Our secret to joy was recently named the world’s happiest country, according to the 2018 World Happiness Report, which ranked six variables: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, freedom from corruption, and generosity. That top position follows on the heels of a series of meaningful accolades in recent years. Here are just a few: Finland was voted the world’s safest country in the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017; it’s the most stable country in the world, according to The Fund for Peace, Fragile States Index 2017; and the freest country in the world together with Sweden and Norway by Freedom House, Freedom in the World 2018. These rankings remind me of how well we have it in the Nordic countries and how privileged we are when it comes to overall wellbeing and quality of life, which are inextricably linked to joy. As Finnish philosopher Frank Martela says in an interview in this issue: “I like to say that happiness is what happens when you’re busy doing meaningful things.”

Trending treats

SAVOURY TO SWEET celebrates International Hummus Day, 24 hours of eating hummus for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert! Although mainly known as a savoury dip, the spread traditionally made from cooked mashed chickpeas, garlic, tahini, and olive oil is trending as the new sweet treat. Leading the way, Delighted by Hummus has created a series of sweet spreads made from chickpeas by swapping in ingredients such as cinnamon and whole vanilla beans for garlic and lemon. Now how about some vanilla bean, snickerdoodle, or brownie batter hummus?

BRIGHT IDEAS

GET YOUR COFFEE FIX T H E WO R L D is awash with stuff that’s broken but doesn’t need to be thrown out – it just requires a pair of handy hands to fix it so that it’ll be good and functional as new. Enter the global network of Repair Cafés, free meeting places for repairing things together. In each official Repair Café, there’s a range of tools and materials available to help fix items from clothes and furniture to bicycles, toys, and electrical appliances that would otherwise be headed for the garbage dump. Many of the cafés also have expert volunteers on hand, with specific repair skills in a variety of fields. The Repair Café network just marked a major milestone with its 1,500th café opening in Guérande, France. Martine Postma, who organised the first Repair Café in Amsterdam in 2009, thought up the original idea.

The Nix by Nathan Hill is a funny and moving debut novel about a son who sets out to find the mother who left him as a child. The book eloquently captures Chicago at historical turning points.

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón is a captivating masterpiece set in a magically fascinating historical Barcelona that follows a boy’s quest to uncover the city’s postwar secrets.

The Cormoran Strike series by David Galbraith (actually JK Rowling) follow a private eye called Cormoran Strike in crime novels set in the intriguing world of contemporary London.

FUTURE FOOD

HYPER LOCAL

Health tech

Helsinki’s newest restaurants, Ultima, founded by two of Finland’s top chefs, Henri Alén and Tommi Tuominen, promises to be a global pioneer in high-tech, hyper-local food production when it opens its doors on May 15. Ultima is ahead of the curve, as diners can – quite literally – see their meal growing around them. The restaurant, located in the centre of Helsinki, houses a hydroponic growing system, aeroponic potato tubes, and a mushroom-growing statue that doubles as a work of design. “Finns are very willing to experiment with food. They are radical, even,” says Alén. One of the main ideas behind Ultima, in cooperation with Sitra, the Finnish innovation fund, is to test how effectively the circular economy can work in a restaurant in an Arctic country.

Finnish health tech company Oura Health has just won the prestigious Red Dot Award for Product Design for its new range of Oura rings. The company, based in Oulu, Helsinki, and San Francisco, produces one of the world’s first wellness ring and app that analyses sleep, activity levels, daily rhythms, and the physiological responses in the body.

hile modern Nordic cottages are regular favourites on the pages of design magazines, it’s still a rarity to see one of these minimalist wonders in real life. And, as many holiday homes in Finland rely on the safe charm of log cabins and farmhouse aesthetics, it is even rarer to find one that serves as a hotel. “Traditional” was also the first option when the Anttolanhovi wellness village decided to expand its lodgings on Lake Saimaa. In the end – luckily – they decided to take things in an edgier direction. The fresh design of the wooden lakeside villas is based on two winning entries by young architects in an architectural competition.

16 BLUE WINGS MAY–JUNE 2018

While both concepts embrace their environment and boast strikingly modern design, the outcomes are quite unique. The villas by Emma Johansson hug the surrounding nature and are nearly invisible when approached by road, while the airy, sunny interiors open directly onto the lake. Rather than blending in, the six semi-detached hillside villas by Timo Leiviskä stand out proudly against the backdrop of the forest, shining like bright beacons in the night. Finnish design and art is prominent in the décor of the villas, in details from Iittala cups to Ilmari Tapiovaara chairs. “We wanted simple luxury that connects functionality and comfort with the surrounding nature,” says Ella Savolainen of Anttolanhovi. The evergreen pine forest is also the reason why the location attracted visitors in the first place. The main house was built in the late ’70s as a facility for patients suffering from respiratory illnesses, as pine cleans the air and is easy on the lungs. Today, the soothing effects of the forest are still the biggest draw of Anttolanhovi and its villas, which are popular especially among visitors from the busy cities of Japan, China, and Spain. 

