Finding joy secret to happiness? I’ve often been asked that question after the Finns were voted the World’s Happiest People in 2018. My answer is that one of the most important aspects is maintaining a good quality of life, which means taking proper holidays from work and the hustle and bustle of daily life. In Finland, one of the most popular vacation choices is spending a few weeks relaxing at a summer cottage by the lake or sea. Being in or near nature helps me to rest and recharge. The restorative power of simply gazing at the sea on a warm summer day is immeasurable. As the holiday season approaches, it’s a good time to start making plans. Finland is a fabulous summer destination offering a range of healthy activities from sailing in the archipelago to hiking in Lapland or enjoying life in a laidback city such as Helsinki, which is surrounded by the sea. You can find out more at VisitFinland.com. Wishing you many inspiring journeys, Arja Suominen

G-1000® ECO

Durable, adaptable, timeless Fjällräven’s own fabric. Made from organic cotton and recycled polyester with fluorocarbon-free impregnation. Adaptable with Greenland Wax

SOMETIMES, THE INNOVATION LIES IN NOT INNOVATING AT ALL The Fjällräven Greenland Jacket in today's fast-paced society you tend to get used to a certain rate of development and change. Being still for a moment in time feels strangely ineffective and counterproductive. Likewise, here at Fjällräven, we have become used to a certain rate of innovation throughout the years, not that we're trying to actually innovate anything. But our drive to develop the best, most durable and functional clothes and equipment, often involves an innovation or two along the way. Like the Fjällräven Greenland Jacket back in 1968 – innovative in both design and textile material. But since then it has been remarkably resilient to change. Is that by chance? Hardly. 1966 – The adventure begins In 1966 a team of Swedish and Norwegian alpinists and glacier researchers started a challenging expedition to Greenland. Among the explorers was Per-Åke Sjöman, an experienced alpinist who had heard Åke Nordin, founder of Fjällräven Company, talk about raising the standard and function of outdoor equipment and asked for his help. Åke custom-made seven different-sized tents and also supplied the team with backpacks. Coming home after six weeks of extremely rough conditions, Per-Åke submitted a written report testifying that the tents and backpacks had worked “surprisingly well”. The team was, however, disappointed with the clothing that was provided from other suppliers. Per-Åke Sjöman and his mountaineering friend Hans Hellström, discussed the problem with Åke, who immediately

saw the opportunity to solve another outdoor-ware challenge. A unique fabric is born Working with Hellstöm, Åke set out to make a jacket suitable for rock climbing, that was both functional and strong enough for life on vertical rock. On the chest he placed two sturdy pockets, one for folding maps and one for cigarettes. (Smoking had yet to be designated a major health hazard back then). Side pockets were deemed unnecessary and in the way of ropes and harnesses. But what material to use? Åke chose a fabric he'd once considered for tents that had proved too heavy for the purpose - a blend of polyester and cotton that was extremely durable. (Little did he know that he was creating Fjällräven’s now famous outdoor fabric, G-1000, that serves as the base-material in most of our outdoor clothes and equipment). He sewed the jacket according to the pattern he and Hellström had drawn and decided to try the finished product on an expidition. A unique jacket is born After two weeks, Åke was more or less satisfied. Just one thing needed improving: the fabric's water-resistance. He thought back to his ski-jumping days and the trick they'd used as they sat and waited for their turn to jump. They used ski-wax on their trouser seats to repel moisture and keep the chilly winter at bay. Why not try the same idea with the new jacket? Åke experimented with a mixture of beeswax and paraffin. Using the heat from his wife

