The artificial breeding industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace. The recent acquisition of Total Livestock Genetics by Genetics Australia is a progressive move for the Australian genetics industry. This will enable the Australian dairy farmer to have a greater range of sires from most dairy breeds in sexed form. The continued growth and accessibility of fresh and frozen sexed semen (SS) has never been greater. As SS usage continues to grow in the dairy industry, so too has the demand for beef semen. Farmers want their heifer calves born in tighter groups for ease of management, future joining and potentially sale of valuable surplus heifer calves. This naturally poses the question, what is the outlook for conventional semen? Is it possible that in a few years’ time that SS will equate for 50% of all semen sold in Australia? This may lead to fewer bulls being marketed (long overdue). But it also could include sires that aren’t able to access sexed sorting machines.

Holstein Proofs from Australia - Highlights The April Holstein proof summaries saw accolades evenly shared. The new #1 sire is Wa-Del Yoder Bandares from World Wide Sires. Extensively used as an embryo Transfer (ET) flush sire, Bandares daughters maintain body condition, have tremendous udders with great milk components. His teat length is the one region where he needs to be protected. Endco Superhero (GAC) debut proof at #6 at 400 BPI was a great result for this high profile Supershot son. Well priced for the marketplace Superhero is a great source of strength. His rating of 106 for chest width on 56 daughters classified is his strong suit. Farmer Likeability of 108 ranks him equal #1 in Australia, with the household names Rubicon, Unix and Delta Lambda. ABS Jeronimo (ABS) is a sire that has featured near the top of the genomic listings for several years. This single ‘P’ carrying Superhero son ticks many boxes: great components, high BPI, polled carrier and predominately black offspring. The first daughters have begun calving in Australia. His current BPI is now 596, easily the #1 sire. His August proof data will give a more accurate read on Jeronimo, with significant daughters to be added to his type and workability profiles at this time.

Top Genomic Sire & now the #1 BPI and HWI Sire
JERONIMO-P burst onto the Australian breeding scene three years ago as the first sire to hit the market with a BPI of more than 400 and has remained at the top of the genetic list since then. He has also flooded the pointy-end of the heifer rankings, having sired 37 of the top 100 females in the April release. Five of the top 10 proven Holstein sires revealed in the latest ABV release were from the ABS stable. Farmer favourite and short gestation sire De-Su 13530 SEVILLE was at number five with a BPI$ of 411 while dairy strength breed-leader Rosylane-LLC SPOCK was ranked seventh with a BPI$ of 392. The demand for positive daughter fertility Jersey sires is strengthening. A sire that has a good level of reliability with 162 daughters/33 herds is Broadlin Hilux (Algernon) from GAC. This Navarian son is 100 on daughter fertility, coupled with 111 on mammary system. Two young Jerseys sires that were released this April are destined to create a lot of market interest. Pilot (Jetfighter/Tbone) from ST Australia comes from the large Dornoch herd in the Western Districts. Pilot is equal #1 mammary system bull at 114. He also excels in many other parts of his profile including positive daughter fertility, sloped rumps and chest width. Due to be released in the coming weeks Pilot is an excellent choice, with the added bonus of his increased teat length. Bushfield -P is a descendent of the renowned Brookbora herd in Northern Victoria. This CSC/ABS partnership sire is a rare son of the Polled Gold son from GAC. The impact that one of the highest profile genomic (now proven) sires is having is truly remarkable. We are of course, referring to Cogent Supershot from the Cogent now ST stable. This high-profile sire, who once sold for over $1000/dose in Australia, is passing on his elite genetics all around the world. The new #1 sire and the first daughter proven sire to break the 3000 GTPI barrier is Charl (ST) at +3050. Charl is a grandson of Supershot from a Yoder dam. Woodcrest King Doc (WWS) and Farnear Delta Lamba (ST) are considered by many industry pundits as two of the best proven Holstein Sires in the breed. However accessibility of their semen (both forms) is a real challenge. Both Doc and Lambda’s %GP or better score on daughters classified in Canada is very high with 87% for Doc and 88% for Lambda. History will be a great gauge as to whether they feature both maternally and/or paternally in future sire stacks.