Île Saint-Louis, Paris France IT WAS A lazy end of July day in the historic 4th arrondissement of Paris where so many stories and memories are made. A 24-hour layover was more than ample time to experience the true essence of Paris – to enjoy a walk along the banks of the Seine River, bordered by Belle Époque buildings, and admire the weathered hues of their intricate façades. What a delightful surprise to find such serenity in this bustling city. There are oases of calm everywhere, if you just look.

As founder of Juni, a PR agency specialising in design, Louekari is on a mission to put Helsinki on the map as an alternative fashion capital. “The level of creativity in Finnish fashion is amazing, but you have to be loud to get noticed. I help to build networks and win Finnish brands the visibility and respect they deserve internationally,” says Louekari. Raised by architects in an “Aalto-saturated” home, Louekari studied fine art photography in Glasgow, but soon discovered that her real talent

lies elsewhere. “I’m better at selling other people than myself,” she says, with a modest smile. When not chasing her two-year-old son Pepe, her waking hours are devoted to organising Fashion in Helsinki, a comprehensive annual showcase of Finnish fashion taking place May 23 to 25. “We have a great line-up of international speakers appearing at this year’s fashion seminar,” she notes. Christmas 2018 will see the unveiling of Louekari’s “dream project,” the opening of a onestop Finnish fashion hub at Galleria Esplanad. “I’m very excited. Great things are happening for our brands right now,” she enthuses. 

Authentic eats of Amsterdam The most real-deal eats and drinks in the Dutch capital come with a side dish of fascinating backstory. TEXT ANDREW MARSHALL

Market fare An unmissable foodie stop in the trendy De Pijp neighbourhood is the Albert Cuyp Markt – the biggest and most popular outdoor market in the Netherlands, operating since 1905. Over 250 stalls sell everything from fresh vegetables and flowers to a smorgasbord of Dutch specialties. Cheese stalls bulge with Gouda, Edam, and Friese nagelkaas, a clove cheese that became popular when spices were first imported in the 17th century.

The greenhouse effect The stunning glass building that houses the restaurant De Kas was built in the 1920s when it was used as the city’s municipal greenhouse. Today it retains an old-fashioned charm despite its conversion into a super-stylish eatery. Locally sourced meat and line-caught fish complement the organic vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers grown onsite. The lunch and dinner menu consist of small dishes served as individual courses, which change with the seasons depending on what’s been picked from the garden each day. >

TASTY TRIO

Apple of my eye Situated canal-side in the Jordaan district, Café Papeneiland is a great example of a traditional bruin café (brown café), dating back to 1642. This is one of the best places in Amsterdam to sample appelgebak, or apple pie, lovingly made from a closelyguarded recipe handed down through generations. The Dutch have been making apple pie since the 1500s – it’s the extra-thick crust and filling of cinnamon, brown sugar, and raisins that makes it so different.

FISHY BUSINESS Customers of all ages return again and again to the fish shop Urker Viswinkel, in the Jordaan district, which is one of the best places in town for kibbeling (deep fried cod). All fish is sourced from small Dutch boats ensuring the best quality in terms of freshness and sustainability.

ALL SORTS OF LICORICE Jacob Hooy & Co began life as a pharmacy in 1743 and although it specialises in supplements, homeopathic remedies, and herbs, the best reason to visit is the excellent selection of Dutch liquorice in a variety of shapes.

SWEET TREAT Who doesn’t like pancakes? A must-eat culinary highlight of Amsterdam are poffertjes, which are sugary mini pancakes. They are best eaten with butter and powdered sugar.

Located down a narrow alleyway just off Dam Square is the amusingly named Wynand Fockink, Amsterdam’s best proeflokaal (tasting house). Specialising in the country’s trademark spirit, jenever – a fiery, juniper-flavoured drink similar to gin, the tasting house barely looks a day older than its 1679 origins, where antique bottles perch on crooked shelves and old wooden barrels line the walls. Jenever is traditionally served neat in a tulip-shaped shot glass filled to the brim. 

Wheels of fortune A shared love of fast bikes made three friends start the coolest bike shop in western Finland. TEXT ELENA SULIN PHOTOS HANNES REPO

Passion project

S

einäjoki in western Finland is best known for its summer festivals, which attract over half a million visitors annually. The city is also a hotspot for entrepreneurs, but one among the 600 local businesses proudly stands out: a brightly coloured hipster bike store called Cycli. A shared love of speed and fast bikes brought together the three owners, Heikki Kulmala, Tuukka Kuosmanen, and Tapio Roiha, who got the venture going after the local sports goods store closed down. With room on the market for new players, the boys jumped at the chance of making their dream come true and running their own store. With three years’ experience now under their belt, the trio recently upgraded to a 550 square metre space with a café and repair shop. “Our store has a fresh look, but our core business is still mountain bikes (MTBs). Hipster wheels like Pelagos account for only ten per cent of sales, while the rest is pure MTB,” says Roiha.

Cycli also hosts a café and repair shop.

