Embracing adventure I H AVE ALWAYS been inspired by the words of the Finnish poet and geographer Aaro Hellaakoski (1893-1952): “Tietä käyden tien on vanki, vapaa on vain umpihanki,” which essentially translate to “You are a prisoner of the road you follow. Only on the untrodden snowdrift are you free.” I have understood these words to mean that if we embark on adventures we will learn and embrace new experiences – and challenge ourselves to get out of our comfort zones. You are free to choose the road you take. Travel is one of the best ways to expand your horizons: With Finnair’s network of more than 100 destinations in Europe, 19 in Asia, and eight in North America, we offer plenty of opportunities to experience new cultures. Fittingly, the theme of this issue of Blue Wings is fearlessness and we have dedicated these pages to unique expressions of bravery from around the world, from Japan’s ama freedivers and New York City’s adventurous street style to female DJs who are reshaping the dance music business. Wishing you wonderful new adventures, Arja Suominen

The TeaHouse of Wehmais has more than 100 varieties of tea on the menu.

Anna GrotenfeltPaunonen is one of Finland’s first tea sommeliers.

My cup of tea TE A – IS IT AN EV ERY DAY STA PL E or an elegant extravagance? It depends on who you ask, says tea sommelier Anna Grotenfelt-Paunonen, who believes tea is a beverage for all occasions, summer or winter. It even makes for a great cocktail. Grotenfelt-Paunonen grew up in a tea-drinking family, which is a rare thing in a country with the world’s heaviest per capita coffee consumption. “I never really learned to drink coffee. I used to drink tea but wasn’t a big connoisseur,” she reflects. It took time for her intimate relationship with tea to develop as deep as it is today. On her family’s manor in Juva in eastern Finland, she runs Finland’s only English-style tea house, the TeaHouse of Wehmais. “My mum used to run a fashion shop and I thought that a tea house would go well with it.

When I decided to go for tea, I wanted to do it right. That’s why I completed tea sommelier studies at the International Tea Masters’ Association.” Refining her knowledge and palate hasn’t come easy. It has taken hours and hours of tasting teas of different temperatures and brewing times with various food pairings. “Tea is like wine. The soil, climate, cultivation, and production methods affect the quality and taste,” says Grotenfelt-Paunonen. The TeaHouse of Wehmais has more than 100 varieties of tea. Grotenfelt-Paunonen likes to advise her clients in choosing the right tea and is especially happy when she finds the perfect tea to win over a devoted coffee drinker. If a “tea conversion” is not on the cards, she’ll courteously serve a cup of coffee if you ask nicely. 

illages are scarce and hotels are even rarer up in the northernmost reaches of Finnish Lapland. But the few that are hidden away certainly make the most of the spectacular location. Top among them is Wilderness Hotel Nellim, where cosy cottage life meets an energetic, outdoorsy lifestyle. The hotel is the perfect reflection of its owners, Mari and Jouko Lappalainen of Wilderness Hotels and Safaris. “We are active people who love nature as well as a bit of luxury,” says the busy couple, who run a small empire of four hotels covering 25 hectares of land.

Open year-round, the busiest period for Nellim is winter, when the temperature drops and the Northern Light chasers arrive. But the Aurora Borealis also puts on a dazzling show before the snowy season, making autumn with its milder temperatures and vibrant colours an equally great time for a visit. While the hosts actively encourage guests to go aurora-spotting, the Aurora Lakeside Villa is a luxurious log cabin where guests can observe the Northern Lights from the comfort of their own beds. In addition to the amazing night-time light shows, the all-inclusive hotel offers both visitors and their credit cards a well-deserved rest. Readymade packages comprise a variety of activities from snowmobiling and snowshoeing to cross-country skiing and husky safaris. After an adrenalin-fuelled day, the evenings are perfect for unwinding by an open fire and enjoying a tasty meal without the distraction of television. “We believe in seizing the day,” says Jouko Lappalainen. “And we encourage our visitors to do the same.” 

Nagoya (NGO) six times a week and to Osaka (KIX) daily; Toba city is a 2.5-hour train ride from both destinations.