Elisabeth's hair dryer, he applied a wax blend to the fabric and the result was a water-repellent, yet breathable material with tremendous abrasion resistance. Now the jacket would work perfectly for mountain climbing and outdoor recreation. He named it the Greenland Jacket and it was soon worn not only by sportsmen and alpinists, but a whole generation of outdoor enthusiasts. The 2019 Greenland Jacket During the fifty years that have passed since then, there have been only three changes. One in 1972 when it received side pockets due to popular demand; one in 2006 when it came in a winter version with pile fleece; and one in 2018, when all production of the Greenland collection went from using g-1000 to G-1000 Eco (recycled polyester and organic cotton) and it received new trims and minor modifications to the fit. That's it. Born timeless There is good reason for the Greenland Jacket’s time-resilience. It was developed to solve an actual problem in real life. It made sense to mountaineers and it made sense to outdoor enthusiasts. And when you put your new Greenland Jacket on before you go outdoors, it will most probably make sense to you too. That's because function, comfort and durability don't go out of style. Neither does the compulsion to take deep breaths of fresh air in stunning outdoor surroundings or tread softly on pine-needle-covered forest floors. So off you go. Nature is waiting.

Lyn Harris creates her signature scents in her lab in Marylebone, London.

Scentsational fragrancier that perfume was reserved for the gods, and there is definitely something otherworldly about finding a great fragrance. Britain’s first classically trained nose, Lyn Harris knows the importance of finding the ideal scent. “What I’m creating are beautiful smells that give way to a feeling, an emotion, a picture, a painting, or a name… and the story they portray,” says Harris. Inspired by everything from her childhood trips to Scotland and the “damp, wet, and mossy” landscapes of Yorkshire to the lilacs and pines near her north London home, Harris has created scents for Jane Birkin and Manolo

Offering a seasonal collection of scents and candles, the Marylebone atelier also provides a bespoke fragrance service, whereby Harris will craft your own, one-of-a-kind scent. At a time when consumers are demanding a more personal, unique experience, Perfumer H’s products couldn’t be more fitting. “People want to see the process, rather than getting a faceless product, and a product that doesn’t speak to them,” says Harris. “I think it’s very telling of the era that we’re living in.” 

MOCKTAILS, PLEASE! TH E M IND FUL drinking trend – cutting back on alcohol consumption or totally abstaining as a lifestyle choice – is extending far beyond the dry January tradition held in many parts of the world. According to Real Simple.com, mindful drinking is all about a conscious attitude towards consuming alcohol: “The technique has become popular in the U.K., where a group called Club Soda teaches the approach and hosts mindful-drinking pub crawls. Research shows there has been a rapid decline in drinking among young people across Britain.” To that end, a range of events including an annual Mindful Drinking Festival in London and alcohol-free pub nights are popping up, as well as spreading to other cities around the globe.

t’s early morning in the heart of Bordeaux, and the first rays of sunshine are pushing through the glass ceiling of ECOLOD G E D E S CHAR TR ONSE . We are in the quartier of Chartrons, a once-forgotten neighbourhood of blackened sandstone façades and empty narrow streets. Recently, however, it has been transformed into a true bobo district, with an ambitiously run bistro, coffee shop, cocktail bar, or queue-worthy bakery on every street corner. This transformation has helped Bordeaux shake off its old nickname “Sleeping Beauty” and adopt a new one: “Portland of Garonne.” “We moved from Paris to Bordeaux three years ago. It’s a magical combination of metropolitan vibe and rural life. You are in the heart of a city, but the sea, countryside, and mountains are just a stone’s throw away,” says Muriel Roudsovsky, artistic director and owner of Ecolodge des Chartrons, a bed and breakfast that has earned its “eco” prefix by choosing solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and hemp insulation – and by serving a delicious breakfast of vegan croissants and organic fresh fruit. Roudsovsky runs the bed and breakfast with her husband, IT entrepreneur and former F-Secure collaborator Arnaud Roudsovsky. The forty-something couple is what the new Bordeaux is all about: inspired small-scale businesses that create urban culture through ecological and artisanal thinking. This is the Bordeaux spirit that is pulling in Parisians, start-up entrepreneurs, and some of the best talent in French cuisine.

