’t believe in masking flavors by covering everything in heavy butter sauces,” explains Park. It’s little wonder that the owners have succumbed to the growing demand by adding a new lunchtime menu.
2 THE DONUT BAR donutbarsandiego.com
2. There’s a reason why the Donut Bar has attained national recognition—hailed as one of the ten best donut shops in the United States. Owner Santiago Campa, says “[He’s] bringing the five-star touch back to the donut.” Discontent with the ubiquitous quality of donuts available, Campa’s desire was to do the opposite, by offering high-end quality donuts in highend business areas. His philosophy permeates into the donuts crammed with unctuous ingredients like, Jim Beam’s bourbon reduction, Vermont maple syrup Belgian chocolate curls crested atop chocolate fudge icing, christened with chocolate bar powder, freshly squeezed Meyer lemons and mildly tart blueberries. Campa also claims that when it comes to donuts, “size does matter”. His 6” x 3” donuts don’t come anywhere close to those being offered anywhere else, and the proof lies in the daily lines that dissolve by midday when most have sold out. With 30 creations to choose from, and new temptations always added, it’s no wonder celebrities like Brad Pitt have stood in line.
3 CHUCK JONES GALLERY chuckjones.com
3. The art history of animator Chuck Jones—creator of Looney Tunes characters Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Road Runner and more—resides one block from San Diego’s Convention Center. The only gallery dedicated exclusively to the art of animated film in San Diego, Chuck Jones Gallery offers rare insights into the creative life of this legend’s work including rare prints, limited editions, hand painted production cels and gicleés. Visitors can also view less familiar traditional drawings, nudes and paintings. A surprise to any fan of Comic-Con or animation, the gallery also houses prints licensed to Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Peanuts and Dr. Seuss. With constantly changing pieces, special events including Mother’s day, Christmas and more, this place is perfect for native pop culture enthusiasts.

THE CAVE STORE cavestore.com 4. An Aladdin’s cave for the curious and historically minded lies hidden by the ocean sea. An oddity, a spectacle of sight and sound beckons to the discerning. The Cave Store, arguably one of the most unique and oldest stores in La Jolla, sits directly above Sunny Jim’s Cave—one of 6 caves that can be entered by water. The Cave Store, however, is the only sea cave that can be entered from land. For a small fee, visitors can descend into an under-world existence by staircase, surrounded by celestial colors daubed in purples, pinks and reds. These beautiful colors seep into the cave’s epidermis from the stains left behind by iron oxide in mineral deposits. The store maintains almost untouched, like it did almost a century ago, but now it sells shiny wares, shells, jewelry and clothing to the inquisitive. facebook.com/FINEmagazines | FINEsd.com

5 THE SECRET COOKIE SERVICE thesecretcookieservice.com
5. There is a rumor awry. Spread not by the surreptitious, but by the ardent midnight snacker— a secret that is rapidly being unwrapped by sweet-toothed lovers in San Diego. The Secret Cookie Service delivers warm and chewy, fresh baked cookies right to your door, anytime until 2:00 a.m. Started by agent Snicker Doodle, a former Ph.D. student at UCSD’s Department of Chemistry, the farcical delivery experience is a real draw. Texted orders are delivered by agents dressed in dark shades, white shirts and black ties. So popular is the cryptic cookie service that a new cookie stand opened in Mission Beach, offering cookies, ice-cream cookie sandwiches, and coffee—open from 6:00 p.m. until they sell out.

TECHNOMANIA CIRCUS technomaniacircus.com 6. A hybrid of low brow humor, performance art, music, puppetry and homegrown special effects, the Technomania Circus has reinvented what comes to town. San Diego’s Technomania, a freakish, outlandish and fantastical performance/art-circus, has turned the idea of entertainment literally on its head. Employing Black Light Theatre and the use of negative space—where the venue and performers are blackened in darkness— fluorescent light paint and music are used to create an orgy of spectacle, with live music, stand-up comedy, negative striptease and aerial acrobatics, all housed in the Victory Theater. The experience is truly original, much like its producer and director Dr. Techno who thrives on, “nurturing talent” from his performers and employs an open door policy where anyone can bring their creative ideas to the table.