5 X B I KI NG T HE WILD WEST

“RIDE, WORK, LOVE” Cycli caters to the growing number of bike enthusiasts in the area. According to Roiha, the triathlon boom has done wonders for the business, but the real “market disruptor” has been the growing wellness trend. “People are starting to take better care of themselves, and nothing is better for you than biking,” he explains. “Our clientele includes plenty of former runners and cross-country skiers who prefer biking because it places less wear and tear on the joints.” >

Roiha knows from personal experience. “I was in a motorcycle accident and had to give up skateboarding and snowboarding. I took up biking instead and steadily my muscles grew stronger and my legs healed. Biking basically saved me.” Roiha regards biking as a meditative practice in his daily life: Ride, work, love, as the store’s slogan goes. The store’s team of local bikers are easy to recognise by their brightly-coloured lycra outfits with huge pineapples printed on the front of the jacket. The store organises weekly bike rides and welcomes out-oftown visitors to join in. Bikes, helmets, and lycras can either be rented or purchased in the store. 

Tapio Roiha thinks of biking as a meditative practice and hardly ever misses a ride.

Fifth-generation ceramic artist Kozan Ichikawa, whose studio is in Okawachiyama, is a master indeed: He’s the only person in Japan to have received all three of the pottery certifications conferred by Japan’s Traditional Arts Association.

Porcelain production in Japan began about 400 years ago, when the essential ingredient, kaolin, was discovered in the hills of Saga. Except for an electric wheel, Ichikawa uses the same materials and techniques as his ancestors did.

Late at night, by the light of a bare bulb, Kozan Ichikawa paints a delicate design on a pitcher. After firing, the greenish paint transforms into the vivid blue generally associated with east Asian porcelain.

Kazuhiko Uchikoshi worked at another kiln for more than 20 years before opening his own studio, Hinatagama, in a centuries-old barn near the coastal town of Yobuko. Here he decorates a cup with a grape motif before firing it.

At the age of 82, Katsumi Eguchi shows no signs of slowing down. At his studio, Oyamajigama, near the town of Takeo Onsen, he uses washi (Japanese paper) to paint onto his pottery.

The earthy, chunky pottery known as Karatsuyaki has always been used to produce everyday items for common folk (while porcelain was produced for the nobility). Everywhere you eat, your food is likely to be served on Karatsuyaki.

children’s books about software and speaks on the subject of technology’s growing role in society.

n a recent Cambridge study, a group of British children were shown picture cards, each depicting a common species of plant or wildlife. The researchers also showed the kids a second set of cards, each featuring a species of Pokémon character. Overwhelmingly, the children aged eight and over were better at identifying Pokémon species like Beedrill, Weedle, or Bulbasaur than natural organisms such as oak trees, weasels, or badgers. In his essay Badger or Bulbasaur – have children lost touch with nature? British writer Robert Mcfarlane expresses concern over what is happening to British children’s knowledge of nature. Their accuracy score for Pokémon was around 80 per cent, yet less than 50 per cent for real species. Mcfarlane is right in being anxious about a world where we lose our ability to express what is happening around us. We need language and vocabulary to understand who we are. But I think the problem goes beyond Weedles and weasels. The same lack of understanding and ownership is also pervasive in the realm of technology. Nature and technology are not the opposites here. It’s our own curiosity and wonder that is at stake.

Contemporary life is filled with technology. We turn on our phones hundreds of times a day, and technology is sneaking into every split-second of our lives. But how many of us can actually describe what happens in a DDOS attack, what a bubble-sort algorithm does, or how the blockchain works? The vocabulary of technology is full of “suitcase words” – they hold a lot inside but let very little out. They are easy to pass around, but rarely opened. Computers are chameleons: They can be passive and foreign or alternatively allow for endless building and creativity. Our society’s competitive advantage depends not on how well our children consume technology, but how fearless, creative, and imaginative they learn to be in creating with it. All of this requires curiosity, vocabulary, and understanding. “I believe that names matter, and that the ways we address the natural world can actively form our imaginative and ethical relations with it,” says Mcfarlane. I believe the same is true for technology. It’s the difference between understanding a hashtag and understanding hardware. So the next time you hear someone in a meeting using technology jargon, raise your hand and bravely ask: could you please explain? 

Nature and technology are not the opposites here.

The tranquility of dawn is punctuated by the sound of bamboo cutters on the slopes below and the occasional rooster crow. It’s hard to believe this bucolic vantage point is only a two-hour drive from the urban sprawl of Shanghai, China’s most populous city. A temperate oasis, Moganshan National Park (of which Ta Shan is the highest point) is a favourite antidote to southern China’s sultry weather. Easily accessible from Shanghai and Hangzhou, it is an increasingly popular high-end hangout for the region’s burgeoning bourgeoisie, as well as a new hotspot for international visitors and young Chinese. We want to make it possible to live fossil free within one generation Climate change is for real. We all know this, which is why today, it’s more about how we can make a real difference in the way we counter climate change. We at Vattenfall have decided to make it possible to live fossil free within one generation. To succeed, and as one of Europe’s largest energy companies, we must be completely fossil free ourselves. But that is not enough. We also need to actively contribute in every way possible towards helping other areas of society to be fossil free. One project that we are working on together with our partners SSAB and LKAB, involves developing a new method for producing steel where emissions is water instead of carbon dioxide. We are also

building a comprehensive network of charging stations covering Northern Europe to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. And yet another project is the development of decentralized energy solutions for homes and buildings. Making it possible to produce and optimise their own renewable energy, to be less reliant on the regular energy supply. Making it possible to live fossil free within one generation demands a broader perspective on the challenges. It also needs to be on a larger scale, which is so much more than simply producing electricity in a sustainable manner. Come join us on the way to fossil free living.

