Hi from Jeff, Every ‘Buyers Guide’ we compile at FWD Co. begins with a brainstorming session combining our buying/tasting/marketing teams. Rather than trying to create some innocuous theme… we explore new releases/vintages - global show results – everyday bargains of exceptional quality – collectors must have wines – important wine growing regions globally and domestically – key annual releases – craft beer releases/trends/ specials – what’s new, plus hot deals with specialist fine spirits. We compile a broad range of the most interesting/exciting options across all categories then call for samples to be reviewed by our tasting panel. Having narrowed it down to our ultimate selection, we meet with suppliers face to face and negotiate the best deals possible… most of the time they’re the best in the country. But, it’s not just price… it’s equally important to secure availability of rare and restricted wines in maximum quantities to ensure our customers have superior access to them, plus discover wines that have x-factor value far in excess of their asking price. In your March/April Buyers Guide we have plenty of variety and excitement including our very own direct-imports that have just landed in the last two weeks. Our fourth vintage release of Clarendelle wines (by Chȃteau Haut-Brion), include two new premium Médoc and St Émilion releases alongside the exciting 2014 Bordeaux Rouge. Alexi Dasté, our negociant will be here for the launch and I will join him in both SuperStores to taste these exciting wines with you (details on the events page). The superb, sub $20 Esprit de la Vallée Côtes du Rhône and Vacqueyras reds from the sensational 99/100… 2016 Southern Rhone vintage have the whole team buzzing. For the first time we are importing the very stylish, typical, and refined Alsace wines of Klipfel - outstanding

buying at $19.99!

There’s many other wine selections and hot deals from $12.99 to $329/bottle. Enjoy reading your Buyers Guide and exploring the fine wines, spirits and craft beers…we had a lot of fun selecting them.

Cheers, Jeff Poole

Hunter’s MiruMiru NV

MEDAL

92/100 - Bob Campbell MW

The blend of 50% Chardonnay, 46% Pinot Noir and 4% Pinot Meunier is straight out of the Champagne winemaking manual, as is the winemaking and extended lees aging. The nose is a dead-ringer for Reims; with delicate toasty notes followed by red apple, peach, grilled lemon, brioche and honey. It gets even better in the mouth with a creamy mousse and a mouth-watering, toasty finish.

Our pick for the best value Methode in NZ… special allocation for FWD Co. customers There are many great NZ Methodes, but Hunter’s can now claim bragging rights, having won “Best NZ Methode” Trophy at the Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships an incredible 3 years in a row! All bubblies are not created equal, the key difference being the method of production once the grapes are in the winery. By far the most premium way is called Methode Traditionnelle, or the traditional method, which is how they do it in the world’s pre-eminent region, Champagne. The top local producers have copied the secondary fermentation after bottling and the extended aging on the yeast lees to give the delicious creamy, nutty, bready character. We actually got our customers so excited about MiruMiru in Christmas 2015 that Hunter’s had to cut off supply the next year to protect their base cuvée stocks! It made a welcome comeback on strict allocations this Festive Season and we have been very lucky to secure an additional 56 cases for our customers.

Gancia Prosecco D.O.C NV

Paltrinieri Lambrusco Di Sorbara DOC Radice 2016

90/100 - Bob Campbell MW 90/100 - Sam Kim

93/100 - Wine Enthusiast 94/100 - James Suckling

Part of Prosecco’s charm is its complete lack of pretense, the emphasis being on juicy, bright, fruit flavours that put a smile on your face. Made from the Glera grape, Gancia weighs in at a very welcoming 11.5% alcohol and has a summery character full of tropical stonefruits and citrus. The perfect thing on a summer’s day with good company, our special price is equally refreshing.

Wine Enthusiast selected this as one of their Top 10 wines for 2017 calling it “one of the best Lambruscos out there”. JamesSuckling.com; “An extremely sophisticated Lambrusco…the mouthfeel is second to none”. Erase any stereotypes that influence your understanding of this style, this is a seriously cool, slightly sparkling ruby wine with gorgeous berry fruits and seductive racy acidity. Experience Lambrusco like you never have before…trust us, it’s impressive!