ighttime is the right time to dine at some of San Diego’s known and established fine-dining restaurants where the food is impeccable, service is professional, and the ambiance is gracious and charming. From champagne and caviar to farm-to-table cuisine, if nothing less than a first-rate dining experience will do, these enchanting restaurants will prove suitable for even the most discerning of palates.
BERTRAND AT MISTER A’S Located on the 12th floor of the 5th Avenue Financial Center building, experience modern American food with French and Mediterranean influences at this stunning penthouse restaurant just minutes from downtown. The dining room is light and bright with floor-to-ceiling windows boasting panoramic views of San Diego Bay, Balboa Park, Coronado, Point Loma, and even the world-famous San Diego Zoo. I love to dine al fresco on the heated outdoor patio. Offering a seasonal and revolving menu, Chef de Cuisine Stéphane Voitzwinkler sources all of his produce from Chino Farms in Rancho Santa Fe and varies his seafood use based on what is available from local purveyors. While French ingredients and techniques dominate, Voitzwinkler’s German influence makes itself evident in his dish of Maine Lobster “Strudel” with Cognac Lobster Sauce and Forest Mushrooms. Light and simple preparations that offer a refined elegance include the Traditional Style Escargot, Soft-Shell Crab or Sautéed Maine Scallops. (continued on page 58)

A.R. VALENTIEN The Lodge at Torrey Pines is home to A.R. Valentien, one of San Diego’s most notable and refined restaurants. You will certainly feel transported whiling away the hours in a charming dining room with a beautiful view of the Torrey Pines Golf Course and the Pacific Ocean just off the bluffs in the distance. Executive Chef Jeff Jackson and Chef de Cuisine Kelli Crosson offer a cuisine that revolves around the seasons, assuring superb freshness and taste with every bite. “Chef Jackson and I share the same philosophy on food—keep it simple and perfect,” says Crosson. “When it’s simple, you must focus on your technique and there’s no room for error.” The charcuterie section of the menu is one of my favorites, especially the Duck and Pistachio Pâté and Short Rib Terrine with Celery Aioli, Zucchini Pickles. Artisanal and farmhouse cheeses are outstanding, and the meat and seafood options range anywhere from Roman Style Duck Breast to Niman Ranch Pork Loin and East Coast Scallops.
ADDISON AT THE GRAND DEL MAR Timeless and classic, Addison within The Grand Del Mar offers opulent yet understated European charm. the eighteenth hole of the Grand Golf Club. Executive Chef William Bradley’s artisanal approach to cooking contemporary French cuisine with an emphasis on seasonal California ingredients makes for masterfully presented entrees with intense flavor characteristics. This is a destination to enjoy a true “dining experience,” savored for hours over several courses, each a masterpiece in flavor and presentation.
THE MARINE ROOM Opened in 1941, The Marine Room quickly became famous as the pounding surf created dramatic displays for the guests to watch, especially during their popular High Tide breakfast, offered on select days during the winter months. Food is magic here, and Executive Chef Bernard Guillas and Chef de Cuisine Ron Oliver bring an international influence to their cuisine, so much so that they wrote a cookbook called Flying Pans in which they tell of their traveling tales from around the globe with recipes to match. Relying on the bounty of the farmers’ markets, fishermen, and ranchers, chef Guillas creates a cuisine that allows him to share his love and passion for cooking while showcasing his local heritage. From local seafood favorites to the seasonal and exotic, the menu is an elegant and everlasting tale of two chefs. Some of my favorite dishes include the Forest Mushroom Duck Casserole, Cypress Grove Humboldt Fog Brûlée and the Pistachio Crusted Lamb Rack. (continued on page 60)