modest city, with mosquito-infested waterways and a dire need for air conditioning. Soon Shanghaibased foreign missionaries and their families were building summer villas across the area as they looked to take advantage of its agreeable climate and disease-free airs. By the 1930s more than 150 Western-style stone houses dotted Moganshan’s bamboo-clad slopes, together with a swimming pool, seven tennis courts, two churches, and even a castle. Some were occupied by Chinese bon viveurs. Even Kuomintang leader Chiang Kai-shek honeymooned here with his beautiful wife Soong Mei-ling in 1927. Less desirable elements included the notorious mob boss “Big Ears” Du, who ran Shanghai’s opium trade with ruthless efficiency. “Moganshan became a cosmopolitan playground for the rich, the famous, and the infamous,” says Feng Zhu. “You had political leaders and European entrepreneurs rubbing shoulders with notorious gangsters and Catholic priests.” The tennis tournaments and decadent cocktail parties ended abruptly when the Chinese

Communists came to power in 1949 and evicted all foreigners. Five years after his victory Mao Zedong came to Moganshan, where he installed himself in a stone villa deep in the forest. Taking advantage of the peace and solitude, it was here he penned China’s new socialist constitution. “Moganshan was taken over by the military,” says Zhu. “And it became a secret hideaway, with tunnels and air-raid shelters for the da tudou (“big potatoes” or party elite).”

BORN-AGAIN BACKWATER After years of obscurity, Moganshan’s star is slowly on the rise once again. No longer off limits, the area is gradually becoming the destination of choice for Shanghai’s increasingly moneyed, discerning, and environmentally conscious residents. More than 100 Moganshan villas still survive. A growing number now house a new generation of chic boutique hotels and lodges, while other resorts have been tastefully crafted from stone, wood, and other sustainable materials. >

Criss-crossed with trails, the lush mountainous setting is perfect for hiking, biking, and horse riding, with naked Stables also offering more sedate activities such as swimming, calligraphy, yoga, pottery, and kite flying. of emerald plantations draped across the landscape like gently rippled corduroy, with some resorts offering their guests the opportunity to pick and roast their own shoots in spring and summer. Moganshan white tea (bai cha), said to be one of Mao Zedong’s favourites, is among the most famous and aromatic teas in China. The Camellia sinensis plant, characterised by its small leaves, is indigenous to the region, and can still be found growing wild across the mountainsides. White tea is the name given to the new growth buds and young leaves that are plucked before they are fully opened (it is the silver hairs on the buds that give the young leaves a white appearance). With minimal post-harvest processing, white teas are even more delicate than their green counterparts and boast higher quantities of antioxidants. “White teas from Moganshan are increasingly popular with health conscious Chinese and foreigners,” says Feng Zhu. The same could be said of this enchanting hill station itself. Cool, clean, and green, its power to reinvigorate body and mind is still as potent as in days of old. 

ellness is fashionable, and mixologists from London to New York are paying attention. The trendiest bars are replacing sugary, booze-laced cocktails with sophisticated, grown-up drinks made from all-natural ingredients in a quest to unearth new flavour alchemies. And for mindful millennials who prefer to abstain, the timing couldn’t be better. In New York, creative drinks without the booze buzz are all the rage. From non-alcoholic distilled spirits and cocktails to wholesome juices, there are plenty of options for the rising sober crowd.

And there is a whole lot of love served up in their classic non-alcoholic drinks like the CherryLime Rickey, made with lime and cherry syrups and seltzer, and Farmacy originals such as The Pink Poodle, made with hibiscus syrup, cold seltzer, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. But the best seller of Brooklyn Farmacy is the chocolate Egg Cream. Containing neither eggs nor cream, it is the quintessential Brooklyn retro beverage, featuring an unlikely combination of seltzer, milk, and chocolate syrup best consumed immediately before it loses its fizz. Whether they keep coming for the egg creams, the ambiance, or the community, fans remain loyal to their local soda fountain. 

Innovative, planet-friendly eating is among the hottest food trends of 2018.

From foragers to flexitarians, Finns are piling lovelier seasonal greens onto their plates in a bid to improve their health and reduce their carbon footprint.

PICK A FLOWER Peppery nasturtium, spicy squash blossoms, and sweet dandelion buds taste as yummy as they look.