S

anayo Matsui, 66, looks out at the waves lapping against the rocks in a small bay on the Shima peninsula, close to Toba in southern Japan, and shakes her head. “We won’t be diving today,” she says. “The sea is a bit too rough.” Instead, Sanayo and her fellow ama diver, Mie Nakasero, settle down in their ama goya, or hut, by the shore and warm their hands on an open fire, known as the kamado. Sanayo has 48 years of experience as an ama, one of a dwindling number of female freedivers whose culture and traditions are believed to date back more than three millennia. “Weather conditions mean that we can only dive about 60 days a year, and then only between 60 and 90 minutes a day,” says Sanayo. “We might dive to a depth of anywhere from three to 20 metres, and up to 50 seconds on each dive.” An ama’s catch might include abalone, turban snails, sea cucumber, sea urchins, lobster, oysters, seaweed (a Japanese staple), and, on lucky days, a pearl or two. They use a kaginomi, which is a hooked chisel to prise the shellfish from the rock and part the shell. On a good day each ama can collect up to 13 kilos, worth as much as 135,000 yen (1,000 euros), depending on the catch. >

Divers pay homage to a number of Shinto shrines for safe dives.

NOVEMBER 2018 BLUE WINGS 29

Originally ama would dive naked but during the 20th century they adopted a traditional outfit comprising a longsleeved, hooded white jumpsuit and single-screen goggles. Most divers now opt for a wet suit with a belt of fivekilo weights that helps to expedite their descent to the seabed. Dives can start from the shore or in a group from a boat, and ama etiquette requires each diver to give space for and distance to others in their vicinity.

Divers cook part of their catch over a grill in their kamado cabin.

BID FOR UNESCO LISTING

A single dive can last up to about 50 seconds.

Michiko Nakamura inspects her catch after a dive.

30 BLUE WINGS NOVEMBER 2018

This female-only means of livelihood was once common right across Japan, but only about 2,000 remain active in 18 prefectures. The Mia prefecture, containing Toba and Shima, is home to more than 750 ama. Younger women are less inclined to take up the ancient practice so the numbers are declining annually. The wind has finally died down and Michiko Nakamura and Sayuri Nakamura emerge from the sea with baskets brimming with shellfish and seaweed. After shedding their wet suits they settle in the ama goya, peering into the flames, joking and chatting. “Ama diving has always been in my family but I never really thought I would end up being an ama,” says Michiko. “We come here to the ama goya after a dive to warm up and to talk about what went well, what we found, or couldn’t find.” Most ama seem passionate about diving, although all ama can remember at least one occasion when they were truly scared, Michiko recalls. “Once I was diving at a depth of about four metres and got caught in the rope attached to my basket. I was on my last breath when I got the attention of another diver who came to help me untangle the rope. Most health issues come later in life, especially with breathing problems. It can be dangerous. But the money can be very good,” she says. There is still a sense of community in these fishing villages, where everyone helps out. Michiko points out out that the practice is as much to do with tradition as financial gain. A move to get ama diving listed with UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status, inspired by the dwindling number of divers, confirms a sense of cultural pride in this unique source of livelihood. 

TH E TAM O K VA L L EY is a few hours drive from Tromsø in northern Norway where there are hundreds of mountains for freeskiers to conquer. Háhttagáisi is one of the more recognisable mountains in the valley. It takes hours to ascend to the top. On this “warm” and sunny day, I wore only a t-shirt (and ski pants, of course) on the ascent, but once I reached the peak the climate changed and on went the down jacket. The descent is amazing in spite of the variable snow conditions.

Follow in the footsteps of pilgrims and legionnaires on Italy’s new Wonder Ways.

n the outskirts of Itri, a sleepy, terracotta-roofed city in the Italian region of Lazio, the moss-encrusted wheel ruts worn into the Via Francigena pay testament to its venerable history. All of the Roman Empire’s major highways radiated outward from its capital. Thanks to the recent launch of Italy’s so-called “Wonder Ways”−a quintessential quintet of restored Italian pilgrimage routes that includes the Via Francigena −the expression “all roads lead to Rome” now rings true for a growing number of hikers exploring the stunning sights (and tastes) of Umbria, Lazio, Tuscany, and Marche. Perched on a crumbling stone wall high above the Via Francigena (pronounced “Francheegena”), young Italian hiker Laura Ruggeri takes a break to survey the surrounding groves of withered olive trees. Running between Itri and the nearby city of Fondi, the trail follows the route of the even older Appian Way, a razor-straight line of Roman p aving that bisects the soft contours of the idyllic Lazio countryside.

