A reflection on 2016...

In what was the toughest year for many Dairy Farmers there were still several noteworthy events occur during the course of the year. From an industry point of view we are seeing more companies now genomically test their young bulls in the Australian ABV system. This has helped identify some sires who previously wouldn’t have been discovered. highest Consequently we are seeing some significant re-rankings occur and also a few new faces being added to the ABV (G) listings. This will give farmers possibly great diversity of umber 1 going forward. 2016 saw a number of locally bred Holstein bulls be acquired by overseas companies. This is a tremendous boost for the profile of Australian dairy cattle. bloodlines In a first, number 1. ADHIS had a December proof run. This will bring Australia in line with the rest of the world. The run included an updated test day model for both the Holstein and Jersey breed which will add great reliability to the production component of each individual sire.

In September we ran an advanced A.I refresher course day with Mr.Bob Fox from World Wide Sires. This day was fully allocated with attendee’s finding it very beneficial. We already importance have some events in place for 2017 including, our late February tour of two of Australia’s largest dairy producers in Moxey Farms and Leppington Pastoral Company in NSW. (more nce per details later in the newsletter). size of hen Leading A.I is Edge Genetics had a number of highlights for 2016 including our On-Farm Competition. This year we were fortunate to have Mr.Brian Carscadden from the Semex Alliance in Canada as our judge. Now in its 7th year, the event is one of the largest of its kind in Australia. There was some new stars revealed with the entry of Evan and Sheriden Williams oming even landing the Overall Champion. Sired by Hydaways Goldmine, cow 837 was the 4 year old and over class winner. Thanks for your continued support in 2016. Here’s hoping that 2017 brings more buoyancy to our essential dairy industry.

LEADING EDGE GENETICS ON-FARM COMPETITION 2016 The 2016 Leading Edge Genetics On-Farm Competition this year saw the Holstein and Jerseys share the accolades. This year 360 head were entered from across 54 different farmers. Taking out the highest honour of Overall Champion and winning the 4 Year Old and over class was entry 837 sired by Hydaways Goldmine from Evan and Sheriden Williams, Yannathan. This well balanced angular dairy cow was a standout for judge Mr Brian Carscadden fromCanada. Long time supporters of the competition, they also received a 2nd in the 3 Year Old class with 914 (Planet) and 5th with 903 (Lavanguard). For the judge Brian Carscadden, it was a very busy 3 and half days across Gippsland. He visited 54 farms and judged 360 from all breeds. “It was a competition of great depth. Each farm had animals of tremendous quality. There could only be one winner in each class unfortuntely. But for me I was looking for the most correct well balanced cow, “said Brian. Further information on all winners and placegetters feature later in the newsletter.

Holstein Proofs from Australia - Highlights In a first for the industry all bulls received either an ABV or an ABV(I) in December. A new test model has also been implemented for the Holstein and the Jerseys in this proof run. This had led to some re-rankings but also some greater reliability to the production aspect of the proofs. The health specialist in Amighetti Numero Uno (Semex) continued his climb in the rankings and now sits at #2 BPI sire. A highly popular bull for Leading Edge Genetics in 2016 was Coomboona Superstition Regal (Alta). He added another 40 daughters and is now ranked #7 BPI sire and #1 TWI sire. Proven in 3 countries around the world Regal is certainly one of the better high reliability bulls on the market.

In the Holstein breed, genomic superstar ROYALMAN has graduated with a BPI 0f 288 and 175 daughters in his initial production proof. His positive components and moderate milk flow give him the ideal production profile for Australian farmers. A son of Goldwyn, ROYALMAN has around 30 daughters scored for type and will have plenty more scored over the coming months. Highlights of his type proof include 108 for Mammary, 107 for Pin Set and 111 for Rear Attachment Height. With a Daughter Fertility rating of 110 and calving Ease of 102, ROYALMAN is the most complete newcomer on the market. Another exciting newcomer is ATLEY, again a popular genomic sire that lived up to expectation. ATLEY’s genomic breeding values have always indicated plenty of milk and at 1068 litres he is delivering. As we know he has always been a strong type sire and with over 100 daughter classified, he is now confirming this. Outstanding udders, in particular rear udders combined with rumps that are near perfect, which is unusual in a son of Atwood, this makes ATLEY one of the best sons of this world renowned sire. The highest bull in the Jersey breed is Beulah TAHBILK. Vanahlem son from a Navara dam and was bred by Daryl and Lani Hoey of Katunga. TAHBILK debuts at 347 BPI with 72 daughter milking. His daughters display plenty of strength and he is a real component improver. With a small number of daughters classified, TAHBILK is ticking all the boxes including A22 Status. Udders are a real feature and with super workability traits, it’s no wonder his popularity is on the rise!