F L AV O U R S O F T H E F O R E S T Early summer is the best time to go foraging for wild herbs such as nettle, goutweed, and fireweed. Fragrant wild edibles are vitamin-rich power foods that taste great in salads, smoothies, and stir-fries. Best of all, Finland’s forests are among Europe’s cleanest. For recipes, check out The Wild Herb Cookbook by Sami Tallberg.

BUGS À LA CARTE From cricket crackers to choco-coated locusts, insect cuisine is an eco-friendly source of protein.

G R E E N E R E AT Z Climate change and the health boom are among the reasons why flexitarianism is a rising trend in Finland. “Today there are dozens of great new alternatives from pulled oats to processed beans,” says food strategist Niina Hietalahti. “And with plenty of tasty veggie street foods now available, it has become easy to say no to bulk meat.”

Nothing says relaxation like a good steam in a hot sauna. Best of all, research confirms that sweltering heat is good for your health, helping to relieve tension, unwind muscles, and improve sleep quality. The latest trends in Finland include sauna yoga and acoustic massages performed while bathing. “The ideal sauna experience is created through the joint effect of scents, sensations, and a visual aspect,” says Carita Harju, executive manager of Sauna from Finland. “I take a sauna to relax nearly every day. DEEP-DIVE I N T O N AT U R E

Last year, Finland’s national parks had over 3.1 million visitors, marking ten per cent growth on the previous year. Clearly, something is driving Finns into the lap of nature – and that “something” appears to be the quest for better quality of life. “Research and customer surveys show that visits to national parks have clear health and wellbeing benefits,” states Päivi Rosqvist from Parks & Wildlife Finland. “Pristine nature calms the mind, prevents stress, and increases social wellbeing. The physical benefits are obvious. Not only does hiking outdoors improve your fitness, but it also lowers your blood pressure and boosts your immune system.” It has been scientifically proven that spending time outdoors improves our health by getting us moving. Without noticing it, we move around more briskly outdoors. Nature revitalises us, increases our ability to focus, and improves our mood, offering a multisensory sense of wellbeing that resonates long after we return indoors. 8

Excellent on-the-ground services make Finland’s national parks a safe, easy destination for a one-day visit from urban centres. Close to the capital, the well-marked trails in Nuuksio National Park offer a genuine taste of the wild only 45 minutes from the city centre. Further north, Rosqvist recommends Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park in Lapland. “There you literally breathe the cleanest air in the world. You can hike from fell to fell with just your backpack, and local entrepreneurs take your luggage to the next point of overnight stay.” The youngest of Finland’s 40 national parks is Hossa, which offers great mindfulness activities such as fishing in its many ponds. “Or, for an energy boost, try mountain biking on its mercifully flat routes. The easy-to-hike trails take you to rock paintings depicting stories of shamanism dating back thousands of years,” says Rosqvist.

The archipelago trail in Turku was the undisputed winner. Crossing island to island, often by cable ferry, the route attracts bikers with its stunning coastal views. Åland island between Finland and Sweden offers a wide network of easy archipelago routes and striking landscapes. The 21-kilometre route that hugs Lake Tuusula takes cyclists to historic views that inspired many Finnish painters and authors. The northern city of Oulu is best known for its winter biking, but the best season to enjoy the 730 kilometres of local bike lanes is the summer. The country route from Helsinki to the historic city of Porvoo takes cyclists through charmingly rural landscapes just outside the capital.

MAINOS

A.Vogel – voimaa luonnosta Sveitsiläinen Alfred Vogel innostui jo nuorena lääkekasveista ja terveellisestä elämäntyylistä. Vakuuttuminen luonnon ihmeellisestä voimasta vei hänet elämänpituiselle matkalle luonnonmukaisen terveydenhoidon pariin sekä tutkimusmatkoille eri kaukomaihin ja alkuperäiskulttuureihin. Tinkimätön laatu on ykkösperiaatteita Vogelin tuotteissa. Rohtokasvit kasvatetaan puhtaasti, luomuviljelyn standardien mukaisesti. Luonnonvaraiset kasvit puolestaan kerätään vastuullisesti, luontoa kunnioittaen.

A.Vogel – power from nature Unconditional top quality is one of the leading principles of Vogel products. The medicinal plants are grown in a pure environment, in accordance with the standards of organic farming. In turn, the wild plants are collected in a responsible manner that respects nature. To obtain the best effect, we always use the plants when they are fresh and in their entirety. For example, Echinacea is 90 % more effective against viruses while fresh, as compared to when dried. Vogel’s innovative herbal medicinal products stand on a foundation of long tradition and modern research. The efficacy and safety of the products are verified through clinical studies performed in collaboration with distinguished experts and universities. 更多中文信息见网页:www.vogel.fi

Heureka’s exhibition looks to the future Take a seat in Simone’s hairdressing salon, help Laura to repair a hacked food machine, and work with Auvo to design the world’s tallest wooden skyscraper! Heureka’s new exhibition Seven Siblings from the Future focuses on Jukola, an urban utopia. What will Finland look like in 50 years’ time? Heureka’s new exhibition peeks, among other things, into the professions of the future, a food machine making synthetic food and a hyperloop train which speeds through Jukola at 1000 kilometres per hour. In Jukola, the city of the future, a farming robot grows food and an artificial intelligence follows the visitors’ moves.

