NEWSLETTER ‘We need more data!’ Proof evaluation week, as we know it, is one of the most exciting times of the year. These occur simultaneously around the world with many different formulas used to achieve each company’s respective #1. The life span, or marketability of a bull is now many years shorter than 2-3 decades ago. Increased use of genomic sires will often result in a bull only used for 12-18 months. How as an industry, can we gather enough production, type and workability data to truly reflect the performance of the ‘said’ bull. Unfortunately, we see many sires who aren’t genomic, but aren’t fully proven either. How they are subsequently marketed can be interesting at times. As an industry our sire lists probably need to better reflect what category they fit.

The Ginfo program has been an outstanding initiative. It has vastly improved the accuracy and volume of dairy sire data. But does the industry need to offer further incentives to improve the quality of data on-farm? Could the farmer be rewarded further if they e highest herd test, evaluate workability performance and allow type assessment of their milking heifers each year? Holstein Proofs from Australia - Highlights ABS has dominated the landscape in the August 2021 BPI release. No less than five of the top ten ranked sires originate from their stable. Holding the mantle as the #1 sire is the high-profile ABS Jeronimo, who for a number of years has been Australia’s #1 genomic sire. While falling slightly from his April data, Jeronimo does excel in daughter fertility and somatic cell count. The #2 sire is the Bandares son Wrigley from ABS. His impressive 110 for overall type and the bonus of being a 105 on chest width will make him a popular choice for discerning breeders. Interestingly, Wrigley is the #1 ranked type sire in the official top 50 listed Holstein sires. The unofficial #3 sire is another Bandares son in Fedora from GAC. Like Wrigley, Fedora excels in components and is also a noted overall udder improver. Unfortunately, both bulls are deceased with limited semen available. August ABVs reap top results for GA.

The August ABV release has seen top results for a large number of bulls from the Genetics Australia line up. GA bulls top the Holstein and Jersey bulls lists and the quality and depth of bulls has never been greater. Several bulls sold by LEG have performed will adding more milking daughters and either lifting or holding their current ABVs. There is no better example than Holstein Sandy-Valley FEDORA [Bandares X Kingboy]. It has been a while since GA has had as many positive reports on a bull as daughters have commenced or progressed in their lactation. Now with 114 Australian milking daughters he lifted his reliability to 93% and is now 522 BPI, 478 HWI, 243 ASI, all in the Top 1% of the breed. A 108 for Mammary, 107 Daughter Fertility, 108 Mastitis Resistance and -5 Gestation Length ABVs round off this Total Performance sire. FEDORA was used by some of Australia’s highest ABV herds and he has been a high demand return to service sire. Top 10 ABV herd, Emu Banks Holsteins, owned by Bryan & Jo Dickson at Terang is milking 23 two-year-old FEDORA heifers. At their last herd test, they produced 1.6kgs of milk solids per day with an average cell count of only 16 and PI of 106. 21 have already been classified this lactation and averaged 81 pts. Bryan said “Our FEDORA heifers could well be the best group of heifers we have milked at Emu Banks Holsteins.”

Jersey Proofs from Australia - Highlights The ever reliable and much talked about Wilsonview IF Matt (WWS) retains his title as the official #1 Jersey sire in Australia at 347 BPI. There is much positive feedback in the field on the early 2nd crop Matt daughters calving in Australia currently. Due to certain reliability requirements, there are often several bulls that don’t feature on the ‘official’ list. One such bull is Douggan from Genetics Australia (GA). He is 431 BPI on 100 milk recorded daughters, making him a benchmark bull. However, a lack of data on his workability and type will result in Douggan waiting until the December evaluations before he makes the proven listing. The Hatman son Invincible from GA is a sire that is also receiving rave reviews in the field. The production component of his proof, with early daughters suggests that he is exceeding his genomic expectations. Currently sitting at 394 BPI (increase of 68 BPI points), we look forward to seeing his December numbers. There appear to be some changes in the daughter fertility of proven Jersey sires in Australia. The top 10 proven sires lifted on average 1.8 points, whilst other highly reliable sires increased as much as 5 points.

Innovation never ends. Our Viking Holstein team has performed well again. VH Ascari holds strong in August and is No. 4 BPI Genomic Sire. VH Heat PP is the No. 2 A2A2 homozygous poll sire, with excellent production, management traits, daughter fertility and very good overall type 102 and mammary 103. With good availability of his semen we have been able to reduce his price to make him available to more breeders. He is an exciting polled option. VH Romello continues as a strong Aussie Proven performer, bringing stature down and adding strength. Chest is 103 and stature is 93, overall type and mammary are both 105. LEADING EDGE GENETICS 2021 ON-FARM COMPETITION The 12th Leading Edge Genetics On-Farm Competition judging will occur from Wednesday 22nd of November to Saturday 25th November 2021. The On-Farm Competition format is not new to Lindsay as he has had the opportunity to judge on this platform throughout every state in Australia on many occasions. Some of Lindsay’s judging highlights include the Jersey Great Southern Challenge and New Zealand’s On-Farm Challenge. Lindsay thoroughly enjoys judging On-Farm Challenge competitions – reveling in the engagement with farmers, their herds and their farms. RED BREEDS GENOMIC BOOST

For the first time, DataGene has released genomic Australian Breeding Values (ABVs) red breed dairy animals and their crosses. Aussie Reds, Ayrshires, Illawarras and Dairy Shorthorns have joined Holsteins and Jerseys with genomic Australian Breeding Values (ABVs), for four key traits: Milk, Fat, Protein and Cell Count. These breeding values will be released three times a year in April, August and December. DataGene stakeholder relations specialist Peter Thurn said genomic ABVs would enable artificial breeding centres to purchase Red bulls with greater confidence, and they could be used at a younger age on farm with more reassurance about the genetic merit of their progeny. CANADA Proof Results Holstein LPI Highlights The combination of constructor sires Duke and MVP in his pedigree, has resulted in a new #1 in Canada in Westcoast Alcove (Semex). This phenomenal production sire with great daughter numbers is 273 LPI, ahead of his nearest rival in Alligator, also from Semex. The impact of Duke cannot be underestimated in the Holstein breed. His ability to pass on width is nearly unsurpassed. Alcove himself is +10 on chest width and +9 on body depth, with the added bonus of being desirable on calving ease. Equal #1 type sires in Canada are the French bull Enzo, together with the well-known Sidekick from Semex - both are at +17 on confirmation. Crushabull (Semex) debuts at +14, but only with type data, whilst other well known sires in Victor and Dealmaker performed strongly at +13.