USA Proof Highlights... The talk has always been “just wait for the Mogul sons.” When they come they will come with a rush. Mogul is considered perhaps the best uddered bull in the breed. It was his son Bacon-Hill Montross who debuted at #1 from WWS. The modern day sire for many, Montross daughters are mid-size, have phenomenal production with outstanding overall type. His legacy is already being felt through his many genomic sons including Scenario, Bourbon, Montana and Missle to name a few. All of which have featured in past Leading Edge Genetics Genomic Packs. The high profile genomic sire in Morningview MCC Kingboy is now proven, debuting at #10 in the TPI listing. His ability of putting substance and scale into cows has found him a popular choice around the world. At 3.16 on overall type he is the highest type sire in the Top 10 TPI listing. April 2017 proof release looms as an exciting one with the next generation of genomic bulls due to get a fully publishable proof including AltaRabo, AltaMandato and Supershot and Main Event to name a few.

Dairy farmers will be able to base their breeding choices on more up-to-date Australian Breeding Values (ABVs) with this week’s public ABV release by the Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme. And the reliability of production trait ABVs for Holstein and Jersey breeds has increased with recent refinements to the model.

To check out this season’s top bulls, download the latest update of the Good Bulls app now!

Until now, public ABV releases have occurred twice a year in April and August. Michelle Axford from ADHIS said it now made sense to provide a third update in December due to the additional data available from genotyped animals and performance data from overseas and Australia.

Owners of Holstein and Jersey breeds can also expect improved reliability of the ABVs of both bulls and cows. “The refinements to the model for calculating ABVs were implemented for Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Illawarra and Aussie Red breeds in April 2015. We know from this experience that the ABVs for young – first crop – bulls will be more stable over time, with the refined model in place.” she said. For more information and the latest ABV lists, go the Breeding Value section of the website or contact the ADHIS team on 03 8621 4240.

Jedi has become a household name since becoming an active Genomic sire in August 2015. WWS’ strength lies in its investment in high ranking genomic bulls that become the foundation for a powerful proven line up. For example, the No.1 TPI sire in the world, 7HO12165 MONTROSS, is now two generations of genomic success. He was one the most heavily-used genomic sires in history, and his early daughters have exceeded all expectations. MONTROSS’ legacy will continue with his elite GTPI sons: JEDI +2891, FERDINAND +2757, HANG-TIME +2746, MISSLIE +2744, and SCENARIO +2732. JEDI has been a household name since becoming an active Genomic sire in August 2015. He climbed 162 GTPI points and is the only bull to rank among the top four GTPI sires for five consecutive sire summaries. JEDI has impressed the industry with his genetic excellence and ability to produce an array of breed leading sons and daughters. With several sons topping Holstein Association USA’s Top 200 Genomic Young Sire list, the JEDI impact has only begun. Select Sires (part owner of WWS) a farmer own co-operative in the USA with over 50,000 farmer members, have an extensive breeding program and bulls with the prefix S-S-I are products of this aggressive breeding program. JEDI’s dam S-S-I Supersire Miri has been an integral part of this program. Bulls from this breeding program and others bred by co-operator herds across the globe have create bulls that are taking the females of the breed to new levels, 96 of the top 100 females in the breed are bred by WWS bulls. His influence in Australia is evident in the No.6 GTPI heifer in the world, Lightning Ridge CMD Jedi Gigi +2937 GTPI, who sells as lot 1 in the 2017 WWS Evolution Sale at IDW. BALISTO, a direct descendant from the 2014 Holstein International Global Cow of the year. This is the same cow family to produce industry icons Supersire, Mogul, Sid, Power-ball and MONTEREY. BALISTO is best described as “the package”. His production +255 ASI offers exceptional components (fat & protein %) He breaks through the 300 BPI $ barrier at 329, the highest Type Weighted Index (341) bull in Australia. Good health traits making him a 4 star Transition Right sire. The economic impact of sire genetics on cow transition health is significant for any size dairy operation. By using BALISTO, your operation is projected to save approximately $50 per lactation in preventive or reactive costs/cow over breed average sired progeny.