You can simply pick up a map and guidebook and travel independently at your own pace. 40 BLUE WINGS NOVEMBER 2018

“Nature, culture, cuisine, exercise, and the opportunity to meet fellow travellers and local residents, there’s something for everyone on the Wonder Ways,” says Ruggeri. “You don’t even have to be in great shape or religious to appreciate them.”

HOLY TRAILS The Wonder Ways were launched in late 2016 as a smaller-scale Italian counterpart to Spain’s renowned Camino de Santiago, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed pilgrimage route. Highlights along the Via Francigena, Via Di Francesco, Via Amerina, Cammino Francescano Della Marcia/Via Lauretana, and Cammino di San Benedetto include the magnificent medieval towns and cities of Siena, Assisi, Gubbio, Itri, and Anagni, the ruggedly beautiful scenery of the Apennine mountains, the volcanic lakes Lake Albano and Lake Bolsena, and the Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo. The five routes are promoted by a collection of more than 200 hospitality, food, and service com-

This offers tailored routes and packages to everyone from religious pilgrims and those seeking for a spiritual experience to serious hikers, bikers, families, and even horseback riders. Many of those looking to explore the Wonder Ways simply pick up a map and guidebook and travel independently at their own pace. Regardless of your mode of transport or reason for travel, the emphasis is far more on connecting with local people and places than keeping to any strict timetable. “American marathon runner John Bingham once said that ‘the joy is in the journey, not the

destination,’” says Daniele Ruggieri, a guide and hiking enthusiast from Nemi, a picturesque Lazio town on the route of the Via Francigena. “This is the essence of the Wonder Ways.”

MAKING THE CONNECTION Today the Wonder Ways network includes restored and well-signposted sections of the Via Francigena north and south of Rome. But the trail itself extends all the way from the English city of Canterbury, through France and Switzerland (Via Francigena acutally means “the road that comes from France”), to Rome, and then onward to Jerusalem. The official history of the Via Francigena begins with Sigeric, an archbishop of Canterbury who travelled to Rome in 990 A.D. to receive honours from Pope John XV. In days gone by it was not simply a single road, but made up of several possible routes that changed over the centuries as commerce and the popularity of pilgrimages waxed and waned. Rather than taking the shortest distance between cities, it connected abbeys and monasteries where travellers could seek shelter and food. Many places along the contemporary Via Francigena still evoke this sense of hospitality and a selfless desire to help hikers and walkers perform a journey of personal discovery. Those arriving at the Abbey of San Magno on the outskirts of Fondi typically receive treatment so benevolent it can revitalise the weariest of travellers.

Choosing to explore the Wonder Ways can mean walking for a few days or a few months.

Founded in 533 A.D. at the foot of Monte Arcano, the abbey is situated close to a spring that flows into the nearby Licola River. It is this burbling brook which nourishes the abbey’s bountiful vegetable gardens, and from which head monk Francesco Fiorillo takes the water with which he greets new arrivals. “Everyone is welcome here, regardless of age, background, race, or religion,” says the jovial, twinkly-eyed Italian. “The Wonder Ways continue the tradition of travelling with your heart and soul, and discovering something about yourself that you never knew before.” Fiorillo’s ministrations don’t stop at a refreshing draft from the local spring, however. The monk frequently washes travellers’ feet by hand, dispensing water from a copper jug before wiping them dry with a pristine white towel. Only those who have just hiked for kilometres under a cloudless Lazio sky will know how divine this feels. Choosing to explore the Wonder Ways can mean walking for a few days or a few months. Michel Goletti has just arrived at the Abbey of San Magno with his dog Laika. Having prepared for five years, the Belgian is hiking all the way from Inverness to Santa Maria di Leuca in southern Italy. Taking in most of the Via Francigena, his 5,400-kilometre, 200-day hike will raise money for a Belgian charity. “It sounds like a cliché but my journey has already been a life-changing experience,” says Goletti. “The encounters I’ve had with complete strangers have really restored my faith in humanity. I’ve slept everywhere from hay lofts to four-poster beds, all completely free of charge.”

