9. Yeovil College Annual Review 2014/15 1.
Welcome to our review of Yeovil College’s performance during the 2014/2015 academic year. Another Successful Year 2014/15 has been a busy year at Yeovil College with some great successes to shout about, tempered with our share of adversity, which we have tackled head on with honesty and transparency. Academic success continues to be strong, matched by the achievement of our vocational students. Student progression at Yeovil College is outstanding with 97% of our students successfully going on to Further or Higher Education, Apprenticeships or related employment, something that we are very proud of. We have seen a significant refurbishment in facilities to enhance the learners’ experience. The culture of the college is one that puts the student customer at the heart of all of its decisions which has resulted in 98% of our students stating that they would recommend Yeovil College to a friend. The energy and enthusiasm amongst students and staff is brilliant and is driven by the desire to always achieve their best which has created a dynamic atmosphere around the campus. The College benefits from an outstanding board of governors and senior team that have fully supported and challenged me to make Yeovil College the best in the sector. The town’s major stakeholders all have a great enthusiasm and support for the College and want it to succeed, and that makes a big difference. We’ve built a great relationship with many local employers such as Finmeccanica (AgustaWestland), Yarlington Housing Group, the Hospital, South Somerset District Council, Yeovil Town Football Club and the Western Gazette, and since the launch of the construction centre, our relationships with companies such as Bradfords, Screwfix and Howdens continue to grow. Our job, as a college for the community, is to support local people for their post-16 education, by providing them with an outstanding college on their doorstep, and we’re well on the way to achieving that. We have become a college that is flexible to the needs of our community, providing innovative solutions and is forward-thinking in our approach. Our ultimate goal is to achieve Outstanding status from Ofsted (currently Good) and to make Yeovil College the first choice for all learners in the region. We’re looking forward to another good year in 2015/16. John Evans, Principal

The Beaminster and the Sir John Colfox Sixth Form Partnership Yeovil College has entered into an exciting new partnership with The Beaminster and the Sir John Colfox Sixth Form to extend the range of opportunities open to their students. As part of the partnership, students are being offered the choice of studying courses at Level 3 such as Engineering, Health and Social Care, Child Care, Applied Science and ICT amongst others. At Level 2 students will also be able to follow a range of vocational courses such as Beauty Therapy, Catering, Electrical Installation, Plumbing and Child Care. Given the challenges with rural transport, the partnership will arrange for students to have a direct bus from Bridport, stopping in Beaminster, and then on to Yeovil College. The cost will be less than students currently pay and they will only need to be in college 2 or 3 days a week, enabling them to spend the rest of the time in the Beaminster and Colfox Sixth Form. The Sixth Form will offer personal support, careers planning and consolidation in English and maths (if necessary) together with planned work experience. This will wrap around the vocational teaching at the college, allowing the Sixth Form to be more inclusive and offer tailored support.

Apprenticeships 408 new apprentices started their training during the year, making a total of over 1,000 apprentices in training. We held a successful Apprenticeship recruitment event during National Apprenticeship Week. This was a chance to engage local employers and potential learners, and showcase the great work the college is doing in filling the skills gap and getting learners ready for work. We are now delivering training in areas from Cornwall to London, and up to the Midlands. New frameworks are now being delivered in Marketing, Exercise & Fitness, IT and Engineering. Finmeccanica (formerly AgustaWestlands) have renewed their commitment to apprenticeships and have more than doubled their numbers this year. This figure looks set to grow each year as they look to the future and take into account an ageing work force and a chance to increase capacity. Our monthly meetings with Finmeccanica will further strengthen the relationship with the college. We have also launched Traineeship programmes, offering young people the chance to develop their employability skills through a work experience based programme.

Working With Local Businesses and the Community
It was another outstanding year for Yeovil College continuing the great work with regional businesses and strengthening the partnership with Yeovil Chamber of Commerce. Yarlington Housing Association has been a particularly close partner this year, with community workshops in Hospitality, Construction and Motor Vehicle, and the college involved with the Residents’ Day. The Yarlington Housing Staff also achieved their Maintenance Operations qualification, which was presented by TV personality, Tommy Walsh. Yeovil College has successfully delivered on-site training to many companies, for example, Professional Cookery at Oscar Mayer. As part of the local community each Study Programme area has been challenged to commit 100 hours to a community project. Our Construction Curriculum Area, for example, has worked with the English Cricket Board (ECB) to build and donate 40 picnic benches for use at local cricket clubs, or our Hair & Beauty curriculum area taking their services on the road to care homes for the elderly.
Yeovil Town Football Club (YTFC) Academy We are delighted to have been appointed as Yeovil Town Football Club prefered educational partner. A new YTFC academy programme for talented football players has been launched. There are a number of scholarships available to aspiring professional footballers, who will study a Level 3 BTEC qualification and train with professional staff at Yeovil Town Football Club. Players ranging from under 9s to under 18s have signed up to the academy for the current season, and it is their sporting talent that will be nurtured to provide fantastic opportunities as part of this special relationship between the college and Yeovil Town Football Club. This existing partnership has resulted in many students having the opportunity of related work experience helping YTFC to create an outstanding match day experience.