Worth the Wait Discover the rich history and robust flavors of San Diego’s family-owned vineyards and wineries.
By Bob Morey
It’s been called the nectar of Gods—a drink that has transcended the written history of mankind. Here in San Diego, that history continues—surviving the adversity of antiquity, to literally rise from ashes. The County of San Diego has a rich and long history of wine production. It dates back to Father Junipero Serra, founder of the Mission San Diego de Alcala, who planted the first vineyards circa 1778. Father Serra was believed to have planted as many as eight more vineyards northward along the Mission Trail before his death in 1784. Today, Serra is commonly referred to as the “Father of California Wine”. Those vineyards died out around 1835 from neglect. In 1852, A.E. Maxcy established a winery on a 360-acre ranch in what is now Valley Center. Following the end of the Civil War, San Diego saw a renewed interest from winemakers arriving from the east, that with them brought grapes of European origin. Production between 1880 and 1890 was notable as vineyards and wineries spread across the county. By the turn of the century, there were a couple dozen winery’s in locations that stretched from Rancho Santa Margarita—now part of Camp Pendleton—on east through Vista, Escondido, and Ramona. In the south there were wineries in El Cajon, Otay Valley, and parts of what is now National City. This was a time of renaissance in San Diego’s thriving agriculture scene and growing wine production. In 1908, Escondido began hosting the Grape Day Festival as a way to celebrate the seasonal harvest of grapes and to promote the small township. The Grape Day Festival continued through 1950 when the festival lost momentum as a result of dwindling vineyards in the area. Today, the revival of wineries throughout the area has given the festival new life— gaining recognition by the Escondido Historical Center in 1996. The Grape Day Festival is due this year on Sept. 6.

In the early 1900’s, the Temperance Movement swept across the nation, which lead to the 18th Amendment or Prohibition. All but four of San Diego’s thriving winery’s met their demise during this time. Two of these reaming wineries have maintained notable histories here in San Diego. In 1889, a group of five Sicilians acquired land through a Spanish land grant. They ran the winery under the ‘Lanza’ label until 1927, when they sold it to Vincent Rizzo. Today, the winery is known as the Bernardo Winery, and survived Prohibition buy selling sacramental wine to the Catholic Church and selling grape juice that was guaranteed to ferment by the time customers reached the main road. The Bernardo Winery also had extensive olive trees on the property and became an exclusive supplier of olive oil to San Diego’s tuna industry. Today, Bernardo Winery celebrates its 125th year of continual operation, still run by the Rizzo family, headed by Mr. Ross Rizzo Jr., along with his sisters Selena and Samantha. Ferrara is another winery that endured during this time. In 1919, records show that George Ferrara acquired a vineyard that may have been planted as early as 1890. Under the terms of Prohibition, families could only produce 200 gallons of wine a year for personal consumption. Ferrara survived by selling his grapes to families for personal use, and selling wine to the Catholic Church. When the restrictions ended, the Ferrara Winery produced as many as 29 varieties of wine. The winery was sold in 2013 and was producing some of the better known wine in the region. Prohibition led to many wild tails that today can only be referred to as urban legend. It has been said the movie mogul Samuel B. Meyer—of M.G.M Studios—had a vineyard on the northern hills of what is now the Highland Valley. The story goes that Meyer produced a private label Champaign for film star Douglas Fairbanks. More impressive, it is believed that secret stills up in those same
hills produced a high proof brandy. Moonshine runners would bring the brandy to speakeasies, to what is now known as the The Gaslamp Quarter.
mimic conditions across the globe at comparable longitudes including many parts of the Mediterranean. Most varieties can be grown here successfully as well—a grape farmers wonderland.
With the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, there was hope of revival in the wine industry. With the four surviving wineries once again producing popular varietals, 16 more wineries emerged to compete. However, at this time, several vineyards had been torn out and replanted with citrus trees. San Diego growers believed they were turning a corner until the world caught fire at the beginning of World War II. The rationing and restrictions placed on the wineries raised the prices unreasonably. Serious labor shortages coupled with raw material deficits resulted in many changes inside the industry. As troops returned home from overseas, consumer taste had shifted to hard distilled liquor. From 1945 to 1964, San Diego wine makers fell away until only two remained open—Bernardo and Ferrara.
It takes a grape vine three to five years to mature and produce a grape that’s useable for consumption. From planting, to opening a completed bottle, growers wait approximately 6 to 7 years. For many of the growers that replanted after the 2007 fires, they are just now seeing their first full harvest. Many of the newly planted vines will reach maturity within the next 2 to 3 years, which may lead to another renaissance for the wine industry here in San Diego.
It was not until the early 1990’s that San Diego’s wine scene begin to flourish once again. Steady growth was assumed until fires broke out in 2003 and 2007, which destroyed hundreds of acres of agriculture. Despite the crop devastation of the wildfires, many growers took the opportunity to plant grapes instead of citrus. Growers across the county have been replanting water-thirsty crops with grape vines that require only about 3% of the water a mature avocado tree needs—providing economic relief in the shadow of California’s current drought. Moreover, San Diego’s weather and diverse microclimate make the area particularly attractive to aspiring winemakers. Even within our microclimates exists more microclimates. These areas
Today, most of our wineries are small and family owned— many owners keep day jobs. For them, wine making was a hobby that grew into a passion, and something they could share with friends. Today several of these family-owned wineries have enjoyed the fruits of their labor, and have established small businesses and boutiques. About 80% of the local wineries only produce 300 to 1,000 cases of wine each year. Some are growing award winning wines that wine lovers simply can’t find anywhere else. To honor the contribution made to our culture and the harvesting of the grapes, the State of California has decreed that September is California Wine Month. So the next time you open a bottle of wine from one of San Diego’s Wineries, sip slowly, and appreciate the incredible patience it takes to produce flavors so uniquely our own. In the next few pages, discover the rich history and robust flavors from San Diego’s family-owned vineyards and wineries.

