The cancellation of the majority of agricultural events in Australia has led to many farmers being somewhat farm bound. But in these tough times everyone has been extremely resilient. None more so than farmers, who are used to ‘moving with the punches’ and adapting and e highest adjusting where necessary. Australian Proof Results Holstein Proofs from Australia - Highlights The new #1 BPI sire in Australia at 354 is Mr Super Contender (Supershot/Uno) from ST Australia. A past member of a Leading Edge Genetics genomic pack, Contender is a sire that will tick a lot of boxes for farmers. His sires animals that carry some cover and have some chest width with the added bonus of adding teat length. He now has 242 milk recorded daughters (45 herds) and 77 daughters that have been appraised for his linear profile. Perhaps his score of 107 on overall farmer likeability, suggests the owners really do like their Contender daughters. A bull that continues to improve and has a real outcross pedigree is De-Su 1218 Tailor. This ABS sire also added extra daughters and now has 168 in his production proof and 66 in his linear profile. Tailor daughters have outstanding udders with a 112 composite score for mammary. Great cell count and daughter fertility ratings are added bonuses to this well proven La-Bron son. A bull to watch come the December proof run is Westcoast Perseus from the Semex stable. His 451 BPI based on a limited amount of Australian daughters has him as the #1 unofficial Australian sire. A breed leading calving ease sire at 106 (702 observations) Perseus has the added attraction being a true outcross option.

Australian Holstein Sires Shine in August ABVs “Farmers will notice the outstanding performance of Australian bred sires in the recent August ABV release”, stated Genetics Australia’s CEO, Anthony Shelly. “We are really pleased with the way our Australian bred young sires and emerging proven sires are complimenting our strong daughter proven sires, to give us a complete offering that is hard to match”. Proven favourites MAEBULL and GILES continue to lead the Holstein contingent. MAEBULL with now more than 550 milking daughters still maintains a 300+ BPI ranking, offering breed leading Mastitis resistance and cell count, superior daughter fertility and positive semen conception rate. 2020 addition GILES continues to perform strongly with 332 BPI, additional daughters and reliability, with the same breed leading gestation length and calving ease. This JoSuper son sires averaged statured daughters that display excellent width and strength. “We are very excited to see previously high-ranking genomic sire delivering on his promise” states Shelly. MASNAH, an A22 MVP son who started adding daughters late last year, is emerging as a real prospect with 366 BPI backed by amazing production including a protein rating of +36kgs with +0.68%. Solid type and workabilities have made him a first choice in many breeding programs.

Jersey Proofs from Australia - Highlights

Wilsonview IF Matt (WWS) continues to hold the mantle as the #1 BPI Jersey sire in Australia at 226. A popular choice for Jersey breeders Matt has many admirers due to his great semen quality. His high level of reliability in both his production and type proofs means Australian farmers can use him with great confidence. A new addition to the top 10 listing is Apollo (WWS). Of smaller stature the Apollo daughters are extremely sound in their udders, including a positive teat length score. The added bonus for Apollo is his 103 on daughter fertility. The Genetic Australia sire in Tahbilk added 150 daughters in the August proof summaries. Sired by one of the greats of the Jersey breed in Van Ahlem, Tahbilk will leave powerhouse cows based on his strong muzzle, chest and pin width values. If your cows getting a little frail then look at Tahbilk to put some grunt back into them.

There are several sires to keep an eye on coming through the ABV system, one being VIKHSPARKY. Sparky is the highest ranked daughter fertility sire (117) with milking daughters that is A2A2 (and Kappa casein BB to boot!). He has more than 4000 international daughters in his proof. Sparky’s udders and teat length are a feature, but what you can’t see on his Australian proof is his amazing daughter resistance to the biggest foot issues in Australia, white line separation and sole haemorrhage. Be sure to check this out through Viking Genetics information. VikJQuintana is emerging through the BPI system as his daughters are coming into production in Australia. Reports of high classifying daughters with nice stature and chest, udder depth and teat length are becoming common place. It is early days with 27 daughters in 10 herds here in Australia on top of his 1065 dtrs in Denmark, but just these few have almost doubled his BPI score from the April run.