“An exceptional Champagne House that we are proud to be the sole importer for in NZ, through our long-standing relationship with Gardet (our house Champagne). Ployez-Jacquemart are very boutique, producing only 15,000 6-packs annually across their entire range (think in the millions of cases for the most famous of producers). Only 425 cases of Liesse d’Harbonville, the illustrious jewel in the crown, were made and allocated to select merchants across the globe who are privileged to sell this elite Champagne. Released at 18-years of age and after a minimum 10-years ageing on lees ‘sur pointe’ (meaning on their nose rather than lying flat, creating a more elegant style). Made from 100% Grand Cru fruit, 70% Chardonnay, this is truly meditative Champagne, seductively rich with endless layers of toast, creamy hazelnut, red apple and brioche. Only 67 bottles, prestige Champagne lovers must indulge!” - Tracey Hawes

95/100 - Wine Enthusiast 95/100 - Falstaff Magazine

One of the world’s most soughtafter Prestige Cuvées, and very hard to find in NZ in recent years. 2011 is the latest Belle Epoque, cellar master Herve Deschamps emphasising the unique character of each vintage with 50% Chardonnay from the Grand Crus of Cramant and Avize, 45% Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and 5% Pinot Meunier from Dizy. Lively, powerful and ultra-refined.

Only 7 people have held the coveted title of cellar master at Perrier-Jouët in the 200-year history of Perrier-Jouët, Hervé Deschamps a relative newcomer having only held the job for 25 years. Even more celebrated than the Belle Epoque is the Rosé blend. A blend of 50% Chardonnay from the finest Grand Crus, the pale hue comes from an addition of 11% still Pinot Noir. Majestic and pure.

y r e n i W l u f s s e c c u S t s o M- 2 years running! tna ional Wine Competition Sydney Inter

Yealands awarded “Most Successful Winery” Trophy at the prestigious Sydney International Wine Competition for the second year running! Collecting a swag of awards across their stunning range of wines, they were awarded three Trophies, four Top 100/Blue-Gold medals, four Blue-Gold Medals and two Gold Medals. The most successful results ever in their nine years entering this prestigious competition, it is

reflective of the incredible journey of this trailblazing, sustainable winery. The company ethos is perfectly captured by Peter Yealands credo: “Think boldly, tread lightly and never say it can’t be done.” Across the board, the wines are always of exceptional quality relative to their price, and their ecofriendly credentials are second to none. ‘Babydoll’ sheep, Kunekune pigs and chickens roam the vines, contributing ‘fertiliser’ and keeping grass and insects at bay. Then there is the state-of-the-art winemaking facility with its wind turbines and solar-paneled roof, the first winery in the world to be accredited CarboNZero from inception and also first to be awarded the Green Company GC-Mark Certification. Yealands has even developed ways of converting vineyard and winery by-products like heat and prunings back into usable energy, while their annual solar yield could power 86 New Zealand households!

The jewel in the company’s crown is their iconic Seaview Vineyard, which Peter Yealands shaped from the seat of his digger starting in 2002. His goal has always been to leave the land better than he found it, which includes extensive planting of over 200,000 native flaxes and shrubs, as well as 25 wetlands areas. The native bird population is thriving, the only challenge is keeping them off these precious grapes! Enjoy this selection of Trophy, Top 100, Blue Gold Medal winning wines. We’ve secured the last available stocks of the Trophy winning Babydoll Rosé and exciting deals on the double Trophy winning Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, Top 100 and double Gold medal winning Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc and the Blue-Gold medal Pinot Gris. What an achievement and what a stunning producer NZ can be hugely proud of…you can’t go wrong with this quartet!

Peter Yealands Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2017

13.99

A step up in weight and quality from the bargain-priced Estate range, one sip and you’ll see why this gem was judged Best Sauvignon at the Sydney International Wine Competition. Pristine and mouth-watering, it’s chock full of tropical and citrus aromatics and flavour, a classic Marlborough style that makes your mind wander to a plate of green-lipped mussels in a white wine and cream sauce.

