Message from the Principal: At Yeovil College University Centre, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity of university level education and we are proud to be able to offer you high-quality experience from our modern facilities at your local College in Yeovil. That belief drives and inspires our teaching, our staff, our students, and the businesses we work with. We see it as our obligation to the community, not only to the current generation but to future learners, too, and that passion has been commended by the QAA in their Higher Education Review in Spring 2016. There is more on the brilliant outcome of the review later on in this prospectus. It is our position in the community that led to our first graduation procession this year, from the campus to the Octagon Theatre where the ceremony was held, which gave us a chance to celebrate students' success with the whole town. Taking the decision to progress to a degree or professional qualification, or to return to study after a period of time, is a big decision and we want to make sure we do our bit to merge challenge and opportunity so that you, our students of the future, can reach your potential. Bournemouth University (BU) is an innovative University which offers a range of high quality courses geared towards specific professions. A student-centered learning environment encourages intellectual achievement as well as employability – something born out of the University’s consistently excellent record of graduates moving into their chosen careers. What does it mean if I am studying a Bournemouth University validated course? Validated courses are offered in partnership between Yeovil College University Centre and Bournemouth University. Students enrol directly with the University Centre rather than BU and do not have access to BU’s learning resources and services. Instead, students will use the learning resources and services at the Yeovil College University Centre, details of which are included in this prospectus.

Students on BU validated courses will receive a Bournemouth University award on successful completion of the course and Bournemouth University is ultimately responsible for the academic standards and quality of its awards.

If you enrol on a course franchised by the University of the West of England (UWE), you also become a UWE student, enabling you to access their facilities. The University of the West of England, in Bristol, is passionate about providing Higher Education opportunities to the local community. The focus for this activity is the UWE Federation – a group of colleges of Further Education who are working with UWE to develop courses with a distinct vocational emphasis and strong links with local employers. At Yeovil College University Centre, you can study a course validated by UWE which gives you an excellent opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills that will prepare you for your future career. You may also have the opportunity to progress to an Honours degree at UWE.

If you enrol on a course validated by the University of Gloucestershire, you also become a University of Gloucestershire student, enabling you to access agreed services and facilities. The University of Gloucestershire is a thriving and diverse community of over 10,000 students, based over three campuses, two in Cheltenham and one in Gloucester, and is also expanding its student numbers within its partner colleges, including Yeovil College University Centre. The University offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes from Economics to Illustration and Performing Arts to Teacher Training as well as short courses. The courses are designed to offer flexible learning options for all its students to assist them with finding their career path. More than 5,000 students choose to study at Yeovil College and the Yeovil College University Centre each year, completing a wide range of qualifications which will help them progress towards success in their chosen careers. From introductory courses to Master’s degrees, Yeovil College can offer something for everyone, providing the whole community with relevant and valuable personal development. In terms of University courses, Yeovil College has offered Higher Education provision for close to 30 years. Over time this has grown extensively, establishing the University Centre in 2004 (now formally known as the Yeovil College University Centre). Thanks to close working relationships with industry and employers across a wide range of professional sectors, students studying Higher Education programmes within Yeovil College University Centre not only have access to world-class courses, but the added benefit of good relationships with the industry their programme is centred upon. This is one of the reasons that more and more people choose to study for their Higher Education qualification at the University Centre – from across the region, nationally, and internationally. Working with over 700 regional, national and international employers and the local community, Yeovil College constantly reviews its courses, regularly introducing new qualifications, including Apprenticeships, A Levels, vocational courses, degrees and professional training. As a result, at Yeovil College you can gain the skills and develop the personal attributes you will need in your future career.

The College’s facilities are also centred around student success, and enhancing the student experience. In supporting Higher Education learners there is specific provision – such as the HE Study Centre, Higher Education Lounge – for studying, using computers, silent study, wifi access, in addition to spaces to chill out and relax. This is on top of other resources to support the HE student experience, such as the on-site gym, sports facilities, Students’ Union, hair & beauty salon, licensed bar & restaurant, cafés, and other eateries. Specialist facilities for University Centre programmes include: 100 seat Lecture Theatre; vast Learning Resource Centre with e-library and e-journal facilities; 24-7 access to College IT facilities through a Remote Desktop (including access to Microsoft programs); active Virtual Learning Environment – to provide onestop information for all University Centre learners in addition to programme-level resource; computer hardware lab, including 3D printing and robotics; the Leonardo Creative Building – including dedicated start of the art Mac Suites for Graphic Design, Fine Art, Photography and Media Studios; and the Advanced Engineering Centre – complete with specialist testing and production equipment which reflects industry standards and new innovations. THE BEST IN THE WEST Yeovil College University Centre is the Best in the West following the official Higher Education Review’s recent inspection carried out by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). No college has achieved a better result, with only one other college matching Yeovil College University Centre’s tremendous achievement. The reviewers passed the centre on every single element of the provision and highlighted elements of good practice, such as the relevance of the curriculum delivery and the extensive support for professional development of teaching staff, so you can be absolutely certain that you are getting a great educational experience. The report also highlighted the far-reaching opportunities for students to develop their employability skills thanks to the strong and productive links with local and regional employers. Students want to know that they will receive a good education but also that they will be able to get a job once they finish and the QAA found that Yeovil College University Centre “has embedded student employability into its provisions. What can I study at the Yeovil College University Centre? You can study from a choice of nearly 50 Higher Education courses, all designed with you and local employers in mind. This means that the majority of our courses are vocational and relate to jobs, career progression and local industry. What qualifications can I get? Through hard work and commitment, you can gain one of a range of qualifications, including professional accreditations, such as Association of Accounting Technicians, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants or Chartered Institute of Marketing status, Higher National Diplomas, Foundation, Honours or Master’s degrees, teaching qualifications, or Diplomas at Level 5 or above. It all depends on what you want to achieve, so come to one of our open events to see how we can help you. What are Foundation degrees (FdAs/FdSCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs)? As well as being standalone qualifications, Foundation degrees and HNDs are courses which represent the first two years of an Honours degree programme. Once you achieve your Foundation degree or HND, you can often apply for a further year of study to ‘top up’ your qualification to a full Honours degree.