“Seven Siblings from the Future represents a new kind of exhibition narrative.” The themes of the exhibition, such as wellbeing, mobility, food and housing, are examined through the seven siblings of the future. Visitors help the siblings to make choices in their everyday lives. “We want the visitors to experience the themes of the exhibition firsthand. Each of the siblings represents different values and choices, and they also see our future in seven different ways”, says Heureka’s Experience Director Mikko Myllykoski. The narrator of the exhibition is artificial intelligence Jennifer, who follows the visitors through Jukola. In this interactive exhibition, the visitors’ choices are saved into their wristbands, and at the end of the exhibition tour, each visitor receives a personal value profile. Visitors also find out which of the siblings is closest to their own values. The exhibition ends with Heureka’s robot Pepper and Jennifer giving an analysis of the future of Finland. “Seven Siblings from the Future represents a new kind of exhibition narrative. The visitor plays the lead and receives feedback about the choices he or she has made, as well as those of the other visitors”, Myllykoski explains. The exhibition aims to get people to reflect on the future, the different future scenarios and the impact each of us can have on the future through our own choices. Seven Siblings from the Future is a joint project between Heureka, the Finnish Science Centre and the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra. The exhibition is part of the official programme in honour of Finland’s 100 years of independence and of Sitra’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

The exhibition is on display at Heureka 17.11.2017-13.1.2019.

KEMI

FEEL THE ARCTIC MAGIC

When you think of the word “arctic” you think of the freezing cold. But the Arctic is more than that. It’s the essence of Lapland and embodies the region’s nature, people, and distinct change of seasons. Kemi, a small Finnish town by the sea, offers a taste of everything Arctic from grilling sausages on an open fire to foraging for berries and mushrooms.

FROZEN FORTRESS

MAGICAL SKY

Since the sea stays frozen for nearly half of the year, visitors can experience authentic winter activites such as a cruise on an ice breaker ship, rally car driving over the frozen sea, and of course snowmobiling. But when the ice and snow melt, the waters call for sailing and fishing, while the forests beckon hikers. And if you want to experience a true Finnish custom, take a traditional steam sauna followed by a dip in the sea.

Imagine sipping a cocktail surrounded by impressive ice sculptures even in the midst of summer. Well, the biggest snow fort in the world is turning into a year-round travel destination! Visitors to Kemi’s SnowCastle will soon be able to step into a wintry wonderland regardless of season. To top off your visit, a bit of pampering is in order in the luxurious spa and sauna department.

If you’re looking for that something different, book a stay at the awardwinning Seaside Glass Villas. The small one-bedroom villas are made of glass walls and ceilings and are an ideal place to enjoy a light show like no other. From late August until April you can experience the magic of the northern lights; while during the summer, you can bask in the wonder of the white nights, as the sun never sets below the horizon.

The Sauna Capital of the World 20 public saunas

Old & modern

All year round

If you have yet to experience a Finnish sauna, you simply must try one in Tampere.

Tampere is home to the Rajaportin sauna, Finland’s oldest public sauna, established in 1906. You can also try a 100 year-old smoke sauna. Two more urban saunas will launch in 2018. Laukontori sauna will be located by the Pyhäjärvi lake, and Tullin sauna will be on a rooftop – with a gastro pub in the complex. Yum!

If you’d prefer a lakeside sauna, we recommend Tampere’s public saunas by the water. Tampere has over 200 lakes, so there are plenty of places to cool off. You can go to sauna all year round – even in the winter. A sauna, a frozen lake, a hole in it; that’s all you need to understand our sauna culture, and a bit of ”sisu” too.

There are 20 public saunas in the city of Tampere and the surrounding countryside. We love our saunas – you can relax, get clean and they bring people together.

HANKO BY THE SEA Finland’s southernmost town is fast regaining its status as a wellness hotspot. TEXT KAREN MACKENNA

ituated on a peninsula and surrounded on three sides by the Baltic, Hanko has long been a popular seaside destination during summer months. At the turn of the last century it was renowned as a spa town for the Russian aristocracy. The Spa Park occupied the stretch of pristine shoreline that runs between Neljän Tuulen Tupa (The House of Four Winds) on Pieni Mäntysaari (Little Pine Island) and the Monument of Liberty honouring Finland’s independence from Russia in 1917. Fashionable guests would travel to Hanko for the sea air and a chance to visit the exclusive resort. The ornate 19th-century wooden villas built along the waterfront are impressive reminders of that bygone era and Hanko’s iconic bathing huts still line the beaches.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS F O R A L L its riches, Hanko is a humble jewel at heart and its locals have always sought wellbeing in their contact with nature. Ilse Klockars runs Outdoor Happiness, an eco-tourism business that offers people a chance to experience the natural beauty of Hanko and its environs. “I think that the longer you spend in nature, the better you feel. It is easy to enjoy nature here: the forest, the sea, and the beaches; a trip through the forest calms you down and increases the feeling of wellness,” says Klockars.