LEADING EDGE GENETICS 2020 ON-FARM COMPETITION The 11th Leading Edge Genetics On-Farm Competition judging will occur from Wednesday 18th of November to Saturday 21st November 2020. The presentation of the results will occur on Friday 27th of November. More details to follow closer to the date. Our judge for the 11th Leading Edge Genetics is Mr. Peter Dickson (pictured) from Semex Australia. Peter is well known in the industry being the Area Manager for Western Victoria and Tasmania for Semex. Peter has judged all over Australia in 6 states. Starting his judging career at the young age of 16, judging at every Royal Show in Australia (excluding Melbourne). Peter has also judged throughout Australia at many regional and feature shows. The most noteworthy judging assignment was the opportunity to judge overseas in Canada at the Canadian National Guernsey Show in 2007 held at Ancaster in Ontario. The On-Farm Competition format is not new to Peter as he has had the opportunity to judge on this platform throughout Victoria and Tasmania on many occasions. He has also been a judging panel member for both the Guernsey and Holstein Australia photo competitions. Peter is currently Semex’s Area Manager for Western Victoria and Tasmania and has been in with role for the past 20 years.

Proof Highlights from Agri Gene Undoubtably one of the highlights from the August Holstein proofs was the performance of DELTA-LAMBDA. Now with daughters milking all over the world, including Australia, Delta-Lambda is the No1 Udder Composite sire from the Top 100 TPI sires in the USA and was the only new sire to enter the Top 10 LPI sires in Canada where he currently sits at No.2. His early milking daughters in Australia are following the trends of their international siblings and he is also over +300 for BPI in Australia. Another daughter proven ‘Breeders Favorite’ sire that continues to impress as more daughters come into milk is STANTONS CHIEF. Chief daughters display tremendous silky udders and have plenty of strength, width of frame and great rumps. A new release sire from the April proofs was PEAK FORTNITE who has been heavily used as a sire of sons in the successful Peak program. He continues to lead the way as one the leading TPI, Net Merit and BPI sires in the breed. Fortnite ticks most of the boxes no matter what your index preference; A2A2, moderate stature with strength and great udders backed by the Delicious cow family that has put the ST program on the map. French sire NACASH is another sire who impresses across multiple international indexes including TPI and BPI where he is amongst the top bulls. Nacash has received high use in Australia with his first calves on the ground in 2020 showing significant improvement on the genomic testing. He offers calving ease, A2A2 and a near faultless linear with +2800 TPI and over +350 BPI.

Another couple of big improvers from the August BPI ranking was former No.1 sire CHAIRMAN. Chairman now has his first daughters in milk in Australia and the USA and German Polled sire ADLON P who jumped up over 30 BPI points from April, has one the best balanced proofs in the breed with a great mix of type, production, health and fitness traits. CALISTO is a new ‘KING DOC’ son who offers a unique proof that combines high production with breed leading type and is also a leader for fertility with a DPR of +2.8.

DataVat delves into dairy genetics DataGene’s August release of Australian Breeding Values (ABVs) shines the spotlight on DataVat, a website that puts a wealth of genetic information at dairy farmers’ fingertips. DataVat’s Animal Search function allows the user to look up genetic details of individual bulls or cows, including ABVs, indices, genetic codes, pedigree, progeny and indices graphs. Powerful filters allow the user to create and sort short lists of animals that meet their breeding priorities. Updated with each ABV release, DataVat draws upon a database of more than 830,250 bulls from around the world. Anyone can look up the genetic details for bulls and the top genotyped dairy females. Herd owners can create a login account with DataVat to see the genetic details of their own cows, and herd reports such as the Genetic Progress Report. DataGene CEO, Dr Matt Shaffer, said further enhancements were in development which would add more functionality to DataVat over time. DataVat is a user-friendly window to the dairy industry’s Central Data Repository (CDR) which connects data from a variety of sources, such as the genetic evaluation system, breed societies, herd test centres and some on-farm software “We are now at the stage of expanding data connections to create richer tools and resources,” Dr Shaffer said. DataGene is also a partner in the International Dairy Data Exchange (iDDEN) which is working to streamline data exchange between dairy herds, milk recording organizations and dairy equipment manufacturers and other dairy organisations. Dairy Australia has funded DataGene’s participation in the iDDEN which brings together milk recording organizations and databases across 13 countries. Dr Shaffer said the international collaboration will provide industry databases with access to a range of data currently not captured. “It is founded on strong principles of data governance and consent for data sharing. These issues will be of growing importance as the volume of data available on-farm increases and systems move to cloud-based solutions,” he said.

The August 2020 TPI proof evaluations proved to be somewhat non-eventful. Due to restrictions caused by Covid-19 the classification and milk recording of potential new graduate progeny was restricted. As a result only a small number of sires graduated with progeny proofs. AOT Silver Helix from WWS still holds the #1 position with a TPI of 2942. Woodcrest King Doc (WWS) and Farnear Delta Lambda (A/GENE) are considered two of the most balanced proven sires on the world stage.
