PUERTO VALLARTA

Viva Mexico TEXT BY SILJA KUDEL PHOTO BY OPIMAGES

WITH ITS OPEN-MINDED atmosphere, Puerto Vallarta is quickly making a name for itself both as a family-friendly and LGBT destination. In fact, it is the first city in Mexico to receive the “Gay Travel Approved” distinction from GayTravel.com. Puerto Vallarta ticks all the right boxes for a dream holiday, with sparkling beaches, picturesque streets, quirky shops, excellent restaurants, and an enticing night life along the Malecón. Zip-lining and water-sporting are among the many activities offered on the Playa Los Muertos (better known as Deadman’s Beach), which is also home to beachfront hotels, bars, restaurants, and services targeting niche markets. NATIONAL BUTTERFLY

Blue wings forever MARIMEKKO LIVERY

WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE about blue wings? Over 6,300 Finns voted the holly blue (Celastrina argiolus) as Finland’s national butterfly in a special campaign celebrating 100 years of Finnish independence. The online vote was organised by Finnish nature conservation organisations to raise awareness of species endangerment and habitat loss.

Rocking the runway KEEP AN EYE OUT at Helsinki Airport for Finnair’s new aircraft livery featuring Marimekko’s iconic “Kivet” pattern (Finnish for “rocks”). Thirty-eight giant dark blue orbs – the largest almost three metres wide – grace the fuselage of Finnair’s eleventh A350 aircraft, which joins the fleet this month.

Designed by Maija Isola in 1956, the retro print is already familiar to passengers from Finnair amenity kits, paper cups, slippers, napkins, and blankets. It took 16 days to complete the eye-catching paint job, which marks the fifth anniversary of design collaboration between Finnair and Marimekko.

STAIR-CLIMBING APP INVENTOR

Rocket to fitness

Timo Leppänen is the creator of Stairforce, a new app that boosts incidental exercise by gamifying stair climbing as “humanpowered space travel.” Q: How did you come up with the idea for Stairforce? A: When I was climbing the stairs at work, I visualised myself climbing a stairway into space. This struck me as a cool way to encourage people to dodge elevators. Q: Why is stair climbing so pop these days? A: Simplicity is in. Consumers are turning to leisure activities that bring simple moments of joy and don’t cost a dime.

CELEBRATING FLOPS

Q: What are Helsinki’s top stair-climbing spots? A: Helsinki Cathedral, even though the architect Carl Ludvig Engel never wanted the stairs! Malminkartanonhuippu is an artificial hill that provides breathtaking views across the city. For a good burn, take the stairs at Stockmann’s department store – they’re more attractive than the escalators! Stairforce is available through iTunes. stairforce.com

The lower floors of the Tokyo hotel will host a Muji flagship store, while the hotel itself will feature Muji furniture and accessories made from recycled wood.

TECH TREND

A new dimension in portraits PRESIDENT OBAMA ONCE stated that 3D scanning and printing “has the potential to revolutionise the way we make almost everything.” Now this future is getting a little bit closer, especially in South Korea, the world leader in 3D printing. IOYS is a Seoulbased company that has developed its own method of making stunning copies of anything – even you. But how does it feel to confront a life-like miniature replica of yourself in natural colours – fascinating or freaky? There’s only one way to find out. Customers at IOYS simply walk into a booth filled with 100 mounted cameras. Inside, they strike a pose while the cameras capture a sequence of pictures from multiple angles. After choosing the best shot, a 3D app forges the pictures into a 20 BLUE WINGS SEPTEMBER 2017

3D file. A 3D figurine of yourself is then printed out on one of the best 3D printers available on the market. The result is surprising in its richness of detail – particularly considering the technique is so new and significant improvements can be expected in coming years. With a chain of stores already active across South Korea, IOYS is expanding constantly. The most accessible outlet is in Dongdaemun Design Plaza, a striking edifice resembling a huge piece of molten metal, designed by Zaha Hadid. Sung Pyo Hong, an employee at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza shop, is a firm believer in the potential of the technology. “Having a 3D figurine of yourself or somebody you love is so much more vibrant and alive than a 2D picture.”

3D invasion Founded in 2015, IOYS plans to expand to the US and Europe. Prices vary by size. The smallest figurines are 5 cm tall, but the most popular sizes are 10 cm, 15 cm, or 20 cm, which cost €80, €125, or €250 respectively. Customers wanting a bigger version can be offered a special edition that is printed out in sections and then assembled. Delivery in 3-5 days; IOYS also delivers overseas. The plastic powder creates a hard, durable surface. The Projet 660 3D printer can print out details as small as 0.1 mm in full colour. ioys.co.kr

Nordic Americana

Earlier this year, Tuomo Prättälä and Markus Nordenstreng, aka Tuomo & Markus, arrived in Austin, Texas, hoping to make some noise amidst the industry buzz at SXSW. And noise they did make. Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke heaped praise on the duo’s performance and their “marvellous debut album.” A similar response greeted the release of Dead Circles in Finland last year, with listeners seduced by its rich melodies, warm acoustics, and jazz flourishes 22 BLUE WINGS SEPTEMBER 2017

Established artists in their own right, Prättälä’s soulful roots and Nordenstreng’s alt-country musings combine for a clutch of songs with a timeless feel. “We’re not a pop act that has a record that will be out of date in six months’ time,” Nordenstreng says. “Dead Circles sounds like it could have been recorded four years ago – or today. CLAY PLAY

