NEWSLETTER There are so many bulls!

Never before have we seen so many bulls on the market. Daily, we see new genomic bulls being released and new players competing for an already congested marketplace. How do some farmers differentiate between all the bulls and catalogues they receive or discuss with industry people. The farmer will ask themselves many questions:

1. Do I use genomic/or proven bulls?

2. What ratio is best?

highest 3. What are my non-negotiable traits that a bull must have? 4. Which evaluation system (domestic or overseas) do I relate to best? umber 1 number 1. are now using different methodologies to maintain and potentially increase their market share. Genomics are the future and controlling the Companies

offspring of the elite male and female progeny is of paramount importance to the A.I companies. This can occur in a number of ways, including the distribution of female only semen (Sexed) of their elite genomic bulls or purchasing and/or developing elite females. But they can’t stop, they must importance continually change gears. The shelf life of a genomic bull maybe 12-18 months at best. These bulls are continually turned over. If they aren’t a competitor nce per sizewill of come over the top like a giant wave. But where do those well credentialed proven bulls now sit? They are considerably cheaper than the pre genomic era. hen Do A.Ithey is now represent better buying than previously?

By choosing VikingGenetics you will always be making the most profitable choice; Healthy cows and high production. An everyday solution that works!

Whilst the number of new graduates across the board were down there was still some interesting newcomers added to the marketed list of companies. Reliabilities were generally lower on new release sires but one of the more balanced bulls to graduate was CHALLENGER (GAC). He is a Man O Man son from a Shottle dam from the well-known Judge cow family so finely developed by Australia’s #1 herd in Rengaw Holsteins from Tasmania. CHALLENGER (full brother to the #1 sire in Hummer (GEEMCEE) and the #2 sire in Wrangler) has a BPI of 211, good health traits and is a 107 on type and 108 on udders. One from Semex’s Millionaire dose stable and a longevity expert in Mainstream Mainfold (Oman/BWMarshall) came in at a respectable #4 with a BPI of 291 and 105 on overall type. Whilst down the list a little with a BPI of 200 a bull still worthy of consideration this season is the Super son from AltaGenetics in Coomboona Superstition Regal. Highly reliable with 163 daughters in his production proof Regal has outstanding workability traits and a type linear that is quite balanced. But the highlight of this bull’s proof is his remarkable ABV for cell count at 185! Interestingly Regal is also the highest ranked proven Australian bull in Canada. A bull worth investigating for your autumn bull team.

Viking Genetics provides Sires from Scandinavia who have included a long list of health traits to the usual proofs on type and production for over 30 years. We have only been operating as Viking Genetics Australia for the last six years and have enjoyed substantial continual growth in sales on a yearly basis. WHAT IS VIKING’S MISSION FOR AUSTRALIA? To provide sires to the Australian dairy industry that breed healthy, profitable cows with sound functional type to generate maximum profit for dairy farmers.

$ When milk price is low, it is important to cut costs, but in the right way.

The implications of a portion of the market moving from progeny test usage to a more random and non-committal genomic sampling was reflected in the April 2016 Australian Breeding Values (ABV) Holstein proof release.

DO VIKING SIRES PERFORM UNDER AUSSIE CONDITIONS? Our Holsteins have only been here for six years and our first bull to have a proof is D Sol. He does not have an Australian type proof but farmers believe his type to be much higher than the predicted ABV(i) and report strong cows with great feet and legs. D Sol has 522 Australian daughters in his April proof and has a BPI of 166, scc 131, positive workabilities, survival 107, great calving ease 103 and dtr fertility 106. We are happy with our first Holstein Aussie proof. Our Jerseys are growing in sales each year and we are focusing on taller, stronger framed Jerseys with positive milk and components and great udders for our new 2016 Sires. Our Reds have been in Australia for over 25 years and we dominate the ABV listings with the great red sire, V Foske, holding No. 1 position now for 3 years backed up by a long list of Viking Sires in the top 10. With our red sires being so dominant now after a 25 year history in Australia and our first Holstein to achieve a proof, is in the top 10% of Sires in the ABV System. Yes, Viking Genetics do perform in Australia.