GREEN SQUAT TOWN Bordeaux is an old port city split in two by the caramel-coloured River Garonne that once provided a route to the Atlantic and beyond. Most of Bordeaux is built on the left bank, including the newly booming bobo quarters and the UNESCO-listed city centre. But on the right bank, there is something totally fresh: the Darwin ecosystem, the most innovative and bizarre neighbourhood in all of France. “Urgence climatic!” – visitors are welcomed to the Darwin ecosystem in knee-high block letters calling for climate action. A decade ago this was an abandoned military base, but now the remaining brick and corrugated iron barracks host the biggest organic restaurant in France, an indoor skate park, a gallery, the headquarters of eco-oriented start-ups, a bike co-operative, a bee garden, and a school. At lunch time, M AG AS I N G ÉN ÉRA L is packed regardless of its ample space. Long tables are crowded with Darwinians digging into their savoury kale crepes. “You can also bring your own picnic here. You don’t need to buy anything,” says Darwin founder Philippe Barre, who, as the story has it, invested his advertising fortune into these old barracks to show that you can run a business without roasting the planet. Barre is wearing a Saint James fisherman knit, dark glasses, and a year-round tan you only get from decades of surfing. Five per cent of the cost of the café allongé he is sipping goes to non-profit organisations operating in Bordeaux. It is estimated that businesses in Darwin produce five times less carbon emissions than

average, which surpasses the COP21 (Paris Agreement) goal. This is achieved mainly through energy conservation, recycling, and lowcarbon transportation. “Our main goal is to show that you can do more with less, and that frugality feeds creativity,” Barre says.

MICHELIN-QUALITY TONIC In France, cocktails are seldom ordered before six in the evening, but when Estelle Sauvage is behind the bar, exceptions can be made. She mixes ice cubes, juniper berries, a rosemary sprig, and a splash of tonic water in a high glass and slides the drink over. It tastes like the freshest gin and tonic – except without the gin. Sauvage is the creator of A R C H I B A L D , a distillery-made premium tonic water headquartered in Darwin.

Arts, culture, pleasure, and good atmosphere make people want to be involved in change. 38 BLUE WINGS APRIL 2019

“Originally, we created the tonic to accompany our liqueurs, but it’s so good that it stands very well on its own. The bitterness is very smooth, the bubbles small and elegant, and there’s only a hint of sugar,” Sauvage explains. She and her business partner Olivier Fichot chose to replace the traditional tonic ingredient, imported quinine, with French-grown gentian root, which has a more sophisticated taste. The plant-based ingredients are distilled to bring out all the aromas. “Even Alain Ducasse and Anne-Sophie Pic are using it,” Sauvage muses. Ducasse is one of the most celebrated chefs of all time, with 21 Michelin stars under his belt, and Pic is the fourth female chef to gain three Michelin stars. Archibald is not strictly an eco-brand, but it’s making many smart moves. Apart from using only organic French ingredients, Sauvage and Fichot manufacture their labels from sugar cane residue. They also convert cardboard waste into coasters and make their deliveries with hybrid cars. It is precisely this kind of gentle, pleasant change that Darwin is pushing forward. “Issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and populism can paralyse us with fear. Arts, culture, pleasure, and good atmosphere are an antidote to that. That’s how you make people want to be involved in change,” says Philippe Barre.

THE SWEET SPOT In front of Darwin, visitors can borrow a city bike and pedal back into the city centre across pedestrian-only Pont de Pierre bridge. Bordeaux

ranks sixth in the Copenhagenize Index of bicyclefriendly cities. This ranking is source of pride for Michel Duchène, city planning advisor for the legendary mayor Alain Juppé. Duchène is seated in one of the finest new pastry shops in Bordeaux, PÂT I SS ER I E S , with a matcha choux pastry and his recently published book La grande metamorphose de Bordeaux in front of him. His cycling helmet sits neatly on a nearby chair – in Bordeaux, even a high-ranking city official in flawless suit-and-tie rides a bike. During the 25-year reign of Mayor Alain Juppé and his team, the city has undergone a massive transformation that has turned riverfronts into beautiful walkways, pushed cars out of the city centre to make way for trams, and transformed old port hangars into hubs of urban culture. These communal areas have become a popular venue for carnivals, outdoor flea markets, and neighbourhood picnics. “We wanted to recreate a city that makes its citizens happy. We stole good ideas from cities around the world and put them into action – all of them simultaneously. Had we gone step-by-step, it would have taken 30 years,” Duchène explains. The transition was not an easy one, but it’s bearing fruit. In recent years, Bordeaux has been voted as France’s favourite city. For all newcomers, there is a special ceremony. “Anyone who dips their feet in the central pool, the Miroir d’eau, becomes an honorary Bordelaise – no matter who they are or where they come from. It’s a place of social heritage, not only cultural heritage.”

