‘Spring is fast approaching’
For many dairy farmers spring means joining season is just around the corner. Over the last few years many farmers have increased the percentage of genomic sires that make up their bull team. The genetic progression advantages are becoming increasingly obvious. If we cast our minds back to the Leading Edge Genetics (LEG) Holstein Spring Genomic pack of 2015, it highest included six elite genomic sires. Those bulls are now well proven and many are household names. In the last three years genetic umber 1 roll-back’s have occurred. How do those six sires, on average, now rank compared to their genomic proofs at the time? The number 1. difference in their TPI scores (based on those 6 sires) is only 5%, whilst their type is only a meagre 2.5%. What does this tell you? Firstly. it is important that you use as a high a ranked genomic sire commercially available. Secondly, ‘don’t put all your importance eggs in one basket.’ Reduce the risk by using a group of genomic sires is imperative. nce per

High BPI cows contribute more to dairy businesses. With DataGene’s August release of Australian Breeding Values (ABVs), dairy farmers have one more good reason – worth about $300 per cow – to focus on Balanced Performance Index (BPI) when selecting bulls. The BPI is a blend of ABVs for the traits that influence a dairy cow’s contribution to the farm business: production, fertility, functional type, survival, cell count, workability and feed saved. In a major study, the ImProving Herds project used actual data from commercial dairy herds to determine contribution of genetics to dairy farm businesses. On average, the top 25% of cows in a herd (based on BPI) produce a margin over feed and herd costs of $300 per cow more than the bottom 25%. Michelle Axford from DataGene said the findings held across different dairying regions and feeding systems. “The message is clear: the daughters of high BPI bulls perform better under Australian conditions,” she said. “A simple and effective way to put this into practice is to breed replacements from bulls that carry the Good Bulls logo and meet your breeding priorities. “You can be confident that using Good Bulls will improve the Balanced Performance Index of your herd,” she said. Bulls that carry the Good Bulls logo meet DataGene’s minimum criteria for BPI and reliability and are available for purchase. “There is a wide range of Good Bulls, giving farmers plenty of choice for Good Bulls that meet their priorities for specific traits, budget and company preferences,” she said.

Fertility Day A large crowd of over 70 farmers and local veterinarians attended a ‘Fertility and Reproduction Management’ day at the Warragul Golf Club on Friday 3rd of August. Held in conjunction with Alta Genetics, the guest speaker was Glaucio Lopes, head of cattle reproduction at the Alta University, USA. Many interesting subjects were covered including synchronisation programs, heat detection software, detailed explanation of DPR (Daughter Pregnancy Rate) plus much more. A big thanks to Alta Genetics for making someone of Glaucio calibre available to our clients.

Mike Halliwell from World Wide Sires (WWS) UK is Leading Edge Genetics On-Farm judge for 2018. Mike has been involved in the dairy industry since the early 90’s and has a wealth of experience, having judged many On-Farm competitions and shows throughout the UK and Europe. More recently Mike has moved into a business development role within World Wide Sires in the UK. Judging for the On-Farm will occur between Wednesday 21st November and Saturday 24th November with the presentation luncheon on Friday 30th of November at theWarragul Golf Club.

USA Proof Highlights... The debut of the heavily used sire of sons from WWS in S-S-I Montross Jedi (#7) and Bacon-Hill Pety Modesty (#15) was perhaps of most interest.