Raw attraction

It was a lucky coincidence that Leena Kouhia started making ceramics for a living. Craving a break from her former career as a visual designer, she completed a master’s degree in philosophy, but finding a new job in her fifties turned out to be harder than expected. To cheer herself up she marched into a ceramics studio. “I have always worked with my hands and had a vision of this very rough tableware that I wanted to make,” she says. Working with clay felt right from the start. “I posted photos of my creations on Facebook and people started to ask whether they could get some,” says Kouhia. The final piece fell into place when trend analyst Susanna Björklund invited Kouhia to contribute to a design installation at the Habitare interior design fair in Helsinki. Soon Kouhia was flooded with so many orders that she rented a studio space and went all in. In just three years her designs have become a familiar sight in design stores, restaurants, and style-conscious homes – not to mention Instagram. Inspired by the rough, hand-made texture of her creations, Kouhia named her brand Raaka Rå, meaning “Raw” in Finnish and Swedish. “I was fed up with endlessly perfecting everything in my previous job. For me, my ceramics straddle the fine line between defined form and thoughtful irregularity,” she explains. With her intuitive connection with the physical, somewhat primitive nature of clay, Kouhia can well imagine herself working as an artisan for the rest of her career. “To quote my musician husband: Why would I retire from my own life? I feel like everything has finally come together.” raakaraw.com

Finnish nature offers not only peace of mind, but also plenty of free and delicious food.

W

ild greens can push their way through solid rock – that’s how strong they are, says biologist and environmental educator Anna Nyman as she picks a dandelion blooming between flagstones in her garden. She’s one of the co-founders of the Helsinki Wildfoods wellbeing brand, which boosts awareness of wild herbs and other products, activities, and tourism based around Finnish nature. “Collecting wild foods as a hobby brings tasty new flavours to home cooking. It also nurtures your body naturally through exercise and peace of mind – what we call wildfulness,” Nyman says. In Finland, nature is never more than a short bus or cycle ride away, as are treats such as mushrooms, berries, wild greens, or fish. The northern climate, the white nights of summer, and the chilly dark period of winter known as kaamos or polar night offer unique growing conditions for nature’s goodies and makes them particularly nutritious. Wild greens hit the sweet spot of today’s food trends and concerns: they are locally-grown, climatefriendly superfoods, and they also support job creation and exports. “Besides their nutrition levels, the competitive edge of Finnish wild plants is their amazing flavour. If you’ve got frozen spinach in your freezer, why not also nettles? We buy grocery store herbs that are originally

The northern climate makes nature’s goodies particularly nutritious. wild plants from the Mediterranean region – so hopefully our own wild greens will become an integral part of that herb selection,” says Nyman. RIGHT TO ROAM Thanks to the Finnish legal concept of everyman’s right, you can hike and pick wild plants in the forests, regardless of who owns the land. The right does not however allow any disturbance or collecting near anyone’s home. And certain activities, such as collecting tree shoots, lichen, or sap, require permission from the landowner. “Some plants are protected or poisonous, so you really have to be sure about what you’re picking,” she says. Early autumn is the time to harvest berries and mushrooms in Finland’s forests. Autumn is also wild game season, although hunting requires a permit. Forest berries are easy to recognise, but mushrooms are trickier. The country boasts more than 2,000 species, but only about 500 of them are edible. The same rule

Wild herbs give a kick to any dish.

applies to mushrooms and wild herbs: you must be 100 per cent certain of the species to avoid poisoning. There are also specific rules on how mushrooms must be prepared. “Responsibly gathered wild food is the best that we can eat – for both nature and our own health,” says Nyman. l Turn the page for six seasonal wild food recipes created by food journalist Tiina Rantanen and Anna Nyman of Helsinki Wildfoods.

Tiina Rantanen is a Helsinkibased food journalist who loves to see the world through her camera lens. Finnish food and raw ingredients have always been close to her heart. Jani Laukkanen is a Helsinkibased freelance photographer who is fascinated by light and its endless possibilities and beauty. The northern sun, sauna, and swimming are essentials of his September.

10 servings lactose-free, gluten-free 2 (ca. 500 g) cleaned whitefish fillets 2 tbs coarse sea salt 1 tbs sugar coarsely ground white or black pepper 4 tbs of crushed wild blueberries

20–25 servings lactose-free, vegan 1 l fresh small chanterelle mushrooms 1/2 dl olive oil 2–3 green onion stalks 1 tbs cloudberry jam (or grated rind of an organic lemon) salt black pepper minced parsley rye buttons (sold as Väinämöisen Palttoonappi)

Grind a bit of pepper onto the fish fillets. Mix the salt and sugar and sprinkle onto the inner sides of the fillets. Spread the blueberries on top. Lay the fillets side by side, wrap in foil, and allow to cure in the refrigerator for 24 hours under a light weight. Wipe off the excess salt and blueberries before slicing the fish. Cut thin slivers beginning at the tail ends. Serve on small Karelian pies or rye bread.

Fry the chanterelles until liquid begins to form. Add olive oil, chopped onions (and grated lemon peel). Simmer for a couple of minutes and season with salt, pepper, and cloudberry jam. Serve atop the rye buttons.

For “sapas,” seasonal Finnish tapas, top rye buttons with mushrooms and blueberry-cured whitefish.

Lisää on tulossa. Ylelliset SUV-mallit Edge Vignale ja Kuga Vignale nostavat maastureiden varustelutasovaatimuksia. Laadukkaasti viimeistelty Mondeo Vignale kiilaa tyylikkyydellään suositun Mondeo-malliston kärkeen. Perheille parasta matkustustasoa jo pitkään tarjonnut 7-paikkainen S-MAX nousee S-MAX Vignalella omaan luokkaansa.