CULINARY COMPANIONSHIP The Wonder Ways are about far more than just walking. There’s nothing like exercise and fresh air to work up an appetite, which is lucky, because Wonder Ways pilgrims travel through some of Italy’s finest gastronomic regions. Along the Via Francigena, many mouthwatering recipes stem from medieval traditions, such as testaroli from Lunigiana (a special type of maca-

Lying on the southern section of the Via Francigena, the city of Terracina is home to the renowned Moscato di Terracina wines, produced from locally grown white Muscat grapes. And at the Abbey of San Magno, diners regularly sit at tables groaning under the weight of homegrown vegetables, freshly baked bread, finocchiona (a type of salami seasoned with wild fennel), some of Lazio’s creamiest mozzarella, roasted chestnuts, and huge pans of fresh ravioli. Food, friendship, and fantastic scenery aside, perhaps the greatest attraction of the Wonder Ways is the very undiscovered nature of their wondrousness. In 2017 nearly 300,000 people walked the Camino de Santiago, while only a fraction of this number chose to explore its Italian equivalent. children’s books about software and speaks on the subject of technology’s growing role in society.

ne of the most beloved Finnish traditions is what we call “everyman’s right,” or the use of forests as public commons. Everyone has the right to roam, wander, collect berries, and get lost in the wilderness. This, together with our safe cities, has made it possible for Finnish children to be so adventurous and self-sufficient at such an early age. And that freedom isn’t only true of cities and forests. As a kid of the 1990s, I was allowed to surf around the internet freely. The internet of my childhood is gentle and anonymous. It’s the internet of unfinished, homemade websites and the freedom to try on 12 different identities before breakfast. The browser’s home button was always the final leash that would pull me back to safety from my cyber-adventures. The world and the internet have changed since my childhood. Kids today need to learn how to navigate a more commercial internet full of apps, ads, and real threats. Cities, too, in many parts of the world are unsafe, which is restricting children’s right to roam freely. A Natural England report by Dr William Bird famously showed how in four generations the area where a Sheffield child was allowed to walk unaccompanied shrank from almost 10 kilometres to less than 300 metres. Today’s kids have nowhere to go where they aren’t followed, tracked, and logged – and this applies both online and in the urban space.

The current world of technology is a tale of commercialisation and fear. I went surfing one day in an effort to rekindle my childhood excitement of being able to go anywhere and be anyone at the click of a mouse, but all I found were uniform Instagram photos and warnings for parents. Three threats that lurk online. Ten ways to safeguard your child from the Internet. The World Wild Web has turned into a tame playground. Sure, young children should not go online alone. They shouldn’t trust everyone. But when we close down the wilderness, we close down imagination. Luckily inspiration for self-sufficiency can still be found in unlikely places. Hajimete No Otsukai is a beloved Japanese TV series about children as young as two running their first errands in their neighbourhood. The camera crew secretly follows as the tiny humans make choices about crossing the busy streets, picking up flowers and tofu at the grocery store, or bringing a missing hat to a big sister in school. It’s exciting and scary to watch the children overcome obstacles that are both physical and emotional. Through manageable tasks, the children develop self-reliance, and a sense of social trust. I hope Hajimete No Otsukai can be an inspiration for the next generation making their way in the world, whether in a natural, urban, or digital context. After all, it is only through browsing, meandering, wandering, and exploring that we learn to find what we’re looking for. 