BERNARDO WINERY Meet Southern California’s Oldest Family Owned and Operated Winery Back in the Day, when the Rizzo family
purchased The Bernardo Winery, it was a working Italian winery and rancho down a long dusty road that stretched out from the main road to the edges of the North county hillsides. The vines rolled over the hills for miles and the wines filled the brims of huge redwood tanks housed in a big barn. A precursor to the modern growler fill, one could bring barrel, jug or bottle to be filled with what was basically fortified Red wine blend of the time. Ross Rizzo Senior, who took over winemaking in the 1970’s when his father Vincent passed, began to focus on planting California style varietals while at the same time scaling back the vineyards due to rising water costs. The huge redwood tanks were put aside for modern barrels and smaller production. Enter the gates of Bernardo Winery today, rustic Italian style village still intact, well preserved, now surrounded by suburbia and you’re instantly transported back in time and place. This 125 year old hidden Gem, a testament to Old

California winemaking, with three generations of Italian heritage still passionately woven throughout by the Rizzo family today. The Redwood has been replaced by steel for production but the old equipment is still intact for the visitor to view while touring the winery. Ross Rizzo Jr, who took the winemaking reins in 2008, brings a fresh new feel to the process from vine to bottle, searching for varietals that suit the San Diego terroir, moving away from the highly produced and overrated Cabernets, Chardonnay and Merlot that California wine lovers have always reached for. There are far sexier varietals that love the San Diego microclimates and Rizzo is seeking them out one by one. Rizzo says of his winemaking style “I work to maintain the traditional old world view with the backing of modern education. You need that balance” Rizzo grew up working the land next to his father, Ross who passed away in 2008. The winemaker effects the style, and Ross’s bold young approach is evident in his wines he produces, from the rich curvaceous Syrahs, the bold dark fruit of the Zinfandel to the Sangiovese with soft tannins and Cali sunshine in a glass.
Though big and bold, they offer a nice soft balance unique to San Diego, with the pacific breezes that provide constant airflow into the inland valleys. Rizzo explains “There was a long time when we made fortified bulk wine and then there was this push for modern wine styles but without new equipment there was a decline in winemaking in general in San Diego. Now there’s this great new rebirth in technology, equipment and knowledge and the wines are showing this”. It’s an exciting time for San Diego Winemaking. Rizzo is upping wine production in the coming year, as the popularity and growth of San Diego Wine is on the rise. He estimates “Our production capacity will be increased to that of some of the bigger Southern California wineries, estimating production to reach 15000 gallons from the 5000 gallons currently”. Rizzo is also planning on moving into producing Rosé, widening the red presence with local regional reds like Barbara, Grenache, Mouvedre and planting Albariño and Muscat, a grape that Rizzo calls “a great producer back in the day in San Diego” Besides being a winemaking facility, the Bernardo Winery is a destination for visitors seeking something entirely different in San Diego. The original antique buildings