Matkustamo on kaikissa malleissa levollisen hiljainen. Häneltä on kysytty, miksei jotain urheilullisempaa. Barkov on joka kerta vastannut: ”Kätevyys ja mukavuus menevät aina edelle.” Siksi Vignale. Vignale-malliston ajaton tyylikkyys juontaa juurensa visionääriseen torinolaiseen suunnittelijaan Alfredo Vignaleen (1913–1969), jonka kädenjälki on näkynyt muidenkin automerkkien luksusmalleissa. Ford Vignale -mallistoon pääsee tutustumaan lähemmin 4 FordStore- ja 31 Ford-liikkeessä. Lue lisää Vignalesta osoitteessa ford.fi.

Ford Fiesta Vignale on teknologisesti edistynein Fiesta.

Ylellinen ilme näkyy ja tuntuu mm. viimeistellyissä nahkapenkkien tikkauksissa.

ICONIC DANISH DESIGN Happiness expert Meik Wiking describes hygge as “a state where all psychological needs are in balance,” which might as well be a description of the Nordic interior design aesthetic. The best place to find out more – particularly the low-hanging lighting, which many believe physically embodies hygge – is at Denmark’s Design Museum. The museum’s exhibits chart the story of Danish design, but its buildings, including the shop, library, and café are pretty cosy, too. Bredgade 68 designmuseum.dk

ANDREW MELLOR

The untranslatable Danish word for “cosiness, happiness, relaxation, and companionship” is a point of international curiosity. But where’s the real hygge to be found in the Danish capital? Resident Andrew Mellor has five suggestions. TEXT BY ANDREW MELLOR

ANDREW MELLOR

BOHEMIAN BODEGA There’s nothing more hygge than dashing into a classic Copenhagen “bodega” to escape the winter cold and rain. The atmospheric and intimate Café Nick is one for the connoisseurs. It sits just down a street from St. Nicholas Church in an area once frequented by artists known as the Nicolai Bohemians, among them a homeless painter who went by the name of Tausser. Many of the original paintings inside – including two portraits of Tausser – were done by local artists in exchange for booze. Nikolajgade 20

3

DESIGNSPIRATION Experience hygge in Copenhagen’s legendary homewares store Illums Bolighus, described by Wallpaper as “a shrine to Scandinavian design.” The store contains just about every iconic Nordic design product imaginable. From clothes to cutlery (and yes, candles), you’ll find it here. But the feelings of warmth and cosiness that radiate through the store’s four floors may make you forget what you came for anyway! GLUTTON FOR FOOD No self-respecting hygge-hunter can come to Copenhagen without visiting the canal district of Christianshavn, so if you are hungry head for the French-style bistro Café Oven Vande (café on the water) for hearty food with cutesy views. And for that “full” feeling, look no further than the 200g Tournedos beef tenderloin. Overgaden Oven Vandet 44 cafeovenvande.dk TY STANGE

POPULAR PLAYGROUND As any Dane will tell you, hygge doesn’t have to be indoors – in fact, a particularly cosy activity is to bundle up and hit the pavement. But where to go? Best head for Øresteds Park, where the uneven landscape, designed by Henrik August Flindt in 1876, offers countless secluded spots. Kids can also try out what was Denmark’s first-ever public playground. Nørre Voldgade kk.dk/groenneomraader

LOVING THE LIZARD

“This is my first job in which I not only can but must drink beer during the workday. That’s why we only brew beers we like to drink,” says CEO Heikki Ylinen, head brewer and “master drinker” at the Fat Lizard Brewing Company in the Espoo district of Otaniemi. Prior to starting the business, Ylinen visited breweries around the world and learned the ropes in the US, the home of craft beer. “Eventually, we built our own brewing equipment to ensure that we can create perfect beers – every time.” And that’s no empty promise. Fat Lizard beers are brewed without compromise, with an absolute guarantee of freshness. “Generously hopped IPAs are best served fresh, like freshly baked bread. We deliver the beer ourselves straight from the brewery, and Fat Lizard Fresh Taps come with a guarantee that the beer is always under 30 days old, with all the aromas intact. We’re the first in the world to offer this,” notes Ylinen. Fat Lizard Brewing Company, 2013– Lämpömiehenkuja 3, Espoo fatlizard.beer

FIT FOR A TSAR The latest entrant on Helsinki’s craft beer scene is Ohrana, a designerly pub with a downstairs microbrewery. Every detail from the sleek beer glasses to the blackwalled décor is a study in understated elegance. A pun on the Finnish word for barley, ohra, the brewery takes its name from the Russian’s Tsar’s secret police, which were formerly headquartered in a nearby building. With its immaculate styling, the bar attracts a mixed clientele of aficionados and craft beer virgins – many of whom soon become regulars. “I like to mix a little bit of new and old and make drinkable beers with a little twist – but not trying too hard,” says head brewer Jani Suomalainen. Ohrana’s top sellers are Kölssi, a kölschstyle brew; Belgian-inspired Saison; and Ohrana APA. Suomalainen’s latest experiment is a boldly flavoured imperial stout, Mustalista (black list), which has garnered glowing praises from beer critics. AMERICAN BEAUTY Worth a visit if only for the cult location, Stadin Panimo is an experimental microbrewery tucked away in a nook of the old Suvilahti gas plant. On a Friday night, the bar is packed with tapas munchers who gladly pay extra for a truly aromatic amber tipple. The first sip of Rye India Vienna Lager instantly confirms why: the intensely fruity flavour puts supermarket beers to shame. “We use the finest American hops and infuse extra oomph by filtering the beer through a sieve full of fresh hops, like making fresh tea,” explains Sales Manager Ingrid Viertola. The entire process is executed by hand, including the mashing. “Even the smallest breweries normally use mechanical mixers, but we do it with a paddle – like medieval monks,” says Viertola. To date, the brewery has created over 600 beers, including unusual innovations such as Birch-Mead Lager and Grapefruit IPA. Stadin Panimo, 1998– Kaasutehtaankatu 1 stadinpanimo.fi