April 2016 Agri-Gene Proof Highlights. The release of the Australian April Dairy proofs saw some new faces appear on the proven BPI lists as well as some high profile Genomic bulls, now with daughter proofs. One of the highest new bulls to appear on the proven BPI list is USA Sire of Sons Co-Op Robust CABRIOLET who is an ideal bull for Australian conditions; medium Stature with good Production, he is excellent for Longevity and Calving Ease with good functional Type. The first shipment of Cabriolet semen is due in next month.

Dryhouse M Galaxy Blast, GP-81

Of the high profile Genomic bulls to now graduate with milking daughters some of the more impressive bulls were CRGALAXY, BOLTDUNHILL, JACEY and also high Fertility PregCheck+ bulls CRUNIQUE and SNOWMYTH. This is all the more pleasing given the fact that in recent months Agri-Gene tour groups have inspected daughters of these bulls in both the USA and Europe with fantastic reports. We are also receiving excellent reports on the first milking Australian daughters from GALAXY who also added over 2500 daughters in the USA and increased for both Type and Udders.

American Proof Results USA Proof Highlights... It would be now close to 10 years since Planet first debuted with his first official proof in America. Back then options were limited and many used him due to his significant production traits but somewhat wary of his type linear. This proof run really exemplified the massive impact he has had. He features in no less than 7 of the top 10 TPI pedigrees. He is one of those rare individuals who can impact both sides of the pedigree. Supersire (WWS/GA) continues to hold the mantle as the #1 TPI sire. The maternal brothers in Saloon (Iota son from Semex) and Sterling (Robust son from WWS) both hold the number #2 and #3 position, respectively. Perhaps the best balanced bull to debut was the Bookem son in Roylane Bookem Bob from WWS who came in at #4. He will sire strong wide chested cows with outstanding udders. Semen will be available in Australia late May. A popular choice in Leading Edge Genetics bull team for 2015 was the Domain son in Sully Hart Meridian (Semex). This highly reliable sire continues to strengthen and with now over 1800 daughters in his proof comes in #14 position and is the # 2 overall type sire in the top 100 listing at 3.15. A number of genomic bulls promoted by Leading Edge Genetics now feature in the Top 25 proven listing including: Supersire, Mogul ,Jacey, AltaOak and AltaEmbassy.

Introducing our judge for the 2016 Leading Edge Genetics ON FARM Challenge.

We are delighted to announce that Brian Carscadden from the Semex Alliance will be judging the Leading Edge Genetics On-Farm Competition for 2016. Upon graduation from University, Carscadden was hired as a sire analyst for United Breeders of Guelph, Ontario. In 1998, the Semex Alliance was formed and Brian was hired on to the newly formed Semex Alliance Sire Analyst Team, where he continues today purchasing bulls across Ontario, Ohio, Kentucky, Wisconsin ,Michigan ,and Indiana as well as in the UK and Ireland. Prior to his A.I. career, Brian enjoyed many successes as a professional dairy cattle fitter around the world. Brian and his wife Linda live in Guelph with their 3 children Craig, Lauren and Colin. Judging will take place from Wednesday 23rd and Friday 25th November 2016. The presentation luncheon at the Warragul Golf Club will occur on Friday 2nd December 2016.