of the ranch now house specialty shops, a restaurant, coffee shop and artisan studies, from clothing and accessories to glassblowing, mosaic and clay studios. There is something for everyone to do and see, and families are welcome. The Winery also has several venues for special events. The three venues of the winery, from sprawling gardens to the original winecellar can hold groups from 3 to 300 for weddings, corporate and private events. Memories are made at the winery and the old world hospitality and charm is felt throughout. Come to taste, stay for the day and don’t miss out on the Friday Farmer’s market and Live music on Sundays. Rizzo sums up the general feeling you get from a trip to Bernardo by saying “Winemakers often forget to focus on wine consumption on a human level. You can talk about the mid palate and maceration and fermentation all day, but what really matters is when you make memories from a bottle of wine. To my father, it was about enjoying good wine with good people, that’s what it’s all about really. That’s a good day.” The Bernardo Winery is located at 13330 Paseo del Verano, San Diego Ca 92128. Woof ’n Rose Winery & Vineyard is located in Ramana Valley, southern California’s Ramona Valley American Viticultural Area. This small boutique winery is owned and operated by Steve and Marilyn Kahle, who together produce red wines from the estate grown grapes. The first vineyard of Merlot was planted in 1995, followed by Cabernet Franc, Grenache Noir, Petit Verdot, Alicante Bouschet, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Montepulciano. While production is small guests will find red wines for every palate—from a light, summertime red blend called “Puppy Love”, to the full bodied “Estate Cabernet Franc” or “Neuf Anges”, a dessert wine that is so delicious words will not suffice. Woof ’n Rose is also home to many dogs and rose bushes, which inspired the vineyard and winery name. Woof ’n Rose is open most weekends, or Steve and Marilyn are available during the week by appointment.

RAMONA RANCH VINEYARD & WINERY
W
hen Micole Moore and Teri Kerns moved to Ramona, they knew they wanted to live the agricultural lifestyle—horses, orchards, gardens, along with learning to make wine. The couple’s first vineyard went in, and by 2005 they were making small batches of wine from locally-sourced grapes, attending classes, and entering wine competitions—accumulating many amateur winemaking medals. In 2009, their Zinfandel won “Best of Show Red” at the WineMaker International Amateur Wine Competition. With more than 4,200 wines competing, from every state and several countries, the win was very significant. “That was the moment we decided to go professional,” said Teri. “It was the sign we needed to start pursuing our dream of turning our hobby into a small home business—while keeping our day jobs, of course.” “It takes more than one job to launch a winery!” Micole added. Soon after, they established Ramona Ranch as a bonded commercial winery, the name honoring their hobby ranch— the tasting terrace opened in January 2013. The design for the labels feature a ranch, cowboy theme, incorporating photos
of the couple and friends, riding horses in and around the community of Ramona. Micole and Teri invite guests to join them on their journey, to learn more about wine, and to share their handcrafted, artisan wines “I can’t promise you a perfect setting,” Teri said. “But I can promise that you’ll meet genuine people whose efforts are responsible for every step in the process to make the wine you drink. You may just fall in love with Ramona—just as we have.” In addition to the wine-making community, Micole and Teri are active with the Ramona Valley Vineyards Association, where Micole serves as President. They also enjoy the local equestrian scene in Ramona, riding with fellow winemakers and friends often. Moreover, they helped launch the Ramona Valley Wine Region magazine with publisher Dave Billick, following the emerging wine community of San Diego County, the fastest growing wine region in California.. www.ramonaranch.net 23578 California 78, Ramona, CA 92065 (760) 789-1622, Follow us on Facebook and Twitter