Yealands Estate Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2017

19.99

The finest possible expression of Yealands’ finest vineyard, Seaview in the Awatere Valley, the Single Vineyard was also a Blue Gold winner at the Sydney IWC. A blend of two blocks, one warmer and inland, the other cooler and coastal, it’s filled with blackcurrant bud, guava and fresh herbs. A refined and sophisticated style that’s the next best thing to visiting the vineyard yourself!

Peter Yealands Marlborough Pinot Gris 2017

12.99

Crowd-pleasing dry styles like this Peter Yealands illustrate why Pinot Gris has become so amazingly popular of late, the Marlborough vineyards tending to produce wines with vibrant fruit and mouth-watering acidity. Luscious and very more-ish, it’s a classic quaffing style, filled with nashi pear, fig, red gala apples and peach before a refreshing, charming finish. Great with Thai food.

Babydoll Hawke’s Bay Rosé 2017

13.99

Named after the two-foot high miniature sheep that roam the Yealands vineyards all year round, the Babydoll range is a playful addition to the portfolio. Their gorgeous Rosé is made by soaking Pinot Noir grapes on skins before a slow, cool fermentation to lock in the freshness. Enjoy the flavours of pomegranate, strawberry shortcake and honeysuckle with salmon or tuna. FEATURE: YEALANDS ESTATE // PAGE 7

Ward Valley ‘Triple Block’ Sauvignon Blanc 2017 90/100 - Wine Orbit & “Good Buy” - Bob Campbell MW

155.87

Ward Valley is a new label to our shelves, but the winemaker is an old favourite… Dave Clouston (Two Rivers and Black Cottage) uses his prolific talents to help his friends James Leary and Freddy Davison produce Marlborough Sauvignon at its finest. The Ward Valley region is described as ‘the last frontier’ of winegrowing in Marlborough, the rugged, earthquake-prone country seeming to rub off on the wines. This Triple Block makes use of Wairau and Awatere fruit to achieve its stunning purity and complexity. Bob Campbell MW praises its ethereal texture and flags it as one of his Best Buys… at our 13-bottle case price, it’s even better!

Villa Maria Single Vineyard Southern Clays Sauvignon Blanc 2017

5 Stars - Cuisine Magazine 18/20 - Raymond Chan

95/100 - Bob Campbell MW 18/20 - Raymond Chan

This classic Marlborough style takes its name from the famous GCSB “spy” station in the Waihopai Valley and was a big standout for our panel in 2017, a year when not all wines were as successful thanks to late season cyclones Debbie and Cook. Crisp, fresh and exceptionally pure and refined, the aromatics are thrilling and seductive, the zippy, tropical flavours a perfect match for mussels.

The Southern Clays is a sub-region on the rise, its higher percentage of clay in the soil creating wines of a greater mouthfeel than those with sandy loams over glacial gravels. Villa Maria have made it famous with their outstanding Pinot Noirs, but the Sauvignon Blanc was a standout for us this year. Expressive, textured and seriously weighty, this is a top-notch Sauvignon Blanc we just love!

A brand on the rise and a major steal at our spectacular ‘Buyers Guide’ price, Summerhouse has become even more exciting with Sam Harrop MW now consulting. Single vineyard Pinot Gris from their stunning Taylor Pass vineyard in Marlborough, this 2017 was a worthy winner of the coveted Trophy at the NZ Aromatic Wine Show. Immaculate and inviting, almost dry, with inviting fragrances of pear, exotic florals and white peach, followed by a fat, juicy palate with a kiss of oak and lees stirring fleshing out the creamy mid-palate. 4 Stars - Michael Cooper 91/100 - Wine Orbit

96/100 - Bob Campbell MW 18/20 - Raymond Chan

Voted Michael Cooper’s White Wine Buy of the Year a couple of years back, Main Divide has the most devoted following of any Pinot Gris on our shelves. Crafted under the expert hand of Matt Donaldson at the iconic Pegasus Bay winery, it is full of candied ginger, citrus peel, nashi pear and honey. Exotic and individual in an off-dry style, it’s delicious and luxurious.