Since the 1970s, when David Bowie sang “I am a DJ/I am what I play/I’ve got believers,” this has been a mostly male business, with star DJs commanding huge fees and adulation. Women are taking over the wheels of steel though, telling their own stories and creating their own communities. usy Clapham High Street in London seems a strange place to be part of a farming revolution. However, unbeknownst to most passers-by strange happenings are taking place right under their feet, or at least 33 metres below them. Utilising a former Second World War bomb shelter, Growing Underground grows micro greens and salad leaves such as pea shoots, wasabi mustard, and pink stem radish. Built as part of a network stretching from Belsize Park to Clapham South, the original plan was to link them up after the war to form a highspeed underground line. Like many underground spaces they lay abandoned. Now in some of the world’s major cities a new breed of urban farmers using space age techniques is taking them over. Most of these farms use hydroponics, which grows the plants without soil in mineral rich water. Although not exactly new− the earliest published research dates to 1627− hydroponics received a boost from NASA with its controlled ecological life-support system research into ways of supporting manned interplanetary expeditions. The Growing Underground project plants the seeds on a bed of recycled carpet, which is then irrigated along with the use of LED lights as a sun substitute.

Co-founder Richard Ballard hit upon the idea after moving to London to embark on a film degree. “I was looking for film ideas and was intrigued with what was underground which led me to the tunnels. On top of that I was interested in the future of cities and food in general. Influenced by futurist Jeremy Rifkin, for my final thesis I posed the question of how we were going to feed and power future cities with a growing population.”

GROWING NEED Exotic holidays, immigration, and cookery shows has changed the way many people eat−meaning a demand for year-round access to crops from the four corners of the globe. For Robert Liang, founder of New York’s Farm. One under Manhattan, this was the main inspiration. “I became fascinated by the range of interesting plants you could find in farmers markets around the world−but it’s difficult getting them out of season or in a location like New York. So, I looked for a way to grow year-round,” he explains. Demand for exotic ingredients increases food miles and contributes to pollution and global warming. By growing in a population centre this reduces to near zero. La Caverne, which repurposed a disused underground car park in Paris, uses bicycles for delivery, and New York’s Farm. One uses a similar approach along with the subway. >

NOVEMBER 2018 BLUE WINGS 63

Meanwhile in Stockholm, Plantagon, which in June opened its first underground farm three storeys below the DN-Skrapan building, mainly grows basil, thyme, and coriander. “We will produce 20 tonnes of herbs a year when fully operational. Usually they would be brought in from Spain, Egypt, and Kenya,” says Mia Kleregård, Plantagon’s deputy chief executive officer. An added advantage is that the product is much fresher; often picked on the same day as consumption. “There’s a huge difference between a product shipped from hundreds of miles away, and something picked that morning down the street. We also grow to a very reliable specification, which is hard for outdoor farms to do,” adds Liang of New York’s Farm.One. A controlled underground environment allows replication of optimum growing conditions and makes growth no longer weather dependent. “The plants get the perfect conditions, due to light, nutrition, and water,” says Kleregård. Temperatures underground are far more constant throughout the year with the tunnel in Clapham being around a steady 15 degrees Celsius without heating. Such a controlled environment means there is no need for the use of pesticides. However, due to the lack of soil under EU rules, crops grown by hydroponics cannot be classified as organic.

POWERING GROWTH Without sunlight crops are dependent on LED lights for growth. Waste heat from these can be a problem. The Plantagon system uses this to heat the office building during winter allowing reuse of up to 70 per cent of the energy; Growing Underground uses the heat to bring up the temperature to the optimum 20 to 25 degrees Celsius for the crops. In Paris the problem is not so big. “LED farming represents less than 5 per cent of our activity. Chicory grows in complete darkness and mushrooms require very little lighting” says Théo Champagnat, La Caverne co-founder. Plantagon has plans for ten farms around Stockholm and is in talks for projects around the world. Growing Underground currently use only around 500 square metres of the 3,000 square metres of tunnel available. Similarly, La Caverne will expand from their current 2,000 square metres to occupy the full 3,500 square metres of their car park. Farm. One was built from the start to be replicable. “This is definitely one of the components of the future of farming. It is, though, dependent on cheap and ultimately renewable energy. The LEDs we’re using at the moment are still in their infancy but in the future people are working on light recipes to really get the best out of a certain crop,” says Ballard. 

ndia’s laid-back coastal region of Goa has been a famous beach destination since the hippie heyday of the 1970s. Today Goa continues to attract people seeking spirituality or a new direction in life. Many practice yoga and Ahimsa, the ancient tradition of non-violence. The quest for healing and detoxing also often incorporates a healthy, plant-based diet. “There’s more awareness of the importance of clean food here in Goa compared to what I see in other parts of India,” says Goa native Vijaya Pais. After jetting around the world for years as a flight attendant, she returned home to become a photographer, blogger, and spokesperson for an organic food and healing event called New Earth Gathering in North Goa.