Examples include: • Graphic Design students work on live briefs for local and national companies throughout their course, designing logos, posters, and other materials. Recently, they have worked with the Red Cross and Taunton Racecourse. • Sports students benefit from regular visits from high profile sports persons willing to share their experiences. Guests have included former students such as former England Rugby team captain, Catherine Spencer, and professional footballer, Chris Weale. • Media students have produced promotional films for various organisations, including the NHS and National Trust. • Health & Social Care students volunteer at local care homes and have been highly praised for their hard work in the community. ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION Access to Higher Education (HE) aims to give people with significant life experience a fresh chance at education. It is a nationally recognised qualification representing an alternative to the traditional A Level route to university. As well as giving you the chance to gain the academic skills you will need for higher level study, the courses aim to support students so that they increase in confidence and develop interpersonal skills. There is no upper age limit for these programmes, though there may be programme-specific entry requirements.

This is a course designed to provide a secure science platform to move onto higher education courses with a science component. Previous students have progressed onto bio-science, midwifery and other relevant courses.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION - HUMANITIES Access to Higher Education (HE) aims to give adults (19+) with significant life experience a fresh chance at education. It is a nationally recognised qualification representing an alternative to the traditional A Level route to university. AAT DIPLOMA (LEVEL 4) ACCOUNTING If you have successfully completed the Level 3 Diploma in Accounting and want to achieve a Technicianlevel Accounting qualification, this course is an excellent choice. It is suitable for people working at all levels of finance and allows you to gain practical accounting skills that can be used in the workplace. You will complete four modules covering Financial Statements, Financial Performance, Budgeting, Internal Control and Accounting Systems as well as two optional modules on Auditing and/or Taxation. The course is sponsored by three main accountancy bodies and is a nationally recognised qualification.

FINANCE/LOANS When going to university, there are two main expenses you will need to think about; tuition fees and the cost of living. UK students can apply for tuition fees and cost of living support, while EU students can request help with tuition fees. Support is available from Government and universities. All support is ‘means tested.’ Eligibility for funding is determined by the level of individual or family income and capital. How much are tuition fees? Will I need to budget for anything else? While at university, you will need to remember to budget for living expenses. If you plan to move away from home to live nearer the University Centre Yeovil, you need to think about the cost of: • Accommodation, including bills such as electricity, gas, internet access, telephone etc. • Food • Transport The average cost of these depends upon where you live and your lifestyle, but it is important to budget and not live beyond your income.

Government support Financial assistance in the form of loans, and some grants, is available to all new learners, from England, wishing to undertake Higher Education studies. Whilst Tuition Fee Loans are available to all students wishing to study core Higher Education courses (Higher National Certificates, Higher National Diplomas, Foundation Degrees, Bachelors Degrees). Individuals wishing to study Part-Time are only able to access Tuition Fee Loans. Learners from within the European Union can also access the Tuition Fee Loan system. Student Loan for Maintenance Paid directly to students termly for cost of living expenses. Full Time learners living at home can apply for up to £6,904 per annum. If you intend to live away from home the maintenance loan rises to £8,200. Each is per year of study. Any application for a maintenance loan may require you to give details of your household income. Loan Applications must be made for each year of study. Students are liable for their full tuition fees from the moment they commence a course. GRANTS FOR FULL-TIME STUDENTS Full-time students from England may also be eligible for means-tested grants. While you will need to repay student loans, you do not repay grants. Childcare Grant To help with childcare costs for children under 15 or under 17 if they have special educational needs Parents’ Learning Allowance For students with dependent children, not necessarily paying for childcare Adult Dependents Grant For students who have an adult who depends on them financially Disabled Students’ Allowance Funding for students holding a diagnosed condition that meets the definition of disability under the Equality Act 2010. The financial support provided will be based on your individual needs, and not on household income. Part-time and postgraduate students are also eligible to apply for DSAs, which will be awarded on a pro-rata basis. Loans for part-time students New part-time students may be able to claim a tuition fee loan to cover fees. Eligibility depends on the ‘intensity’ of your part-time course being at least 25% of a full-time course. For example if your course takes six years to complete and the full-time equivalent takes three, the intensity will be 50%. Unfortunately, part-time students cannot claim maintenance loans or grants at time of print. How much money can I claim? This depends upon your household income and whether you have any child or adult dependents. If you live with your parents, their income will also be taken into account. Each Student Finance awarding body has a calculator on its website to help you estimate what you can claim.