A BREWER’S TALE No visit to Helsinki would be complete without a ferry trip to the island fortress of Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Also mandatory is a stop at Helsinki’s oldest microbrewery housed in the pink stone barracks a few steps from the pier. Suomenlinna Brewery was founded in 1995, as soon as craft brewing was permitted in Finland. “The location was a perfect match. Finland’s first breweries were built on the island to quench the thirst of Swedish soldiers building the fort in the 18th century,” explains Brewing Director Jussi Heikkilä. Today bottling takes place on the mainland, but the microbrewery remains very much a handcrafting passion project. “Every malt bag, every batch, and every bottle is touched by the brewer’s very own hands. We know what’s in every bottle, and we can stand behind it.” Being Helsinki’s oldest craft brewery, the seven-strong team relies on the recipe that has carried them through a quarter century: “Pure, basic beers concentrating on quality.” Suomenlinna brewery, 1995– Suomenlinna C 1 jetty barracks suomenlinnanpanimo.fi/en

HYPER-LOCAL NEWCOMER A raved-about innovator on the craft beer scene is Vallilan Panimo, which brews its exclusive range in a former pharmaceutical plant in the industrial precinct of Vallila. Founded by Miika Haverinen – who turned his home-brewing hobby into a business two years ago – the six-man microbrewery produces small batches and sells most of its products within a radius of a couple of miles. “We really are craft-based, from bottling and labelling by hand to sales and marketing. We combine flavour and aesthetics,” explains Markus Koistinen,

designer of the brand’s clean graphic identity and packaging. Focusing on its core IPA range, the brewery’s top products include critic-lauded Vallila Amber Ale and Kyyneleet (Finnish for “tears”), an English Pale Ale made for the Finnish rapper Eevil Stöö. The brewery has also created the official low-alcohol beer of Kulttuurisauna, a design-minded public sauna in Merihaka. Vallilan Panimo, 2015– Nilsiänkatu 10 vallilanpanimo.fi

LITTLE BAVARIA

“Just like back home!” A group of German tourists praise the subtle hints of banana in the wheat beer at Bryggeri, a cosy restaurant and brewery in the heart of Helsinki’s historic centre. Bryggeri’s Weizen and other Germanstyle beers owe their authentic flavours to the German-born brewer, Mathias Hüffner, who works his magic in front of an audience in the middle of the restaurant. “Visitors can see, taste, feel, and smell the brewing process right in front of them while they enjoy a nice Scandinavian meal. We put love into our beer and food pairings,” says Managing Director and beer sommelier Olli Majanen. “We brew beers that we ourselves would like to drink. Purity, quality, and clean flavours are our calling card – we don’t pull any fancy tricks with wild yeast or berries,” he adds. “But we do experiment. Our 8.8% Rosé is a wine-beer hybrid spiced with hibiscus tea. It tastes like a German Riesling, but with a nice kick of hops at the back of your tongue.” Bryggeri Helsinki, 2013– Sofiankatu 2

A beer lover by birthright, Sydney-born Silja Kudel had a deliciously hoppy time researching this story.

Sampo Korhonen is a Helsinki-based photographer who’s glad to see craft breweries becoming more commonplace around Finland.

eated on a low stool outside Shanghai’s Xintiandi metro station, tousle-haired music student Wang Hui prepares for a day’s busking. His instrument of choice, the erhu, dates back over a thousand years. By contrast, the QR code (a matrix barcode) taped to his tips box could hardly epitomise a more contemporary trend. Hui doesn’t object to receiving cash from passers-by for his dulcet efforts. But the preferred method of payment is definitely a smartphone. “All they have to do is swipe the QR code,” he says. “It’s simple. And most Chinese have got their phones in their hands anyway, so the gesture to give something is almost spontaneous.” Today, China is transforming itself into a cashless society. In 2016, Chinese consumers spent 4.7 trillion euros through mobile payment platforms. This staggering sum represents 50 times the amount spent by American smartphone users over the same period. While consumers in the West still cling to credit and debit cards, their counterparts in China are leveraging the so-called late-mover advantage, leapfrogging plastic and moving straight from cash to mobile payments. The Chinese now use smartphones to pay for everything from meals and movie tickets to taxi fares and fuel. At some Buddhist temples, visitors can even boost personal karma by donating with a swipe of their RedMi or iPhone.

Selina Chan is a big fan of mobile payment.

“I use my smartphone multiple times each day to pay for pretty much everything,” says Selina Chan, director of marketing communications at The Langham Hotel in Shanghai. “It’s got to the point now where it feels strange to visit the ATM or have a pocket full of change.” THE DIGITAL DEMOGRAPHIC China’s rapid transition to mobile payment is largely being driven by the country’s millennials, who now account for over 30 per cent of the entire Chinese population. Born in the 1980s and 90s, this vast army of educated, increasingly wealthy and digitally engaged consumers is forcing a growing range of companies – both Chinese and Western – to re-examine how they do business. Like their demographic counterparts in the West, Chinese millennials spend much of their life online. What differentiates them is their mobility. According to research by Deloitte, around 97 per cent of China’s millennial generation now own