This wine is the very definition of hedonism, made by Jim Jerram at Ostler in the super-marginal climes of North Otago, the spectacular vineyard sits above Lake Waitaki. The Lakeside Vines is an amazingly decadent, sweet style reminiscent of the wines of Hugel in Alsace. Filled with honeysuckle, peach, poached pear, nutmeg, cinnamon, quince and nashi, it will rock your world.

Mount Riley Riesling 2017 94/100 - FWD Co. Panel

We’ve spent years espousing the virtues of Mount Riley wines, their sheer bang-for-buck and vibrant, pure flavours are unmatched within their price category. But even against that backdrop, this 2017 Riesling is a shockingly good wine… Awarded Gold & Trophy for Champion Riesling at the Air NZ Wine Awards 2017, it went head-to-head with wines two and three times its price and wiped the floor with them. It’s a delicious off-dry style that is filled to bursting with sweet lemon, apple, lime, mandarins and wildflowers, a racy line of acidity cleaning up the palate and making you thirst for another sip. 5 Stars - Sam Kim 18.5/20 - Raymond Chan

Of all the so-called ‘alternative’ white varieties planted in New Zealand, we reckon Albariño leads the way in terms of quality and suitability. One of our favourite bargain examples is from Aronui, part of the same stable as Tohu. A refined, dry style with a distinctively European feel to it, it’s filled with honeycomb, lemon flesh, orange and a mouth-watering salty minerality.

The spicy appeal of Gewürztraminer is sensational when it’s done well, and after several decades, nobody does it better than Johanneshof. Although it says Marlborough on the label, it’s really halfway to Picton in Koromiko, perched up on a steep hillside into which is tunneled a 50-metre underground cellar (NZ’s first). Rose petals, Turkish delight, honey and ginger in an off-dry style.

. e c a s l A r e Discov Klipfel Pinot Gris 2016

Exclusive to Fine Wine Delivery Co. Customers… the sought after aromatic wines of Alsace have never been so affordable! Steeped in history, Klipfel was created by Martin Klipfel in 1824 and it is still family owned and run today by Jean-Louis LorentzKlipfel and his three daughters. In their cellars you can find wines dating back to 1921! As a region Alsace is truly special, protected by the Vosges Mountains, it has thirteen distinct terroirs and ancient soils from which it creates aromatic wines other regions the world over try to emulate (including NZ). We are excited to have discovered the Klipfel wines, you will be too!

The Alsatian style of Pinot Gris has long been the goal for Kiwi winemakers, this deliciously quaffable style sitting easily with local examples in a rich, off-dry style. The nose shows expressive notes of wild flowers, acacia and quince, while the palate is honeyed and full of pears and fig. Try it with lightly spiced Asian food for best results, or with fish in sauce, chicken or hard cheeses.

19.99

Klipfel Riesling 2016 Klipfel was founded way back in 1824 and today holds some 40 hectares of vines covering every Alsatian variety. This Riesling was a real standout for our panel, strikingly mineral and dry, with just a little fruit sweetness to fatten out the palate. Precise and pure with lots of lemon, mandarin and lime, this will be a real treat with seafood, or the local match of Alsatian sauerkraut.

19.99

Klipfel Gewürztraminer 2016 There is nothing quite like the aromatic intensity and exotic charm of an Alsatian Gewürztraminer, the unctuous viscosity and clarity of this Klipfel offering great value at the price. A cracking match with intensely flavoured cheeses like Munster and Roquefort, it also goes well with Thai food. 2016 was a benchmark year in Alsace, with notable winemakers calling it “one of the best ever”.

CHARDONNAY - From elegant to bold!

Harken Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2016

The Californian Chardonnay Storm Keeps Rolling In...