Olivier Fichot and Estelle Sauvage are distilling the go-to tonic of Michelin chefs (no gin required).

Chef Félix Clerc turns locally-sourced fish and self-grown vegetables into savoury yet fresh dishes in neo-bistro Symbiose.

A BORDEAUX LOVE STORY Simon Chollet, Félix Clerc, Lucas Maraton, and Thomas Nero dipped their feet in the Miroir d’eau in 2015. These 28-year-old friends, who met whilst working in a high-class cocktail bar in Paris, run possibly the most ambitious neobistro of the Chartrons district, SYMB I OSE . The chef, Félix Clerc, creates the daily lunch and dinner menus exclusively from ingredients produced within a 50-kilometre radius of Bordeaux – which means fresh fish, meat, vegetables, and herbs, some of which are grown in their own little garden near the city. At dinner time, the small stone-walled bistro is full: booking a few days in advance is highly recommended. “We wanted to challenge Félix a bit, so we came up with this concept,” Maraton says, with his signature grin. Maraton and Chollet are in charge of the cocktail bar of Symbiose, a speakeasy style bar hidden behind the grandfather clock at the back of the bistro. Here you can sample mouth-watering cocktails mixed from kitchen leftovers – which means glasses filled with vegetable infusions and fermented fruit. This spring, the band of friends is opening a second restaurant, Résine, serving gastro cuisine. “Everyone said that working with friends is a bad idea but for us it’s working really well. We bring out the best in each other and learn from each other. When you do something unexpected instead of something classic, you inspire people,” Chollet says. This kind of inspiring unexpectedness is what Bordeaux is doing exceedingly well right now. 

lady enters a doctor’s office and takes a seat in the waiting room. Suddenly, a bell chimes, and all the other patients in the waiting room stand up. And sit back down. Then the bell chimes again, and the same procedure follows. At some point, the patient joins in, convinced that since others are doing it, this is the correct way to behave. Of course, the whole thing is a gag, and the “patients” are in on it. Besides being an amusing waste of time, this viral internet video is a case in point of the power of example. Watching others and interacting with others is how we humans learn about how to behave, what is appropriate, accepted, and valued in different contexts. In short, culture and learning about all it entails, takes place in interaction with others. Corporate culture has a gigantic impact on individuals’ performance and wellbeing. In terms of success, it can truly make or break a company. Culture can either support or hinder individuals in learning, development, and collaboration. The same also seems to apply in animal culture. In a recent article published in Science, researchers describe how many animals including primates, birds, whales, and elephants pass knowledge down through generations. The successful functioning of this culture is vital for the species’ survival, and the effects of a single animal on culture can be huge. Could the same apply in business? And if so, how can we identify whether

culture is helping to ensure the health and longevity of a business? Very often culture is expressed outwards as a lofty set of values and principles on the company’s webpage or in interim reports. Sometimes these statements truthfully reflect the culture, but at times they seem to reflect the opposite. As such, the best way to understand culture is to look at the actions and the quality of interactions between individuals in the company. What if you find a discrepancy between desired culture, and the actions that people take in reality? How can that change a culture? Recently, many companies have created very specific guidelines for what is appropriate interaction between individuals. For instance, a while ago Netflix allegedly instructed their employees that looking at a co-worker for more than five seconds could be considered sexual harassment. It is important to clearly state key principles and write down the values that the company believes as a powerful practice for goal setting. However, as a method for changing human behaviour, guidelines are probably powerless. A better way would be to influence the interaction that takes place. And how does one go about this? By taking part. By infecting others with behaviours you wish to see. By making the good values and cultural aspects contagious. Think about interaction. How are you treated and how do you treat others? Who are the newcomers and what do they perceive−before they adapt? 