smartphones. Deloitte’s figures show that more than half of this generation access the internet through their smartphone over 26 times a day, and 10 per cent over 100 times a day. Demonstrating a willingness to adopt new mobile apps and websites, millennials have underpinned China’s m-commerce boom, embracing new lifestyles that have revolutionised the way they consume content, communicate, shop, and eat. More than half of all digital commerce in China – worth an estimated 636 billion euros in 2016 – is now carried out by smartphone users. “Through their use of mobile platforms, as well as their increasing spend on health, technology, travelling, service, education, and luxury products, Chinese millennials are changing the very nature of retail in China,” says Zennon Kapron, director of Asia-based financial research firm Kapronasia. With many consumers still averse to using credit cards, and more and more Chinese stores and restaurants going cashless, making a mobile payment is, in a growing number of cases, the most practical option. “There’s a saying in China: ‘Don’t eat next year’s

food this year’,” says 33-year-old Shirley Jiang, public relations manager at the Bolian Resort & Spa in Chongqing. “Many Chinese don’t like to be in debt. I use my mobile to pay because I don’t want a credit card, and the payment is safe and fast. With one swipe of my finger I can unlock a QR code that can be scanned by the vendor immediately. It takes less than 10 seconds.” A TALE OF TWO PLATFORMS Only a few years ago, Joyce Yang, a 28-yearold office worker from Shanghai, paid her landlady with a massive wad of banknotes. Paying the utilities for her apartment involved trips to three different banks, where she would pay with yet more cash. “It was a huge waste of time,” she says. “I didn’t like walking around with so much cash either.” Today, thanks to Alipay, Yang’s financial frustrations are a thing of the past. Using China’s most popular online payment platform, she pays her landlord, and her utilities, by smartphone. “For me, Alipay is incredibly convenient,” she says.

“It’s a total no-brainer to use it.” Today, more than half of all daily money transactions in China are made using Alipay or rival WeChat Pay. Together, the two platforms currently service around 90 per cent of all Chinese mobile payments. The battle between Alipay and WeChat is a story of two different business models. Alipay was launched in 2004 as an internet-based payment service using the e-commerce platform Alibaba, and developed for mobile with the Alipay app five years later. By 2016, Alipay was processing 175 million transactions per day, 60 per cent of which were completed through a smartphone. If the strength of Alipay comes from Alibaba’s portfolio of e-commerce businesses, then the strength of WeChat Pay is underpinned by the huge popularity of the WeChat app (China’s answer to WhatsApp and Facebook combined). Released in 2011 by internet service provider Tencent, WeChat now boasts over 900 million active monthly users. Using the WeChat Pay wallet, they enjoy pretty much the same benefits as Alipay users. Alipay and WeChat Pay are now evenly balanced, with both platforms making forays into the international market. Who will come out on top remains to be seen. “There has been a dramatic shift over the past year as WeChat Pay has leveraged its social media advantage to drive mobile payments,” says Zennon Kapron. “Overseas, a lot will depend on the partnerships that each platform is able to develop.” A recent survey found that over 30 per cent of Chinese internet users now believe their country will witness the end of cash within the next decade. If that point comes, the country that gave us paper money will have come full circle. l

FINNAIR’S MOBILE SERVICES TAKE OFF In January 2017, Finnair became the world's first airline to allow travellers to pay for in-flight shopping and services with Alipay. The service is now available on all Finnair's China flights, which have already witnessed a 100 per cent increase in sales. "With many Chinese people accustomed to using mobile payment services at home, we wanted to offer them the same convenience when they travelled," explains Mikko Kiviniemi, Finnair's head of Design. "With Alipay already available, WeChat Pay will soon follow." To improve the traveller experience, Finnair has also been a front runner with the use of Facebook chatbots. These can help passengers with a range of simple tasks, such as finding the most appropriate flights, checking prices, and managing bookings.

52 BLUE WINGS SEPTEMBER 2017

"We appreciate that bots are often no match for humans when it comes to providing assistance," says Finnair's Kiviniemi. W

hile the story of the Wright Brothers and their seminal role in the history of flying is well known, far fewer of us are familiar with the name Alberto Santos-Dumont. Which is a shame, because the life of this wealthy Brazilian and pioneer of aviation is a colourful tale of eccentricity and bravado. Born in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais in 1873, Santos-Dumont moved to Paris with his parents when he was 18. With his head already in the air, he immediately set off for the Eiffel Tower to ride the escalators. He was soon dreaming of a world in which everyone had their own individual hot air balloon, and won a 20,000-dollar prize in 1901 for flying around the Eiffel Tower in a homemade dirigible. The irrepressible Santos-Dumont soon graduated from balloons to heavier-than-air flying machines. In October 1906, he flew 60 metres in the 14-bis, or 14 Mark II, a rudimentary airplane constructed largely from bamboo and piano wire, and powered by a stuttering 24 horsepower motor. Three years after the Wright Brothers’ “Flyer” took to the air in North Carolina, it was Europe’s first public flight. He may have been outflown by the Americans, but Santos-Dumont broke new ground in one respect. It was during the course of his airborne exploits that the Brazilian experienced difficulties extricating his pocket watch, and complained about this to his good friend, the renowned Parisian watchmaker Louis Cartier. In 1904, Santos-Dumont took to the air wearing Cartier’s resultant creation – one of the first ever

wristwatches – attached to his arm with a leather strap and small, ornate buckle. A stylish (and later mass-produced) timepiece named Santos, it could be used for navigation and to calculate fuel burn, as well as for accurate timekeeping. The era of the aviator watch had begun. TIMELESS IMPORTANCE As aviation took off during the First World War, wristwatches became increasingly sophisticated and commonplace. In 1931, American aviator Charles Lindbergh and Swiss watchmaker Longines teamed up to release a model that pilots could use with a sextant and nautical almanac to calculate longitude. “In those days navigation was solely based on manual timing and visual clues, so it was easy for pilots to lose their bearings,” says Markku Lehti, CEO of De Motu Watches, a Finnish watch company based at Helsinki-Malmi Airport. “Wind speed measurements were inaccurate; thus, it was extremely important to perform constant time, speed, heading, and position checks.” These days, high-end watches from brands such as Cartier and De Motu Watches are marketed as much at aviator buffs as they are at professional pilots. With an accurate timepiece and magnetic compass still found in the cockpit of every aircraft, modern aviators can now choose whether they use their instrumentation or own watch to measure processes such as de-icing treatments, engine start cycles, and take-off thrust limits. Over a century since Santos-Dumont’s 14-bis first left the ground, neither pilots nor airline passengers fumble for pocket watches as they take to the air, but the legacy of the courageous Brazilian lives on in the sky time we live and work by. l