HANKO ARCHIPELAGO THE R E AR E a number of charming islands to visit in the archipelago outside Hanko. By far the most popular is Bengtskär, 25 kilometres southwest of Hanko, where you can sleep in the historic 1906 lighthouse, enjoy a homecooked archipelago meal, and relax in the wood-fired sauna. There is also a museum documenting the fierce 1941 Battle of Bengtskär between Finnish and Soviet troops. Ferries to Bengtskär leave several times a day from Hanko’s Eastern Harbour but are weather dependent.

Our garments prove themselves every day in tough environments. Visible, durable and comfortable. SEA SPA

IN 2 01 7 Hanko saw the opening of the luxurious Regatta Spa. Perched on the smooth rocks above Tehtaanniemi Park, the spa provides an upscale wellness retreat in an exotic Nordic locale and is part of a broader complex that has transformed Hanko’s Eastern Harbour. The Regatta Hotel, designed by celebrated architect Lars Sonck and completed in 1900, was one of the original spa hotels. Recent renovations have preserved the character of the elegant Art Nouveau building and a new block of luxury flats adjacent to the hotel offer unparalleled vistas of the seascape.

HANKO PICKS

SURF’S UP D UE TO HANKO’S windswept location, the town is an under-the-radar mecca for cold water surfing. And on a good day, dozens of colourful sails dance above the water on Tulliniemi Beach while kite surfers skim the surface. Stefan Randstrom grew up in Hanko and was part of the early windsurfing scene there in the 1980s. “Tullis is a classic surf beach with wind and waves and an incredible location that’s hard to beat,” says Randstrom. Surf Club Hanko’s Matti Suutarinen believes that the area will only become more popular for surfing tourists. A new clubhouse, Oasis Hanko, recently opened to the public and offers surfers a place to chill out and warm up when they come in from the sea. 

1. For the best salmon soup in town, head to the lesserknown Hangonkylä Harbour and På Kroken eatery that boasts a relaxed café with a great patio as well as an excellent seafood restaurant.

2. Gunnarstrand is a whimsical stretch of sandy beach just east of Tulliniemi with picturesque fishing huts strung along the shoreline. The secluded spot is an ideal place to take a dip in the sea.

3. During summer months a festive Evening Market in the Eastern Harbour is held Wednesdays from 4 to 8 pm with music and colourful stalls selling antiques, local crafts, foods, and seasonal produce.

Retirement’s silver lining More people entering their pensionable years are sufficiently fit and active to fulfil long-cherished dreams or take new paths in life. TEXT TIM BIRD ILLUSTRATION MARIKA MAIJALA

W

hen Paul McCartney wrote The Beatles hit When I’m Sixty-Four at the callow age of 25, he must have thought, like most of us do at that stage of life, that 64 was an unimaginably distant landmark. He probably also thought that the idea of performing in sold-out stadia to adoring fans well into his 70s was laughable. Old age isn’t what it used to be. Not all of us are as popular or as talented as Beatle Paul, but many of us find ourselves healthier and more active than we thought we would be as the decades accumulate. Most of us will be grateful for any kind of pension that comes our way, but just as many are reluctant to use the word “retirement” to describe their status when it does. In the meantime, most people are going to have to work longer to get that pension. In Japan, for example, with the world’s highest life expectancy, the government is considering raising the mandatory retirement age for civil servants from 60 to 65. Meanwhile, Statistics Finland predicts that the number of pensioners in Finland will exceed the population in the 18 to 40 age bracket by as soon as 2029.

The so-called “silver” demographic is a force to be reckoned with.

LIBERATING MATURITY “When are you going to settle down?” For those of us who grew up in the 1960s and ’70s, that was the exasperated mantra of parents to their restless children. How things have changed in a world in which nomadic retirement is a growing trend, where retirees hit the global road to explore the places they dreamed of visiting while they were slogging away at their nine-to-fives. But there are other ways to enjoy the liberation of maturity without a vast financial cushion. Take Lena Salmi, 64. With a background in journalism, she is studying for a PhD at Helsinki University, focusing on Sámi (Lappi) sports. She is also a skateboard fanatic. “I began with the longboard when I was just 57. This all began because I owned the most beautiful custom-painted bike and I worried that it would be stolen when I went swimming. Then I suddenly got it into my mind that a longboard will fit into the lockers. So I bought one,” says Salmi.

MAY–JUNE 2018 BLUE WINGS 73

Writing is a frequent source of fulfilment for retirees. Salmi cites a sense of community and freedom as reasons for her subsequent immersion in the skateboarding world. “I’m an older-than-usual skateboarder, and people give me high fives. The boys in skate parks – they just want to show me their tricks, and after that we’ll talk.” Skateboarding has opened doors for Salmi. “I have travelled in Sweden, Norway, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Romania, Slovenia, Russia, and Spain. Last autumn I went to Uganda and took some skateboards with me to give to Ugandan kids there.”