Corporate culture has a gigantic impact on individuals’ wellbeing.

Ginolis uudistaa terveysteknologiaa automaation keinoin Pikadiagnostiikka on yksi terveysteknologian ripeimmin kasvavia alueita. Automaatioon perustuvilla terveysteknologian pientuotteilla on maailmalla kova kysyntä. Vuonna 2010 perustetun Ginoliksen suurin markkinaalue on Yhdysvalloissa, jossa merkittävimpiä asiakkaita ovat muun muassa Tandem Diabetes Care ja Sekisui Diagnostics. EU-alueella tuotteita viedään eniten Ranskaan, Espanjaan, Sveitsiin ja Iso-Britanniaan. Asiakkaiksi on tullut myös suomalaisia yrityksiä, esimerkiksi Mobidiag. Diabeteksen hoidossa käytettävät insuliinipumput ovat tyypillisiä laitteita, joiden valmistuksessa Ginoliksen automaatioratkaisut pääsevät oikeuksiinsa. Automaatiota hyödynnetään myös malaria- ja hiv-testien valmistuksessa. Teijo Fabritius katsoo, että pikadiagnostiikka tulee enenevässä määrin jokaisen kuluttajan saataville raskaustestien tapaan.

Ginolis Oy Samalla kotiseuranta vapauttaa terveydenhuollon resursseja ja tuo yhteiskunnalle kustannussäästöjä.

Automaatio on ratkaiseva tekijä korkean laadun takaamisessa, linjaa Ginolis Oy:n toimitusjohtaja Teijo Fabritius.

– Automaatio on ratkaiseva tekijä korkean laadun takaamisessa. Automaation ansiosta tuotteista saadaan tasalaatuisia ja luotettavia, Fabritius toteaa. Hän mainitsee esimerkkinä tilanteen, jossa joudutaan määrittämään sydänlihasvaurion merkkiaine verinäytteestä. Tällaisessa tilanteessa on helppo ymmärtää, miksi tuloksen oikeellisuus on tärkeää.

– Beckhoff on tunnettu yritys, josta meillä on hyviä kokemuksia jo aiemmista yhteyksistä, Fabritius toteaa.

Tuotantolinja rakentuu moduuleista Ginolis hyödyntää terveysteknologiassa modulaarista ajattelumallia.

Tulevaisuus tuo kasvua

Pitkäjänteinen yhteistyö on välttämätöntä terveysteknologiassa, jossa kaikille tuotteille joudutaan hankkimaan viranomaishyväksyntä. Kun validointi on saatu, muutoksia on hankala tehdä myöhemmin. Siksi automaatiojärjestelmien komponenttien tulee olla pitkään saatavilla.

Kilpailukykyetua automaation keinoin Ginolis käyttää Beckhoff Automationin TwinCAT-automaatiojärjestelmää varsin laajasti. PC-ohjaus mahdollistaa useiden

Terveysteknologian kasvuvauhti näkyy Ginoliksen tilauskannassa: tämän vuoden tuotanto on jo myyty, ja yhtiö kasvaa myös hyödyntämällä yhteistyöverkostoa. Fabritius katsoo valoisin mielin tulevaisuuteen.

rt is something we can’t express with words,” says Takashi Kudo. But then the words start pouring forth, and for most of the next hour, he talks quickly, excitedly, passionately about teamLab, the Tokyo-based art collective of which he’s one of the key members. “One of the key members” is an incredibly vague description−the kind of thing that a writer usually writes only when they forgot to ask a question that they should have been asking. But for teamLab it seems appropriate. “If you really need a title for me, you can use ‘Communications Director,’” he says, “but titles are almost meaningless at teamLab because there’s no hierarchy. What matters is your skill set, not your title. Contributions can come from anybody, anywhere, at any time.” And it seems as though everybody, everywhere, all the time is talking about teamLab, at least in Tokyo. Their two installations, teamLab Borderless and teamLab Planets, opened in the middle of last year near central Tokyo and have been a massive success. Borderless alone drew more than one million visitors over the course of just its first five months, and even now the lines snake out of the building, down the block, and around the corner by lunch time on most days.