92/100 - FWD Co. Tasting Panel

Big and buttery styles never went out of fashion at Fine Wine Delivery Co., which is probably why Californian styles have taken off so quickly. Sebastiani went first, but Bogle has gone crazy, with a religious following nearly large enough to qualify for tax-exempt status! California has embraced the old-school style Chardonnay lovers craved, this amazing Harken Barrel Fermented Chardonnay ticks every box and brings new excitement to this unstoppable Chardonnay trend. With 100% barrel fermentation and 100% malolactic, as well as 7 months in 80% American and 20% French oak, it’s all about the crème brûlée and buttered toast, the smoky oak coming through on nose and palate. Grown on the Arroyo Seco AVA southeast of Monterey (prime Chardonnay country), it’s big, rich and buttery. A new darling of the Californian Chardonnay set…making its debut here at Fine Wine Delivery Co., it is sure to impress.

This decadent Californian Chardonnay is opulent, creamy, filled with ripe peach and apricot fruits, and totally old-school! The blurb on the label sums up the winery’s philosophy: “We created Harken Chardonnay because we missed that rich oaky taste of Chardonnays gone by. At some point someone decided that those great oaky notes and buttery finish went out of style. We think that’s crazy. So we brought it back.”

Spade Oak Voysey Series was our top-selling Chardonnay under $15 for many years, and after a brief hiatus, is back with a vengeance. Steve Voysey is the Shah of Chardonnay, our local Gisborne guru for the big buttery styles. This latest 2017 vintage offers incredible bang for buck, with even more of the creamy, toasty flavours we’ve come to love.

If Kumeu River was in Burgundy, Mates and Hunting Hill would be the Grand Crus, the Estate would be the 1er Cru and the Kumeu Village would be… well… their Village wine! An awesome bargain, 100% hand harvested, it is generously fruited with loads of biscuity lees notes and a lightly creamy finish. Everyday enjoyment from our most prestigious of Chardonnay producers.

Man O’ War Valhalla Chardonnay 2016 95/100 - Bob Campbell MW & 95/100 - Sam Kim

“Man O’ War describe this as one of the best vintages of Chardonnay they have produced, and we’d have to agree. With three 5 Star ratings already, the critics are raving too! Man O’ War is a special and unique vineyard with Chardonnay vines planted on the exposed hilltop volcanic sites cooled by the sea breezes, these sites give the mineral, aromatic and elegant edges to the wine. The steep sheltered sites in the valleys with more clay-rich soils give the richer more powerful elements that are hallmarks of this flagship Chardonnay. With whole-bunch pressing, foot crushing and wild fermentation, 100% new and seasoned French oak, only the best barrels make it in to Valhalla. It’s generous and full-bodied with ripe grapefruit, layers of tropical fruits and a creamy texture finishing incredibly long. I can’t resist drinking it now, but this a prestige Chardonnay that will reward cellaring.” - Virginia Poole

Elephant Hill Syrah Rosé 2017

Elephant Hill Profile German efficiency meets kiwi ingenuity!

18.5/20 - Raymond Chan 93/100 - Wine Orbit

No visit to the Hawke’s Bay is complete without a trip to the coastal vineyards at Te Awanga and the architecturally imposing winery restaurant at Elephant Hill. With views of the Pacific Ocean and the Kidnapper Cliffs, it’s a setting so memorable that great wines seem only logical. The coastal property was bought by the late Roger Weiss and his wife Reydan back in 2001, after they fell in love with the area while out from their native Germany. Sadly, Roger passed away suddenly in late 2016, and his son Andreas is now at the helm. Like many great businesses, key staff never want to leave, with winemaker Steve Skinner and head chef Ashley Jones both there since late 2006. Steve Skinner has access to exceptional vineyards from not just Te Awanga, but the Triangle and Gimblett Gravels regions too. These great terroirs are on display in this amazing Syrah Rosé (they also do a Tempranillo). Spicy, vibrant and exotic, it sums up the charm of Elephant Hill perfectly.

A blend of Triangle, Gravels and Te Awanga fruit, the blend for this benchmark Rosé is 97% Syrah and 3% Merlot. Fragrant, pure and exceptionally juicy, full of red liquorice, strawberry, raspberry and cream, there is a delicious piquancy from the peppery notes of Syrah that set your saliva glands a-watering. Superb quality, this is a 5-Star Rosé in anyone’s book (including Raymond Chan’s!)

Creamy, fresh and long, with personality plus. Rosé is enjoyed all year round these days, this one is just never around for that long!