O

n a sunny evening in June in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto Park, 130,000 people, the biggest crowd ever gathered in Finland for a public event, gaze intently upwards to the south, scanning the horizon above the sea and islands. They’re waiting for the arrival of the Red Arrows but they’re looking the wrong way. With a sudden roar, at 17:55 pm on the dot, the planes sweep across the sky – from the north. The Red Arrows aerobatic team is renowned for this tactic but it still takes the crowd by surprise. Nobody complains as the British RAF Hawk jets rip across the Suomenlinna island fortress and harbour areas, leaving vapour streamers and corkscrews loops of red, white, and blue in their wake. They finish by tracing a trademark heart in the sky, shot through with an arrow, naturally. The Red Arrows display is a highlight of a show that includes every aspect of aviation, including paragliders, air-sea rescue team demonstrations, appear-

ances by a range of historic aircraft and helicopters, and the dramatic low fly-past of a Finnair Airbus A350. The show, organised by the Finnish A viation Museum, is part of the Finland 100 celebrations, marking a century of Finnish independence. Founded in 1923 just six years after independence, Finnair was one of a number of partners involved with the show. “We imagined that the Air Show would be a smaller event than the one that happened. Our principles were that the show should be a public event and that it should be free,” says Markku Kyyrönen, Director of the Finnish Aviation Museum. PLANS FOR A NEW MUSEUM On Kyyrönen’s office wall at the museum, which is located a kilometre or so from Helsinki Airport’s passenger terminals, a framed poster from the 1950s advertises a much earlier air show in Kaivopuisto. The last time an air show was held here was in 1955 and Kyyrönen pulls out a copy of an old sketched map of the district. The areas marked on this reveal that the traffic restrictions were almost identical to those in force for the 2017 show.

A crowd of 130,000 in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto watched displays by aircraft old and new.

60 BLUE WINGS SEPTEMBER 2017

All eyes on the Red Arrows over the Helsinki archipelago

Finnair was a partner for the centenary show and Kyyrönen is grateful for Finnair’s participation in the form of the Airbus A350 fly-past across the coastal islands and harbours of the Finnish capital that drew gasps of admiration from the crowd. The Red Arrows of the British RAF were perhaps the most anticipated highlight, displaying their trademark speed, precision, and flair. The last time the Red Arrows appeared over Kaivopuisto was in 1970, when the team was on a tour of Finland that also thrilled audiences in Turku and Tampere. TRADITIONAL AIR-SHOW VENUE Kaivopuisto is an established venue for Helsinki air shows. Shows and other aviation-themed public events have been held in the area, especially during the early years of Finnish independence, promoting what was then the excitingly novel art of flying to the public. Many individual aerobatic groups, both from Finland and abroad, have performed in the area since the last big show in 1955. Other highlights in 2017 included appearances of Typhoon, Draken, and Hornet jets, and historic Super Puma and Dornier 228 aircraft. Perttu Karivalo, probably Finland’s most experienced air show director, directed the show. “Our mission is to arouse public interest in aviation and aviation history. The Kaivopuisto event exceeded our wildest dreams in terms of that,” says Kyyrönen. l

HISTORY OF FLIGHT The Finnish Aviation Museum is a short detour from Helsinki Airport, close to the Aviapolis railway station and adjacent to the Hotel Clarion. Guided tours and visits to four flight simulators are part of the attraction, along with an exhibition of 70 aircraft, including Douglas DC-3 and Convair Metropolitan planes, and a well-stocked souvenir shop. It houses Finland’s biggest collection of gliders, as well as research rooms, an aviation library and archive, and an auditorium seating 200. The Finnish Museum of Aviation is located at Karhumäentie 12 in Vantaa. ilmailumuseo.fi/en/

To celebrate its centenary, Finland has inaugurated a new national park. Hossa in the Kainuu region – already a favourite among hikers and anglers – takes visitors on a journey back to the Stone Age. TEXT AND PHOTOS BY VILLE PALONEN

ur rowing boat glides slowly across a small lake. All we can hear are the high-pitched calls of a blackthroated loon – there are no sounds of civilisation within earshot, nor the usual maddening buzz of mosquitoes. It’s so serene that we even spot a mother moose and her calf calmly trotting on the opposite shore. We’re only a hundred kilometres south of the Arctic Circle, so the sun is still bright at 10 pm – the best time of day for fishing. We row slowly around the lake, trolling a couple of tiny wobblers behind our boat. Suddenly a rod bends. Is it a grayling? Is Hossa finally living up to its reputation as an angler’s paradise? It’s soon clear that our catch is much larger than a grayling – it’s a northern pike. After many twists and turns, we finally manage to net it. It’s not what we were after, but there’s no reason to complain – a three kilo pike will provide a few hearty meals. On the way back to our rustic cabin we catch two large perch, each weighing more than half a kilogram. After a couple of hours in the smoker, they will make a delicious dinner. DESERVED DESIGNATION The Hossa Wilderness Area, near the Russian border south of Kuusamo, has been a popular destination for anglers and hikers for decades. The landscape is dotted with incredibly clear lakes, the dry ridges between them covered with