According to Pais, Goa’s culinary scene has seen big changes in the past seven years. “The quality of the food and the restaurants has improved a lot while still meeting the detox needs of the people travelling here. You can find many interesting fusion vegan restaurants that use local, ecologically grown clean ingredients to make healthy dishes inspired by the Indian kitchen,” she says.

EID Techin innovaatiolla pidetään pientuotanto kilpailukykyisenä EID Tech Oy on vuonna 2009 perustettu automaatioratkaisujen kehittäjä ja tuotantoteollisuuden uudistaja, jonka tuore innovaatio on ANT Plant -mikrotehdaskonsepti.

Y

htiön toimipaikka on Kuopiossa.

Vankka kokemus automaatiosta helpotti järjestelmävalintaa EIDTech Oy:n perustajalla Jari Helmisellä on noin 20 vuoden kokemus Beckhoff teknologiasta elektroniikkaalan yrityksen ohjelmistokehityksen vetäjänä. – Erityisesti OPC UA tulee olemaan tulevissa tuotteissa tärkeässä roolissa. PC pohjaisuus on mahdollistanut kolmansien osapuolien ohjelmistojen liittämisen sau mattomaksi osaksi automaatiojärjestelmää, kertoo Helminen. Tarvittavat rajapinnat on ollut helppo toteuttaa TwinCATin moni puolisella standardoidulla ADS (Automa tion Device Specification) rajapinnalla. Lisäksi TwinCAT3:n lisensiointimalli mah dollistaa ohjelmistokehityksen ja ylläpidon ilman aloituskuluja, mikäoli aloittavalle yritykselle myös oleellinen argumentti Beckhoffteknologian puolesta.

Automaation on oltava kompaktia ja modulaarista

Nopeasti pystytettävä ja helposti skaalattava paikallinen tuotanto

Beckhofftuotteista Jari Helminen korostaa erityisesti pienikokoisten servoterminaalien merkitystä kompakteissa modulaarisissa konekonsepteissa, kuten ANT+micro factory konseptissa.

Modulaarisuus tekee tuotannosta myöhemmin helposti laajen nettavan. Konsepti mahdollistaa uusien outcome economy liiketoimintamallien joustavan ja nopean käyttöönoton kypsillä markkinoilla. Tuotanto on tarvittaessa myös helposti uudelleen sijoitettavissa. Kiinnostus konseptia kohtaan on ollut kansainvälisestikin mittava. Konseptin tul lessa laajempaan käyttöön on luonnollista liittää pilvipalvelut osaksi ratkaisua. Näin tuotantomodulien seurannan päivittämi nen ja ennakoivan kunnossapidon tarpeet tulevat helposti huomioiduksi. – Olen pannut merkille Beckhoffin uudet MQTT/AMQPkommunikointikirjas tot varteenotettavina vaihtoehtoina tekno logian kehittämiseksi. Parasta ratkaisussa on täysi ohjelmistopohjaisuus ja sovel tuvuus kaikille jo toimitetuille Beckhoff ohjausjärjestelmille, visioi Helminen tulevaa kehitystä. – Uusi nopea TwinCAT Vision on mie lenkiintoinen vaihtoehto laadunvarmis tuksen toimintoihin, koska se ei PLC:hen integroituna ratkaisuna hidastaisi tuotan toprosessia lainkaan, Helminen jatkaa.

Lisätietoa EID Tech Oy:stä ja ANT+ micro factory -konseptista oheisen QR-koodin kautta.

EID Tech Oy on käyttänyt innovaativisissa tuotantoratkaisuissaan jo pitkään Beckhoffautomaatiojärjestelmiä, kertoo Jari Helminen.