How do I pay back my loan? Full-time students only start repaying their loan(s) after they have finished their studies and are earning over £21,000 a year (correct at time of print). Parttime students who earn over £21,000 a year will start repaying their loan after three years, even if they have not finished their course. After 30 years, regardless of what you have already repaid, the debt is wiped out. For the latest information, please visit the Student Finance website for your country (see below). When should I apply? You can apply for student loans and other financial help from the Government once you have identified the course for which you are likely to be granted a place. This contains a regularly updated list of local accommodation available. Preston Hall Preston Hall is privately-managed student accommodation, situated five minutes’ walk from the main University Centre and within walking distance of the town centre with its main shopping and entertainment facilities and Tesco Superstore. The Yeovil College campus is less than ten minutes’ walk away and there is also a bus service into the town centre. The accommodation includes: Single refurbished rooms on a self-catered basis, equipped with:

When is the accommodation available? The agreement you enter into with the owners of the accommodation will allow you to move into your room at 12 noon on the Friday before the start of the autumn term. The agreement will be valid until the end of the academic year and will terminate two weeks before the beginning of the following academic year to allow for re-painting and cleaning. Students are expected to stay for the entire three terms of the academic year and can stay in the property at their own discretion during the holidays. How much will it cost me?* Your rent will be approximately £85 - £95 per week dependant on room size and location. Payment is termly and payable by three post-dated cheques. Cheques should be dated as follows: 1st September, 1st January and 1st April for each relevant year and should be returned with the agreement and the deposit.

LEARNING RESOURCES & ADVISORS The Higher Education (HE) Learning Resource Advisors (LRAs) are based around the College and University Centre and are available to support all HE students in a variety of ways. The LRAs are a recognised point of contact for students needing help to find supporting resources for assignments and dissertations. Support is available in the following areas: • Helping students find and use library resources, both hard copy and electronic • Delivery of sessions from the HE tutorial programme to develop sound information and research skills, including Harvard Referencing, evaluating resources, report writing, database searching, using e-books, avoiding plagiarism • Dissertation support via tailored dissertation workshops, use of Inter-Library Loan system and individual sessions • User education and support in use of electronic resources provided by partner universities • User education in use of Moodle, our virtual Learning Environment (VLE)

HE Student Liaison Officer The Higher Education Student Liaison Officer is there to ensure a co-ordinated approach to student support at the University Centre. As well as knowing you have access to independent advice and support, you can make your voice heard through the Union and give valuable feedback to the University Centre. What sort of events have taken place the University Centre? Staff and students at the University Centre have been involved in lots of different activities and projects in recent years. These have included collecting for charities such as Amnesty International, World Aids Day, the Salvation Army and Somerset Flood Relief, contributing to student magazines and volunteering at a retirement home. Is there a Freshersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Fair? Yes. Every September, there is a freshersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fair at the University Centre attended by lots of different organisations and departments. STUDENT EXCELLENCE Our students’ achievements are celebrated every year with a graduation ceremony attended by friends, family and invited guests representing the local community and key employers. In 2016, more than 150 people from across the region graduated from the Yeovil College University Centre. The annual Harry Livingstone Award for Management Excellence was presented to Ian Yell. The award recognises outstanding achievement by a Business and Management student and is presented in memory of Harry Livingstone by the Yeovil and District Branch of the Chartered Management Institute.

The Wayne Minter Award for Engineering Student of the Year went to both Myles Pinkett and Ian Press. The award recognises outstanding achievement by an Engineering student and is presented in memory of Wayne Minter. Jacqueline Dean, Chair of the Yeovil College Corporation, said “It is wonderful to see so many students graduating this year. The University Centre, here in Yeovil, continues to develop success, giving students of all ages the opportunity to continue their studies and develop their skills closer to home. The University Centre continues to develop every year, offering a broad range and choice of subjects, in response to employer and business demands for new skills and knowledge.”

The Outstanding Trainee Teacher of the Year award went to Shaun Powell for his achievements and commitment to study.

Research and Innovation Like any Higher Education institution, the University Centre aims to be at the forefront of research, ensuring that staff are well informed and up-to-date with developments in their area of expertise. On approaching the Fiveways roundabout, ignore the Yeovil College entrance on your left. Continue to the roundabout and take the third exit (Preston Road). Go straight ahead at the first and second sets of traffic lights. The University Centre is the second turning on the left.