MERIDIAN AD april 16 A4 11/04/16 2:42 PM Page 1

MERIDIAN CONFIRMS HIS SUPERIORITY IN THE APRIL 2016 PROOF RELEASES. In the October 2015 Holstein International a journalist writing his story stated that “those breeders who trusted his genomic figures will be pleased with the outcome of Meridian’s subsequent proof.” Today with over 3,000 daughters in his combined USA and Canada production data and 1,800 Type Classified daughters he is regarded worldwide as one of the Elite sires of the Holstein breed. In addition to his reliable Type and Production data MERIDIAN carries 4 value adding Semex Brandings, first as a high conception rare REPROMAX sire, a CALVING EASE rated sire in both the USA and Canada, he also carries the A2/A2 B-casein protein gene, and for those who still like to show a stylish calf or young cow, he has the ability to leave the real show stoppers as well. His pedigree has enough diversity to it and his breeding pattern the correct values to make him an suitable sire to work with many of the GOLDWYN sons, and his high milk flow will also suit to breed to the many daughters of NUMERO UNO that are starting to appear in our herds. Further confidence in MERIDIAN comes when we look at the number of other sires carrying the SULLY prefix and coming from the same cow family, the matriarch to which is SULLY SHOTTLE MAY. As one article best described him “if you want functional, hard wearing cattle with good udders that milk for fun – MERIDIAN is an easy choice.”

Great expectations come to fruition. A global icon since his initial genomic release, 11HO11202 Pine-Tree AltaOAK added nearly 1,000 production daughters to his proof and claimed Alta’s new #1 TPI spot on the daughter-proven list at 2457 TPI. The following are a couple of Australian Farmer favorites that have delivered upon their great genomic expectations to join the daughter-proven lineup.

Pine Tree AltaOAK (Niagra x Leif)

Apina AltaEMBASSY (Freddie x Planet) EMBASSY has been a high use sire in Australia since he first became available and will have many Australian daughters calving this year. Embassy offers the extreme commercial sire Australian farmers have been waiting for. With huge production yields, a nice Type profile offering strength, great feet and legs and wide sloped rumps. Embassy is a unique sire that offers extreme production and high health, including 6.5 PL and a DPR of 2.5. Combine this with genuine CE and a lower still birth rating, EMBASSY has a place in every breeding program.

Coomboona Superstition REGAL (Super x Shottle) REGAL has also debuted at 200 BPI with daughters milking in three countries. This Australian standing bull has milking daughters in Australia, Canada and the US and has improved on his genomic expectations to be a very well rounded commercial bull. Boasting over 500 ltrs milk, extreme SCS, high fertility, CE, great Workability ratings and Type and Mammary that are 1 standard deviation above the mean or better. Canadian Proof Results Holstein Proofs from Canada - Highlights After much fanfare Semex’s flagship type sire Val-Bisson Doorman graduated in #2 LPI position. This Bookem son comes in at a remarkable +19 on overall confirmation with 297 daughters classified. Holding onto the #1 LPI position is Mapel Wood Brewmaster (WWS). A sire that did have a significant lift in his proof was Sympatico (Semex) who moved from #25 position to #6. This Snowman son from a Planet dam traces back to the Flower cow family from Glen Drummond. Other noteworthy newcomers to the top 10 listing is perhaps one of Dorcy’s best sons in AJDH AltaAgency. This sire converts very well here in Australia. A highlight of the top 10 listed LPI sires this proof run is the diversity of sire lines. There is no less than 8 sires featuring on the top side of these pedigrees.

Australian Proof Results Jersey Proofs from Australia - Highlights The debut Australian proof of All Lynns Louie Valentino (GA/WWS) was outstanding. Positioned at #8 with a BPI of 271 with 184 daughters and overall type of 114 his proof truly reflects what a complete sire he is. Valentino daughters have great frames, tremendous length of mid section with perfect udders. His impact is being felt through his many now proven sons and even grand-sons like Macho from Alta Genetics. His temperament and overall likeability at 107 is hard to believe. Daughter fertility has always been his slight flaw and must be considered when compiling your bull team. CRVMarvarie from the well-known Wallacedale Jerseys came in at #10 on the BPI list. He is one of the stronger Navara sons on the market at 102 for chest width. His udders are the real standout feature of his daughters with tremendous texture, strong ligament and ideal teat placement. The 107 score for temperament and 104 for daughter fertility are some of the stronger points of this working traits. Valentino daughter: Cairnbrae Valentino Estelle 2