Building the skyline together with the City of Espoo The Keilaniemi business district will be expanded with new office, hotel and residential buildings. Espoo, one of the fastest growing cities in Finland, is marked by a skyline featuring Finland’s highest office building. This 84-metre high tower building with almost iconic landmark status, built in 1976 as the headquarters of the national oil company Neste, is located in the business district of Keilaniemi. An area inside Keilaniemi was acquired by real estate developer Regenero in 2017. Together with the City of Espoo, Regenero shares the same objectives regarding the development of the entire Keilaniemi seaside area. This includes the renovation and refurbishment of the existing premises as well as commercial development that leverages on the overall development of the area. The plan is to create a heart of excellence, a mini metropolis with stylish Nordic living at its core. “Regenero’s aim is to develop high-quality office and residential premises in prime locations with excellent public transportation and car connections. The recent investments in the area’s public transportation, such as the new metro line, the improvements of surrounding ring road and the vicinity of the highway and Aalto University Campus in Otaniemi, make Espoo the most desirable place in the metropolitan area right now”, says Kari Helin, CEO of HGR Property Partners, which owns Regenero together with YIT. According to Regenero, the future emphasis will be on public means of moving around. “Companies are seeking to locate their premises next to functional public transportation,” Helin says. In addition to Keilaniemi, Regenero also has several other ongoing real estate projects in Espoo. The company is very pleased with the collaboration with the City of Espoo. “The city has created a strong growth platform enabling us to carry out projects with high quality, consideration for the community and competitive risks for the investors.” Facts about Regenero • 2016 – joint venture formed by YIT and HGR Property Partners • Major projects – Tietotie 6, Keilaniemenranta, Tapiola (site reservation) • 61,000 sqm – Tietotie 6/26,000 sqm, Keilaniemenranta/35,000 sqm

3X TIPS FOR CABIN COMFORT

STAY HYDRATED It is recommended to drink 1-2 decilitres of water every hour. If possible, minimise the amount of tea, coffee, and alcohol you drink. HEALTHIER AIRCRAFT

The Finnair A350 combines the latest technology with advanced passenger comfort features to help you rediscover the thrill of flying. An advanced HEPA filtering system changes the cabin air every two to three minutes ensuring comfort and health for all passengers. Large windows let natural light flow into the cabin and LED technology emits lighting and colours that are customised to fit the time of day, destination, or season. The noise level is 16 decibels below the standard requirement, so resting and relaxing while onboard is easy.

GET SOME SLEEP The best way to tune out is to wear an eye mask and ear plugs. Keep warm, too – have a jacket or blanket handy in case you need it.

2X COMFORTABLE UPGRADES NORDIC BUSINESS CLASS Finnair’s Business Class seats let you fully recline on your intercontinental flight. The seats transform into a 200 cm (6’6”) horizontal bed, so you can enjoy a good night’s sleep.

88 BLUE WINGS NOVEMBER 2018

ECONOMY COMFORT Finnair’s Economy Comfort seating in the front of the Economy Class cabin makes intercontinental travel even more pleasurable with 8–13 cm (3–5 inches) more legroom.

GENERAL WELLBEING Try to bring something to snack on. Fruit and veggies are always a great healthy option. And remember to wear comfortable clothing.

World of Finnair Sustainability

Flying in formation

GLO B AL AV IATIO N is very much aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined by the United Nations, and Finnair leads the way with its own targets, most notably its emissionsreducing fleet renewal programme. Progressive airlines like Finnair set the pace for sustainable change. As confirmed by the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) in its 2018 report, Aviation: Benefits Beyond Borders, 65.5 million jobs are supported worldwide by aviation, with 3.6 per cent of global GDP generated by the industry. In Finland, 8.3 per cent of GDP is accounted for by tourism, with tourists contributing USD 976.1 to the economy per arrival. So global industry, trade, development, and

communications are interwoven with and inseparable from aviation. As the industry grows, it becomes better placed to reduce its environmental impact. Finnair and other airlines continue to invest in new technology, better operations, and improved infrastructure. For instance, since 1990 more than ten billion tonnes of carbon dioxide has been eliminated from emissions. “Supporting the SDGs should be seen as an imperative by all industries the world over,” says Kati Ihamäki, Finnair’s Director of Sustainability. To download the report, go to: aviationbenefits.org

BETTER PLANET Finnair’s sustainability strategy is built on three principles – cleaner, caring, and collaborative.