TEENAGE DREAM COME TRUE Guy Foster, who lives near Canterbury in southeast England, is pursuing a less nomadic dream – but one that he has had since he was a teenager. On turning 60, at the end of a 30-year career in chartered accountancy, he got round to forming the rock band he’d always been aching to put together. A gifted guitarist and songwriter, he never lost his passion for music, playing occasionally as a duo with his wife in local pubs. But the itch to form the full-blooded guitar, bass, and drums outfit known as Lawyers, Guns & Money was only satisfied when work obligations were put behind him. “I always wanted to be a professional musician but on average, accountancy pays much better,” says Foster. “I discovered that one can make a living from music but only by playing songs you don’t like in venues you don’t like. But you probably have to be more singleminded than me if you want to make a go of it. Or luckier.” His accountant career took him to small and large companies. “It’s rarely as boring as people think but not even creative accounting is quite as much fun as being a creative musician. But at least you generally know where your next meal’s coming from.” Now, however, the very fact that he is not depending on the music for income makes it more attractive. “Being in a band later in life is much easier but mainly because I’m not trying to make a

74 BLUE WINGS MAY–JUNE 2018

living out of it. I still play songs I don’t much like in venues I don’t particularly want to play in but it’s not part of a career path so I can take the rough with the smooth.”

IT’S A BEAUTIFUL WORLD The advice of 73-year-old former policeman Alan Fairfax is to view retirement as a fresh new start. “When I finally retired from the UK Fraud Squad at the end of 2008 I started volunteering at my local hospital. I entered a competition by submitting a cruise review to Silver Travel Advisor and won a holiday. I couldn’t take the holiday but I became one of their travel advisors and started visiting ships on their behalf and writing about the experience. Others saw my writing and approached me to write for them. Last year I did three one-hour shows on Sky TV.” Writing of one kind or another is a frequent source of fulfilment for retirees. When Janine Marsh put her stressful job in banking operations management in the City of London behind her, she renovated an old farmhouse in France, acquired a menagerie of dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, and geese – and started blogging. Her first book, My Good Life in France: In Pursuit of the Rural Dream, was a bestseller and her blog, thegoodlifefrance.com has tens of thousands of followers. “I can’t imagine a leisurely retirement – life’s too short and the possibility to travel, learn new things, meet new people, and share with others, that’s far too precious to give up,” she says. “I am doing something that I have a passion for and I feel incredibly lucky that I can do this.” She encourages others to follow her example. “Whatever your passion is, whether it’s writing, travel, gardening, crafts, painting – there’s a way to make it more meaningful and maybe for others at a point in your life where you have the time.” Lena Salmi echoes this advice. “Don’t stay at home and think, well, that was my life. Try what you want, and if you find it wasn’t for you, who cares, you tried. You only have one life, enjoy it. You deserve it.” 

CITY REBORN

Once a forgotten corner of Europe, Lisbon has slowly emerged as an “it” destination. With a flourishing start-up culture, an attractive foreign investment scheme, and a new generation of chefs who are revamping the food culture, the Portuguese capital is enjoying a major renaissance. The best places to take it all in are the m iradouros (viewpoints) on top of the seven hills on which Lisbon was built. Finnair flies to Lisbon four times a week starting June 1.

between western Europe and Japan. This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Helsinki-Beijing route. Finnair was the first western European airline to offer non-stop flights between Europe and China. Today, Finnair operates two daily flights to Tokyo and one daily flight to Beijing, both flying the convenient northern route.

E-news onboard now offers customers on its longhaul flights a wide selection of digital newspapers in multiple languages, which customers can access with their own devices via the Nordic Sky portal, without purchasing an internet connection. Digital newspapers offer fresh news for every customer, while also supporting Finnair’s environmental goals by reducing aircraft weight. World of Finnair Sustainability

On target for emission cuts FINNAIR’S measures to reduce emissions are at the centre of its sustainability strategy and leading the way in aviation. The targets are transparent and achievable, and in line with those set by the industry, namely to improve fuel efficiency by 1.5 per cent annually, to attain carbon-neutral growth from 2020 onwards, and to halve emissions from the 2005 level by 2050. In addition, Finnair is slashing carbon dioxide emissions by 17 per cent by 2020 compared with the 2013 level. The updating of the long-haul fleet with Airbus A350 aircraft is already demonstrating its effectiveness. In 2017 the annual target was exceeded, and emissions were cut by 6.7 per cent measured on the basis of unit-specific revenue tonne kilometres of carbon dioxide.

“Aircraft weight has a direct bearing on fuel consumption,” explains Hanna Salmi, fuel efficiency manager. “If each Finnair passenger over a single year left out one kilo of luggage, it would lead to savings of 1.166 million kilos of fuel. That represents about 20 flights to Tokyo.” Outi Merilä, who leads operational environmental management, notes, “If passengers make the right eco-smart choices when flying, they can contribute to emission cuts by as much as 30 per cent. Choose an airline with modern, fuel efficient aircraft, fly direct routes, and avoid bigger, more crowded airports.” Merilä also adds that customers can donate Finnair Plus points to help charities such as UNICEF’s Schools for Asia and the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation in Madagascar.