Rhone Vintage

“99/100 for Rhone 2016... International demand is enormous!”

James Molesworth is Wine Spectator’s expert on the Rhone region in France… the excitement in his recent article on the stunning 2016 vintage there, is almost palpable. Kiwis love the classic Syrah/Grenache and Grenache/Syrah dominant blends of the Southern Rhône and demand for them is constant. It’ll be a case of “never more so”, with the fabulous 2016 vintage that James is effusive in his praise of! He rates the two-impressive back to back vintages in the Rhône… 2015 – 97/100 Southern Rhône and 99/100 Northern Rhône… he reverses 2016 with…99/100 Southern Rhône and 97/100 Northern Rhône.

Just two points separate both vintages, placing both in the outstanding classification. The resulting quality in such vintages trickles down to the everyday quaffing wines. Our contacts in the Rhône gave us a heads up post-harvest, so we were quick to compile a selection of the vintage stars from collector’s rarities down to the everyday gems. The team at our Constellation Drive SuperStore are excited about the arrival direct from the Rhône (temperaturecontrolled shipment) of these two exceptional everyday gems from the 99/100… 2016 vintage. Not only for their exuberant flavours, stylish, juicy and balanced palates… but also for their remarkably modest prices that ensure all red wine lovers can improve on their regular drinking pleasure. FWD Co. were first to introduce a comprehensive 100%... swap or refund policy when I began our family business from our Torbay home 20-years ago and we lead the industry today in terms of the scope of our free in store customer tasting – both the Esprit de la Vallée CDR Signargues and the Esprit de la Vallée Vacqueyras 2016 reds will be on tasting in store this March, so get in and taste for yourself why the critics and our team at FWD Co. are so excited about these Rhone reds. If you’re one of the thousands of FWD Co. customers who reaches for Block 88 Pinot Noir on an almost daily basis, you’ll know how far ahead of the pack it is at the price. When your case has 13 bottles in it, it’s definitely time to grab more than one, since Block 88 2015 will cellar like a trooper for the next 2 to 3 years minimum. Supply is limited to the first 150 thirteen-bottle cases. About Block 88: The modern Auntsfield Estate was founded in 1998 by the Cowley family, but it was merely the latest winemaking chapter on an historic Southern Valleys site. Scotsman David Herd recognised the potential of the land some 125 years earlier, planting his first vines in 1873 (only 100 years ahead of the curve). Herd died in 1905 but his son-in-law continued making wine in the cellar onsite until 1931. While the Cowley family have state-of-the-art equipment, you can still stand in the original cellar today, breathing in the dank earth and nearly 150 years of history.

Thistle Ridge Pinot Noir 2016

95/100 - New World Wine Awards 95/100 - FWD Co. Tasting Panel

93/100 - Wine Orbit 4 Stars - Raymond Chan

There are few Pinots worthy of the name under $15 retail, but Mount Riley can always be relied upon to deliver juicy, spicy cherry and plum fruit on a silky palate. Its soft, silky drinkability has seen it feature in the business class cabins of Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways. A blend of Wairau Valley sites and different clones has given the wine stunning complexity for the price!

The second wine of Greystone, the Waipara winery that’s graduated from precocious up and comer to bona fide NZ wine legend in less than a decade. Thistle Ridge is one of the most serious Pinot second labels we’ve tried, the aromatics simply incredible with dried summer herbs and wild florals before you even get to the abundant fruit. If you want top quality Pinot on a budget, look no further!

Ata Rangi ‘McCrone’ Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014 95/100 - Bob Campbell MW & 95/100 - Sam Kim

Having championed NZ Pinot Noir from the pioneering days… it’s exciting to be “around to witness the emergence of single vineyard - terroir centric Pinot Noirs that definitively taste of their place and winemaking philosophy… a la this stunning Ata Rangi “McCrone Vineyard”. Ata Rangi founders Phyll & Clive Patton and Oregon Vineyard owners Don & Carole McCrone have known each other since 1988, so when the McCrones, decided to grow Pinot Noir in NZ… Martinborough was first choice as was that of Phyll & Clive to express their single vineyard terroir to the nth degree. This 2014 vintage is a complex Pinot with potpourri of Eastern spices, florals, concentrated dark/red - berry/cherry/plum fruits the Martinborough stamp of subtle dried herbs. With bold, but fine tannin like leading Burgundies, plus lithe acidity… it should age beautifully for 15-20 years from vintage.” - Jeff Poole