BEACH HOUSE WINERY
A
BY BOB MOREY s I was dashing around the county from vineyard to winery, several people told me I had to get over and see Kim and George Murray, owners of Beach House Winery. I’m glad I did.
winery in San Diego County and sits atop one of the highest hills in Oceanside. Offering 360-degree views that stretch from Palomar Mt. to San Clemente Island, northward to DeLuz and Fallbrook, down to La Jolla.
Kim and George met at work 25 years ago. They became good friends that shared common interests like surfing, skiing, and later—among friends—they discovered the fine art of making wine. The romantic spirit of winemaking was contagious and the couple’s love affair blossomed. As the saying goes—the rest is history.
George and Kim have 2,000 vines growing on their 4-acre property. They also manage several more. The couple also bring grapes in from other sources including San Diego County. This allows them to produce 11 varietals of their award winning wine, with plenty remaining to share with friends.
The couple began producing wine in 1998 as a hobby they loved sharing with friends. George branded his wine “River Run”, while Kim preferred, “Sleeping Indian”. In 2005, at their nondescript beach-house in Oceanside, they decided on Beach House Winery. It didn’t take long for their friend’s and the local community to approve of their hobby, the result of which was the commercial launch of Beach House Winery in 2010.
The 2013 harvest marked a banner year for Kim and George, using the grapes from their vines to produce the first ever BHW estate wine. Its aging in the barrel as I write. I suggest you wind your way up the hill and see the best kept secret in Oceanside for yourself.

We invite you to come out and taste our award winning wines while you enjoy the vista from the new tasting patio. You will be welcomed by the owners and your tasting will be conducted by winemaker John York who will guide you through the experience with a “user friendly” description of each wine and the entire winemaking process. Hellanback Ranch is nestled in a secluded canyon between Black Horse Mountain and Starlight Mountain with Mount Gower Open Space Preserve to the west and The Cleveland National Forest to the south. It’s about a 60 minute drive from downtown San Diego, just east of Ramona, but it feels like the middle of nowhere. Why is the ranch called Hellanback? You’ll just have to visit to find out. A MUSICAL LOVE STORY
Jahja Ling and Jessie Chang are cultural ambassadors of the San Diego Symphony. BY ERICA MINER
H
e started playing piano at age four, won a Rockefeller grant to study at the prestigious Juilliard School, medaled at the Arthur Rubinstein International Competition, was awarded a Tanglewood fellowship to study conducting with famed maestro Leonard Bernstein. He’s conducted at the State visit of the Queen of England and Prince of Edinburgh in San Francisco, and accompanied Whitney Houston’s national anthem at Super Bowl XXV. It is no wonder San Diego Symphony Maestro Jahja Ling enjoys instant recognition around America’s finest city. The orchestra stands as one of the most important lynchpins of our cultural life. As the only member of the San Diego arts community chosen by the San Diego Tourism Authority to participate in its 2011 San Diego Ambassador Campaign, Maestro Ling likens our city to an orchestra of many diverse instruments put together. “There are many facets of color that San Diego represents,” he says. “We have great music, great culture, beautiful ocean and beaches, like an orchestra. A flute, which can represent joy… a cello’s depth of sound, attractiveness, sexiness, combined with the horn, a very warm sound. People