66 BLUE WINGS SEPTEMBER 2017

pine forest. An extensive trail network connects well-kept lean-to shelters and wilderness huts, where overnight stays are free of charge for all visitors. Even firewood and dry toilets are provided. These existing services weighed in Hossa’s favour when it was nominated as Finland’s 40th national park in 2016. The designation took effect in 2017 in honour of Finland’s centenary of independence. In addition to trekking and fishing, Hossa has plenty else to offer, including ancient rock paintings, relatively easy canoeing routes (multi-day guided canoe trips are very popular), as well as excellent forest trails for mountain biking. PREHISTORIC ART LIVES Among the most popular hikes is a day-trip to Värikallio cliff, which follows the footsteps of Finland’s Stone Age settlers. The four-kilometre trail crosses a couple of mosquito-infested swamps, but most of the walk is similar to Hossa’s other hiking trails, with high ridges offering spectacular views over small lakes, and dry pine forests full of ripe, juicy blueberries. When we reach the cliff, we find a dozen other hikers marvelling at Hossa’s main attraction: one of the largest prehistoric rock paintings in Finland. Rising sharply from the lake, the cliff is covered with images of shamans and moose figures. In ancient times this kind of location symbolised the totality of the universe: the underworld (water), the human world (rock), and the heavens (sky).

Hossa has dozens of small lakes connected by narrow straits.

Hossa’s national park status has already brought improvements in visitor amenities, one of them being a recently installed viewing platform at Värikallio cliff. Even when packed with hikers, the sturdy steel platform offers plenty of room for viewing the paintings at close range. The stick figures have faded after thousands of years of exposure to the elements, so we pull out an information leaflet. And behold: with the help of the manual (and a little imagination) we spot a moose, a couple of creatures that might be otters, and a shaman with a swan on his shoulder. With the day’s cultural quota filled, it’s time to return to our remote rental cabin. We heat up the sauna and begin planning our next fishing session – tonight we’re determined to catch a grayling! l

THE SKINNY ON HOSSA

Hossa is an hour’s drive from Kuusamo airport (85 km to the north). The park makes a good destination for a day-trip from Kuusamo. Hikers can also take a public bus (Kuusamo– Kajaani) and get off at Peranka village. From there a marked trail takes you to the closest wilderness hut (10 km) and onward to the Visitor Centre (38 km). Hossa offers superb free services including wilderness huts, lean-to shelters, and camping sites, all equipped with firewood and dry toilets. There are also larger camping grounds with amenities and rental cabins (book well in advance). Hossa Visitor Centre is open from February to October. The Visitor Centre has maps and other information about the area. It also sells fishing licenses and rents rowing boats. There are several tour operators that organise activities such as multi-day canoe trips for groups. nationalparks.fi/hossa

OXFORD SCIENTISTS TACKLE HAIR THINNING HOW A PILL CAN BOOST YOUR HAIR AND SELFCONFIDENCE Thomas Whitfield DPhil (Biochemistry), and the Oxford Biolabs® team of scientists developed TRX2® Molecular Food Supplement for Hair for people experiencing hair thinning and loss. TRX2® is one of Europe’s leading hair support regimens and is now sold in over 100 countries. TRX2® is the first of its kind to combine potassium, branched-chain amino acids, L-carnitine-L-tartrate, and nicotinic acid. These powerful nutrients stimulate the hair follicles and help facilitate the regular flow of nutrients. Other ingredients (zinc, selenium and biotin) contribute to the maintenance of normal hair. Compared to drugbased alternatives, TRX2® has no side effects, and does what it claims to do.

As a person experiences hair loss the function of potassium ion channels in hair follicles diminishes, resulting in shrinking follicles and thinning hair. Potassium ion channels are small protein structures that control the transport of potassium ions across the hair follicle’s cell membrane and are essential for retaining the follicle’s full biological activity and function.

King of Data DATA VOLUMES ARE GROWING EXPONENTIALLY. PASI SUTINEN OF TELIA ALREADY KNOWS, WHERE DATA IS HEADING NEXT. Pasi Sutinen at Helsinki-Malmi Airport.

A

ll is quiet at Helsinki-Malmi Airport. When a single aeroplane banks towards the airport, Pasi Sutinen’s face brightens up. Aviation enthusiast Sutinen sees more than just a plane. He sees data. “Data is already being gathered on traffic. As smart traffic becomes more common, real-time data will be used to monitor the movements and condition of every car, aeroplane and ship. This means data volumes will grow exponentially”, says Sutinen, who is Telia’s Director, Data Center Business. Of course, data will not be collected on traffic only. Research and advisory company Gartner predicts that over 20 billion objects will be connected to the IoT by 2020. “In addition to IoT, 5G is set to swell data volumes in the near future.” Where will all this data be stored, analysed and mined?

Data leads the way Pasi Sutinen has always been fascinated by data and its movements. He followed the data

trail straight from university to work as an IT architect for the food industry, then became a project manager for Sonera and moved to Tieto, where he progressed to Technical Director. Sutinen has been involved in 15 data center projects during his career. He returned to Telia in 2016 with just one thing in mind. “I wanted to create something new.”