93/100 - Bob Campbell MW 93/100 - FWD Co. Tasting Panel

95/100 - Bob Campbell MW 18.5/20 - Raymond Chan

We tend to think of Huia for their superb sparkling wine, winemakers Mike and Claire Allan having honed their craft at Veuve Clicquot and Taittinger. This year though, their Pinot Noir really wowed our tasting panel, its organic credentials only adding to its gratification. Exotic and fragrant with vanilla, plum, dark cherry and spice, it’s long, silky and structured – perfect for drinking or cellaring.

Named after the 19th century Wairarapa stalwart for whom Martinborough is named, its Te Kairanga’s flagship Pinot Noir and on a hot run of form lately. Showing everything that is desirable about Martinborough Pinot – plush, spicy red and black cherry fruit with a savoury edge – it sits easily with icons like Escarpment, Ata Rangi and Schubert, but at an even more attractive price.

Clarendelle By Haut-Brion Saint-Émilion 2014

A delightful pale wine in 2016 that is more Provence in style than Pessac, it’s a Merlot dominant blend with Cabernet Franc. Filled with flavours of blood orange, grapefruit and redcurrant, it has a refined, suave finish.

A long, slow ripening period in 2014 produced very classical wines, an especially good year for Cabernet. The nose shows classic Médoc hallmarks of cedar, cassis and plum with fine, architectural tannins on the long, mellow finish.

A very modern style of Médoc, with a pronounced oak signature giving attractive toasty and chocolate notes to go with tobacco and cedar. Fruit weight is a highlight, no wonder James Suckling gave it 92/100 on debut!

This is our panel’s favourite wine of the 2014 shipment. Fragrant, detailed and elegantly medium bodied with a “marine-tinged finish” as Robert Parker says, this is gorgeous Merlot-dominant Saint Émilion through and through.

Te Awa Single Estate Merlot Cabernet 2015

Te Awa’s venerable vineyards The best of both the Gimblett Gravels and Triangle!

18.5/20 - Raymond Chan 5 Stars - Wine NZ Magazine

Te Awa takes its name from Te Awa o Te Atua (The River of God), a reference to the underground streams flowing beneath the vineyard that give the vines their nutrients and the wines their beautiful flavours. Planted in 1992, the vineyard has a foot in both camps, straddling the divide between the Gimblett Gravels and the neighbouring Bridge Pa Triangle. Prevailing wisdom is that blends of the two are often best, since the Triangle has complex soil structures (more sand, clay and red metal) that winemakers feel add dimension to the sometimes steely Gimblett Gravels wines. The Te Awa property had a formidable reputation that attracted billionaire investor Julian Robertson, who began making the incredible Kidnapper Cliffs wines off the property, before the Villa Maria group bought the resurgent property in 2012.

Champion Wine of Show at the Hawke’s Bay Wine Awards in 2017, this sumptuous red was one of the star values of the 2015 vintage – also picked in the coveted Annual Vintage Selection, conducted blind by Master of Wine, Andrew Caillard. A charming and complex mix of blackberries, mulberry and plum, with layers of berry fruit supported by fine tannins and a precise acid line. Textbook stuff.

Wynns Estate Coonawarra Shiraz 2015

One of Aussie’s best values... Back by popular demand!

4 Stars - Huon Hooke

Wynns Coonawarra Estate is one of the truly iconic properties in Australia. Best known for their iconic Cabernets, which largely put the region on the map, they also make sensational Shiraz. The top of the heap is called ‘Michael’ and is of a similar quality to Grange but at a fraction of the price. Indeed, value is a theme that runs through the whole range, from their famous Black Labels all the way to the astonishingly well-priced Shiraz. The Coonawarra style of Shiraz is slightly more fragrant and elegant than the Barossa Valley floor wines that crowd the market. The profile often emphasises red fruits and spice, which give the wines a typicity and food-friendly charm. A 95-point score from James Halliday’s Wine Companion is not to be sniffed at, but you could go on sniffing this wine all day. A sensational bargain, we’re excited to offer you the 2015 vintage in its prime!