here are really eager to hear excellence in the arts, to be inspired with this great city.” Born in Jakarta, Indonesia, of Indonesian-Chinese parents, now a U.S. citizen, Jahja Ling is the first and only conductor of Chinese descent to become music director of a major U.S. orchestra, and has conducted every prominent symphony orchestra in North America. Like Bernstein, Ling often dances on the podium, embodying his avowed mission to inspire his musicians to “move people’s souls and people’s hearts” when they play. “San Diego is a great place for musicians. Here we have a world class orchestra, the best of the best.” They also make music with the likes of Joshua Bell, Emanuel Ax, Lang Lang and Yo Yo Ma. This past season the orchestra received great acclaim for their first appearance at Carnegie Hall, and for their groundbreaking China Friendship Tour, where they performed in Shanghai, Beijing, and San Diego’s sister
city of Yantai in Shandong province. “The reception from audiences there was fantastic,” the maestro declares. But there also is a deeply personal musical theme in the maestro’s life—the love story with his concert pianist wife, Jessie Chang, whom he married in 2001. Chang, who grew up in Taiwan and, like Maestro Ling, began to play piano at age four, has won a constellation of awards for her outstanding artistry. She was a graduate student in piano at the Manhattan School of Music in 1999 and sang in the choir at the Chinese Community Church of New York when she and the maestro met, and had previously greeted Ling at a Juilliard concert he was conducting. “Because of our church relationship with him, we got to go backstage and say hello,” said the soft-spoken Chang. “Like a three-second greeting. But it was a very memorable performance.” Later on they got to know each other better when Ling directed the choir at the church, and eventually spoke on the phone everyday about music and religion. Known among her colleagues and teachers for her virtuosity, lovely tone, and unique, distinctive piano style, Chang also impressed the maestro with her deep intellect and a sense of musical feeling that he found mesmerizing. As their romance burgeoned, she showed tireless devotion with her participation in his musical life, traveling with him and serving as an ambassador to his numerous public events. When their courtship showed signs of developing into a lifetime commitment, she decided she wanted “a carriage and a helicopter” as part of their nuptials. “I wasn’t one of those girls who fantasize about how their wedding’s going to be,” said Chang. “I just thought I’d be living in New York City for a long time with my huge dog, and pursue my musical career. That was my dream.” “You loved New York,” the maestro said. “You also loved me,” he added, laughing. Chang also laughed. “But then we met and it just… happened. He was much older and already established. So the right thing was to incorporate into his life.” On New Years Day, 2001, she rode a horse-drawn carriage to their wedding at the church. Musically and romantically, it was a dream wedding, topped only by the reception. After the ceremony a white 1956 Rolls Royce sped the couple to a motor yacht on the Hudson River. “There had been a big snowstorm, and they were afraid of getting her gown dirty,” Ling recalled. “The chauffeur lifted her up and carried her onto the yacht.” As the yacht sliced through the icy Hudson, several famous musical friends performed everything from intimate love songs to excerpts from grand operas, and on a Steinway the couple played four-hand piano pieces for the guests, among them Ling’s mentor, New York Philharmonic maestro Kurt Masur. Then the boat docked at the Chelsea helipad, and the newlyweds boarded a copter. As the bird climbed upward, Chang tossed her bouquet toward the crowd below. “Jahja’s
best friend’s son caught it,” she said gleefully. The couple’s relationship has melded their common interests and concepts most important to them: music, intellect, and religion. Awarded with top honors at major national and international competitions, and now with two young daughters to raise, Chang still manages to maintain her pianistic excellence. She has shown her sparkling musical touch performing as a soloist with her husband as conductor, where the two have exhibited a wonderful chemistry. Together as pianists they performed the Mozart Concerto for Two Pianos with the Florida Symphony conducted by Ling’s mentor Otto Werner-Mueller; and in March 2013, Chang and Ling continued their joint collaboration in Poulenc’s fiendishly difficult Concerto for Two Pianos with the San Diego Symphony. True to her nature, Chang approached Poulenc’s music both emotionally and intellectually, and was struck with Poulenc’s fascination with the Javanese Gamelan, which Ling was required to learn as part of his Indonesian musical upbringing. Despite the music’s dissonances and intricate jazz elements, Chang says, it was great fun for the two artists to perform together. When she is not concertizing, the young mother of two can be seen in attendance at almost every concert her husband conducts at Copley Symphony Hall, regularly performs chamber music in and around San Diego with members of the orchestra, and teaches a large cluster of piano students. The Lings’ ten-year-old daughter Priscilla, under her mom’s tutelage, will make her solo debut with orchestra in a Bach piano concerto in Jakarta with her father on the podium. Does Chang have any fear when it comes to Priscilla’s performing? She laughed. “Oh, I have.” But, she adds, Priscilla, also a figure skater, “loves to perform.” As to how she manages to maintain her high standard of piano playing, raise two daughters, and teach twenty-three students, Chang replies simply, “God’s grace.” Ling understands the importance of all this musical activity for his talented wife. He and Jessie form a great team, whether musically, intellectually, or romantically. Individually and together, these two lovebirds truly are two of San Diego’s finest cultural ambassadors; a match made in musical heaven, symbolizing the harmony of the ensemble that helps make our city great: the San Diego Symphony.