scope to have been realised by just five people− or even 50. The number of teamLab members is somewhere in the neighborhood of 650, including computer graphics animators, hardware engineers, software engineers, architects, sound engineers, mathematicians, coders, and even machine learning experts. Kudo refers to all of these people simply as “ultratechnologists.” Surprisingly, though, he’s not really one of them. At university he studied philosophy and literature, not physics or robotics. After graduating and toiling in corporate Japan for a year, he fled, spending the next six years travelling the world. He eventually settled in Stockholm, where for more than four years he worked as a magazine editor. Now in his early forties, he has been in teamLab for almost a decade, helping to articulate the collective’s message. “Are Borderless and Planets really art? That’s not for us to decide. We just want people to come and experience them.” What both installations share is the immersive aspect; you’re not just looking at two-dimensional artworks on the wall in front of you, but rather you’re surrounded in what seems like four dimensions. Visitors can interact with the art, changing the colours in a room full of hanging LED strips, for example, by sending commands from your smartphone. Try doing that with the Mona Lisa. The bottom line is that teamLab’s installations are some of the trippiest experiences you can have in Tokyo these days, and it’s fun to think about what other envelopes the group will be able to push in the years ahead. But don’t ask Takashi Kudo where teamLab will be in ten years. “Nobody knows,” he laughs. 

At teamLab’s offices in Tokyo, the meeting room is as colourful as some of their installations.

The happiness quest How to find ikigai, the Japanese secret to a long and healthy life. TEXT PETER WELD ILLUSTRATION LEENA KISONEN

W

hat do the world’s oldest competitive speed skater, the oldest active commercial pilot, and the oldest professional club DJ have in common? They’re all well into their eighties and nineties, and they’re all Japanese. World Health Organisation statistics for 2016, the most recent year for which the data are available, show Japan at the top of the life expectancy charts, a position it has held for quite a number of years. What could the secret be? Is it the Japanese diet? Getting plenty of exercise? Drinking green tea every day? Héctor García and Francesc Miralles think they know the answer. They’re the authors of the bestselling book Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Healthy Life, which has become something of a worldwide phenomenon: since its original 2016 publication in Spanish, it has been printed in 43 languages and has sold over one million copies. Roughly translated into English, the word “ikigai” means “a reason for living.” While not downplaying the role of a healthy diet and an active lifestyle in helping people live longer, García and

Miralles argue that the Japanese are particularly adept at finding purpose in their lives, and that sense of purpose keeps them going long after people in many other countries would have retired to armchairs in front of their TVs. Over lunch at a restaurant in Tokyo, his home for more than a decade, García expands on his and Miralles’ findings. Not content just to study the long lives enjoyed by the Japanese population as a whole, they travelled to Ogimi, a village on the southern island of Okinawa that has earned the nickname “Village of Longevity.” They found a community in which even the elderly exercise every day, not jogging on treadmills or lifting weights but raising vegetables in their gardens and walking to friends’ homes. They found a community in which people “eat the rainbow,” consuming a wide variety of foods, including lots of fruits and vegetables, but everything in small portions. They found a community in which virtually everybody has known everybody else since birth and where helping friends and neighbours is as important as taking care of oneself. And as García and Miralles interviewed Ogimi elders, they discovered another common denominator: everybody had an ikigai, a reason to

>

hop out of bed each morning and look forward to the day ahead. These ikigai varied from person to person: for one interviewee, it was weaving things out of wicker, while for another it was growing her own vegetables and cooking them herself, and yet another mentioned getting together with her friends to belt out tunes with a karaoke machine.