With a whopping 95/100 James Halliday for this 2015 vintage, it’s no wonder our customers continue to clamour for this iconic Coonawarra Shiraz. Formerly known as Hermitage in the pre-globalisation days, the wine comes off 30 to 110-year-old vines, accounting for its phenomenal depth and silky tannins. Red berries, spice and chocolate, this is undeniably delicious.

Da Vinci Riserva Chianti DOCG 2013 93/100 - FWD Co. Tasting Panel

All Chianti is from a specific region of Tuscany and must be mostly made from the noble grape Sangiovese. But to qualify for Riserva, the wine must be aged for at least 2 years prior to release. GOLD MEDAL

Under the Tuscan Sun What makes Chianti so special? Like most Italian wines, Chiantis come alive with food, and the acid and tannin is normally pretty high thanks to the Sangiovese grape. Whether it’s your basic Chianti DOCG or more complex Riserva, or you take a step up into the Chianti Classico region, you can expect to find variations on the theme: lots of cherry and floral characters as well as earthy, nutty and leathery notes in the better ones. Every bottle, no matter what level, should have a black cockerill on the neck to guarantee authenticity. The rooster is a nod to a 13th century story that Florence and Siena decided the boundary between their towns by sending knights racing off on horseback at dawn. When they met on the road, that would be the boundary. The starter’s gun would be the cock’s crow… the canny folk of Florence starved their black rooster so he would crow early, giving their rider a headstart and allowing him to annex miles and miles of Chianti vineyards from Siena!

Of all the Spanish imports, we can’t think of another that offers such whopping fruit concentration and body for such a modest price. Monastrell is known as Mataro or Mourvedre in other places, but the nett result is the same: a vine that thrives in hot climates and produces wines with big colour, big flavour and big tannin. Make this your winter quaffer and you’ll never look back…

Rioja is the most famous of all Spanish wines and the Reserva designation can often provide the best value for those looking for a spicy Tempranillo hit. Over 30 years on, Coleraine is still without peer in terms of consistency and age-ability, the best vintages (of which there are many) improving for at least 15 years and living much longer if well stored. 2016 marks the fourth straight exceptional release, the hottest February since 1998 turning up the opulence and concentration and making it delicious right from day one.

Te Mata Estate ‘Awatea’ Merlot/Cabernet 2016 To call Awatea a second wine feels a touch unfair, since it’s a 5-Star wine in its own right. The main difference between the wines is that the fruit and tannin is not quite as compact on Awatea, not a bad thing, since Coleraine really needs a decade to show its best. Awatea is just an early drinking version of Coleraine, and in 2016 it’s fragrant and superbly silky with pristine fruit purity.

Pickering’s Original 1947 Gin The signature velvety soft, luscious mouth feel of the incredible Original is retained but the array of meticulously selected Indian spices is breath taking. Cardamom, coriander, anise and cloves are prominent but this memorable gin is still fresh, clean, refreshing and balanced, modern and classical.

Pickering’s gin is hand crafted in the boutique Summerhall Distillery in central Edinburgh, Scotland. This famous little distillery is located only 15 minutes from the Royal Mile near the famous castle. The Pickering’s story begins with an original Bombay recipe from 1947 that is proudly displayed at the distillery which had been a carefully kept family secret for over 66 years. In 2013 Marcus Pickering and Mathew Gammell decided that it was time to use this precious recipe and Pickering’s original gin was launched to great critical acclaim. At the heart of their ultra- smooth gins are the stills in which they are made, Emily and Gert. Named after the maternal great-grandmothers of the founders, rumors they were like the stills, fat and smelt of gin are roundly refuted. The unique custom designed bain marie heating system of these stills has enabled the botanicals to have a slow luxurious simmer which has created complex gins of great beauty and depth.