BTEC Extended Diploma Sport student Lily Kitto was selected for the Under 19s British hockey team. Last year, she was not able to take part due to torn ligaments in her hip, but that made her more determined to succeed this year. Lily is also a Junior National Young Coach and ambassador for England Hockey, encouraging young people to participate in the sport, and she also coaches the Yeovil and Sherborne under 12s team. In recognition of her work, Lily was named Yeovil College Sportswoman of the Year at the Further Education awards in 2014. Yeovil College’s Men’s Football team won the Association of Colleges South West Regional Football championships. On the back of the SW Final win, BTEC Diploma (Level 3) Sport and Football Academy programme student, Jordan Storey, was selected for the England Schools U18s Football team. He was one of just 64 regional players from across the country picked to try out for the England Schools team, from which a final national squad of just 18 was selected. There was further success in the summer when two Yeovil College students represented Somerset county at the English Schools Athletics Association (ESAA) Championships at Gateshead International Stadium. Sprinter Brett Harrison qualified in the 200m and Jordan Davies in the Shot Put. This partnership has led to successes including a silver medal at the UK men’s colleges’ national football competition earlier this year and our women’s football team winning the Somerset Colleges Championship. We’re looking forward to working with Yeovil Town going forwards, and also to seeing their community team move into offices on the Mudford Road campus. This year, talented sports men and women applying to Yeovil College can also apply for a sports scholarships, worth £500 over the academic year.

Our Staff The 2014/2015 academic year was in fairness a challenging year for ‘People’ at Yeovil College. With the changes to funding imposed upon the sector and as with most big organisations where staffing is the greatest cost to the organisation, we had to make some difficult but essential decisions in relation to staffing at the College. From early in the year, all request to fill a vacancy was carefully scrutinised to ensure that every opportunity to safeguard jobs at a later date was taken. That said, we had 44 new starters between September 2014 and August 2015 who have brought fresh ideas and new approaches to work. During the 2014/15 accademic year, 60 people left the College by way of voluntary redundancy following the staffing review and re-structure during the summer term. Whilst we were sad to see so many people leave us, many saw it as a chance to change the direction of their career and pursue different opportunities, or the chance to retire early, when financially this would not have been possible without pension benefits and the financial benefits of the voluntary redundancy agreement. The new management structure is now set up to meet the needs of local industry. Throughout the year, the focus on further improving innovative Teaching, Learning and Assessment continued. Numerous events were attended by all teaching staff designed to deliver targeted CPD on set themes. The Teaching and Learning Theme group led many ‘sharing of best practice’ events across the year. The drive to create the best teaching and learning in the sector will continue in 2015/16. The institutional culture has been transformed to create a can-do customer focused ethos across the whole College. The student customer is at the heart of all decisions and continually improving the student experience was central to the development of the strategic plan.

Forwards To The Future As we move forward, there are various exciting projects on the horizon, not least the new Career College, working in close partnership with Yeovil District Hospital. We are developing a shared vision to raise aspiration in both young people and adults. Together, we will help those who would like to gain specialist knowledge, skills and experience in the health and care sector that will enable them to enjoy successful careers in this industry, whilst helping to reduce a local and national skills shortage in healthcare professionals. The provision will be enhanced by the ‘Vanguard’ status of the Trust, therefore opening up opportunities for both learners and often ‘untapped’ areas of employment, whilst giving a health and care service to those in our community. The project launched in September 2015, meaning current and new learners will be able to benefit and learn in a ‘real’ healthcare environment at Yeovil District Hospital and through a wide range of employer work experience opportunities. Ultimately, our goal is a purpose-built building for the project and we will be fundraising for that. Construction courses continue to go from strength to strength, and we will continue our work in being a leading training provider in Somerset and North Dorset as we look to the Annual Review at the end of 2016.