LESSONS FROM THE PROS

García’s ikigai; though his daytime job is in IT, before going to work every morning, he tries to fit in two hours of writing. “If I don’t write, I get grumpy,” he laughs. “Keep trying new things,” he adds, “and decide after doing them whether they make you feel better or worse. And remember that everybody is different: you might find an activity you enjoy so much that when you do it, the hours feel like minutes, but when your friend tries it, he keeps looking at his watch to see whether it’s time to stop yet.” Sometimes the search for your own ikigai can be a short one: by carefully examining the life that you’re living today, you might find that you already have one. A diagram in García and Miralles’ book shows ikigai occupying the intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can get paid for doing—or to put it a bit differently, ikigai is where your passion, your mission, your profession, and your vocation come together.

Ikigai is where your passion, your mission, your profession, and your vocation come together.

The idea that having a purpose in life can extend your time on this planet isn’t hard to believe, but how exactly do you go about finding that purpose? That’s a tricky question—so tricky, in fact, that García and Miralles wrote a follow-up book which focused solely on practical techniques for finding your ikigai. “For example, at the end of each day,” García suggests, “spend five minutes writing down the three best and the three worst things that happened to you that day.” Writing is clearly

”a Pacific Northwest Love Story”

But don’t just take Héctor Garcia’s and Francesc Miralles’ word for it; listen to the pros. For example, Mayako Muroi’s passion, mission, profession, and vocation all refer to the same thing: the piano. She started playing it at the age of six, going on to graduate with highest honours from Tokyo Music School, and playing with the Japan Symphony Orchestra. Then came further piano studies in Germany, the beginning of several decades in Europe before she returned to Japan in her sixties. Today she’s the nation’s oldest performing pianist, less than three years shy of her hundredth birthday. In the meantime, Zenjiro Nakashio has been winning track and field events and setting all-Japan records for nearly 30 years now, but in stark contrast to Mayako Muroi, he was a retiree, not a child, when he found his passion in life. Now, at 95, he still trains four times a week with the javelin, the shot, the discus, and the hammer. It doesn’t seem likely that he’ll bring

home any medals next year, when the Olympics return to Tokyo, but at the national and local levels he continues to dream of glory just like athletes a fraction of his age. And speaking of people who got a late start, Sumiko Iwamura was seventy-seven years young when she signed up for a class at a school for DJs. She quickly realised that she had a knack for DJing and started to mix the music at local social events. One thing led to another, and now, at 84, she regularly performs into the wee hours at Tokyo nightclubs as DJ Sumirock, combining the techno beats that you’d expect of a DJ with classical music and other genres that you’d never dream of hearing in a club. Amazingly, she still works in her family’s Chinese restaurant during the day, making hundreds of gyoza, or fried dumplings. Dumplings by day and techno by night: with not one but two ikigai, DJ Sumirock might have several more decades of life to look forward to. 

Push for Change in the air and on the ground

BETTER PLANET Finnair’s sustainability strategy is built on three principles – cleaner, caring, and collaborative.

DO GOOD

The latest initiative that helps customers choose Finnair is the Push for Change service launched in January by means of which customers can offset and reduce the emissions of their flights. “We introduced this service based on research results,” says Ihamäki. “Push for Change offers customers the opportunity to purchase biofuel to be used in our flight operations or support the use of low emission cooking stoves in Mozambique.” The report also describes every aspect of Finnair’s sustainability activity, ranging from modern fleet investments to occupational health and wellbeing at work, human rights, and waste management.

WH E N IT CO M E S TO sustainability in air travel, customers these days have a choice. Finnair recently published its Sustainability Report 2018 which is filled with detailed information about the company’s longstanding commitment to environmental and corporate responsibility. Looking back over ten years of reporting, Kati Ihamäki, Finnair’s Director, Corporate Sustainability, recalls that the discussion about climate change and efforts to minimise it has been ongoing. “Airlines decide whether to invest in modern technology, recycle waste, reduce energy consumption, and care for employee wellbeing,” she says. “As the customer, you decide on the kind of airline you support.”