These services will enable customer companies to raise their degree of automation and redeploy maintenance resources to development. Telia’s data center is unique. One of the largest and most modern open data centers in the Nordic countries is being built on a one-hectare site in the Pitäjänmäki area of Helsinki. The Telia Helsinki Data Center will cost 150 million euros to build and have room for almost 200,000 servers. It will be capable of processing and storing the data of PRODUCED BY CALCUS.COM

millions of business customers and its network connections will cover the entire globe. “We are building a highly automated and energy-efficient data center”, says Sutinen. The construction project is progressing on schedule. The data center’s topping out ceremony was held in June, and the center will be ready next spring. “The new data center will be a genuine digitalisation factory. For example, customers will be able to buy equipment facility, communications, networking and cloud computing services, as well as IoT and big data services of course.” These services will enable customer companies to raise their degree of automation and redeploy maintenance resources to development. Pasi Sutinen has enjoyed the data center project greatly. “I’ve always been interested in building and creating new things. With so many things already invented, to succeed you need to create and build new wholes from developed solutions.” ●

ella Marga hosts a unique shop-in-shop for Chanel accessories, one of only two such multi brand shops in Europe. Della Marga’s selection also includes some of the best collections from Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Moncler and Giorgio and Emporio Armani. In addition to its selection, the boutique is known for its unforgettably friendly service: ”For us, it is important that our service is at the same luxurious level as our products,” says Margaretha Aittokoski, owner of Della Marga. Aittokoski established her first clothes shop in 1981, starting her selection with a collection by Giorgio Armani. ”Armani had founded his label only five years before. He had already launched a number of collections and I unwittingly bought the most expensive items.” Next year, Aittokoski was offered another top label, a collection of Chanel accessories: ”The fact that I have this type of shop is completely

unique. In addition to us, there is only one other Chanel shop-in-shop in Europe.”

A career in beauty, one way or another Before starting her fashion business, Aittokoski had a long career as an elegant air hostess and she also worked as a PR hostess for a television channel. These international experiences made her understand beauty in a completely new way. ”There was a point where I was touring Finland with all the top models of the time, hosting fashion shows. I was inspired by the models’ habit of wearing black, even though black clothing was not trendy in Finland at the time. After visiting some European fashion fairs, I realised I could import black clothing myself. That’s where the idea for my own shop began.” ”Throughout my 36 years of entrepreneurship, I have always handled PRODUCED BY CALCUS.COM

FLIGHT MODE: CABIN SAFETY SAFETY INFORMATION is presented by the cabin crew at the start of each flight. This information is also listed on the safety instruction card in your seat pocket. Safety belts must remain fastened when the “Fasten safety belt” sign is on. For safety reasons we recommend keeping them fastened even when the sign has been switched off. Handheld devices can be used throughout the flight (including takeoff and landing) in airplane-mode. Laptops and larger devices must be stowed away during takeoff and landing, but can be used when the “Fasten safety belt” sign has been switched off.

FLY FINNAIR SUSTAINABILITY

VALTIONEUVOSTO

BETTER PLANET Finnair’s sustainability strategy is built on three principles: CLEANNESS Finnair has reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by more than 19 per cent per tonne-kilometre and is also working to systematically lower aircraft noise at airports and in the air. One key way to reduce carbon emissions and noise is to fly with modern aircraft: the average age of Finnair’s fleet is less than 10 years. The airline has received 10 of 19 forthcoming Airbus A350 aircraft, which cut back on fuel consumption and emissions by 25 per cent over the previous generation of planes.

SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH DIVERSITY FINNAIR is focused on promoting a more inclusive, multicultural workplace and society. As part of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the airline has committed to reporting on its progress to foster a diverse and accepting community, emphasising equality in its customer relationships, and encouraging employees to seek out opportunities for continuous education. Finnair is also closely involved in Society’s Commitment to Sustainable Development, Finland’s initiative to carry out the 2030 Agenda. The effort is run by the Prime Minister’s Office. More than 600

organisations including large companies, schools, non-profit organisations, and cities have made their own commitments and joined the movement. A new follow-up system for monitoring and measuring sustainable development in Finland will be unveiled in the fall. This July, at the UN High-Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development held in New York, Finnair was part of Finland’s delegation. During the two-week forum the delegation shed light on a variety of issues including sexual and reproductive rights, food security, and gender equality. commitment2050.fi

BEST PRACTICES FINNAIR is signatory to the UN Global Compact, an initiative aiming to make human rights, fair labour standards, environmental responsibility, and anti- corruption core parts of the participating companies’ operations. THE AIRLINE has been given “Prime” status with a score of B- by responsible investment rating agency OEKOM. Finnair has also consistently been the highestrated airline in CDP’s (Carbon Disclosure Project) review. In 2016, Finnair’s score was A-. FINNAIR is a member of the Climate Leadership Council, an initiative bringing together leading Finnish businesses to combat climate change and foster business eco-technologies.

84 BLUE WINGS SEPTEMBER 2017

Finnair was one of the first airlines to receive an IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) certification; this environmental management system is a set of processes and practices that help airlines reduce their environmental impacts and increase operating efficiency. Finnair invests in the development of alternative fuels (it operated its first commercial biofuel flight in 2011). It also supports the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) goal of carbon-neutral growth from 2020, and cutting airline emissions in half by 2050.

CARE Wellbeing and inclusivity are promoted at the workplace through training opportunities, an annual survey, and other programmes. Finnair is part of the Commitment to Sustainable Development, an initiative supporting the UN’s Agenda 2030. It invites Finnish organisations to make pledges towards a carbon-neutral society, sustainable work and lifestyle, and more. Finnair’s focus is on promoting equality, nondiscrimination, and diversity at the workplace and with stakeholders.

COLLABORATION Engaging in an open dialogue with industry stakeholders, environmental organisations, and other partners is key to Finnair’s corporate responsibility plan. Finnair Plus members can make point donations via the Finnair Shop to The Finnish Association for Nature Conservation, Crisis Management Initiative (CMI), The Association of Friends of the University Children’s Hospitals, The Cancer Society of Finland, The Finnish Red Cross, UNICEF Finland, Hope, and UN Women.
