‘Gippsland’s dairy cows amongst the finest in the country’
Some may say that 2021 was a mirror reflection of 2020, with Covid 19 continuing to cause many restrictions and inconvenience. It was therefore with great enthusiasm that once restrictions were lifted, Leading Edge Genetics was able to host its 12th On-Farm Presentation luncheon at the Drouin Golf Club, on Friday 3rd of December. A crowd of over 120 were in attendance when the winners of the five classes were announced by our judge for 2021, Mr Lindsay Marshall from Finley. Taking out the Overall Champion was the three-year-old class winner, in cow 5986 owned by Bill, Faye, Brett and Jodi Loughridge of Poowong North. Sired by Mogul, was this outstanding 2nd lactation cow, whose tremendous udder and width were some of the standout features for our judge Lindsay Marshall. Entry numbers were again excellent, with 427 entries across 58 different breeders.

The depth was extremely deep in this phenomenal 2 year old class in the Leading Edge Genetics On-Farm Competition for 2021. Leading the way was the well balanced Jersey heifer of Lace and Ralston. Sired by Grant she placed over the deep bodied King Doc daughter 6247 owned by the Loughridge family at Poowong North. Placing 3rd was 3689 sired by Delta Lambda and owned by MPH #2 at Labertouche.

The winning 3 Year old for 2021 was the well balanced dairy cow 5986 (sired by Mogul) and owned by Bill, Faye, Brett and Jodi Loughridge at Poowong North. In 2nd place was 6055 also sired by Mogul and again owned by the Loughridge family. The Loughridge family completed the trifecta taking out 3rd place with a Viewpoint daughter 6015.

The 4 to 5 year old class featured some outstanding cows from across Gippsland. Taking out 1st place was entry 927, sired by Guthrie and owned by the Thomson family, Fish Creek. This extremely well balanced and correct animal placed over the outstanding uddered Guthrie daughter 839 and owned by Michael and Jacqui Williams of Catani. In 3rd place was the impressive Macho daughter 2421 of Lace and Ralston of Devon North.

Australian Proof Results Holstein Proofs from Australia - Highlights The desire by many breeders for sires that can add strength to their herd has come to fruition in the recent December 21 proof release. No less than 6 of the top 10 proven sires on BPI are noted as improvers of chest width. Most of the more recently proven sires that are strong in this area trace back to either Bandares or Supershot. Not surprisingly they are universally considered average or better for daughter fertility. Jeronimo-P from ABS maintains his position at #1 on the BPI proven listing. The Bandares son in Sandy-Valley Fedora (GAC) has added daughters to position himself at #3 BPI sire at 446. Fedora daughters have tremendous strength and do maintain their body condition. Stocks are extremely limited on this sire. An interesting sire to watch for in the April 22 proof release will be Kirk Andrews Fon Doo from ST. Marginally short of a publishable proof he is a remarkable 47 kg of protein with a BPI of 546 and on his first few daughters classified is 105 on type and 111 on mammary system. This Australian based bull will create great interest going into next year.

Jersey Proofs from Australia - Highlights
A lack of data continues to be a major stumbling block for the genetics industry in Australia. The published lists include those sires that do meet the minimum reliability levels . But this proof run does really reflect the issues we have. There is no less than 13 Jersey sires that have production proofs that would fit inside the top 5 proven BPI sires in Australia. A number of these sires have over 100 milk recorded daughters including Douggan (461 BPI) ), Dobson (372 BPI), Invincible (354 BPI) and Askn (316 BPI). Douggan (GAC) impressive BPI at 461 will see him easily be the #1 bull in Australia. However he is marginally short in both his type and workability assessments with 9 herds to be crowned with that title. The highly regarded Wilsonview IF Matt (WWS) at 331 BPI is the official #1 sire and continues to receive rave reviews in the field with his milking daughters.
